  1. First announced at 2017’s Paris Games Week, Ghost of Tsushima is a brand new IP from Sucker Punch which will be exclusive to PlayStation 4. Though Sucker Punch is largely known for the inFamous games, the developer is departing quite significantly from the inFamous formula with this new game. Saying so-long to high-rise cities and neon superpowers, Ghost of Tsushima will be a historical open world adventure that will take players back to Feudal Japan. Sound like your kind of thing? This is everything we know about the game so far. Cut to the chaseWhat is it? A brand new PlayStation exclusive IP from Sucker Punch When can I play it? No release window just yet What can I play it on? PS4 Ghost of Tsushima release dateThough we know development of Ghost of Tsushima is well underway and we’ve seen some gameplay footage, there’s not been any inkling of a release date just yet - but late 2019 looks likely. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/r4LqGRb2BDn5QuhhNAn2Dn.jpg Ghost of Tsushima trailersPlayStation showed us more of Ghost of Tsushima than ever during its E3 2018 conference with a brand new lengthy gameplay debut. The trailer shows a huge open world that almost looks like a painting with a soaring atmospheric soundtrack. We see our samurai challenge Mongol invaders in a combat style that reminded us of Assassin's Creed. But as well as up front and outright combat, there will be an emphasis on stealth with players using the element of surprise to avoid being outnumbered. Check out the gameplay debut trailer below: Before this we saw the announcement trailer that was released at Paris Games Week. Though it was captured in the game engine, it doesn’t feature much in terms of gameplay. What it does show, however, is the game world we’ll be playing in and it’s clear that Sucker Punch is aiming for a stunning aesthetic. You can watch it for yourself below: Though it doesn't focus on in-game footage or gameplay, there was also an enlightening panel held at PSX with several members of the game's development team. Watch below for details on the above trailer and what kind of research has gone into it. News and featuresThe main character is Jin Sakai - but he's not alone Ghost of Tsushima focuses on samurai Jin Sakai but you will also gather allies such as archer Masako (who was you might remember from the trailer). It’ll be set in Feudal Japan As revealed by the game’s announcement trailer, Ghost of Tsushima will be set in 13th century Japan - the time of the Mongol invasions. In the year 1274, the Mongols made their first stop on the island of Tsushima. You'll play Jin, one of the last of the samurai on the devastated island, determined to quash the invasion and push the Mongols out despite the odds being stacked against him. The game's art director, Jason Connell, stated in a recent PSX panel for the game that the team are taking an "inspired by" approach to the game with the setting serving as a "jumping off point" for a completely original story. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/Uj4Lksynqw4MyYPaAhrWK8.jpg There will be an open world and you’ll play in the third-person Though it’s very different from Sucker Punch’s previous games in many ways, Ghost of Tsushima will bear one similarity to inFamous with its third-person perspective; this time players will take up the role of a samurai called Jin. The game will have a huge open world. Specifically, the setting will be the large island of Tsushima, located off the coast of Japan. Tsushima is a geographically diverse place and the game’s trailer shows that players will be able to travel from lush forests, to rugged mountains and towns filled with interesting characters. Judging by trailer footage it looks likely that the player will do the majority of terrain traversal on horseback. Gameplay We’ve seen very little of gameplay thus far, but given the setting and overarching storyline it has the potential to be interesting. Playing a samurai unsurprisingly means there will be both action and stealth elements but there seem to be some plans to mix up the formula. The samurai the player will take control of, for example, is the one of the last of his kind and as a result he’s forced to shed traditional samurai tactics and form a new method of fighting call the ‘Way of the Ghost’. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/L7DL2bFP58efCsuLLXGY8H.jpg While we don’t know what this Way of the Ghost actually involves, we're interested because it’s an entirely new method of fighting necessitated by there being only one samurai facing an entire army. All of this together makes us think there will be a heavy emphasis on tactical stealth and the use of enhanced (perhaps mildly supernatural) powers. According to the game's listing on the New Zealand PlayStation Store, players will be building the legend of 'the Ghost' in a tale "inspired by classic samurai stories." There will be a range of weapons Naturally weapons will be key in this game and from the trailer we can see that there will be a wide range of them. Alongside the traditional samurai katana, we also glimpsed long bows, armored horses and plenty of fire. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/x7opG7qkhYxyE9LDVRu33R.jpg The villain will be interesting Alongside an intriguing protagonist, we’re also anticipating a villain of substance. The player will be facing the Mongol Empire, known for its advanced horseback and archery skills as well as its ferocity. The leader of this army will be the player’s main enemy and Sucker Punch has described this leader as being an “uncomfortably reasonable killer.” How this will manifest itself in the game is unclear but it suggests an engaging story line and hero/villain dynamic. We're expecting to hear more about Ghost of Tsushima at this year's PlayStation Experience taking place in early December. Keep checking back here for more updates! It could use Japanese dialogue During a at PSX, the game's creative director Nate Fox asked the audience if they'd be interested in playing the game with Japanese dialogue. After applause that couldn't be mistaken for anything other than affirmation, he stated "Noted, thank you."While this isn't a confirmation of anything, it does suggest that Ghost of Tsushima could very well go down the route of games such as Nier: Automata with dialogue entirely in Japanese alongside English subtitles. It would certainly compliment the efforts the development team has clearly gone to in going on research trips and asking for expert advice to achieve cultural authenticity. Will Ghost of Tsushima make it onto our list of the best PS4 games?http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/digital-home/~4/_AGg4iDgBk8
  2. Angela Ahrendts, the head of Apple’s retail stores, is to leave the company in April after five years in the role. The former Burberry CEO was appointed in 2014, tasked with overhauling Apple’s retail presence ahead of the launch of the Apple Watch. Her experience in the world of fashion was seen as desirable as Apple expanded into a new category of device, while it was suggested that CEO Tim Cook wanted to increase sales through the company’s direct channels. Angela Ahrendts AppleBut despite this focus on sales, Ahrendts is widely credited with turning the portfolio of more than 500 stores worldwide into destinations rather than just places to promote and sell products. This will be even more crucial going forward as Apple has identified customer financing and recycling programmes as key methods of encouraging device upgrades. Ahrendts departure has been attributed for a desire for “new personal and professional pursuits” and she will be replaced by Deirdre O’Brien, whose role has been expanded to senior vice president of Retail + People. “I want to thank Angela for inspiring and energizing our teams over the past five years,” declared Cook. “She has been a positive, transformative force, both for Apple’s stores and the communities they serve. We all wish her the very best as she begins a new chapter.” iPhone XS reviewWhy is Apple selling fewer iPhones? What is 5G? “The last five years have been the most stimulating, challenging and fulfilling of my career. Through the teams’ collective efforts, Retail has never been stronger or better positioned to make an even greater contribution for Apple,” added Ahrendts. “I feel there is no better time to pass the baton to Deirdre, one of Apple’s strongest executives. I look forward to watching how this amazing team, under her leadership, will continue to change the world one person and one community at a time.” The expansion of O’Brien’s role comes at a time when iPhone sales are struggling. iPhone revenue is down 15 per cent year-on-year to $51.9 billion thanks to lower-than-expected sales over the usually buoyant Christmas period. This has been attributed to market saturation, expensive flagship devices and a battery replacement programme that extends the life of devices. 4. Images claiming to show the Samsung Galaxy S10e have leaked, giving us a clearer picture of the handset also known as the Galaxy S10 Lite. The device is to be a cheaper alternative to the flagship Galaxy S10, in the same way the iPhone XR is to the iPhone XS. According to press images found by WinFuture, the device will vary in many ways from the bigger flagship. Read what we thought about the Samsung Galaxy S9 Everything we know about the Samsung Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+Many new phones will be announced at MWC 2019However one feature it appears to share with the rumored S10 and S10 Plus is a side-mounted fingerprint scanner. There’s no sign of a digit reader on the front or rear of these S10e renders, and it’s unlikely Samsung will omit the technology altogether. This will increase ease of accessing the phone and will free up space below the screen, although the display is said to be smaller than the Galaxy S10 with current predictions pegging it at 5.8 inches. In addition the S10e is to have only a dual-lens camera, instead of a tri-lens camera that the S10 and S10+ will have. Like its larger siblings the S10e will not have a notch, with a front camera surrounded by screen instead and it appears to also have a headphone jack on the the bottom. Again, the leaked images here suggest this is true, with rear shots of the device showing only two lenses, a ‘punch-hole’ camera and a headphone jack. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/KgpEReZ7jFkVdWBfPHVoS8.jpg The front and back of the Samsung Galaxy S10. Note the headphone jack and dual cameras on the rear. Image credit: WinFuture. Specifications of the Samsung Galaxy S10ePrevious leaks have given us information as to the specifications and pricing of the Samsung Galaxy S10e, with it tipped to pack a 3100mAh battery, slightly behind the 3400mAh and 4100mAh batteries of the S10 and S10+ respectively. There is said to be only one size option for the model, with 6GB RAM and 128GB internal memory. Suggested prices for the device starts at €749 (about US$850, £660, AU$1200). As with all leaks surrounding phones the information isn’t confirmed, however it provides information in keeping with other leaks about the device. We’ll definitely find out more about the Galaxy S10 phones at Samsung’s launch event on February 20, just days before the MWC 2019 event in Barcelona. We’ll be reporting live on the event announcements as they happen. Here's how the Galaxy S10 could be as powerful as your desktophttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/N0qqT1L4NeM
  5. The rumored Oculus Rift S virtual reality (VR) headset reportedly has rather minor upgrades in the works so far, further affirming rumors that the device will not focus on visual experience upgrades but rather quality-of-life improvements. UploadVR reports to have found evidence of this within the Oculus PC app’s user interface code, first quoting references to a setting that would allow the user to choose between 50Hz and 60Hz room lighting as well as automated function for this setting. Described as “lighting frequency for Rift S cameras to adjust to room lighting,” this suggests that the Oculus Rift S will handle its own positional tracking via built-in cameras much like the Oculus Go of 2018. Oculus Rift vs HTC Vive: which VR platform is best? Our first look at Rift S’s competition: HTC Vive CosmosOculus Rift vs Oculus Go: which is right for you?UploadVR goes on to detail that this new headset will likely remove the physical dial that adjusts inter-pupillary distance, or the space between the centers of your eyes, in lieu of a software control. Without this physical lever, the headset would have to either include a motor or adjust the pixels on the screen to match the unique distance between each users' eyes. It’s unknown both to this outlet and to us why Facebook and Oculus would make such a change when the upcoming Oculus Quest standalone headset maintains the feature. Of course, Oculus and Facebook declined to comment on the matter. These new details help affirm earlier rumors that the Oculus Rift 2 that was supposed to be the company's true next phase in PC-based VR is cancelled. They also lend credence to the reports that Oculus co-founder Brendan Iribe left parent company Facebook over the rumored cancellation of his Rift 2 project in favor of this smaller revision. For this Oculus Rift S, the adoption of internal positioning cameras would be a major quality-of-life improvement for existing fans and far less intimidating to new users. However, we would adjust our expectations for a knock-out VR experience if and when Oculus Rift S sees the light of day. 6. At this point, it almost seems certain that the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti is real, especially when this rumored graphics card has just appeared both on retail and within testing software code. Four different versions of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti have appeared on four different Russian retail sites, including DNS Shop, Mitcor, Nix and Albasoft. These newly listed GTX 1660 Ti cards include the usual suspects with Gaming X and Armor models from MSI as well as Palit Storm X and Storm X OC variants. Everything we know about AMD Radeon VII so farAre even more Nvidia Turing graphics cards coming? How until Intel graphics cards are here?Going by these purported product pages, we can also suss out some of the GTX 1660 Ti’s specs. It seems that this GPU will indeed feature 6GB of GDDR6 memory, but potentially clocked at a slightly slower 12Gbps memory clock. The reference speeds of the GTX 1660 Ti also seem to sit between 1,500MHz and 1,770MHz. Lastly, the graphics card is supposedly listed to include 1,536 CUDA cores and 96 texture units. Unfortunately, none of these sites seem to have included pricing, but previous reports have suggested this card will retail for $279 (about £215, AU$395). http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/yunGXgUZWbP3X9VqfVPXLf.jpg Image Credit: Comparatively, the Nvidia GTX 1060 featured 1,280 CUDA cores, 80 texture units, a 1,506MHz base clock and a 1,708 boost clock. The Nvidia RTX 2060, on the other hand, packs in 1,920 CUDA cores, 120 texture units, a 1,365MHz base clock and a 1,680MHz boost clock. We can debate the reliability of these Russian sites all day but, alongside these retail listings, Nvidia GTX 1660 Ti's existence seems almost certain, thanks to AIDA64 Extreme’s latest beta. According to the software notes, this version “adds GPU information for nVIDIA TU116,” which happens to be the supposed underlying GPU name for Nvidia’s rumored 16-series GTX cards. With how rapidly these leaks are coming out, we must be getting close to the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti’s official reveal. Only time (and Nvidia) can tell if these reports are correct. 7. Social media giant Facebook is reportedly building a unified messaging for business feature that will allow companies to access and manage Instagram Direct messages alongside Facebook Messenger messages. Last month, The New York Times reported that the company was planning to unite the back-end technology running Instagram, Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp on the consumer side. Now though, it appears that Facebook is also building a tool to do the exact same thing with its apps for business. The company's new feature will add Instagram Direct messaging to the messaging inbox inside the Facebook Pages Manager app on both desktop and mobile. Currently the tool only allows businesses to receive and interact with messages from Facebook Messenger. How to unblock Facebook with a VPNWhat does Facebook know about you?Facebook launches new blockchain teamEnd users will be unable to see the difference between a message sent on Instagram and one sent on Facebook Messenger as the function would exist only on the front-end for business page mangers. Business messagingFacebook's decision to unite the backed of its three messaging services has the potential to shake up the business messaging space as the company looks to gain a foothold in the growing market. As users spend more time with its messaging apps, this could help grow its advertising business and while there there are currently no monetization plans for its combined messaging experience, the idea has been discussed by the company. Facebook's messaging tools are used as a B2B communication platform between vendors and consumers with 150m people using Instagram to talk with businesses and 10bn messages sent between consumers and businesses every month on Facebook Messenger. As of now, the company has yet to announce anything regarding the possibility of combining Instagram and Facebook Messenger into a unified messaging service but if the rumors are true, we could likely hear an announcement soon. 8. Hold on to your lightsabers: there's a new Star Wars game in development, and it's called Jedi: Fallen Order. The reveal came in a surprisingly low-key fashion during EA's conference at E3 2018, during an off-the-cuff interview with Vince Zambella, co-founder of Respawn Entertainment (of Titanfall fame). EA said it 'made mistakes' with Star Wars Battlefront 2While fans of the galactic franchise have seen official tie-ins in the form of Star Wars Battlefront I and II, the new entry seems to be taking a different tack, possibly focusing on a single-player experience more in line with 2008's The Force Unleashed – but we have all the concrete news and wild speculation you could want below. [Update: EA has revealed Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order will release in Fall 2019.] Cut to the chaseWhat is it? A new single-player Star Wars game from the creators of TitanfallWhat can I play it on? It's all but certain we'll see it on PS4, Xbox One, and PCWhen can I play it? Autumn/Fall 2019Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order release dateEA has confirmed Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order will release in Fall 2019 (so between mid September and December), just in time for Christmas. Star Wars Battlefront I and II were both released on November 17, in 2015 and 2017 respectively, so it's likely Fallen Order will fall on the same date (or in November anyway). Given the two-year windows between each game, though, this may mean a third Battlefront game is a long way off. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/HsAugisBh47Vq7huNUuQ67.jpg Star Wars: Battlefront II (2017) Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order trailersAt the time of writing, there's no trailer, or even any concept art to go on. When there is one, it's likely to be at EA's official Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order webpage – but feel free to stare at the site and drool in the meantime. There is, however, this video from EA on its future Star Wars titles: Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order news and rumorsStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Order release window "In addition to Apex Legends, another team at Respawn is set to deliver Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order this fall," EA CEO Andrew Wilson revealed during a quarterly earnings call (via Seeking Alpha). "This game's development is led by the former director of the God of War series, with a team of veterans from some of the industry's biggest action-adventure games. Development is well underway "It’s very far along in development, and having spent time with it recently myself, it plays spectacularly well," EA CEO Andrew Wilson revealed during a quarterly earnings call (via Seeking Alpha). "This game truly captures the fantasy of becoming a Jedi, and we will have a lot more to share soon." We will start seeing more soon "You'll start to see in the next few months glimpses of the Star Wars game and I think you'll be blown away by what you see," said EA CFO Blake Jorgensen during a quarterly earnings call (via Seeking Alpha). "We've played 20 plus minutes of it last week and it is exceptional in terms of its like level of polish depth and what living inside of the Star Wars world is a Jedi and I think people will be blown away by." A Padawan called Cal? According to rumored information from a Star Wars marketing day (which obviously made its way to Reddit) the story will take place roughly five years after Revenge of the Sith and will follow surviving Padawan Cal (via GamesRadar). This rumor also states that one of the game's main plot points will revolve around Cal's mentor figure - a woman named Ceres. It's set after Revenge of the Sith We don't know the specific time in which the game is set, but we've heard that it will take place at some point between Episodes 3 and 4, after the end of Revenge of the Sith but before Luke Skywalker's appearance in A New Hope. This places it after the Galactic Empire hunted the 10,000-strong Jedi Order practically to extinction, leaving only a small fraction of Jedi alive (aka Order 66). With the promise that the game will be set 'in the dark times', it sounds like our Jedi protagonist may be more the hunted than the hunter. You'll play as a young padawan EA's official webpage for Fallen Order specifies you'll play "a surviving Padawan", technically meaning a Jedi apprentice rather than a fully-fledged master of the Force. Given the dearth of living mentors left to train you, it's possible Obi-Wan Kenobi or Yoda – or some less high-profile Jedi, like Quinlan Vos – will appear in a supporting role. The single-player mode comes first Respawn co-founder Vince Zambella tweeted about the upcoming game, describing it as an 'SP' (single-player) story. While a multiplayer component seems likely, given both Respawn's strengths in the area and EA's focus on online play, it sounds like the primary focus this time could be on a well-delivered single-player experience. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/pmowM5FVDrqGHBbdzLoeQm.jpg Star Wars: Battlefront II (2017) I find your lack of faith disturbing It's been a bit of a fallow year for Star Wars, with Star Wars: A Solo Story struggling in cinemas and the negative player response to EA Dice's Star Wars: Battlefront 2 – largely in reaction to its prevalent use of microtransactions – still in recent memory. Jedi: Fallen Order has been handed to a different studio, albeit one that's still a subsidiary of EA. But Respawn has garnered a lot of respect as the studio behind Titanfall and Titanfall 2, two critically acclaimed sci-fi action games that pit players against each other in giant mechanized suits, and which both came with strong single-player and multiplayer offerings. So, while we haven't heard much about Fallen Order so far, it looks like the game is in safe hands. 9. When Windows 7 reaches its End of Life on January 14 2020, Microsoft will no longer support the aging operating system, which means anyone using Windows 7 could be at risk as there will be no more free security patches. However, with many people – and businesses – still using Windows 7 (we reported a few days ago that Windows 7 is actually gaining users), this could leave a lot of people in the lurch, which is why late last year Microsoft announced it would be offering Windows 7 Extended Security Updates for a fee. It has now been revealed who will be eligible for those extended security updates (ESU), and how much they will cost. Here’s everything you need to know about how to prepare for Windows 7 End of LifeThe cost of supportMicrosoft has apparently disclosed how much these updates will cost, and they will be made available to Enterprise and Microsoft 365 customers, which can buy the Windows 7 Extended Security Updates on a per device basis. These updates are aimed at businesses that are unable to move to Windows 10 before Windows 7’s End of Life date, and are only meant to offer support while businesses prepare to move. The pricing is expensive, and the cost rises over the years. So, for support for Windows Enterprise users using Windows 7 for the first year after the End of Life date (January 2020 – January 2021), the cost is $25 (around £20, AU$35). This rises to $50 per device (around £40, AU$70) for year two (January 2021 – January 2022), and $100 (around £80, AU$140) for year three (January 2022 to January 2023). It appears that at the moment that Microsoft is hoping by 2023, Windows 7 use will be small enough to stop offering the extended security updates. As this is a per device cost, businesses with numerous PCs running Windows 7 will soon find this very expensive. If they are using Windows 7 Pro, then those prices are even higher, with $50 (around £40, AU$70) for year one support, $100 (around £80, AU$140) for year two and $200 (around £150, AU$280) for year three. If you’re a non-business user who wants to keep using Windows 7, then you could theoretically sign up as an Enterprise user, as there’s no minimum purchase necessary for the Windows 7 ESU, but we wouldn’t recommend it. It’s far cheaper – and easier – to say goodbye to Windows 7 and instead upgrade to Windows 10. Spectre and Meltdown were vulnerabilities found in several processors from Intel, ARM and AMD. Although it seems that they were never exploited, they could have allowed hackers to access private information including passwords and encryption keys (a risk known as a side-channel attack). Most alarmingly, these flaws had been present in chip designs for over 20 years. Mozilla acted immediately, and released an update to prevent malicious web pages reading private data. Now, the company is working on a project called Fission that will strengthen the browser and protect users from any similar vulnerabilities found in future. 11. Most of my time is spent around geeks who keep introducing me to cool stuff that I don’t already know about. It was 2017 when I first heard about the “very cool” Mi Sports Sneakers from some overly-impressed colleagues at my office. I looked it up on the internet and the shoes genuinely looked quite amazing for the price. I was impressed, but not blown away like my colleagues who saw it during their China trip. After a couple of months, I met Jai Mani, Product Head, Pocophone Global. He was wearing the same shoes I read about on the internet, and from that distance, they looked nothing less than a pricey Nike sneakers. I kept noticing the shoes throughout the meeting and of course, I finally asked him about them to be sure. From the design to the quality of material and finish, everything seemed really impressive for the price. By that time, I knew I am going to buy these from China as I wasn’t sure they’ll be coming to India. As expected, the first gen sneakers didn’t make it to India, but the new and improved Mi Men’s Sports Shoes 2 are now available for purchase for Rs 2,499. The shoes will be available on Xiaomi’s crowdfunding platform from February 6, with an early bird offer starting at Rs 2,499 and shipping starts from March 15. Since it’s from Xiaomi, many would be wondering if it comes with some tech inside it, but it’s a not a smart shoe. It doesn’t come with a chip in the sole, LEDs or self-lacing tech, but it does follow Xiaomi’s smart design and quality material philosophy. Why is Mi Men’s Sports Shoes 2 is a great deal? The best part about the Mi Sports Shoes 2 is that at less than half of a regular sneakers cost, it offers a combination of comfort, style, and durability. The on-feet look of the shoes can rival most premium shoes from mainstream shoemakers. It is manufactured using a uni-molding process which uses 5 separate layers and materials to make the sole. Instead of regular manual glue combination, the company presses and binds the layers using a thin polyurethane film with a mold. This process ensures a cleaner finishing and also reduces the possibility of glue opening up. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/VWVWidGMcABNM9YJSErZaF.jpg The company says this process also provides better stability and support to the feet. The midsole is made of special material that makes it more resilient and reduces deformation. The top of the shoe is crafted using a high-elastic knitting process with a fabric mesh that is breathable and washable. You can literally wash these shoes in the washing machine without the fear of it getting damaged. Furthermore, the fishbone structure helps it provide a good fit and comfortable cushioning while dealing with accidental sprains. The Mi Men’s Sports Shoes 2 will be available in Black, Dark Grey, and Blue colors. The company had mentioned that the shoes will be available on its crowdfunding platform for now, which means they might soon hit the Mi store as well. 12. On 30th November, it was revealed that the data of 300 million guests of the Marriott hotel chain had potentially been exposed by hackers of an unknown origin. Recently, the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, blamed the Chinese Ministry of State Security for this enormous breach of privacy and personal information. But regardless of the culprit, the key question on the minds of CISOs across the globe once again makes itself known: how can we prevent a breach as catastrophic as this from happening to us? Firstly, it’s important to assess the motivations behind a hacking like this. Generally, with breaches on this scale the hackers are either nation states or large criminal groups. You have to ask what the potential motivations could be for both parties. For criminal groups it’s often financial gain and the ability to sell credentials and identities on the dark web, or to access other systems with the stolen credentials. For nation states the motivation could be more sinister and intimate – governments that are tracking the movements of ‘persons of interest’ would find huge value in being able to access a database of 500 million individuals and continue to monitor their behaviour for potentially 4 years. In recent news, we’ve heard about the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation (GRU) involvement in global hacking scandals, and it’s considerably recognisable how much countries like Russia could gain from an attack like this. They certainly have the resources. Whilst the motives behind the Marriott attack are yet to be revealed, we know for certain that an international superpower such as China has the resources to hack almost any global corporation. China accused over Marriott data breachMarriott says 383m customers were hit in data breachThe true cost of a data breachProtecting customer dataLike many companies with a large customer base, Marriott store private and personal information. It is critical that organisations charged with protecting customer data take better steps to ensure that any cyber-attacks are quickly identified and stopped before damage is done. They should look towards smarter systems that utilise artificial intelligence to effectively and accurately identify genuine cyber threats in real time. Because security teams are flooded with such huge quantities of data, and as such, it is almost impossible to manually detect malicious activity. Without artificial intelligence enhancing our detection efforts, threats will go unnoticed – and as seen in the Marriott case, this could be for as long as 4 years. Even companies that have implemented security tools that monitor for attacks often find that they cannot differentiate between unusual activity and genuine threats. This in turn means that a huge volume of alerts are raised, requiring manual investigation from human analysts. These false positive alerts waste time and distract attention away from investigating genuine threats. It would be surprising if none of Marriott’s security tools had detected this attack over the past 4 years, but the alert may not have been prioritised amongst all of the noise, causing the security team to miss it. So how can security teams be certain that they’re not missing breaches like this? Perhaps the answer actually lies in artificial intelligence. AI’s potentialAI enables already intelligent and interconnected systems to autonomously converse, improving the accuracy of threat detection across the network, endpoint devices, cloud environments and Investigator Bots. By using these multiple ‘senses’ to observe behaviour across the entire organisation, security alerts can be notified the exact moment unnatural behaviour – and potential breaches – occur. But the ability to instantly identify a threat’s location isn’t the only advantage to using AI. This is because artificial intelligence can also closely follow the path of an attack across devices and networks, building an accurate picture of the threat, using all the information gathered from its multiple senses. With the AI revolution increasingly introducing itself to all walks of life, CISOs of companies like Marriott who are anxious over attacks like this happening to their own organisation, worrying about what is on the network, unable to keep up with all the alerts, can embrace this change positively. CISOs should see real value in the way AI Triangulation and sensory AI can provide them with one cohesive platform that protects their organisation from emerging threats, essentially replacing the need to purchase multiple single-point solutions – and in the long term, potentially saving their companies hundreds of millions in costs. With a threat that is identified instantly through such triangulation, all points of entry are covered, and CISOs can get some well-earned sleep at last. 13. Update: Microsoft has confirmed this is a DNS problem with some ISPs, and stated that it was resolved for everyone but a few users. In a support update, the company wrote: “The Windows Update service was impacted by a data corruption issue in an external DNS service provider global outage on January 29, 2019. The issue was resolved on the same day and Windows Update is now operating normally, but a few customers have continued to report issues connecting to the Windows Update service. “We expect these issues will go away as downstream DNS servers are updated with the corrected Windows Update DNS entries.” [Original story follows below.] A number of Windows 10 users have apparently been having trouble connecting to the Microsoft Store, and more crucially, Windows Update. Reports have broke out online describing such gremlins in the works of Windows 10, as Windows Latest spotted, and they’re allegedly being caused by a DNS issue. At first, the denizens of Reddit were reporting that the problem was with Comcast DNS, and that switching to an alternative DNS server (like Google’s) remedied the issue. That workaround was only successful for some, though, and further reports (one of which was on Microsoft’s Answers.com forum) have popped up of non-Comcast users being unable to get Windows Update or the store to function, including users in the UK on BT, TalkTalk and possibly other ISPs. So there appears to be a problem on Microsoft’s end somewhere, seemingly persisting – even though the very latest comments on the Answers.com thread suggest Windows Update now appears to be working again, it’s not actually downloading anything, or functioning correctly. Investigation underwayA Microsoft support engineer chimed in on Reddit to say: “Microsoft is aware of this issue and is investigating. We’ll provide more information as it becomes available.” Apparently this bugbear is only affecting a fairly limited set of Windows 10 users, but nonetheless, it’ll hopefully be solved sooner rather than later, given that having Windows Update failing to function is a pretty major faux pas (and not being able to download apps or games from the Microsoft Store could doubtless be a major annoyance, too). Meantime, you could always try the workaround of switching your DNS server to see if that has a positive effect. We’ve highlighted all the best free and public DNS servers, and we describe how to switch servers if you scroll further down the article, past the recommendations. 14. Virgin Media says it can achieve home broadband speeds of up to 8Gbps using its existing infrastructure following a successful trial of Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON) technology in Cambridgeshire. The cable operator says it believes it is essential to futureproof its network against future demand from customers and to maintain its speed leadership in the UK. Although a number of service providers are now investing in fibre to the premise (FTTP) networks, Virgin Media’s cable network has historically offered faster speeds than what its rivals can provide, while it has frequently rolled out upgrades to customers. Virgin Media 8GbpsThis latest trial in Papworth, venue of previous Virgin Media technical trials, saw selected residents able to access symmetrical 8Gbps speeds and give the company the ability to see how the service would behave in a real-life setting. “We’re delighted with the success of the trial,” Richard Sinclair, executive director of connectivity at Virgin Media, tells TechRadar Pro. “It’s a bit like being a Formula One team: while we’re speeding around the race track, we’re learning a lot about how the speeds are being used.” Sinclair is keen to emphasise that these speeds have been achieved without the need to deploy new cables and that it is only equipment at the customer end that has changed. EPON has traditionally been used to deliver speeds of 1Gbps but new equipment from partner ARRIS has helped to increase this transmission rate. To independently verify the speeds, Virgin Media worked with Ofcom’s technical partner SamKnows which fast tracked the development of a multi-gigabit speed testing tool. Although, Virgin Media has no plans to roll out the new speeds more widely in the immediate future, it believes it will be better placed to do so when the time comes. “[in this trial] We’ve worked with our equipment suppliers, engineers, procurement, backroom stuff. A lot of things that will hopefully be boring to our customers,” adds Sinclair. “My philosophy is trial, trial and trial again. That feedback is already flowing back into the process to ensure we optimise the quality of our services. The best new of the trial is we’ve been able to deliver those speeds using our existing infrastructure. “With the volume of our customers’ internet usage almost doubling every year, trials like this will ensure we have the capability to meet the demand of data-hungry services in the future – be that over cable or full fibre.” http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/f6qVKLpVwhFUs2XavzCopJ.jpg Changing demandThe faster speeds have obvious benefits when it comes to streaming and downloading 4K content or video games, but Sinclair says Virgin Media has to be ready for future use cases and changing demand. Households are connected more devices to the network, applications are becoming more data intensive, and demographic trends such as adults house sharing are all having an impact. The reliability of the network is also important, especially when it comes to things like connected CCTV cameras. Sinclair accepts that some of this can be solved through better consumer equipment, such as routers equipped with Wi-Fi 6 or are able to prioritise essential traffic, but that this can only be achieved if the speed going into the home is sufficient. The move has already been hailed as an important step forward by Virgin Media as it looks to stay one step ahead of the competition. "The time to deployment is impressive which underlines what can be done with the existing infrastructure," Paolo Pescatore, an independent telecoms analyst, told TechRadar Pro. "[it’s] a key move in driving costs down and improving network efficiencies.” "Moving forward we will see all providers focus on network expansion, offering faster speeds, and improving in home connectivity." Futurologist Tom Cheesewright added that any measures to artificially constrain use will stifle innovation and that it is only by giving people access to the network that a new generation of applications will emerge. “We’re seeing use cases that we never would have thought of,” agrees Sinclair. “It’s about giving people a superior network and allowing customers how to innovate or not.” Here are the best Virgin Media broadband deals for February 2019http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/digital-home/~4/8MLODuQ3Kg0

  17. UPDATE: The new true crime thriller I Am The Night, starring Chris Pine, has been added to our list of the best TV shows to stream on Stan. Find out more about it on page 2! Anyone who's used the streaming service Stan knows that there's a veritable smorgasbord of great content available to stream at any given moment, which can make the decision of what to watch an overwhelming prospect. That's why we've created the TechRadar guide to the greatest TV shows on Stan right now (in no particular order). We'll keep this best TV show list constantly updated with the latest television series that you should be watching – and also explain why they're worth your time. The best TV shows on NetflixThe best movies on NetflixThe best movies on StanThe best TV shows on Foxtel NowI Am The Nighthttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/HtjsH6zsyYkhsHywu6mhCF.jpg Image credit: Stan/TNT From Patty Jenkins, director of Monster and Wonder Woman, comes I Am The Night – a true crime thriller which explores the famously unsolved Black Dahlia murder that sent shockwaves through Los Angeles (and the world) in the 1940s. The series sees Jenkins reunite with her Wonder Woman star Chris Pine, who plays Jay Singletary, a reporter who's still haunted by the case several years later. Jay teams up with Fauna (India Eisley), a young woman who hopes to find answers about her mysterious past. Unfortunately, this leads them right into the orbit of an infamous Los Angeles gynecologist, Dr. George Hodel (Jefferson Mays), who may or may not be connected to the Black Dahlia case. Like many other Stan exclusives, new episodes of I Am The Night are fast-tracked direct from the US. Seasons on Stan: 1 Get Shortyhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/rzpJB8uN8ERRQ3izZ4SqxK.jpg Somewhat different to the John Travolta-starring movie and Elmore Leonard-penned book the show is based on, Get Shorty still sticks to the same beats while bringing its own unique take to the source material, with a new cast of characters and a grittier Breaking Bad-inspired style and black sense of humour. Instead of Chilli Palmer, we get Miles Daly (Chris O'Dowd) a discontent criminal who wants out of his murderous lifestyle. Through work, he meets Rick Moreweather (Ray Romano), a washed-up producer who owes money to Daly's boss. Sensing the movie business might just be his ticket out, Daly teams up with Moreweather to devise a plan that will (hopefully) solve all their problems. Darkly funny and stylish, Get Shorty is a terrific show (once you get over your original idea of what Get Shorty is meant to be). Seasons on Stan: 1 Better Call Saulhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/yWfhnzuENHk57MSLJY5zYg.jpg Due to the immense success of his previous show, Breaking Bad, creator Vince Gilligan was given the opportunity to create this prequel spin-off series set six years prior. The show follows the fan favourite character Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk) and the events of his life which led him to become the delightfully crooked lawyer we know as Saul Goodman. Similar in style and tone to Breaking Bad (though not quite as grim), Better Call Saul is a welcome continuation of a beloved franchise. Now in its fourth sesson, Better Call Saul is getting very close to the events of Breaking Bad, with characters like Gus Fring (Giancarlo Esposito) appearing much more regularly. After the shock ending of the show's third season, it's clear that things are about to get very dark moving forward, and we personally can't wait to see Jimmy go off the rails. Seasons on Stan: 4 Condorhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/e3nHGoEwouNJGizA2W6J4j.jpg Based on the classic Robert Redford-starring political thriller Three Days of the Condor (or alternatively, the original novel Six Days of the Condor), this TV reimagining brings the action to a modern day setting and sees CIA analyst Joe Turner (Max Irons) who stumbles into a secret plan that could threaten the lives of millions of people in the name of national security. Before long. everyone in his office is assassinated, and now Joe must keep hits wits about him if he has any chance at survival. Featuring William Hurt, Mira Sorvino and Brendan Fraser in supporting roles, Condor is a thrilling show that's not to be missed. Seasons on Stan: 1 Billionshttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/k8mFgWgMnrxS9jHbRsZeN7.jpg Exploring the high-stakes world of high finance and hedge-fund managers, Billions follows an epic battle between two New York City titans. U.S. Attorney Chuck Rhoades (Paul Giamatti) is on a mission to take down hedge-fund king Bobby Axelrod (Damian Lewis), though the line between right and wrong is not as clearly defined as their roles would have you think. With terrific performances and exceptional writing, Billions is must-see prestige television at its finest. Seasons on Stan: 2 Friday Night Lightshttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/PF3egAy3jmybJc6CbybAzH.jpg Every once in a while, a television show will transcend the film or book it's based on to become something truly special. The TV adaptation of Friday Night Lights does both of these things. The series follows the lives of football players and coaching staff in a small Texas town. Kyle Chandler does the best work of his career as Coach Taylor, and he's ably supported by a rotating cast of young actors who will eventually go on to become big stars, such as Michael B. Jordan, Taylor Kitsch and Jesse Plemons. Even if you don't know a thing about American football, it's easy to get swept up in the lives of these characters, which is the sign of a truly great sports film or TV show, in our opinion. Friday Night Lights is now available to stream on Stan in its entirety. Seasons on Stan: 5 Romper Stomperhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/XqiD2DxkHnQWDeuUSirkcU.jpg Based on the incendiary 1992 Australian movie of the same name, Romper Stomper brings the discussion around racism in Australia back to the forefront in this confronting and provocative Stan Original series. Turning its attention on white nationalism instead of neo-Nazis this time around, this slickly-produced series stars Lachy Hulme as the heinous leader of Patriot Blue, a racist anti-Muslim group. Hard-hitting and (unfortunately) ripped from the headlines, Romper Stomper is the kind of high-quality Australian drama that we don't get very often anymore. Seasons on Stan: 1 Breaking Badhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/gQQfKzuFLQ4SKcCFKnHQKU.jpg One of the most successful and critically-acclaimed shows of all time, Breaking Bad follows Walter White (Bryan Cranston), a high-school chemistry teacher who is diagnosed with cancer. With death on the horizon, Walter assumes the alter-ego Heisenberg and puts his chemistry knowledge to use in the production of crystal meth, with help from his drug dealing ex-student Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul). How far will Walter go to provide for his family, and will they even be around when all is said and done? Truly, one of the most riveting television shows to ever hit the small screen, Breaking Bad is essential viewing. Seasons on Stan: 5 Justifiedhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/9x3T7nhRAa33Gq78FQRPR5.jpg A western series set in the modern day, Justified sees tough-as-nails U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) return to his hometown of Kentucky to dole out some seriously old-school justice. He'll also have to deal with his old acquaintance Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins), a petty criminal posing as a white supremacist who may or may not get a chance to turn his life around. Seriously good stuff. Seasons on Stan: 6 Sherlockhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/RGgPbEa67pMAbqKAhHrAKV.jpg A fantastic reimagining of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories, the series Sherlock brings world's most famous detective (played magnificently by Benedict Cumberbatch) to modern-day London where he solves crimes with his friend, Watson (Martin Freeman). Cumberbatch plays Sherlock with a borderline personality disorder, maybe even reaching into the realm of Asperger’s Syndrome. When combined with Watson's more grounded influence, the pair become an inseparable crime-solving duo. Exclusive to Stan, Sherlock is now in its fourth and final season, each consisting of three movie-length episodes. If you love these characters or British mystery shows in general, Sherlock is required viewing. Seasons on Stan: 4 Flesh and Bonehttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/BEkVJy3wZHXzf2rcYGRXCG.jpg Those who've seen the Oscar-winning film Black Swan know just how cutthroat the world of professional ballet can be, with the immense pressure placed on dancers and the constant backstabbing that takes place. Flesh and Bone explores similar territory, following an incredibly talented ballerina named Claire (Sarah Hay) who at first seems uptight and sexually repressed, but is actually hiding some seriously dark secrets some deep emotional problems. Created by Moira Walley-Beckett (producer of Breaking Bad) and with direction from David Michôd (Animal Kingdom), Flesh and Bone is a beautiful, tragic and shocking show that is worth your time. Seasons on Stan: 1 The Shieldhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/AmJty9YX2GoP4aRjWqe8ZY.jpg A cop show with a difference, The Shield follows a tactical strike team headed by Vic Mackey (Michael Chiklis) that is as violent and corrupt as the street gangs it faces on a daily basis. Set in the fictional Los Angeles district of Farmington, Mackey and his crew (which includes Justified's Walton Goggins) must cover their tracks so that their ghastly exploits aren't discovered by detectives Claudette (CCH Pounder) and Dutch (Jay Karnes). Somewhat of a precursor to the show Sons of Anarchy, which also deals with gangs in a fictional Californian town, stars many of the same people and is also written by Kurt Sutter, The Shield is hard-hitting drama at its finest. Seasons on Stan: 7 Dawson's Creekhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/wncaDCuksBfobdvmsWpLaj.jpg If you're in your early thirties, chances are that Dawson's Creek played a significant part in your high school years. Whether you identified with these impossibly good-looking and verbose supposed teenagers, or you just had the hots for Dawson (James Van Der Beek), Joey (Katie Holmes), Jen (Michelle Williams) or Pacey (Joshua Jackson), Dawson's Creek was surprisingly compelling viewing for a teenage melodrama. Relive your youth by watching Dawson's Creek in its entirety on Stan. Seasons on Stan: 6 This is England '86 and '88http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/QKhwWaF2qyptRPT63qx4GS.jpg Following on from director Shane Meadows' semi-autobiographical masterpiece This is England (also available to stream on Stan), This is England '86 and '88 see all of the film's cast members return to continue their characters' stories in the longer format of television. With the whole skinhead scene left behind them, Shaun (Thomas Turgoose), Woody (Joseph Gilgun) and Lol (Vicky McLure) each try to find their place in the world, all to the backdrop of the 1986 FIFA World Cup. Fans of the film will love these two follow-up shows, and if you haven't seen the movie they're based on, we highly recommend that, too. So far, only This is England '86 and '88 are available on Stan, though we expect that the third and final series, This is England '90, will eventually make its way to the service. Seasons on Stan: 2 Black Mondayhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/sieDLQLBR2UPwMSYi2pgec.jpg If you love The Wolf of Wall Street, you're bound to love Black Monday, a new Showtime comedy series from creators Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (Superbad, Preacher). Set one year before Wall Street's catastrophic Black Monday event in 1987 (the worst fall since The Great Depression), this hilarious series recounts the events that led up to that fateful day. Starring Don Cheadle (Avengers: Infinity War) and Andrew Rannells (Girls), the show is a blisteringly funny takedown of 1980s excess and greed. Exclusive to Stan in Australia, each new episode will be fast-tracked to the service as it airs. Seasons on Stan: 1 Who is America?http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/igz2miX2FFgSV4NEWaTQF8.jpg You would think that comedian Sacha Baron Cohen would be too famous at this point to dupe people into giving him ridiculous interview material, but somehow, the Borat / Ali G / Bruno creator has devised a new batch of characters that will cause his subjects to play directly into his hilariously devious hands. Who is America? aims its sights squarely on US politics, with Cohen interviewing the likes of Sarah Palin, Bernie Sanders and Dick Cheney, as well as a number of everyday Americans. His goal is the same as it's always been: to systematically reveal hypocrisy. Whether Cohen's new characters will be as successful as his previous creations is anyone's guess, but it's great to have him back and doing what he does best. As this is a Showtime production, Stan has the exclusive rights to it in Australia — that means you can expect new episodes to be fast-tracked as soon as they air overseas. Seasons on Stan: 1 Parks and Recreationhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/QUHwncASYkFuXPTtq796UT.jpg An Amy Poehler-led comedy series that made stars out of Chris Pratt, Nick Offerman, Aubrey Plaza and Aziz Ansari, Parks and Recreation follows Leslie Knope (Poehler), an ambitious Parks Department worker who consistently tries to make her small town a better place. Unfortunately for her, she is usually impeded by her disinterested boss, Ron Swanson (Offerman), as well the usual governmental bureaucracy that stands in the way of change. Fans of shows like The Office and 30 Rock will love Parks and Recreation. Seasons on Stan: 7 Will & Gracehttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/BAxD73wXeFBQHDgVJgC6BJ.jpg A trailblazing series that fostered equality during its initial run, Will & Grace has returned in 2017 with the reunion that fans of the sitcom have been wanting for years. The show follows a gay lawyer named Will (Eric McCormack) and his straight interior decorator roommate Grace (Debra Messing) as they struggle to find love in New York. Along for the ride are Will's flamboyant friend, Jack (Sean Hayes), and Grace's well-off assistant, Karen (Megan Mullally). The new series beings the foursome directly into today's turbulent political climate with expectedly zany results. On top of being the exclusive Australian home of the new Will & Grace series, Stan also hosts all eight seasons of the original series, so fans will be able to binge their hearts out. Now, if we could only get a Friends reunion... Seasons on Stan: 9 The Other Guyhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/eXVc32L8U7VcchmRfmPvd.jpg A refreshing Australian comedy/drama series, The Other Guy has more in common with the likes of Netflix's US series Master of None than just about any Australian show in recent memory. Starring comedian Matt Okine, The Other Guy tells dramatised versions of real relationship stories from Okine's own life – sometimes funny, other times heartbreaking, With terrific writing that focuses on character over punchlines, you should definitely give the Stan Original series The Other Guy a shot. Seasons on Stan: 1 I'm Dying Up Herehttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/3JxQnYUoTPDDdrtZYstuSh.jpg From Executive Producer Jim Carrey comes I'm Dying Up Here, a new dramedy series that follows a group of sardonic Los Angeles comedians in the '70s, all of which are hoping to get their big break, maybe even landing a couch spot on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. Funny and quick-witted, yet sad and thoughtful, the show offers a glimpse into the struggle and dedication that goes into pursuing a career in stand-up comedy. As you'd expect from a Showtime series, the show does not shy away from the sex, drugs and hard-living lifestyles of its characters. Get on board this one early, because these kinds of shows have a tendency of not sticking around too long. Seasons on Stan: 1 Communityhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/ncmNiKxAb2edu3iLN7geDK.jpg Following the exploits of a particularly low-rent community college, Community is a geeky, pop-culture obsessed delight. Community's homaging of all things movies, television and video games is spot on and incredibly realised, due to top notch direction, writing and performances. Best of all, the entire series is available on Stan, with new episodes appearing on the service as soon as they air in the United States. Seasons on Stan: 6 Friendshttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/3bdPnHevAyaUnG5z7hRpE4.jpg We all fell in love with Monica, Chandler, Ross, Rachel, Joey and Phoebe during the '90s, and now we can revisit every single one of their hilarious antics exclusively on Stan! Completely remastered in HD and presented in widescreen, this is the definitive way to watch all 10 seasons of Friends – quite frankly, the fact that we're able to watch a '90s sitcom in this kind of quality is astounding. We wish all our favourite shows from yesteryear were treated with this kind of loving attention. Seasons on Stan: 10 Seinfeldhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/2sGbQMNx746UfD62vQPWRV.jpg Perhaps the greatest sitcom ever made, Seinfeld has finally made its way onto Stan in its entirety. Not only that, the "show about nothing" has been completely remastered, presented here in both widescreen and high definition – not bad for a sitcom from the early '90s! A revolutionary series that took a few seasons to initially catch on with audiences, Seinfeld follows a group eccentric and self-absorbed friends from New York who relentlessly pick apart the people they meet and the situations they happen to find themselves in – all in the observational style of comedy that made comedian and star Jerry Seinfeld famous in the first place . Featuring enough classic characters to give The Simpsons a run for its money, Seinfeld is required viewing for comedy fans. Seasons on Stan: 9 Angie Tribecahttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/aFbve9dFDkgqBsXpwHYVKR.jpg From creators Steve and Nancy Carell comes Angie Tribeca, a hilarious spoof comedy series that parodies modern cop procedural shows like CSI, Law and Order and NCIS with a nodding wink to Police Squad, The Naked Gun and Loaded Weapon 1. Rashida Jones is particularly fantastic as the titular detective, though the show is also filled with celebrity cameos, including Bill Murray and James Franco. Some may find the constant stream of goofy (and somewhat predictable) jokes a little overbearing, but if you long for the return of this kind of thing, you'll have an absolute blast with Angie Tribeca. Seasons on Stan: 3 The IT Crowdhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/w3Qm2WrHMqjjjVN5zeEx2U.jpg It's safe to assume that if you're reading this website, you're quite tech-savvy, so you'd probably have an intimate knowledge of what it's like to deal with computer illiterate people. The IT Crowd understands this frustration in a way that only those who've actually lived it can – and it's absolutely bloody hilarious. The show follows the misadventures of tech support officers Jen (Katherine Parkinson), Roy (Chris O'Dowd) and Moss (Richard Ayoade), both in the office and out in the real world – spurred on in part by their eccentric boss, Douglas Reynholm (Matt Berry). It's like a geeky, British version of Seinfeld. Seasons on Stan: 4 Key and Peelehttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/AWLuECJc6BfpTCuax4h7rh.jpg With a hilarious partnership that began on the old sketch comedy series Mad TV, bi-racial comedy duo Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele shot to superstardom with their own Comedy Central series, Key and Peele. Tackling a range of issues including relationships, race and celebrity, Key and Peele will leave no stone unturned in their quest to make you laugh uncontrollably. Featuring brilliant impersonations, observations and characterisations, Key and Peele is essential viewing for fans of sketch comedy. Seasons on Stan: 5 Party Downhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/9gspMQoVjBF6RmLEsterJ4.jpg Another show that was taken from us far too soon, Party Down is a comedy about group of out-of-work actors (and one hard science fiction writer) who are forced to take on jobs at a catering service. Each episode takes place at a different party, furthering the characters' relationships in the process. Featuring hilarious turns from Adam Scott, Lizzy Caplan, Martin Starr, Ken Marino and Jane Lynch, Party Down is most certainly the kind of show that deserves to be rediscovered on Stan. Seasons on Stan: 2 No Activityhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/jRrvUKcxWW2tQPUrbYXmDC.jpg Taking a page out of Netflix's successful playbook, Stan opted to produce its own original series this year in No Activity, a hilarious improvisational cop show in which almost nothing at all happens. Patrick Brammall and Darren Gilshenan play two detectives on stakeout who pass the time with oddball observations and banter. That's pretty much the entire gist of the series, though there is an overarching story in there, too. Highly recommended, Stan's first original series is a wonderfully inventive and funny show. Seasons on Stan: 2 Spacedhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/DpQoFJuGLJw59mLfB6jcnT.jpg Before they hit the big time with Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and director Edgar Wright made a splash with Spaced, a hilarious comedy series about a man (Pegg) and woman (Jessica Hynes) who pretend to be a professional couple in order to get a good deal on a flat. Not only would they have to keep up the facade, but they'd also have to deal with their crazy new neighbours. Filled with geeky references and the kind of quick-fire humour that made Pegg, Frost and Wright famous, Spaced is a delightful series that many people of a certain age will immediately empathise with. Seasons on Stan: 2 Penny Dreadfulhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/2MR6rMc2ByZqgcpKTMDhP9.jpg Cancelled as it may be, Penny Dreadful still provides us with three magnificent seasons of Victorian-era horror, fantasy and mystery. Seamlessly interweaving with classic literary horror characters, like Victor Frankenstein and Dorian Grey, Penny Dreadful is not afraid to go extremely dark and gruesome. The plot sees explorer Sir Malcolm Murray (Timothy Dalton) and the powerful medium Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) recruit an American gunslinger (Josh Hartnett) in their quest to save Murray's daughter, who may have been taken by creatures of the night. A must-watch for horror fans. Seasons on Stan: 3 Wolf Creekhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/gLfENrFgqTMLbYzC8nnpNd.jpg A few years ago, it would've been unthinkable to imagine that one of Australia's highest quality television shows would be small screen version of Wolf Creek, complete with the legendary John Jarratt returning to the character that made him an international star. But thanks to Stan, that's exactly what's happened, and now we've got a second season to sink our teeth into. The first season followed a woman whose family was murdered by the Outback serial killer Mick Taylor (Jarratt), leading to an epic game of cat and mouse between the two. Now, Mick is back, and this time he's set his deadly gaze on a bus full of tourists. Who will survive and what will be left of them? You'll have to watch to find out! Seasons on Stan: 2 Supernaturalhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/GD6qFNNjkwabBFfzrHHa4n.jpg It's hard to argue with 12 seasons (and counting) and an enormously devoted fanbase – Supernatural is sometimes dark, sometimes fun and sometimes spooky fantasy show that follows the Winchester brothers as they travel around hunting demons, ghosts and creatures of all kinds. What's not to like? With its leading actors sharing an incredible chemistry that makes them come across as real brothers, Supernatural is the kind of show that fans of Buffy and Angel would totally get a kick out of. With so many episodes already available, Supernatural is the perfect binge-worthy show for fans of all things creepy and mysterious. Seasons on Stan: 12 Philip K. Dick's Electric Dreamshttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/KfqQgJEQhKyJn9mGXaLKTU.jpg An ambitious sci-fi anthology series, Philip K. Dick's Electric Dreams adapts ten of the famous author's short stories for the small screen. Even if his name is unfamiliar to you, chances are you've watched one of the many films adapted from Dick's classic works, such as Blade Runner, Total Recall, Minority Report and A Scanner Darkly. Available exclusively through Stan in Australia, Electric Dreams tells a different story each episode, and has an incredible cast including Steve Buscemi, Terrence Howard, Anna Paquin and Bryan Cranston, who also acts as executive producer. A thought-provoking series that tackles a number of important ethical and political issues, Philip K. Dick's Electric Dreams has all the makings of a new science fiction classic. Seasons on Stan: 1 Dexterhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/qAPNPHgQ9nXHUwbAfLe4SG.jpg A show with an absolutely killer premise, Dexter is a police procedural with a twist – what if the Miami P.D.'s most talented forensics expert was also the most notorious serial killer in the city's history? Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) can't help but indulge in his murderous urges, which involve chopping people up and collecting their blood for his microscope slide collection. However, thanks to the tutelage of his cop adoptive father (James Remar), Dexter is able to focus his bloodlust on people who deserve it, in this case, murderers of innocent people. But how long can Dexter remain undetected within his department? And will his detective sister Deb (Jennifer Carpenter) find out about his horrendous hobby? The first four seasons of Dexter are absolutely magnificent, and while the show takes a bit of a dive after that, it remains required viewing at all times. Bloody good. Seasons on Stan: 8 Preacherhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/nAxk8LHRcu3NT2UPXCCTqe.jpg From the surprising creative team of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, more famous for writing comedies such as Pineapple Express and Superbad, comes Preacher, a violent adaption of Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon's classic comic series of the same name. Jesse (Dominic Cooper), a troubled Texas preacher with a criminal past, discovers that he has the power to speak as if channeling the voice of God, which in turn causes people to do whatever he says. Problem is, sometimes they take his words all too literally, often with gruesome consequences. To make matters worse, the arrival of an ex-girlfriend named Tulip (Ruth Negga) and a wise-cracking Irish vampire named Cassidy (Joe Gilgun) threaten to push Jesse back over the edge into darkness. A slow burn horror show with a dark sense of humour, Preacher is now in its second season, with new episodes fast-tracked from the US. Seasons on Stan: 2 Twin Peakshttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/vWCjpCgZ5seGZ2vd5TpWMF.jpg One of the most classic and mind-blowing television shows of all time, Twin Peaks redefined the general public's perception of what a television drama was supposed to be like. Creator David Lynch presented the world with a standard murder mystery scenario, which would go on to become more bizarre and out there with every episode. When popular high school student Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee) is found murdered, FBI agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) arrives in the town of Twin Peaks with two agendas – to find out who killed her, and to eat some damn fine cherry pie. Peppered with a range of eccentric characters, Twin Peaks is one-of-a-kind. Also, with the new Twin Peaks reboot currently streaming on Stan, now's as good a time as any to get yourself caught up. Seasons on Stan: 2 Twin Peaks: The Returnhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/7N6YVhLS9JUxGHnZxmUaL9.jpg Sure, the original Twin Peaks series has been on this list for quite some time, so you may be asking yourself why the much-hyped series return would warrant its own entry. Those who have seen the 2017 version however, can certainly attest to this being an entirely different animal indeed. Darker and more twisted than before, the new Twin Peaks eschews the soap opera stylings of the '90s version in favour of something more akin to co-creator David Lynch's cinematic accomplishments. Prone to long stretches without dialogue and numerous trip-out sequences, this Twin Peaks recalls Lynch's own films Lost Highway, Inland Empire and even his feature-length debut, Eraserhead. Of course, Lynch has also stated that his polarising Twin Peaks follow-up, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, is the key to understanding this new series, so that may offer some insight into what this new show is attempting to do. Both the original TV series and its cinematic sequel are available to stream on Stan, so you may want to catch up on those before jumping straight into this mind-bending revival. The new Twin Peaks is bound to divide audiences once again, but the only way you'll only know which side you fall on is to take the plunge into this tenebrous abyss. Seasons on Stan: 1 iZombiehttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/9nguhNzSdixPsUY424bsDL.jpg This wild series from Rob Thomas, the man behind Veronica Mars, has an absolutely unique premise – after having been turned into a zombie, Olivia "Liv" Moore (get it? Live more?) takes on a job at a morgue. With no control over her hunger, Liv takes starts eating the brains of murder victims, only to discover that this gives her a look into the final moments of the victims' lives. Now, her boss is encouraging her to eat brains, so that she can use her new-found powers to solve crimes (see? I told you this crazy show was unique). Based on a Vertigo comic, iZombie is one of the coolest new shows of year. Best of all, each new episode of the show is fast-tracked on Stan, with Season 3 having just kicked off in all its ghoulish glory. Seasons on Stan: 4 Hannibalhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/YfM9e9nmHvuS38eLN2ifjg.jpg Possibly the most gorgeously grotesque show on television (American Horror Story doesn't even come close), Hannibal follows the world's most famous cannibal psychiatrist, Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen), as he attempts to evade discovery by his friends, FBI profiler Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) and FBI director Jack Crawford (Laurence Fishburne). Fans of serial killer thrillers owe it to themselves to check out Hannibal, as the show manages to be even more horrifying than the Thomas Harris novels and films it's based on. It also happens to be the best-looking show currently on the air, with an operatic flair that puts most films to shame. Seasons on Stan: 3 11.22.63http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/FJtKNB9T5PDqSFMEWzbBg4.jpg Based on the terrific Stephen King novel of the same name, 11.22.63 is the story of Jake (James Franco), a high school teacher who is tasked with travelling back in time to prevent the assassination of JFK, thus preventing the Vietnam War from ever happening. Jake arrives 3 years before that fateful day and he'll need all that time to unravel the mystery and make sure he takes out the right target. Produced by JJ Abrams and with heavy involvement from King, 11.22.63 is a riveting thriller that will have you counting the days between each fast-tracked episode. Seasons on Stan: 1 Ash vs Evil Deadhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/VEpvNKbWFQmuMZC3fRXa7D.jpg If you're a devoted fan of the Evil Dead series of films, then Ash vs Evil Dead is enough to warrant a Stan subscription all on its own. Bruce Campbell returns as Ash, the heroic jackass who keeps letting 'Deadite' demons into the world, only to have to violently dispatch them with his trusty boomstick and chainsaw hand. Director Sam Raimi also returns, directing the visually spectacular pilot and producing with his partner since the beginning, Robert Tapert. Just as hilarious and gory as the movies that preceded it, Ash vs Evil Dead does not disappoint in the slightest. Series on Stan: 3 The Flashhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/2R6fMq9YikDNaW97U6B9SV.jpg The CW has done a terrific job with its DC Comics properties, kicking off its own small screen DC Universe with the popular series Arrow. In the five years since that series came to be, the North American network has brought a number of interconnected DC shows into its stable, including Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow. However, we'd argue that the strongest show in its impressive lineup is The Flash – it absolutely nails the Scarlet Speedster in a way that even the upcoming big screen version of the character looks unable to top. We put this down to Grant Gustin's incredibly charming and likeable performance as the fastest man alive, as well as the terrific ensemble cast that joins him on his adventures every week. Funny, dramatic, action-packed and filled with terrific visual effects work, The Flash is the best DC Comics show currently on television. Seasons on Stan: 2 The Tudorshttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/newtTkSNWx2jhrRVLgqRFF.jpg Starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers (Match Point), Henry Cavill (Man of Steel) and Natalie Dormer (Game of Thrones), The Tudors is a lavishly-produced drama that tells of the reign and marriages of King Henry VIII. You might be thinking "oh great, another costume drama", but The Tudors is far from your average period piece. Expect a story filled with sex, obsession, betrayal and political intrigue. Seasons on Stan: 4 The White Queenhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/CTn9pf3q5KGtifMMdeDRoE.jpg Set during one of the most turbulent times in England's history, The White Queen follows three relentless women as they vie for the throne. To do this, they will scheme, manipulate and seduce anyone who will help them get to the top. With exquisite period detail and terrific performances (Rebecca Ferguson of Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation is exceptional as Queen Elizabeth), The White Queen is a must-watch for those interested in 15th Century England. Seasons on Stan: 1 Spartacushttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/WcKgf7tKqM5uqY7xpMGZ7W.jpg Before he was the showrunner for Marvel's Daredevil, Steven DeKnight worked on the gratuitously violent and sexual series Spartacus. At first glance, you'd be forgiven for thinking that there's nothing more to the show than meat-headed beefcakes fighting and screwing in a 300-aping manner, but there's so much more going on – we follow Spartacus (the late Andy Whitfield and his replacement, Liam McIntyre) as he is taken into slavery and forced to do cruel and unimaginable things in the gladiatorial arena, just waiting for the day that he can finally get his revenge on slave-owners Batiatus (John Hannah) and Lucretia (Lucy Lawless). All of this culminates in one of the most satisfying season finales in recent memory. Be warned – this show is filled with grotesque violence and an immense amount of sex and nudity. It's like Game of Thrones times ten. Series on Stan: 4 Deadwoodhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/A2FxZuvJpHmFw5LcHY2Pjf.jpg HBO's western series Deadwood was devastatingly cancelled before its time, but thankfully we can relive the show's harsh and brutal world on Stan in its entirety. Ex-lawman Seth Bullock (Timothy Olyphant, clearly loving his status as a modern day western hero) arrives in the lawless town of Deadwood to start a hardware business and provide for his dead brother's family. Before long, the crime and corruption of this town, headed by bar owner Al Swearengen (Ian McShane), forces Bullock back into the life he tried so desperately to leave behind. Deadwood is an utterly fantastic show. Seasons on Stan: 3 http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/digital-home/~4/dIq_62uzHa0

Here are the best TV shows to stream on StanNow that Stan has partnered with Disney, the service is the official streaming home of Marvel Studios content in Australia, meaning you can expect all the best superhero movies to land here at some point. These are the ones currently streaming on Stan. Black Pantherhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/7TUQQnhLBGcgVbaicHZeAB.jpg A groundbreaking film for Marvel Studios in terms of ethnic representation, Black Panther gave audiences a superhero tentpole film with an almost entirely black cast that managed not only to break Hollywood boundaries, but also box office records – in fact, Black Panther is currently the highest-grossing standalone superhero movie of all time. T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman), new king of Wakanda, finds himself challenged by an angry outsider (Michael B. Jordan) who claims to have a legitimate birthright to the throne. Now, he must stand up and become the king his nation deserves, not only for the good of his people, but for the good of the world. As thought-provoking as it is action-packed, Black Panther is a triumph from start to finish. IMDB Rating: 7.4, Rotten Tomatoes: 97% Thor: Ragnarokhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/TgcGi7RvfBVZh7qK4Ygd2f.jpg One of the funniest and most entertaining Marvel movies to date, Thor: Ragnarok finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Loki (Tom Hiddleston) ejected from Asgard after their once-banished evil sister Hela (Cate Blanchett) returns to take back the throne. Stuck on a junk planet on the other side of the universe, Thor coincidentally reunites with his Avenger buddy Hulk (Mark Ruffalo). With the help of their new friend Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), the group sets off a plan to return to Asgard and rescue their people from Hela's tyrannical rule. Bursting at the seams with energy and vibrant colour, Thor: Ragnarok is an unabashed space opera with its tongue firmly pressed against its cheek. You can thank director Taika Waititi (What We Do In The Shadows) for that – watch out for his scene-stealing role as Korg, the imposing rock warrior with a hilariously gentle Kiwi accent. IMDB Rating: 7.9, Rotten Tomatoes: 92% Spider-Man trilogyhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/Ckxeo7y36xWQiXWgE9Ljfn.jpg Spider-Man has been thrust back into the spotlight in a major way of late, with a recent appearance in Avengers: Infinity War, a fantastic PS4 video game and a terrific new CGI animated film all contributing to the character's timelessness. Because of this, now's the perfect time to revisit Sam Raimi's blockbuster Spider-Man trilogy, which starred Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst and James Franco. Though the films themselves vary in quality, they're still a lot of fun and hold up fairly well in a storytelling sense. Also, all three movies are available in 4K Ultra HD resolution on Stan, and they all look fantastic. IMDB Rating: 7.3, Rotten Tomatoes: 90% Need some kid-friendly content to entertain the family with? Stan has a number of great kids and family movies on offer that should keep everyone happy. These films are guaranteed to please the whole family. Red Doghttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/HqENQq8j58kL26cHpX6hfM.jpg An Australian family favourite, Red Dog tells the heartwarming true story of a delightful pooch that united an entire community while roaming the Outback looking for his actual owner. The dog brings people together everywhere he goes – some people find love, others find themselves. Starring Josh Lucas and Rachael Taylor, Red Dog is a beautiful movie that the whole family will enjoy. Though the dog is red, this is a true-blue Aussie classic. IMDB Rating: 7.5, Rotten Tomatoes 82% Speed Racerhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/bJGBfEBgHb9XfUzJYXDErn.jpg A movie that's way better than its reputation would suggest (the film was derided upon its initial release but has steadily grown a cult following), Speed Racer was clearly a passion project for the Wachowskis, directors of The Matrix. A tale of integrity, family and standing up to corruption, Speed Racer is much more than a sugary kids film (though it is that, too). Featuring some of the most mind-blowing and cartoony visuals of any live action film in existence, Speed Racer puts its pedal to the metal and achieves some deliriously psychedelic race sequences in the process. Sure, it'll still have its fair share of detractors who refuse to get behind its incredibly vibrant and overwhelming visuals, but give it a chance and you might just find it to be a sensational family film with a huge heart. IMDB Rating: 6.0, Rotten Tomatoes 40% Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoolehttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/7pNB6zp3EcoBzeuUJxRi3d.jpg When one thinks of director Zack Snyder, the mind often goes to his violent action films, such as 300, Watchmen and Batman v Superman. But did you know he also directed an Australian animated kids film about warrior owls? While obviously lighter in tone than some of his other works, Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole is just as stylish as you'd expect from Zack Snyder, with his liberal use of slow-motion and speed-ramping giving the film that unmistakable Snyder look and feel. Featuring stunning animation and terrific voice performances from Aussie actors like Ryan Kwanten, Essie Davis, Abbie Cornish, Richard Roxburgh and Joel Edgerton, Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole is a real hoot. IMDB Rating: 7.0, Rotten Tomatoes 50% Happy Feethttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/JEWKY2vFqRHNiqgHYZVGUN.jpg Another Australian animated kids film about birds, Happy Feet took the world by storm when it released in 2006. A delightful family film from director George Miller (Babe, Mad Max: Fury Road), Happy Feet follows a penguin named mumble whose lack of singing talent leads him to dance to find his mate. With an all-star cast featuring Elijah Wood, Robin Williams, Hugh Jackman, Nicole Kidman and Brittany Murphy, Happy Feet is guaranteed to make you tap your feet. IMDB Rating: 6.5, Rotten Tomatoes 75% Where the Wild Things Arehttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/R4ghZvK2ZE3bQkia98sps8.jpg Based on the classic children's book by Maurice Sendak, Where the Wild Things Are is an awe-inspiring story of a young boy named Max (Max Records) who runs away from home after an argument with his mum (Cathertine Keener), only to end up on an island filled with creatures who name him as their king. Max instantly befriends a gentle giant named Carol (voiced by James Gandolfini) and while everything is going well for a while, things start to turn dark, leading Max to realise how much he misses home. Directed by Spike Jonze (Her, Being John Malkovich), Where the Wild Things Are is an artful family film that hits you right in the heart. IMDB Rating: 6.8, Rotten Tomatoes: 73% Feel like watching something that'll put a tingle in your spine? Well, look no further, because Stan has a large selection of horror films that should please even the most hardened gore-hound. These are some of the best. Carriehttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/oFa2dBYyyKWw3zLH3wTpr9.jpg There have been countless Stephen King film adaptations over the last few decades, but Carrie was the first (and arguably best). Sissy Spacek plays a tormented teenage girl who is pushed over the edge by her mean classmates and domineering mother – with incredibly violent results. A bloody classic. IMDB Rating: 7.4, Rotten Tomatoes: 93% The Descenthttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/f4FPjX3CMqqp9tnMsKLtta.jpg Not one for claustrophobic types, The Descent follows a caving expedition that goes horribly wrong, leaving a group of women to fend for themselves against some truly terrifying cave-dwelling creatures. An absolute masterpiece of terror, The Descent is one of the best horror movies to come out of the UK. IMDB Rating: 7.2, Rotten Tomatoes: 85% Screamhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/2PpMiZ8td2x69TXweiRdJZ.jpg The late, great horror director Wes Craven had a habit of making a game-changing fright flick at least once per decade. In the '70s, it was The Last House on the Left. In the '80s, he birthed the horror icon Freddy Kruger in A Nightmare on Elm Street. The kids of the '90s, however, had grown accustomed to the usual horror tropes, which is why Craven's self-aware slasher Scream became such a sensation. The characters in this knew they were in a horror film, which allowed the movie to exploit the genre's rules at every turn. IMDB Rating: 7.2, Rotten Tomatoes: 79% Wolf Creekhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/rrsD5r3bZ99Krp4gCqSyE3.jpg Loosely inspired by actual events, Wolf Creek gave birth to Australia's first real horror icon in Mick Taylor (John Jarratt), a sadistic bushman who enjoys nothing more than hunting and killing tourists in the middle of the Outback. Once you've watched this, check out its sequel, Wolf Creek 2, as well as the incredible Stan Original series. IMDB Rating: 6.3, Rotten Tomatoes: 53% Cabin in the Woodshttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/K5VTG2TTTUCiDskJRPqjEG.jpg Another self-aware horror movie in the vein of Scream, Cabin in the Woods acts as a meta-commentary of the horror genre and its audience. We've all seen countless horror films set in a cabin, each one featuring a different group of stock characters facing some form of horrific demise – we don't even seem to mind that only the threat itself ever really seems to change. The joke here is that there are actually people behind the scenes who are pulling the strings – it's all a matter of re-arranging the pieces to see what happens next. Starring Chris Hemsworth (before he was famous) and written by Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Avengers), Cabin in the Woods is both clever and scary. IMDB Rating: 7.0, Rotten Tomatoes: 9.2 In the mood for a good tear-jerker? What about a serious, high-brow piece of cinema? The films below should do the trick. Here are our picks for the best dramas on Stan. Taxi Driverhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/cdT5nmvUagLgpApSat2AJ.jpg Few films in the history of cinema are as powerful as Martin Scorsese's masterpiece, Taxi Driver. Made in the mid '70s, back when New York was a rougher, dirtier place, the film practically oozes a scuzzy, neon-bathed atmosphere all of its own. Robert De Niro plays Travis Bickle, a troubled, lonely Vietnam vet who takes a gig driving a cab because he just can't sleep at night. Though he's disgusted with the Big Apple's sleazy, vice-filled ways, Travis can't seem to stay away from its seedier areas, picking up questionable fares in bad neighbourhoods and frequenting scummy porno theatres in an attempt to cure his insomnia. After a failed attempt to start a normal relationship with political campaign worker Betsy (Cybill Shepherd), Travis meets a 12-year-old prostitute named Iris (Jodie Foster) as she attempts to run away from her despicable pimp, Sport (Harvey Keitel). With his revulsion pushed over the edge, Travis stocks up on firearms and channels his immense anger and hatred into a mission to save Iris from her tragic circumstances. Fantastically directed and acted, and featuring the late, great Bernard Hermann's haunting final score, Taxi Driver is a film that every lover of cinema needs to see. Best of all, you can stream Taxi Driver on Stan in glorious Ultra HD resolution. IMDB Rating: 8.3, Rotten Tomatoes: 98% Patriots Dayhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/4rgbMyFNkRPYroxUjiPdc3.jpg A harrowing (and eventually) uplifting retelling of the events surrounding the Boston Marathon bombings in 2013 which killed three people and injured hundreds of others. Directed by Peter Berg (Deepwater Horizon, Lone Survivor), Patriots Day plays out like a procedural thriller that begins with the morning in question and follows through to the aftermath, including the ensuing manhunt that saw brave police officers and federal agents (played by Mark Wahlberg, Kevin Bacon and John Goodman, among others) track down and confront the terrorists responsible. Emotionally devastating yet hopeful for the future, Patriots Day is a powerful film that's filled with heart, showing how the inhabitants of a city can come together to rise up against hatred. IMDB Rating: 7.4, Rotten Tomatoes: 80% There Will Be Bloodhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/DR3pdpju4wrAS73YVUsAxe.jpg A stunning commentary on the nature of greed and morality, Boogie Nights director Paul Thomas Anderson's There Will Be Blood is a blistering examination of how easy it is for a soulless man to prosper in a morally bankrupt world, while those who attempt to sink to his level find only their own demise. Daniel Day-Lewis won an Oscar for his portrayal of Daniel Plainview, an unscrupulous prospector who will stop at nothing to achieve wealth and power as an oil magnate, even if that means wrenching away oil rights from people who don't know any better. On the other side of the coin is Paul Dano's character of Eli Sunday, a preacher whose family was swindled by Plainview for their oil rights. Though Sunday, as a man of God, attempts to take the moral high ground against Plainview, his soul is quickly corrupted by greed and a need to overpower his adversary, demonstrating how religion can be poisoned by capitalism. If you come into the film looking for a plot, you may find yourself disappointed. However, if you're after a story filled with big, overarching themes that explore the very essence of human nature, almost like a biblical parable, you might find There Will Be Blood to be a stone-cold masterpiece. IMDB Rating: 8.1, Rotten Tomatoes: 91% The Social Networkhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/wBcuHvBHair2m5TaqJX3zH.jpg Based on true events, The Social Network gives us an insight into the crazy drama behind the formation of Facebook, in which founder Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) is sued by his co-founder Eduardo Saverin (Andrew Garfield) for squeezing him out of the business, as well as the Winklevoss twins (both played by Armie Hammer), who claim that Zuckerberg stole their idea for the whole site. With sharp, elegant direction from David Fincher (Fight Club, Gone Girl), a cracking script from Aaron Sorkin (The Newsroom, Steve Jobs), and a classic score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), The Social Network is one of the best films about the tech industry ever made. Needless to say, we certainly 'Like' this film. IMDB Rating: 7.7, Rotten Tomatoes: 96% Good Will Huntinghttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/gbjJucFrjXaRJnoTQ5FmF4.jpg Matt Damon and Ben Affleck became global megastars off the back of Good Will Hunting, each bagging an Oscar for writing the film's incredible screenplay. Damon plays Will, a troubled young man from the South Boston projects who is gifted with unparalleled intellect and a photographic memory. When his gift is discovered by a genius M.I.T. professor (Stellan Skarsgård), Will is sent to see a psychologist (Robin Williams) in an attempt to get his life back in order so that he can reach his full potential. A tear-jerking masterpiece. IMDB Rating: 8.3, Rotten Tomatoes: 93% Chopperhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/DWFQCwxMWq9jj6UpMeNDhU.jpg Playing Australia's most notorious criminal, Eric Bana absolutely disappears into the role of Chopper Read. At the time, it was unthinkable that the TV funnyman could convince in such a dark and intense role, but his comedic edge, backed by the hulking frame he developed for the film, turned out to be a match made in heaven. Perhaps the best and most quotable Aussie true(ish) crime movie ever made. IMDB Rating: 7.2, Rotten Tomatoes: 72% Moonlighthttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/q2PUiGi7TEPPSDFopPL2Zb.jpg Winner of the Best Picture award at the 2017 Oscars, Moonlight is a shattering chronicle of the childhood, adolescence and adulthood of a gay African-American male. Told in three segments, the lead role of Chiron is portrayed by three different actors, each facing the struggles of growing up in a poor neighbourhood in Miami. Burdened by drug-addicted mother, Chiron's only guidance comes from an unlikely source in local drug dealer Juan (Mahershala Ali in his Oscar winning role). Gripping and powerful, Moonlight is a triumph. IMDB Rating: 7.5, Rotten Tomatoes: 98% Animal Kingdomhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/JVNkrA7rCXYhJH3qAukwAg.jpg After the death of his mum, Joshua (James Frecheville) is forced to live with his maternal grandmother (Jacki Weaver), the matriarch of a crime family that starts to fall apart after the after one of her sons is killed by police and the others kill a random cop in retaliation. Will Joshua fall into this cycle of violence, or will he resist it? Playing out like a Greek tragedy in the suburbs of Melbourne, Animal Kingdom is one of the most powerful Australian films of all time. IMDB Rating: 7.3, Rotten Tomatoes: 95% Raging Bullhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/SyCjMGZzm3LbVgMzqRotK9.jpg Based on the life of real life boxing champ Ray LaMotta (Robert De Niro giving what is perhaps the most powerful performance of his career), Raging Bull explores a man gripped by insecurity – one who'd rather get his face bashed in than confront his own demons. Abusive to his wife (Cathy Moriarty) and violent towards his brother (Joe Pesci, also magnificent), LaMotta frequently attempts to pay for his sins in the ring, each gruelling fight feeling like a culmination of his troubles at home. De Niro famously packed on the kilos to portray an out of shape LaMotta past his prime, but that's arguably the least impressive aspect of this amazingly raw and ferocious performance. One of director Martin Scorsese's greatest achievements, Raging Bull is a gripping study of toxic masculinity. IMDB Rating: 8.2, Rotten Tomatoes: 95% Need a good laugh? Stan has a number of great comedies in its library, and these are some of our favourites. Here are the best comedies currently streaming on Stan. Goonhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/6gqB256D2JnnjJbu35hk9e.jpg Perhaps the best ice hockey movie since Slap Shot, Goon follows Doug 'The Thug' Glatt (Seann William Scott), a loveable meathead with fists of steel who becomes the enforcer on a minor-league hockey team. An enforcer's role is to forcibly protect his teammates and have their backs when opposing players mess with them on the ice. That also means handing out beatings, something that Glatt is quite adept at doing. But when famously-ruthless enforcer Ross 'The Boss' Rhea returns from suspension (for seriously injuring the star player of Doug's team), he and Glatt are destined to throw down in a bout of on-ice fisticuffs for the ages where only one man will walk away. A sports comedy with Fight Club-level violence, Goon might be a bit much for the squeamish. That said, if you're well aware of how bloody ice hockey can be and think you can handle it, this is a seriously great sports movie. If you do like what you see, you might also want to hit up its sequel, Goon: Last of the Enforcers, which is also on Stan. IMDB Rating: 6.8, Rotten Tomatoes: 82% Ghostbustershttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/37XGhR5SEcFERDthYhjgAj.jpg When there's something strange in your neighbourhood, who you gonna call? Ghostbusters, that's who! Released in 1984, Ivan Reitman's spooky comedy achieved instant-classic status, thanks in part to a brilliant and hilarious script by stars Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis. But it would be Bill Murray's burgeoning star-power and wise-ass demeanour that would bring the whole film, which is about ghost hunting scientists in New York City, together so perfectly. Equal-parts hair-raising and rib-tickling, Ghostbusters is a positively ghoulish movie that the whole family can enjoy. IMDB Rating: 7.8, Rotten Tomatoes: 97% Zoolanderhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/MECcAozzErSNHAh5BGbYZD.jpg Though it wasn't immediately loved at release, Zoolander has grown over the years into an honest-to-goodness comedy classic. Ben Stiller is the titular beef-witted male model that is duped into a plot to assassinate the Malaysian Prime Minister. Owen Wilson plays Hansel, an up-and-coming rival to Zoolander. Though the two initially hate each other, they soon come together in an attempt to stop the evil plan that has been orchestrated by the truly ridiculous fashion designer, Mugatu (Will Ferrell). Backed with quotable lines and hilarious scenes, Zoolander is really, really, really, ridiculously funny. IMDB Rating: 6.6, Rotten Tomatoes: 64% Ace Ventura: Pet Detectivehttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/nURd3vyKZ6BvdaWGTubYEK.jpg Jim Carrey was an unstoppable force in the early nineties, and along with The Mark and Dumb and Dumber, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective solidified him as the world's biggest comedy star. Carrey plays a ridiculously over-the-top private dick who specialises in animal-related cases. When the NFL's Miami Dolphins mascot is stolen, it's up to Ace to find out where it is and who was behind it. Cue a whole lot of hilarious tomfoolery! IMDB Rating: 6.9, Rotten Tomatoes: 46% American Ultrahttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/yftLNdVAJyGR9Hf44oYEDM.jpg Like Pineapple Express meets The Bourne Identity, American Ultra is much better than it has any right to be. Jesse Eisenberg plays a stoner convenience store clerk who hears some specific words and is promptly activated into a CIA killing machine. In an effort to cover up this mess, the agency sends two agents (Topher Grace and Connie Britton) to neutralise the situation, but things don't fly as smoothly as they'd hoped. Playing opposite Kristen Stewart, Eisenberg does a decent job of playing an action hero. Funny and surprisingly violent and action packed, American Ultra is an underrated gem. IMDB Rating: 6.1 In Brugeshttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/KDdfqHgVFLH28bTcVGfKfU.jpg A hilariously dark comedy about hit men who must lay low in Belgium after a hit gone wrong, In Bruges is the type of movie that will have you laughing uncontrollably one minute, then crying the next. Writer/director Martin McDonagh (Seven Psychopaths, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri) delivers a witty script filled with sudden moments of brutal violence that will leave you speechless. IMDB Rating: 7.9, Rotten Tomatoes: 84% If you're a fan of muscular action films, you've come to the right place. Join Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig as they each take turns in the iconic role of MI6 agent and super spy, James Bond. Sure, not all of the 007 films are great (we're looking at you, Die Another Day), but they're always entertaining. And, thanks to the 4K visual upgrade, you may be more inclined to suffer through some of the lesser entries on the picture quality alone! Stream the Bond collection on Stan now The Expendableshttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/j637r9QkK4kNvgaxuipCVb.jpg The film that rounded up some of the greatest action movie stars of the '80s and '90s (along with a couple of newcomers), Sylvester Stallone's The Expendables will bring a huge smile to the face of anyone who grew up during this high-testosterone era. Joining Stallone are the likes of Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Jet Li, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Terry Crews and more. While the film itself is far from perfect, we can't help but get a kick out of seeing our heroes fighting alongside each other. IMDB Rating: 6.5, Rotten Tomatoes: 42% Kill Billhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/yw8A5FbyaMPzhpZjXZG8yE.jpg Quentin Tarantino's grand homage to exploitation cinema, Kill Bill sees star Uma Thurman go on a roaring rampage of revenge, killing everyone who was involved in her attempted assassination. Fresh out of a coma after several years, this former assassin will make her old associates pay, one-by-one, for ruining her life. And when that's done, she's taking her blood-drenched katana on a trip to meet Bill (David Carradine), her former boss and lover. Split into two pieces (both of which are now streaming on Stan), Kill Bill is a violent revenge masterpiece. IMDB Rating: 8.1, Rotten Tomatoes: 85% The Terminatorhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/9cekBpL7yDMnPvFxATxm7i.jpg James Cameron made his career with this time travel-themed action thriller, which also worked to solidify Arnold Schwarzenegger as one of the biggest stars on the planet. Arnold plays a Terminator – a cyborg killing machine that's sent back in time to kill a great military leader's mother (Linda Hamilton) before he's ever conceived. This mother's child will eventually be responsible for defeating the machines in the distant future. Thankfully, a human soldier (Michael Biehn) has also travelled back in time to protect her. Perfectly mixing action, sci-fi and horror, The Terminator is a white-knuckle experience from beginning to end. IMDB Rating: 8.0, Rotten Tomatoes: 100% Mad Maxhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/cfK4DsodimCJFfiCfexCnG.jpg Long before he reached Fury Road, Max Rockatansky (Mel Gibson) was a highway cop in a particularly rough part of Australia – his beat ravaged by murderous and borderline savage street cretins. When Max's family and partner are killed by a gang with a vendetta, he gets mad. Extremely mad. One of Australian cinema's most classic films, Mad Max is high-octane revenge thriller that boasts some of the greatest scenes of vehicular carnage ever committed to celluloid. Max would eventually end up in a post-apocalyptic future, but his humble origins should never be forgotten. IMDB Rating: 7.0, Rotten Tomatoes: 90% The Nice Guyshttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/UKhCBrxMtfzodzWicUdFbV.jpg Shane Black, writer and director of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, returns to the world of gumshoe detectives with The Nice Guys, a smart and funny mystery that establishes Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling as a comedic match made in heaven. Set in the late '70s, Crowe's tough guy enforcer teams up with Gosling's bumbling private eye to solve the mystery of a dead porn star. Filled with hilarious one-liners and terrific action sequences, The Nice Guys is the kind of movie they really don't make anymore, which makes its very existence something of a miracle, wouldn't you say? IMDB Rating: 7.4, Rotten Tomatoes: 92% We all like a good thriller, and Stan is chock-full of them. If you want a film that will have you on the edge of your seat, you've come to the right place. Below is a list of some of the best thrillers currently available on Stan. Panic Roomhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/yqgsGufQbMGkY3DTow6myB.jpg Following his anarchist epic Fight Club, director David Fincher decided to make something more down to earth as his follow-up, and while Panic Room may seem like your typical home invasion thriller on paper, in this visionary auteur's hands, it's anything but. One of the more technically astounding thrillers you're ever likely to see, Fincher ratchets up the tension with his daring (and seemingly impossible) camera work, taking the audience through several stories of a New York brownstone with a swiftness and precision unseen at the time of its release. The film follows a newly-divorced mother (Jodie Foster) and her insulin-dependant daughter (a young Kristen Stewart) as they fight off a trio of home invaders. While the pair manages to reach the home's impenetrable panic room, a problem arises when it's revealed that the burglars are actually after the contents of said room. Suspenseful and smart, Panic Room is a must-watch thriller. IMDB Rating: 6.2, Rotten Tomatoes: 75% Nightcrawlerhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/orCUfkSyvGNzofP3zyrKni.jpg Jake Gyllenhaal is incredibly creepy as Louis Bloom, a man who makes money by filming grisly crime footage and selling it to news stations in Los Angeles. Driven by greed and hubris, Louis starts blurring the line between observer and active participant, eventually instigating violent incidents in order to get the scoop. A cutting commentary on our modern news cycle obsession, Nightcrawler is a riveting thriller with terrific performances. IMDB Rating: 7.9, Rotten Tomatoes: 95% Wake in Frighthttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/ziCHgHJi69ozYb9khNZAw6.jpg An absolutely brilliant and confronting critique of Australian drinking culture and 'mateship', Canadian director Ted Kotchoff (First Blood) does not hold back at all when it comes to showing some of our country's uglier aspects with Wake in Fright. A school teacher finds himself trapped in an Outback mining town after losing all his money in a two-up game, leading him to go on a night of binge-drinking, fighting and kangaroo shooting with some unhinged locals. It's safe to say that he may never be the same again after this night... IMDB Rating: 7.7, Rotten Tomatoes: 100% Léon: The Professionalhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/CSZt5f5sUQWvt9eJpoaYSe.jpg French director Luc Besson has made several cult classic films (The Fifth Element, La Femme Nikita, The Big Blue), but perhaps none is more beloved than Léon: The Professional. Notable for being Natalie Portman's first film, Léon tells the story of a lonely assassin (Jean Reno) who befriends a young girl after her whole family is killed by a crooked cop (Gary Oldman). Violent and thrilling, yet filled with warmth and heart, Léon: The Professional is bloody fantastic. IMDB Rating: 8.6, Rotten Tomatoes: 71% Science fiction films offer us visions of the future (well, from the perspective of the times in which they were made) that open our minds to the possibilities of what humankind might be capable of, in both the good and bad sense. These are some of the best sci-fi films on Stan. District 9http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/NfjjjRZdrVrxZyzpRx2Gmc.jpg The film that put both director Neill Blomkamp (Elysium) and star Sharlto Copley (Powers) on the international stage, District 9 is an ingenious science fiction Apartheid allegory that puts marooned aliens in South African concentration camps. An anti-alien pencil pusher (Copley) has his whole world turned upside down when he is sprayed with some kind of liquid that's slowly turning him into an alien, and now he has to team up with one of the "prawns" he so despises if he has any hope of turning back to normal. Hilarious, action-packed and filled with flinch-worthy body horror moments, District 9 is an instant classic that rightfully earned a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars. Now available to stream on Stan in glorious 4K. IMDB Rating: 7.9, Rotten Tomatoes: 90% RoboCophttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/8DJgAD2pBtmzbBJjVjyjXS.jpg With director Neill Blomkamp (District 9, Chappie) announcing that he's bringing RoboCop back to cinemas with a direct sequel to the original 1987 film, now's as good a time as any to revisit this ultra-violent classic. A cutting satire of corporate greed in the '80s, Robocop is more than the sum of its parts. Brilliantly directed by Paul Verhoeven (Total Recall, Starship Troopers), the film sees a rookie cop viciously murdered by a group of criminals, only to be revived by a corporation and used as a robotic crime-fighting product. Pretty soon, his memories start to return, and it's only a matter of time before he tracks down his killers and discovers the real intents of his makers. IMDB Rating: 7.5, Rotten Tomatoes: 88% Blade Runnerhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/frtLc5MPVfirg3X2nwFCF4.jpg Ridley Scott's thought-provoking cyberpunk masterpiece wasn't fully appreciated until a decade after its release, where it received a director's cut that addressed and excised some of the studio interference that plagued the theatrical version of the film. Harrison Ford plays Deckard, the titular Blade Runner. He's a cop of sorts whose job is to hunt down and eliminate rogue replicants, which are like artificial humans created as off-world slave labour. When a group of them decide they'd rather live, going on a killing spree in the process, Deckard sets out to take them down, but maybe this time it won't be so easy... IMDB Rating: 8.2, Rotten Tomatoes: 90% The Matrixhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/xPLyBQx5qPXbP5BD9xwWdR.jpg A science fiction classic, The Matrix is a cautionary tale about artificial intelligence packaged as an action-packed, visual effects spectacular. Inspired by martial arts films, anime and cyberpunk literature, The Matrix sees Neo (Keanu Reeves) discover that the world as we know it is an elaborate computer simulation that masks the real truth – Earth is a wasteland and humans are being kept alive in chambers to act as the batteries powering our new machine overlords. Whoa. IMDB Rating: 8.7, Rotten Tomatoes: 87% E.T. the Extra-Terrestrialhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/cVQ8N9MLP8oAWR6pRvzQ4J.jpg Steven Spielberg is known for making heart-warming, sentimental movies, and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial might be the one that best embodies that. A classic family film about a lonely kid (Henry Thomas) who develops a bond with a friendly alien marooned on our planet, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial is capable of melting even the coldest of hearts. 19. Windows 10 S Mode was first unveiled as a standalone operating system back in May 2017. However, after some mixed reception, the slim OS has been evolving ever since. Most of this criticism came down to the restrictions it places on anyone trying to install any programs not found on the Windows Store. With Windows 10 S Mode, you’ll be limited to apps found on the Microsoft Store, rather than being able to install whatever your heart desires. Luckily, these days you can shift out of Windows 10 S Mode whenever you feel like it for free, so you don’t have to use it. But, Windows 10 S Mode makes a lot of sense for the right kind of user and device – something like the Microsoft Surface Go. Windows 10 S Mode will also be able to take advantage of all the latest Windows 10 updates, like the October 2018 Update and the upcoming Windows 10 April 2019 Update, packed with neat features like a brand new “Light Mode” that’ll offset the gloomy look of Windows 10. This update will also help you manage storage space, so you’ll always have free space for fresh Windows 10 S updates. Windows 10 S will also take advantage of the next big version of Windows 10, which is already being sent out to testers. We’re not quite sure what’s going to be included in this version of Windows, but we have our fingers crossed that it’ll include the Sets feature. Windows 10 S Mode is a core part of the Windows ecosystem these days, so we’re going to dive in and explore everything you need to know about the lightweight OS. Be sure to keep this page bookmarked, as we’ll keep it updated with all the latest Windows 10 S Mode news. Cut to the chaseWhat is it? Windows 10 without x86 and x64 appsWhen is it out? Available nowWhat will it cost? Free to all schools using Windows 10 Prohttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/qiREJPaNsbJLoPi85ifkgD.jpg Windows 10 S release dateWindows 10 S first launched on May 2, 2017, with devices using the OS trickling out over the following months. And, now, Windows 10 S is bigger than ever, a fact that we expect Microsoft to celebrate with new Surface devices at Tuesday’s press event – these lower-spec Windows 10 devices are more versatile than ever before.2 Microsoft has plans to allow users to switch out of S Mode through a simple UI switch, but that’s not quite ready yet. If you’re looking for a quick and easy way out of S Mode, just head to the Windows Store on your device and search for ‘switch out of S Mode’. As for when the switch will get implemented, no one knows, but Microsoft may sneak it in at a later date – we don’t think it’ll be in the October 2018 Update, though. Now, as for the reveal of Windows 10 S itself – Microsoft’s event invitation was titled ‘#MicrosoftEDU’, making no misgivings about its aims with the new OS. While Windows 10 S is not for individual sale, it is issued to IT administrators in education as well as laptops found in stores and online. It’s no coincidence that Windows 10 S is focused on the education sector, where Google’s Chromebooks are experiencing outlandish success. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/E5ac8v8RtQce6chAkkLbfD.jpg Windows 10 S priceWindows 10 S essentially doesn’t cost a dime. The cost of the lightweight OS is more than likely subsidized by hardware makers, assuming they’re not getting it for free. Basically, you don’t really pay for Windows 10 S Mode, instead you’re paying for the hardware running it (with, again, whatever Microsoft is charging its partners to license the software). Save for premium devices like the original Surface Laptop, you can find devices running Windows 10 S Mode starting at just $189 (about £146, AU$251) and cap out around $299 (about £239, AU$396). PC makers across the board, including Dell, HP, Asus, Acer and Lenovo all have Windows 10 S Mode-powered devices in their stables. But, now that Windows 10 S Mode is a thing, it’s a toggle that doesn’t cost anything extra. Both Windows 10 Home and Pro S Mode users are able to go to the Windows Store and opt out of S Mode, though the conversion only works one way – out of S Mode – right now. Though, there will be a switch in the settings app of a future build, that will let users go back and forth. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/KN2QhRVisyJr4SXmQ8zxgD.jpg What is Windows 10 S?Microsoft intends Windows 10 S to serve as a lightweight, more secure version of Windows 10 for lower-end devices. While in “S Mode,” Windows 10 will only support apps that are downloaded from the Windows Store. This talk of a version of Windows that can only download Microsoft-approved apps is familiar, isn’t it? Microsoft believes it has mastered this approach since the turbulent days of Windows 8 RT and Windows 8 with Bing – both of which tried to position Microsoft as the sole provider of apps through curation. The good news is that this allows for a startup time of under 5 seconds as opposed to the 30 - 40 second startup time of Windows 10 Pro. Not only that, but configuring settings (such as Wi-Fi, webcam, etc.) across an entire classroom of students is as easy as inserting a USB stick in each of their laptops. Being in competition with Google’s Chrome OS, Microsoft has, of course, also positioned Windows 10 S as a more secure PC operating system. However, its resilience to viruses is mostly a side-effect of the inability to install apps not approved by Microsoft. Historically, Windows viruses have tended to erupt from untrustworthy internet downloads. Should you find a must-have app that isn't available in the Microsoft Store in Windows 10 S you can switch from Windows 10 S to Windows 10 Home or Pro by just going to the Windows Store and searching for “switch out of S Mode”. Microsoft used to charge a fee for this service, but now it’s free for everyone. Microsoft will also allow users that upgrade to Windows 10 Pro to move back down to Windows 10 S. And, now that Microsoft is rumored to be working on a Windows 10 Lean Mode, which will be even more lightweight and locked down. Oddly enough, the shiny new Surface Laptop 2 now ships with Windows 10 Home, not in S Mode like the previous. That said, what can you expect to see included in devices running Windows 10 S? Well, the Edge browser, OneNote and Windows Ink are all givens. The standard Movies and Groove Music apps, as well as Maps and Mail and Calendar are shoo-ins, too. Of course, we won’t see x86/x64 program support on a Windows 10 cloud operating system until 2019 when the aforementioned Polaris is expected to touch down and implement a ‘virtualization container’ for each of your favorite legacy applications. That means that, yes, should everything work out perfectly, there will be a Windows 10 cloud OS that can emulate the .exe’s of the past. Despite its constraints, Windows 10 S still features File Explorer, and although many of the laptops that come with the lightweight OS pre-installed may ship with smaller capacity SSDs, Microsoft’s forthcoming introduction of OneDrive Files On-Demand will make it so files can be stored in the cloud, but still viewed the same way as locally stored content. All things considered, there are still questions looming around in regard to the viability of Windows 10 S. Fortunately, as new developments emerge to (hopefully) address those criticisms, you can count on us to cover them right here on this page. This gives you the unlimited calling, texting, and data you'd expect. Mobile hotspot is also allowed on the plan, but with some speed limitations. The plan also comes with a Hulu subscription, service in Canada and Mexico, and international texting. For an extra $10 a month per line, you can upgrade to Unlimited Plus, which offers more perks, higher bandwidths for things like streaming and gaming, and more LTE hotspot data. For another $30 per line on top of the Unlimited Basic Plan's price, you get the Unlimited Premium plan, which offers even more. What's more, all of the plans offer 50GB of data at full speed, so you should only experience throttling during periods of network congestion after you've used 50GB of data. We'll explain each in greater detail in our plan breakdown below. But first, here's what you can expect to pay for the Unlimited Basic Plan: 1st line: $60/month2nd line: $40/month3rd-5th lines: $20/monthLimited time discount: 5 lines for $20/line/monthSprint plans: access chargesSprint used to list access charges when you go through the process of selecting a plan and a device on its website. These used to be an easy way to turn an attractive plan price sour quickly, as it could tack on over $10 to the price. Now, Sprint doesn't mention it anywhere that we could find so, so the days of access fees may be on their way out. Sprint's plans will include other taxes and fees though, and they vary by region, so don't expect the price you see first to be the price you pay. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/9d8b11b635025b4f8ea1de3d26c578ec.jpg The right Sprint plan for youWhile the focus from Sprint is largely on unlimited data, there is also an option for you if you don't need much. Here, we'll go through the finer details of each plan, so you'll know what you get. This way you can make an informed decision. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/v45Gh5ybBPnEnmQbf63oDL.jpg Sprint Unlimited Basic plan | Unlimited calls, texts and data | $60/month As we've mentioned, this plan comes with all the service you need. It may not all be the fastest, as there are bandwidth limitations for music and gaming, and video streaming is limited to 480p, but it's unlimited in quantity and you get a free Hulu subscription. The plan also includes 500MB of mobile hotspot at LTE speeds, with unlimited hotspot at 3G speeds after that. On top of that, you get full service and 5GB of LTE data in Mexico and Canada, as well as free texting and basic data in over 200 countries. Video streaming is allowed at 1080p, and you get 50GB of mobile hotspot at LTE speeds before being knocked down to 3G. In addition to the Hulu subscription, you also get Tidal Premium. And, for use in Mexico and Canada, you get 10GB of LTE data instead of the 5GB included in the basic plan. On top of those upgrades, music streaming is allowed at 1.5Mbps and gaming is allowed at 8Mbps. And, for a limited time, if you bring your own device when switching to Sprint, you can save $10 per month on this plan. You still get the unlimited calls, texts, and LTE data, but with this plan, you also keep them while in Canada and Mexico. The mobile hotspot LTE cap is raised even further to 100GB, and 1080p streaming is allowed. The perks are increased as well. You get Hulu, Tidal Premium, Lookout Premium Plus, and an Amazon Prime subscription. And, if you like to use ride hailing services, the plan also includes two $10 credits each month toward Uber rides. The plan is a fair bit pricier, but you can get $10/month off if you bring your own device when switching to Sprint. 21. The forthcoming iOS 13 release date promises big changes for your iPhone and iPad, and it may be enough to scare up some good news for Apple's sluggish iPhone sales. What new iOS 13 feature can you expect? Basically everything that didn't make it into iOS 12 and iOS 12.2, which has mostly focused on stability. The time has come for major UI and app redesigns. iOS 13 rumors are still in their early stages. Most of the features we've heard about are ones left on the cutting room floor from a year ago. We've outlined those. Update: New iOS 13 rumors shed light on what to expect from the 2019 software update, so get ready for a dark mode, tabs to view multiple versions of a single app and a brand new home screen. All are included below. We've also listed our own iOS 13 feature predictions. These are new ideas that Apple could include in future software updates, and really should. Most are long overdue. Here's everything you need to know about iOS 13 in the lead up to Apple WWDC 2019 in early June. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/wduqMBLnvNbBYvFynbSVQH.jpg Apple CEO Tim Cook at the latest iPad Pro event in November (Photo credit: Matt Swider / TechRadar) iOS 13 release dateMonday, June 3: Estimated WWDC 2019 date (based on historical timing) Early June: iOS 13 developer beta meant for paid Apple Developers Late June: iOS 13 public beta may launch for adventurous testersSeptember 2019: iOS 13 likely to launch with new 2019 iPhonesiOS 13 reveal date could be Monday, June 3, as Apple has historically unveiled its new software at WWDC in San Jose. Actually, we don't even know that June 3 will be the official WWDC 2019 date. It's just that last year it was Monday, June 4, 2018, and the year before it was Monday, June 5, 2017. We see a trend here. iOS 13 developer beta: The first iOS 13 beta will likely arrive at or a few days after WWDC, but it's going to be restricted to paid Apple developers. You should probably wait for the public beta, which is always more stable. iOS 13 public public beta: This is Apple's way of testing features on a larger scale, and that may happen toward the end of June. It's typically a more refined version of the iOS developer beta, although it can still be rough and never includes all of the features implemented in the final version of the software. The official iOS 13 release date: We'll get the new iOS 13 software in its final, stable form at the iPhone launch event, what we're calling the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Max and iPhone 11 XR at the moment. The date? Probably mid-September. We'll know for sure at the iPhone launch event. iOS 13 compatibilityApple has continued to support the iPhone 5S, the first phone with a 64-bit chipset inside of it. It's seen six versions of iOS, as have the iPad Air and iPad mini 2. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/BVVFhrMnXcE8m9TUoYRcjN.jpg iOS 13 could revert to shedding the oldest devices from Apple's compatibility list, like it used to do before 2018. That means iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPad Air 2, iPad mini 3, and iPod Touch 6th generation might be the oldest devices on the iOS 13 compatibility list. Apple would essentially require devices to have the A8 chipset or newer to upgrade to iOS 13. This also happens to be the chip in the HomePod and Apple TV 4th generation, so it brings everything into line. In reality, it's in Apple's best interest that you upgrade your hardware, too. We saw what happened when the company price-dropped its battery replacement service in 2018. Don't expect it to go too far with the iOS 13 compatibility list cuts . There's a rumor that iOS 13 will also axe support for the iPhone 6, iPhone 6S, iPad Air 2, and even the iPhone SE. However, you shouldn't buy into this early speculation. Some publications like guessing in hopes of getting it right rather vs reporting factual information. One thing's for sure: Whatever happens, don't expect Apple to make an official announcement at WWDC 2019 if the iPhone 5S isn't compatible with iOS 13. The phone will just show up on a slide, or it won't. Also, remember that not every iOS 13 feature will come to all devices on that list. Some new ideas may require the TrueDepth camera, a rear dual-lens system, or 3D Touch. Big iPad changes neededEvery two years, the iPad seems to get a flurry of meaningful changes. We saw this with iOS 11 nearly two years ago and iOS 9 two years before that. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/d3d3ec921df74d44e2d7f42db851a8d1.jpg That means – in our minds at least – the iOS 13 update is destined to change up the iPad software, and it may be in an effort to make the iPad a better 'computer.' That was our chief complaint of the iPad 11 and iPad 12.9 in 2019. Even if iOS 12 is great on phones, it feels limiting on a tablet when we wanted to do real work. We'd love to see a 'Desktop Mode' to improve our workflow, with a menu and taskbar across the top and bottom. Going along with this is our wish to see Bluetooth mouse support. iOS 13 would, of course, need to include support for a cursor. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 added all of these features in 2018, but with terrible touchscreen execution. Apple could do what it does best and refine an existing Android idea until 'it just works.' Interestingly, the latest home screen rumor (more on that below) mentions that it's an iPad-specific change. Apple could be building its new home screen UI revamp for the iPad before it changing anything on the iPhone. Expanding on the Apple Files app and supporting external storage would also make the iPad Pro a much more productivity-friendly device, as would the long-rumored multi-user support. iPads, after all, are often shared among family members. Home screen redesigniOS 13 may bring the first-ever major changes to the iOS home screen, and it's overdue. We've had this app tile layout since the first iPhone launched in 2007. It works, sure, but it's also a bit stale. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/VQeECDs7yiXBvyBdpbXUUU.jpg While last year's rumors mentioned a home screen refresh, it didn't go into detail about the potential changes. We'd, however, envision parts of the current Today screen (that leftmost widget-like screen) making its way onto the home screen. Being able to peek at snippets of information – the 5-day weather forecast, your next calendar appointment, and the latest Apple News headlines – would be a welcome addition to the unchanged iOS app grid. When talking up Apple Watch face complications, the team behind it used the words 'glanceable information' a lot. That would be a natural fit for the iOS 13 home screen. However, the newest iOS 13 rumors suggest that this is an iPad-specific change. We'll have to wait to see if the iPhone can get in on the home screen UI changes, too. iOS 13 dark mode seems very likelyiOS 13 may in fact be the update in which Apple finally comes through with the long-rumored 'dark mode.' We've been hearing about it for a number of years. Apple introduced a dark mode for macOS Mojave at WWWC last year, so it's fitting to hear Bloomberg report that iOS 13 is going to do the same for the iPhone and iPad in 2019. If the rumor is accurate, this will make it easier to look at apps at nighttime. There's a lot of white and bright hues among current app color schemes, so toning them down would be a great way to compliment the blue-light-reducing Night Shift mode. Camera app revampApple's camera app is extremely basic. It's been a blessing and a curse. It's easy for less tech-savvy iPhone owners to use, but more advanced users are missing out on features that would let them fine-tine their photos and videos. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/QRbKGnRnHHkUH4EDeFpRFb.jpg A revamp to the camera app was also among last year's leaks, and that's the change that piqued our interest the most. The Samsung Galaxy S9 has the ability to snap a photo with gestures, while the LG V40's video tools allow you to fluidly zoom into anywhere on the screen, not just the dead center. The Google Pixel 3 has added a Night Sight mode that aims to end the need for a frequently-photo-ruining flash. Expect Apple to keep the camera app streamlined, but sprinkle in more advanced tools. And if all we get is the ability to change resolutions and frame rates from within the camera app (and not in the settings menu), that'd be good enough. Health and Activity apps on the iPadYour health and fitness data deserves to be seen at 9.7 inches and 12.9 inches, and that's what we're hoping for from the iOS 13 update in the coming months. Both the Apple Health app and Activity app (the one with the rings) present a lot of data to comb over, and seeing bars, graphs, running maps, and various numbers stretched out on the big screen would be ideal. Right now, both apps are limited to the Apple Watch and the iPhone. We think Apple will do this eventually. Doctors could review health data with patients more easily, for example, and senior citizens have complained to us that their iPhone is too small to read all of the health data. We'd also like to see both apps on macOS, but one tracked step at a time. Clipboard managerClipboard manager apps do exist, allowing for multi-copy and paste and copy and paste history, but they're all rather limiting because they're not built into the UI. Apple could change this in iOS 13, and it's another way in which productivity on the iPad could be enhanced. Having a full clipboard manager work at the system level would also help prevent copying over what's in our clipboard currently. SPAM call blockingiOS 13 needs better SPAM call blocking. Absolutely needs it in 2019. It's one of the best features of the Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL, yet the increasing nuisance of telemarketers persists on the iPhone. Okay, last year's iOS update did at least add a call blocking and identification option. But users have to invest in an app (that often costs money annually) to get good SPAM call blocking protection. Apps like Hiya cost $2.99/month or $14.99/year for premium service. The good news is that we see a big shift happening. Verizon is making its SPAM and robocall feature free starting in March, and Apple was recently issued a patent for this sort of feature. Change WiFi and Bluetooth via Control CentralConnecting to new WiFi networks or Bluetooth devices without exiting the app you're using is impossible. Sure, Control Center allows you to toggle WiFi and Bluetooth on and off via this drop down menu, but switching between connections requires you to dive into the Settings menu and submenus. That's rather annoying. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/hWFatNXdHVEeZcLr9o7Lnh.jpg iOS 13 could easily change this, with another frosted overlay menu that lets you pick your connections without kicking you out of your current app. This would be especially handy when traveling and constantly cycling through multiple open WiFi networks. It'd be a shortcut within a Control Center shortcut, and we'd be okay with that. More iOS 13 news to comeiOS 13 is still several months away, even in beta form. However, as we get closer to Apple's WWDC 2019 keynote in June, we expect more leaks to emerge about what the company is working on. If they do pop into the news, we'll report on them here. We'll have to wait for the final version of UI, likely in September with an iPhone 11 launch event. However, the potential iOS 13 features above give you an idea of where the iPhone and iPad software could head in 2019. Need a quick fix? 22. Microsoft has just unveiled the Xbox One S Anthem bundle that pairs Microsoft’s entry-level 1TB console with the game, a controller and one-month trials to EA Access, Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Live Gold. Unfortunately, it’s also the worst way to play the game. According to console benchmark testing done by the experts at Digital Foundry, the Xbox One S offers the worst performance of all platforms tested, putting out a 900p resolution and between 25 and 30 frames per second (fps) in most scenes. The Xbox One X wasn’t able to do much better in terms of frame rate, also staying between 25 and 30 fps in most scenes, but at least was able to display the game in 4K. For comparison, the base PS4 was able to achieve 1080p/30 fps, while the PS4 Pro could either get up to 1800p/30 or 1080p/35. The silver lining to all this is that this bundle is by far one of the cheapest ways to score a new console and a copy of Anthem, as the whole package – which includes the special Legion of Dawn pre-order bonus – will sell for $299 (around £230, AU$400). Digital Foundry didn't take the game's flight controls on PC into consideration, which some have cited as a major disappointment during the demo. What's the reward for putting up with awful control schemes? Well, PC gamers might have the last laugh, as the game can be played in 4K/45 fps using a high-end graphics card, like the RTX 2080 Ti, outpacing all of the consoles. But, if frame rates are just numbers on a screen to you, you can save yourself some cash by grabbing the Xbox One S bundle when it arrives on February 22. 23. New research from DLA Piper has revealed that over 59,000 data breach notifications have been reported across the EU since GDPR went into effect on 25th May 2018. According to the firm's new GDPR Data Breach survey, the UK is in the top three countries with the highest number of data breaches reported. In the UK there were 10,600 breaches reported though the Netherlands came in first with 15,400 breaches followed by Germany with 12,600. Liechtenstein, Iceland and Cyprus experienced the lowest number of reported breaches with 15, 25, and 35 breaches respectively. Cisco backs US GDPR callsSix months on from GDPRGDPR and the case for ethical data handlingWhen the number of breach notifications was weighted against country populations, the Netherlands still came in first, with 89.8 reported breaches per 100,000 people, followed by Ireland and Denmark. GDPR finesDLA Piper's Ross McKean provided further insight on the findings of the survey, saying: "The GDPR completely changes the compliance risk for organizations which suffer a personal data breach due to revenue based fines and the potential for US style group litigation claims for compensation. As we saw in the US when mandatory breach notification laws came into force, backed up by tough sanctions for not notifying, the GDPR is driving personal data breach out into the open. Our report confirms this with more than 59,000 data breaches notified across Europe in the first 8 months since the GDPR came into force." Since GDPR went into effect, 91 fines have been reported but not all of these relate to personal data breaches as several regard other infringements of the EU's data protection laws. Of the companies fined under GDPR, Google was fined the most heavily when the French regulator CNIL fined the search giant 50m Euros over how it personalised the ads shown on its site. 24. EA has surprised many with the sudden announcement of Apex Legends, a new free-to-play battle royale shooter that sees the publisher going toe-to-toe with genre mammoths PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds and Fortnite Battle Royale. Developed by Respawn Entertainment and set in the Titanfall universe, Apex Legends is a squad-based battle royale shooter where teams of three go up against 57 other players to try to gather loot and be the last person (or squad) standing. However, unlike the likes of Fortnite and PUBG, Apex Legends sees players take on one of eight classes, each represented by a unique character. (Imagine Fortnite mixed with Overwatch and you’ll be on the right track.) So, without further ado, let's take a look at everything we know about Apex Legends. Apex Legends news and featureshttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/jhC2CL8qGkMuyDYHm2L3RF.jpg Strategy and communication Apex Legends puts a huge amount of emphasis on strategy and communication among squads, which isn't surprising considering it's an online multiplayer game with a reliance on character classes. Titanfall Apex Legends is set in the Titanfall universe, however reports have begun to pop up that the battle royale title has completely replaced a third Titanfall game – according to Kotaku, Titanfall 3 isn't currently in development and Apex Legends is what we're getting instead. No mechs Players won’t be able to get into any mechs – news that likely ruffle a few feathers of franchise fans. Ditto with other signatures of the series, like wallrunning. Playable characters are called 'Legends' Each has their own play-styles and special abilities, so working out which Legends complement each other in a team is key. Supply ships Apparently these contain the best loot (essentially acting as a supply drop), so naturally they pose the biggest risk. Customization Unlocked as you rank up. Customizations are available for your apparel, weapons and legend banner. Battle Pass Apex Legends Season 1 is due to kick off in March and will give players the opportunity to purchase a Battle Pass to gain access to exclusive cosmetic items earned through gameplay. 25. The iPad mini 5 release date is expected in 2019, and Apple may launch it in the next month or two, according to the latest leaks regarding the long-awaited tablet. It couldn't come sooner for those clamoring for an upgrade to the 7.9-inch iPad mini – it launched back in 2015. It's really been that long since we got the old iPad Mini 4. We're also anticipating an entry-level iPad 9.7 in March or April, so Apple could unveil both new iPads at the same time. How Apple prices them is a big mystery today. The iPad mini 5 will have to come cheap due to its smaller screen size, but it's said to be new features, including Smart Keyboard and Apple Pencil support. Intrigued? Here are all of the major iPad mini 5 rumors so far. Cut to the chaseWhat is it? Apple's next mini tabletWhen is it out? March or April 2019 expectedWhat will it cost? Probably under $329 / £319 / AU$469iPad Mini 5 release dateHottest leaks: March or April anticipatedAll of the recent iPad mini 5 leaks point to a first-half 2019 iPad mini 5 release date, with T3 suggesting that the new tablet could launch in early 2019. Our prediction is for a March or April release date. Why? Well, Apple introduced new iPads in March over the course of the last two years. It could happen again in 2019. Mid-April is when we expect Apple's video streaming service to go live. The company could tie the iPad Mini 5 and video service into one big launch event. Even if the video platform goes live in April, the all-in-one iPad event can still happen in March because Apple doesn't have a video streaming service it's replacing. It can afford a longer lead time vs products in which people will stop buying the old one. Simply knowing that the iPad mini 5 is coming, according to respected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is good enough for most people who have been waiting for four years. iPad Mini 5 priceHottest leaks: A starting price of under $329 / £319 / AU$469The iPad mini 5 price leaves Apple is an interesting quandary. The iPad 9.7 (2018) is already exceptionally cheap (for an iPad) and has a fairly big screen to boot. In fact, the iPad 9.7 is cheaper right now, starting at $329 / £319 / AU$469, while the iPad mini 4 starts at a premium $399 / £399 / AU$579 (albeit that's for a hefty 128GB of storage, which is the only size it's currently sold in). We're left wondering if the iPad mini 5 will cost more than the iPad 2018 (and maybe the iPad 2019), despite the fact that it has a smaller screen size. iPad Mini 5 designHottest leaks: A similar design to the iPad Mini 4A redesigned antennaThere aren’t many iPad Mini 5 design rumors, but we have now seen photos that might show it from the rear. Pictured below, you can see that the main difference to the iPad Mini 4 is that rather than having a big antenna block on the cellular model, there's just a slim line. That improves the look, but might be the only change on the back. Everything else looks similar, including a headphone port on the top edge, speakers on the bottom, and volume buttons on the right. The images also suggest you'll be able to buy it in gold. We would however take these images with a pinch of salt, as this is our first sighting of the slate. Beyond that, there’s a good chance that it will have a lot in common with the iPad Mini 4, which basically means you can expect a slim metal shell. Apple may aim to make it even slimmer and lighter than the 6.1mm thick and 299g iPad Mini 4 though, based on past form. There’s been some suggestion that Apple could even slim it down to just 5mm thick – though the source of this rumor is unclear, and the rumor itself is old, so we’d take it with a huge helping of salt. The iPad Mini 5 is also likely to retain the home button, large bezels and Touch ID, even though the iPad Pro 11 ditched those things. That's because reports suggest this will be positioned as a fairly affordable option, so we'd expect it to have more in line with the iPad 9.7 (2018) and indeed the iPad Mini 4. Having said that, there has been some talk of a 7.9-inch iPad Pro model, perhaps set to be called the iPad Pro Mini, in which case it might get a redesign, but this rumor is very old, so we doubt it. iPad Mini 5 screenHottest leaks: A lower-cost 7.9-inch panelThe only screen rumor so far comes from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who says the slate will have a "lower-cost panel." That likely means an LCD one rather than the OLED panels found on the likes of the iPhone XS, and it also probably won't have fancy features like the 120Hz refresh rate found on Apple's latest iPad Pro slates. One thing we can be fairly confident of is that the iPad Mini 5 will have a 7.9-inch screen. Apple’s stuck with that size on all its mini slates and there’s no room for it to change much without encroaching on either the 6.5-inch iPhone XS Max or the 9.7-inch iPad 9.7 (2018). It’s also likely to stay at a 1536 x 2048 resolution, given that this amounts to a pixel density roughly the same as the iPhone XR and higher than Apple's other slates. Some things might change though, with True Tone for example being a likely addition. This automatically adjusts the color temperature of the screen depending on the ambient light and it’s a feature we’ve seen on other Apple devices. iPad Mini 5 camera and batteryA single lens rear cameraIt may or may not have a flashThe main camera rumor so far comes from the photos above, which show a single lens camera with no flash. However, a case supposedly for the slate has also been photographed and shared by SlashLeaks and ITHome. You can see this below, and note that the case has a cut-out big enough for a flash. We wouldn't count on a flash, as the iPad 9.7 (2018) doesn't have one, but the iPad Pro 11 does, so it's possible. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/E6gAyVWiC7uNxoowyqUQUd.jpg Credit: SlashLeaks / ITHome Our best guess is that it will have the same cameras as Apple's latest budget 9.7-inch iPad, which itself has the same ones as the iPad Mini 4, namely an 8MP f/2.4 rear camera and a 1.2MP f/2.2 front-facing camera. However, there's an outside chance that it will instead get the same cameras as the iPad Pro 11 (a 12MP f/1.8 rear camera with a flash and a 7MP f/2.2 front-facing one), or something even better. There’s no news on what size the battery will be. There’s a 5,124mAh one in the iPad Mini 4 and there’s a good chance Apple will stick with something similar, though if it further slims the slate down some battery size may be sacrificed. iPad Mini 5 OS and powerHottest leaks: An upgraded processorApple’s iPad Mini range doesn’t always have the most cutting edge chipsets, so while the iPad Pro 11 is using Apple's brand-new A12X Bionic chipset, the iPad Mini 5 may well stick with something slightly older, like the A10 Fusion from the iPhone 7 and new iPad (2018), or the A11 Bionic from the iPhone X. The only news on that front comes from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who says the iPad Mini 5 will have "an upgraded processor", which doesn't tell us much, since we'd be very surprised if it didn't. And it may not get any improvement in RAM at all, as the iPad Mini 4 already has 2GB of the stuff – the same amount as the iPad 9.7 (2018). That's less than some Apple devices, but this isn't likely to be a top-end device. Assuming the iPad Mini 5 launches fairly soon it's also sure to run iOS 12. iPad Mini 5 other featuresWe're not expecting many new features from the iPad Mini 5, but it might support the Apple Pencil, given that the iPad 9.7 (2018) does, despite not being a top-end slate. Of course, that's if Apple doesn't decide the Mini 5 is too small to work well with a stylus. There's also a chance that we could get more and better speakers for improved sound, much like the Pro range has, and a Smart Connector for attaching a keyboard, though these additions are probably less likely than Apple Pencil support. It's a real long shot but there's also an outside chance that the iPad Mini 5 will get Face ID. This has been included on the iPad Pro 11, but we expect Apple will keep the feature for its more expensive range of slates. Can't wait for a new iPad?
