Picking the best camera phone in 2019 has gotten harder, with new front-runners in recent months, including Google, Huawei and Samsung. Surprise, they're all better than iPhone when it comes to taking photos. Apple's competition has caught up. Our testing doesn't come down to the latest iPhone or the camera with the most megapixels. So much of the camera unit's quality is determined by how well the smartphone has optimized its software to snap photos or record videos. Note: We're always updating this best camera phone list, and as new software tweaks happen and additional phones come out, we'll keep everything fresh and continue to test everything we get our hands on. It's also important to consider which photos you'd want to capture, since some smartphone cameras can handle certain scenarios better than others. We’ve tested all of the top camera phones in a multitude of lighting conditions, scenarios, and with a wide range of subjects. Knowing how each camera performs at different shooting tasks will help you determine which can capture the moments you want to save. So, before you settle on the best camera phone for you, you’ll want to figure out your photographic needs. Great front-facing sensors with a wide-angle lens (or two) to snap better selfies? An array of different sensors on the back for versatile shooting? Knowing will help you decide which phone best suits your uses. Want to know more about dual-cameras? Check out our video below. Beyond the specs and capabilities of the camera itself, there are a number of aspects about the phone you’ll also want to consider. For example, getting a high-storage option or one that supports a microSD card will be helpful if you capture lots of 4K video. It's also worth thinking about battery size and screen quality - if you're going to be heading out all day and doing longer photography sessions, you'll need a battery that can keep up. And if you're mostly going to look at your photos on the phone, then a phone with OLED screen technology can really make your snaps pop - but if it's social media, or even printing out your photos, that's your plan then you've got a wider array of options. We've listed all that information below, along with some of our top test snaps so you can make the right decision when it comes to choosing your next camera phone. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/uwcuLKrCoQuV66NG6ZuXq5.jpg The Huawei P30 Pro has been meticiously engineered to be the best cameras phone, narrowly passing the single-lens rear Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL cameras in terms of quality. How? Two ways: it's the best low-light performer we've tested and its 'periscope' telephoto lens takes astounding optically zoomed-in shots at a distance. There were a lot of cameras to test on this phone, including four on the back: a 40MP main lens, an 8MP telephoto lens, a 20MP ultra-wide lens, and then a ToF (time-of-flight) camera to sense depth for portrait photos. The Huawei P30 Pro camera also uses an RYYB (red yellow yellow blue) sensor instead of the industry standard RGB (red green blue) sensor to capture more light, and it shows. The snaps we took for our review had more detail and less shadow than the competition, yet they didn't look completely overexposed. It's a fine balance that few phone manufacturers get right with their tiny cameras and limited software. It's all amazing for a smartphone, but not entirely perfect. We did notice some purple fringing in areas, and the camera software controls aren't always responsive when switching between ultra-wide, 5x zoom, 10x zoom and digital 50x zoom. But the fact that you can get insanely close to objects with a 50x zoom and also shoot at night as if all of the lights were on really sets a new bar for camera phones in 2019. Read our full review: Huawei P30 Pro http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/mSr3Ghg36ueQJ7NFGXdKvH.jpg The Google Pixel 3 is the second best camera phone you can buy right now, and at times, offers better colors compared to even the Huawei P30 Pro. So if you prefer a pure Android software experience, don't hesitate to consider this runner-up. We also like the fact that you get the choice of two handsets sizes, with both the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL boasting the same camera setup. While most of the other handsets in our best camera phone round-up have at least two rear cameras, the Pixel devices come with just a single rear snapper. These cameras are extremely powerful though, with an intuitive interface and AI smarts adapting fantastically to any scenario, be it beautiful vistas or low-light portraits. What sets Google's 12.2MP rear camera apart from the competition is its consistency. We got sharper, slightly brighter photos from the Pixel 3 and 3 XL versus the iPhone XS Max (overly warm color tones), Samsung Galaxy Note 9 (not always the best HDR) and Huawei P20 Pro (frequently over-sharpened). Behind-the-scenes, Google's dedicated Pixel Visual Core chip and machine-learning software are the magic that recognize what photos should look like and which shots you'll actually want. If there's one thing Google knows how to do, it's processing data and perfecting algorithms. Where it loses out, though is in its new Night Mode for long exposure shots. The Huawei P30 Pro is slightly better, even though Google does a good job as well. it's also not as vertisible on the back, without an ultra-wide or a telephoto lens. And let's not forget, both phones also have dual front-facing cameras, giving you great portrait-mode selfies with beautifully blurred backgrounds. Read our full reviews: Google Pixel 3 | Google Pixel 3 XL http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/CpmnCnhQGxT98XuVfzaezk.jpg The Galaxy S10 Plus, along with the Samsung Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10e, debut cameras new to Samsung owners. In addition to an improved regular camera and a 2x optical telephoto lens on the S10 and S10 Plus, there's also a 123-degree ultra-wide lens on the back of the trio of phones. We found the Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus to be extremely versatile and fun to shoot with. This is mainly down to its best-in-class camera software. It's feature-packed with modes like Color Point. It's a Live Focus (bokeh) mode that masks the background in grayscale, while letting your subject pop. You can change this in post (to become a blur or a swirling blur) and slide the intensity up and down. It's our favorite new camera mode of 2019. Where does it fall short? Samsung's photos apply aggressive smoothing to mask noise in low-light, preventing it from topping the Google Pixel 3 and Huawei P30 Pro. You're not going to get the very best shots next to those phones, but we've still consider them really good and the huge 6.4-inch display to be the best. Note: the Samsung Galaxy S10e has the new ultra-wide lens, but lacks the telephoto lens, while the standard S10 lacks the dual-front facing camera of the Plus (though we didn't see much difference between portrait selfies on the Plus and the normal S10). Read our full review: Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/VaRHXSyqXCQcgXECrz6yyV.jpg With three rear cameras the Huawei Mate 20 Pro offers a highly versatile camera phone experience. The P20 Pro ushered in this era of great Huawei cameras, and the Mate 20 Pro inherits its 40MP wide-angle f/1.8 lens and 8MP, f/2.4 3x telephoto with OIS and then builds on it further. Rounding out that trio of rear-facing cameras is the new star, an ultra-wide 16MP, f/2.2 lens. It expands the Mate 20 Pro's feature set, letting you take a wider array of photos from limited positions. Even for casual shooting, it makes life easier when trying to fit a bunch of far-flung elements in the same photo. The Mate 20 Pro's overall low-light performance is superior to that of most other smartphones we tested, especially with its seconds-long-exposure Night Mode. The phone's 3x telephoto does a great job of snagging distant shots, and the hybrid 5x zoom adds a digital blend to give you a bit more reach. It’s not perfect, but in our comparative testing, it outdid some digital-only zooms like on the Google Pixel 3. There's a host of other features in the camera app on the Mate 20 Pro too, allowing you to really fine tune and tinker with the photography experience. Read our full review: Huawei Mate 20 Pro http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/TTkqXFkwpMSkqv2FeA4xpi.jpg The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 builds on the strong camera offering of the Galaxy S9 Plus, with a number of small enhancements making it even better. The result is a handset which is comfortable shooting in any scenario, including in low light, for some truly impressive shots. The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 camera identifies and adapts to various subjects with a new scene-optimizer feature. It adjusts the white balance and color based on 20 subjects as varied as sunsets, flowers, food, birds, text and so forth. Compared to even the six-month-old S9 Plus, the Note 9 camera captures more detail, but you'll have to squint to see the differences. As this is a Note device, you get Samsung's S Pen stylus included with the handset, and you can use the button on this as a remote shutter key. It means you can set the Galaxy Note 9 down on a surface and walk away from it and still snap a shot using the S Pen. It's a relatively minor perk, but one we enjoy using. One slight mark against the Note 9 is its lack of HDR video recording, but for many this won't be an issue. Read our full review: Samsung Galaxy Note 9 http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/FA2JDKCtEFJgJ8nQorgweK.jpg Apple's latest iPhone duo boast powerful dual rear cameras, but it's not just the specs that appeal about the firm's mobile photography experience - it's also the ease of use of their smartphone snappers. The iPhone camera app is well known for being a simple, clutter-free interface, focused on taking great snaps every time with minimal controls, modes and settings for the user to worry about. It means that you don't quite get the same breath of shooting options as you do on the likes of the Samsungs and Huaweis, but the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max boast Apple's best smartphone snappers to date, with improvements to their low-light capabilities. If you want a phone to pull out and take a quick snap with minimum effort, the new iPhones are some of the best camera phones around. Apple has popularized the blurred background Bokeh effect, and Portrait Mode is one of the best implementations of the technology we've used on a smartphone, with a range of studio lighting effects adding extra pizzazz to your compositions. Both the iPhone XS and XS Max have exactly the same dual 12MP rear cameras, with the only differences between the two being screen size, battery size and their physical size. The 6.5-inch display on the iPhone XS Max gives you a huge viewfinder when it comes to snapping photos, but it comes with an equally huge price tag, with the still-expensive iPhone XS producing the same results in a smaller form factor. Read our full reviews: iPhone XS | iPhone XS Max http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/Y76SjxxM8THJdcTySbhuoA.jpg Earlier this year the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus was our best camera phone pick, fusing an excellent all-round smartphone experience with a highly accomplished photography offering. As you can see, it's now be usurped by a number of new camera phone releases, but it's still a fantastic offering which has now dropped in price since launch. Round the back you get two cameras, with the main 12MP sensor joined by a secondary 12MP sensor directly below it. The main sensor is rather special, as it has a world's-first-on-a-phone f/1.5 aperture, meaning that it performs fantastically well in low light. That's not all this sensor has up its sleeve though, as it also features Samsung's Dual Aperture Technology, allowing it to move from f/1.5 (for low light) to f/2.4 (reduces overexposure in bright scenes). Meanwhile the second camera allows you to take bokeh-rich photos, with parts of the image blurred while other parts are in focus. This is all wrapped up into an easy-to-use camera app with an automatic mode which takes care of most of the technological trickery, meaning all you have to do is point and shoot for a great snap. Read our full review: Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/hRBRdaZTKk9tH3FoLCwvq9.jpg The Huawei P20 Pro marked a significant shift for the Chinese firm, as it offers up one of best camera phone experiences on the market. It may have been superseded by the newer Mate 20 Pro, but take nothing away from the P20 Pro, this is still a top camera phone. Its party piece is the triple camera setup on its rear. The three cameras have a combined megapixel count of a staggering 68MP. Chuck the 24MP front facing camera into the mix as well and the phone has a total count of 92MP. How the Huawei P20 Pro triple camera worksMegapixels only get you so far, but the good news here is that the Huawei P20 Pro backs up its MP count with a strong suit of camera features. The main 40MP camera is backed up by a 20MP black and white sensor that helps with image processing, including decreasing noise and improving dynamic range - although as default the P20 Pro shoots at 10MP. The third rear camera has a 3x 'zoom' lens and an 8MP sensor, letting you zoom into a scene without using digital zoom - which means there's very little decrease in image quality when used. Read our full review: Huawei P20 Pro http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/vYqco93QWaPH9xVY5a3ABi.jpg You may be wondering how the Galaxy S9 is as far down as it is considering its bigger brother is above it. The reason is that, unlike the iPhone XS/XS Max and Google Pixel 3/3 XL which have identical cameras, Samsung gave the S9 Plus more photography prowess. The Galaxy S9 is still a top camera phone though, with its powerful 12MP rear snapper (there's just one on the back of this phone) an advancement on the excellent sensor found on its predecessor. Samsung has improved the camera's low-light capabilities on the Galaxy S9 with an industry leading f/1.5 aperture, and it's added super slo-mo, 960fps video recording to the mix as well. The camera is even smarter though as, like the S9 Plus, it boasts Samsung's Dual-Aperture Technology, allowing it to automatically switch between f/1.5 in low-light settings, to f/2.4 in bright scenes. The result? An easy to use camera, with an auto mode which, nine times out of ten, delivers a great photo with very little effort. Read our full review: Samsung Galaxy S9 http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/sTEufnpDmsjrFGThCrA43B.jpg The Sony Xperia XZ3 is the best camera phone from the Japanese firm to date, with its single 19MP rear snapper proving a powerful photography option. The user interface has been streamlined for starters, so there's less swiping to get to the various modes and frequently accessed settings are always shown on-screen, so there's minimal fiddling around when prepping your shot. In good light, detail is strong, and a nice amount of background blur can be achieved without calling on any bokeh modes. Where the Xperia XZ3 camera excels though is video. The digital stabilization works well in good light in particular, and the 4K HDR footage you can capture is simply breath-taking. Sony is also still the only manufacturer whose phone cameras are able to capture 960fps Full HD slow motion, with the competition capping out at 720p. It's totally unusable in medium to low light, but it's a nice feature to have when you're outdoors on a sunny day. Connected cars are only helpful if they have up-to-date information about road conditions, so Jaguar Land Rover has launched a new initiative that will encourage you to help other drivers in return for cryptocurrency By reporting traffic jams, potholes and other annoyances, you can earn credits to pay for everyday driving expenses like bridge tolls, parking fees, or a cup of coffee to keep you perky on long trips. Driverless cars explained: everything you need to knowYour complete guide to electric vehiclesHow to mine Bitcoin and other cryptocurrenciesThe system, known as Smart Wallet, is currently being tested at Jaguar Land Rover's software engineering base in Shannon, Ireland. Several vehicles have been kitted out with the tech, which can send the reported data to navigation providers or local authorities, which can warn other drivers or bring out the asphalt, respectively. Sharing is caringSmart Wallet isn't just a handy way to earn as you drive (and avoid the need to rummage for spare change for parking meters), it's part of Jaguar Land Rover's Destination Zero strategy, which has the lofty goal of eliminating emissions, congestion and accidents. The company also hopes that the better connected our cars are, the more we'll enjoy being at the wheel. Ultimately, it wants your vehicle to become a kind of third place where you relax and socialize when you're not at home or work. "In the future an autonomous car could drive itself to a charging station, recharge and pay, while its owner could choose to participate in the sharing economy – earning rewards from sharing useful data such as warning other cars of traffic jams," says Russell Vickers, Jaguar Land Rover software architect. The next big phone from Samsung is set to be the Galaxy Note 10, and we're only a few months away from the release. One of the more surprising things about the forthcoming handset seems to be the launch of multiple Note 10 variants, encompassing different screen sizes and a 5G model. The Note 10 Pro is the one we're interested in today, as that looks like it'll be packing a 4,500mAh battery in the mix. Lots of 5G phones are on the wayCheck out or hands-on Samsung Galaxy Fold reviewRead our full Samsung Galaxy S10 review According to a battery pack that flipped through the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), Samsung has asked for certification for a component bearing the model number EB-BN975ABU, which seems close to the expected SM-N975F model number for the Note 10. Just to confuse things, that was the model number expected for the 5G model of the Note 10, but leaker Ice Universe is claiming this battery will be used in the Note 10 4G: There are some questions about this though - the battery in question from the KIIT bears a February 2019 date, which seems a tad early for a phone launching in August - although of all brands, Samsung might be the most careful with the batteries it makes. The 4,500mAh power pack would be a significant jump from the 4,000mAh option in the Galaxy Note 9, which suggests additional features might be added to the mix in the shape of wider connectivity and could well mean this is the size of the 5G model's battery too. When you consider that the battery in 2011's original Galaxy Note was just 2,500mAh, you can see how far we've come... although these phones still struggle to last over a day comfortably. Xiaomi has finally announced the Xiaomi Mi 9 UK release date, its mid-range flagship smartphone. The handset is already available in China, as well as several European countries including Italy and Spain, but we hadn't heard of a UK launch until now. The phone will be available from April 30, and you can get it from Vodafone as well as Mi.com and the Mi store in London. Xiaomi hasn't shared pricing information yet, but we'll update this story when it does. Could the OnePlus 7 be the newest mid-range powerhouse? The iPhone 8 Plus is now as affordable as a mid-range handsetThese are the best camera phonesThe only smartphone Xiaomi has pushed in the UK previously is the Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro, so the Mi 9 is really the first flagship device it's released here – but, if it follows in the footsteps of fellow Chinese companies Huawei and OnePlus, we could see it become a much more recognisable brand when considering your next phone. What is the Xiaomi Mi 9?The Xiaomi Mi 9 is a high-end smartphone that's launched elsewhere at a price that's a lot lower than you'd expect for the spec. While Xiaomi hasn't announced prices yet for the UK market, the phone launched in Europe at €449 for the 64GB model and €499 for 128GB, which converts to roughly £390 and £430 respectively – not a lot for some of its impressive features. One of the noteworthy features of the Xiaomi Mi 9 is that it runs on a Snapdragon 855 chipset – it shares this with other high-end phones like the Samsung Galaxy S10, which cost almost double. In fact, the Mi 9 is one of the cheapest handsets you can get if you want such an advanced processor. On top of that, the Xiaomi Mi 9 has a triple-camera array, consisting of a 48MP main snapper joined by a 16MP sensor with an ultra-wide lens, and a 12MP telephoto shooter. We took some high-quality pictures with the phone – it's not quite on par with the Huawei P30, which also has three cameras, but it's close. The phone does have a few downsides, like its low battery capacity or the user interface (which looked a bit unattractive to us), but you can find out all about the positives and negatives by checking out our Xiaomi Mi 9 review. Expect to see the Xiaomi Mi 9 in Vodafone stores and online from April 30. When it launched the Xiaomi Mi 9 nearly topped this benchmark testhttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/digital-home/~4/qwIhuzNDscM

OnePlus is going to unveil its OnePlus 7 series of phones on May 14, but the top-end version is already making waves. DisplayMate has awarded the OnePlus 7 Pro an A+ display rating in its lab tests, making the upcoming phone's screen one of the best in the market. Even though the full shootout of the OnePlus 7 Pro won't be up until May 14, we now have some idea that the panel used by OnePlus will be more premium than previous devices from the firm. That matches rumors which have suggested the OnePlus 7 Pro screen will boast a QHD resolution - which would be the first time the company has offered a panel above Full HD. The rating means the OnePlus 7 Pro joins the ranks alongside phones such as the Samsung Galaxy S10, iPhone XS Max and Google Pixel 3 XL which also earned an A+ rating from DisplayMate. OnePlus 7 Pro confirmed to come with triple camerasDisplayMate Test Lab tests various displays with professional instruments and mathematical analysis for performance and comparisons with other products. As of now, OnePlus has only revealed that the phone offers better color accuracy, brightness, contrast and pixel density which in turn results in a sharper and enhanced viewing experience. In addition, OnePlus 7 Pro is also certified by VDE Testing and Certification Institute for its ability to filter blue light and will carry the Safety for Eyes certification at the time of launch. We still don't know the kind of display panel OnePlus 7 Pro has but according to some hints by the company and previous leaks, it features a 6.7-inch QHD+ (3120 x 1440 pixels) resolution display with the 90Hz refresh rate. The higher refresh rate allows a smooth touch experience and can be helpful in games as well. Additionally, the panel is rumored to be OLED and will be curved towards the edges. Recently, OnePlus also revealed that the OnePlus 7 Pro has three cameras on the back confirming earlier speculations. We'll know more details as the launch date nears. The ZTE Nubia Red Magic 3 is coming, and it’s a marked improvement on its predecessor, the midrange Red Magic Mars. The new model is a powerful smartphone with even more features to appeal to gamers – and it’s came to China on April 28 followed by a US, UK, EU and Canada release sometime in May. We got our hands on the Red Magic Mars at CES 2019 and loved its high specs and gaming features, especially at less than half the retail price of costly flagships like the Razer Phone 2 and Asus ROG Phone. But it seemed a bit underpowered with last year’s Snapdragon 845 and middling 16MP rear/8MP front camera. What do we know about the iPhone 11?The Samsung Galaxy Note 10 is set to be a powerful deviceThe OnePlus 7 is set to launch soon The Red Magic 3 is juicier in nearly every way. It packs the leading Snapdragon 855 chip, upgrades the battery to a colossal 5,000mAh (up from 3,800mAh) with up to 30W quick charging – enough to game on the phone on a 10-minute charge, per Nubia’s press release. The (still single-lens) rear camera now lets you shoot 48MP, while the front-facing shooter is 16MP. The remaining specs are just short of standout, with several tiers of memory and storage, starting at 6GB of RAM and 128GB of space. That can be upgraded to 8GB RAM/128GB storage or 12GB/256GB, which is hefty enough for all your gaming needs. Even better gaming featuresOf course, you’re looking at the Red Magic 3 to play games. The standout features from the Red Magic Mars return – mainly the touchpad “shoulder” buttons on the phone’s side, a switch that turns on a specialized gaming mode, and RGB lighting. But aside from the huge battery, the Red Magic 3 has another upgrade on its predecessor: instead of a copper cooling tube to vent heat (also present in the Asus and Razer gaming phones), Nubia’s new phone has liquid cooling and an internal fan, which the company claims increases heat transfer “by 500%.” We’ll have to test that claim, but it’s still a serious commitment to keeping the gaming phone cool while you’re in an intense gaming session. The AMOLED display’s resolution hasn’t been improved from the FHD+ of its predecessor, which is lower-rez than the Razer Phone 2’s QHD screen, but it’s now an impressive 6.5 inches (up from the Red Magic Mars’ 6-inch display). More screen real estate is good for gamers, as less will be taken up by their thumbs. Plus, the display has a 90hz refresh rate for more fluid gameplay, on par with the Asus ROG Phone but under the 120hz of the Razer Phone 2. That's a long way of saying that the Red Magic 3 is, on paper, a big upgrade that should make the phone competitive with leading (if not flagship) phones. Unfortunately, we still don’t know how much the phone will cost, so it’s unclear if the new phone will be as good of value as the Red Magic Mars – but either way, it’s shaping up to be a strong gaming phone for 2019. The Black Shark 2 has just launched – it's a gaming phone that rivals the Red Magic 3http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/digital-home/~4/fchXnCnkuSg

With the growing ubiquity of smartphones in everyday life, it’s unsurprising that users are forming bad habits and even addictions with their devices that ultimately affect their mental wellbeing. In response, there have been a number of developers making apps to limit an individual’s phone usage, even tech giants such as Google have introduced similar features for their own products, but a recent report from The New York Times suggests that Apple has been combating these services in its App Store. Apple macOS 10.15 may adapt even more iOS 12 features, like Screen TimeAnti-competition?Apple is another tech giant to have its own usage tracking software, with the Screen Time function seeing its release in iOS 12, but the Times’ report suggests that the Cupertino firm has made it deliberately difficult to run a competing app for the iPhone. “Over the past year, Apple has removed or restricted at least 11 of the 17 most downloaded screen-time and parental-control apps”, the report reads. “Some app makers with thousands of paying customers have shut down. Most others say their futures are in jeopardy.” When speaking with the developers of the affected apps, the Times’ noted that the “executives at the app makers believe they are being targeted because their apps could hurt Apple’s business. Apple’s tools, they add, aren’t as aggressive about limiting screen time and don’t provide as many options.” Google diagnoses our smartphone addiction, prescribes chill pillApple's responseApple’s vice president of marketing, Phil Schiller has responded to a question from a MacRumors reader addressing the issue, claiming that the apps in question were using a format that was fundamentally unsecure for their users. The apps utilized MDM (Mobile Device Management) in order to track every user action on their iPhone, a technology that was intended to be used purely for companies wishing to install their own software on employee devices in order to monitor their usage. The system would allow the developers of such monitoring apps to “have unrestricted access to manage your child’s device, know their location, track their app use, control their mail accounts, web surfing, camera use, network access, and even remotely erase their devices”, according to Schiller’s response. Apple, upon learning of the misuse of MDM technology, since contacted the app developers who were employing it in order to ask them to stop, according to Schiller, although he doesn’t mention explicitly what actions were taken after that. While it is well-known that Apple prides itself on its users’ security, it's understandable why developers are seeing the timing of the removal of their competing addiction-breaking apps as suspicious. New Honor 20 leak shows off the phone in a pink and white color
sincity posted a topic in Technology
We know the Honor 20 phones are coming on May 21, but we didn't know much about what they would look like... until now. A new leak shows off a subtle pink and white gradient backing for what we assume is the standard Honor 20. First posted to Weibo, the image shows a quad-lens rear camera that hints this is the Honor 20 Pro, as well as the sleek color scheme. It's certainly more revealing than the last image we saw of the Honor 20, which actually came from the phone maker itself – here the phone was hidden in a Moschino bag to mark a partnership with the fashion brand. Get ready for the OnePlus 7More news on the 2019 iPhonesNintendo Switch nears 10m salesAn earlier leak showed the same render in a teal color. You can see both images below – the three main camera lenses and a smaller 3D time-of-flight (ToF) depth sensor. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/pFjpTYaE5fcLQqt8A9uS4H.jpg Honor 20 Pro leak (credit: Weibo) In terms of internal specs and screen sizes we don't know too much about these upcoming phones, but expect mid-range components and a mid-range price to match when all is revealed in a few weeks' time. Based on the leaks and rumors we've come across so far, the Honor 20 Pro should end up featuring slightly higher specs or a slightly bigger screen than the standard model. And don't forget the Honor 20 Lite either – it sounds like this is going to have a triple-lens setup on the rear camera and might be an interesting option for those on a budget. Whatever Honor has ready to unveil on May 21, we're looking forward to seeing it and testing it out. We were impressed with what the Honor 10 had to offer last year, and it's successor should be a substantial upgrade. Abu Dhabi Media (ADM) has signed a deal with the Chinese search engine Sogou to develop AI-driven news anchors- a digital version of a regular anchor, in Arabic and English for its channels. The agreement was signed by Ali Bin Tamim, Director General of ADM, and Wang Yanfeng, General Manager of Voice Interaction Technology Centre at Sogou, in the presence of Omar Sultan Al Olama, UAE Minister of Artificial Intelligence. Yanfeng told TechRadar Middle East, that this is the first time that Sogou’s AI news anchor technology is being leveraged by an international media outside of China. China’s state news agency Xinhua has an AI anchor to report 365 days a year and 24 hours a day, in collaboration with Sogou in the Chinese language. Sogou will develop the English language for ADM within one year and the Arabic language following that. The anchor will be customized to resemble someone from the region. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/znAA8H4hGxA79yKhoHrnuY.jpg “The lifelike anchor is developed to simulate the facial movements, voice and gestures of real-life broadcasters through machine learning in real-time audio and video synthesis. Sogou’s technology not only provides solutions for traditional media channels but also works to facilitate more natural interactions between humans and machines” he said. Ali Bin Tamim, Director General of Abu Dhabi Media, said in a statement that the AI news anchor keeps pace with the company's efforts to develop all its brands according to strategic plans that aim to realize a quantum leap in providing media content across digital, TV, print, and audio platforms. ADM aims to create more quality content for the Arab WorldAl Olama said that the use of artificial intelligence and technological tools in the media sector will result in a qualitative leap forward within the media landscape in the UAE and the wider region. “The use of these advanced solutions will benefit the industry by enriching media content, supporting media research, and providing new opportunities for young professionals to build new skill sets suited to future media channels. The deployment of this advanced technology presents us with the opportunity to further define the future of the sector in a way that benefits all members of society.” Yanfeng said that the company is getting a lot of enquiries for its AI-driven technology from around the world and hopes to sign more agreements this year. “The technology can also be used for teachers, doctors and lawyers. Our next step is to launch an AI-driven lawyer in China next month,” he said. Google could be planning to get your smartphone to talk for you
sincity posted a topic in Technology
Google IO 2019 starts in just a few days, and we're seeing more details trickle out about exactly what Google has in store at its big developer event – including a new feature aimed at people with speech impairments. As 9to5Google notes, the events list for Google IO includes a mention of Project Euphoria, which is apparently "leveraging Google technologies to give people with speech impairments their voice back". The session is being hosted by accessibility advocate Elise Roy and Harvard professor Michael Brenner, who is also a member of the Google Accelerated Science team. Windows and Android get friendlierThe iPhone 11 leaks keep on comingGet Android to read you a storyJoin those various dots together and it sounds like Project Euphoria could be the latest accessibility feature to hit Android, perhaps with the Android Q roll out: and it's potentially going to get your smartphone to talk for you. Wait and seeWe've seen Google demonstrate voice synthesizer technologies before – at last year's Google IO event for example, when it showed off how it was adding new voices to the Google Assistant platform. Project Euphoria is listed under an event called Designing for Accessibility, so it's not certain that this is a feature that's ready to go yet – it might be something that's launched further down the line. It could also be a standalone device rather than an app or a feature built into Android, but we're betting that some kind of machine learning is involved somewhere. We should hear more about this and plenty of other technologies and software that Google is working on when IO gets underway on May 7. As usual, we'll be bringing you all the news from the event. There's now no shortage of leaks and rumors around the upcoming iPhone 11 phones, and we just got another tidbit of information to chew over: the successor to the iPhone XR is apparently getting a dual-lens rear camera this year. That's according to Japanese blog Mac Otakara, which says it has its information directly from those in the know in the supply chain in China. The iPhone XR 2 – or iPhone XI R? – is going to come with a wide angle lens and a telephoto lens just like the current iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max, the report says, which should mean a better portrait mode and 2x optical zoom will be on offer. The iPhone 11 in 360 degreesHow good are the new AirPods?Apple preps a 5G iPad ProIt's actually a rumor we've heard before, so you can count this as a conformation of sorts for what Apple is planning. The iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Max, meanwhile, will get upgrades to triple-lens rear cameras. Glass and portsAccording to Mac Otakara, two out of the three lenses on the more expensive iPhones of 2019 will also be shared with the new iPhone XR model, which should help to keep manufacturing costs down. All three iPhone 2019 models are being tipped to use 3D-molded glass for the back of the phones, possibly covering up the rear camera bump, the new report says. There's also a prediction that Apple could include more powerful 18W USB-C chargers with its iPhone models this year – although the Lightning port will be retained, and Apple will bundle USB-C-to-Lightning connectors with the devices. Add it to the pile of iPhone 11 rumors we've heard so far, covering everything from air sensors to bigger batteries. As usual, the new handsets are expected to be officially unveiled in September. In May 2019, Dubai-based venture capital firm ASA Ventures is starting a 12-week start-up booster programme called RevUp to give a helping hand to startups. Venture capital (VC) is a financial lifeline for startups to keep them afloat as it goes through the requisite stages in its life cycle- especially at early stages when the company doesn’t have many customers or clients. VCs usually choose startups according to a specific stage or sector, depending on their investment mandate. It goes without saying that a percentage of the equity goes to the VC, and in a perfect world, where every startup wins, so does the VC. Danish Rizvi, Chief Operating Officer at ASA Ventures, told TechRadar Middle East that the days of the traditional VCs are over where funding is the only thing that an entrepreneur needs and will spell the difference between failure and success. Say hello to VC 2.0With the digital revolution, Rizvi says that entrepreneurs need someone other than themselves working on aspects of the business that they cannot single-handedly run during early stages. “We add value to the start-up landscape and aim to change the current perception of VCs from being just a financial lifeline to VC 2.0.” He said that VC2.0 means providing start-ups with non-financial support and giving entrepreneurs access to the resources they wouldn’t otherwise have at such an early stage- all while adding real value to them. ASA has about 200 people to provide support for start-ups in sales, marketing, technology development, etc. “Our target is to make the start-up profitable in three months. During these three months, we provide all the resources. It is a target for us as well as for the startups. Apart from that, we train them on fundraising and put them in different expos to showcase them,” he said. If liquidity is needed, ASA can pump between $20,000 and $2 million with equity stake between 5 and 85 percent. More and more startups in Dubai need support beyond funding to become successful, and thus ASA Ventures becomes the co-founder that will work to make sure the startup comes out on top. “We become equity partners and we don’t charge commissions. If it is good or bad, we share it equally. As we are investing our money, we want to make sure that what the start-up is doing is good at the end of the day and that is the model we have created,” he said. ASA Ventures was started in Portugal in 2003 and moved to Dubai in 2013. The VC’s target is five startups every three months. It has operations in Portugal, Saudi Arabia, UK, Mauritius, India and Pakistan and aims to spread wings into Malaysia, Singapore and Oman. Nintendo Switch Online has nearly reached 10 million users, according to a financial statement released by the company on Friday, April 26. That's a fairly substantial amount considering the service launched less than a year ago and, when compared to the system's 35 million unit sales number, means that nearly one-in-three Switch owners subscribe to the service. As you'd expect for a nascent service still in its first year, Nintendo Switch Online is still trailing the two other console subscription services – Xbox Live Gold and PlayStation Plus – by 50 million and 26 million users respectively. Crucially, both those services had years to reach their current state. While Nintendo Switch Online might not have the same number of users that Microsoft and Sony have, Nintendo's service does have a serious price advantage: Nintendo Switch Online only costs $20 (£18, AU$30) per year, compared to the $60 (£50, AU$80) price tags of PlayStation Plus and Xbox Live Gold. In the same report Nintendo also gave shareholders a brief glimpse of what's coming next for the system, citing Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit's April release, Super Mario Maker 2's June release date and Fire Emblem: Three Houses' July release date as the company's next big launches. Last but not least, Nintendo told share holders to expect Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, Animal Crossing and The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening to arrive at some point later this year – all titles eagerly awaited by fans. Alongside the draft release of the configuration baseline settings for Windows 10 v1903 and Windows Server v1903, Microsoft has revealed its plan to do away with password expiration policies beginning with the Windows 10's May update. Once these policies are removed, organizations should replace them with modern and improved password-security practices such as multi-factor authentication, detection of attacks aimed at guessing passwords, detection of anomalous log on attempts and the enforcement of banned password lists. Microsoft offered further insight on these recommendations, saying: “While we recommend these alternatives, they cannot be expressed or enforced with our recommended security configuration baselines, which are built on Windows’ built-in Group Policy settings and cannot include customer-specific values." Microsoft decides expiring passwords are no longer useful for Windows 10The dangers of password sharing at workMicrosoft expands open data push According to the company's principal consultant Aaron Margosis, the password expiration mechanism is a flawed defense method because once a password is stolen, mitigation measures should be taken immediately as opposed to when the password expires. Password expiry policiesMicrosoft also made the point that its soon to be removed password expiration policies are only a defense against the probability that a password will be stolen while its still valid and used by an unauthorized entity. Essentially the company is allowing organizations to choose the security measures that best suit their needs without contradicting its own guidance. The recently published security baseline draft also proposes removing the enforcement of built-in administrator and guest accounts being disabled by default. Administrators would then be able to enable the two accounts when they need to though the removal of the policy does not mean that these accounts will be enabled by default. It's worth keeping in mind that this is just a draft release and things could change before it is finalized though most experts agree that organizations have outgrown password expiration policies as a means of securing their accounts. A new security flaw found in devices such as smartphones and tables using Qualcomm chipsets has the potential to allow an attacker to retrieve private data and encryption keys stored in a secure area of the chipset called the Qualcomm Secure Execution Environment (QSEE). The chip maker deployed patches for this vulnerability (CVE-2018-11976) earlier this month but the slow pace of Android updates could leave some smartphones and tablets vulnerable for years to come. Hundreds of millions of Android devices currently use Qualcomm chips and the vulnerability impacts how they handle data processed inside the Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) QSEE. Apple and Qualcomm share spoils in court ahead of major rulingTrump blocks Qualcomm takeover attemptQualcomm: Wi-Fi 6 and Mesh Networks driving 'revival' in home networkingThe QSEE is a hardware-isolated area on the company's chips where app developers and Android itself can send data to be processed safely and securely in such a way that it is secluded from the operating system and any other apps installed on the device. Private encryption keys and passwords are often processed inside the QSEE and the bug could leave this sensitive information exposed to hackers. QSEENCC Group's Keegan Ryan first discovered that Qualcomm's implementation of the ECDSA cryptographic signing algorithm could be exploited to retrieve data processed inside the QSEE secure area of its processors in March of last year. A potential attacker would need root access to a device to exploit the vulnerability but this has become easier for cybercriminals to do now that malware that can gain root access on Android devices is quite common and can even be found on the Google Play Store. Ryan detailed how he discovered this vulnerability in a recently published white paper in which he explained how he used a tool called Cachegrab to analyze the memory caches of Qualcomm's chips to identify small leaks in the ECDSA cyptographic data-signing process, saying: "We found two locations in the multiplication algorithm which leak information about the nonce. Both of these locations contain countermeasures against side-channel attacks, but due to the spatial and temporal resolution of our microarchitectural attacks, it is possible to overcome these countermeasures and distinguish a few bits of the nonce. These few bits are enough to recover 256-bit ECDSA keys." Ryan notified Qualcomm about the security flaw last year and the company has since released firmware patches that were a part of Google's Android April 2019 security update. If you use an Android device with a Qualcomm chip for sensitive business, it is highly recommend that you update your smartphone with the latest Android OS security patch. Get ready to mark your calendar because Amazon Prime Day 2019 is only a couple of months away. The tech giant hasn't officially announced the date, but based on previous years we know the big shopping event will be held in mid-July. Prime Day first launched in 2015 and has grown into the biggest shopping day of the year with Prime Day 2018 even surpassing Cyber Monday and Black Friday. Last year's Prime Day had 89 million visitors that logged on to the site with 100 million products purchased during the sale event. Globally it was the biggest day of sales in Amazon’s history, and we expect Amazon Prime Day 2019 to be even bigger. It didn't just increase in terms of territories or numbers, but the sale itself lasted longer too. Where 2017's Prime Day ran for only one day (well, 30 hours), 2018 ran for a day and a half (36 hours). We expect this year's sale to last even longer, so Prime members will have even more time snag the hottest deals of the year. Last year's Prime Day was also the first year that discounts were extended to local Whole Foods Market stores. Prime members were able to save on popular grocery items and earned rewards and cash back through Amazon's site. Read on to learn what we can expect for this year's Prime Day and everything we've learned from last year's Prime Day. When is Amazon Prime Day 2019?Even though Amazon hasn't announced the exact date of the big day, we can take a pretty good guess based on previous years. Last year Prime Day went live on Monday, July 16 at 3 PM ET and lasted for 36 hours. Past years the event only lasted for 24 or 30 hours and happened between July 10 and 12. Thanks to the World Cup, Prime Day started later in the month last year. We predict this year they'll stick to their original event dates and start Prime Day on Monday, July 8, although July 16 is our next best bet. The big question is whether the sale will be extended beyond past years. Each year the sale has been lengthened so we assume this year that you could see the longest Prime Day yet. Last year Amazon didn't formally announce the dates of Prime Day till only a few weeks before the big event. Thanks to some snooping from the TechRadar team, we were able to figure out the date a full month before it was announced. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/831811ad822a4c1dae233baf7b1358a3.jpg Image credit: Amazon What were the best-selling items from Prime Day 2018?Prime members around the world purchased more than 100 million products during the 2018 Prime Day event. The top-selling items from last year's Prime Day included a mixture of home goods, electronics, and Amazon devices. In fact, it was the biggest event ever for Amazon devices with the Fire TV Stick and Echo Dot leading the pack of best-selling items worldwide. The top selling products in the US from Prime Day 2018 consisted of the 6-Qt Instant Pot, Fire TV stick, Echo Dot, 23andMe DNA Test, and the LifeStraw personal water filter. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/UhagiiFxgwY9DoxeirqaGT.jpg Image credit: Shutterstock Prime Day and Whole FoodsLast year Prime Day extended its sale from devices and electronics to discounts on groceries at the Whole Foods Market chain. Amazon bought Whole Foods in 2017 and Prime Day 2018 was the first time they promoted the big sale event at the grocery store. Savings included price cuts on popular food items and discounts for first time users of the grocery delivery service Prime Now. Amazon also offered $10 back in Amazon credits to use on Prime Day for members that spent $10 at Whole Foods. Amazon credit card users also received double the rewards when they used their card at Whole Foods during the week leading up to Prime Day. We expect this year to be more discounts on groceries in-store as well promotions with the Amazon Rewards Card and Prime Now. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/CNgzfFXwxae3qhcf6PWhQ.jpg Image credit: Shutterstock How can I sign up for Amazon Prime? To participate in the big shopping event, you must be an Amazon Prime Member. Your membership will not only let you partake in Prime Day, but you'll also have access to Amazon Prime movies, books, music, photos, and more. You can sign up here for a 30-day trial and cancel at any time. All you need is an Amazon account with a valid credit card tied to the account. Once you sign up for your free trial, you'll have access to all the Prime benefits, receive free two-day shipping and partake in the biggest shopping event of the year. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/xvPq4qV6qh7KdFW9fzqdPA.jpg Image credit: Amazon What other retailers participate in Prime Day?Every year more and more retailers are trying to compete with the tech giant by participating in their own version of Prime Day. You'll find discounts on clothing, tech, home goods and more from a variety of online and local retailers. Last year Walmart joined in on Prime Day by offering free two-day shipping without membership fees and free same-day pickup on qualifying items. They also discounted a wide array of products that included TVs, Google Home devices, kitchen appliances, laptops and much more. Other big retailers like Target, Best Buy, Macy's and eBay also promoted their own one-day sale with discounts on best-selling items throughout their site. We expect this year that more retailers will participate in the July event and will even extend the one-day sale to a weeks worth of discounts. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/3hjsMnZST5S5ugZpAGZVjW.jpg Image credit: Amazon How much money did Amazon make on Prime Day?Amazon was predicted to gross $3.4 billion on Prime Day last year, although we don’t know if that prediction is accurate as Amazon doesn’t release such information. However, it did announce that third party sellers shifted a billion dollars of product in just one day. As for its own sales, Amazon was content to say that “sales this Prime Day surpassed Cyber Monday, Black Friday and the previous Prime Day, when comparing 36-hour periods, making this once again the biggest shopping event in Amazon history.” That’s a little sneaky, mind you: last Prime Day only ran for 24 hours, not 36. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/CUsRFdReAahsufehUPAEAP.jpg What were the best deals on Prime Day?As ever, some of the best deals on Prime Day were on Amazon’s own devices. The Echo Show dropped from $229.99 to $129.99, the Echo Spot from $129.99 to $99, the Echo Dot from $49.99 to $29.99, the Echo from $99.99 to $69.99 and the Echo Plus from $164.98 to $99. There was a big drop on the Amazon-owned Ring video doorbell pro too, which went from $249 to $174, and on the Echo Look camera: that went from $199.99 to $99.99. Kindles and Fire ranges got deep discounts. The Fire Stick went from $39.99 to $19.99 and the Fire TV Cube from $119.99 to $89.99 (we told you it was worth waiting a few weeks before Prime Day) while Fire Tablets dropped significantly: the Fire 7 went from $49.99 to an incredible $29.99, the Fire 10 from $149.99 to $99.99 and the Fire 7 Kids from $99.99 to $69.99. There were good deals on TVs too. In the US, the excellent TCL TVs were massively discounted and better known brands such as Hisense were chopped too: for example Hisense’s 43-inch 4K TV dropped from $349.99 to $239.99. The best phone deal we spotted in the US was a big drop on the Huawei Mate 10 Pro, which went from $799 to a much more affordable $549. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/DGQQv34WGyeFF43CpNPFDC.jpg Image credit: Amazon Why did Amazon crash on Prime Day? Did the crash cost it money?Amazon struggled to cope with traffic on Prime Day, an issue that affected not just the Amazon site but services such as Prime Video and Twitch. Customers found their shopping carts would suddenly empty, or links simply wouldn’t work, or they couldn’t access Amazon at all. The issues were largely confined to the US website and customers, although problems with Prime Video lasted well into the evening in the UK. Some sites got their calculators out and concluded that the worst outage, which lasted for 63 minutes, cost Amazon just under $100 million in lost sales. Amazon disagrees, saying that the effect on sales was “minimal”. CNBC has seen internal documents that describe what happened. First, it didn’t secure enough servers to cope with the demand; secondly, that shortage caused a “cascading series of failures” that knocked out key services; and thirdly, Amazon temporarily killed all international traffic to reduce the load. All of those things happened within the first 15 minutes of Prime Day. The outage wasn’t the only issue Amazon faced on Prime Day. There were also strikes in protest at the way it treats its workers. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/zDeRXMxKteqhAh7WnG3LHX.jpg Image credit: Amazon Why were workers striking and supporters urging Amazon boycotts on Prime Day?Prime Day wasn’t the first time Amazon has been accused of terrible working practices, but it was a great day to get the issue into the papers. Workers in Spain and Germany went on strike over working hours and conditions while activists urged people to send Amazon a message on Prime Day by boycotting it altogether over its treatment of workers and its tax arrangements. It was also marked by a surge in health and safety complaints from UK workers. As you’d expect, Amazon denies the allegations, with a spokesperson telling us: These allegations and the data are just not accurate — safety incidents in our fulfillment centers did not increase around Prime Day, they actually decreased from the previous week. We’re proud of our team and our workplace, and invite anyone to come see for themselves – we offer public tours of our buildings and you can learn more at amazonfctours.com." Amazon also told Wired that the Organise campaign behind the publicity was indulging in fake news. “To our knowledge, Organise doesn’t verify that respondents actually work for the company they claim to work for.” http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/E5c2dvXdcrSctZFW53MhDc.jpg Image credit: Amazon What could Amazon have done better on Prime Day?It should have anticipated and been able to cope with the load not just on its ecommerce site but on its cloud services too: we weren’t the only ones irritated because we couldn’t get our Preacher fix on Amazon Prime Video. It’s all the more embarrassing when you remember that Amazon provides the cloud infrastructure for many high-profile sites and services: Prime Day wasn’t a great ad for that side of its business. Our main criticisms aren’t technological, though. Navigating the deals was hopeless and many of the deals were laughable, especially in gaming: we frequently found much better console bundles on AO.com’s eBay page than we did on Amazon. Here’s a great example. On Prime Day, one of the flagship deals we identified was $50 off a set of Bose QuietComfort 25 headphones. That brought the price down from $299 to $249. Just three weeks later, Amazon US was listing the same headphones for $169. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/bTBHGzFAzG55BvAVPHNb4f.jpg Image credit: Amazon Will Amazon Prime Day 2019 do things differently?Yes. CNBC reports that Jeff Wilke, Amazon’s CEO of worldwide retail, has already demanded improvements to prevent a repeat the previous Prime Day’s capacity problems: “tech teams are already working to improve our architecture”. We’d like to think that Amazon will also improve the navigation and discoverability of its deals for Prime Day 2019, although we aren’t holding our collective breath: both factors’ general rubbishness didn’t stop Prime Day breaking all records, so there’s not much incentive for Amazon to change it unless it decides better navigation will drive significantly higher sales. But that's why we're here to show you the best Prime Day deals! It’s a safe bet that Prime Day 2019 will be longer. It’s already grown from one day to one and a half; further inflation seems inevitable. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/oPYcMSyMD8ykMMWjbX8yuR.jpg Image credit: Amazon What does all this mean for Black Friday and Cyber Monday? It’s clear that Amazon is prioritising Prime Day over Super Black Friday Deals Month or whatever convoluted name it’s going to give its Black Friday sales period in 2019: according to Digitalcommerce360.com, 67% of this year's Prime Day deals were lower than comparable deals on the preceding Black Friday. That’s not to say Amazon won’t take part in Black Friday and Cyber Monday. It will, and it’ll offer the same kind of discounting that we’ve seen in recent years. But Prime Day is more important to the firm, and we’d expect its discounts to be deeper, especially on its own devices. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/jXoeyBMLpDLNTiNzikK45b.jpg Image credit: Amazon Prime Day: why does it matter more to Amazon? There are some crucial differences between Prime Day and Black Friday. The first is that Prime Day is Amazon’s own day. It’s right there in the name, which of course refers to Amazon’s Prime membership programme and associated services. Amazon doesn’t own Black Friday, and that means ultimately it’s just another retailer shouting for attention – a massive retailer with a really loud voice, of course, but Black Friday is a sales event for the entire retail sector. It’s much harder for rivals to muscle in on something that Amazon has effectively created from thin air. The second and more important difference is that Black Friday doesn’t create new spending. It just moves it slightly. As we’ve discovered in recent years, the money people spend over the Black Friday period is money they were probably going to spend anyway: all Black Friday really does is concentrates pre-Christmas shopping in the last week of November. Prime Day spending is different in two ways. First of all, people aren’t spending the money they’d already planned to spend on Christmas presents. And secondly, they’re buying mainly for themselves, not for others. If you go back to the list of bestsellers there’s an awful lot of impulse buying in there: Instant Pots and Hue Lightstrips, frying pans and dishwasher tablets. This is new spending, not merely moving pre-planned spending. There’s another key benefit for Amazon. Its best-sellers on Prime Day weren’t just Amazon devices; they were Amazon devices that connect to Amazon services. Fire TVs, Kindle Fires, Echo devices, Alexa remotes. Each one of them connecting to Amazon Prime, and each one of them requiring a Prime membership to buy in the first place. So when Black Friday rolls around, Amazon will have a whole bunch of Prime members for whom shopping on Prime is the default, and who might want to enhance their Amazon-powered smart homes with Amazon-branded Black Friday deals. Prime Day means that for Amazon, Christmas now comes twice a year. http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/digital-home/~4/hA2khJgDgtM
