Toys R Us Black Friday deals are a great way to get everything from the most basic toy to the most advanced Nerf gun and all the video game products one could need. If it’s a product you play with, Toy R Us probably carries it, and when Black Friday 2017 rolls around, whatever toy you’re looking for will almost surely have its price slashed. Black Friday is a boon for shoppers hoping to save on big ticket or popular items. Aside from the stiff competition from other shoppers both online and in stores, Black Friday is one of the best times of the year to get some serious shopping done. The Toys R Us Black Friday deals for 2017 are sure to be no exception, and will present a good opportunity to get your hands on playthings released within the past year like the Nintendo Switch or bundles with new products like the Xbox One X for the best prices anyone’s seen. Toys R Us ads to leak ahead of timeAt the moment there aren’t any leaked Toys R Us Black Friday ads for the deals in 2017. Expect some to start showing up closer to the end of November. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/GTz8NSZU4pJ7AWsa7cmbtj.jpg These early ads will help you identify some of the deals you want to pounce on quickly. Since stock is generally limited, knowing which deals you want and when they start is the best way to snag them. Early ads for Toys R Us Black Friday deals will also help you compare with deals from other retailers, so you can plan out what to buy where, and determine backup plans if one retailer’s Black Friday deal sells out before you get to it. Sometimes retailers’ advertisements for their Black Friday deals will leak ahead of time, giving everyone plenty of time to figure out where the best deals will be. Before Black Friday: Current Toys R Us dealsToys R Us has wide variety of My Little Pony toys on clearance, with many nearly 50% off. There is a clearance discount on a number of Funko miniatures, keychains, and figures. The discount ranges from 50% to 75% off. Toys R Us has some deals on Nerf N-Strike guns. The Nerf AlphaHawk Blaster is $10 off, bringing the price of this highly rated toy gun to $24. The Nerf HyperFire Blaster is $11 off for a price of $43. A wide range of Nerf Super Soakers are on discount. Plenty of Lego kits also have their prices reduced right now. A kit of Yoda’s Jedi Startfighter is 20% off for $19. The Lego Friends Heartlake Grand Hotel is $36 off for $103. The Lego Minecraft kit of The Cave is over 25% off for $16. The Power Wheels Barbie Jammin’ Jeep Wrangler is $74 off for a total of $225 with free shipping. Expected Toys R Us dealsLook out for Toys R Us deals on big ticket items. Game consoles like the Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch are always hot items around Black Friday, as are all of games for these consoles. This fall will see the release of a lot of major games along with the new Xbox One X, and since new generally doesn’t translate to cheap, Black Friday deals may be the best opportunity to get at these items. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/swfvBoHf6AMxdkzEutrBaX.jpg Black Friday deals in 2016 included console bundles as well as discounts to games on their own, so be on the lookout for these. Popular toy brands like Lego, Disney, Star Wars and Barbie will also likely have special deals. Star Wars, Lego, and Barbie were popular deal brands in 2016, and it’s unlikely that will change for Black Friday 2017. With a new Star Wars movie coming out, expect both Star Wars and Star Wars-branded Lego products to be a hot item. Also expect deals on some bigger items, such a Power Wheels cars, backyard trampolines and other pricey purchases. Anything like this that generally costs a lot will likely have some discount applied to it. Toys R Us Black Friday adviceIn recent years Black Friday has grown to include days leading up to and even the whole weekend following the actual day itself. This means deal hunters need to be on the lookout for deals as early as they can, because there will surely be some big ones that catch us all off guard. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/jybeR6GZh46P2cvbR49ivR.jpg Online shopping may be making it easier to actually shop on Black Friday, both in stores and on the internet, but there’s still serious competition among shoppers. Look for deals early and often if you know what you want to buy. Doing so will not only help you spot the best Toys R Us Black Friday deals as soon as possible, but it will also help you known when the listed deal price is actually a change from the non-Black Friday price. Also think about using a price comparison tool, such as the Pricehawk Chrome extension to see which retailer is offering the best deal on products. Though Toy R Us Black Friday deals will surely be good, other retailers might do even better. Consider a VPN if you plan to do a lot of online shopping. Internet congestion can slow your online shopping to a standstill if a lot of people in your area are doing the same thing. A VPN will let you connect to servers in a different region where congestion might not be a problem, allowing you to snatch up the best Black Friday deals while others stare at a webpage that never loads. If you see the deal you were looking for and it’s in stock, don’t wait around. Inventory is one of shoppers’ biggest enemies during Black Friday. Not much hurts worse than seeing something you want is available, spending a bunch of time thinking about how badly you want it, and then not being able to get it. Don’t delay on the best Toys R Us Black Friday deals this year. http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/digital-home/~4/bsiwcoDcqG0

Kaspersky has kicked off the global launch of a free antivirus program which covers the core anti-malware capabilities, while leaving more advanced features as the domain of its paid-for products. Kaspersky Free will be the bottom tier of the range underneath the likes of Kaspersky Anti-Virus and Internet Security, providing the bare essentials of protection at no cost. That means antivirus for your PC, protection for your browser and email inbox, along with basic self-defence features and anti-phishing measures. And of course you get the benefit of Kaspersky’s highly-rated antivirus definitions. The other added boon is that this is a lightweight app, so has less of an impact on system resources than the premium products, which is always handy. Kaspersky Free already launched with an initial pilot program in Russia, China and some European countries last year, with the full global launch kicking off right now as mentioned, and the app going live for the US and Canada. The software will have a staged rollout worldwide, and unfortunately won’t be coming to the UK and Ireland until October, so we’ve still got a little while to wait this side of the Atlantic. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/bfRxbs2Weko64gUsM6EHX.jpg More the merrierAs Kaspersky observes, having more people using its antivirus will mean more data to work with in terms of constructing defences against the latest malware, and that will lead to better protection for all the company’s users. Incidentally, if you were wondering what sort of features the premium (paid-for) versions of Kaspersky’s software offer over and above core protection, they include the likes of online payment protection, parental control features and built-in VPN functionality. Reports are emerging that Facebook is working on a smart speaker to join the rapidly swelling ranks already filling our homes. According to DigiTimes, unnamed sources from "the upstream supply chain" have confirmed that the speaker is going to be released in the first quarter of 2018. Said to be designed by Facebook’s secretive Building 8, the smart speaker will feature a 15-inch touchscreen manufactured by LG. This screen is apparently the thing that will set Facebook’s offering apart, as it's focusing on image display rather than voice recognition functionality. This makes sense for Facebook, with its mostly visual platform both as a social media giant, and its hugely successful chat app Messenger. This means it will be in direct competition with Amazon’s Echo Show. It could have also been in competition with Samsung’s Bixby speaker, which was rumored to have a screen. It's getting crowded in hereThat was before plans for the Bixby speaker looked like they might have crumbled under the crushing pressure of Amazon’s stronghold on the smart speaker market. It will be interesting to see if Facebook thinks its speaker will be able to stand the pressure. If the reports are right and we aren’t seeing it until next year, it will be entering a market with the Amazon Echo, Dot, and Show, along with Google Home, Apple’s HomePod, and Harman Kardon’s Cortana-powered speaker Invoke. And that’s before you even start considering all the third party speakers that are Alexa-enabled. It sounds like a number of prototypes of the device have already been produced, although we haven’t seen any leaks, specs, or even patents. As we hear more about this we’ll let you know. We heard yesterday that Microsoft was dumping the venerable Paint app from Windows 10 with the incoming Fall Creators Update, but it seems that the nostalgia-sparked outcry at the move may have been premature, as the app will now be relocated in the Windows Store. Come the fall, MS Paint will still be ‘here to stay’ Microsoft noted in a blog post, but rather than a default part of Windows 10, it’ll be moved to the Windows Store where the app will be a free download. So anyone who doesn’t want to let go of the simple graphics app can still enjoy it, even though it won’t be developed any further. Going 3DOf course, it has been superseded by Paint 3D, and much of its functionality has been integrated into this successor. Microsoft reminded us: “Paint 3D – the new app for creativity, also available for free with the Windows 10 Creators Update, will continue to get new feature updates. In addition to the new 3D capabilities, many of the MS Paint features people know and love like photo editing, line and curve tools, and 2D creation are in Paint 3D.” Microsoft Paint has been present in Windows since the very first version of the operating system, so it’s perhaps unsurprising that a good deal of nostalgic fondness surrounds the software. As has been the case since the launch of Windows 10, Microsoft is keen to be seen as listening to its user base, and this is another demonstration of the company taking on board feedback. (Which is all part of laying the ghost of Windows 8 to rest – the OS which most users felt was forced on them, and that ‘nobody’ really wanted but Microsoft pressed ahead with regardless). Roomba maker iRobot has big plans for its automated vacuum bots, but it could involve gathering up something a little more personal than dust and crumbs. iRobot CEO Colin Angle thinks that the future of the company's floor cleaning hockey pucks may lie in using them to map the layout of customers' homes, according Reuters. In the report, Angle claims that while the internet of things boom has resulted in everything from smart thermometers to smart speakers, those devices still have a way to go in terms of spatial awareness of its surroundings. "There's an entire ecosystem of things and services that the smart home can deliver once you have a rich map of the home that the user has allowed to be shared," said Angle. Using regularly updated data from a patrolling Roomba, for example, smart speakers could better adjust to a house's acoustics or a smart thermostat could take your home's square footage into account for more accurate heating or cooling. While promising, some customers may find the data collection less-than-beneficial to their sense of privacy, especially since iRobot appears to be interesting in selling said data to the highest bidder. Roam-baAdvanced models of iRobot's vacuums like the Roomba 980 already use a proprietary technology known as Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping, or SLAM, to get a lay of the land when cleaning house. Angle's vision for this technology is to gather home layout data not just to help the vacuum stay on course, but also sell that data to third parties to improve their own smart appliances. While companies like Amazon, Google, and Apple would likely pay big money for that kind of data, (Amazon just recently made select Roomba devices compatible with its Alexa digital assistant) the idea of a smart vacuum recording floor plan data for sale does raise some concerns over privacy. One of the biggest drawbacks of digitally connected homes is the risk of hacking or otherwise compromising a user's private data. Even if iRobot can promise secure handling of its customer's home layout, the same can't be guaranteed for other companies using the same data for its own devices. That said, Angle adds that if it ever does go into selling collected home data from its Roombas, it wouldn't do so without the customer's permission. While that's a small comfort, we wouldn't be surprised if iRobot's newest initiative has users of its cleaning robots feeling a little dirty. As you may be aware, Chrome has something of a reputation for being a resource hog, and rival Firefox is aiming to hit Google’s browser in this potential Achilles heel with news that it has hugely streamlined memory usage when lots of tabs are open. And we mean lots of tabs. As Mozilla developer Dietrich Ayala explains, he did some testing with Firefox having 1,691 tabs open – yes, 1,691 – and found that while the current version of the browser (54) was very sluggish to start up and used a lot of system memory (unsurprisingly), Firefox 55 (currently in beta testing) and 56 make massive strides on both these fronts. According to Ayala’s benchmarking, Firefox 54 took over four minutes to start up with this massive-multi-tab configuration open in the browser, but with Firefox 55 that time has been reduced to just 15 seconds. Perhaps even more importantly, with all these tabs open Firefox 54 used up just over 2GB of system memory, whereas with Firefox 55, memory usage is less than 0.5GB. That’s obviously a startling improvement at just a quarter of the previous figure. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/5n9hXYqPh2JfrHqkzp88Fm.jpg Image Credit: Dietrich AyalaQuantum tricksAll this is down to the new ‘quantum flow’ project in which Firefox engineers are seriously trying to optimize the browser’s level of responsiveness, clearly with a good deal of success. As mentioned, Chrome has something of a reputation for using up a lot of system resources, particularly with a lot of tabs active, and we’ve certainly experienced our PC having serious issues with large numbers of tabs open. Mozilla will be hoping to attract power users with this freshly streamlined operation and added nippiness, although it isn’t just those of us who have hundreds of tabs open simultaneously who will benefit. Obviously, the overall leanness of memory usage will be a good thing for everyone, even folks who only operate with a small collection of tabs. Firefox does, however, have a lot of ground to make up, only having a 12% slice of the desktop browser market according to Netmarketshare’s figures for June. That’s behind Internet Explorer which is on 16.8%, and Chrome is by far the dominant force with 59.5% of the market. It’s all well and good splashing out for a pre-built PC or putting together a bespoke tower yourself, but what’s the point of sinking all that money into it if you’re not getting the very best performance out of each component? That’s where overclocking comes in. Once thought the pastime of acne-ridden, basement-dwelling tech nerds, overclocking has now become one of the most widely used avenues for getting your PC firing on all cylinders. We’ve included some of the best free pieces of overclocking programs available right now, from mainstream utilities that anyone can pick up and use to complicated tools that enable you to tweak even the smallest of elements in pursuit of even more gaming performance. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/XpjytZKadYHuY5Kqsnopd7.jpg http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/vg6qYbL3nVErzAapgdBRdg.png 1. MSI AfterburnerIntimidated by overclocking? MSI Afterburner makes it easy for even complete beginners to wring extra power from their hardware One of the oldest overclocking tools out, but still one of the best, MSI Afterburner has become a mainstay on the PC overclock scene. So why is it still so popular? Well, for a start it’s very easy to use, making it ideal for newbies and those with an intermediate level of knowledge to push your graphics to their designed limit. Also, unlike EVGA PrecisionX (mentioned below), it supports both Nvidia and AMD processors. The current version of MSI Afterburner includes a still decent number of utilities, including GPU/shader/memory clock adjustment, the power to adjust advanced fan speed, and the ability to tweak GPU voltage control. We also like the bespoke hardware monitor included as part of the interface, which effectively tracks the performance of your rig and shows frame rates, etc while you’re playing a game. Sure, it’s not the most comprehensive of packages, and certainly won’t appeal to the hardcore among us, but it’s still a robust suite that will help transform your games if you’re relatively new to the scene. Download here: MSI Afterburner http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/XpjytZKadYHuY5Kqsnopd7.jpg http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/TVxen7XpaYHrkvgp7MRKGd.png 2. AMD OverdriveIf you have an AMD GPU, this is the only overclocking software you need Unlike MSI Afterburner, AMD Overdrive only supports AMD's own branded GPUs, but it still manages to offer one of the most impressive ways to get your PC running at an invigorated pace. As long as your CPU is of AMD origin (including its chipset), you can start pushing those components like they’ve never been tested before. Best of all, the attractive interface provides convenient access to an impressively in-depth set of tools to make this ideal for both relative newcomers and seasoned overclockers. So what does this brilliant little free overclocking tool offer? For a start, AMD Overdrive enables you to change the clock speed of your RAM and adjust the overall speed of your fans (an incredibly useful utility, especially if you’re currently having overheating issues). The built in status monitor lets you see the state of your processor in real time as you overclock it to the hilt, and with streamlined interface (one that’s markedly improved over the years), you can easily and confidently tweak the voltage or clock speeds by simply moving a slider. Okay, there’s a little more to it than that, but we like how cleanly it can distill its utilities down to simple actions. Download here: AMD Overdrive http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/XpjytZKadYHuY5Kqsnopd7.jpg http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/VtyPQkvrDxMVYUoZsB8fxh.jpg 3. EVGA Precision XFree, convenient overclocking software for Nvidia graphics card owners, with support for up to 10 custom user profiles Easily one of the most popular overclocking tools on the market today, EVGA PrecisionX has become a must for gamers looking to give their rig or gaming laptop a decent push in the hardware performance stakes. Unfortunately, EVGA PrecisionX only works with Nvidia graphics cards (sorry, AMD users) so you’ll need to have something like a GeForce GTX TITAN, 900, 700 or 600 installed. The latest version supports Microsoft DirectX 12 API, as well as enabling you to change your GPU’s clock offset and its memory clock offset. As if that wasn’t good enough, EVGA PrecisionX also presents you with the power to overclock your refresh rate and establish up to 10 individual overclocking setups. You can even seamlessly switch between them at will! This being a free overclocking tool aimed at gamers who want better performance with the minimum of hassle, the freeware offers an easily navigable interface that won’t drown you in too many options or utilities. It might not be as comprehensive as some of the more advanced tools out there, but if you’re looking to squeeze out better clock speeds overall, EVGA PrecisionX is an ideal addition to your machine. Download here: EVGA PrecisionX http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/XpjytZKadYHuY5Kqsnopd7.jpg http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/txtrBzsCgAf37dFZsF4wg.png 4. CPU-Z and GPU-ZTwo free programs that will give you an in-depth look at your hardware, helping you see where there's room for improvement Not all free overclocking tools give you the kind of data you really need to see where you machine can be tweaked or adjusted. That’s where tools like CPU-Z and GPU-Z come in, offering an in-depth look into exactly how your PC or laptop is performing. CPU-Z enables you to track processor name and number details, determine codenames, identify processes, packages, cache levels and more. It can test the performance of your mainboard and chipset, as well as instantly bringing up memory types, sizes, timings and module specifications (SPD). It can even offer real-time measurements of each core's internal frequency and memory frequency. Then there’s GPU-Z, which supports Nvidia, AMD, ATI and Intel GPUs (so you’ll definitely have a card that’s compatible). The free tool displays adapter, GPU and display information, and provides all the information you’ll need for overclock, default clocks and 3D clock shenanigans. Both GPU-Z and CPU-Z work brilliantly alongside all of the overclocking tools in this list, so grab them both and take a peek deep inside your PC. Download here: CPU-Z Download here: GPU-Z http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/XpjytZKadYHuY5Kqsnopd7.jpg http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/eJXxD2Fe96iFrMFe3TezaE.png 5. SetFSBOne for the experts, SetFSB lets you tinker with your PC's front side bus We’ve shown you some of the most popular tools and utilities in the world of overclocking, but what if you’re a seasoned PC builder who wants to squeeze every ounce of juice your machine has to offer? Sounds like you need something in-depth and comprehensive that’s been designed with overclocking pros in mind – say hello to the brilliant little tool that is SetFSB. Unlike some other overclocking tools, SetFSB is all about making adjustments to your system's front-side bus (FSB), which connects the CPU to the main memory. Its speed is measured in MHz and can vary from 60 to 400 (it can go higher if you’re lucky/slightly mad), so the higher the speed, the better the performance. Think of it as plugging yourself directly into the Matrix. One quick word of warning, though. SetFSB is not for the faint of heart and should only really be used if you’re an experienced PC tinkerer and overclock pro. You’ll need a strong knowledge of the limits of your motherboard and CPU before tinkering with its settings, otherwise you could end up cooking your machine due to the unbridled precision at your fingertips. We’ve talked a lot about the smart new features coming with the Fall Creators Update, but it has just emerged that Microsoft is cutting some of Windows 10’s capabilities with the upgrade, too, and that includes the likes of Microsoft Paint and Outlook Express. As Microsoft explains in a support post, some of these features are being completely removed, while others have been marked as ‘deprecated’, meaning they aren’t being developed at all anymore and will be removed in a future version of Windows 10 (i.e. they’re effectively dead, just not buried, as it were). As mentioned, Microsoft Paint, the simple graphics app which has been a part of Windows since the very beginning, will be dumped. Of course, that’s mainly because it’s been superseded by Paint 3D, but still, some folks might shed a nostalgic tear over the lightweight program. Living on the EdgeOutlook Express also gets the push with Microsoft explaining that it is non-functioning legacy code, and the Reader app is gone – mainly because in the latter case it’s been integrated into the Edge web browser. Screensaver functionality has been removed from Themes, and it’s deprecated elsewhere (such as in the Control Panel). Also, the 3D Builder app is no longer installed by default in Windows (although you can still grab it from the Windows Store should you wish). There are a multitude of other capabilities being dropped: for example, the use of the Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit (EMET) will be blocked (Microsoft suggests that Windows Defender Exploit Guard’s exploit protection feature should be used instead). For the full list of cuts, check here. It’s also worth bearing in mind that while it hasn’t been dropped, we recently heard that Microsoft’s smart Timeline feature, which was originally planned to be part of the Fall Creators Update, won’t be ready in time. It will be in a future update though (the first one of next year, almost certainly). Lest we focus all our attention on what won’t be in the next major update, you can check out all the new goodies Microsoft is bringing to Windows 10 this fall right here. Want a Windows 10 notebook? When Apple launched the game-changing iPhone, many people in the business world – including Microsoft's CEO at the time, Steve Ballmer – sneered at it. It didn't have a keyboard, was expensive, and didn't even have 3G in its original form. A lot has changed since then, and the numerous updates and tweaks that Apple has made and apps that have been released have turned it into the perfect on-the-go smartphone for business. The App Store is the main driver behind the surge in productivity on Apple's mobile devices, but it has become very crowded – more than 2 million iPhone apps at the last count – and finding exactly the right apps can be difficult. Which is exactly why we've compiled this list of the brightest and best business apps for the iPhone, including email, messaging and other productivity apps. Want Apple's latest and greatest? Check out TechRadar's iPhone 7 reviewSince Microsoft reluctantly brought the Office suite – Word, PowerPoint, Excel, OneNote, and so on – to the iPhone (and iPad), the apps have been getting better and better. The suite, which is broken down into separate apps, initially needed an Office 365 account to do many tasks – like editing documents – but that has since changed and Office is now the best way to create, edit, and distribute documents on an iPhone. Everything syncs to the cloud and documents created on a Windows PC or Mac can be opened and edited seamlessly. It's the best of the best for productivity and even beats out Apple's own iWork suite. Get the Microsoft Office suite apps hereFor those who want a more Google-y experience – or, most likely, rely on Google services – the company has a good set of apps for the iPhone which do pretty much what you'd expect. The Google Docs app, which is free and does not require a subscription, can be used to edit, export, and view documents (among other things), making it the perfect way to interact with Google's productivity software. The Docs suite is incorporated into one application which can be used to create word, spreadsheet, or presentation documents. Google has worked hard to make it as smooth and seamless as possible and the results are impressive. Get the Google Docs app hereThe Wolfram Alpha app is a mobile version of the website and it can be used to do almost any task. Unlike Google, which can add, subtract and so on, Wolfram Alpha can work out dates, times, food, complex mathematical equations, the weather and so on. The list is endless. The app costs £2.99 ($2.99 in the US, which is just under AUS$4) – there is also a subscription option which adds extra utilities – and is a valuable asset if you need to quickly work out something obscure, like how many days away a specific date is or, you know, the physical properties of white pine wood! Get the Wolfram Alpha appHaving a dedicated PDF reader can come in handy and Adobe does it best. The Adobe Acrobat Reader app, which is absolutely FREE, can be used to make edits and comments on PDFs, and much more. The software can also be used in conjunction with an Abode account, which adds various high-end features like the ability to export files into different formats. Apple does provide a PDF reader in most apps, such as Mail, but having a third-party app can come in handy if you look at, edit, and receive a lot of them. Get the Adobe Acrobat Reader appSpeaking of PDFs (see the previous page), one of the iPhone's biggest flaws is not being able to create them from an image. Luckily, Genius Scan – another free app – has you covered. The app has various different options and offers guidance on the best settings – camera position, lighting, and so on – for creating crystal clear PDFs, which can then be sent via text, email, or another messaging app, or exported to Dropbox, Evernote, Google Drive, or elsewhere. And Genius Scan can also organise PDFs within the app by tags, titles, and so on, making it ideal for creating and then storing large volumes of documents. Get the Genius Scan appAccording to Google, Gmail now has more than 1 BILLION active users! There's no doubt about it - Gmail is a goliath. Apple does offer support for the service in its own Mail app, but many users like having the Google-made app itself installed – mainly because it comes with a number of considerable added benefits. The biggest advantage of using Google's own app is that it integrates directly with other Google services, like Docs or Calendar. Invitations can be answered right within the app while Google+ posts become interactive inside Gmail. The app has the full range of achieving, tagging, labelling and categorisation features you'd expect, and is quite simply much better than Apple's built-in client. Get the Gmail app for your iPhoneSlack, the enterprise messaging app, has over three million daily active users, and is spreading to more and more workplaces around the world as companies move past email, which is now seen as slow and hierarchical, for a friendlier solution. Having Slack on the iPhone is a big bonus and can help with staying in touch on the move, which is essentially what the app is designed to do. Private and team chats are kept intact, notifications sync between devices, and even the read messages go across, which is especially useful if your team works around the globe and you often wake up to hundreds of new missives. Get the Slack appMailChimp is useful for anyone who wants to distribute an email newsletter to a number of people. The service, which launched in 2001, sends billions per month on behalf of its users and is free for anyone who doesn't have a massive mailing list. The iPhone app, which is a free download, does many of the same things as the desktop client but in a miniature format. Lists can be checked, created, edited and emails sent to recipients. Analytics for emails – who opened it, where, and so on – can also be viewed, giving valuable insights on-the-go. For those who manage a mailing list via MailChimp, the iOS app is a good thing to have installed on your device. Get the MailChimp appGood to-do list apps are in high demand as the iPhone becomes more and more ingrained into our daily lives. Setting a reminder for long- or short-term goals, tasks, and objectives is an easy way to keep track of everything. Apple recently beefed up its iOS-based offerings with a new Notes app, which features tick boxes, and a refreshed Reminders app. While these two efforts are good they don't come anywhere near Things 3, which has apps across the iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Things is, essentially, the king of all to-do apps with a list of features that is too lengthy to go into fully, but starts at simple cross-device syncing and ends somewhere around creating tasks that are labelled and repeat every other week. For people with lots to do, Things can't be beaten. Get the Things 3 appSaving articles for offline use is handy in so many ways. Commuting, for example, is far more tolerable with a lengthy piece from The Atlantic, Financial Times, London Review of Books, or any other publication that is saved offline and therefore not subject to a spotty internet connection. Pocket can also store videos and has the ability to sync, tag, and search the full text of any article if you get the monthly subscription option. While Pocket may not be a business app in the truest sense of the word, it's a valuable addition to any iPhone and makes the commute – or any other travel time, or perhaps your lunch break – much more interesting. Whether you're asking how many cups there are in an ounce, or the capital city of some far flung country, Amazon's Alexa voice assistant, as found in its Echo speakers and Fire tablets, is surprisingly adept at reciting the information you need. But with the launch of the Echo Show, the screen-packing variant on the smart speaker range, it's now got to make that information visual too. Amazon may have found the answer in its latest purchase, Graphiq. Picked up for around $50 million back in May but only coming to light now, according to LA Times, the company makes interactive visualisations based on a user's searches, with a deep knowledge graph tapping into many corners of the web. Showing what you needWhile neither company has spoken widely on the details of the purchase, it seems a perfect match for the audio-driven capabilities of Alexa. Graphiq's ability to pair a search with a visual breakdown of facts and info makes it well suited to an Amazon range increasingly pairing audio feedback with visual cues. The potentially interactive nature, if converted into Alexa's new card format, would allow Amazon to dig deeper into a user's tastes too, watching the tangents they follow to better serve products of interest up for purchase. Graphiq's product comparison capabilities would be particularly useful here. Graphiq has more than 100 employees, the expectation now being that many will transition over to Alexa projects. After numerous reports that Samsung is developing an Amazon Echo competitor equipped with the company's own Bixby voice assistant, a new source has claimed that the plans have now been dropped. Speaking to the Korea Herald the unnamed source said, "Samsung currently does not view Al speakers as marketable, as the global market is already dominated by unbeatable Amazon and the Korean market is too small to make profits." Earlier this week, Samsung rolled out Bixby to English-speaking markets for the first time, suggesting that the voice assistant has a future, just not necessarily in the home as a smart speaker. A crowded marketIn SmartThings, Samsung already has a robust smart home ecosystem, but it appears this is not enough to give it the confidence to take on Amazon. Amazon Alexa already has a marketplace of 10,000 skills, allowing it to interface with everything from robot vacuum cleaners, to routers. It will be tough for any smart speaker to catch up with Amazon's hefty lead, and it looks like Samsung doesn't think the fight will be worthwhile. Via TheNextWebWhich is the best smart speaker? Microsoft has unveiled a sleek smart thermostat called GLAS that's backed by its Cortana digital assistant. This is Microsoft's first-ever smart thermostat, and it looks incredibly promising – not to mention utterly gorgeous – based on a teaser video Microsoft released on YouTube. Made by Johnson Controls, a multinational corporation that invented the first electric room thermostat, GLAS not only taps into the power of Cortana but also Windows 10 IoT Core and Azure Cloud. GLAS senses when you're in a room to adjust the atmosphere accordingly. It monitors indoor and outdoor air quality and provides information on your energy usage and habits. And if a quick glimpse from the video is to be trusted, you can also check and update your calendar using GLAS. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/Rtdm9mwGu89cuDgsGPZwiJ.jpg All of the information on Microsoft GLAS is displayed on a translucent touchscreen, and you can speak directly to the wall-mounted device, uttering commands to Cortana. Microsoft's video suggests the thermostat is meant for homes, businesses, doctors offices and just about anywhere else you can imagine a smart thermostat being put to use. Smart 'stat of tomorrow? We're still missing critical GLAS details such as how much it costs and when it will release. We've asked Microsoft for this information, and we'll update this story when we hear back. The smart thermostat space has been dominated by the likes of Alphabet's Nest, but Microsoft's first foray has a ton going for it, including a gorgeous design and all the heft of Microsoft's intelligent software and cloud systems behind it. GLAS joins the Invoke speaker as a Cortanta-powered device for the home. Made by Harman Kardon, Invoke is due to release in the fall, but it's just part of a grander scheme for Cortana in the home, which GLAS seems a key part of. As tech companies jostle for space in our homes, Microsoft is perhaps taking a smart tact by forgoing a smart speaker like Google Home, Amazon Echo and Apple HomePod. http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/digital-home/~4/I541mF7a_js

Avast, the biggest antivirus company outside China, has just announced its purchase of Piriform, creator of the enormously popular system optimization tool CCleaner. CCleaner has over 130 million users worldwide, on both Android and Windows, and is a powerful new string in Avast’s bow. “We see many commonalities between CCleaner and Avast, allowing for great new products for our user bases,” said Avast’s CEO Vince Steckler (pictured above) in a press release. “Avast and CCleaner are the top two downloaded products on popular download sites. They are both known by advanced users as focused on performance, so we believe there will be a great interest from our CCleaner customers in using Avast security products and vice versa.” Safe and secureIt’s not the only major purchase Avast has made recently. Last year, Avast bought rival PC security firm AVG, bringing 400 million new users under its wing. Don’t worry if you rely on CCleaner to keep your PC running smoothly, though – we don’t anticipate any changes to Piriform’s winning formula any time soon. After its acquisition of AVG, Avast pledged to continue supporting its software and, true to its word, it’s kept the two firms’ antivirus suites running in parallel. We predict it will let Piriform continue the good work, even if it integrates some of CCleaner's features features into its own programs. Back at it’s annual I/O developer conference in May, Google let slip that its Google Home smart speaker would finally be making its way Down Under, with the search giant announcing that Australians would be able to lay their hands on one by the middle of the year. Well, mid-year has well and truly arrived and so has Google Home, with the AI assistant reaching Australia just nine months after it was launched in the US. Home works much like Amazon’s Alexa (which is yet to be launched in Australia), Apple’s Siri on iOS or indeed Google’s own Assistant on Android devices. Owners can speak the “OK, Google” activation phrase and request to have music play around the house, to be read the latest news updates – both local and international – to get live traffic updates for their daily commute, and truly lazy/smooth Home-owners can even have it dim their lights for them. Starting July 20, the voice-activated smart speaker will be available alongside Google Wifi, the internet giant’s new mesh-networking system. “OK, Google, where can I find some Fosters on tap?”The Aussie version of Google Home comes with a Google Assistant that speaks with an Australian accent and is capable of understanding proper ‘Strayan speech when spoken to. Google has even added some quintessentially Aussie tricks to the smart speaker’s repertoire that are just waiting to be discovered. If you’ve got a large family, up to six people with a Google account can connect to a single device and it should be able to tell each user’s different voice. So if mum asks, “OK, Google, how do you make avocado toast,” followed by nana saying, “OK, Google, play Will I Am’s latest song,” Google Assistant will be able to tell who’s who. If you’re using a Chromecast, Google Home will also be able to turn on your TV and start streaming Netflix or Stan, on request. And Google Home should be able to fit in with any home’s decor, with a customisable base. Google Home will be available online directly from the Google Store, as well as from JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman, OfficeWorks, The Good Guys, Telstra, Optus and the Qantas Store for $199 starting July 20. If you thought Facebook was running out of ways to help you bombard your friends' News Feeds, think again. It appears the social media giant is testing out a new feature for its mobile app that allows you to make your own GIFs, according to The Next Web. Found in the upper portion of the app's camera, the GIF maker seemingly allows for short, looping video that can be augmented with effects and captions. It appears the GIF-making feature is not available to all users at this time, suggesting those who currently have their hands on it are part of a small test or the update is rolling out slowly. Additionally, it's suspected that Facebook's newest trick will roll out primarily to iOS devices before making its way to Android. We've asked Facebook for more information and will update this story as new details emerge. Though the new GIF-making feature hasn't been confirmed yet, we still look forward to the day we can resume posting short, looping posts for our Facebook feed — things just haven't been the same since Vine shut down, you know? Evolution invites you to construct simple stick creatures, then leave them to their own devices and let them learn how to walk. You can play it in your browser, but if you want to save your creations you'll need to download the desktop version (available for Windows and Mac). Create joints, then link them with bones, then connect muscles to the bones. Once you think you have something worthy of the gift of life, select how many of the creatures should be in each generation, select an action (running, jumping, obstacle jump or climbing), then click Evolve. At first, your poor creatures will probably collapse in an undignified heap, but the most successful member of each generation will be used to spawn the next, and after several iterations hopefully they’ll evolve into something capable of locomotion as they learn how to use their muscles to best effect. My creature – a hideous tangle of muscle and bone – began by flailing and twitching like a stick man wrapped in a bungee cord, but eventually developed a kind of bouncy walk, using momentum from its horrible limbs to propel itself forward. Nothing as co-ordinated as actually walking, but satisfying nonetheless. It’s been a couple of years since the Amazon Echo was first released in the US, and it makes sense that Amazon would have started to prepare a follow-up. Sure enough, we’ve heard reports of the company doing just that. According to a source, Amazon is preparing to release the new speaker later on in 2017, handily beating Apple’s own smart speaker, the HomePod, to market. Details are scarce on the new speaker, but we’ve collected everything we know together on this page, which we’ll be constantly updating as new information becomes available. Cut to the chaseWhat is it? A follow up to 2014’s Amazon EchoWhen is it out? ‘Fall’ - that’s roughly September to December for non-US folksWhat will it cost? Likely similer to the current Echo’s $179.99/£149.99 price pointWhat will it be called? We’re going to be really boring here and predict that the new Amazon Echo will be called the Amazon Echo once more or, at a push, the Amazon Echo (2nd Generation). Our reasons for this have to do with how Amazon has handled the naming of its TV streaming boxes. The Amazon Fire was first released in 2014, and the hardware was upgraded to offer 4K in 2015. However despite this upgrade, the hardware was still sold under the name ‘Amazon Fire’. Amazon has also done the same thing with the Amazon Fire Stick, whose name has remained consistent despite the addition of the Alexa remote and the upgrading of its internals. However, the speaker might end up being called the Amazon Echo (2nd generation) because this is the name scheme that’s been followed by the Amazon Echo Dot, which received a hardware upgrade that added a couple of extra buttons to its top. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/kJco9kRM9aBySDtMf3aMBX.jpg What features will it have?According to Engadget, the 2nd Gen Echo will feature a number of acoustic upgrades. While the original Echo had just one tweeter and one woofer, the new speaker will have multiple tweeters, which should provide a decent boost to its audio quality if they’re well implemented. Its microphones will allegedly also see improvements, although it’s not yet clear whether these will be achieved through hardware or software upgrades. The focus of these improvements around audio quality suggest that Amazon has been rattled by the sonic chops of Apple’s recently announced HomePod. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/ZmYde4GqWuLt9EJyXnnKFD.jpg What will it look like?According to Engadget’s source the speaker will ditch the black plastic outer shell that can be found on both the existing Echo and Echo Dot in favor of a cloth design more similar to the HomePod. The speaker will allegedly also be shorter and slimmer than its predecessor, and will have a size similar to “three or four Echo Dots stacked on top of each other”. When the Google Home launched, Google made the speaker’s appearance customisable with removable speaker grills. It would be great if Amazon adopted a similar approach, which would allow us to make our own choice about the speaker’s color. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/h5tu6kCe5Z5kXgYqBCQPsT.jpg What we'd like to seeThe Amazon Echo speaker is a great piece of kit, but that doesn't mean it's perfect. Here are all the improments we'd like a second generation of the speaker to make. Better connectivity with external speakers Until recently, the biggest advantage Google Home had over the Amazon Echo was its ability to show content on nearby TVs and stereos through its Chromecast integration. However, recently similar functionality was added to the Amazon Echo to allow it to control playback on Amazon Fire devices. That said, the Amazon Echo could still use similar functionality when it comes to playing music on external speakers. At the moment you can connect the Echo to external Bluetooth speakers, but once you’ve done so the speaker plays all its audio through the external speaker. We’d like this functionality to be more versatile. It would be great to have the option of only playing music through the external speaker, with Alexa’s voice only being played through the speaker itself. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/3f433b2889ba776b08b515c3343310ce.jpg Giving Alexa the ability to ask follow-up questions Although this would require an update to Alexa rather than the hardware it lives on we’d also like to see the voice assistant get better at asking clarification questions. Too often we find that Alexa will get confused if we don’t say an entire command correctly; in the future it would be great if it was able to clarify words that it didn’t hear. On a related note, our own Echo is now connected to a number of devices with similar names. It would be great if Alexa were better at telling the difference between them, so that we don’t have to resort to increasingly complex names for our smart home gadgets. Better skills that are easier to find Amazon has done a good job at building up the amount of Alexa skills on its store, but many of the skills are clunky and badly designed. Worse still, it’s very difficult to find the skills that are actually any good because the store isn’t very easy to navigate. For future Echo’s, Amazon should re-think how it approaches the skills store. A redesign feels necessary to allow good skills to be more easily located, and it might even be worth Amazon allowing developers to charge for skills, to make it more profitable for developers to invest in developing high quality skills. One of Google Home's big advantages over the Amazon Echo is its integration with Chromecast devices, which allows you to ask the speaker to play audio or visual content through TVs and stereos with the applicable hardware attached. Now the Amazon Echo is getting similar functionality, but for now it's only going to work with Sony TVs equipped with Android TV. Available commands include turning the TV on and off, changing channels, controlling the volume, and switching inputs. No match for castingIt's a decent list of commands, but it doesn't quite match up to what Google Home is capable of. Using Google's speaker, users can request specific content from video streaming services to play on a screen. For example you could ask, "Ok Google, play Better Call Saul from Netflix on Living Room TV". However, Google Home does not currently offer any granular control of your TVs settings; so it looks like the two voice assistants have different strengths and weaknesses for now. What's surprising is that this Sony TV functionality has come to Alexa before Google Home considering that the TVs have Google Cast functionality built in. But with the smart speaker seeing rapid development, including the recent addition of multiple user support, here's to hoping it gets similar TV controlling functionality soon. Amazon is reportedly developing the next generation of its Echo smart speaker, and this version will be trimmer and all around better than the current Amazon Echo. What's more, it could give Apple HomePod a run for its money. A source who saw a working model of this so-called Amazon Echo 2 spilled the details to Engadget, and the smart speaker sounds to be a significant upgrade over the two-year-old Echo currently on the market that also comes in a smaller package. In addition to more tweeters to produce better sound - a knock against the Amazon Echo now is that it's audio quality is sub-par - this new model will apparently shave down the Echo's (admittedly already slender) design. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/ZmYde4GqWuLt9EJyXnnKFD.jpg Apple HomePodThe Amazon Echo 2 will look as if a few Amazon Echo Dot speakers stacked together, have rounded edges and, interestingly, ditch the plastic coating for a cloth-like encasement, according to the source. This last detail may be an inspiration taken from the Apple HomePod, which has a soft fabric finish. The new Echo's design also sounds similar to the squat look of Apple's first smart speaker, which was unveiled last month. Price, set, match? The mics of the Amazon Echo 2 are also reportedly undergoing a redesign, which presumably means more accurate readings of voice commands. Though Engadget's source said some design features could change, this sounds to be a fairly close representation of what Amazon has planned for final release. The new Amazon Echo release date is said to be in the fall, which would give it a jumpstart on the Apple HomePod, which won't release until December. It's unlikely the Amazon Echo 2 will begin to touch Apple HomePod's price of $349, considering the current Amazon Echo price is only $179.99 / £149.99. Google Home, another sleek and small smart speaker, costs $129 / £129, though it's currently on sale for $99. But it seems that Apple's target competitor might not be the Echo at all: Apple HomePod is likely to compete more closely with Sonos speakers at its price point and with its features. But the comparison to other smart speakers for the home is unavoidable, and one that could prove difficult for Apple to overcome. It's not impossible, mind you, but customers may be left with a choice between better sound and lower prices, and as smart speakers improve on all fronts, the HomePod could find itself with nowhere to go. Amazon just wrapped up its big Prime Day sale where it took 50% off the Amazon Echo price. Could this have been a way to clear out inventory before a fall Amazon Echo 2 release? We can't say for sure, but let's just say the smart speaker stars are starting to align around Amazon introducing an upgrade soon.
