http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/mobile_phones/Android/KitKat/Android_KitKat-470-75.jpgGoogle has dropped a major hint that the next incremental update to its Android KitKat mobile OS will arrive imminently. The firm has issued an update for its Google Edu Device Set-Up app, which is geared at helping schools set up Android tablets for students. While it reveals nothing about the nature of the update, the app does promise support for the as-yet-unannounced Android 4.4.3 update. Just last week the Sprint network in the United States also appeared to confirm an update was on the way, but has since removed any references to it. Bug swatterThe Android 4.4.3 update isn't expected to furnish smartphone and tablet users with any new features, but it should nuke a number of bugs and bring the requisite performance enhancements. Some using the current version of Android KitKat (4.4.2) have been experiencing random reboots, issues with Bluetooth connectivity and problems with automatic connections to Wi-Fi. We'll let you know for sure when the update drops. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/other/Samsung_Fire-470-75.jpgA fire at a Samsung IT building in Korea caused several Samsung mobile and Smart TV services to misfire this weekend. The blaze, which is now under control, saw many users experience error messages with apps and services on Saturday and some of Sunday, lasted several hours, but normal service has now been resumed. The fire also knocked out Samsung's official website, as well as apps for smartphones, tablets, televisions and Blu-ray players. Fortunately, despite some scary-looking photos and video footage, there were no fatalities. Worldwide outagesPerhaps worryingly for Samsung, is the effect the blaze had on so many services in so many territories, with users in the US, UK and Europe among other places taking to Twitter to report errors. The firm has released a statement to confirm everything is up and running again and says it plans to investigate the cause of the fire. You can see footage of the blaze in the video below. Nike has moved to calm reports it plans to ditch its completely FuelBand wearables division following layoffs this week. A report on Friday claimed the sportswear giant had fired the majority of staff in charge of developing the fitness wristbands, in order to focus solely on software. While Nike confessed to a "small number" of layoffs, the firm says it remains committed to selling existing products and developing the accompanying apps. "The Nike+ FuelBand SE remains an important part of our business We will continue to improve the Nike+ FuelBand App, launch new METALUXE colours, and we will sell and support the Nike+ FuelBand SE for the foreseeable future." Warning sign?Despite Nike seemingly quelling the reports, the statement mentions nothing about the development of new hardware, only a desire to continue selling the current generation devices. Judging from the statement, it appears the prospect of a third-gen FuelBand device may be distant one. Nike's potential departure from the emerging wearables market, while it is still relatively young, could act as a rude awakening for those firms betting the family farm on the sector exploding. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/logos/Beats%20Music-470-75.jpgFledgling streaming service Beats Music has issued an update to its iPhone app, allowing prospective users to subscribe through the iTunes ecosystem. With Beats struggling somewhat to establish itself among the streaming elite, the firm has made the decision to sacrifice 30 per cent of the subscription fee on those coming through iTunes. As a rule, Apple requires that cut for all in-app purchases and Beats seems to have admitted defeat in the uphill struggle to grow significantly without the ease offered through iTunes. The company's CEO Ian Rogers told Recode that working within iTunes is simply "what you have to do if you want subscribers." He added: "If you don't care if people subscribe or not, and you've got a free product, maybe then you wouldn't do it." Can Beats compete? The move will raise doubts over the initial uptake of the Beats service and its ability to compete with the likes of Spotify, Rdio and Pandora. Rogers said plenty of people are "trying it" and is claiming conversion rate wins from a promotion through the AT&T network in the United States, but it appears there is plenty of hard work ahead. He added: "We've had far more people try the product than projected. Clearly the marketing works. The conversion rate on the AT&T plan is off the charts. It's safe to say the biggest problem is coveting iOS users, and we've just fixed that." http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/internet/Facebook/Facebook_Nearby_Friends-470-75.jpgFacebook has confirmed the data mined through the new Nearby Friends feature may one day be used for advertising and marketing purporses The new tool, which is rolling out to iOS and Android apps in the coming weeks, allows users to share their location with select friends enabling pals to detect when they're in the locale and arrange meet ups offline. At the time of the announcement on Thursday, Facebook made no mention of sharing the data with advertisers, which would have no doubt coloured the reaction to the feature. Belatedly, a Facebook spokesperson has confirmed to TechCrunch: "At this time it's not being used for advertising or marketing, but in the future it will be." Tracking your travelsFacebook is pitching the tool as a valuable new feature for users. It sends occasional notifications informing them how often friends, who've also agreed to be seen, are in the locale. It will also follow users on their travels, allowing friends to pitch in with suggestions or recommendations wherever they roam around the world. Knowing the end goal may be (or always was?) geared towards targeted advertisements may see some users change their views on the feature. Will you be switching on Nearby Friends when it hits your smartphone? Let us know your thoughts below. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/software/facebook_paper_update_1-1-470-75.jpgThose using Facebook Paper on their iPhones are getting a drastically different Facebook experience from everyone else - and it just got better. Facebook Paper update 1.1 just hit the app store, bringing what Facebook said in a Paper blog post are the most requested features. The update adds birthday and events notifications to Paper - users with the latest version can scroll past their notifications to see them. In addition Facebook Paper users can now leave their own photos as comments on friends' posts. More Paper improvementsFacebook Paper's support for Facebook groups has improved as well, with unread counts so users can see which of their groups have new posts. The update also includes improvements to accessibility support, new indications for unread stories, and reliability and speed improvements overall. And Facebook commissioned designer Sharon Hwang to design new covers for articles from Bloomberg News, Mashable, FT, kottke, Fox News, Popular Science, The Hollywood Reporter, Vanity Fair and Hacker News. Work aheadTen weeks after Facebook Paper's launch the social network says users read an average of 80 stories every day across five or six different sections, the most popular being Facebook, Headlines, Tech, Ideas, LOL, and Pop Life. Facebook says more niche sections like Pride are popular as well. "10 weeks have passed since we launched Paper and we want to thank you for being part of our community," the Facebook Paper team wrote in the blog post. "Our vision is to make Paper the best way to experience stories from friends and the world on Facebook. "We know we have work ahead of us—and that's why we appreciate your feedback and support." http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/other/Onetimers/Ubuntu%2014.04%20Trusty%20Tahr%20-%20Nahue%20Fox-470-75.jpgUbuntu 14.04 Long Term Support (LTS) edition has finally arrived bringing new support for high-resolution displays and touchscreens. Codenamed "Trusty Tafr," this release named after a reliable wild goat finally makes Ubuntu scale properly on high-resolution displays. A very important feature in our advancing 2K and 4K world. What's more, the 14.04 update is also the first stable version of Ubuntu made for tablets. It specifically adds some much needed improvements to its touchscreen support for everything from multi-touch trackpads on laptops to commercial tablets. In for the long haulAs a LTS release, Canonical has designed this upgrade for enterprises, adding more stability on top of a few notable features. This release of Ubuntu will also be continuously updated for the next five years. With Windows XP being phased out last week, Canonical is taking the opportunity to push 14.04 to businesses as an affordable replacement for Windows XP. "The 14.04 LTS release offers a solid, intuitive experience which is easy to manage," Jane Silber, Canonical CEO said in a release. "It is a viable and affordable alternative for those organizations considering a switch from Microsoft, and specifically those replacing XP or Windows 7 as they come to the end of life." As such Canonical promises Ubuntu 14.04 LTS provides a seamless migration path from Windows to its platform. The operating system includes compatibility with Windows file formats, browser-based cloud solutions such as Maxthon, and the Microsoft Office-compatible LibreOffice suite. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/software/Apple/iOS%208/iOS_8_Watch_Utiility_screenshot-470-75.jpgWith Apple's annual developer conference quickly approaching, we have little doubt that somewhere in Cupertino there are devices already running iOS 8 - and a new report could very well offer our first glimpse at one of them. PhoneArena today turned up a handful of images allegedly from Apple's forthcoming iOS 8, which will presumably be unleashed in just over six weeks during the iPhone maker's Worldwide Developer Conference in San Francisco. One low-resolution image (shown below) appears to show iOS 8 running on a current iPhone 5S passed along by a generous reader using the screen name "Omar Sharif," which we're pretty sure is not the star of stage and screen who shares the same moniker. The tipster followed up with a trio of screenshots - two from iPhone and one from iPad - which reveal a bevy of icons for new apps that have been widely rumored to be included with the mobile OS release this year. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Apple/iOS%208/iOS_8_on_iPhone_5S_rumor-420-90.jpg Eight is greatAlthough the four images don't immediately stand out as obvious fakes, the inclusion of a so called "Watch Utility" app is likely to raise eyebrows, although others for Healthbook, Preview, TextEdit and Tips fall in line with recent rumors. Also clearly on display is an icon for iTunes Radio, which Apple is reportedly toying with the possibility of turning into a standalone app, rather than part of the existing built-in Music app. Assuming iOS 8 breaks cover at this year's WWDC which kicks off June 2, it's not surprising to see leaked screenshots making the rounds a month and a half early, even at the same time Apple is said to be readying an iOS 7.1.1 bug fix update. Meanwhile, iPhone, iPod touch and iPad users still lingering on iOS 6 have apparently found themselves in the midst of an extended FaceTime outage since yesterday, and the only resolution for now appears to be upgrading to iOS 7.1. Oh, and don't forget to follow the latest on iPhone 6 as well!http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/39846996/sc/5/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/195296641285/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/39846996/sc/5/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/195296641285/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/39846996/sc/5/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/195296641285/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/39846996/sc/5/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/195296641285/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/39846996/sc/5/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/195296641285/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/39846996/sc/5/a2t.imghttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/g_rRnHaTFSU

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/internet/Facebook/Facebook_Nearby_Friends-470-75.jpgFacebook has risked opening up another can of wriggly privacy worms by introducing a new feature which allows users to see which of their pals are nearby. The strictly opt-in Friends Nearby feature will begin rolling out to the firm's iOS and Android apps in the coming weeks, sending users occasional notifications informing them who is close by or on the move. Facebook says the feature may come in handy for those wishing to meet up with pals when they spot them in the area and help them coordinate for concerts, movies and the like. Those opting in will be able to choose which of their pre-selected friendship groups are able to see their location and will be able to switch Nearby Friends off at any time. Two way streetThe feature, which is similar to the Find My Friends tool in iOS, also works the other way, allowing people to track when their friends are out of town, including which city or neighbourhood they are currently in. Facebook says this could be used to send friends recommendations for restaurants and attractions, and also allow users to arrange a meet up with a friend who's currently hanging out where they're heading. Although this feature sure to raise privacy concerns; in order to see each other's movements, both friends must have opted in to Nearby Friends and agree to allow the other to see them. In a blog post product manager Andrea Vaccani wrote: "Sharing your location with Nearby Friends goes two ways - you and your friends both have to turn on Nearby Friends and choose to share with each other to see when you're nearby. Your friends will only be able to see that you're nearby if you share this info with them and vice versa." Will you be opting into Nearby Friends, or are you a little freaked out? Combining a full-sized QWERTY keyboard with a multi-touch trackpad, the All-in-One Media Keyboard is a peripheral perfect for couch potatoes. With it, users can control smart TVs and set-top boxes by clicking and typing from afar. The device connects via radio frequency signals set to an included USB dongle that users can plug into a their smart TV or media streaming box. The RF dongle works with most devices that have a USB HID compliant port, including the Roku 3 and Apple TV, but nothing too small and stick-like such as the Roku Streaming Stick and Google Chromecast. How does it feel?SlashGear got an early hands-on with the keyboard and said that overall, it's a bit mushy. However it has more than a few nice features including a row of media function keys along the top. Along with the usual left and right clickers found underneath the trackpad, there's also an additional left-click on that side of the device for easier navigation. Meanwhile, on the bottom of the keyboard lives a removable battery door hiding two AA batteries and an extra magnetic cubbyhole for stowing the RF receiver. The All-in-One Media Keyboard is compatible with both full and RT versions of Windows 8.1, 8 and 7, along with OS X 10.7 Lion through 10.9 Mavericks. An oddly specific batch of Android - 4.03, 4.12, and 4.2 - are also compatible with the keyboard. It will be available starting tomorrow for US$39 (about AU$41). Now that you have a remote for it, what's the best smart TV money can buy?

It will be available starting tomorrow for $39 (about £23, AU$41). Now that you have a remote for it, what's the best smart TV money can buy?

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/events/Facebook%20Android%20event/HomeApp-470-75.jpgFacebook Messenger being cleaved off from the full Facebook experience and turned into its own app was only the beginning, according to Facebook creator and CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Zucky told The New York Times that his company's Creative Labs is hard at work "unbundling the big blue app." That means building up standalone apps like WhatsApp and Instagram, but also spinning certain aspects of Facebook out into their own services, just like with Facebook Messenger. Recall that Creative Labs is the division within Facebook that recently released Facebook Paper, a very different way to view the social network, and is working on other undisclosed experiments. The long gameZuckerberg said people want separate experiences on mobile, as opposed to the single, all-inclusive desktop site and mobile app that Facebook has started out with. For users a big part of why is being able to control exactly what notifications you receive, he continued. "I think you'll see a combination of us making some of these things that have been products for a while into first-class experiences," he said. "And you'll see us exploring new areas that we felt we didn't have the room to do before." Zuckerberg added that "most" of the new things Facebook is doing won't "move any needles" for a long time in terms of Facebook's overall business, because that business is so large. But that doesn't mean those things - like Paper, or Facebook Home - will never be successful. They just might take three or five years before they reach Instagram levels of success, he said. Nokia Power User has picked up on the scent of a new General Distribution Release 2 version of Windows Phone 8.1 on its way to hardware manufacturers. Supposedly the new software release is adding some oomph to Microsoft's mobile platform with support for 2K display resolutions and Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 805 processor. Prior to this stealthy update, we've seen Windows Phone 8.1 support a maximum display resolution of 1080p and up to a Snapdragon 800 processor as seen on the Lumia 930. And on January 20, there were rumors a Nokia Lumia 1520 Mini would feature a pixel rich 4.3-inch, 513ppi Full HD AMOLED screen. With all the big phone shows and Microsoft Build out of the way, it's anyone's guess when these monster handsets will make it to the real world. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/mobile_phones/Android/Apps/BBC_iPlayer_Android_downloads-470-75.jpgThe vast majority of BBC iPlayer users on Android are now able to download content to watch offline after the corporation updated the app on Tuesday. Following the initial roll out on 11 devices in September last year and a careful expansion since, the Beeb has now announced that all smartphones and tablets running Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and above are in on the act. That means 96 per cent of all current users will be able to grab episodes of Eastenders, Match of the Day, Panorama to view when Wi-Fi connectivity isn't available and without rinsing their mobile data allowance. The updated app is now available to download from the Google Play Store. Testing, testingThe opening up of the feature to practically all users goes against the Beeb's recent policy of testing it on every device before widening availability. As such, with 5,000 phones and tablets now able to access the complete set of features, the Beeb says users of some devices may experience a few bugs. "We believe that the vast majority of devices will enjoy a great video downloading experience. However, with more than five thousand different phone, phablet and tablet models able to install the BBC iPlayer Android app, there are likely to be a number of devices that exhibit bugs concerning download behaviour, wrote senior product manager David Berlin on the BBC Internet blog." According to a tweet sent by Hannah Allen, the head of marketing at OMD UK, her firm was paid a visit by Paul Wright who manages Apple's advertising platform from a London base. She tweeted: "Great to see @paulwright66 back at @OMD_UK to take us through Apple's iAd and iTunes Radio - can't wait for that to hit UK!" Despite calls from fellow Twitter users for her to reveal the precise launch date, Miss Allen is yet to follow up the tweet. The wait goes onThe iTunes Radio launch in the UK has been awaited since Apple rolled out the free, ad-supported streaming platform to US users alongside iOS 7 in September 2013. Apple had pledged an early 2014 launch across the pond, but aside from the occasional appearance on random devices in the UK, it is yet to make it's official bow. Surely now we can't be far away. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/TRBC/Generic/future-data-centre-470-75.jpgFujitsu has developed a new software technology that can perform data searches as fast as 40Gb/s, an important step forward in managing an ever-increasing volume of information. The Fujitsu technology can perform high-speed capture, accumulation and searches at super-fast speeds, thanks to a combination of servers for scalable disk capacity and parallel-input performance, with a stream-analysis unit for sequential processing. As data packets are captured, they are automatically sorted based on search criteria, substantially increasing the pace of searches. Software-based approachThe technique eliminates exclusive access control locks, increases disk read/output performance, and avoids unnecessary copying of data. The result is that huge amounts of information can be accumulated and searched, over a period of many hours, at speeds of up to 40Gb/s. Previous approaches to data searches required specialised network analysis hardware, but Fujitsu's new software-based approach requires only conventional hardware. With companies expected to face a Big Data crisis by 2017, according to Gartner, technologies like this one will have a lucrative customer base. Fujitsu hopes to launch the technology in its fiscal year 2014. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/other/Generics/laptop_outside-470-75.jpgMany businesses are realising the benefits of open source. According to a recent report, up to a third of IT professionals are already using the technology and this figure will grow. Open source is often cheaper, more flexible and easier to manage than its licensed counterparts. If you've got some technical ability, the basics are easy to implement yourself, with a multitude of 'DIY' guides available online. So where is the best place to start? The most well known form of open source is Linux: this could suit SMBs new to the technology, experts agree. And it is possible for SMBs to open source their entire IT environment. Back up, firewall, and security information and event management are ideal areas to open source, according to Dominique Karg, Chief Hacking Officer and Co Founder of AlienVault. "Those are the areas where the cost difference between 'closed' and open source is biggest, and where open source has matured the most," he says. Expert helpIf you have some expertise, implementing open source can be done in house. According to Karg, a skilled SMB CEO could put in basic open source without much technical knowledge. "If you're skilled, set two or three machines aside, along with some backup disks," Karg advises. "Read the manuals, apply the suggested guidelines and learn as much as possible." This approach won't cost anything, Karg says. "What's great about open source is that you can take a peek at the source code to truly understand what it really does; how it works; how it was designed and whether its design matches its intention," he says. But if you don't have the software expertise, you will need a software vendor or consultant to help implement the technology. In this case, Karg advises firms to hire a skilled 'geek' to implement open source tools, "rather than to pay licenses and rely on the commercial support teams". Less confident SMBs should start by getting a consultant, advises CEO of Omnis Systems Paolo Vecchi. This kind of expertise is required because open source software is managed differently to Windows. For example, Vecchi says: "You would never connect a Windows server to the internet - but you would with Linux". Even so, once they are up and running, keeping Linux systems secure is comparatively easier than with Windows. According to Steve Nice, CTO of open source software specialist Reconnix: "While Linux malware does exist, it's only a tiny fraction of what currently affects Windows, so there is much less risk on a day-to-day basis of a system suffering an exploit." Open source products When moving to open source, it's best to start with the basics. To kick off, SMBS could cut costs by switching to one of the free alternatives to Microsoft Office like LibreOffice - which is compatible with both Linux and Microsoft - for example. "If businesses were to change only one software product to an Open Source alternative, LibreOffice would perhaps be the easiest move to make, and one that would see the most obvious savings," Nice says. Vecchi recommends replacing a Windows server with a Linux one; something that staff won't notice in terms of usability. For example, firms can download the all-in-one Linux Collax business server for free. Among its benefits, the server provides security functions such as firewalling and virus and spam filtering. "With a couple of clicks you can use it and it's free for up to five users," says Vecchi. But, Vecchi warns, open source technology still comes with maintenance costs, so it's not entirely free. "For example, [Linux-based operating system] Debian is free but complicated to manage, so you would need someone to help you," says Vecchi. "You have to remember Linux and open source doesn't mean free in terms of not spending money: you need to set it up and maintain it." Vecchi says the standard price for this is around £14 per user per year - which is "less than Google". "You have full control of the data as well," he adds. Meanwhile, another company, ForgeRock offers solutions which support open standards and are designed to be modular and accessible to developers. "Some of the most useful tools include Apache OpenOffice; GIMP - a powerful photo editing tool; and OpenAM - one of ForgeRock's identity relationship management software products, says the firm's VP of Product Management, John Barco. If you're looking to cut costs and increase functionality, open source is the ideal tool. You don't have to move all your applications over; those with some technical knowledge can experiment with 'how to' guides online. It's not a fix-all solution, but it could be the first step towards freeing yourself from the licensing costs that often weigh down smaller firms. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/mobile_phones/ApplevSamsung/appleiphone_samsungs3-470-75.jpgGoogle has done its best to stay out of Apple and Samsung's legal squabbles, but came to the aid of its Android partner in the second patent trial between the rivals, on Friday. The company's VP of Android Engineering Hiroshi Lockheimer took the stand in California to defend copycat allegations from Apple, which claims Samsung stole its ideas. The thrust of the argument is that Google used specific features - like universal search - on devices like the Galaxy Nexus before Apple patented them. "We liked to have our own identity, we liked to have our own ideas," Lockheimer told the court. "We were very passionate about what we were doing, and it was important that we have our own ideas." 'Doing our own thing'"People tend to think of Google as a big company, but we were a small team," he added. "We were autonomous, and the company let us do our own thing." Apple rested its case earlier on Friday. The company is seeking $2.91 billion (£1.73, AU$3.07) in damages from Samsung relating to five patents it claims the Korean firm infringed. Samsung will continue its defence against the allegations on Monday. The case is follows a length battle in front of the same judge in 2012, which saw Apple awards a billion dollars. Ahmed Nefzaoui and Sören Hentzschel, Mozilla representatives have leaked screenshots of Firefox 2.0 on their Twitter accounts. From the looks of it, 2.0 is much flatter yet more vibrant. The translucency, two-tone app colors and lock screen notifications are also immediately comparable to iOS 7 showing that Mozilla is probably looking to woo Apple lovers, but Mozilla may have other features up its sleeves. With Firefox OS, you get an open ecosystem, one where all apps can run on other operating systems and on almost any hardware. Living in harmonyA number of Dropbox features enhance the Dropbox for Business experience, Fushman wrote: "Remote wipe helps protect confidential information, account transfer helps you maintain business continuity, and sharing audit logs let you track how your Dropbox for Business information is being accessed." But it's not all about corporate security and "business continuity" at Dropbox today, as the company also announced Project Harmony. It may sound like an ill-fated hippie commune or a dating website, but it's actually a set of collaboration tools that will let users interact with one another in Microsoft Word, Powerpoint and Excel as if they're using Google Docs. Thanks to Project Harmony documents will sync to the Dropbox cloud, where those with access can edit, chat and collaborate. Basically it brings Microsoft Office to the cloud, though Dropbox has plans to add other applications later, CNET reports. There's no word on availability for Project Harmony unfortunately. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/internet/Facebook/Facebook_on_iPhone-470-75.jpgFacebook has begun alerting some users that it will soon force them to use the company's standalone Messenger app if they want to chat on mobile. "Today we are starting to notify people that messages are moving out of the Facebook app and over to the Messenger app," a Facebook spokesperson wrote in an email to TechRadar. "To continue sending messages on mobile, people will need to install the Messenger app." Referred to as an "update," the change will affect those with an iOS or Android device. Currently, users in a handful of European countries are being notified the switch will take place in about two weeks, but Facebook declined to offer details on a further roll out. However, according to TechCrunch, all Facebook mobile users will eventually be forced to take up Messenger. One is better than twoFacebook's mobile offerings have, for as long as we can remember, included a integrated tab to chit-chat with friends. However, Facebook recently made it so those who had the Messenger app installed were shuttled there when they hit the inside-Facebook messaging tab. Even so, users didn't have to download Messenger if they wanted to. That choice is now being taken out of their hands, though with Facebook's vagueness we don't know when it will reach all users (if at all). Although the move is sure to anger some users, it shouldn't come as a surprise. CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in November 2013 Facebook was planning to take messaging out of the main Facebook app. Zuckerberg went on to lay out the central reason given today by Facebook's spokespeople; the company can now focus on making Messenger as good a service as possible without having to deal with two separate messaging experiences. Users will receive multiple notices before the changes go into effect, Facebook informed us. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/internet/Google/Google_Heartbleed-470-75.jpgIt's likely to be a long week for IT professionals dealing with the aftermath of Heartbleed, the OpenSSL security flaw discovered earlier this week - but Team Google appears to have a good handle on it for now. The Google Online Security Blog today announced patches to many key Google services affected by Heartbleed, the security bug discovered Monday that potentially allows for theft of data typically protected by SSL/TLS encryption. "We've assessed this vulnerability and applied patches to key Google services such as Search, Gmail, YouTube, Wallet, Play, Apps, and App Engine. Google Chrome and Chrome OS are not affected," explained Google Product Manager Matthew O'Connor in a blog post Wednesday. The company's security experts are still working to patch "some other Google services" affected by CVE-2014-0160, the official name for the OpenSSL flaw which has been dubbed "Heartbleed." Android immunityGoogle's security team also made it clear today that the Android operating system is largely immune to Heartbleed, with the exception of Android 4.1.1, although the company is already distributing a patch to partners for that version. Google Cloud Platform and Google Search Appliance customers are also having Heartbleed purged from their services, with an update on the latter expected to arrive within 24 hours for enterprise customers. Security engineers are also currently busy patching Cloud SQL, with fixes expected to roll out Wednesday and Thursday; in the meantime, Google has posted instructions on how to whitelist IP addresses to prevent unknown hosts from accessing them. Although many companies are encouraging users to reset their passwords, security experts recommend waiting until fixes are in place to eradicate the Heartbleed flaw; the status of any domain name can be checked absolutely free from the Qualys SSL Labs website.
