As you’ve probably guessed from the name, CDBurnerXP is a CD-burning app for Windows. But what it’s obvious from the name is that it’s a very good and deceptively powerful app too.

It’s compatible with all versions of Windows from XP onwards, it can burn CDs, DVDs, and even Blu-rays if you have the hardware to do so. It also has a host of features including gapless audio playback, creation of bootable system discs, spanning data over multiple discs and full disc copying, although (as you’d expect) it won’t attempt to bypass copy protection systems on commercial software.

It’s compatible with a huge range of IDE, USB, FireWire and SCSI drives and has automatic buffer underrun protection to prevent CDs becoming coasters.

Why you need it

Windows’ lack of decent disc burning has been a pain for years, and CDBurnerXP addresses the problem beautifully.

You can use it as a backup app or to make music CDs, to burn your home movies to DVD or create MP3 CDs for compatible players, create music CDs from M3U or WPL playlists, and fully erase rewritable data discs. Not bad for something that’s completely free of charge for both personal and commercial use.
