Online luxury fashion retailer NET-A-PORTER today announced the limited availability of DVF | Made for Glass, an exclusive version of Google Glass that brings a designer look to geek chic. Priced at $1800 (about UK£1058, AU$1911), the limited edition eyewear is intended for the ladies, designed by Diane von Furstenberg and available in a handful of stylish colors including brown, teal, plum, charcoal and white, each with matching shades. The DVF | Made for Glass series joins the company's Mr. Porter line for men, offering bold, thin or split frames complete with UV lens clip for a slightly more affordable $1650 (about UK£969, AU$1752). Tech-savvy fashionThe DVF | Made for Glass collection is being sold in an exclusive package that includes Google Glass, a choice of five frames and shades, a mono earbud and case. "We are thrilled to offer Glass to our tech-savvy customers who are true leaders and innovators in style and lifestyle," says NET-A-PORTER Group Founder and Chairman Natalie Massenet. The company describes the lightweight eyewear as "elegant frames meet cutting-edge technology" intended to make Google Glass "flatter every face shape." Currently only available for shipping to US customers, DVF | Made for Glass supports prescription lenses and includes a one-year warranty; however, the verdict is still out as to whether or not this collection will make the wearer look like any less of a Glasshole. 3. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/TRBC/Software/mobile-office-suites-shootout-470-75.jpgThe services provided by Apple, Google and Microsoft are becoming more alike, both in terms of use and spread. Apple has revamped its cloud offerings, moving the iWork suite into iCloud and allowing use on Windows machines. Microsoft is in the process of dramatically increasing the functionality of Office 365, adding additional security and storage space. Google Docs has become one of the go-to web-based services for writing, creating a slideshow and so on, with no subscription or specific operating system needed. For many years Apple has been seen as a company for those who are "creative", offering top of the range creative software such as Final Cut and Sound Track. As businesses became more interested in Apple's technology – mainly because of the iPad – the company has had to up its game in terms of office software, improving the iWork suite through a serious of both visual and functional updates. Office giantUnlike Apple, Microsoft has never had the problem of being the underdog in terms of businesses using its software and hardware. An increasing amount of Microsoft's revenue comes from enterprise, with over one billion people using Office. That hasn't stopped the company from innovating, adding new visual and functional changes over the years. In 2014, Microsoft brought Office to the iPad, again increasing the reach and usage of the software. http://cdn0.mos.techradar.futurecdn.net//art/TRBC/officeforipad1-420-100.jpg Google's offering, Google Docs, came about after the firm's success with email. The software is, like all things Google, free to use and relies on a network connection (unless you run the Chrome browser, in which case you can set it up for offline access, albeit with some important features missing such as spell checking, for example). Google recently introduced the Chromebook, opening up manufacturing to various OEMs just as it did with Android. While some may see the need for an internet connection to be a flaw, it's not so much of an issue with the prevalence of Wi-Fi these days, and faster mobile connections (4G LTE) becoming more and more commonplace, especially in and around cities. But which of these services is the best? All three of the big companies have stepped up their game, meaning that the differences are becoming more and more difficult to see – but don't be fooled, they are still present. In this article, we're presenting our opinion on who wins and who loses this particular battle. Check our review of Google AppsQuick and effectiveFirst off, on the basis of the usability of each service, the three are too close to call. Apple and Microsoft's solutions work fully offline, whereas the same can't be said for Google's, and that is perhaps the one major difference between them all for the everyday user – with the stress on everyday. If you need to write five hundred words quickly or create a slideshow, all three options will work quickly and effectively. The biggest advantage of Apple's solution, iWork, is that it ties in so well with its other apps and services. iCloud provides constant syncing between the OS X and iOS versions of iWork, which includes Pages, Keynote and Numbers. The integration also extends to Apple TV, a device that is becoming more and more popular in both homes and the workplace. "Beaming" slides and the whole screen via AirPlay could set Apple's hardware and software apart, especially when the competition has no comparable service. iCloud's ability to sync between devices means that projects can be started on the go and finished in the office, all without losing a single bullet point. Apple offers a tiered data storage system which boasts up to 200GB of storage for customers at significantly cheaper prices than Dropbox and Google Drive. Apple has also made iWork for iCloud available, and this suite moves Pages, Keynote and Numbers into the cloud, to be worked on and accessed totally via the web browser. (This works on either Windows or OS X devices, of course). Adding this brings Apple in line with Google and Microsoft, but the depth of services offered by Apple is currently not as impressive. http://cdn0.mos.techradar.futurecdn.net//art/TRBC/office_365-420-100.jpg Strength of RedmondAs the behemoth of office applications, Microsoft's software is likely the strongest and will, ultimately, serve you best if you are a normal customer or a business. With the addition of Office 365 last year – and the frequent upgrades to both features and infrastructure – Microsoft has pulled ahead of both Apple and Google's offerings. For a monthly, or yearly fee, Office 365 will enable downloads of Office and a fully-formed cloud suite which syncs between all devices that are logged into your Microsoft account. Google Docs works in a similar way to Office 365 and iWork for iCloud, minus the ability to work offline (unless, as previously mentioned, you use Chrome and can put up with some missing features). That said, this may not be an issue in a city or home anyway, as Wi-Fi or fast mobile connections are generally always available. Check our review of Microsoft Office 365Closely fought battleUltimately, all three companies offer solutions that work well and enable you to produce the content you need, either for personal or business reasons. Unlike in the past, the three companies are becoming increasingly open about who can use their services. Apple's iWork for iCloud works on Windows machines and Office for iPad was recently announced, bringing the option of using a Microsoft product onto an iOS device. The only hitch is that Microsoft doesn't allowing saving in Pages, Keynote or Numbers file formats which can preclude sharing, although the iWork suite is happy to work with Word, PowerPoint and Excel files. If a winner must be decided, then Microsoft comes out on top. The company's almost eternal focus on office applications works in its favour, as Redmond's suite is the most rounded and offers the best features overall, both online and offline. If you're already tied up in the Apple universe, iWork is best, and the same is true if you're heavily invested in Google's ecosystem, if you can handle the offline restrictions in the latter case. http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/3e98f8ce/sc/4/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/204367756310/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/3e98f8ce/sc/4/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/204367756310/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/3e98f8ce/sc/4/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/204367756310/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/3e98f8ce/sc/4/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/204367756310/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/3e98f8ce/sc/4/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/204367756310/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/3e98f8ce/sc/4/a2t.imghttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/1h83DmC1JPw
  4. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/features/Get%20rid%20of%20Google/feature_camera-470-75.jpgBest replacement apps for Android usersAndroid is an operating system built by Google but that doesn't mean that every app you use on your Android handset has to be the creation of those fine folks in California. There's a whole world of faster, sleeker, prettier apps, that don't store all your data just waiting for a download. Here's the complete solution to purging all of Google's in-built apps. MailK-9 Mail is probably the most well known alternative to Google's inbuilt Mail or Gmail apps. Although the interface can feel a little clunky on occasion (namely, every time you open the app up), the range of customisation options is comprehensive, and should let you tweak things to your heart's content. The full range of support for pretty much every mainstream email account is, of course, very welcome. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/features/Get%20rid%20of%20Google/Feature_email-420-90.jpg AquaMail also deserves a mention as the honourable runner-up here. It's a little easier to set up, and also has a more powerful tablet interface, if you prefer to handle your electronic mail on a bigger fondleslab. The paid version is £3.00 (US$4.95, AU$4.95) if you want to unlock all the features, however. SMSA texting app should, in our opinion, be the simplest thing possible – and Hello SMS is about as stripped back as it gets. It claims to be "the first tabbed texting app", and while that's not strictly true, thanks to Google's own Hangouts app, Hello does provide a pretty neat SMS experience. The side tab lets you navigate through conversations, with good touches like adding a flag to show which country an unknown message has come from, or the initials of someone who's actually in your contacts. Messaging is as simple as you'd like it, with threaded conversations just as you'd expect, and a full range of notification customisation options. It even offers and iMessage-style feature (currently in beta), where texts to other hello SMS users are free. CalendarThe replacement that we have used for Google Calendar for a few years now is Agenda, which offers a radically different UI to most calendars. While a month, week or day view is offered, it's the grid-free agenda view (showing your next 10 or so upcoming events) that is most useful. Navigating round the app is simple, once you get the hang of swiping between different views, and even adding events is fairly easy (although multiple calendars could be handled better). The only real downside is the £1.49 (US$1.99, about AU$2.20) asking price. ClockGoogle's Clock app is fairly utilitarian – which, in fairness, is all you really need to get you out of bed in the morning. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/features/Get%20rid%20of%20Google/feature_clock-420-90.jpg If, however, you want to wake up to a design that someone's really put the time and effort into, Timely is a good bet. The simple clock app is better designed than some cathedrals, and once you've got your head around the swipe-based navigation, it's also a fast way to set alarms. Best of all, it won't cost you a single shiny penny. CameraThe main reason to ditch Google's in-built Camera app is the lack of fine manual controls, with The Big G favouring a simplified UI. Camera FV-5 Lite is an excellent free alternative, which puts more advanced controls (exposure, ISO, and metering modes, in particular) onto the viewfinder, as well as a histogram. There's even more under the hood. A good exposure bracketing option can help you make good HDR images, which is often a major help given the small sensors on smartphones. The intervalometer enables timelapse photography, assuming you can bear to part with your smartphone for the duration of an entire sunrise. GalleryQuickPic is everything you want in a photo viewer: super-simple, fast navigation, options that get out of the way quickly when you want to full-screen a photo. It also has integration with all the major cloud services, so that you can pull all your photos into one place. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/features/Get%20rid%20of%20Google/feature_gallery-420-90.jpg The tablet interface is just as good, and best of all, there's support for almost every image format going – including your entire collection of cat GIFs. ChromeChrome's in-built browser is fantastic if you're constantly hopping between desktop and mobile browsing, but its UI isn't the simplest, and there's always the nagging concern about Google recording your worst internet depravities. The most straightforward replacement for Chrome is Dolphin browser, a fast-and-light Android that trades Chrome's frills for some serious performance. There's also a gesture option, that lets you create a gesture to launch the browser from anywhere on your phone. LauncherProbably the most visual change you can make to an Android phone is to strip it of its default launcher (the program that 'makes' the homescreens and app drawer), and replace it with one of the many third-party options that litter the Play Store. The best of the lot is Nova, which offers a ton of features in its free version (and a positively overwhelming smorgasbord in the paid-for edition). You get control over icons, colour schemes, transition animations – pretty much anything, although Nova just about strikes the right balance between simplicity and customisation. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/features/Get%20rid%20of%20Google/feature-nova-420-90.jpg Another standout option, however, is Apex Launcher, which offers nearly the same laundry list of options as Nova. On our test devices, we saw a tiny decrease in performance with Apex over Nova. Although that's arguably balanced out by Apex's superior tablet mode. Either way, both launchers offer a fairly major step up over Google's stock launcher. MapsGoogle's Maps app is hands-down the hardest to replace, because nothing comes close to offering the quality and quantity of mapping info that Google's got on tap. The closest competitior, Apple Maps, is only available on iOS. But if you insist on escaping Eric Schmidt's grasp, MapQuest is probably your best bet. The app itself is surprisingly good, with a simple UI and a good range of options – it's just the mapping data itself that lets it down, with inaccurate and outdated coverage a major problem. At least it's free. Best Android apps: the essential applications you need to download on to your Android device.http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/3e7283aa/sc/4/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/204367596803/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/3e7283aa/sc/4/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/204367596803/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/3e7283aa/sc/4/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/204367596803/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/3e7283aa/sc/4/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/204367596803/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/3e7283aa/sc/4/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/204367596803/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/3e7283aa/sc/4/a2t.imghttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/P1gn_cI1-yw
  5. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/TRBC/Laptops/Samsung/chromebook2/samsungchromebook2-1-470-75.jpgGoogle has made good on one of its Google IO 2014 promises and has ported over the first batch of Android apps to Chromebooks. Now users will be able to download Android apps such as Evernote save notes to the cloud. Duolingo has also been added to the Chrome App Store to help you learn foreign languages. Alternatively, teach children to read with Slight words, or use Vine to produce short vlogs and other video with a Chromebook's built-in webcam. The Google Chrome Team explained these four apps are just the beginning of its Project Runtime project first announced at Google IO. In the coming months users will see more Android apps come to Google's Chrome OS as the company continues working with smartphone software developers. Moving forward the Google Chrome Team also want's to hear what Android app you want to use on Chrome OS and users can submit their ideas here. Setting up shopGoogle Chromebooks have finally hit their stride. This year we saw the first line of cloud-based laptops equipped with more powerful and battery efficient chips like the Intel Core i3 chip inside the Acer C720 as well as the Acer Chromebook 13 rocking Nvidia's Tegra K1 processor. Now that computer manufacturers finally have the hardware locked down it seems like its time for the software to step up its game. In our own adventures reviewing the Dell Chromebook 11 and Acer C720P, we found Google's cloud platform was good for very little beyond using its first party web apps. Although Chrome has its own app store, its filled with adware posing as familiar game titles and there's a lack of powerful image editing apps. These newly added Android apps could help fill out Chrome OS's lack of software. What will be more interesting to see if apps catch on and it ends up taking over Chrome OS when Google originally set out to create platform of affordable laptops powered by the web. Here's the top 5 Chromebooks out there todayhttp://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/3e60afba/sc/28/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/206157696932/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/3e60afba/sc/28/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/206157696932/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/3e60afba/sc/28/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/206157696932/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/3e60afba/sc/28/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/206157696932/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/3e60afba/sc/28/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/206157696932/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/3e60afba/sc/28/a2t.imghttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/IG-w_fMYtIM
  6. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/Watches/Motorola/Moto%20360/Review/moto-360-google-now-470-75.jpgAs promised Google is supporting its burgeoning Android Wear smartwatch platform with more updates. The search company announced the first update will bring offline GPS support and offline music playback to wearables running its smartwatch OS. Firstly smartwatches with built-in GPS sensors such as Sony's SmartWatch 3 will track your distance and speed when you go on a run. There's no official word whether GPS support include turn-by-turn direction or display a map that tracks your position, but it seems like one of the obvious uses for smartwatches. The first update will come in the next few months and it will also bring offline music playback letting users wireless stream songs stored on their smartwatch to a pair of Bluetooth headphones. Google imagines both these new features will be useful for users who want to leave their smartphone during a run or bike ride. After all, no one likes having a mobile device jumping around their pocket during a workout. Once users come back home the watch will re-sync, transferring your all your updated stats. What face is it?The second update Google has lined up will bring downloadable watch faces. These new designs won't just include different analog and digital clock faces, users will also be able to customize their watch's home screen with widgets like their calendar and fitness data. Soon enough users will also be able to download new developer-created watch faces from the Google Play store. Lastly Google promises it's working with manufacturers to create even more watch options on top of the dozen or so it helped introduce at IFA 2014. Supposedly these new wearables will feature different shapes, styles and sensors. 7. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/other/Onetimers/D-Wave%202-470-75.jpgGoogle is a curious web search company with it's hand in everything from Android Wear smartwatches, robots and now quantum computing. Hartmut Neven, director of engineering from Google's Quantum Artificial Intelligence team, announced it is launching a hardware initiative to build new quantum computing processors using superconductors. As part of the new hardware initiative Google will be teaming up with John Martinis and a team of other UC Santa Barbara researchers. Together the two research groups will seek out to create new designs for better-optimized quantum computer and inference processors. The Quantum AI team also noted that Google will take big lessons from its continued collaboration with D-Wave. D-Wave has arguably been the poster child of quantum computing thus far, championing the new architecture despite its recent flop in a race with a regular PC. Fringe techOne the big perks of quantum computing is it can complete complex tasks much faster and efficiently than a regular PC. It's unlikely Google is researching quantum computing chips to launch its own line of PCs or become a competitor with Intel and AMD. For one thing the technology is still prohibitively expensive and experimental for it to exist anywhere else but a test lab for now - After all the quantum processor still needs to be kept at cryogenic temperatures with liquid nitrogen. Rather, quantum computing so far has proven to be more useful for things such voice recognition in Google Now and, potentially, artificial intelligence. Now that Google is getting involved this could be quantum computing's best bet for a real world application any time soon. Speaking of voice recognition have you met Siri or Cortana?http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/3e1ddfe5/sc/28/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/204367242764/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/3e1ddfe5/sc/28/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/204367242764/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/3e1ddfe5/sc/28/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/204367242764/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/3e1ddfe5/sc/28/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/204367242764/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/3e1ddfe5/sc/28/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/204367242764/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/3e1ddfe5/sc/28/a2t.imghttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/GbbNTJ35iiI
  8. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/other/Onetimers/google-android-wear-google-now-470-75.jpgGoogle has promised that it will release frequent updates to Android Wear, the smartwatch OS being adopted by companies like Asus, Samsung, Motorola, LG, and others. Smartwatches will change much more rapidly than smartphones, the company said, and Google wants to stay at the forefront and actively shape how Android Wear evolves, according to CNET. And unlike in smartphones, Google can reportedly push out Android Wear updates without having to run them by carriers first, a step that makes the smartphone update process take longer than it otherwise would. Google reportedly has several Android Wear updates scheduled to arrive before the end of the year, with the first coming this week. Future watchThese Android Wear updates will add features like the ability to pair smartwatches with Bluetooth headsets and the ability for smartwatches that have GPS to use geolocation to track users' fitness sessions. Google also plans to add a streamlined way for third-party developers to design their own Android Wear watch faces that users will be able to swap in and out on a whim - to display live sports game scores, stocks or other specific data. Google's Android Wear Engineering Director David Singleton told CNET that thousands of existing Android apps have already been updated to support Android Wear. He added that Google will enable other connection types besides Bluetooth as its Android Wear hardware partners start expressing the desire to build watches that use them. 9. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/other/Google/Project%20Glass/Pandora%20for%20Glass-470-75.jpgSay what you will about Google Glass, but it continues to rack up third-party support. Pandora is the latest to throw its hat in the Glass ring. Hatched at a recent company Hack-a-thon (we're getting a lot of those lately), Pandora for Glass arrives today. Taking advantage of Glass's hands-free controls, Pandora for Glass can get Explorers into their favorite stations via voice controls. But voice controls aren't limited to accessing existing stations; users can also create new ones using just their vocal cords. The touchpad offers more advanced functions, not only letting users jump into their stations but also granting them thumb-ups and thumb-downs powers as well as pause, skip and stop. Listening options include the built-in speaker plus bone conduction method, the mono earbud included in the Explorer kit or a double earbud accessory. To get Pandora for Glass, Google Glass owners can head to google.com/myglass, sniff out Pandora, turn it ON on the detail page (sign-in required), and give the requisite basic info approval. From there, Pandora will arrive over the air and you can start streaming to your ears' content. http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/3dea902c/sc/15/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/204366972472/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/3dea902c/sc/15/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/204366972472/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/3dea902c/sc/15/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/204366972472/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/3dea902c/sc/15/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/204366972472/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/3dea902c/sc/15/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/204366972472/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/3dea902c/sc/15/a2t.imghttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/loofRmPOa_w

Now iOS users can get in on the spherical photo wordplay, too. Google has released a Photo Sphere app for iPhone 5, iPhone 5S and iPads running iOS 7 and up, marking the first time the feature has been available outside of the Android ecosystem. The app creates panoramas that stitch together multiple photos spanning not just a 360-degree horizon, but also "up, down and all around," as the app's official description says. A simple custom interface guides users in taking perfect panoramas, ensuring the software will be able to effectively combine all the images. Why ever leave the house?Photo Sphere previously worked only on devices running Android 4.2 or higher, or with panoramas snapped using fancy DSLR cameras. But the app also lets users share their photo spheres over Twitter, Facebook, Google+, and email, or add them directly to Google Maps, where anyone can view them. Photo Sphere creators have been using that Google Maps compatibility to create virtual tours of businesses, landmarks and other locations since 2013. And best of all? The under-the-radar Field Trip app, which launched back in 2012, is a product of Google's Niantic labs and notifies smartphone users of local points of interest. Its raison d'être is to showcase cool, hidden places whenever you're in the vicinity. Field Trip runs in the background and sends users a card-based notification with information on interesting spots. Now those cards, which can include everything from historical sites to interesting architecture to the best places to shop, have been added to the Google Now experience. Travel aid"When you're traveling, you can always use a little extra help to learn more about a cool landmark, or to make sure you don't miss the most interesting local architecture or public art," Google said in the announcement. "The Field Trip app from Google's Niantic Labs was designed to allow people to discover the hidden and unique locations in the world around them - and now, when you're traveling you'll start seeing information from Field Trip in Google Now." Altogether, more than 600 million users are expected to be protected by enterprise-grade, end-to-end, encryption capabilities. The plan was announced at the Black Hat security conference by the company's Chief Information Officer, Alex Stamos, a post that didn't existed a year ago at Yahoo. Encryption will not be enabled by default though and users will have to turn it on themselves in order to be fully protected. Both Google and Yahoo will be using a variant of PGP, where encryption keys are stored on the devices themselves rather than centrally kept by a third party. PGP however won't solve the privacy conundrum across the email journey. It cannot, for example, encrypt the subject line or the identity of the recipient. In addition, unless you proceed use an incognito or private window, there's always a chance of being able to piece together enough information to access the user's account. 13. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/other/Onetimers/iphone-email-470-75.jpgHaving to hunt around in chain letters and spam emails for an "unsubscribe" button is a pain, which is why Google has added a new easy unsubscribe button to Gmail messages. Gmail parses through an email for an unsubscribe link, and if it finds one displays it next to the sender's address at the top. Clicking the unsubscribe link at the top takes you to the same place, but you don't have scroll through another email full of Target ads or "HOT DEALS WONT LAST!!!!!" first. "If you're interested in the message's content, it won't get in the way, and if not, it'll make it easier to keep your inbox clutter-free," Google wrote on the Gmail Google+ page. So don't delay, act nowAs nice as this addition is, it won't help when it comes to legitimate spam that doesn't feature an unsubscribe link at all. In addition it only applies to messages that are categorized as Promotions, Social or Forums messages. But Google's right in that it does make the Gmail experience just a little bit easier all around. "Making the unsubscribe option easy to find is a win for everyone," Google wrote. "For email senders, their mail is less likely to be marked as spam and for you, you can now say goodbye to sifting through an entire message for that one pesky link." Upgrading the browser's bit count has made it faster and more secure, according to Google. The 64-bit Chrome for Windows build first arrived in preview builds for developers in June, and this is the first time the general public has had access to a steady build. The beta is available now from Google's official Chrome releases page. Max beta"The new version replaces the existing version while preserving all your settings and bookmarks, so there's no need to uninstall a current installation of Chrome," Google's release blog promises. However it's important to remember that as a beta version of Chrome, this 64-bit release is likely far from stable. If you do encounter any bugs you can let Google know on this Chromium code page. In the meantime the less adventurous out there might want to wait for a full, official release of Google's 64-bit Chrome for Windows, which is more than likely right around the corner. 15. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/internet/hearbleedkeyboard-470-75.jpgGoogle has a number of going pet projects from internet-providing hot air balloons to driverless cars, and now the next thing on its agenda is net security. The search company announced it has put together a crack team of security engineers to help secure the web in a mission it has called Project Zero. On the company's online security blog, Google explained the team will crackdown on "zero day" vulnerabilities, otherwise known as security loopholes inside services and software that hackers can easily exploit. One the of the world's most famous and relatively recent zero day vulnerabilities was the Heartbleed bug. Ultimately Google does not want another leave another widespread vulnerability unchecked to affect the entire web world. Worldwide web watchdogs Project Zero won't just look out for flaws in Google's websites, services, or Android but the entire web. If the Project Zero crew discovers a vulnerability it promises to contact outside companies and organizations as well as working with them to get fixes to users quickly. "We're not placing any particular bounds on this project and will work to improve the security of any software depended upon by large numbers of people," Chris Evans, head of Chrome security at Google, said in a release. For an extra element of transparency, Google also plans to document every bug it discovers in a public database once it's fixed. Concerned web browsers can view this bug report to see how long it took programmers to correct the exploit, discussions on the problem, and other information making it essentially the Wikipedia of web vulnerabilities. Google is also looking to hire security researchers who want to join the fight. It's a headstrong effort by Google to take on the role of web security watchdog that should benefit everyone in the end. Now the question is how many companies will be comfortable working with internet giant prodding around with their security protocols. In a blog post, he wrote: "I present Rosetta Flash, a tool for converting any SWF file to one composed of only alphanumeric characters in order to abuse JSONP endpoints, making a victim perform arbitrary requests to the domain with the vulnerable endpoint and exfiltrate potentially sensitive data, not limited to JSONP responses, to an attacker-controlled site". 17. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/Watches/Motorola/Moto%20360/moto-360-watch-face-470-75.jpgIt seems everyone has had an unfortunate run-in with digital rights management (DRM) at one time or another, and now Android Wear users are having theirs. Early adopters of Google's smartwatch standard have found that paid apps simply don't work on Android Wear devices, according to Ars Technica. Currently there are no standalone apps for Android Wear devices; apps with Wear features need to be downloaded to an Android phone, which then sends the relevant part of the app to the smartwatch using Bluetooth. But apparently the encryption keys that get sent to your phone when you download a paid app from the Google Play store don't make it over to the smartwatch. A strange oversightThat means Android Wear devices that receive app data from smartphones have no way to decrypt that data unless the app was free to begin with. So one solution is for developers to make their Android Wear-compatible apps free, though obviously that's not ideal. It's definitely still early in the saga of Android Wear, but this is a strange oversight that should definitely have been caught before now. We've asked Google to comment on when the bug might be fixed, and we'll update here if we hear back. There's no need to download it either. The services update comes through the Google Play Store to almost all smartphones and tablets running Android 2.3 Gingerbread to 4.4 KitKat. Google Service 5.0 brings with it API designed to make it easier for users to communicate with apps running on Android Wear devices. In a developer update Google wrote that the 5.0 update allows apps to sync data, exchange control messages, and transfer data between wearables and compatible phones. Matchmaker, make me a matchThe Android Wear specific updates will only work with devices. What's more smartwatches and activity trackers running Google's wearable OS will only work with certain handsets. To help users make sense of whether devices can pair properly, the Mountain View company launched an Android Wear Check website. The online tool allows users to check the compatibility of their smartphone before trying to find a match. Everything elseAside from all the Android Wear specific tools, the updates services also adds a dynamic security provider allowing developers to rapidly deliver security patches. A necessity in today's world when it seems like some other app has been breached every week. A tweak to Google Wallet adds the option to save offers or deals to their wallet. At registers and online carts users can now pay for goods with both their Google Wallet Balance and linked credit or debit cards in case they don't have enough virtual currency in the bank to make the purchase. The virtual wallet will also know when users have walked into a store by tracking their location data to automatically pull up loyalty cards and offers. Google hopes this will save the user the hassle of digging and carrying around the items physically when they can simply scan codes from their phones. On the developer side app makers will be happy to hear Google has improved analytics capabilities for ecommerce sites. The updated tools include new ways to measure marketing and merchandising strategies, and search for the app like a webpage with an updated indexing API. 19. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/mobile_phones/Apps/Songza-470-75.jpgGoogle has confirmed the acquisition of mobile music streaming app Songza and has announced plans to integrate it within YouTube and other Google music products. The Songza app users powerful curation algorithms and DJ-created playlists in order to pull together radio stations based on the weather, moods, the time of day, activities and more. Now it is in the hands of Google, although the terms of the deal remain undisclosed. In its announcement the Google said it'd be built into its Play Music service, but also hinted Songza may have a place within the forthcoming YouTube music subscription service. No immediate changes"Exciting news today - we're thrilled to welcome Songza to Google," the firm wrote. "They've built a great service which uses contextual expert-curated playlists to give you the right music at the right time. We aren't planning any immediate changes to Songza, so it will continue to work like usual for existing users. Over the coming months, we'll explore ways to bring what you love about Songza to Google Play Music. "We'll also look for opportunities to bring their great work to the music experience on YouTube and other Google products." The takeover was originally rumoured last month by the New York Post, with the pager suggested a somewhat low price of $15m (around £9m, AU$16m). The deal comes after Apple splashed out $3 billion (around £1.75, AU$3.1) on Beats, but it's rather unlikely Google forked over anywhere close to that. 20. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/other/Onetimers/android-wear-moto-360-close-up-470-75.jpgGoogle has confirmed that manufacturers will not be able to alter the user interface for devices running its three new Android operating systems. Following the launch of Android Wear, Android TV and the in-car Android Auto platform at Google I/O there was doubt over whether OEMs would have the freedom to overlay their own custom takes on the Android. Google engineering director David Burke says the firm wants a more consistent approach across these devices, claiming that UI is more important to the actual product than, say, it is to Android for phones or tablets. He told Ars Technica: "The UI is more part of the product in this case. We want to just have a very consistent user experience, so if you have one TV in one room and another TV in another room and they both say Android TV, we want them to work the same and look the same." 'It should be the same'Burke added that manufacturers like HTC, Samsung, LG and Motorola will have the freedom to add their own services and apps into the mix, but that's as far as it'll go. He said: "The device manufacturers can brand it, and they might have services that they want to include with it, but otherwise it should be the same." The decision explains why the Samsung Gear Live, the LG G Watch and Moto 360 smartwatches all look so similar on the software side of things. Late last week, Samsung itself said it would be looking to add its multitude of services, some from its Galaxy smartphones and others from its Gear watches into the mix. Do you think Google has made the right call in keeping the new versions of Android pure? Or is it another sign of Google walling off the open source garden? Let us know your thoughts below. 21. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/mobile_phones/Motorola/Ara/Ara-Press-01-470-75.jpgGoogle has announced many, many things already at its developer conference and the search company still has projects left over on the docket including Project Ara. SlashGear reports Google has challenged developers to come up with a smartphone module that does not exist in today's preassembled devices. Hair brained ideas are welcome but the Mountain View is looking for new, never before seen parts that plug and play with its modular phone of the future. On top of bragging rights, the first to engineer a working module will get $100K (about £58,732/AU$106,216) as the grand prize. There's also room for two runner ups who will win shoo-in invites to the next Ara developer event currently on track for this fall. Google's magic phone factoryDon't think Google is just going to crowd source the development of Project Ara going forward. While the developers work on their add-ons Google announced it's figuring out a new, super-speed 3D printer production system to spit out customized modules. Google touts its personal 3D printer is 50x faster than a traditional 3D printer. Like an advanced copy machine, this printer can fabricate three-dimensional parts made of multiple types of materials. To finish off the modules machine also prints 600-dpi color images applying them like a vinyl onto the modular parts. Next generation phonesWhile the printer can already produce parts, Google is looking into how to pack even more components into its platform modules. In another research project the company is looking to create longer lasting battery packs that can extend the operational time of our devices by up to three times. In the future search company expects that it eventually be able to create electrical elements such as the antennas using 3D printing. To support all this modular magic Google plans to release a prototype version of Android this fall - which could ultimately mean developer devices by next season, hopefully. The Google Search 3.5.14 for Android update, allows users to summon the 'hotword' command from anywhere on their phone and tablet, even when the device is locked. Users can turn on the enhanced hotword detection by heading to Menu > Settings> Voice and toggling the settings. Early reports claim the new system wide integration, first rumoured in April this year, works well in testing. Audio HistoryAlso coming to the new Google Search app, which some users are already seeing, is a new Audio History tool to boost voice searches. The feature learns the sound of your voice and your pronunciation habits in order to yield more accurate search results. Enter Google Fit, a new platform to "help users keep better track of fitness goals" announced during the IO keynote Wednesday. The platform relies on a single set of APIs "to manage data on apps and sensors" coming in from various devices, including wearables. Partners like Nike+, Adidas and RunKeeper will utilize the Google Fit platform to keep people on track of their fitness goals. Google is opening the platform to developers so they can incorporate Fit into their fitness-app routine. The SDK will go live in a few weeks' time. Google Fit's announcement comes a few weeks after Apple announced HealthKit for iOS 8. HealthKit works in much the same fashion: gather data from various health and fitness sources (in Apple's case, mostly apps), and translate that info into digestible data snacks for consumers. Which tech titan's fitness platform reigns supreme? Since neither is available to the public yet, it's hard to say. 24. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/features/Best%20Browser%202014/chromestore-470-75.jpgDownloading a web browser used to be an easy decision. First, Internet Explorer defeated Netscape. Then Firefox proved a better choice than Internet Explorer. Google Chrome offered a third option - faster, neater, with a more minimalist approach. Now, the browser you use often comes down to personal preference or to the operating system that runs on your computer. The latest versions of Internet Explorer, Firefox and Google Chrome are all fast. But Firefox and Chrome enjoy greater expandability, capable of installing add-ons and extensions respectively. These two browsers also leave Internet Explorer in the dust when it comes to synchronising data and browsing sessions between different devices. Security consciousFirefox and Google Chrome are also neck and neck when it comes to privacy and feature private browsing modes that won't leave sensitive data in your web history. They also give you access to various protective plugins, including HTTPS Everywhere and Disconnect, which enables you to block websites that attempt to track your Internet browsing. In a straight-up fight between Firefox and Chrome, Google's web browser nudges ahead with superior HTML5 performance and sandboxed tabs for extra stability. So if one tab crashes on you, it doesn't take down the whole browser. We have a winner. But only just. 25. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/car%20tech/Apple%20CarPlay/16x9/CarPlay%20maps-470-75.jpgGoogle is about to catch a ride in your car with a new dashboard OS tentatively called Google Auto Link, according to one report. The system will rival Apple CarPlay and debut at the Google IO developer conference on June 25, three separate sources told Auto News. Google Auto Link is reportedly "projected" from Android smartphones, not "embedded" in cars themselves, so users will control their phones from their dashboards. Like CarPlay, the Google system will likely let users play music, answer calls, navigate, and do more without needing to take their eyes from the road for too long. Safety firstGoogle Auto Link, which may ultimately emerge with a different name, is no doubt a product of Google's Open Automotive Alliance, announced earlier this year. The alliance includes Audi, General Motors, Honda., Hyundai, and even Nvidia, which is making chips for in-car systems. Audi has already begun embedding Google Earth in its vehicles, and some Hyundai cars let users search for destinations with voice commands, but Android has yet to be fully integrated with any cars. Google said previously, though, that it wants to get Android into cars in 2014, and that it's "developing new Android platform features that will enable the car itself to become a connected Android device." Watch out for more news about Google's in-car efforts as IO approaches in the next week.
