Photo credit: skeeze/CC0 Creative Commons Just occasionally on its journey through space, the moon passes into the Earth's deep shadow and turns red. The internet usually goes insane, and this January is no different in advance of Sunday/Monday's rare celestial event. In the pre-dawn hours in western Europe, and in late evening in North America and South America, a total lunar eclipse will occur for precisely 62 minutes, though the entire event technically lasts for just over five hours. Some call it a 'blood moon', which suggests it turns a deep, crimson colour. It does nothing of the sort, looking much more like the colour of the sun during a sunset. Others call it a 'super blood moon' because this full moon is slightly closer to Earth than most full moons, so looks very slightly larger. It's even being called a 'super wolf blood' moon because some Native Americans are said to have called January's full moon the wolf moon. Whatever the internet has decided to call it matters not, for on January 21/22 a magnificent total lunar eclipse will occur for the third time in a year, but for the last time for many years. Here's everything you need to know about this celestial grand finale. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/9jgcJrwZ3Xc5rcJvAWLdrd.jpg The coming total lunar eclipse will be easy to see with the naked eye, given clear skies. Photo credit: dlohner/CC0 Creative Commons What is a super blood wolf moon eclipse? The media tends to hype up eclipses these days (something astronomers who've happily watched these events alone for decades absolutely hate), and this coming lunar eclipse is being called a super blood wolf moon eclipse. Its slightly bigger size is hard to appreciate because as the moon enters Earth's outer shadow to kick-off the five-hour event, it will lose its full moon-like brightness and seem a weird muted grey. It will also be very high in the night sky, and without foreground or background the human brain lacks reference points, so has trouble figuring-out and comparing sizes. So in practice, you won't notice any difference in the Moon's size. Also, there are no wolves around the Moon! However, what you will notice is that the moon briefly (well, for 62 minutes) becomes a delicate, dynamically changing, and completely entrancing reddish colour, set against a sky full of stars. It’s a rare and unmissable sight. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/MBgn74WuCUkFWdKfC3TqZV.jpg The full moon will first lose it brightness before slowly turning red. Photo credit: jeanvdmeulen/CC0 Creative Commons What are the stages of the super blood wolf moon eclipse? The process goes something like this: the moon will first enter the Earth's outer shadow – its penumbra – and lose it brightness. Then it will begin to enter Earth's central shadow in space, and become partially eclipsed. That's a really weird sight, and worth seeing because only as over 50% of its disk gets eclipsed will you start to see the dark area turn reddish. However, it's really only when the moon is totally eclipsed that it looks completely red because the human eye no longer has to cope with subtle colour in darkness and bright white in the same view. After 62 minutes of redness, the whole process goes into reverse. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/GAvJHCPZw3B4k37gZmqTBj.jpg A partially eclipsed moon is a strange sight indeed. Credit: kasabubu/CC0 Creative Commons Why is the super blood wolf moon eclipse red?Blood-red? Actually, it won't go blood-red. The phrase 'blood moon' has religious connotations and doesn't accurately denote what colour our satellite will become when eclipsed. Rather than being a deep blood red, the moon will gradually turn a copper, then reddish colour, though the exact colour is up for debate. "We won't really know exactly what colour the moon becomes until it happens," says Tom Kerrs, an astronomer from the Royal Observatory Greenwich in London and author of Moongazing: Beginner’s guide to exploring the Moon. It will definitely turn reddish, but the depth of that color depends on particles in the atmosphere. "If there's a volcanic eruption in January somewhere around the world, that would make the eclipse look even redder because it would fill the Earth's atmosphere with dust," says Kerrs. "As the moon sinks lower into the sky it takes on a redder, more orange color by virtue of the scattering of light in the Earth's atmosphere," he explains, adding that the presence of more dust changes how the Earth's atmosphere filters light. "It would give us a deeper color," he says. Either way, it's a dynamic event, with the 62 minutes of totality displaying a wax and wane of various shades of red, orange and copper. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/NJbZHpyZfyXjrYM3bFzdvT.jpg These shots were taken over about five hours. Credit: skeeze/CC0 Creative Commons What are the exact times for the super blood wolf moon eclipse?Exactly half the world can see this event at the same time, but while in Western Europe it's an early morning event, in North and South America is occurs before midnight local time. Here are the times for lunar totality in some key cities and time zones that are well placed, with exact times for any location available (look for ‘total eclipse begins’ if that’s all you want to see). However, reckon on getting into position at least an hour before these times so you can see the partially eclipsed moon – it's just as weird a thing to see as a completely red moon. North & South America – Sunday, January 20 Pacific Standard Time (PST): 20:41-21:43 Mountain Standard Time (MST): 21:41-22:43 Central Standard Time (CST): 22:41-23:43 Eastern Standard Time (EST): 23:41-00:43 Bogota, Lima, Quito: 23:41-00:43 Western Europe & South America – Monday, January 21 Dublin, Lisbon London & Reykjavik: 04:41-05:43 Amsterdam, Brussels, Madrid & Paris: 05:41-06:43 Buenos Aires, Montevideo & Santiago: 01:41-02:43 São Paulo: 02:41-03:43 http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/CJguwwMX8qVtuW5XCZtbPC.jpg Only the top three shots here are of a totally eclipsed moon. Photo credit: ddouk/CC0 Creative Commons How to observe the super blood wolf moon eclipseFor those in North and South America, look up. This is the highest total lunar eclipse for many, many years, so arguably the easiest to see in recent (and future) times – unless cloud blocks the view. Light pollution isn't really an issue and it’s fine to look from your back garden or yard, though the darker the sky the more you will appreciate it when the bright stars of winter (particularly the sparkling Beehive Cluster near the Moon that night) become visible around the red Moon during totality. Standing somewhere where there's no direct light is a good idea (so switch off torches and flashlights, car headlights, kitchen lights, and stand away from street lights). You need no special equipment, though binoculars are a massive help for seeing surface on the detail of the moon – it's going to be pretty dim – and any small telescope or zoom lens on a camera massively helps. When is the next super blood wolf moon eclipse? As discussed, the name is mostly nonsense, but the next total lunar eclipse – almost identical to what you will see on January 20/21 – will next occur in May 2021 (for North and South America) and May 2022 (for Europe). So enjoy this spectacular satellite while you can! How to photograph the moonhttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/GGv1Ty3gZVA

The mighty Manny Pacquiao, despite being 40 years old, is still the favorite to beat his opponent this Saturday night in Las Vegas. Adrien Broner thinks differently as he has the WBA regular welterweight title in his sights and a place in the history books as a rare vanquisher of the Filipino legend. Watching a live stream of all the Pacquiao vs Broner action is easy, too - you can even watch for FREE in certain regions. Pacquiao might be older but he has lots of experience with this being his 70th fight. That gives him a 60-7-2 record with a total of 39 KOs and status as one of the all time legends to setp into the ring. In comparison, his American challenger, at 29 years old, sports a formidable record sheet of 33-3-1-1 and 24 KOs. As the former WBA welterweight champion and four division world champion, Broner is not to be underestimated. That said, Pacquiao is an eight division world champ as well as being former lineal and three time WBO welterweight champ – and of course there's he currently has the WBA title, too. There's talk of Pac-Man agreeing to a Floyd Mayweather rematch, drawing the fighter out of retirement, as a follow-up to this fight. But Broner thinks all the attention should be on him and his chances to cause an upset: "I’m not in awe of any fighter, especially Manny Pacquiao. I hope he’s in awe of me. I’m a one of a kind fighter too. I’ve made history in this sport. This is a defining moment in my career and it’s going to be one of the biggest nights of my life." Take a seat, strap on the VR headset and shoot ‘em up. According to Audi, that’s the future of in-car entertainment. Could it also be the application that finally sees virtual reality make it as a mainstream media? To find out, we flew all the way to Las Vegas for a pre-CES demo of a new technology Audi is backing, known as Holoride. It’s not just Audi involved, either. The German car maker is a minority partner in the new startup, which not only aims for industry-wide adoption from multiple car manufacturers, plus ride-hailing outfits including Uber. It also has backing from none other than Disney, who cooked up the slick software for the game Audi demoed. VR with a twistThe basic idea is simple enough, namely playing VR games in a car. It’s the detailed application that makes Holoride so exciting and intriguing. Hardware-wise, we’re talking Audi’s hot new E-tron all-electric SUV fitted out with Oculus Rift headsets and a high-performance PC. The game itself is a one-off for the demo based in Disney’s Marvel universe or more specifically the Avengers franchise. You play Rocket Raccoon rushing to Iron Man’s rescue as he flees the obligatory Thanos offensive. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/MYMHZtVvtJRzJH65Pie8GU.jpg Here’s where Holoride gets really clever. It’s plumbed directly into the car’s telematics. That means it can pick up data including steering angle, throttle position, brake application and navigation. In other words, the game knows not only what the car is doing in any given moment, it has a map of where it’s going. The upshot? Every movement of the E-tron is precisely mirrored in-game. Yup, every twitch of the steering wheel, every stomp of the brakes. In the game, you or rather Rocket is the gunner onboard Quill’s Milano ship, using the Oculus’ head tracking for aim and a single-button controller to unleash Rocket’s fury on the Thanos collective. As our E-tron was driven around a test track near Las Vegas, the trajectory of Rocket’s ship mirrored the car’s every move. Stupidly excitingAgainst all expectations, the technology really works. Using the E-tron as a sort of glorified force feedback gaming seat makes for a stupidly exciting and incredibly immersive experience. Add in some slick graphics from Disney and a typically wise-cracking Avengers script and you have not only a VR experience to remember, but also a car journey that seems to compress time, which is very much the point. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/sjwX3euJwNpAoMJf5tb5GU.jpg If anything, it might be too exciting. The five minute demo leaves you not only a little wired and strung out, but also a little nauseous, albeit perhaps not as much as you would expect given the intensity of the ride. The latter problem is something that’s familiar to both users of in car entertainment and VR gamers in a static environment. You might think combining the two is a vomitously bad idea. Not so, according to the co-founder of Holoride and Audi’s Head of Digital Business, Nils Wollny. He says this cutting-edge VR tech actually reduces in-car nausea. Update: New Moto G7 leaks include renders of the whole range, plus specs and pricing information. The Moto G6 has been out for a while and budget hawks now have their eyes fixed firmly on the horizon, in anticipation of the release of the Moto G7. First released back in 2013, the Moto G series has become one of parent company Lenovo’s most popular, certainly under the ‘Moto’ brand. It is known for redefining the expectations of those shopping at around the $250/£200/AU$400 mark, offering more bang for your buck than almost any of the competition. The Moto G6 family, with Plus and Play in tow, has been a particularly well-received addition to the clan – offering a tantalizing blend of premium design and reasonable price tags. But what will the Moto G7 offer, and what will it need to succeed in what will likely be an even more difficult and saturated market? News and rumors are starting to roll in and it might not be long until we get an official look at the next budget champion from Motorola. But in the meantime we'll be updating this page with everything we hear, and have come up with a wish list for what we want from it. Everything we know about the Moto G7 PlusCut to the chaseWhat is it? The next numbered phone in the Moto G seriesWhen is it out? Probably March 2019 at the earliestWhat will it cost? Probably at least $250/£219/AU$399Moto G7 release date and priceIf recent years are anything to go by, the earliest that the Moto G7 will be announced is the period of March to April 2019, but there aren't any release date rumors yes. As for price, the original device sold for around $180/£150, however it can be expected that the Moto G7 will launch with a price of roughly £250, £219, AU$399, given that this is what the Moto G6 started at. There are some rumors there, but only about the Moto G7 Play, which is said to cost €149 (around $170/£130/AU$235), and the Moto G7 Power, which is rumored to sell for €209 (roughly $240/£185/AU$330). These two models are thought to be lower-end than the standard Moto G7, so expect to pay more for the main model. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/FpDTNAtAkRmJbMNkvwnhRe.jpg Don't expect to see the Moto G7 for a while yet Moto G7 news and rumorsA Moto G7 specs list has leaked on HowToTechNaija, revealing that the phone will apparently have a 6.4-inch Full HD+ screen, a 3,500mAh battery, a dual-lens rear camera with 16MP and 5MP lenses, a 12MP front-facing camera, an octa-core chipset, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, a fingerprint scanner and Android 9 Pie. If accurate, that means a bigger screen and battery than the Moto G6, different cameras and a newer version of Android. Elsewhere we've heard that it might have a Snapdragon 660 chipset, while the Moto G7 Play could have a lower-end Snapdragon 632, and the Moto G7 Power may slot in at the bottom with a Snapdragon 625 chipset, along with a 5,000mAh battery and fast charging. The same source also says that the Moto G7 will be sold in black and white, the G7 Play in gold and blue, and the Moto G7 Power in black and lilac. They've also shared renders seemingly showing the range, which you can see below. As you can see, the standard Moto G7 is shown with a teardrop notch, a bezel below the screen, a dual-lens rear camera and what's likely a fingerprint scanner on the back. The Moto G7 Play and Power meanwhile have a larger notch and seemingly just a single-lens rear camera. We'd previously seen other renders supposedly showing the Moto G7. You can see them below and they're sourced by reputable leaker @OnLeaks for MySmartPrice and are apparently based on factory CADs (computer-aided designs). Other than possibly larger bezels these renders look much like the ones further up in this article. Leaks of the Moto G7 Play hint at an overall notch design for the G7 family. However, as you can see in the images further up, seemingly not every model will have a teardrop notch design. Moving back to the renders immediately above, the back is apparently made of curved glass and you can see the dual-lens camera and dual-LED flash. There's also a fingerprint scanner on the rear (rather than the front-facing one on the Moto G6), while a 3.5mm headphone jack sits on the bottom edge. Finally, dimensions are said to be 157 x 75.3 x 8mm, rising to 9.5mm at the camera bump. Of course, this is all just rumors and leaks for now, so take it with a pinch of salt. In other news, a source claims that the Moto G7 Power has - in addition to the previously mentioned 5,000mAh battery - a Snapdragon 632 chipset, 2GB, 3GB or 4GB of RAM, and 32GB or 64GB of storage. It also apparently has a 12MP f/2.0 rear camera and an 8MP f/2.2 front-facing one, while the screen is apparently a 6.22-inch HD+ one, and the phone apparently comes in indigo, blush, silver and black shades, which is a different selection of colors to those listed above. We've also seen a Geekbench benchmark for one of the Moto G7 handsets. It's listed as having a Snapdragon 625 chipset and 3GB of RAM, which suggests this is probably the Play or the Power. Its multi-core score of 4,759 is reasonably impressive though if this is one of the lower-end models. What we want to seeWe don’t know anything for certain about the Moto G7 at the moment, but based on our usage of the Moto G6 family, we’ve put together a few thoughts on what we feel the future should hold for the next main incarnation of the handset. 1. An AMOLED screenhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/irriaMUjGt6V9DmDNXoQSi.jpg For the G7 we'd like to see AMOLED over LCD The LCD vs AMOLED wars have raged on for some time now – but for pure crowd-pleasing color nothing can beat AMOLED. Typically reserved for more expensive devices, if Lenovo were able to bring a good panel – with infinite blacks and excellent contrast and sunlight legibility – to the G7 it would be a considerable coup. Having increased contrast and color is not only more pleasing to the eye, it also makes content more immersive, which would seriously benefit the earlier move in 2018 to a larger display size. Having AMOLED also allows for a ‘glance’ screen to be implemented and more, overall it is a very nice value add-on. 2. Front-firing speakersFor reasons unknown to science or common sense, in their early days phone speakers played music away from the person listening to it. Since that point, there have been various permutations, but it is usually those which fire towards the users that prove to be the best in both quality and utility. With large bezels both top and bottom, if Lenovo were to move the fingerprint sensor to the rear and embrace a good pair of clear and bassy front-firing speakers, the Moto G7 could become the ultimate media machine for those on a budget. While we did find the speaker on the G6 to be adequate in our review, its placement on the bottom of the device allows it to be all too easily muffled, and the single driver can’t manage much in the way of stereo separation. An upgrade here would be a real treat for the video-focused consumer. 3. A different second camera sensorhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/yfq4VFsGWQhH3ZPWXJCRBo.jpg There's plenty that could be done with the camera The two camera craze has brought with it a wide and wacky range of options for budding mobile photographers. From black and white sensors, to telephoto zooms and wide-angle lenses, manufacturers have a fun bag of tricks to play with. So it’s a slight shame that in the Moto G6, this second sensor is used merely for ‘depth’ – i.e. it is used for the Portrait mode so beloved at the moment. We would like to see Lenovo push the boat out slightly – offering a wide-angle effort such as that on the Moto X4, or a telephoto option to allow you to get closer to the action. The big tech of last year is trickling down to the budget end, and the time is right to include it. 4. Better photo skillsThe Moto G line has never been the home of those expecting the absolute utmost in photographic quality from their mobile snappers. Instead, it has offered respectable output and performance in most situations. However the competition from the likes of Xiaomi is really heating up in this regard, and the time has come to really make a break and produce something interesting. What does this mean? Better processing, a more refined camera app which works as quickly as those of the competition, better low light performance through the introduction of optical image stabilisation, all within Lenovo’s grasp and all to the benefit of the consumer, whether it is one or all of these chosen. 5. Better battery lifehttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/ShfhyftEFpq3dLs69y4A9j.jpg The Moto G6 does okay, but we want 2 days of life from the G7 When it comes to battery life, the standard Moto G6 is no slouch, generally being able to make it through the day. However, when we saw the huge 4,000mAh battery included with the lesser model, the Moto G6 Play, we couldn’t help but feel slightly conflicted. By including a larger battery with the new model, perhaps even removing the camera hump in the process by thickening up the phone a bit, Lenovo could really embrace the extra space included by having such a large screen. Two days of battery life should be no problem with such a large pack included as standard across the line – and would really give owners something to brag about down the pub. 6. A more powerful chipsetThe Moto G name is almost synonymous with the Snapdragon 400 series of chips, which has been used in most models since its inception. As the price has crept up however, so have the demands of the market and the consumer, leaving the Snapdragon 450 included with the G6 feeling slightly weedy in comparison to some rivals. For example, the Nokia 6.1 (2018) includes the now-popular Snapdragon 630 chipset, which offers increased energy efficiency and power over the 450 included in the G6. Moving to a slightly more powerful option would boost the premium fast feel of the handset, improve its longevity and benefit the overall experience of using it. 7. More color optionsIt is an old refrain – smartphone design has become boring. Everything released comes in white or black, or perhaps in muted gold, grey or blue. This is the result of market testing, of knowing what sells, however injecting a little personality into the Moto G line could help open it up to previously unknown markets. Much like the banana-colored Lumias of days past, it would be pleasant to see the maker of ThinkPad laptops transcend its heritage – let’s see a hot pink, a baby blue, or even better, a Huawei P20 Pro-style ‘Twilight’ option. To really stick out from the competition, Lenovo could do little better than to splash out on a few spiffy paint jobs. The October 2018 Update is now being automatically pushed to Windows 10 PCs as Microsoft restarts its ‘phased rollout’ process. Microsoft has just updated the ‘Windows 10 Version 1809 [October 2018 Update] Rollout Status’ to say that: “We are now starting our phased rollout to users via Windows Update, initially offering the update to devices we believe will have the best update experience based on our next generation machine learning model.” But didn’t Microsoft already restart the October 2018 Update in November of last year? Well, yes and no. Yes, it un-paused the total freeze on the update after resolving various critical problems, but no, it didn’t kick-off the full rollout process again at that point. What re-engaging the ‘phased rollout’ means is that Microsoft is now pushing the October 2018 Update automatically to Windows 10 machines, effectively forcing them to take on the upgrade (because with Windows 10 Home, when the upgrade hits your PC, there’s no option to defer it (aside from clunky workarounds). In other words, it’s business as usual really, and it seems Microsoft is now fully confident that it can push the October 2018 Update across the Windows 10 user base. As mentioned, though, certain computers still won’t have the upgrade pushed to them, with devices that will have the ‘best update experience’ being targeted by Microsoft’s AI and machine learning algorithms. Manual checkOf course, if you want the update right now and haven’t been offered it, you can always run a manual check for it. Microsoft notes that only advanced users should be doing this, though. Which is kind of a roundabout way of saying, if you’re greedy, grab it, and subsequently run into trouble, then you’ll need to know what you’re doing. Naturally, those running Windows 10 Pro can still delay the update if they’re feeling more cautious than curious about the new features offered up by the October 2018 Update. As mentioned, though, there’s no such luxury for those running the Home version of Windows 10, although apparently the ability to at least delay updates for a short time is in the pipeline for these users. Perhaps now that the automatic deployment floodgates have been fully opened, the October 2018 Update will see adoption pick up speed, because it’s been very sluggish rolling out thus far thanks to the many issues encountered this particular time round. There hasn’t been much in the way of Moto G7 news lately, but now several things have leaked all at once, including images of the range. Shared by MySmartPrice, you can see in the renders below that the Moto G7 and Moto G7 Plus have similar designs, with both sporting a teardrop notch at the top and a bezel below the screen. They also both appear to have a dual-lens camera on the back, and a Motorola logo which may double as a fingerprint scanner. There are also renders showing the Moto G7 Play and Moto G7 Power, which look similar to each other but different to the standard G7 and the Plus. These seemingly lower-end handsets have a larger notch on the front, and likely just a single-lens rear camera. There are two circles in the camera block, but one of them is presumably the flash. They do, however, look to have a rear fingerprint scanner. Moving on from the images, the same source says the Moto G7 and Moto G7 Plus will have a Snapdragon 660 chipset, while the G7 Play will have a lower-end Snapdragon 632. The Moto G7 Power will apparently have an even lower-end Snapdragon 625 chipset, but will benefit from a huge 5,000mAh battery and fast charging. Finally, this source details some of the prices and color choices to expect. Apparently, the Moto G7 Play will sell for €149 (around $170 / £130 / AU$235) and be offered in gold and blue, while the Moto G7 Power will cost €209 (roughly $240 / £185 / AU$330) and come in black and lilac shades. There’s no pricing for the higher-end models, but as for colors the standard Moto G7 will apparently come in black and white options, while the Moto G7 Plus will supposedly be sold in red and blue. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/9xzgd5LNk2dkzRv9xyD3SB.jpg This could be a the Moto G7 Power. Credit: Geekbench / The Android Soul Basic specs and solid scoresAnd that’s not the end of the Moto G7 rumors, as elsewhere The Android Soul has spotted a benchmark seemingly for one of the phones. It’s a Geekbench listing for a phone dubbed the Moto G7, but it lists a Snapdragon 625 chipset, which if the rumors above are accurate would mean this is actually the Moto G7 Power. In any case, other details include 3GB of RAM, Android 9 Pie, a single-core score of 1,260 and a multi-core result of 4,759. That’s a slight boost on the Moto G6 Plus, which got a multi-core score of 4,167 in our tests. Still, given the listed specs we would think this is the Play or the Power, meaning the standard Moto G7 and the Moto G7 Plus may be capable of more. It goes without saying that all of this should be taken with a pinch of salt, but the specs and images are broadly in line with what we’ve seen before. Google has begun rolling out speed limits for Google Maps throughout the US. The company began testing the feature in 2017, but it was restricted just two areas: the California Bay Area and Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. Now, Android Police has received tips from Maps users scattered throughout the US (including Los Angeles, New York City and Minnesota) who have begun seeing speed limits as a small tile on the bottom left of the map. As Android Police notes, the app itself hasn't received an update recently, so the change has happened on Google's servers. Therefore, although all the reports so far have been from Android users, iPhone owners are likely to start seeing speed warnings as well. In the slow laneIt's a surprise it's taken so long for Google to add speed limits to Maps, considering it already has the data, and brought the feature to Waze in 2016. The new addition will make Maps a more realistic competitor to navigation apps and standalone GPS systems from the likes of Garmin and TomTom. If you find you still don't have access to speed notifications next time you buckle up and plan a route, there are alternatives available. Velociraptor is a good choice in the US; it offers a free service that uses data from OpenStreetMap, and a premium tier that pulls its info from TomTom. A report by Business Insider has revealed that Facebook has moved hundreds of employee from its research team, Facebook Reality Labs, to a team that focuses specifically on augmented reality hardware. The findings have led to speculation that Facebook could release its long awaited augmented reality glasses sometime soon – although we aren’t holding our breath for a 2019 release. Or even a release this side of 2025 for that matter. We’ve known that Facebook is working on augmented reality glasses for a while now, since the company’s announcement at the F8 2017 developer conference. Since then, we’ve not heard much more about the AR glasses, save for Mark Zuckerburg telling Recode in April 2017 that “we do not have the science or technology today to build the AR glasses we was want”, but that the technology could feasibly exist in “five years, or seven years”. Don't hold your breathWhile the Business Insider report cites a source who says the glasses could be ready by 2022, a Facebook spokesperson has denied this, saying that the social media company is working on a number of AR products that may never even have official launches. According to a 2017 patent, the AR glasses could use a ‘waveguide display' to combine computer graphics with the real world – essentially an advanced method of giving the illusion of depth on specs right in front of your face. Based on the patent images, the AR glasses could look just like a regular pair of glasses, which means there will be lot of complex, miniaturized technology to get right before they can be released. Whether or not we’ll see the long awaited AR glasses before 2025 is unknown, but it at least looks like Facebook is looking to throw money and resources at its burgeoning AR department. If you get the feeling that everyone you know has a Netflix subscription, there’s a good chance you’re right - Netflix just announced that it has 139 million paying subscribers around the world. That number doesn’t take into consideration all the folks who use Netflix either through a shared account or are on a free trial account - which likely explains why that number isn’t even higher - but that means there are more people paying for Netflix than there are people living in Tokyo, Delhi, Shanghai, Sao Paulo and Mumbai, combined. Netflix’s latest report to shareholders, which is where that data originates, claims the company has gained nearly 9 million of these paying subscribers in the last three months of 2018 - closing out the year with 29 million more paying subscribers than it started with. If analysts’ predictions are right, that would put Netflix on par with the number of Amazon Prime subscribers worldwide (around 100 million at last count), and vastly ahead of the largest streaming music service, Spotify, which is sitting somewhere around 40 million paying subscribers. Will Disney cause Netflix some dismay? In an earnings call that accompanied the report, Netflix’s executive team claimed that the streaming service owns around 10% of the 1 billion hours Americans spend watching TV per day, a number that they say also includes live cable television and video games as well. To that end, it’s not other streaming services like Disney+ or DC Universe that pose a threat to the company - it’s actually Fortnite and YouTube that the company fears the most: “We compete with (and lose to) Fortnite more than HBO,” Netflix said in its earnings report. “When YouTube went down globally for a few minutes in October, our viewing and signups spiked for that time.” So what’s Netflix doing with all this money from the new signups? It’s putting a good chunk of it back into its original programming. In 2019, Netflix will be launching new seasons of The Crown, 13 Reasons Why and the third season of Stranger Things, in addition to other undisclosed projects. Does that mean we're in for more creative ventures like Black Mirror: Bandersnatch? You can bet your monthly subscription fee on it. It would appear that LG didn't get the memo about notches being out this year, if these new leaked renders and 360-degree video from 91Mobiles and @OnLeaks are to be believed. The renders, said to be of the upcoming LG G8, show a handset that looks almost identical to last year's LG G7 ThinQ, though keen observers will notice some very subtle differences between the two phones. Firstly, it looks as though the LG G8 has slightly reduced the size of its chin bezel. Before you rush off to preorder, it's also worth noting that its aforementioned notch now seems to house a dual camera setup, which will either provide depth-of-field selfies or better face unlock functionality. On the rear of the phone, you'll notice the cameras are now horizontally aligned, as opposed to the G7 ThinQ's vertical implementation. Like last year's model, LG will reportedly stick to a dual-lens primary camera setup, bringing the total up to four cameras on the G8. Elsewhere on the device, the 3.5mm headphone jack makes its triumphant return, likely bringing Quad DAC audio along with it, as does the dedicated Google Assistant button, which made its debut on the G7 ThinQ. The LG G8 is expected to be announced at MWC 2019 with an assumed late-February launch date. You can check out the 360-degree render video from 91Mobiles below. Mastercard recently announced it would be putting an end to automatic debits from subscriptions that start up once a free trial has ended, but the company has now clarified that the new policy isn’t quite as useful as we’d hoped. The updated blog post now clearly states that “the rule change is [only] applicable to physical products such as skincare, healthcare items etc.”, which doesn’t have quite the same impact as enforcing the same policy on digital and software subscriptions. From now on, merchants (selling physical product subscriptions) are required “to gain cardholder approval at the conclusion of the trial before they start billing” and also to reiterate the cost and duration of the paid subscription, and explicit instructions on how to cancel. Mastercard targets major blockchain breakthroughSneaky software subscriptionsIt’s common practice among digital services (such as PlayStation Plus) to offer a free trial, typically lasting anywhere from two weeks to three months, in order to give potential customers a taste of the service and, ideally, keep them subscribed into the paying period once the trial is over. With lengthy trials, users wanting to simply test out the service can easily forget to cancel the subscription before the first payment is due. Naturally, the initial announcement that Mastercard would be preventing this from happening was met with a warm reception from consumers, so it’s unfortunate that the policy statement has now been revised to provide a much more limited reach. Hopefully the public response will mean that we will see digital and software subscriptions be included in the payment company's policy in the future. If we needed further proof that Google remains committed to wearables, here it is: the tech giant just paid Fossil Group $40 million (about £31m, AU$55m) for unspecified smartwatch intellectual property (IP) that the company had been developing. As part of the deal, some of Fossil Group’s R&D team that had been supporting the tech IP will join Google, according to a press release. The latter company won’t be making off with everyone, the release noted: Fossil will still have 200 R&D employees on the books. The acquisition is intended to help the wearables space as a whole, TechRadar gathered after reaching out to Google, though the company wouldn't specify further. The tech isn't related to any Fossil smartwatch currently on the market, A Fossil Group spokesperson confirmed to TechRadar. What we do know: Google and Fossil Group will coordinate to develop this new technology in the form of a new kind of product. “What we’re doing here is bringing a new category of product out there that’s not out there yet,” Fossil Group Executive Vice President Greg McKelvey told Tom's Guide. “This product isn’t on the market for us yet and we think it’s going to be an attractive incremental offering.” But the tech could be based on something Fossil had itself acquired several years ago. Misfit lineage? The deal will lead to the launch of "a new product innovation that's not yet hit the market," McKelvey told smartwatch site Wareable in a separate interview. According to McKelvey, this new product line will be based on tech Fossil developed from what it acquired when it bought Misfit in 2015 for a reported $260 million. Misfit is known for its stylish and uniquely-designed fitness trackers and smartwatches, like the Shine 2, a pod-shaped tracker you could pop out of its wristband to attach anywhere on your clothes using an included clip. Fossil Group aims to release multiple devices across its brands that will integrate the new tech, McKelvey added. It seems like Fossil will get first crack at new products before the new tech is opened up to the greater Wear OS product community. The latter point was echoed in comments Stacey Burr VP of Product Management at Wear OS made to Wareable. "We saw some technology that they were developing that we thought could be brought out in a more expansive way if Google had that technology, and was not only able to continue to use it with Fossil but bring it to other partners in the ecosystem," Burr said "It's about bringing great features to the widest numbers of on-the-go consumers." Burr wouldn't elaborate on whether this tech would be used for Google's much-rumored Pixel Watch. The company's smartwatch hardware was thought to be timed with the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL launch event, but never made an appearance in 2018. Considering the new tech is coming to all of Wear OS, though, it conceivably would come to Google's hypothetical wearable. The transaction is expected to close sometime this month, according to the press release. We’ve heard plenty of rumors that Nvidia plans to announce a new GTX 11-series of graphics cards, but this is the first time we’re hearing about GeForce GTX 1660 Ti. Apparently, such an oddly-named card is indeed in the works and it’ll feature a TU116 GPU with 1,536 CUDA cores and 6GB of GDDR6, according to three sources that spoke with Videocardz. This GTX 1660 Ti is also said not include any RTX cores – there’s no word on whether Tensor Cores have been cut as well – as a costcutting measure for users who don’t want to spend the premium on raytraced graphics. Around the launch of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060, there was heated speculation that a Geforce GTX 1160 card would also be announced, so there suddenly being this rumored GTX 1660 seems a bit odd. We’re also taken aback by how few CUDA cores it has compared to the 1,920 count found on the Nvidia RTX 2060, but it would still technically be an upgrade over the Nvidia GTX 1060 and its 1,280 CUDA Cores Although this rumor seems to be standing on shaky ground, it seems certain that Nvidia will have to announce more affordable graphics cards to replace its outgoing 10-series Pascal graphics cards. Whether it takes shape in a RTX-less 11- or 16-series or the hotly anticipated RTX 2050 (Ti) remains to be seen. Meanwhile in processor land, the AMD's first Ryzen 3000 chip look very excitingVia Wccftech http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/DSOLVIG_nDs

One of the most anticipated rumored features coming to the Samsung Galaxy S10 is an in-screen fingerprint scanner. Unfortunately, noted case maker Armadillotek has claimed that its screen cover can block the phone from reading fingerprints. Conceivably, this might also apply to other translucent coverings separating the display from fingerprints, from thin screen shields to thick see-through covers in protective cases. Until we hear back from other sources, it's unclear if this applies to any layer between display and finger or just certain ones of meet a minimum thickness or made from particular materials that interfere with Samsung's rumored ultrasonic technology. It may not be a materials issue: when reached for comment, Armadillotek said it tested tempered glass and PET (polyethylene terephthalate) covers – and both blocked the fingerprint sensor. Consequently, Armadillotek said in its tweet, the company will forgo the screen protector on its signature Vanguard case. Construction conflictsThe issue could lie with how the scanner reads fingers. Unlike fingerprint scanners in other phones that use light to scan skin surface (like in the OnePlus 6T), the one on the Samsung Galaxy S10 will allegedly use ultrasonic waves. This won’t be a problem for every new Samsung phone: the standard Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10 Plus are slated to get an in-display ultrasonic fingerprint scanner, while the one on the S10 Light will allegedly have an older-style fingerprint scanner mounted on the phone’s side. Security researcher Troy Hunt, who runs the service Have I Been Pwned, has discovered almost 773m unique email addresses and around 22m unique passwords hosted on Kim Dot Com's cloud service MEGA. In a blog post, he revealed that the collection contained over 12,000 separate files and more than 87GB of data. The data, which Hunt refers to as Collection #1, is a set of email addresses and passwords totalling 2,692,818,238 rows on a spreadsheet that has allegedly come from numerous sources. Hunt provided more details on his discovery in his blog post, saying: "What I can say is that my own personal data is in there and it's accurate; right email address and a password I used many years ago. In short, if you're in this breach, one or more passwords you've previously used are floating around for others to see." Collection #1Some of the passwords included in the dataset have been dehashed and appear as plain text in the files including Hunt's own password. He first began investigating the data stored on MEGA when multiple people reached out to him and Collection #1 was also discussed on a hacking forum. As of now, the collection has been removed from the cloud service but the passwords and email addresses stored within it are likely still floating around on the internet. Hunt's service Have I Been Pwned is an excellent resource to see if you or your family's passwords have been leaked online. The iPhone 11 may introduce a significantly better front-facing camera, as a new leak indicates that Apple is upping its TrueDepth camera to 10MP. This is sizable jump from the 7MP camera in the iPhone XS and iPhone XR to a 10MP camera, as reported by CompareRaja. It could improve selfie photos, Face ID, and Animoji in the next-generation iPhone. There's also news about the previously leaked iPhone 11 triple-lens camera, with the new report suggesting there will be 14MP and 10MP sensors in two of the three cameras. The third camera sensor resolution remains to be unknown. Given that Apple has traditionally made its telephoto lens the same MP size as the standard lens, the last camera could also feature a 14MP sensor as well. To USB-C or not to USB-C? That is the questionApple will reportedly stick with a Lightning port on the iPhone 11, even though the iPad Pro 11 and iPhone Pro 12.9 switched to USB-C. USB-C has been predicted for the iPhone 11, but CompareRaja said it had "different information" via notable smartphone leaker Steve Hemmerstoffer. This particular iPhone prototype is said to show a traditional Lightning connection. Of course, between now and the expected iPhone 11 launch in eight months Apple could start using USB-C. Also, since the company is expected to have three new iPhones for 2019, we could see more more advanced models, like the iPhone 11 Max, get USB-C. So, why do you need a portable DAC or headphone amp? Ideally, when you press play on your phone or speaker, the sound that comes out is crisp, clear, and sounds just as the artist intended. Sadly, that's not usually the case. There is a ton of work that goes into reproducing sound the way it should be heard – whatever that might mean. From the way the music is recorded to how it's stored, from what headphones or speakers you use to the source's DAC and amplifier, every step in the journey to your ears can affect how the music sounds. That being said, if your music isn't sounding quite as spectacular as it should – and the only thing you've changed recently is the source – it's likely that your new device (a new laptop, desktop, phone or tablet) has a poor quality DAC. A DAC, or Digital-to-Analogue Converter, is the device that takes the bits and bytes stored in a digital music file and converts it into something a headphone or speaker (analogue devices) can play back. The best phones for music: the best handsets for audiophiles out thereThe advantages of using an external DACThe first advantage of using an external DAC rather than the DAC that comes built into your device, is that an external system will usually be better than the one Simply put, external DACs will usually perform much better than those that come built in to your smartphone or equivalent playback device – usually because that aspect of the hardware usually isn't the priority in all-round media devices like phones or tablets. The second reason to shell out for a better system is the fact that some of the more premium headphones on the market are 'high-impedance' headphones, which require more power through the headphone jack on your music source in order to work properly. (Impedance, for the record, is measured in a unit called ohms, and less than 50 ohms is considered to be low-impedance.) The general consensus is that the harder a pair of headphones is to drive, the better they will eventually sound when paired with the right equipment. An external DAC helps with these headphones as it can work as a headphone amp to provide the extra power needed to drive a high-impedance pair of 'phones. Now that you know how the technology works, let's talk about which devices you can get your hands on to amp up your audio. What is the best DAC?http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/ptUH3sfbZuNPeJvnAQYATW.jpg It’s a close race between the xDSD and the Chord Mojo, but one thing's for sure: iFi's distinctive take on the DAC brings plenty of new ideas to the table. The iFi xDSD is certainly eye-catching, with a ribbed metal casing and glossy finish giving a smartly premium look. Out of the box you’ll also get a velvet carry pouch and even some strips of velcro (remember velcro?) to strap the DAC to the back of your smartphone, if you're into that. The optional Bluetooth connection is hugely practical, utilizing an aptX compression format to stream wirelessly without needlessly impacting the audio quality. The Type-A USB is also much friendlier than micro USB for connecting to either Android or Apple devices. (iFi's cheaper sister product, the iFi xCAN, offers much the same specs but as a dedicated headphone amp without the USB port.) You'll get the most benefit when using the fancier audio formats out there. Unlike Mojo, the xDSD supports the hi-res MQA (Master Quality Authenticated) format found on Tidal's Masters tier and the like. It's able to play both DSD and PCM audio in their native formats, rather than converting one to the other – and risking further loss – before it reaches your ears. Using the DAC gives a sense of a careful control, aided by an analog volume wheel and numerous other settings to truly fine-tune your music, with separate settings for optimized mids (Listen) or frequency-agnostic (Measure) output. There are even options to gently boost the bass, or turn on the '3D+ Matrix' for a live performance feel – widening the soundstage for a sense of scale and presence beyond usual stereo. Some will love the level of control and experimentation this affords them, though others may prefer 'one setting' DACs that don't require as much interference. The Chord Mojo (below) is still probably the natural choice for those wanting an industry-standard portable DAC that does the job in as few steps as possible. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/49ee1470376da4e71e6aa045bee8dc6a.jpg The Mojo is one of the larger DACs we've tested as a result of the onboard battery that needs to be charged before you can use it with your iPhone. Having to charge an extra device – even if that charge lasts for 10 hours – before listening to music out and about is hardly ideal, but that's the price you have to pay for the Mojo's more power-hungry innards. Thankfully the Mojo puts that power to good use, delivering a much rounder sound than the stock iPhone jack. Without the Mojo the treble and bass frequencies tend to take over, but introduce the external DAC into the mix and the mids are much more present and full. The device's size means it's a bit cumbersome, and not exactly an inconspicuous accessory. I ended up carrying the Mojo in my front pocket (where I could easily access the device's volume controls), with the USB cable leading to my phone in my back pocket. This probably won't be your ideal setup, and that might mean leaving the Mojo behind when you're going out on the town. Using the device at work, where I'm able to leave both my phone and the DAC on the desk, is a lot more user-friendly. Other features include a second headphone output and a cool lighting feature whereby the volume buttons change colour based on the quality of the music file being received. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/8MpzVeGrPuJsukucS2vdUj.jpg Don't be mistaken by the M-DAC Nano's diminutive stature – this is a powerful, pocketable piece of audio excellence. A portable headphone DAC and amplifier at an affordable price, it'll boost the audio performance of any device that sends sonics via a Bluetooth connection. It's about as simple as this sort of device can get – simply connect the M-DAC Nano to your smartphone or Bluetooth playback device of choice, plug a pair of wired headphones into the Audiolab unit and away you go. From here your headphones have a "wireless" connection to your phone, with a dedicated volume wheel on the M-DAC Nano. An "F" button on the unit enables 32bit / 384kHz upscaling, adding critical clarity and depth to your source. You'll get 8 hours of playback with general use, but a respectable 6 hours with the upsampling mode turned on too, driving headphones spec'd to 3000ohms with 7.5mw of power. Supporting Bluetooth V4.2 (with aptX, aptX Low Latency and AAC codecs accounted for) it's about as good a sound as you're going to squeeze from a mobile. With the headphone jack going the way of the dodo and smartphone amplifiers improving, but not to the standard an audiophile would appreciate, the M-DAC Nano is an affordable upgrade for the on-the-go muso in your life at a mere £149 (around $190). http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/hWErWRmRRSprAWAaKNchek.jpg It's a close call between the Chord Mojo and the RHA Dacamp L1. While the Mojo offers a more compact form factor, the Dacamp caters to iOS users with a dedicated USB input. That being said, the Dacamp is a bit longer than the Chord Mojo and a fair bit heavier if you're the kind of person who doesn't mind hauling their audio gear around with them. While it definitely fights for space in our already overcrowded backpacks, we genuinely love the Dacamp – it makes playback sound smooth even when playing music from some less-than-ideal sources and the adjustment knobs on the side allow you to do simple, subtle tweaks to the sound. The knobs might not offer the most robust of changes (moreso than a software EQ, for example) but we appreciate their existence all the same. It comes in a very close second here, but RHA's Dacamp L1 is one of the better DACs to cross our desks and comes highly recommended. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/d453415a321b789b120d045c019a2c04.jpg Audioquest basically invented the USB DAC with the original Dragonfly back in 2012, but until now the device's power demands limited it to desktop use, thanks to the iPhone's 100mAh limit on power draw through its lightning port. But Dragonfly's latest devices completely change that. By using an all-new USB microcontroller, Audioquest's Dragonfly Red/Black's DACs now consume closer to 25mA, and can now be used happily with any iOS device. This makes the Dragonfly a pretty compelling iPhone DAC. With a total size smaller than most USB sticks the Dragonfly fits easily into a pocket alongside an iPhone. Dragonfly Red is the more premium offering. It contains a better DAC chip, and outputs 2.1 volts of power as opposed to the Black's 1.2 volts. That mean the Red is a better choice for driving high-impedance headphones. With my headphones plugged directly into my iPhone I was comfortable listening to music with the volume set halfway, but with the Red I could listen at just a quarter and with the Black this was strangely reduced to just one volume bar. In effect this means that you have a lot less control over the listenable volumes – turning the Black up just one volume notch meant that music was too loud, and turning it down one muted the iPhone completely. Both versions, however, added a good amount of heft to the bass without sacrificing the clarity of mid frequencies. A playthrough of Daft Punk's Get Lucky didn't shimmer in the same way without the DAC than with it. Whether you'll want to pay extra for the Red version depends entirely on how difficult your headphones are to drive – there's far more of a difference with power-hungry over-ears than budget in-ears. Neither the Dragonfly Red or Black can match the refinedness of the Chord Mojo, but their budget price and much more practical form-factor make for a far better portable listening experience. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/xi4x5R8BbhZUPcnsohNoST.jpg Creative Labs is a name you've heard before. It was the company that started the sound card craze in the late '90s and became king of the audiophile crowd for a short period of time. In the time since, Creative has been hard at work crafting extraordinary triple-driver in-ear headphones and an 11.2.4 soundbar while simultaneously working on a portable DAC for more ... uh, affordable price points. The result of all that hard work is the Creative Sound Blaster E5 - the middle child in a large line-up of DACs that offers wireless connectivity options for those of us that can't be bothered with a cord. While the idea of wireless is a great one, it's not without its limitations - Bluetooth can't transmit music at CD-quality without the help of more advanced codecs like LDAC or aptX HD. Because of that limitation, music over wireless just sounds OK. Sure, Creative can upscale it after it's been received, but it never sounds quite as good as native Hi-Res audio. Still, if wireless convenience is what you're looking for to power those powerful headphones in your closet, the E5 is far from the worst choice you could make. Amazon is launching a new conference dedicated to AI, robotics and automation, with demonstrations, talks and workshops on the future of technology. The conference is a follow-on from the company's MARS (Machine learning, Automation, Robotics and Space) event – an expenses-paid, invite-only affair where industry leaders could share their visions of the future over a glass or two of bubbly. In fact, MARS was so discreet, it was almost completely secret until CEO Jeff Bezos decided to admit a small handful of reporters in 2018. Science fiction to factThe rebranded event, re:MARS, will be open to the public, with speakers from MIT, UC Berkeley, NASA and, of course, Amazon. Sign ups are now open here. “We’re at the beginning of a golden age of AI," said Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos in a statement on the new event's site. "Recent advancements have already led to invention that previously lived in the realm of science fiction – and we’ve only scratched the surface of what’s possible." The new event, which will take place at the ARIA resort and casino in the Nevada desert on 4-7 June 2019, is designed for engineers, developers and business leaders, though Amazon adds in a footnote that astronauts will still get in free.
