Thankfully, there’s no need to pay for this essential software – there are excellent tools available to download and use completely free

Here we’re looking at word processors that can be used offline (particularly useful for distraction-free writing), but there are also several browser-based tools to consider. Google Docs is the most obvious choice, and has the advantage of saving your work automatically so you don’t have to worry about losing large amounts if your connection fails. It’s also a good choice for collaborative working, and means you don’t have to upload work to a separate cloud storage service to access it from different devices. However, it has a limited selection of templates, there’s no way to import content from other Google applications, and any online tool is going to be surrounded by tempting distractions like social media.

With that in mind, here’s our pick of the best word processors for Windows.

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/XpjytZKadYHuY5Kqsnopd7.jpg

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/WyheCFY6FEf6avu3uv6Jgi.jpg

1. WPS Office Writer

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/Z3NPEW36KgeQUzUqXReN6.png

We can’t believe it’s not Word – WPS Office Writer is the ultimate free word processor

If you’ve used a modern version of Microsoft Word, there’ll be no learning curve at all when you switch to WPS Office Writer. This free word processor looks and behaves almost exactly like its premium counterpart, and even has its own equivalent of OneDrive, offering 1GB free cloud storage.

Its selection of pre-installed templates gives you everything you need for common document types, and you can easily create your own for bespoke tasks. It’s compatible with every text file format you can think of, including current and legacy versions of Microsoft Word dating back to Office 97.

WPS Office Writer is supported by discrete ads, which can be removed by upgrading to the premium version, but they’re barely noticeable and no features are locked behind a paywall. Overall, WPS Writer is very impressive, and in our opinion it’s the best free word processor available to download today.

WPS has just launched a free PDF to Word converter as well, which is a great companion for its word processor.

Download here: WPS Office Free

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/XpjytZKadYHuY5Kqsnopd7.jpg

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/dBtDAsVz6Ce3DtBBY6z2iJ.jpg

2. LibreOffice Writer or Apache OpenOffice Writer

All-singing, all-dancing word processors for any kind of text-based work

LibreOffice is a fork of Apache OpenOffice, and although there are some differences between the two suites (LibreOffice receives more frequent updates, for example, and has a more lively userbase), their word processing components are so similar, we’re listing them together.

Both versions of Writer are feature-packed analogs of Microsoft Word, packed with all the features you could possibly need for any kind of text-based work.

The two versions of Writer include wizards and templates for common document types, such as invoices and letters, and it’s easy to create your own templates for future use as well. The word processors also work together with the other office software in their respective suites – so you can use Base to create a bibliography, for example.

Both word processors support all the most popular file formats, and can export documents to PDF without the need for additional software. If you’re looking for a word processor that can stand in for Microsoft Word, either of these two will be a perfect candidate.

Download here: LibreOffice

Download here: Apache OpenOffice

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/XpjytZKadYHuY5Kqsnopd7.jpg

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/QEkR6xYMV7AcAZR5ixQRAX.jpg

3. FocusWriter

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/Z3NPEW36KgeQUzUqXReN6.png

The ideal word processor for first drafts, with no distractions or fussy formatting

If you simply want to hammer out some words without worrying about formatting, you could just use Windows’ built-in Notepad app, but FocusWriter is full of clever tools that will help you maximise productivity without ever getting in the way.

As the name implies, FocusWriter’s goal is to block out all distractions so you can give that all-important first draft your full attention. In normal use, all you see is a blank page – toolbars are only visible if you move your mouse pointer to the edge of the screen – but there’s a killer feature in Focused Text, which fades everything into the background except the paragraph or sentence youn’re currently writing.

FocusWriter also features alerts that are triggered at certain times, or when you’ve reached a predefined word count, so you don’t need to worry about watching a counter (as you would in Microsoft Word). This also makes FocusWriter a good tool to use in tandem with the Pomodoro Technique, which involves working hard for a period of time that’s long enough for you to work productively, but not so long that you become fatigued, then taking a timed break.

It’s not suitable for editing, but for productivity, FocusWriter is hard to beat.

Download here: FocusWriter

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/XpjytZKadYHuY5Kqsnopd7.jpg

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/7EGpx8CwTBfXBgCNpj3kR9.jpg

4. FreeOffice TextMaker

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/Z3NPEW36KgeQUzUqXReN6.png

Another great looking and feature-filled word processor, but it can't save in DOCX format

TextMaker – the word processing element of SoftMaker FreeOffice – is good looking, and comes with several handy templates for creating letters and other everyday documents. The selection isn’t as extensive as some of its rivals’, but you can also make new designs for future use and save them in TMV format.

All the features you’d expect from a modern word processor are present and correct, including advanced formatting, databases for bibliographies and footnotes, and the ability to track changes in collaborative projects.

The only real drawback of FreeOffice TextMaker is its inability to save your work in DOCX format (though you can open and edit these files with no difficulty). This feature is limited to the premium version of SoftMaker Office, which retails for £48.20 (about US$60, AU$75).

Download here: SoftMaker FreeOffice

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/XpjytZKadYHuY5Kqsnopd7.jpg

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/c6BCvNcLyivijUB3sBUsnW.jpg

5. WriteMonkey

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/Z3NPEW36KgeQUzUqXReN6.png

Productivity-focused word processing with quick keyboard shortcuts for all the essentials

WriteMonkey is another no-frills word processor designed to help you maximize your output without fussing with editing and formatting. It’s not intended for documents like letters or CVs, but is great for committing early ideas to paper (or screen) so you have the raw material to develop later.

Unlike FocusWriter, which is compatible with all the most common text formats (including Microsoft’s DOC and DOCX), WriteMonkey only works with TXT files, so you’ll have to convert any works in progress before opening them. WriteMonkey’s hidden controls are tricker to navigate, too – everything is accessed via a large right-click menu, or a vast collection of keyboard shortcuts.

That said, if you’re happy to commit those shortcuts to memory, you’ll find WriteMonkey faster to use than toolbar-based alternatives.

We also like the ability to look words up in Wikipedia, Google Images, Poetry.com, Answers.com, and many others without opening a browser winder manually and leaving yourself open to the temptations of Twitter and Facebook.

WriteMonkey is a portable app, so there’s no need to install it – just extract all the downloaded files to a removable drive or cloud storage service, and you can use it on any PC by opening the file WriteMonkey.exe.

Download here: WriteMonkey
http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/efH4RY4w8C8

iOS 8 could split the iPad's screen between apps, like Microsoft Surface

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/tablets/iPad/iPadAir/Press/iPadAir-Press-09-470-75.jpg
There's no logical reason why the iPad shouldn't be able to do split-screen multitasking as well as any other tablet, and with iOS 8 the feature might actually arrive.

That's what 9to5Mac is saying after speaking with "sources with knowledge of the enhancement in development."

With Apple's next major iOS update, these sources said, the iPad will gain the ability to use two applications simultaneously, each taking up one half of the tablet's ample screen.

The iPad may be the leader in the tablet space, but this is one thing it could definitely learn from Microsoft's Surface.

The student becomes the teacher

Microsoft has always positioned the Surface as more of a productivity- or work-oriented tablet than Apple has done with the iPad.

Microsoft even highlighted Surface's multi-tasking superiority in the below ad.
YouTube : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2vyH9VZHKc
But the

The bulletins covered Windows, Office, Internet Explorer, Visual Studio and Sharepoint among other pieces of Microsoft software. Five of the bulletins held a critical rating, stressing the need to apply the patches as soon as possible.

MS13-096, one of the patches, fixes a vulnerability (already being exploited by attackers) in the GDI+ library for parsing TIFF image files. It affects older Microsoft software including Vista and Office 2003, 2007 and 2010. It has already been recorded as being used in attacks in the Middle East and Asia.

Among other problems addressed by the patch this month include malicious webpage attacks, script functionality and fake Authenticode algorithms.

Easy targets

Newer software, naturally, tends to have less vulnerability to these attacks than older software. Windows 8 has more security features than 7, and 7 more than Vista. "Even if you fully patched Windows XP you are running far more of a risk than with Windows 7" Qualys chief technology officer, Wolfgang Kandek, says.

Kandek notes as an example that there is a zero-day vulnerability in XP (not addressed in this month's patch) which exploits have already been crafted for. Why might you want to do either of these things? Depending on what you're up to online, it is entirely possible that you do not want your online activities to be traceable – particularly in parts of the world where internet surveillance is a serious issue.

As for wanting to disguise where you are, this has the advantage of opening up websites that might otherwise be inaccessible. There are a large number of websites – using video or television sites – that use geo-locking to try to block visitors from certain countries, and free VPN software can be used to get around these restrictions. It can also be used to bypass site block put in place by governments and ISPs, and secure your wireless connection.

Here's our pick of the best free VPN software to keep your online activity safe and anonymous.

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/XpjytZKadYHuY5Kqsnopd7.jpg

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/TKMvFA4rZe7LNQERY6q8NA.jpg

1. TunnelBear is the best free VPN around

TunnelBear might have something of a cutesy design, but it's a serious free VPN. There are free and paid-for subscriptions to choose from. The only restriction with the free one is that you are limited to 500MB of traffic each month. This isn't a huge amount, so you won’t be able to use TunnelBear all of the time without paying, but it's great for those times when you feel like you need a little extra protection.

Performance is impressive and ease of use is second to none. In all likelihood you won’t need to change any of the default settings, and the automatic connection option should work find, but you can manually choose from one of 20 countries as your adopted location. Delightfully simple and high recommended. There's a mobile version available for your smartphone too.

Download here: TunnelBear

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/XpjytZKadYHuY5Kqsnopd7.jpg

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/PkAFUN34ERWuQyJbtR9Yxb.jpg
Hotspot Shield Free is extremely easy to use, and offers a generous data allowance
2. The program initially installs as a regular desktop app that captures all web traffic when it is enabled, but there are also browser extensions available for Firefox and Chrome to take care of browser-only traffic.

In addition to the Windows software, there are versions for macOS, iOS and Android, so you can keep yourself safe online using just about any device you care to mention.

You can choose to anchor yourself to one of 20 countries if you pay for the Elite version of the app, and this should enable you to access just about anything you want; in the free version, you're limited to locations that Hotspot Shield chooses for you.

Hotspot Shield Free offers the option to have the free VPN automatically enabled whenever you connect to a wireless network that is deemed 'unsafe', the program offers peace of mind for those who work away from the home or office a lot. Online performance does seem to suffer a little when Hotspot Shield is enabled, but the bandwidth limit of 750MB per day is generous.

Download here: Hotspot Shield Free

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/XpjytZKadYHuY5Kqsnopd7.jpg

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/xnWb4NYAv5DU8HnyQExgqQ.jpg

3. Another characteristic shared with many of its contemporaries is the existence of a limited, free package in addition to paid-for subscriptions. Well, sort of. Rather than offering a traditional monthly subscription package, you are instead provided with 200MB of non-expiring data to use as you want.

When this runs out, you can purchase more data in bundles of 20GB or 100GB. If you feel that you'd like to use PrivateTunnel all the time, you can opt for a $30 per year package which give you unlimited data – see the 200MB as something of a taster session to see if you like everything.

As a VPN, PrivateTunnel works fairly well, although connections can be a little temperamental at times. It's all very easy to use, so there's little reason not to take it for a test drive.

Download here: PrivateTunnel

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/XpjytZKadYHuY5Kqsnopd7.jpg

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/AVDDW7kmL9R5eJtHP7wDTh.jpg
Free VPN tool freelan gives you total control over your connection, but its somewhat tricky setup means TunnelBear and Hotspot Shield Free are better choices for novice users
4. Freelan

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/Z3NPEW36KgeQUzUqXReN6.png

A free VPN designed for experienced users who are comfortable using the command line

The installation of Freelan is a little disconcerting for the uninitiated. Rather than just installing a regular program, the software installs new network drivers that take control of your web traffic. That's not a problem, but it's something that's worth pointing out right from the start.

Freelan is an open source tool and is free in absolutely every regard, but getting it set up can be tricky, particularly for novices. For more advanced users Freelan has a great deal to offer, but you should not expect your hand to be held every step of the way as well the likes of TunnelBear.

For most people this is going to be a program to avoid, but for the curious, the more technically-minded (there's no graphical user interface, so you'll be controlling it via the command line) and those who want to be in absolute control, it's ideal.

Download here: Freelan

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/XpjytZKadYHuY5Kqsnopd7.jpg

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/ZbcNa7U5yXfSC3iGcKCL76.jpg
Hide.me can be set to run automatically when Windows starts, though you're more likely to want to activate it manually when you need to carry out transactions like shopping or online banking
5. Hide.me

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/Z3NPEW36KgeQUzUqXReN6.png

A straightforward free VPN service that's simple to use, but more limited than some of the alternatives

Securing your connection with Hide.me is simplicity itself; all you need to do is hit the Connect button and you're ready to start browsing. If you want, you can spend a little time configuring options such which VPN protocol should be used. If you're comfortable tinkering with network settings, you can also change your DNS to something other than that offered by your ISP.

The free version of Hide.me features a 2GB monthly data cap, which makes it more limited than its paid-for counterparts, but is still a generous allowance. Another restriction to keep in mind is that there are only three location masks available: Canada, the Netherlands and Singapore.

You can set Hide.me to launch automatically whenever you start your computer, but the bandwidth limit means you're more likely to use it on an ad-hoc basis whenever you need to do something like shopping and online banking.

Performance is reasonable, though the occasional popups asking you to upgrade to a paid-for account can be distracting.

Download here: Hide.me

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/XpjytZKadYHuY5Kqsnopd7.jpg

See all web services and office software available to download on TechRadar
http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/f546MuM52Gs

Father’s Day gift ideas for 2019: 15 great gifts for the tech-savvy Aussie dad

We know that it’s hard to shop for dad, but that doesn’t mean you need succumb to the temptation of a multipack of socks and undies, or a necktie he's probably never going to wear. There's tiny speakers hidden in the arms of the glasses that will serenade dad with his favourite tunes and people around him will barely even realise! There's also audio augmented reality features on-board, with apps available that make excellent use of the tech on the Frames – there are apps for the golfer or a tourist looking for information on a city's major landmarks. Dad can even get on stage with Elvis if he's a fan. There's three hours of battery life, after which, sadly, the Bose Frames go back to being regular sunglasses. Authorised prescription lenses are currently not available, but Bose is in talks with third parties to make the appeal of the Frames more mainstream.

Read more: Bose Frames review

Nanoleaf Canvas

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/6vdnXTmuxQYAT6rVenyDKU.jpg

Smart lights aren't new any more, but then there's really nothing quite like the Nanoleaf Canvas on the market. These light panels are are touch- and voice-sensitive, and come with Alexa, Google Assistant and Siri support. Once up set up in dad's (or your) chosen design, they convert any boring wall into an interactive canvas of fun, colour and life. The Canvas has a rhythm module built in, so the lights will 'dance' to the music playing or, to spice things up, the family can play games on it together. If there's smart lights already set up, and they work with HomeKit, then each Canvas panel can be used a control button for different lighting scenes.

Read more: Nanoleaf Canvas review

Amazon Kindle ereaders

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/hpaDezX3d6pyCNPfnSwAgW.jpg

If your dad is an avid reader, give him the convenience of carrying his entire library around with him. The latest version of the Kindle Paperwhite is the best yet. With Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity globally, downloading books anywhere is a breeze. The screen light is easily adjusted to suit the reading environment and the battery generally lasts a couple of weeks between charges, even with the light on. And it’s the most cost-effective Kindle, too.

To truly pamper your book-loving dad, however, you might want to step up to the latest edition of the Kindle Oasis. It offers the best e-reading experience money can buy, and features a very easy-to-use navigation system in a beautifully designed device that now comes with adjustable hues for the reading light to make night-time reading a more pleasant experience.

Read more: Amazon Kindle Paperwhite (2018) review | Amazon Kindle Oasis hands-on review

Sony WF-1000XM3 Wireless Earbuds

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/eFcSaXQgtATEVLMC7aSbcE.jpg

If dad likes to shut the world out when he listens to his favourite music, podcasts or audiobooks, he doesn’t need to wear a massive set of cans on his head. The ability to call on a voice assistant is on-board, as is Bose’s new audio AR tech, which allows users to access the same apps they would on the Bose Frames mentioned above. Where this speaker stands out is in its excellent sound quality and the ability to call on not just one but two voice assistants. Sonos has now added both Alexa and Google Assistant support to the Sonos One and, if dad already has an existing Sonos speaker in the house somewhere, he can very easily have a multi-room setup with the two. With voice assistants on board, it’s of course easy to control all smart home devices while having his Spotify playlists crooning as well.

Read more: Sonos One review

Lenovo Smart Clock

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/kLmiK5QcU9A95zuXsHicoP.jpg

If you think smart speakers are so, well, last year, then perhaps you’d like to get dad a smart display instead. However, they can be rather large if space is an issue. So how about an unassuming smart clock instead? The Lenovo Smart Clock is an affordable device that will not just wake dad up every morning but will handle voice commands for connected gadgets as well. And it will work as a bedside speaker too! Dad can also charge his phone, thanks to the USB charging port on the clock. And if it takes a dunk in the water, it will float, so dad won’t have to take a deep dive to retrieve it. It has a wireless range of 15 feet and a battery life of 20 hours to keep the party rocking.

Read more: Ultimate Ears Boom 3 review

Nintendo Switch

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/eGMjZ7sYDe9twuspe7akAZ.jpg

There’s no age restrictions when it comes to playing video games, they’re for everyone to enjoy. And if dad loves a spot of gaming, then Nintendo’s hybrid console – if he doesn’t already have it – makes for an excellent gift. It offers the best of both worlds – for both home use and for playing on the go. And with an ever-growing library of amazing titles to choose from, dad will never have a dull moment.

However, the new Nintendo Switch Lite is already up for pre-order, if you think dad would be willing to wait for a belated Father’s Day gift. It’s designed solely for handheld gaming, with no video output to TV.

Read more: Nintendo Switch review

DJI Spark

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/6yB9ZVCHvt9P5VfGRwtfRg.jpg

Has dad ever tried flying a drone? If he’s found it intimidating in the past, introduce him to this pint-sized quadcopter from DJI. The Spark is small enough, and safe enough, to take off and land on the palm of your (or dad’s) hand, and can be controlled with gestures. Taking selfies, getting it to take off and land – it’s the closest thing there is to feel like a Jedi. There are plenty of modes on the app to explore the world from the air, making this perfect for beginners to get started with aerial photography. Being so small and light does have a drawback, though – just make sure dad isn’t flying this little fella around when it’s windy.

Read more: DJI Spark review

Canon EOS RP

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/gnwg2B2FA7h4PkqSDmi4Go.jpeg

Full-frame mirrorless cameras are all the rage these days, with manufacturers trying to outdo each other with their latest snappers. While most of them new cameras are expensive, Canon has one that’s under $2,000. So if dad is into photography, and you really would like to get him something special, the Canon EOS RP won’t disappoint. While it’s no secret that some people love it while others think Canon has made too many compromises, we really don’t have too many complaints with the camera. While you get what you pay for, the image quality is superb and Canon has never disappointed when it comes to colour reproduction. And with the R-mount lens adaptor also available, it’s possible to use the older EF lenses with the EOS RP.

Read more: Canon EOS RP review

Philips Hue lights

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/b8P8TDJRwaB44DeUE92sFj.jpg

Smart things were designed to make our lives easier, and a smart lighting system does more. They add ambience, allowing you to change the hue and the colour of the light, provided you have a bulb that supports those features. More importantly, they actually save money in the long run, reducing energy consumption and thus the energy bill. And one of the best smart lighting systems money can buy is from Philips Hue. If dad hasn’t already begun to set up a smart light system, there are starter kits to choose from – one where the hue of the light can be changed between white and yellow, while another that adds coloured bulbs to the system. They all need the Hue Bridge to work, which is connected to the home’s modem, the setup is simple and quick and makes a world of difference to the home’s ambience.

Read more: Philips Hue review

Samsung Galaxy Watch

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/Z4ysUiTvxBemFcjRnvLJS4.jpg

There are plenty of smartwatches to choose from these days, but the Samsung Galaxy Watch stands apart from the crowd by looking like a sophisticated, classic wristwatch. Its fitness tracking is one of its best features, and it’s got a rather decent four-day battery life. Its rotating bezel will take you on a tour of its user interface which, may we say, is one of the slickest operating systems we’ve seen. More importantly, it works with both Android and iOS phones, although it should be noted that iOS support is limited.

Read more: Samsung Galaxy Watch review

Tile Mate Bluetooth tracker

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/vBkBaDcnKD2fXoE4VDHE3Q.jpg

If dad is someone who constantly keeps misplacing his keys or wallet, you could make it easy for him to locate his belongings by gifting him a Bluetooth tracker. And the best ones are from Tile. The Tile Mate is the most affordable option and can locate any item that’s about 150 feet away from your dad’s phone. That battery lasts about 12 months and can easily be replaced. The Tile Mate now also comes with digital assistant support, so locating lost keys is as simple as asking, “Hey Google, ask Tile to find my keys” or “Alexa, ask Tile to find the remote”.

Audio-Technica AT-LP60 turntable

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/E7FyDdDSFcesCso3UyuzfX.jpg

It’s time for dad to get those dusty vinyls he’s been hoarding in the garage or shed. If he loves his old records, get him an easy-to-use turntable that won’t burn a hole in your pocket. The AT-LP60 from Audio-Technica is completely automatic, so it will queue an LP and then return the arm to its resting position without dad needing to lift a finger. It has a built-in phono preamp and the needle can be replaced if it wears out. It’s by far the best turntable there is for beginners.
http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/2P_ISe_8ltQ

Huawei Mate X release date pushed back, but next version may have even more screens

The foldable Huawei Mate X is unlikely to come out before November, which means a delay from the previously slated September launch, TechRadar learned at a press event at Huawei’s Shenzhen headquarters today.

There's no possibility of a September launch date anymore, which leaves the door open for the Samsung Galaxy Fold to be the first foldable to market. However, the company is certain the Mate X will launch before the end of 2019.

We also got wind of more exciting news: the next Mate X could have more screens, and it might come out as soon as next year.

Where will the Huawei Mate X follow-up fit more displays? By swapping out the steel rear cover in the current Huawei Mate X with a glass back, and those glass surfaces could become usable, touchable displays.

It’s a big engineering challenge to say the least – it might end up being years before the issues are worked out and we get glass backs on foldable phones. We don't even have them on the upcoming Mate X's 8-inch front display yet.

The Huawei Mate X release date is likely being pushed to November – but ideally not any later, as the company wants to get it out in time for the holiday shopping window before the Chinese Spring Festival in early 2020.

Mate X changes – and some that didn't pan out

At Huawei’s Shenzhen HQ, we saw an earlier ‘cert’ version of the Mate X, one that's slightly different from the phone spotted in the hands of Huawei CEO Ren Zhengfei in late July. The only changes coming to the final version are a slimmer lock button that runs flush when the phone is placed flat, and refinements in the 'Falcon hinge' - but the hinge won't be carbon fiber, as some have predicted.

Here's another plot twist that almost went down: the Mate X engineering team had tried other refinements – including replacing the steel back with an aluminum one, which would have saved 20g off the final weight.

Unfortunately, when the team tried this a few months ago (testing it out sometime between February and today), the aluminum material wasn’t strong enough. The steel back will remain in the final Mate X after all.

But the Mate X engineering team had a bunch of other ideas, too. One of those is the aforementioned glass back. Another is an 'sheet' display - think of it like a roll-out sun shade - that could extend from the bottom of the phone. The tech for that is still years out (even up to a decade) from being feasible, but it shows where the Huawei engineering team is thinking.

But, right now the Mate X front display is covered in plastic, as glass simply doesn't fold – yet.

There are clearly big challenges standing in the way, especially in the assembly process. The engineering team would need to deal with new gluing complications given the additional glass surfaces (and presumably their touchable display properties).
http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/GTx4QIM_nR4

Apple claims controversial iPhone battery warning is a ‘safety’ feature

Last week, it was discovered that iPhone users would lose Battery Health functionality when replacing their battery via a third-party service, leaving them unable to see diagnostics on how the battery is performing day-to-day and more broadly.

iPhone users who have had the batteries on their devices replaced by third parties were receiving the following blatant error message, even if a genuine battery was installed: ”Unable to verify this iPhone has a genuine Apple battery. Health information not available for this battery”.

Planning to replace your iPhone's battery? You may lose this feature

Apple responds

Apple has now responded to criticism that the message is purely designed to direct customers to its own, typically more expensive, replacement program by claiming that it’s a matter of user safety.

Speaking to The Verge, an Apple spokesperson said, “This information is there to help protect our customers from damaged, poor quality, or used batteries which can lead to safety or performance issues. This notification does not impact the customer’s ability to use the phone after an unauthorized repair.”

It could be reasonably argued that the inability to view the health, performance, and life expectancy of a battery does impact the customer’s ability to use the phone to its full extent.

As for Apple’s case, however, it could also be argued that the company can’t guarantee that the diagnostic data it’s displaying is accurate when the replacement has been undertaken by a third party, even if the battery itself is authentic.

iPhone battery replacements by third-parties may no longer void your Apple warranty

Other controversies

The legal implications for Apple if it were to display the diagnostic data from batteries replaced by a third party are unclear and would, likely, vary from region to region.

Last year, in Australia, Apple was fined AU$9 million by the country’s consumer watchdog after it told customers they weren’t entitled to repair or refund for their bricked iOS devices due to them having undergone third-party repairs.

The court found that “the mere fact that an iPhone or iPad had been repaired by someone other than Apple did not, and could not, result in the consumer guarantees ceasing to apply, or the consumer’s right to a remedy being extinguished”.

At the end of 2017, Apple also began to offer cheaper battery replacements for older iPhones due to a controversy dubbed BatteryGate.

Essentially, the more recent versions of iOS would throttle the CPU on older iPhones in order to maintain reasonable battery life, but Apple didn’t make this clear enough to users. It’s one of the main reasons the tech giant first implemented the Battery Health feature in iOS 12.

Apple's iPhone battery life claims are exaggerated, claims UK watchdog

Solutions?

As for the current controversy, Apple has told The Verge that users who are getting the ‘unauthorized’ warning message but believe that their battery is in fact authorized should take their device back to the service that replaced it in order to verify it.

This should re-enable the Battery Health functionality, but for those that have had their battery replaced by a third-party business, Apple currently isn’t offering a solution.

Apple MacBook Pro models deemed a fire risk banned from US flights

http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/UD9p5paV0KU

Upcoming GoPro Hero8 action cams shown off in new leaked images

GoPro has become a name synonymous with action cameras and, historically, each year the company has launched a new range of its superb snappers in September. The GoPro Hero6 Black arrived late September 2017, while the GoPro Hero7 Black (along with its cheaper siblings, the Hero7 Silver and the Hero7 White) came along exactly a year later in 2018.

So it should probably come as no surprise that rumors and leaks of the next generation of GoPros have begun to emerge from the woodwork.

Today, photography news site Photo Rumors has unearthed images of what appears to be a GoPro Hero8 snapper. While the leaked images aren’t particularly sharp, a grey figure 8 on the side of one does strongly hint that this is the next generation of GoPro camera. The pictures also indicate that GoPro has redesigned the Hero8 in order to accomodate new optional accessories, including a microphone, an external display and an LED light.

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/XJuzvtDbMmxuFs4s9mGgAL.jpg

We have previously heard hints of a redesign. Back in May, GoPro CEO Nick Woodman revealed that the company was looking to refresh the entire range across all the price points. That could also imply we’ll see not just a radically revised GoPro Hero8 Black, but possibly a Hero8 Silver and Hero8 White as well.

Expect even more buttery-smooth video

The upcoming GoPro Hero8 range will retain its predecessors' 4K video shooting capabilities, but rumors suggest it will double the ante, with the Hero8 Black potentially capable of recording at up 120fps at 4K (as opposed to the 60fps on the Hero7 Black), while Full HD 1080p videos could be shot at up to 480fps.

It's also anticipated that the eighth gen action camera will house the brand new GP2 processor under the hood. If that’s the case, we should see a marked improvement in performance over the (admittedly already excellent) GoPro Hero7 Black. The new processor could potentially improve the camera’s low-light performance and make the superb HyperSmooth image stabilization feature even more silky.

The best action cameras you can buy right now

DJI Osmo Action hands-on review

A 360-degree view

While discussing the company's Q1 2019 earnings results in May, Woodward also mentioned that it's expecting to announce a next-generation spherical camera in the fourth quarter of 2019. If that’s true, that's likely to be a successor to the GoPro Fusion that was released in mid-2018.

We haven’t had any word on what the Fusion 2 will be like, but the original is capable of shooting 5.2K resolution videos at up to 30fps. However, the current camera’s ‘over-capture’ feature – which converts 360-degree footage into regular widescreen videos – is quite time-consuming, meaning it's a product perhaps best suited to professionals. Hopefully, GoPro will make a follow-up more user-friendly to give it mainstream appeal.

All this is still speculation, of course, but if GoPro sticks to its usual routine, we’ll likely have an official announcement for the eighth-generation action cameras (and perhaps even the Fusion 2) sometime next month.

The ultimate GoPro action cameras and accessories

http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/qJbEe9MWW1I

Currys is offering the Surface Laptop 2 for just £8.79 to A-Level students

There are loads of Back to School deals out there, but this might be the best one we’ve ever seen, with Currys PC World offering A-Level students the chance to buy the Surface Laptop 2 for just £8.79 – a huge saving of 99%!

Of course, there are some caveats to this incredible deal. Speed, or how quickly your website loads is the most important factor. When a user arrives at your website it needs to respond quickly – it feels more natural and it’s what we all expect these days, no one likes waiting for anything anymore!

There are several factors at play here, so let’s look at the key factors that can up your site’s SEO…

How to choose a web hosting service?

Take a look at our web-hosting tips eBook

What are the different types of web hosting?

Bandwidth

The bandwidth available to your website to broadcast and the capacity available to you when viewing - only the former is relevant here as the search engine crawlers generally run from the fastest networks around they still ‘see’ your site very quickly if the sites available bandwidth is good enough. But, if you have built your website with a mass of inappropriately large images and videos this will also slow the site down and impede user (and search crawler) experience, thus impacting negatively on the site.

The sweet spot therefore is a fast host with plenty of bandwidth and a well optimised website in terms of all the content therein.

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/oHUK7vsufHFapkDjJyHXsX.jpeg

Uptime

Uptime is the amount of time your website is active for people to view and visit it. Poor uptime creates an adverse experience for your users and thus reduces the ‘value’ of the site in the search algorithms matrix. Furthermore, if your website were down at the time the search engines were crawling your website this can be extremely bad.

So, hosts with poor uptime performance should be avoided at all costs. There are a number of ways you can find out how good your potential host is from online data sources and third-party monitoring.

Cost

It is likely (but not a rule) that the lower the price of the hosting you are using the worse it will be. Why? The lower the cost the less bandwidth you will be allocated, and more likely the lower quality hardware you will be placed on.

Hardware with many processor cores, solid state hard drives and 10GB networking will outperform single processor, spinning disk, 1GB network systems by orders of magnitude on a number of different levels.

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/bXy3nBdbNkadCFnRDiEgT4.jpg

Network

The network your website is being broadcast from can be a huge factor in either improving all the previous points or even undermining the good ones! If you have a fast server which has great uptime, but the network is in the outer reaches of the Antarctic with very few routes to anywhere else, the impact will again be speed performance.

Finding the best web host

To find the best web host possible for your site you should look for a host with the following combination:

1. A very fast network located on or near major points of presence (in the UK these include London and Manchester), and with the ISP having negotiated priority routing (known as Tier 1 routing).

2. Excellent hardware based on multi-core and even multi-machine hardware with RAID (5,6 or 10) arrays, based on solid state hard drives, and redundancy capability to mitigate hardware failure and downtime. Note: wherever possible make sure you grab a backup of your website and associated data regularly (but do bear in mind the new GDPR rules).

3. CDN (Content Delivery Networks) and distribution of load points for common libraries such as JQuery can also dramatically improve load time performance, reduce bandwidth requirements from your main host and thus improve user experience and load times. CDNs are a way of co-locating your image and video (generally) content such that it takes the load of your main host. Your website html and operational code remains on your hosting server along with Database (another massive area of consideration – more on this, below), and consequently transactional information. The images and videos are placed on a distributed network of hosting usually designed to deliver more ‘locally’ to the user. So, my website may be hosted in the UK but the images and videos can be loaded more locally for users in Australia and the US for example, as such massively improving latency and the feel of the website for those users.

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/Sh4SNG5GwNT5QCvHVs9ABk.jpg

Databases

A word on databases; Most functional websites use databases, let’s face it, if you just have a static site with minimal to no updates it doesn’t matter how fast your website is it’s unlikely to rank well. So, assuming you have a database, everything we have discussed so far becomes doubled up. The same rules apply – a very fast web host with poor database service will impede the performance of your website.

The size and scale of your database needs to be considered here. Most larger scale sites need separate and dedicated hardware for their databases, keeping the site and database on the same hosting server both increases risk, and in many cases reduces overall performance.

It goes without saying at this point that a well-designed website with a good codebase and well-engineered database architecture are also key factors.

Improving SEO performance

To summarise, fast hosting, well linked by the underlying IPs (Internet Protocol addresses), especially with a number of high performing sites, boost each other’s potential. Whereas bulk, (cheap) relatively slow hosting by an ISP with masses of low-quality sites will potentially adversely affect the SEO performance of your website.

Now we’ve covered web hosting, for some more general tips on boosting SEO, try the following:

UX is key, is your site giving users a great experience? We already know that businesses, organisations, and government entities must follow certain guidelines in order to protect sensitive information. However, the education sector equally possesses important assets of data to protect. According to the report sponsored by VMware, cyber-attacks on UK universities presents an increasing risk to national security. This clearly indicates that the education sector must begin addressing any risks posed from cyber-hacks with immediate action for overall security.

How is the education sector under threat?

Over the recent years, the education sector has become more susceptible to cyber hacks due to the following motives:

Financial gain – A motive for hackers carrying out an attack on an education institution is often for financial gain. With Universities & Colleges handling a large number of student fees, they’re a prime target for cybercriminals;

Data theft – All institutions hold student and staff data, including sensitive details like names and addresses. This type of information can be valuable to cyber criminals who could potentially exploit the information to a third party.

Find the best free anti-malware software

Why are cyber hacks becoming so common within the education sector?

As seen above, schools have become vulnerable to hacks due to sensitive data and financial gains. However, the attacks have now become so common and often successful to the detriment of the industry; let’s look at a few key reasons:

A lack of resources– potentially the lack of budget to invest in cybersecurity, be it security software or staff;

Cultural issues – a ‘Bring Your Own Device’ culture is common in educational institutions and can present difficulties in securing the wider network, particularly with IT staff already facing stretched resources, without a suitable MDM solution;

An absence of policy – setting out policies for using the network and making sure they’re adhered to can be difficult in large institutions with a dynamic user population.

Find the best malware removal tools

How can the education sector take measures towards cybersecurity?

As mentioned, the cyber security related risks from technological devices remains a primary concern for the education sector. Therefore, we have devised a few top tips recommended to follow so that data remains secure and safe across the system:

Password protection on laptops and other devices.

People forget to secure their password safely and securely, loosely sharing information amongst peers and other staff members. Therefore, one of the first basic yet most effective cybersecurity practices is to secure and protect passwords.

The best practices to secure passwords includes using a mix of characters, not re-using university provided passwords, changing annually, and never sharing your password.

Provide school network security training for staff and students.

Most data breaches are the result of human error. A strong school network security regimen holds no great significance if students and staff don’t understand how to mitigate risk. Therefore, introduce cybersecurity training for all staff and students who regularly make use of technology on school grounds. Such training may include:

How to identify safe and unsafe sites

Spotting phishing attempts or other scams

Using antiviruses, malware or another frontline defence

Find the best in free firewalls

By investing time and expenses in the actual training the mitigation strategy in place will be twice as more effective; if a risk does develop it will be more likely to receive an early detection and do-little damage once addressed.

Place clear policies and more importantly ensure everyone follows it

The more you know where your vulnerabilities are, the better prepared you can be to prevent against them. If you already have cybersecurity policies in place, a formal audit can help you validate whether your university is enforcing the policies that were set.

Audits are typically performed by third-parties. If you don’t have clear cybersecurity policies in place, an assessment of your technology infrastructure, organisational policies, and user-training can give you the full picture of where your biggest risks lie.

Find the best antivirus

Importance of Cybersecurity within Education

It is apparent that today no sector is immune from the threat of a cyberattack and this sadly includes schools and universities. The voluminous data these institutions hold as well as the increasing number of connected devices makes this sector a vulnerable domain for cyber-hacking.

Given the complexity of networks today, and of the threats to their security, traditional anti-virus solutions are also no longer enough. Therefore, manually following the above best practices ensures you are covered as a vicinity from all areas. Cyber security is no longer considered just an IT issue but is holistically approached throughout the organisation and hence should be treated as a collaborative effort to mitigate.

Nick Walter is the Head of Commercial and Education at Acer.

Find the best in internet security suites

http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/pDkdcI5FlM4

Champions League and Europa League finals to get free live stream from BT Sport

Horrible, wasn't it. Even after a deeper-dive showcase at E3 2018 , it's almost impossible to say. Broadly sci-fi, featuring elements of trippy horror, the first game from Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima's new studio looks set to meld the techno-future trappings of the Metal Gear series with his own mind-bending Silent Hill horror, too.

But at this point, it's almost all entirely conjecture. Sony and Kojima are playing up to the mysterious nature of the game, letting very few details be revealed. As the first game from Kojima Studios, there's a lot riding on its success, and the PR campaign to drum up interest is already creating a fever-pitch of anticipation.

After his well-publicized departure from Konami, Kojima announced Death Stranding at Sony’s E3 2016 presentation and made something of a massive impression.

While the entire gaming planet tries to piece together the bread crumb trail to find out what exactly we're all waiting for, let this article guide you through everything there is to know about Death Stranding so far.

Cut to the chase

What is it? Honestly, who really knows. It’s the debut title from Hideo Kojima’s new studio Kojima Studios.

When can I play it? Sometime in the next 2 years.

What will it cost? Likely to be around $60/£45/AU$59

What can I play it on? PS4

Death Stranding trailers and screenshots

The Tokyo Game Show 2018 trailer revealed voice-acting veteran Troy Baker has joined the cast as the mysterious villain The Man in the Golden Mask.

E3 2018 brought Death Stranding gameplay to our eyes and left our minds somewhat confused.

Before E3 2018, Death Stranding featured at the Game Awards 2017. Coming in at nearly eight minutes long, this isn't a quick watch and unfortunately it doesn't answer many of the questions we have about the game (actually we think we have more). Watch it for yourself below:

The reveal trailer that was shown at E3 in 2016 may have been more than 3 minutes long, but it didn’t reveal much about the game at all other than that it would star The Walking Dead’s Norman Reedus.

A second even longer and 4K trailer was shown at The Game Awards at the end of 2016. This trailer starred Hannibal’s Mads Mikkelsen and Guillermo Del Toro and although it didn’t give us any more of an idea of what the game will actually even be about (in fact leaving us more confused than we were before) it did send expectations soaring.

From what we can guess, the events of the second trailer take place before the events of the first, since the baby being transported in the incubator (in the second) is almost certainly Norman Reedus (as seen in the first trailer). They have the same handcuff and stomach scars.

As for what this means we have absolutely no idea. Bear in mind Kojima has, in the past, been a fan of including footage in trailers that never made it into the final game. Anyone remember the 'Grand Theft Auto' exchange from the first MGS3 trailer?

Death Stranding release date

There’s no definite release date just yet but Kojima did tell fans during the 2016 Tokyo Game Show that Death Stranding would be out before 2019. During a recent interview at the 2017 Game Awards, Kojima seemed to be happy with the development progress of the game, stating that a lot of work had been done with the Decima engine.

In an interview with Dengeki PlayStation (via Wccftech) at the end of 2017, Kojima said that development of the game was going well: “Development on Death Stranding is going well enough that [sony Interactive Entertainment] told us, ‘We have never before seen a game being created at such a fast pace.’ We are planning an announcement that will further surprise everyone in 2018.”

However, that runs counter to what a leak from an Amazon UK listing revealed. It put Death Stranding down for a release of March 29, 2019, which would see the game slip well beyond that 2018 aim. For a game that no-one is still all that sure of in terms of how it will play, let alone anyone having actually played it, this feels realistic.

That said, there's lots to suggest this was little more than a retail placeholder from Amazon. For instance, it appeared alongside a listing for The Last of Us 2 on the same date – competition that would seem bizarre for two first-party Sony titles to generate against each other. With March 29 2019 the end of the financial year, it's more likely simply a system default listing.

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/8dZmGfzVnQJdNVZiBvgUR3.jpg

The most recent update on development came from Kojima at Tokyo Game Show 2018, where he revealed at the team is "in the phase where I’m holding the controller the whole day, embedding new elements while playing the game".

In addition, Kojima revealed that the voice actor strikes have held up development as he was unable to record with Norman Reedus and Mads Mikkelsen during that period - so recording is still taking place now.

What do we know so far about Death Stranding?

Troy Baker is a villain

Veteran voice-actor Troy Baker (who voices Joel in The Last of Us series) stars in Death Stranding as the enigmatic antagonist The Man in the Golden Mask. Baker was introduced in a teaser trailer shown during Tokyo Game Show, with his skull-masked character summoning a black tar-like demon to take on Norman Reedus' character.

E3 2018

E3 brought a brand new trailer, few answers and even more questions. The trailer for the game had the most revealing description we've seen yet, stating the game is about Sam ‘Porter’ Bridges, a delivery man who must journey across a vast world so that he can “reunite the shattered world one step at a time.”

We also got look at two more famous faces who will make an appearance in the game – Léa Seydoux and Lindsay Wagner.

It'll be at E3 2018

Sony has confirmed the time and date of its E3 conference as June 11 at 6pm PT/ 9am BST. And Sony Worldwide Studios boss, Shawn Layden, has confirmed during a PlayStation Blogcast that Death Stranding will feature. Layden said that Sony has decided to "refresh and remake its show" and that fans can expect "deep dives" into games like Death Stranding and Spider-Man, with updates on how development is progressing.

Hideo Kojima has been doing some teasing on Twitter with a brand new screenshot and an E3 countdown. As you'd expect, the screenshot raises more questions than it answers. Hopefully we'll get a little more to go on when E3 rolls around.

Gameplay

At the moment, we don’t know all that much about Death Stranding other than that it’ll be an open world action title starring Norman Reedus and Mads Mikkelsen.

It’s not likely, however, to be the standard open world action fare we’ve grown used to, not that we’d expect anything standard from Kojima.

According to Kojima his first title with Sony is going to be “slightly more edgy” and in an interview with IGN he stated that though he wants “to create something that’s what people expect” he also wants to bring “something new that people haven’t seen before.”

Unfortunately, this raises more questions than it answers.

We do know that Kojima is planning to do something different with the game’s mechanics, most notably around the concept of dying and involving the baby that has appeared in every trailer. Kojima told IGN his plans for the mechanics of Death Stranding were inspired by a Japanese short story.

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/xmSmPnhJjMENdSdWotqmem.jpg

In the story it’s stated that the first tool mankind creates is a stick for protection but that the second tool mankind created was a rope to keep things close and secure. “Most of your tools in action games are sticks” Kojima explained, “You punch or you shoot or you kick. The communication is always through these 'sticks.' In [Death Stranding], I want people to be connected not through sticks, but through what would be the equivalent of ropes… But of course you will be able to use the sticks too.”

Unfortunately we haven’t seen any gameplay that would give us a better insight into how this rope approach will actually work.

In an interview with <ins>The Telegraph</ins>, Sony Interactive Entertainment America's President, Shawn Layden, admitted that he's played Death Stranding and that the game is, indeed, "up and running."

After Hideo Kojima appeared at this year's E3 without any new information about, or footage from, Death Stranding, rumors began to circulate that the game is in for an extremely drawn out development process.

However, the mysterious game is apparently far enough along that Layden has played some prototype levels, though he admits "I couldn't explain to you what the game is..."

When asked if the game is as revolutionary as is being promised, Layden says it's "all that and more!" after what The Telegraph calls a "thoughtful pause."

Layden isn't the only person that's struggled to get to grips with Death Stranding; at a

No one got it!"
Before this, the game's star Mads Mikkelsen <ins>admitted </ins>he "got lost" when Kojima tried to explain the game's plot to him.

Though it's comfort to know that the game has gotten to the point in its development process that Layden is able to get hands on with it, it's less comforting that so many people close to Death Stranding are so perplexed by it. Or maybe that's exciting? We have to say we can't wait to find out more.

Sporadic details

Though Kojima has been coy, he’s given some nice teases into what we can expect from Death Stranding in terms of tone and gameplay modes.

At the Tokyo Game Show, Kojima told fans the game would have a female protagonist and would feature online co-op play.

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/HpEsWL488U6qjrjT3eHrg4.jpg

We know the game will run on the Decima engine which was created by Horizon: Zero Dawn developers, Guerilla Games. Kojima praised this engine during PSX 2016 as being an excellent engine for creating open world games, something that Horizon: Zero Dawn’s reception suggests has an element of truth to it.

Though its unsettling trailers suggest otherwise, Kojima has said that Death Stranding won’t be as dark as some fans are expecting. It’s certainly not a horror game, he told Glixel, and it would have comedic moments which isn’t entirely surprising considering the overarching tone of the Metal Gear series.

An impressive cast

We already knew Death Stranding had some big names attached to it including Norman Reedus and Mads Mikkelsen . But now we know they'll be joined by writer and actress Emily O'Brien and the voice of video games, Troy Baker.

O'Brien recently posted a picture to Instagram which showed her alongside Baker and Reedus, with a caption stating "Honored to be working alongside these two fine lads on [Hideo Kojima's] new project Death Stranding."

While Baker is well known for his starring roles in video games such as The Last of Us and Bioshock Infinite, O'Brien has had roles on both TV and in games, featuring in Telltale's Guardian's of the Galaxy and Batman: The Enemy Within as well as Rock in a Hard Place.

Players won't die

In a recent interview with IGN, Hideo Kojima was slightly more open with details than he usually is. The strange underwater sequence from the 2017 Game Awards trailer for example? That's apparently a kind of purgatory where players will go and freely explore when they die in the game, though Kojima notes that "death will never pull you out of the game."

The game apparently explores the themes of life and death and it's for this reason that Kojima would like to explore the traditional death mechanic in games and let players know that in-game death isn't the end for them when it happens.

In this underwater area, he explains, “you're not dead or alive. It's the equivalent of that screen that says 'Continue?' and a counter ticking down towards zero.” When players decide they're ready to leave and return to the game world, they won't be returned to a point before their death. Instead the game acknowledges their defeat and coming back to life is more of a reincarnation than a respawn.

There's a weird time rain

During the trailer shown at the 2017 Game Awards, fans noticed there's a strange kind of rain that has an effect on time. In makes plants grow in wilt and makes human bodies age and degenerate when it touches them. The rain is apparently called Timefall and it has a big role to play in the game's story.

What's the deal with the babies?

There's been some seriously strange recurring baby imagery in the footage we've seen for Death Stranding that's included Norman Reedus cradling a baby while standing nude on a beach as well as having one living inside his throat. According to Kojima in an interview with IGN, the baby is apparently the same baby and it's a part of the game mechanics as well as the overarching plot. We assume it's related to the idea of not ever finitely dying but Kojima didn't confirm this.

There will be online elements

We already knew there would be online co-op elements in the game after Kojima confirmed it at the Tokyo Game Show, but in a recent IGN interview he acknowledged that he's been keeping up with recent players reactions to things like microtransactions.

“I think there are a lot of people out there who still enjoy single-player games, aside from some microtransactions." This suggests that while the game will have online co-op elements, they won't make up the entirety of the game.

What could it all mean?

Though the game’s trailers don’t tell us much about how we’ll eventually play Death Stranding, they do reveal some important thematic elements.

Quotes from William Blake, the repeated appearance of ruined dolls, and the inclusion of what looks like oil (but could very well be ink) and dead sea creatures suggests Kojima will be exploring the fractious relationship between man and the natural world and the impact it has on us and future generations.

The littering of dead crabs on beaches and tanks with definitely living tentacles coming out of them suggests to us a post-apocalyptic world over-run with robotic sea creatures which would certainly be interesting. After all, Kojima is working closely with Guerilla Games whose Horizon: Zero Dawn game focused on robotic dinosaurs.

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/QPdSzF9wqweXj25B96iJy8.jpg

There’s also a curious mix of futuristic technology and elements of the past in the game’s various trailers.

In the second game trailer though Mads Mikkelsen is wearing a modern army uniform and appears to be using some kind of cable, the undead soldiers around him are wearing WW2 era uniforms and the game world outside of the tunnel he’s in is almost certainly from the second world war time period.

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/wCqxSbemSU5e6hjMndbLAD.jpg

Whether this mix of past and future will manifest itself as time travelling or simply alternate universe science fiction isn’t clear.

Safe to say, as a Kojima title, there’s a lot of mystery and symbolism at play here and fans online are tearing through what little materials there are to try and find out more information about the game.

We’ll keep updating as more solid information becomes available.

The best PS4 games you can play right now

http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/H2IsIoJCoPI

Google blocked 100m spam Gmail messages using AI

Google's Gmail is used by 1.5bn people each month with 5m businesses using the service as part of G Suite and one of the biggest draws of the service is its built-in security protections.

Through the use of machine learning (ML), the company is able to block 99.9 percent of spam, phishing and malware from ending up in user's inboxes.

However, by implementing new protections powered by Google's open-source machine learning framework TensorFlow, the search giant has succeeded at blocking an additional 100m spam messages each day.

A look inside Google's security team

How to make your email more secure

Half of malicious emails tied to credential phishing

Google is now blocking spam categories that were previously very hard to detect. By using TensorFlow to scan incoming emails, the company is now able to block image-based messages, emails with hidden embedded content and messages from new domains trying to hide a low volume of spam within legitimate traffic.

Using ML to block spam

ML is helping Google catch spam by allowing the company to identify patterns in large data sets that humans might not catch. The technology also makes it easier to adapt quickly to new tactics used by spammers while personalizing spam protections for each user as one person's spam may be an important message for someone else.

Applying ML at scale can be both complex and time consuming which is why TensorFlow contains many components to make ML easier and more efficient. TensorFlow Extended (TFX) is one of these components that allows Google to deploy ML pipelines in a quick and standardized fashion while TensorBoard allows it to monitor model training pipelines and quickly evaluate new models to determine their usefulness.

TensorFlow also provides the flexibility to train and experiment with different models in parallel. This helps businesses develop the most effective approach as opposed to being limited to running one experiment at a time.

Google is also experimenting with TensorFlow in other security-related areas such as phishing and malware detection in its ongoing goal to make the internet a safer place.

Also check out the best email client, best email marketing software and best email hosting

http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/wQQ1LXLPinU

Luigi's Mansion 3 release date, news, and features

It’s been six long years since Nintendo last released a game in the Luigi’s Mansion series, and with fans beginning to give up hope of another, the announcement that a sequel will hit Nintendo Switch in 2019 is very welcome news indeed.

Announced with a trailer during a Nintendo Direct on September 13, 2018 the tentatively named Luigi’s Mansion 3, is set to be released on Switch at some point in 2019 - so far no official release date has been divulged.

No other details about the spooky new installation of Luigi’s flagship franchise have been released as of yet. However the trailer shows Luigi creeping through a haunted mansion with ghosts bursting out from behind cleaning supplies as he battles them with his trusty new Poltergust G-00 (which is essentially a glorified vacuum cleaner).

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/7yTRZ6VtYyHVmiZDVrUJq7.jpg

With the first two games focussing on Luigi’s efforts to save his brother Mario from the haunted mansion, we imagine Mario has got himself into trouble again, although details on the premise of the third installation are yet to be announced.

The last Nintendo Direct broadcast Luigi’s apparent death, with his soul appearing to leave his body - so whether the new game will address this is yet to be seen.

Fans of the second game, Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon will be pleased to know that the mischievous little Polterpup makes a return, most likely to cause havoc for ghost-busting plumber.

Cut to the chase

What is it? The third entry in Nintendo's spooky series

When can I play it? 2019 - no official date has been announced yet

What can I play it on? Nintendo Switch

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/iJ3nrCfERhpawW5ANauVVW.jpg

Luigi's Mansion 3 release date

All we know so far is that the game will be available on Switch in 2019, but if you can’t wait that long, fear not - the original Luigi’s Mansion is being re-released on 3DS on October 12, so you can get your ghost-busting skills up to scratch in preparation for the new installment.

The rebooted version of the Gamecube classic will have a fun new feature that allows you to play in multiplayer, much like the second in the series.

Luigi’s Mansion 3 trailers

Although the 41 second trailer doesn’t give away much, it does give us a sneak peek at the high quality graphics and gameplay. However, with Luigi’s apparent death being broadcast on the last Nintendo Direct, fans are speculating that Luigi may actually be a ghost himself in this new incarnation... in any case, we can’t wait to find out.

Here’s how Nintendo fans are reacting to the news:

It seems like Nintendo has made a smart move and appeased its fans, but with very few details about the new game available, we will continue to update this story and more announcements are made.

Nintendo Switch review: the only place to play Luigi's Mansion 3

http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/Akc-UScezcg

Ghost of Tsushima: release date, trailers and news

First announced at 2017’s Paris Games Week, Ghost of Tsushima is a brand new IP from Sucker Punch which will be exclusive to PlayStation 4.

Though Sucker Punch is largely known for the inFamous games, the developer is departing quite significantly from the inFamous formula with this new game. The trailer shows a huge open world that almost looks like a painting with a soaring atmospheric soundtrack.

We see our samurai challenge Mongol invaders in a combat style that reminded us of Assassin's Creed. But as well as up front and outright combat, there will be an emphasis on stealth with players using the element of surprise to avoid being outnumbered.

Check out the gameplay debut trailer below:

Before this we saw the announcement trailer that was released at Paris Games Week.

Though it was captured in the game engine, it doesn’t feature much in terms of gameplay. What it does show, however, is the game world we’ll be playing in and it’s clear that Sucker Punch is aiming for a stunning aesthetic. You can watch it for yourself below:

Though it doesn't focus on in-game footage or gameplay, there was also an enlightening panel held at PSX with several members of the game's development team.

Watch below for details on the above trailer and what kind of research has gone into it.

News and features

The main character is Jin Sakai - but he's not alone

Ghost of Tsushima focuses on samurai Jin Sakai but you will also gather allies such as archer Masako (who was you might remember from the trailer).

It’ll be set in Feudal Japan

As revealed by the game’s announcement trailer, Ghost of Tsushima will be set in 13th century Japan - the time of the Mongol invasions. In the year 1274, the Mongols made their first stop on the island of Tsushima. You'll play Jin, one of the last of the samurai on the devastated island, determined to quash the invasion and push the Mongols out despite the odds being stacked against him.

The game's art director, Jason Connell, stated in a recent PSX panel for the game that the team are taking an "inspired by" approach to the game with the setting serving as a "jumping off point" for a completely original story.

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/Uj4Lksynqw4MyYPaAhrWK8.jpg

There will be an open world and you’ll play in the third-person

Though it’s very different from Sucker Punch’s previous games in many ways, Ghost of Tsushima will bear one similarity to inFamous with its third-person perspective; this time players will take up the role of a samurai called Jin.

The game will have a huge open world. Specifically, the setting will be the large island of Tsushima, located off the coast of Japan. Tsushima is a geographically diverse place and the game’s trailer shows that players will be able to travel from lush forests, to rugged mountains and towns filled with interesting characters.

Judging by trailer footage it looks likely that the player will do the majority of terrain traversal on horseback.

Gameplay

We’ve seen very little of gameplay thus far, but given the setting and overarching storyline it has the potential to be interesting. Playing a samurai unsurprisingly means there will be both action and stealth elements but there seem to be some plans to mix up the formula.

The samurai the player will take control of, for example, is the one of the last of his kind and as a result he’s forced to shed traditional samurai tactics and form a new method of fighting call the ‘Way of the Ghost’.

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/L7DL2bFP58efCsuLLXGY8H.jpg

While we don’t know what this Way of the Ghost actually involves, we're interested because it’s an entirely new method of fighting necessitated by there being only one samurai facing an entire army. All of this together makes us think there will be a heavy emphasis on tactical stealth and the use of enhanced (perhaps mildly supernatural) powers.

According to the game's listing on the New Zealand PlayStation Store, players will be building the legend of 'the Ghost' in a tale "inspired by classic samurai stories."

There will be a range of weapons

Naturally weapons will be key in this game and from the trailer we can see that there will be a wide range of them. Alongside the traditional samurai katana, we also glimpsed long bows, armored horses and plenty of fire.

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/x7opG7qkhYxyE9LDVRu33R.jpg

The villain will be interesting

Alongside an intriguing protagonist, we’re also anticipating a villain of substance. The player will be facing the Mongol Empire, known for its advanced horseback and archery skills as well as its ferocity.

The leader of this army will be the player’s main enemy and Sucker Punch has described this leader as being an “uncomfortably reasonable killer.” How this will manifest itself in the game is unclear but it suggests an engaging story line and hero/villain dynamic.

We're expecting to hear more about Ghost of Tsushima at this year's PlayStation Experience taking place in early December. Keep checking back here for more updates!

It could use Japanese dialogue

During a

After applause that couldn't be mistaken for anything other than affirmation, he stated "Noted, thank you."
While this isn't a confirmation of anything, it does suggest that Ghost of Tsushima could very well go down the route of games such as Nier: Automata with dialogue entirely in Japanese alongside English subtitles. There’s no sign of a digit reader on the front or rear of these S10e renders, and it’s unlikely Samsung will omit the technology altogether.

This will increase ease of accessing the phone and will free up space below the screen, although the display is said to be smaller than the Galaxy S10 with current predictions pegging it at 5.8 inches.

In addition the S10e is to have only a dual-lens camera, instead of a tri-lens camera that the S10 and S10+ will have.

Like its larger siblings the S10e will not have a notch, with a front camera surrounded by screen instead and it appears to also have a headphone jack on the the bottom. Again, the leaked images here suggest this is true, with rear shots of the device showing only two lenses, a ‘punch-hole’ camera and a headphone jack.

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/KgpEReZ7jFkVdWBfPHVoS8.jpg

The front and back of the Samsung Galaxy S10. Suggested prices for the device starts at €749 (about US$850, £660, AU$1200). "We've played 20 plus minutes of it last week and it is exceptional in terms of its like level of polish depth and what living inside of the Star Wars world is a Jedi and I think people will be blown away by."

A Padawan called Cal?

According to rumored information from a Star Wars marketing day (which obviously made its way to Reddit) the story will take place roughly five years after Revenge of the Sith and will follow surviving Padawan Cal (via GamesRadar). This rumor also states that one of the game's main plot points will revolve around Cal's mentor figure - a woman named Ceres.

It's set after Revenge of the Sith

We don't know the specific time in which the game is set, but we've heard that it will take place at some point between Episodes 3 and 4, after the end of Revenge of the Sith but before Luke Skywalker's appearance in A New Hope.

This places it after the Galactic Empire hunted the 10,000-strong Jedi Order practically to extinction, leaving only a small fraction of Jedi alive (aka Order 66). With the promise that the game will be set 'in the dark times', it sounds like our Jedi protagonist may be more the hunted than the hunter.

You'll play as a young padawan

EA's official webpage for Fallen Order specifies you'll play "a surviving Padawan", technically meaning a Jedi apprentice rather than a fully-fledged master of the Force. Given the dearth of living mentors left to train you, it's possible Obi-Wan Kenobi or Yoda – or some less high-profile Jedi, like Quinlan Vos – will appear in a supporting role.

The single-player mode comes first

Respawn co-founder Vince Zambella tweeted about the upcoming game, describing it as an 'SP' (single-player) story. While a multiplayer component seems likely, given both Respawn's strengths in the area and EA's focus on online play, it sounds like the primary focus this time could be on a well-delivered single-player experience.

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/pmowM5FVDrqGHBbdzLoeQm.jpg

Star Wars: Battlefront II (2017)

I find your lack of faith disturbing

It's been a bit of a fallow year for Star Wars, with Star Wars: A Solo Story struggling in cinemas and the negative player response to EA Dice's Star Wars: Battlefront 2 – largely in reaction to its prevalent use of microtransactions – still in recent memory.

Jedi: Fallen Order has been handed to a different studio, albeit one that's still a subsidiary of EA. But Respawn has garnered a lot of respect as the studio behind Titanfall and Titanfall 2, two critically acclaimed sci-fi action games that pit players against each other in giant mechanized suits, and which both came with strong single-player and multiplayer offerings.

So, while we haven't heard much about Fallen Order so far, it looks like the game is in safe hands.

Keep checking back here for all the latest Jedi: Fallen Order news

Star Wars Galaxies: how modders are keeping the dream of a Star Wars MMO alive

http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/CyWqT8-hXIE
