Huawei’s Emotion UI, or EMUI as it's more commonly known, has come a long way over the years. EMUI 9 did away with a lot of the clunkiness that burdened stock Android and improved on it with a UI implementation that feels natural, simple and intuitive. It brought features such as full-screen gesture navigation, GPU Turbo 2.0 and simplified menus which vastly improved user experience for a lot of Huawei users including those who own models as old as the Mate 9.

User adoption rates from EMUI 8 to 9 are nothing short of incredible. As of June 3, 2019, over 80 million users have upgraded to EMUI 9 with another 20 million expected to join their ranks by end of June. It is clear that users love the overall smoother experience that brings consistency across the OS from performance to UI design.

EMUI 9 was an innovative update that made life easier for several Huawei users. Huawei wishes to continue that innovation streak with their latest update, EMUI 9.1 that’s set to being a host of quality of life improvements and speed enhancements to make this the best version yet.

More storage and better performance with EROFS file system

How fast a system reads and writes files directly impacts performance and your overall experience with the phone. With EMUI 9.1, Huawei is revamping the way files are stored and treated on devices with a brand new file system, EROFS that improves read speeds by 20%. This means faster loading times, smoother response times and better overall system fluency.

But that’s not all, EROFS also optimizes files used up by the OS and now takes up 14% less storage than before leaving you more space for your personal files. Security is also beefed up with system files becoming read-only in order to shield from outside interference.

GPU Turbo 3.0

GPU Turbo is Huawei’s software-based hardware acceleration technology that improves graphics performance in Huawei handsets and uses GPU efficiency techniques to deliver top quality performance in mobile games.

EMUI 9.1 brings the next version of GPU Turbo that improves on the previous versions. The new iteration will cover 25 of the most popular games on the Google Play Store. GPU Turbo 3.0 also reduces chipset power consumption by 10% leading to noticeable improvements in system performance and resulting in a seamless gaming experience.

Minimalism done right

Huawei is committed to providing the best user experience possible and that means making user interactions simple, natural and uncomplicated. To achieve this Huawei’s redesigned EMUI to look more realistic and used nature for inspiration on color schemes and system aesthetics. This can be seen in various improvements brought to EMUI 9.1’s wallpapers, themes and app icons.

Another aesthetically pleasant quality of EMUI 9.1 is the subtle minimalism that can be found in every corner of the OS. From decluttered configuration menus to spaced-out app icons, the entire interface has been streamlined to be more easy on the eyes and effortless to use.

Smoother, simpler and more intelligent

The overall improved system response brings about a lot of extra benefits such as a more fluid touch experience that’s smoother than ever. One of our favorite features from EMUI 9 is gesture-based navigation that’s enabled by default and feels more responsive and natural to use in EMUI 9.1.

Flicking to go home and swiping in myriad of ways to switch between apps or open google Assistant feels more fluid on EMUI 9.1. That combined with accurate touch input makes using EMUI 9.1 an easy and natural experience that never gets in your way.

Aside from speed and performance enhancements, Huawei is also bring some unique features that intend to make you Huawei device a more intelligent partner to your daily life. Editing and sharing Highlight videos will be simpler with EMUI 9.1 and launching Google Assistant will just be a long press on the power button away.

EMUI 9.1 brings AR Measurement that uses Huawei’s advanced face recognition technology and TOF camera update to not only measure line segments but also the volume of an object. Fitness fanatics with the new update will be able to connect their Huawei devices to treadmills that support the function and get accurate fitness data from their workouts.

EMUI 9.1 will also see Huawei’s efforts to bring more synergy to mobile and computing devices by introducing OneHop that allows Huawei mobiles devices and Huawei’s MateBooks to share files with a single touch. Huawei is also working with car manufacturers around the world to allow EMUI 9.1 Huawei devices to unlock your car with NFC technology.

All these features sound and more are set to roll out to several Huawei and Honor devices in the near future. In addition to current flagships, EMUI 9 is set to roll out to the Mate 10 series, P20 series, Mate RS, Nova3, Mate 9 series, P10 series and Nova3i, bringing it to users of older devices.
