  1. The latest camera sales data released by BCN, a Japanese retail research firm, has revealed that Sony is Japan’s market leader when it comes to full-frame mirrorless cameras. The report (first discovered by Canon News) from BCN compares retail sales of the top five selling full-frame mirrorless cameras in Japan and the Sony Alpha A7 III emerges the clear winner. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/VtbSLGucVTvLSfCfTR6WSS.jpg Image: BCN The sales figures in this report are from March and early April 2019 and show that the Canon EOS RP had a pretty good start when it first launched. However, a month after its release, the EOS RP sales numbers plummeted, giving the Sony Alpha A7 III the opportunity to overtake. And in that time, the latter outsold not just the EOS RP, but the Canon EOS R, the new Nikon Z7 and its more affordable Z6 sibling combined. Best mirrorless camera: 10 top models to suit every budgetBest beginner mirrorless camera: 10 budget options for new usersBest Sony lenses: top 14 optics for Sony mirrorless camerasSteep descentWe found Canon’s statistic to be a little surprising as, previously, the company’s mirrorless M-series snappers (like the EOS M50) have proven successful in their home country of Japan. It’s also interesting that the EOS RP sales slumped so dramatically as it is a more affordable alternative to the Sony Alpha A7 III. However, in terms of specs, the A7 III outdoes the EOS RP. BCN, though, suggests that it’s the lack of native lenses for the Canon R-series cameras that has led to the slump. Currently there are four native lenses available for the R-series shooters, with six more arriving this year. Compared to that, Sony already has a huge ecosystem of native optics for its full-frame mirrorless cameras. Given the infancy of the Canon and Nikon full-frame mirrorless ecosystem, it could just be a matter of time before Sony faces tougher competition. 10 things to look out for on your next mirrorless camerahttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/digital-home/~4/GTCC9Ah50iY
  2. Earlier this year, Spotify made an official complaint to the European Commission (the EU’s competition and consumer arm) regarding Apple and its alleged anti-competitive practices, and now a report from the Financial Times is suggesting that the case will be investigated. In particular, Spotify has complained about the App Store’s apparent discrimination against, and suppression of, music streaming services that compete with Apple Music and are hosted on the service. Spotify boasts twice as many paid subscribers as Apple MusicApple’s current model for its App Store is to take a 30% cut of all subscriptions purchased through its platform, which in turn would artificially inflate the cost of a Premium Spotify account above that of an Apple Music subscription, according to Spotify CEO and founder Daniel Ek. Ek also claims that if his company were to forego the use of Apple’s payment system, it “then applies a series of technical and experience-limiting restrictions on Spotify,” such as limiting communication with customers, blocking upgrades, and not allowing compatibility with such devices and services as HomePod, Siri, and Apple Watch. Spotify trials subscription plan for two called Premium DuoApple has made a somewhat barbed response to the complaint, largely rejecting the claims and accusing Spotify of being financially-driven: “After using the App Store for years to dramatically grow their business, Spotify seeks to keep all the benefits of the App Store ecosystem – including the substantial revenue that they draw from the App Store’s customers – without making any contributions to that marketplace,” Apple claims. “At the same time, they distribute the music you love while making ever-smaller contributions to the artists, musicians and songwriters who create it – even going so far as to take these creators to court.” Apple Music hits 50 million subscribersAccording the the Times’ sources, an investigation will commence in the next few weeks, but there’s no guarantee that the findings will fall in Spotify’s favor. If they do, however, we could potentially see more affordable Spotify subscriptions via the App Store, along with other competing streaming services. 3. According to new tests conducted by UK consumer watchdog Which?, Apple is greatly overestimating the battery life of various iPhone models, with the iPhone XR falling particularly short of the manufacturer's 25-hour talk time claim. The independent organisation tested nine recent iPhone models, finding that they all underperformed when it came to battery life, offering anywhere between 18-51% less runtime than Apple's claims about the devices, with the iPhone XR being the worst offender – a finding that actually conflicts with our own iPhone XR testing, where we noted that it "offers the best battery life of any phone from the Cupertino brand." iPhone XR reviewiPhone XS reviewiPhone XS Max reviewWhich? states that,"the [iPhone XR] battery lasted for 16 hours and 32 minutes, whereas Apple claimed that it would last 25 hours" when it comes to talk time. Apple was quick to respond to the Which?'s claims, unsurprisingly standing behind its products. “We rigorously test our products and stand behind our battery life claims," said Apple in a statement provided to Business Insider, further claiming that "With tight integration between hardware and software, iPhone is engineered to intelligently manage power usage to maximize battery life." The statement continued, "Our testing methodology reflects that intelligence." What about other manufacturers?Apple isn't the only phone manufacturer allegedly exaggerating its battery life figures, with Which? also calling out HTC's talk time claims, albeit to a much lesser degree – an average talk time of 19.6 hours was found to be 5% lower than HTC's claim of 20.5 hours. In contrast to the above findings, Which? found Samsung, Sony and Nokia to be underestimating the average talk times of their devices, and while it doesn't offer exact figures for most handsets, it did praise Sony's Xperia Z5 Compact for providing 25 hours and 52 minutes of talk time – almost 9 hours more than the manufacturer's 17-hour claim. It's worth noting that the consumer watchdog's testing methods are slightly vague, only stating that it used fully-charged phones and timed continuous phone calls until the devices eventually gave out – no mention was made regarding screen brightness, background processes or notifications. 5. Virtual reality is with us. It's real. It's here. But it's not exactly popular. Some think that's because we're social beings, and the idea of sitting on our own and being entertained alone and separated from others is off-putting. Technically impressive they might be, but if the likes of HTC Vive Pro, Google Daydream View and the new Oculus Go merely allow us to spend more time with computer-generated characters, they're only ever going to have niche appeal. Besides, collaboration between players, and even two players seeing each other, is tricky without accurate avatars, which means using a lot of hardware. Cue a ball-shaped VR display called Crystal that's designed to be watched by two people simultaneously, and uses relatively inexpensive off-the-shelf components. Could it replace VR headsets? What is Crystal? It's a mixed reality globe with a physical 24-inch hollow ball-shaped display that presents 3D virtual content, but overlaid on to the real world. “The system supports perspective-corrected rendering in stereoscopic view for a single viewer, in mono for two viewers, and with additional mobile screens for extra viewers,” reads a paper published by researchers at the University of British Columbia and University of Saskatchewan. “It integrates high precision multi-projector calibration, perceptual viewpoint calibration, high fidelity motion tracking and active flicker glasses to create a high frame rate, high resolution spherical display capable of presenting a multi-person mixed reality experience.” Put simply, each player gets their own perspective-corrected 3D experience. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/mKvz7u2N5cSvmoqFkdKc3R.jpg Researchers suggest that VR might be too solitary an experience to go mainstream. Image credit: Jamie Carter How does Crystal work?Crystal uses four carefully calibrated high-speed Optoma GT750ST mini short-throw projectors to create the images, which fill a plexiglass sphere coated with translucent projection paint. It uses advanced calibration and graphics rendering techniques to produce a complete, distortion-free 3D image even when viewed from multiple angles. That calibration is done using an OptiTrack optical tracking headset, so don't think of this as a hardware-killing invention. "We track a person's head so that the image on there looks correct from their perspective as they move around," says Sidney Fels, an electrical and computer engineering professor at UBC. "Using that, the person sees a beautiful 3D scene as they move around." That makes it viewable by more than one person, which makes it different to similar-looking 'fish tank virtual reality' (FTVR) displays that have existed for years and produce a stereo image of a 3D scene. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/T8WKcCNwF4G86HXaCiknxZ.jpg Professor Sid Fels's globe VR display supports two or more players or viewers. Image credit: UBC What does Crystal do?Critically, it allows two people to see the created images. As well as encouraging a more sociable virtual reality that could be more interesting to people who like to play games with others rather than alone, it could also be useful for collaborating in the workplace. “The resurgence of headset VR in recent years has renewed interest in collaborative VR experiences,” reads the paper. “Co-location within the physical world affords many tangible and intangible benefits for collaboration.” Is Crystal any good? The whole point of Crystal is 'shared 3D' viewing; it allows two people to have unobstructed 3D perspective views into a spherical display while still being able to see and talk to one another. "When you look at our globe, the 3D illusion is rich and correct from any angle," says Fels. "This allows two users to use the display to do some sort of collaborative task or enjoy a multiplayer game, while being in the same space. It's one of the very first spherical VR systems with this capability." The researchers tested it over four day with multiple people cooperating in a ‘find the fish’ game, a 3D ping-pong game, and a cooperative apple-grabbing game. The players reported strong, believable 3D and motion parallax effects. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/MeyXypfWS3ATRkbyFwCGCB.jpg HTC-Vive-HMD. Image credit: HTC How could Crystal be used?VR is not just about gaming. The researchers think their creation could be useful for teleconferencing and computer-aided design. At CES 2019 in January, Belgian company Mimesys demoed a 5G-enabled holographic remote collaboration system with Intel using Magic Leap's mixed reality headsets (and also some awesome holographic business cards). It feels like you're in the room with someone, at least in a rudimentary way, because it overlays their image on to your surroundings. Crystal is a similarly ambitious kind of mixed reality, and its makers have big plans. "Imagine a remote user joining a meeting of local users," says Ian Stavness, a computer science professor at the University of Saskatchewan and a member of the research team. "At either location you can have a Crystal globe, which is great for seeing people's heads and faces in 3D, or you can have a team of industrial designers in a room, perfecting a design with the help of VR and motion tracking technology." To that end, Crystal also has a camera embedded in it. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/hT2BsaSoYsiYb6cyn9ZinK.jpg 360-degree cameras are making it easier to create VR video. Image credit: Insta360 What's next for Crystal? This is just-out-of-the-lab technology, so don't expect to see it as a finished product anytime soon, but the researchers think that the two-player version of Crystal is just the beginning. They are now working on a four-person version, which would open up a lot more use-cases such as multiplayer VR gaming, virtual surgery and VR-aided learning. “Headsets, and VR versions in particular, impede feelings of real-world connectedness and situatedness between people as they share a virtual space,” says the paper. “Of all mixed reality technologies under active research and development, we believe that spherical displays have the best potential to provide the visual illusion of a virtual scene merged indistinguishable with the real environment.” So is it goodbye to VR headsets? "We're not saying that spherical VR will replace flat screens or headsets, but we think it can be a good option for VR activities where you still want to see and talk to other people," says Fels. "Be it at home or in the office, for work or play." Check out our guide to the best VR headsetshttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/digital-home/~4/5y4wPqQ-pDk
  6. 'This is a re-published article that we've picked as one of our favorites of the last year from our suite of TechRadar Originals'. What’s next for headphones? It may seem like a moot question. Surely we just want better audio, comfier cans, and better value across the board. Is there anything a pair of headphones could do that could actually change the way we listen to music? At the premium end of the headphones market, often what distinguishes models comes down to styling or brand loyalty – anyone can spot your Beats headphones at about 50 paces – as much as slight variations in what frequencies are drawn out of your tracks. It’s rare that you find a line of headphones offering a fundamentally different user experience, but that’s exactly what Funky Sound is aiming to do. The French audio startup, founded by its CEO Arnaud Perret, has rethought the relationship between audio hardware and the inputs played through it. So what is Funky Sound’s Debussy range going to do differently? A prélude to something differentThe products in the Debussy audio range are described as ‘smart autonomous headphones’, without the tyranny of either cables or the lossy Bluetooth connection robbing your music of audio detail. The range comprises the primary over-ear Prélude model, a premium Prélude X model, and a third on-ear 'mini' option. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/ZzWm7ShHtmkPremdf4iWa.jpg The design itself is clearly towards the luxury end of the scale – cue gold or platinum coloring, premium leather padding, musical notations running along the band, and light red, white and blue detailing to display the colors of the company’s French homeland. But it’s the touchscreen display that will really catch your eye. Set on the left-side can, this doubles up as a navigational menu and a visual synthesizer for your music, with the option of displaying your own images and videos to personalize what you want your headphones to show off. What also stands out is each pair’s on-board computer, one that’s able to run streaming apps like Tidal, Spotify and Deezer – over 4G or Wi-Fi – without outsourcing the processing to an external device. You can still link it with your smartphone or smartwatch for playback controls, but the music itself begins and ends in the headphones themselves. You’ll even be able to use an eSim to make calls without a handset. Apple Music vs Spotify: the two music streaming giants go head to headIt’s hard to stress how novel an idea that feels. Audiophiles so often have to choose between the convenience of wireless Bluetooth and the assured sound quality of a cabled connection (although some more serious offerings like the RHA CL2 Planars offer both options out of the box). While the success of Funky Sounds' headphones will come down to how well these systems and services are integrated, the vision on paper bodes well for the consumer. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/BrLidwi469hJNjBbxxsga.jpg That all includes on-board storage too: the Prélude headphones will come with 32GB for audio files, while the Prélude X pack in a larger 64GB. The Prélude model alone could hold more than 10,000 MP3 tracks, and still have room for thousands of high-grade audio files (formats such as FLAC or Apple Lossless). Voice assistants like Alexa and Google Assistant are already starting to make their way into mainstream pairs of headphones, and Funky Sound plans to build in that sort of integration down the line – although with a basic own-brand AI assistant built in by default. Star backingAs the name Debussy – after the French composer Claude Debussy – suggests, Funky Sounds is an audio brand focused on its heritage. Speaking to TechRadar, Arnaut Perret managed to name-drop everyone from Stevie Wonder to Kavinsky (the composer for Ryan Gosling vehicle Drive) as collaborators on the project, with assurances that there were even more “big names to come”. Funky Sound is making much of its connections as an assurance of quality, with the headphones’ built-in EQ mastered by regular Daft Punk collaborator Antoine Chabert. While we did have the chance to test out the headphones ourselves, there’s only so much we can infer from a prototype model – one without any of the smart features or touchscreen capability that Funky Sound promises will make the Préludes stand out from the crowd. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/u6oDkJjPP7ZeVYrqKRCwY.jpg The hardware and design we’ve seen are finalized, while the next nine months or so will be spend fully developing the software needed to make all these lofty promises, including an integrated DAC and real-time audio translation, a reality – that is, if someone with deeper cash reserves doesn’t get there first. “All the manufacturers will copy, for sure,” says Perret. “But all we’re building, with all the artists and branding, that experience we’re creating... that cannot be mimicked.” The audio brand has now launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund its range of Debussy headphones, and the next few months could either establish the range or consign it to the pile of nice-sounding tech ideas that didn't quite make it. Funky Sound says its Prélude headphones are aimed at “people for whom music is at the center of their life”. But if the technology moves within reach of more casual listeners, the convenience and reliability of a fully integrated system – one that can host all the various streaming services, apps, and storage you’d need to input audio into your ears – could well impact the way we all consume our music. 7. As endings go, The Last of Us's was pretty conclusive. But as it turns out, that hasn't stopped The Last of Us developer Naughty Dog from cranking out a sequel in the form of The Last of Us 2 – or, The Last of Us Part II if we're using its proper name. Given the first game was hailed by players and critics alike as a masterpiece with excellent, emotional storytelling and engaging, realistic characters, we have to admit that the decision to release a follow-up isn't particularly shocking. We'd probably have been more surprised if there wasn't one. And yet, when The Last of Us 2 was first announced, we'd be lying if we said our heart didn't skip a beat. How The Last Of Us raised the bar for video game narrativesThe Last of Us 2 was first announced by Naughty Dog at PlayStation Experience in 2016 alongside a teaser trailer and as we're now into 2019, we're now hoping to hear an official release date any day now. Although we got a closer look at the game, Sony didn't give us any hints during E3 2018 when we'd see the game, but it's looking more and more likely that we'll have to wait until 2019 to see what becomes of Ellie in the brutal post-cure world. [Update: We could see an update for The Last of Us 2 before E3 2019.] Cut to the chaseWhat is it? The sequel to the critically acclaimed post-apocalyptic game The Last of UsWhen can I play it? It’ll be a while from now, late 2019 or early 2020What can I play it on? PlayStation 4The Last of Us 2 trailers The most recent trailer we have for The Last of Us 2 was shown during E3 2018. This trailer finally gives us a look at Ellie in an intimate scene before cutting away to some of the brutal but stealth-based combat we can expect to see in the game when it's launched. The gameplay sequence gives us a look at Ellie fighting for her life in the wild. Success in a fight appears to require the right balance between stealth and all out attack as damage seems to have a more realistic impact. Ellie can move quietly between areas, taking weapons from bodies and crafting, before bursting out and taking down her enemies. See the gameplay for yourself below. The Last of Us Part 2 had another trailer drop during PSX 2017. During a panel it was confirmed that the game will be set in the city of Seattle and the darker themes we know are coming were touched upon. You can watch the panel for yourself below: Another trailer for the game was shown at Sony's press conference during the 2017 Paris Games Week. This trailer is around 5 minutes long, focusing on conflicts between the human factions in the game. It shows part 2 is going to have a dark story, perhaps even darker than the first, and the trailer is fairly harrowing to watch. Visually impressive though it is, do note that it's gory before you watch it for yourself below. The first look at the game came with its announcement at PlayStation Experience in 2016. Despite the fact that the game is early in development, the trailer showed a full (non-gameplay) scene that features both Ellie and Joel. You can watch it below: The Last of Us 2 release dateThe Last of Us 2 has been in the works for a while but we're still waiting for a definite release date. Considering Naughty Dog has seen the bad side of promising a solid release date and missing it before it’s hard to blame them for not committing at this stage. In a recent interview with Vorterix, the game's composer, Gustavo Santaolalla, said that it's going to launch in 2019. Naturally, this hasn't been confirmed so we'd take it with a pinch of salt. However, it doesn't seem all that implausible as a release window given that in-game footage was only shown as recently as Paris Games Week. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/PM9s7Ah42v6KK7d6trAHe.jpg What we know so farWe could see more before E3 2019 Sony isn't coming to E3 2019 but that doesn't mean it's not going to be making announcements around that time and a big update for The Last of Us Part 2 could be imminent. Hopes have been raised by an industry insider on a Resetera thread which discusses a potential release date for the game. User Aokiji, who has made some accurate leaks before, said "Considering we’re getting an official TLOU2 update before E3, would be really weird if it wasn’t 2019 now wouldn’t it ." Now, any news that doesn't come from Naughty Dog or Sony itself should, of course, be taken with a pinch of salt. However, the time feels ripe for an update on the progress of the game. With E3 2019 only just over a month away, we don't have long to wait to find out. Definitely coming to E3 2018 Sony has confirmed the time and date of its E3 conference as June 11 at 6pm PT/ 9am BST. And Sony Worldwide Studios boss, Shawn Layden, has confirmed during a PlayStation Blogcast that the Last of Us 2 will feature. Layden said that Sony has decided to "refresh and remake its show" and that fans can expect to see "deep dives", gaining a better understanding of where Naughty Dog is and plans to go with the title. Mocap is underway Things have been quiet on the official news front for The Last of Us 2 but we've been glad to see some studio insiders and actors from the game posting images on social media which show that the game's motion capture is well underway. Actors Ashley Johnson and Shannon Woodward have both posted images of themselves wearing mocap suits. They didn't give much away but the fact that Naughty Dog is this far into the motion capture process suggests we might at least be closer to hearing about a possible release date. Troy Baker is impressed The Last of Us 2 is still in the works, but we now know that one of its lead voice actors, Troy Baker, has had an in-depth look and he thinks the game is 'awesome'. It's not clear whether Baker just saw some gameplay or had the chance to go hands-on himself but according to GameRant he said during MCM Comic Con at Birmingham “It’s a fantastic story. It’s a fantastic game. We just finished a playtest. It’s looking awesome. I can’t for it to be on shelves.” Though we can't be sure where exactly in the development process it is (during PSX, it was said that Naughty Dog had reached around the 50 to 60% mark) this playtest is an encouraging sign. Directors With Neil Druckmann having been promoted to Vice President of Naughty Dog, The Last of Us 2 now has two confirmed directors. Druckmann will, of course, still be heavily involved in the creation of the game but it's now being headed up by Anthony Newman and Kurt Margenau, both of whom were lead designers on Uncharted 4. Story Although it was no slouch in the gameplay department, it was the story told by The Last of Us that stuck with us for months afterwards. Naturally Naughty Dog had to give us some kind of hint about where the sequel would go. At the moment we know The Last of Us 2 will take place in the city of Seattle, five years after the end of the original game, with a 19 year old Ellie taking the starring playable role. Joel will still appear in the game but if the teaser trailer is anything to go by, he could be a much more passive presence. This time around, Ellie is extremely angry about...something. From what we saw from the teaser trailer she wants revenge, which to her appears to be a dish best served deadly. She does, after all, promise to “kill every last one of them.” It’s not clear who “them” is but it could signal that the Fireflies, the first game's well-meaning but morally grey antagonists, will make a return. Anger, hate and revenge are going to be key themes this time around so expect to be in for an emotionally heavy ride. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/TjpUz8LVrUyTEWKXgGDHYA.jpg As Joel is such a passive presence in the trailer there’s been speculation that he’s actually dead, appearing in Ellie’s mind’s eye, and Ellie’s anger and vengeance will be directed at those who caused his death. This isn’t entirely unlikely but it’s purely speculation at this point. It is worth pointing out, however, that Neil Druckmann did reveal in an interview with PlayStation Lifestyle that this announcement trailer footage is not a scene that will actually take place in the real game. In the trailer for the game shown at Paris Games Week in 2017, we got a look at how dark the game is likely to be. The trailer focuses on the opposing relationships between human characters in the game and features some seriously cringe-inducing violence. It doesn't tell us much about any new characters of how they'll relate to one another but it does confirm that we're going into a dark game world in The Last of Us part 2. In a recent panel at PSX both Druckmann and Gross said that though the game's story will indeed be dark and there'll be a focus on the theme of hate, "there is hope" and there will be "lighthearted moments." We can't pretend we're not relieved to hear this after the game's controversial Paris Games Week trailer which, Druckmann said, was intended to highlight the game's exploration of the pursuit of justice. Ellie is one of the most real and refreshing characters we’ve seen in gaming so it’s exciting that Naughty Dog are going to take her story further and put her in center stage. The creative director of the game, Neil Druckmann has that the story will be about Ellie and Joel’s relationship and that though the story would be complementary to the story of the first game, it would be much larger. When asked at a PSX panel whether or not Joel or Ellie may die, Druckmann responded that "no one is safe" highlighting that the game's story really could go anywhere. Hopes are particularly high for this larger story as it’s been revealed that one of the writers of Westworld, Halley Gross, will be co-writing the game’s story. Having someone who’s written scripts for such an incredibly popular and successful show should be a boon for the game's story. Gameplay Not much is being said about gameplay at the moment. Neil Druckmann said at a PSX Panel that there would, however, be some differences as a result of Ellie being the playable character rather than Joel. “Ellie plays differently than Joel [...] Some things are evolution, some things are reinvention, but there will be a gameplay reveal down the road.” It’s hard to glean much from this, but if Naughty Dog take the approach that’s frequently taken with playable female characters, Ellie will probably be more swift on her feet than Joel was but perhaps less able to take damage. This won't be the first time we've had the chance to play as Ellie, after the first game put us in her shoes for a short mission, but here the purpose of the mission was to make her feel weak in comparison to Joel. We can only hope her abilities will be expanded for the sequel. In the Paris Games Week trailer she certainly looks far physically stronger than she did in the first game. We expect to see much more in terms of gameplay from E3 2018 after Druckmann stated in the PSX panel that more details for the game would emerge at that event. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/e29a5696307762298148eb73031c7dd5.jpg What we'd like to see from The Last of Us 2A new setting Given that time has moved on 5 years from the end of the first game, it’d be nice to see Joel and Ellie in a new location too. It doesn’t necessarily have to be far from the setting of the first game but considering we have the two lead characters and their relationship to keep us tied to the first game, it’d be nice to play in a new location to keep things feeling fresh and make the introduction of new characters feel more plausible. Druckmann has said that this game’s story will be larger than the story of the first game and we imagine this necessitates a slightly more expansive setting. More frightening enemies The infected in the first game are terrifying and threatening and we want to see more of that. Things don’t have to change too much but new classes of enemy, new character designs and new ways to defeat them would be excellent. Considering we’ll be playing as Ellie now rather than Joel we imagine players will have to learn to take a different approach to combat anyway as it’s been said she’ll play differently. It’d also be great to see more human enemies as well as the infected. We saw more than a few morally grey factions make an appearance in the first game so to expand on this and maybe introduce some more elements would be interesting. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/078d605230e32ce9fe9c40d4c5784f23.jpg The exploration of the morality of humanity in post-apocalyptic scenes is always interesting, particularly considering in games you’re interacting with it directly and feeling its impact more strongly than in most mediums. The Last of Us 2 has the chance to make a real emotional impact through the human areas it presents us with. The return of multiplayer Multiplayer in The Last of Us was surprisingly good so we wouldn’t be averse to seeing it return here. If the game’s main story is going to be as heavy as we expect, it’d certainly be nice to have the option to break free for a while without leaving the game world and connect with others online. 8. At the AI Everything Summit in Dubai this week, Huawei presented a global AI development strategy that aims to help businesses to implement and integrate various AI solutions. A key highlight was Huawei’s Atlas AI computing platform, which covers the cloud, edge, and terminal. And is based on Huawei’s self-developed Ascend series AI chips. The chips will feature in a variety of product forms such as a AI accelerator module, AI accelerator card, AI edge station and AI server, which meets the needs of cloud, edge and terminal all-scenario AI deployment. Huawei also showcased the Atlas 510 AI Edge Station, which provides superior edge AI computing power into one all-inclusive package that is both water and dust proof. Its unique design means that it can be deployed to a variety of outdoor locations, including lamp poles. It could then be integrated into other systems such as traffic control, pedestrian monitoring, and security cameras to support real-time pedestrian and vehicle analytics. Powering the intelligent transformationWhile AI adoption is still in its infancy, Huawei feels that it’s a technology that will benefit several industries. Partner companies such as YITU and CCi Intelligence demonstrated AI applications in the fields such as campus, finance, power sector, medical care, and intellectual property protection, making AI applications easier to use and accelerating the intelligent transformation of the industry. The company also intends to adopt a more heterogeneous computing model to run alongside existing computing architectures, which in turn would make AI adoption much more seamless. Through this much more manageable adoption, the company hopes to accelerate AI usage and adoption to at least 50% by the year 2024. 9. Bethesda granted the wishes of Elder Scrolls fans everywhere when studio boss Todd Howard confirmed at E3 2018 that the developer is working on the highly-anticipated The Elder Scrolls 6. Although we only got a glimpse at a short teaser trailer, rumors immediately started about where the latest Elder Scrolls title will be set, when it will release and when we will hear more. So we've gathered and assessed all the news and rumors about The Elder Scrolls 6 in this handy guide. Here's everything you need to know. [update: It looks like The Elder Scrolls 6 isn't likely to be making an appearance at E3 2019. Read on to find out more.] Cut to the chaseWhat is it? The highly anticipated sequel to the Elder Scrolls V: SkyrimWhen can I play it? Not soonWhat can I play it on? PC is a safe bet, as well as the latest console generationsElder Scrolls 6 release date – when can I play it?We might as well get the bad news out of the way first – you’re not likely to be playing The Elder Scrolls 6 any time soon. The good news, however, is that it’s been confirmed you will be able to...eventually. The game was confirmed during Bethesda's E3 2018 conference but nothing more than a logo was given. We don't even have a subtitle or a release year. Todd Howard said that the game will be coming after Starfield, the company's next big IP. That means Elder Scrolls 6 could be years away. In addition, (via GamesRadar) has been looking into the challenges Bethesda's parent company ZeniMax faces with regards to the Redfall trademark it has applied for. According to SkullziTV, if the two parties don't come to an agreement, we won't be seeing any mentions of Redfall (aka the rumored name of the upcoming Elder Scrolls game) until at least 2021.http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/FwUZxFsZwd2vsjYwPtCSdQ.png Elder Scrolls 6 trailer – when can I watch it?The only footage we have of Elder Scrolls 6 is a very short clip of the game's logo. Other than that, you might be waiting a while to see more. Here's the announcement trailer: Elder Scrolls 6 rumorsIt may be called the Elder Scrolls 6: Redfall Bethesda may have trademarked the name for the Elder Scrolls 6. According to a report by Newsweek, ZeniMax Media (Bethesda's parent company) filed a new trademark for 'Redfall' which the company stated was for a 'computer game software for use with computers and video game consoles'. It's nothing solid, but there's a slim chance the new Elder Scrolls will be called Elder Scrolls 6: Redfall. Redditors are speculating the name is linked to the Redfall location in Tamriel or to the Redguard race in Elder Scrolls, however Bethesda has not confirmed or denied anything. Elder Scrolls 6 newsElder Scrolls 6 likely won't be appearing at E3 Although Elder Scrolls 6 was a big highlight of E3 2018, it won’t be making any kind of appearance at Bethesda’s E3 2019 conference. During a PAX East Panel celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Elder Scrolls franchise, when asked about Elder Scrolls 6 and some of the new tech being used in its development, Todd Howard said that Bethesda's highly anticipated titles Elder Scrolls 6 and Starfield (which is slated for release first) are "going to be a long time! It’s not something we’re going to be talking about, either of those games, at E3 this year, and so patience, please”. Of course, talking about the game in any detail and showing another teasing trailer to round off the show (maybe one confirming that pesky name) are different things and we're sure fans will hold onto some hope of another nod, no matter how small, during the conference this year. Photogrammetry technology will be used In that 25th anniversary panel which dashed the E3 dreams of so many, Bethesda did at the very least give fans a glimpse of some of the technology that will be used in the development of The Elder Scrolls 6. We got a peek at the use of photogrammetry which involves scanning real-life objects and environments to bring them into the game in detailed 3D. The technology will make its first outing in Starfield before the latest iteration is used for Elder Scrolls. Skyrim Grandma will be making an appearance Speaking of photogrammetry, beloved YouTube star and Skyrim player Shirley Curry, known as Skyrim Grandma by her fans, has announced on Twitter that she’ll be making an appearance in the Elder Scrolls 6. In the above 25th Anniversary video we even got a glimpse of what could well be her character being created using the latest photogrammetry technology. Redfall trademark dispute While fans wait with bated breath for more news on The Elder Scrolls 6, a legal battle between Bethesda's parent company ZeniMaz Media and BookBreeze.com has potentially been putting a spanner in the works. But an agreement might be on the horizon. This legal battle has been going on for a while, with Bookbreeze.com (aka author Jay Falconer) disputing ZeniMax filing a new trademark for 'Redfall', which the company stated was for "computer game software for use with computers and video game consoles". In other words, it's possible that this could be the name of the upcoming Elder Scrolls 6 game – due to the Redfall location in Tamriel, or the Redguard race in Elder Scrolls. However Falconer claims that he has already developed a brand under the Redfall name and, according to a blog post, is disputing ZeniMax's filing "to protect what I feel is my ownership of the brand, and to protect my right to sell books (print, ebook, and audiobook) and the movie/film rights". "I want all of you to know I'm not trying to stop the game nor am I trying to get any money from the game. I want nothing from the game at all," Falconer wrote. "I’m only trying to protect my ability to keep selling my books. This is simply a dispute over a trademark name. Nothing more. It’s not a cash grab – I want nothing from them and it should in no way hold up any game. "With that said, we can avoid the USPTO all together and find a no-cost resolution once all parties have a conversation. We just need to have that conversation. I’m ready and willing and open to whatever resolution makes sense." http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/NsbvE7CSdoihJpfyHvNgwT.jpg However, as spotted by our sister site GamesRadar, an agreement may be in the works. According to the United States Patent and Trademark Office, the Redfall trademark application documents state that ZeniMax has requested the dates to be pushed back a month as the “parties are engaged in settlement discussions”. According to GamesRadar's research, those settlement discussions are likely being used to avoid a long trademark dispute, which would prevent us hearing any more information about The Elder Scrolls 6's official title until 2021. According to GamesRadar, settlement discussions could mean one of three things: Both parties agree to enter into a coexistence agreement, which allows them both to use the Redfall name (ZeniMax would have to pay out to Falconer).ZeniMax withdraws the application but enters into a license agreement (paying a fee) to Falconer.ZeniMax pays a one-off sum for Falconer to withdraw his opposition.Bethesda's E3 2019 showcase dated and confirmed Bethesda's E3 2019 showcase kicks off at 5.30pm PDT on Sunday 9 June, with the horror shooter Doom Eternal confirmed to appear. Having been teased at last year's show, could we also see The Elder Scrolls VI make an appearance? There's a fair chance, especially if this year's E3 coincides with the reveal of the PS5 and Xbox Two – we'd be shocked if the Skyrim follow-up wasn't being aimed at next-gen consoles. Elder Scrolls VI goes official Bethesda is a busy studio: not only is it working on a brand new IP, Starfield, it's also continuing to develop for Elder Scrolls Online and it's taking on the long commitment of Fallout 76. And that's only in its main RPG franchises. It's still got plenty going on elsewhere with mobile games, Dishonored, Prey and others. Thanks to Todd Howard, we know Bethesda is working on two huge new titles simultaneously, though their developments are staggered. We now know that one of them is the Elder Scrolls 6. Having returned to Skyrim after some time away, Howard compared it to seeing an old friend from high school, adding that the time away had given him the chance to see Skyrim as a gamer for the first time. This, to us, would be the perfect time to start applying this new perspective to the next title in the series. At the very least we can say we know it won’t just be called Elder Scrolls 6. There’s going to be a colon and another word to round the title off if previous releases are anything to go by. Where will Elder Scrolls 6 be set? We’re also willing to bet that like all the other games in the series it’s going to be set in the continent of Tamriel, the map of which is below. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/pAd8ec5pqY3PmzJdRNyTEe.jpg Previous games have taken us to Highrock, Hammerfell, Morrowind, Cyrodil, and Skyrim. Valenwood, Elsweyr and Black Marsh are the biggest places left to explore. Though there’s still much of Morrowind left to explore, we imagine much of that will be covered in the upcoming Elder Scrolls Online title. So, Valenwood, Elsweyr or Black Marsh. Which looks most likely? Rumors online are heavily pointing towards Black Marsh, the home of the world’s reptilian Argonian race. There isn’t actually any solid reason for this rumor, but its swampy marshlands and network of islands would make for an interesting geographic change for the series, though it’s a geography that would leave itself open to comparison with the Witcher 3. It’s probably the region of Tamriel that we know the least about so Bethesda would have plenty of room to be creative. That said, Elsweyr would also be an interesting geography change with its dry plains and harsh badlands that the Khajit call home. It would certainly be nice to find out more about the culture of either the Khajit or the Argonians so both of these extremely different settings have an understandable appeal to fans. There is, however, weight to a rumor that Elder Scrolls 6 could be set in Valenwood. Valenwood is the home of the Bosmer and it’s an area of Tamriel that Bethesda hasn’t explored much. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/3jjcnCMBPp6QhdNUPs2EjM.jpg The rumor that the game will be set here is based on a reported internal Bethesda memo from all the way back in 2014. In this memo, Bethesda employees were reportedly wanted against using the terms Fallout: Nuka World, Elder Scrolls VI or Project Greenheart. Though it was initially believed to be a fake, Fallout: Nuka World ended up being a big DLC release for Fallout 4 which gives slightly more weight to rumor that Project Greenheart is in fact the codename for the next Elder Scrolls title. The fact that Greenheart is a city in the verdant region of Valenwood makes this even more interesting. Forest and jungle settings are hard to get right in games and it’d be really interesting to see Bethesda get creative with the part of Tamriel that’s said to have rejected civilization and embraced the wilderness. It's hard to tell from the short E3 clip we have of the game but our first impression is that the game world looks a lot more like Valenwood or Elsweyr than Black Marsh. In an interview with Eurogamer, Todd Howard confirmed the team has settled on the location - but he won't tell us where yet. What features can we expect?Homebuilding A feature that we’re fairly certain will be included in the game to some degree is house building or town creation. Skyrim introduced the idea of designing and maintaining a homestead with its Hearthfire DLC, which Fallout 4 expanded upon with the introduction of its settlement mechanic and the Elder Scrolls online built upon again with its Homestead DLC. This leads neatly into a further expansion of such features in the next Elder Scrolls title as it felt not-quite-finished in Fallout. It would be a feature that would actually fit in particularly well with the rumored Valenwood setting, if it involved the player adapting to the wilderness in the way the resident Bosmer have with their treetop cities. In a similar way the player used debris and junk to craft their settlement in Fallout, they could use their natural environment to do so in Elder Scrolls in a nice contrast. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/nR23a6MhVgF5nwxA6wj82A.jpg A whole new story In a recent interview with Gamespot, Todd Howard said that Bethesda is looking into how exactly it tells stories in its games. Howard noted that Skyrim and Fallout 4 take slightly different approaches to stories, with Skyrim leaving things more open to the player’s vision and Fallout guiding them more firmly through a story Now he says the studio are looking how to “tell a better story in an open world.” He said “each of our games we've had successes and failures and if you ask us internally, we have new ideas that we want to explore in the future because we feel like we haven't really cracked it yet the way we think it could be.” Being aware of the differences between Skyrim and Fallout’s approaches to storytelling and the fact that both have positives and negatives suggests that the next Elder Scrolls title could strike some kind of balance between giving the player completely free reign and telling a story around their character. It’s hard to deny that The Witcher 3 has had a massive impact on what players expect in terms of including an engaging story in an open world game. Though we don’t in any way want Bethesda to just churn out a Witcher copy (we’re not sure it’d be possible anyway) it does put a certain amount of pressure on Bethesda when it comes to achieving high-quality environmental and quest-based story telling. Something we don’t expect to see, though, is multiplayer. Skyrim certainly doesn’t suffer from a lack of multiplayer and it wouldn’t really make all that much sense to incorporate any online multiplayer gameplay with the Elder Scrolls Online still rolling along. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/7647Lbi38Vv6DW4pKuAmk6.jpg Virtual reality It's not a certainty by any means but the fact that Bethesda released a full VR experience for Skyrim means it's not out of the question. What would we like to see?http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/UFZYKYTpQesPQEErW9egFH.jpg Well, something we’d like to see and fully expect to see is improved graphics and reduced bugginess. The remastered version of Skyrim showed just how far things have come visually since the game’s first release so we fully expect any title following on from it to be of that standard if not much higher, depending on how far away the game is. There’s actually a fairly good chance that the game could be created using an entirely new game engine – after it created an entirely new engine for Skyrim we don’t think it’s unlikely Bethesda will do the same for Elder Scrolls 6 and any Fallout sequels. The Bethesda game studio in Montreal is currently looking to hire an engine programmer so it’s well worth watching this space. 13. We're finally starting to see 5G phones make their way to Europe, after networks and phones became available in the US and South Korea in April, but the race to release the first 5G phone in Europe was a tight one. In the end the top three contenders crossed the line in quick succession – the Oppo Reno 5G, Huawei Mate 20 X 5G and Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G all became available in Switzerland during May 1 and 2, however the winner was something of a surprise. Could the new iPhone 11 be 5G?We're expecting the Galaxy Note 10 to have a 5G versionThese are the best camera phonesThe Swiss 5G finish lineThe phone that launched on May 1 was the Oppo Reno 5G, a phone from a brand that's not exactly a household name in Europe, despite being a very popular company in Asia. Many would have expected the title to go to Samsung or OnePlus, so Oppo stealing a march shows the brand is out to make waves. The first 5G network in Europe came in Switzerland on April 17, when telecoms company Swisscom switched on its 5G network. At the time there weren't any commercially-available 5G phones for customers to make the most of the improved connection, but that changed when the first 5G phone from Oppo launched in the country on May 1. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/9Zpk6p7txE8LHoJ9BUsWKe.jpg Meet the Oppo Reno. Image credit: TechRadar Competition wasn't very far behind, however – on May 2, Swiss network provider Sunrise made both the Huawei Mate 20 X and Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G available on its website, so the better-known companies had devices available too. Whether those phones are technically available in Switzerland is a matter of debate, however – while you can pre-order them on Sunrise's website, there's no official release date provided, so Oppo may have more of a headstart in the European 5G phone market than people give it credit for. Why is Oppo a surprise? In the 5G phones race, Oppo is a bit of a dark horse, which is why we're surprised that it's bringing home the gold medal. While Huawei and Xiaomi are relatively big names in Europe, Oppo has yet to really find a market and establish itself. It's only started operating in the continent within the last six months, despite (like Huawei and Xiaomi) being popular in China, it's home country. Many eyes were on Huawei and Xiaomi's 5G contributions, but not as much attention was being paid to Oppo – in a way, it's a great underdog story. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/fjyQ94ocwhwmxuNxUwQxsW.jpg The Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 is running behind. Image credit: Techradar To get the first 5G phone out, Oppo had to create special partnerships with both Swisscom, to get the 5G network running, and Qualcomm, for the special modems needed in the phones to facilitate 5G connectivity – and that must have cost a lot of money. This shows us the company sees its 5G debut as an important part of its plan to expand in Europe, especially as the Oppo Reno is the first phone range it's giving a significant marketing push in Europe. Since established smartphone brands like Apple have no plans for 5G phones that we're aware of, it seems like Oppo, and to a lesser extent Huawei and Xiaomi who must have also spent large amounts of money, are really banking on their 5G phones to upset the traditional smartphone pecking order. The main competitor now for Oppo, Huawei and Xiaomi is Samsung, which could bring its Samsung Galaxy S10 5G with all the Galaxy S10 brand name hype – but each of the three Chinese smartphones sits at a price far below the Galaxy S10 5G, so combined with the buzz they'll receive for being first, they'll be attractive to the more thrifty consumer. What does this mean for 5G Europe?Oppo won the battle of being the first company to bring a 5G phone to Switzerland, but the war for 5G dominance of Europe has only just started – saying that, we can try and use the situation to speculate on the future of 5G in Europe. Firstly, all three competing companies were Chinese manufacturers – while companies like these are gaining smartphone market share, 5G phones are where they could begin to really outpace the handset stalwarts we've been seeing from companies like Samsung and Apple. Oppo's gold medal doesn't facilitate the rise of Chinese smartphones – that was happening anyway, but the first three 5G phones in Europe all being Chinese is an indicator of the changing influence that region is bringing. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/GWK58qodZZwAxmpE8JpEyK.jpg When will the Huawei Mate 20 X 5G be available? Image credit: TechRadar The rivalry between Swisscom and Sunrise in bringing out 5G phones (especially given that it seems Sunrise played its hand a little too early, in opening pre-orders for phones with no release date), could play out in similar ways between telecom companies across the continent. In the UK many companies like Vodafone and EE are set to offer 5G by the end of 2019, and they'll likely be trying hard to be the first networks to offer cutting-edge handsets on their new networks. This means exclusives: to try and outshine competitors, carriers will try to have as many exclusive handsets as possible, at least while there are few 5G phones on the market. We're intrigued to see if it'll be these three phones that compete in each market when 5G rolls out to the rest of Europe, or if more companies will join the race – we know OnePlus has plans to be the first company to launch a 5G phone in the UK, an achievement other companies will try to steal. When 5G was released in the US there was only one phone that worked on it, in the Moto Z3 5G; similarly when South Korea started its network the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G was the only phone customers could use on it. However in Europe 5G is starting with not one but three competing devices, so the continent could be the battlefield in which the leading next-generation smartphone company is decided. Most of the 5G phones we're expecting to see will be out within the year, so it looks like if a smartphone manufacturer can establish its credentials as a leader in the all-new 5G space, it can use this momentum to offer market-leading cameras, batteries and users experiences... if it can afford to outspend the powerhouses of Apple and Samsung. We got hands-on with the world's first 5G phone to see how it runshttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/digital-home/~4/I9f2QXQJVcU

  16. OnePlus phones are some of our favorite phones, but there are certain areas where they don't match the top-end handsets, including waterproofing – and now OnePlus has pushed out a video to explain why. shows what we think is a OnePlus 7 Pro getting dropped into a bucket of water, with an on-screen title declaring that "water resistant ratings for phones cost you money".In other words, the cost of obtaining IP ratings for its phones isn't worth it, according to OnePlus – the firm would rather save money and pass on those savings to customers. Where the OnePlus 7 Pro might fall shortAnother phone launching soonThe latest news on the HoloLens 2However, despite the new video showing a OnePlus phone getting dunked in a bucket, it also advises against trying the same trick at home – OnePlus handsets are labeled "water resistant" but won't necessarily survive a swim. In a forum post following up on the video, OnePlus explains some more of the reasoning behind the lack of IP ratings on its past handsets, a trend that the OnePlus 7 now looks likely to follow. "We know that an IP rating would be the simplest way to prove our phone’s capability, but the certification doesn’t help us communicate our focus on your real experience," says OnePlus. "However, this is not a bucket challenge, and we certainly don’t want all of you to try to drop your OnePlus 7 Pro in a bucket. And just like other smartphone brands that do IP classify their devices, our warranty does not cover water damage." We'll get a proper look at the next OnePlus phone at the OnePlus 7 launch event on May 14, although plenty of specs and features have already been confirmed. 17. While DSLRs are still being released, and continue to be popular with enthusiasts and professionals worldwide, these days things are rather more interesting in the mirrorless camera camp. With Canon, Nikon and Panasonic joining the likes of Sony by launching full-frame mirrorless cameras, and plenty of excellent options from Fujifilm, Olympus and others, mirrorless cameras are not only showing off the latest tech first, they're also welcoming some very tasty new lenses. Best mirrorless camera 2019: 10 top models to suit every budgetSo what should you look for in your next mirrorless camera? We've picked out 10 features that make today's camera's sparkle. While we're not suggesting you only buy a camera that only offers all 10, these are the things to look out for if you want to make sure you're getting the best and most up-to-date technology that will help you capture what you want as effortlessly as possible. 1. High-resolution viewfinderhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/HJSKxT48fH6PkqBYfWEFyN.jpg Most mirrorless cameras, such as the Canon EOS R (above), now have electronic viewfinders, and the most recent breed are very high in quality. Image credit: TechRadar For quite some time, electronic viewfinders were derided by serious photographers. Typically only found in compact cameras, they were tunnel-like, grainy and lacked color accuracy, and were far removed from the glorious optical finders that DSLRs were blessed with. But as mirrorless cameras started to gain prominence, manufacturers worked on making them bigger, fitting them with higher-resolution panels, and boosting their refresh rate. And today their images are more lifelike than ever. Right now, the very best electronic viewfinders are the 5.76 million-dot examples found on the Panasonic S1 and S1R cameras, but the 3.69 million-dot units on the likes of the Fujifilm X-T3, Canon EOS R and Nikon Z6 are also stellar. Don't settle for anything less than 2.36 million dots; aim for 3.69 million, and a magnification of around 0.76x or higher. 2. Sensor-based image stabilizationhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/nDYTtWyYkGMdM6ASvQGsK4.jpg Sony is one manufacturer that has fitted many of its most recent cameras with sensor-based stabilization. Image credit: Sony Image stabilization is found inside both mirrorless cameras and compatible lenses, and both systems are effective. But sensor-based stabilization is arguably preferable, for a handful of reasons. First, you benefit from the stabilization whether the lens you're using has stabilization built into it or not. This means you don't have to worry about buying a lens with this included (although if you do, on some cameras the two systems will work together, potentially for better correction). Second, many manufacturers' mirrorless lens ranges are still developing, so there's a chance that the lenses you may want to by won't all have stabilization built in. But if you've got it in-camera, you needn't worry about having it in the lens. This also allows you to use older, slightly more exotic lenses, which may have been released before image stabilization was even available on such products, via adapters and still benefit from this correction. 3. Two memory card slotshttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/uuVtW2kZnLvLZgmKqjinri.jpg Many cameras now offer two memory card slots, which is great for security and/or convenient file management. Image credit: Panasonic The convention for a long time has been for cameras to be fitted with just a single card slot, and that works just fine. So why would you need two? First, with two card slots on board you can carry on shooting once one memory card fills up. This also gives you the added convenience of being able to leave the first card where it is, rather than needing to remove it and store it safely. Alternatively, most cameras now allow you to record the same data to both cards at the same time, so if one memory cards fails or gets corrupted, all your images and videos are safe – ask any wedding photographer whether they think that's useful or not. You can also typically adjust the setup to your specific way of shooting, so that one card records raw files and the other records JPEGs, for example, or so that stills are sent to one card and videos to the other. 4. Hybrid autofocushttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/f7QrkuY85wUF6N2x6YeMvY.jpg Hybrid AF systems are great for tracking moving subjects and when shooting video. Image credit: TechRadar Hybrid AF systems bring together two focusing technologies: contrast-detect AF and phase-detect AF. This best-of-both-worlds approach allows systems to benefit from the accuracy of the first with the speed of the second, and cameras that have both often perform better across a broader range of shooting scenarios. Hybrid AF systems do better at keeping track of moving subjects, for example, so they're particularly useful for sports and other action-based photography. They're also great for video recording, as they can fluidly move focus from one subject to another, something contrast-detect AF systems alone struggle with. 5. Top-plate displayhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/T5Lv8AFaGXPtkQNoTnrTWH.jpg The Nikon Z7's top-plate LCD lets you see all key exposure information, together with information such as battery life and how many images you can fit on your card. Image credit: TechRadar Top plate displays are one of those features that are often reserved for mid-range and high-end mirrorless models, and while they're not essential they can be incredibly useful. They give you a quick snapshot of camera and shooting settings, without you having to look at the LCD or through the viewfinder. They can also be illuminated, so you can continue to view them in darker conditions. Current models with top-plate LCDs include Canon's EOS R, Fujifilm's X-H1, Nikon's Z6 and Z7, and Panasonic's S1 and S1R. 6. Vari-angle and tri-axis tilting screenshttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/he9Vg5pFd6WoDiXZVX2VG3.jpg The Fujifilm X-T3 is one of a handful of recent cameras to have an LCD that can not only tilt up and down, but can also be pulled sideways. Image credit: TechRadar The LCD screens on most of today's cameras can be physically adjusted away from the body in one of three ways. The first method, which is used by the Nikon Z6 and Sony A7 III, allows you to pull the screen towards you, and tilt it up and down. This is great for shooting from the ground or up high, but it's the least flexible option available, and such screens can't be adjusted to face forwards. The second system has the screen mounted via a small hinge to the side of the camera, a design currently in use on the Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II and the Canon EOS R. This allows for the broadest movements, including a full 180-degree spin to face forwards, and it also means you can protect the display when the camera isn't in use by folding it to face the camera body. The third method is a relatively new one. The screen tilts up and down as in the first example, but you can also pull it sideways. This design, seen on the Fujifilm X-T3 and Panasonic S1, makes it easy to use the camera in portrait orientation when shooting down low or up high. Which type of screen you go for depends on how and what you shoot. Some photographers prefer the first system, but others may require a broader range of movements, such as for videography, selfies or groups shots, and when shooting from more unorthodox angles. 7. Eye detectionhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/dYBz7Cf8G4embpdxdcqSyD.jpg Shoot a lot of portraits? Eye detection will help you get focus precisely where it's most important. Image credit: TechRadar Face detection is now an established part of the modern camera's feature set, and the tech works well on most cameras. But in recent years, manufacturers have made great efforts to improve their AF systems still further by adding eye detection. Right now, the best systems can detect eyes and continue to track them as the subject moves, and some can even work with animals – great if you like to photograph your pets. This enables you to ensure that eyes are sharp and focused, without you having to make the effort to place a small focusing point precisely over that area; all you need to do is make sure the feature is enabled, and you'll be able to see it working in real time. 8. Silent shutterhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/onn5YxWPiHdFsZXKowJAke.jpg Silent shutters let you go about capturing images discreetly. Image credit: TechRadar Mechanical shutters, the kind that have long been used inside DSLRs, are also found in mirrorless cameras, and these can be a little noisy in use – particularly when you're capturing rapid bursts of images. Fortunately, electronic 'silent' shutters, which enable you to carry on taking images discreetly when you need to, are now an option on many mirrorless cameras. These are ideal when photographing inside a place of worship or a museum, or during any kind of formal or business event, or when trying to grab a shot of your little one sleeping. Some mirrorless cameras don't offer this, though, and others may do but only on a particular scene mode, which is restrictive. If you feel like this might be useful for your specific photography, make sure to look up whether a camera you're thinking of buying offers this. 9. Weather resistancehttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/NjHEphF6YwcrjUibj4AsiG.jpg The Olympus O-MD E-M1X, along with a handful of other mirrorless cameras, will happily withstand a splash of water or dusty conditions. Image credit: Olympus Whether you only tend to shoot in bad weather on occasion, or your focus is landscapes, nature or anything else that requires you to be outdoors for prolonged periods of time, knowing your camera can resist the rain, cold and dust is vital if it's to stay protected. Fortunately many of today's mirrorless cameras, from Nikon's Z6 and Canon's EOS R through to Panasonic S1, Sony's A7R III and Fujifilm X-T3, boast some sort of protection. While you can't exactly take these for a swim, more often than not they'll be protected well enough to ensure that droplets or splashes of water can't get inside, and they'll typically be guarded against dust and freezing temperatures too. One tip: make sure the lens you're using offers the same level of protection as your camera. 10. High-resolution modehttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/eT24RQoBoni97thjxJMCt5.jpg It's not a standard feature, but a High Resolution mode lets you capture masses of detail when you need to. Image credit: TechRadar The sensors inside mirrorless cameras today range from 12MP through to around 47MP, and even higher when medium format cameras are taken into account. That's more than sufficient for most people, but some cameras deliver a neat little trick that lets them output images at 80MP or 96MP, or even 187MP. These high-resolution modes work by capturing lots of images at once and then blending them together. You'll have to use a tripod in order to do this, but the results can be very impressive. Of course, few of us are in the habit of printing images the size of a lorry, so this feature is far from a necessity; however, it does allow you to capture more detail that you otherwise would be able to for slower and more considered photography such as landscapes, which can make enlarging or extreme cropping far easier. 22. YouTube is opening the floodgates on its Originals show library: Starting soon, you’ll be able to watch popular YouTube Premium shows like Cobra Kai, Lazer Team and Liza on Demand for free with ads. Previously, YouTube Originals were locked behind a paywall and were available to YouTube Premium and YouTube TV subscribers – but that’s set to change. Netflix vs Disney Plus: Here's how Disney Plus will stack up against NetflixAmazon Prime subscriber? These are the best Amazon Prime shows in 2019Love TVs? Don't miss our review of the LG C9 OLEDThat said, there are two caveats here: The first is that not all shows will be available for free immediately, nor will they stay that way indefinitely. (Basically, shows could move between paid and free at any time, so you’ll have to move quick.) The other caveat is that the shows will have interstitial advertisements like you’d find on longer YouTube videos. The reason behind the shift in strategy is to give advertisers a premium placement spot – think primetime programming on traditional cable – and it could be used to help promote shows that might not otherwise have much of an audience. ...so it'll be like regular YouTube?Pretty much, yeah. According to a YouTube Blog post explaining the changes, a good number of these shows will become available to stream for free soon – and that will include the third season of its flagship show, Cobra Kai. Sure, these shows will now be competing against the 400 hours of YouTube content every minute to the site but, if YouTube wants to get serious about its premium content offering, this is a good way to start. 23. New research from Barracuda has revealed that account takeover attacks are one of the fastest growing email security threats as hackers set their sights on Microsoft Office 365 accounts. The IT security company recently analyzed account takeover attacks targeted at its customers to discover that 29 percent of organizations had their Office 365 accounts compromised by hackers in March of this year. In March alone, over 1.5m malicious and spam emails were sent from hacked Office 365 accounts highlighting the potential impact this security threat poses. One in five email attacks use compromised accountsPhishing scams account for half of all fraud attacksCloud security and the evolution of attack methodsHackers executed the account takeover attacks using a variety of methods including reusing stolen credentials, brute-force attacks, social engineering, phishing and even SMS to trick their victims into providing their account details. Account takeover attacksOffice 365 account takeover attacks begin with infiltration and many hackers impersonate Microsoft and other large firms as a means of tricking users into disclosing their login credentials. In fact, Microsoft is the most impersonated brand in the world with 1 in 3 attacks impersonating the company. Once an account has been compromised, hackers rarely launch an attack straightaway. Instead, they monitor email and track activity in the company to help maximize their chances of executing a successful attack. One trick that scammers use to avoid detection is setting up mailbox rules to hide or delete any emails they send from the compromised account. According to Barracuda's March 2019 analysis, hackers set up malicious rules to hider their activity in 34 percent of the nearly 4,000 compromised accounts. After the reconnaissance has been completed, cybercriminals use the harvested credentials to target other high-value accounts in an organization with executives and finance department employees being prime targets. They also use compromised accounts to monetize attacks by stealing personal, financial and confidential data to use it to commit identity theft, fraud and other crimes. To protect your business from account takeover attacks, Barracuda recommends using AI to scan your emails, deploying account takeover protection, using multi-factor authentication, monitoring inbox rules and suspicious logins and training employees to recognize and report attacks. 24. It has been a historic week for fans of virtual reality gaming: Just as Facebook dropped the details on the launch of the Oculus Rift S, Valve jumped in to offer up its own details on its high-end Valve Index VR headset. It was a one-two punch of premium VR news that will radically reshape the VR landscape that has been dominated, largely, by the cheaper, console-focused PlayStation VR. The only problem with all these new options, however, is that two brand-new headsets - plus the pre-existing (and very good) HTC Vive Pro - could paralyze potential adopters of high-end VR. If all this valuable VR hardware has you in a daze, allow us to clear up the confusion, call out the differences and generally compare the three best-performing headsets heading our way in 2019. Here's how the HTC Vive Pro, Oculus Rift S and Vive Index are stacking up. DesignAs head-mounted devices, there are some similarities between all three of these headsets, but they all take somewhat different approaches. The Oculus Rift S uses a Halo-style headband with a knob that tightens the band to fit snug on your head. This allows for less pressure against your face from the display housing. There's also an adjustable band that goes over the top of your head. The HTC Vive Pro and Valve Index use similar headband styles, with a tightening band that goes around the sides of your head and a top strap. This style can result in a bit more pressure on the front of your face. But, all three use a knob to dial in the tightness, making it very easy to take on and off and fit to different users heads. AudioThe Rift S features small speakers built into the headband for stereo audio, but also includes a 3.5mm headphone jack to use with your own headphones. The Vive Pro has built-on headphones that you can position over your ears as needed. Meanwhile, the Valve Index has a similar audio design to the Vive Pro, but uses small speakers that don't press directly onto the ears. Setup, cameras and connectivityAll three headsets require cables running from the headset to a powerful PC. The Valve Index has a cable that splits at the end into USB 3.0, DisplayPort 1.2, and 12V power connectors. The HTC Vive Pro cable connects to a breakout box with power, DisplayPort, and USB 3.0 connnections. The Oculus Rift S keeps it simplest with a cable the splits into a USB 3.0 and HDMI connector. All three headsets also have cameras on them. The Valve Index includes two cameras on the front that aim slightly downward, but they currently have no function. The HTC Vive has two on the front that aim straight ahead, and they can enable native hand and finger tracking in some programs. The Rift S has five cameras with two in front, two on the sides, and one on top, and these are used for tracking and pass-through of your surroundings when needed. As we'll explore more in the Tracking section of this comparison, the Rift S only needs the cameras built onto it for VR. The Vive Pro and Valve Index meanwhile also need external base station cameras to track the movement of the headsets and controllers. And, between the Vive Pro, Valve Index, and Rift S, there are considerable differences in display. Pretty much at the bottom of the stack is the Oculus Rift S. It uses a single 2560 x 1440 resolution fast-switch LCD panel with an 80Hz refresh rate. While this improves on the resolution of the original Rift, it reduces the speed of the refresh rate, and the LCD doesn't offer the rich blacks of OLED panels. The headset does use improved lenses that reduce reflective aspects we saw in the original Rift. But, there's only software IPD adjustment (for setting the distance between your pupils), which doesn't have as much range or effectiveness as a hardware slider than moves the screens and lenses. The HTC Vive Pro steps things up with its displays. It uses two separate AMOLED displays the combine for a 2880 x 1600 resolution and run at 90Hz for smoother motion. While AMOLED displays have their issues when it comes to screen-door effect in VR, the bumped up resolution of the Vive Pro mostly eliminates that problem. The Vive Pro offers a 110-degree field of view and hardware IPD adjustment. The Valve Index tops the field in most respects. With dual displays canted at 5-degrees, it's offering a 130-degree field of view with hardware IPD adjustment. And, that view is crisp with a combined resolution of 2880x1600. While that resolution matches the Vive Pro's, Valve is using LCD panels that have more subpixels than typical pentile OLED displays, making for clearer imagery. And, Valve tops all that off with a 120Hz refresh rate that can bump up to 144Hz, for incredibly smooth visuals that may dramatically improve immersion. While the LCD's in the Valve Index may not offer as impressive a contrast ratio as OLED's, the rest of the package seems like it'll help it stand above its competitors. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/wd9wdG6kQDUTg7t4jLV3u4.jpg TrackingWe'll start with the Oculus Rift S because it has a unique system compared to the others. The Rift S uses what's called inside-out tracking. Using the five cameras built onto the headset, the Rift S maps the area around you, and as you move, it changes your view in VR. It doesn't need external cameras to track its movement. This makes it the simplest to get set up. The cameras also track controller movements. However, with no cameras on the rear of the headset, the Rift S has to guess at their movement, and can't precisely track them behind users backs. Both the HTC Vive Pro and Valve Index use outside-in tracking. This requires external cameras placed around a play space to monitor the movements of the headset and controllers. Two cameras can effectively create a large play space and track controller movement even behind users backs. The setup process is more involved though. The overlap doesn't end there either, as both headsets can use the same SteamVR 1.0 and 2.0 base stations. ControllersThe Vive Pro uses the same wand controllers as the original Vive. They have side grip buttons, triggers, two thumb buttons and a touch wheel on top. The Rift S uses new controllers with side grips, triggers, two thumb buttons, a menu button and an analog stick. These buttons are capacitive as well, so the Rift S will detect when your thumb is resting on them even if they aren't depressed. The Valve Index controllers go much further. For one thing, they use straps that hold them to your hands, so you don't need to hold grip them to keep them in your hands. The also have triggers, two thumb buttons, a system button, a vertical touchpad for thumbs, an analog stick, and grip sensors. The combination of buttons, sensors, and pressure sensitivity allows for the controller to track each finger independently for more realistic and nuanced recreation of your hands in VR. Pricehttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/W5zvHjY5DTX52DWuuqTJVU.jpg Image Credit: TechRadar The Oculus Rift S really sets itself apart on price. At $399 (around £300, AU$550), it's the cheapest by far, and that price includes the headset, controllers, and everything else needed to use the Rift S. The Rift S also has easy access to the Oculus's list of exclusive games (though other headsets can access many of these games through workarounds). For ease of access to VR, this is definitely the winner, especially considering it doesn't demand as much from a PC to run. The HTC Vive Pro and Valve Index are both considerably expensive. The HTC Vive Pro headset alone costs $799 (£799, about AU$1,045), and to get two controllers and SteamVR 1.0 base station bundle, you'll add $299 (around £200/AU$400) to the price. The Valve Index actually manages to fly in under the HTC Vive Pro. For the headset alone, you'll pay $499 (£459, about AU$710). And, for a full bundle that include the Index controllers and SteamVR 2.0 base stations with enhanced range and field of view, you'll pay $999 (£919, about AU$1,425). You can save a bit of money on the HTC Vive Pro or Valve Index if you already have some other VR hardware, though. Both headsets can use each other's controllers and tracking base stations. So, for example, if you have Vive base stations and controllers, you can simply buy the Index headset and get full functionality. Still, both devices are more expensive, and with their higher-resolution, high-refresh-rate displays, they'll also require more powerful (read: expensive) PCs to run them. So which one is right for you?Without holding the Valve Index in our hands and playing some games with it, it's tough to say for certain which high-end headset will win the day. We certainly like the more affordable price of the Oculus Rift S as well as the way it tracks your movement without the use of any external base stations but its specs leave something to be desired. That said, if you want the most premium VR package, the Valve Index is worth waiting for - its controllers add another layer of immersion to VR and it has a higher field-of-view, a really important specification when it comes to VR gaming. Last but not least, the HTC Vive Pro might make the most sense for creatives and VR arcade owners thanks to its high-res screen and compatibility with third-party hardware - however, it could be obsolete after the Valve Index arrives later this year. For now, though, it's a tried-and-true gaming headset that's a significant step up from the original Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. Overall, we have high hopes that the Valve Index will be everything the company promised years ago when it said it was working on virtual reality, and it could be the game-changing hardware the PC needs to catch up with PlayStation VR. http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/digital-home/~4/_P9w8ERcdl4
