PerLod
I know there are several options, I've read several posts here, but I want to know about your experiences. What VPS are you currently using and how is it working out for you?
Matthew Miller
I have been running a small KVM instance for a side project and a personal site, and it has been fine for my needs so far. What I would pay attention to is the provider's network quality and how quickly support responds, since those tend to matter more than raw specs once things are running. I would also check whether they offer snapshots and easy backups, as that has saved me trouble before. Which use case are you planning for, a single site or several services? Matthew Miller
I'm running a single KVM box for a personal site plus a couple of background services, and the snapshot and backup options have been the deciding factor for me too. Network quality is the other thing I'd weigh heavily, since a cheap plan with shaky routing gets frustrating fast. If you're only hosting one site, even a modest instance will likely be plenty, but if you plan to add several services later, start with more RAM than you think you need. What kind of load are you expecting on the site?
Ethan Lewis
The point about RAM is worth stressing. I have seen small services creep up in memory once a second process, cron job or database gets added, and then the instance starts swapping. For a single site the modest plan holds up, but for several services I would rather pay for headroom up front than migrate later. On network quality, how do you two usually test routing before committing, just ping and traceroute from a few locations, or do you look for a trial period? That seems the harder part to judge from a spec sheet.
