The best thing you can do is read reviews and pick a host that meets your requirements as well as achieves a high level of service.

Hi, I just now saw this.  For a Wordpress site the first thing you'll run into is using up all your RAM.  This is because wordpress uses very little resources by not running a lot in the background, but then runs every script on each page load.  So the more users, the more times the scripts run.  During heavy traffic, these scripts eat up a lot of RAM.

So what I recommend for Wordpress is to start with a VPS that has the most RAM that you can budget for.  When budgeting, you may want to factor in about $10/month for cPanel licensing.  cPanel takes the all-purpose server and makes it ideal for web hosting.  Alternatively, you can use a free solution like CentOS Web Panel.

From there just install Wordpress, your theme, and any add-ons.  If you notice the site acting sluggish, you can upgrade at any time - which is why I recommend a VPS. Good luck and let me know if you have any questions! :)
