http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/TRBC/Software/Chrome%20browser/test%20chrome-470-75.JPGIntroductionhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/TRBC/Software/Chrome%20browser/test%20chrome-420-90.JPG Netscape Navigator may have started many people surfing the web some 21 years ago but nowadays Google Chrome is king of the waves. Celebrating its seventh birthday this month (September 2015), Google's gateway to the web launched back in 2008 and was the first mainstream browser to combine the address bar and search box – and so it came to pass that the 'omnibox' was born. Amen. Its speedy UI has since propelled Chrome to be the world's most popular internet browser, responsible for over half of all desktop, console and tablet page requests according to the number-crunchers at StatCounter GlobalStats. Simple and uncluttered it may be, but if you're happy to invest time scratching beneath its shiny surface then Chrome will reward you with power-user features aplenty. Let's take a look at some of Chrome's best hidden gems. Also check out: Best Browsers 2015: the top five candidates for your PC1. Experimental stuffhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/TRBC/Software/Chrome%20browser/chrome%20tip%201-420-90.JPG Google loves a bit of beta code and Google Chrome is no exception. While the browser itself is no longer in experimental mode some features within it are. To take a peek under the covers pop the following into your address bar: chrome://flags There are too many options to go into here, but some highlights include: FPS Counter, Enable fast tab/window close, Show Autofill predictions, Save page as MHTML, Enable experimental web platform features. Just don't come crying to us if you break your browser. 2. Customise your Tab Screenhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/TRBC/Software/Chrome%20browser/chrome%20tip%202-420-90.JPG Google tries hard to make new tabs useful from the outset but there are some Chrome extensions that can make it work even harder. One of these is Momentum. Upon opening a new tab, instead of the spartan slate of recent sites and Chrome apps you get Momentum, your personal dashboard presenting a Things to Do list, quote of the day, favourite links and, to top it all off, a beautiful landscape. It won't single-handedly change your life, and basic features like cloud-syncing for links and lists can't come soon enough, but if you spend much of your day with your nose in a browser, Momentum might just be the launch-pad you need. 3. Chrome DevToolshttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/TRBC/Software/Chrome%20browser/chrome%20tip%203-420-90.JPG Ever wanted to look under the hood of a web page? Essential for developers and nosy parkers alike, Chrome Developer Tools comprises of a comprehensive suite of debugging and web authoring widgets that let you look over a web page's HTML, CSS and more. It's a quick way of finding the source of an image or video on a page, and thanks to Chrome DevTools letting you make updates to web pages on the fly you can debug rendering problems and even pull some pranks. To open DevTools right click on any page element (an image, video or header, for example) and select 'Inspect Element' from the context menu. Alternatively select Tools > Developer Tools in the Chrome menu or press Ctrl + Shift + I (Cmd + Opt + I on Mac). Users of the Firebug plug-in for Firefox will feel right at home here. And perhaps a little jealous. 4. Run Android apps in Chromehttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/TRBC/Software/Chrome%20browser/chrome%20tip%204-420-90.JPG If the worldwide web and the Chrome Web Store don't give you enough choice of things to do with Chrome, you can now run Android Apps too, thanks to Android Runtime for Chrome (ARC). Granted, there are caveats and ARC is still very much a Developer Preview, but the principle of running smartphone and tablet apps on your desktop is a promising one. To give it a go for yourself, we recommend hopping over to this TechRadar feature where Nick Mediati successfully runs the Twitter for Android app on his desktop. 5. Be a Chrome keyboard shortcut ninjahttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/TRBC/Software/Chrome%20browser/chrome%20tip%205-420-90.JPG Any power user worth his or her salt knows the keyboard is still king. As deadly as a special move on Tekken, knowing the right Chrome key combos can save you a ton of time across your day. Here are a few shortcuts you should definitely know (PC/Mac): Ctrl/Cmd + L – highlights text in the address barCtrl/Cmd + T – open a new tabCtrl/Cmd + W – close current tabCtrl/Cmd + Shift + T – reopen closed tabCtrl + Tab – switch tab one tab to the rightCtrl + Shift + Tab – switch tab one tab to the leftCtrl/Cmd + Shift + B – toggle the bookmark bar visibilityAnd here's where you'll find the whole shooting match. 6. Fix Flash fasthttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/TRBC/Software/Chrome%20browser/chrome%20tip%206-420-90.JPG Flash is alive – but only just. Disrespectful of system resources and sieve-like in its security, Flash does not play well with others; while it does continue to have its uses, it remains a thorn in the side of many. Nevertheless, there are some ways to tame it. The Flashcontrol extension is one of the best, disabling embedded Flash movies and animations by default, allowing you to unblock as required. On Chrome it's also very easy to put Flash in the pan altogether. Type the following into the address bar: chrome://plugins Now click on 'Disable' wherever you see a Flash Player plugin. To confirm you've been de-Flashed visit here, tap Check Now and the box beneath should confirm that Flash Player has been disabled. 7. Mute that tabhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/TRBC/Software/Chrome%20browser/chrome%20tip%207-420-90.JPG Modern day multitasking means managing lots of open tabs, or 'multi-tabbing' as we like to call it. Things can get tricky, however, if a rogue web page spontaneously plays some video or audio, as seen with some of the more virulent online advertising. And with a dozen or more open tabs it can be a pain to find the offender and mute it quickly. Chrome did remedy this somewhat by injecting a speaker icon into the tab title to speed up the process of finding the noisy page. However, Chrome can take this one stage further by letting you mute a noisy tab simply by clicking on the speaker icon. This is a feature that for the time being is hidden away and not turned on by default, though. To enable it, pop the following into the address bar: chrome://flags/#enable-tab-audio-muting Tap on Enable and now when audio plays in a tab you can click the speaker in the tab header to mute. 8. Terminate your tabshttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/TRBC/Software/Chrome%20browser/chrome%20tip%208-420-90.JPG Easy come, easy go. As much as it's superfast – sometimes too fast – to open new tabs with Ctrl/Cmd + T (PC/Mac) or by Ctrl/Cmd + clicking a hyperlink, it can be even quicker to close them. Lots of them, all at once. A right click on a tab reveals tab termination options including 'Close Other Tabs' and 'Close Tabs to the Right'. Many savvy browsers divide and conquer their Chrome: important tabs pinned to the left, temporary tabs stacked to the right. When it's time for a cull a swift 'Close Tabs to the Right' will restore normality. 9. Task Managerhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/TRBC/Software/Chrome%20browser/chrome%20tip%209-420-90.JPG If the fans on your machine start cranking up like something from the Crystal Maze (remember the chaos in the dome that was the finale of the show?) then the chances are a process somewhere is doing some heavy lifting or has gone rogue. On Windows and OS X there are Task Manager and Activity Monitor applets to help identify which process is running hot. But if it's a web page that's gone awry then these views aren't so helpful, showing catch-all process names like 'Google Chrome Helper' instead of specific page names. That's where Google Chrome's own Task Manager app comes in. Click on the Google Chrome menu, go to More Tools then Task Manager and you'll be rewarded with the browser's own process list. This includes open tabs and web pages as well as browser extensions and background pages. For each process you'll see a name, the amount of memory used, the CPU resources it's consuming as well as network activity. To stop a runaway page in its tracks simply select it and hit End Process. 10. Chrome Remote Desktophttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/TRBC/Software/Chrome%20browser/chrome%20tip%2010-420-90.JPG You can remotely access one computer from another with a nifty extension from Google called Chrome Remote Desktop. Giving you access to the entire desktop, not just the web browser, you can use it to open applications and files on your Mac at home from your PC at work, or to save the day in a parental tech support crisis. You'll need to install the Chrome Remote Desktop extension from the Chrome Web Store onto any machine you'll be accessing or using to access, and also set up a security PIN. What's more you can even download an app – Chrome Remote Desktop – for Android and iOS to access machines from your mobile or tablet. Prefer to use a touchpad instead of a mouse with your desktop machine? Well now you can. Install Chrome Remote Desktop on a local smartphone or tablet, set up the screen share and away you go. We found it to be surprisingly useful, with the mobile app even supporting multi-touch gestures just like a trackpad. http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238386566804/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4a3a828e/sc/15/rc/1/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238386566804/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4a3a828e/sc/15/rc/2/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238386566804/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4a3a828e/sc/15/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/238386566804/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4a3a828e/sc/15/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/238386566804/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4a3a828e/sc/15/a2t.imghttp://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/4a3a828e/sc/15/mf.gifhttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/3KIqysD5mb4

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/TRBC/Abstract/Lock%20on%20keyboard%20button/iStock_000002900430Small-bluestocking-470-75.jpgATOS and Airbus Defence and Space have signed a partnership agreement that will provide a boost to enterprises looking to protect themselves from damaging cyber attacks. The strategic partnership between the two global heavyweights gives them a chance to team up when working on the research, development and provision of a range of products, services and solutions to battle cyber attacks. "By combining our forces, we come up with more innovation to continually improve the protection of our customer's infrastructures. It is also a great source of satisfaction to be able to expand our range and give our customers access to a portfolio of solutions that is unique in Europe, including the security expertise of Airbus Defence and Space in the defence sector," explained Philippe Vannier, Executive VP of Big Data and CTO of Atos. One of the ways the two are planning to work together is in the development of security solutions for extended enterprises (group, subsidiaries and supply chain). The main part of the contract is a worldwide distribution channel partner agreement that allows both companies to benefit from each other's wide range of connections and reap the rewards of a cyber security market that will be worth a potential $84 billion (around £55 billion, or AU$119 billion) by 2016. Atos and BullA large chunk of Atos' technology aspirations are realised by its Bull brand that is known for its technology products and services that are distributed in over 50 countries and benefit from 80 years of continual innovation. It is also a big player in the High Performance Computing (HPC) sector. Atos' acquisition of Bull just last year created a behemoth in the cloud computing arena and by teaming up with Airbus the security side of things will give it an even stronger offering to present to enterprises. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/other/AU%20News/jb%20hifi%20now%20books-470-75.jpgJB Hi-Fi's experiment in ebook publishing has officially come to a close, a little under two and a half years after it launched. The retailer has confirmed that from September 30, customers of the JB Hi-Fi Now ebook store will no longer be able to read or download ebooks purchased through the store. The good news is that international ebook powerhouse Kobo has stepped up, and customers will be able to transfer their JB Hi-Fi library to Kobo free of charge. This isn't the first time Kobo has picked up where a smaller player left off, having acquired Sony's ebook store last year. Reading between the linesAffected JB Hi-Fi customers should have received an email from September 15 with a unique code and instructions on how to transfer their library to the Kobo store. JB Hi-Fi does warn that there will be a small number of books not available to transfer, and users will be informed of this during the transfer process. Also unfortunate is that any bookmarks or highlights made in the JB Hi-Fi app won't migrate over to Kobo. Need a new ereader? Here are some of the best ereaders for Australia

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/TRBCNews/W10IoT-470-75.jpgIf your organization is eager to begin using Windows 10 for Internet of Things projects, you’re one step closer today. Microsoft just unveiled a new Starter Kit for the Windows IoT Core and Raspberry Pi 2. The kit, which includes sensors, electronic parts, wires, and cables that are compatible with Windows 10, enables organizations to prototype and build machines that can transmit information back to a database. For example: Microsoft says the starter kit can help organizations create weather stations that produce data based on interactions with the environment, or tools that communicate with an analog photocell sensor to measure light intensity, and even a wheeled robot that can be controlled via joystick and Raspberry Pi. The detailsWorking in conjunction with a company called Adafruit, Microsoft developed the hardware that comes with the starter kit, including an SD card preloaded with Windows 10 Iot Core. Microsoft says developers who purchase the solution can have their own apps written in up to 190 minutes, which includes setting up the Raspberry Pi PC, setting up the connected device and writing the code for the application. If you’re only interested in the Windows IoT Core, you can download it today bty joining Microsoft’s Windows Insider Program. What is Adafruit?Adafruit is an open-source hardware company that operates a 15,000 square foot facility in New York City. The 50-person company was founded in 2005 by Limor Fried, an MIT graduate who was the first female engineer ever featured on the cover of Wired magazine. In 2013, Adafruit generated $22 million in revenue. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/Streaming%20Services/Stan/Gap-Year-470-75.jpgAustralia has an exceptionally strong 4G mobile network compared to the rest of the world, but if you ever try to stream video while on a train during peak hour, you're in a for a world of disappointment. That's why we got kind of excited when Amazon announced it would be offering offline viewing for certain shows. While Netflix is adamant it will never offer offline viewing, it made sense that one of the local rivals – Stan or Presto – might look to implement a similar feature in their mobile apps. At a preview of Stan's upcoming original comedy series No Activity, we got a chance to chat to Stan CEO Mike Sneesby, who told techradar that while he would never rule out offline viewing, at the moment he's not convinced the benefits outweigh the challenges. "We're looking closely at how that's taken up by consumers internationally," Sneesby admitted when asked about offline options in the Stan app. "I think if you surveyed a bunch of people and said, 'would you be interested in offline viewing', 99 per cent of people will say 'yes, if it's just another option then of course, I'll take that,'" he continued. Viva la resiSTANceThe challenge then isn't so much on the consumer side, but in the complexity it adds to the service, both technically and in terms of user experience. "On Stan we've got about 8,000 hours of viewing – You can't download that onto your phone, so there'll be a limited number of shows or programs that you can ever have offline at once based on how much memory is available on your device," Sneesby explained. "That's challenge number one. Challenge number two is not all shows will have the rights available for offline. "So you will get into this situation where you've kind of got this confusing mismatch of 'why is this show available? Why is that not available? I can only download one show but I want everything!'" he added. These challenges may seem insignificant for a tech-savvy consumer, but for the team at Stan, they are real questions that need to be addressed before offline viewing becomes a feature worth implementing. That's not to say we'll never see offline viewing for Stan. For Sneesby, Amazon's approach is a good case study that will help determine the local approach. "I think the jury's out as to whether the complexities in the experience for consumers actually do end up outweighing the benefits of making it available. But, as I said, I'd never say no and we're certainly keeping a very close eye on it," he said. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/software/Adobe/Photoshop%20Elements%2014/News/photoshop-elements-14-hero-470-75.jpgAdobe has changed a lot about the look and feel of Photoshop Elements 14, and it looks strikingly like the new Apple Photos app for the Mac. For starters, the new interface showcases your photos and video together, rather than showing them separately as it was in Photoshop Elements 13. The new version of Elements also does a much better job of grouping photos based on events and the people tagged in them. For example, hovering the cursor over someone's name will find all of the images that they're found within. Additionally, if you want to find out where you took a photo, Elements 14 will present you with a map. Events view, meanwhile, will automatically group photos into a combined calendar view. Aside from the new look, Elements 14 adds a new guided edit mode, which will point out what could be improved in the photo for you, including framing and correcting skin tones. Other enhancements include automatic haze removal and improved automatic camera shake correction. Photoshop novices will also appreciate the newly improved refine selection tool, which makes it especially easy to select a subject with hair. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Adobe/Photoshop%20Elements%2014/News/photoshop-elements-14-filter-420-90.jpg What about Adobe Premiere Elements 14?Adobe also announced a new version of Premiere Elements 14, with a major focus on audio editing. The new video editing software package now includes a new audio view that shows the audio track in .wav format. Filmmakers also get a set of audio tools, including the ability to mix or add narration as well as effects such as low and high pass filters. Motion Tiles (a completely new feature), meanwhile, will allow videographers to add an animated video tile on top of their footage – think picture-in-picture. Black and White video has trickled down from the Photoshop Creative Cloud package to Elements 14, and you'll even be able to add slow and fast motion with the Timezone feature. And lastly, you'll be able to import and export 4K footage. Adobe plans to launch both Photoshop Elements 14 and Premiere Elements 14 before the end of the year for $99 (£64, AU$99) each. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/MacLifeWebContent/iOS9Wallet/Wallet%20hero-470-75.jpgAlongside the fresh new San Francisco font and the News app that replaces Newsstand, the biggest change to the iOS 9 home screen may be the arrival of Wallet, the rebranded name for the former built-in Passbook. However, the update isn't simply cosmetic: There are a few new features and improvements coming along for the ride, although some of them haven't been enabled quite yet. Let's take a quick look at what's new. (And for even more iOS 9 tips, click here.) Welcome DiscoverIf you've been hanging onto a Discover-branded credit card in a physical wallet lamenting the fact that Apple Pay doesn't support this preferred payment method, your long, national nightmare comes to an end with the update to iOS 9. But it gets even better: Not only can you now add Discover credit cards alongside Visa, MasterCard, and American Express, but cardholders will also be eligible to receive a 10 percent Cashback Bonus through the end of 2015 on up to $10,000 worth of in-store purchases. (Discover It Miles, Miles, and Escape cardholders earn an extra 10 miles per dollar on the same amount of purchases.) Discover cards can be added to Wallet on iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s, and iPhone 6s Plus devices as well as Apple Watch, and requires nothing more than a quick verification by text message, email, or phone call. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/iOS9Wallet/Wallet%20credit%20cards-420-90.jpg Store Credit Cards, TooThe iOS 9 Wallet app will also mark the arrival of retailer-specific credit cards to the Apple Pay fold, with Best Buy, BJ's Wholesale Club, JCPenney, and Kohl's already lined up to support the feature. Apple has yet to announce when store charge customers can add such cards, though — we tried while writing this article using our Best Buy card, but it came back ineligible. Once available, adding a supported store-branded credit card is exactly the same as Visa, MasterCard, Amex, or Discover: Tap the plus sign in the upper right corner of the Wallet, then follow the on-screen instructions to snap a picture of your card and verify with the three-digit code on back (four on front for Amex); cards can be added to Apple Watch using the built-in app. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/iOS9Wallet/Wallet%20add%20store%20card-420-90.jpg Easier AccessAlthough Apple Pay has always worked without unlocking your iPhone, accessing the cards stored in Passbook often required drilling down into the app itself or being near a supported retail location that would automatically offer to display a loyalty card via push notification. iOS 9 makes things a bit easier on us all with a new shortcut: Just double-click on the Home button while your iPhone is locked, and up pops the Wallet app with your default payment card ready for action, and all of your other credit cards, store credit cards, and loyalty cards just a tap away. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/iOS9Wallet/Wallet%20double-click%20settings-420-90.jpg Get RewardedAlthough the previous Passbook app was often convenient for adding certain types of rewards cards, it wasn't always clear who actually supported them. iOS 9 promises to expand the available options by receiving and redeeming rewards automatically whenever you use Apple Pay. Already announced is support for Dunkin' Donuts DD Perks, Walgreens Balance Rewards and MyPanera, and Apple's official screenshots also tease My Coke Rewards, Kohl's Yes2You, Wegmans Food Markets, and Starbuck's, which previously offered a Passbook for gift card payments and racking up points. As of this writing, however, this feature of Wallet has yet to be implemented. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/iOS9Wallet/Wallet-Loyalty-MyPanera-420-90.jpg More RetailersThough not a new feature per se, there will be plenty of new retailers ready to accept Apple Pay on your iPhone or Apple Watch this year. Announced during the iOS 9 unveil back in June, Best Buy lit up support for the mobile payment service in its retail stores last week after accepting Apple Pay for in-app payments earlier this year. Other retailers with upcoming support for Apple Pay include B&H Photo, Baskin Robbins, BevMo!, Big Lots!, JCPenney, Jonny Rockets, Kohl's, LEGO, Dunkin' Donuts, El Pollo Loco, Express, Forever 21, Levi's, Peet's Coffee, Trader Joe's, and White Castle. Last but not least, scores of small retailers will soon be able to jump into the Apple Pay action, thanks to Square integration courtesy of new reader hardware. You can bet there will be plenty of additional retailers jumping on board Wallet and Apple Pay in the very near future as well. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/iOS9Wallet/Wallet%20setup-420-90.jpg http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238386397594/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4a249680/sc/28/rc/1/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238386397594/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4a249680/sc/28/rc/2/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238386397594/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4a249680/sc/28/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/238386397594/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4a249680/sc/28/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/238386397594/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4a249680/sc/28/a2t.imghttp://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/4a249680/sc/28/mf.gifhttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/IJF_HUbWcCw

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/MacLifeWebContent/notes_tips/notes_tips-FLAT-470-75.jpgApple's Notes app received a much-needed overhaul with iOS 9. It's still a fairly bare-bones experience compared to beefier alternatives like Evernote, but the lack of abundant options can actually make note-taking faster and easier. Plus, the improved Notes has some cool new features if you know how to use them. First, it's important to know that notes are now sorted into folders such as "All iCloud," "All On My iPhone," or ones that you create and name. If you store notes in an iCloud folder, they'll sync across all your iOS 9 and OS X El Capitan devices. Also, on an iPhone, the new editing options are aligned in a row just above the predicitve-text suggestions that sit above the on-screen keyboard. To make the row of options appear, touch the plus button that appears above the keyboard on the right. (On an iPad, the options are always visible to the left and right of the predictive text.) Now, let's use the the cool new features! Checklistshttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/notes_tips/notes-checklist-420-90.jpg Notes has always been a handy go-to app for shopping lists, and its new checklists feature will help you breeze through aisles faster than before. To create a checklist, position the cursor at the start of a list item and tap the first icon shown in the new row of editing options (a checkmark inside a circle) — a checkmark bullet point is added instantly. Simply tap your new checkmark to select or deselect it. Add a photohttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/notes_tips/notes-photo-420-90.jpg Need a visual reminder to go along with your text? Now you can take a photo from within the Notes app, or select a preexisting image, and attach it to your note. Just pull up the row of new options and tap the camera icon to start the process. Attach maps, links, and more from other appshttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/notes_tips/notes-attachments-420-90.jpg You can attach a map, web link, Pages document, and more to a note, but you've got to pop into the appropriate app to do it. If, for example, you want to attach a link, go to the related page in Safari and touch the Share icon along the bottom to bring up the share sheet. From there, tap the Notes icon, and you'll be prompted to choose which note you'd like to put the link into. Easy-peasy. And if you forget which note you stuck something to, you can quickly find any attachment in the Attachments Browser. To use it, enter a folder and tap the small four-squares icon in the lower-left corner. Sketchhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/notes_tips/notes-sketch-420-90.jpg A picture says a thousand words, so if you don't feel like typing a thousand words, doodle. It's the squiggly-line icon in the row of new options. Notes even smooths out your messy lines for you. Siri can helphttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/notes_tips/notes-siri-420-90.jpg Finally, don't forget that Siri can help you quickly find a specific note, even if you can't remember its title or which folder it's in. Just ask her to "Find my grocery list note," "Find my note about Oreos," "Show me all the notes I wrote this week," etc. She'll helpfully pull up all the files that fit your description. http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238386250646/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4a1d5166/sc/28/rc/1/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238386250646/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4a1d5166/sc/28/rc/2/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238386250646/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4a1d5166/sc/28/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/238386250646/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4a1d5166/sc/28/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/238386250646/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4a1d5166/sc/28/a2t.imghttp://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/4a1d5166/sc/28/mf.gifhttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/1TUc3_heIaQ

Opinion: Quick, Quickflix: It's time to give yourself the flick
sincity posted a topic in Technology
http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/Streaming%20Services/Quickflix/Quickflix%20falling-470-75.jpgFor the past six months, Australia has been bathing in a luxurious jacuzzi of video on demand services. Perfectly warm Netflix water, refreshingly soothing Stan bubbles and a cold glass of Presto sparkling to set the atmosphere. But hidden in the water, just below the surface, is the decomposing remains of Australia's first legitimate streaming service: Quickflix. While the stench is yet to really hit our nostrils, it's still well past time for the pioneering service to drag its corpse out of the hot tub before it ruins the experience for everyone. Hot Tub Time MachineIt wasn't always this way though. Back in 2011, Quickflix was our biggest hope for a local version of Netflix. From the name to the DVD mail rental approach, Quickflix promised a local version of the impressive streaming service Netflix was delivering in the US. For $15 a month, you could get unlimited movie streaming on the service. Naturally at launch, the selection of movies wasn't huge (or great), but the fledgling company promised massive growth. And the promise improved a few months later when HBO – the US network behind stellar hits like The Sopranos and Curb your Enthusiasm – invested $10 million in Quickflix shortly after signing a distribution deal. But despite having apps on a wide range of platforms, plus some of the most impressive shows available for streaming, Quickflix never really took off. There are probably many reasons for this, but for me it comes down to three key problems with the platform. Firstly, streaming quality was average, especially on larger TVs. When a program was available in HD, it wasn't immediately obvious, and it could only be accessed on certain platforms. The second big challenge was the user interface, which dated quickly and never quite reached the refined ease of use that saw people flock to Netflix for. But finally, the most important thing holding back Quickflix was its content selection. When the streaming platform first launched, the goal was 1,000 movies. When I reviewed the platform for techradar back in February, there were only 485 movies and 413 TV series, many of which would be considered average quality, while even the decent stuff was old. The thin red lineWhen HBO bought a chunk of Quickflix stock, things looked promising for the fledgling streaming service. But less than two years later, the US giant sold its stock to Channel 9, which admitted the buy was "opportunistic". The fact is that since 2012, the company has been bleeding money. The 2012/13 financial year saw a loss of $6.4 million which jumped to a $10.1 million loss in 2013/14. In the first half of 2014/15, the company continued to slide, posting a loss of $8.6 million in the first six months – before Stan or Netflix even entered the Australian market. The numbers are only half of this tale of woe. Also littering the Quickflix Google News search results for the past couple of years are story after story of false starts and failed initiatives. Following HBO's share sale, the company's plea to subscribers to buy shares was a somewhat obvious act of desperation. After a plan to raise $5.7 million in cash from investors only managed to raise $650,000, or 11 percent of its target, Quickflix's situation seemed somewhat dire. But things got worse. After a trading halt to announce a reseller agreement with Presto, turning Quickflix into a platform for a newer, better streaming offering, things looked up for the company. However, that promising step forward lasted less than three months, when Quickflix went into another trading halt to announce the deal had fallen through. To mitigate the disappointment, Quickflix announced a distribution deal with an unnamed Chinese firm, a strategy that lasted a few weeks before being canned. Now, Quickflix is in a holding pattern, trying to restructure its business and renegotiate contracts to work out a way to make money. Well, that and try and persuade people not to update to iOS 9 because they weren't able to update their iOS app in time, that is. Ultimately, Quickflix is doomed. Money for nothingThe saddest thing about the closure of Ezyflix.TV last month was the fact that nobody cared. While Ezyflix was a rental service like iTunes more than a streamer like Netflix, its closure went largely unremarked in the Australian technology scene. (It's worth noting that Quickflix here is trying to play both the streaming and the premium rental/purchase game). Here was a service that actually pioneered UltraViolet in Australia. Admittedly, UltraViolet is littered with issues, but EzyFlix tried to push the envelope, launching a disc to digital service, and challenging streamers like Stan by offering the first season of Better Call Saul to own for $10. But in the end, the realities of the market proved too much and the platform just ended. No build up, no formal press announcement, no hand-wringing from a stressed out CEO… just a service that no longer existed. It's unlikely Quickflix could pursue the same end, given its listing on the stock exchange and still-marginally-successful DVD rental business. But the fact remains that the company has no hope of succeeding in the streaming market, and should stop trying. The overwhelming consensus within the industry is that the Australian market support more than a couple of streaming services. A combination of our small population size, our average internet speeds and the challenge of content exclusivity will ultimately result in our current glut of services being whittled down, one by one. With that in mind, Quickflix should be the first to go. But rather than reach a point where the company doesn't have a choice, it should end its attempts at streaming with its head held high. Admittedly, Channel Nine's shares in the company could make that troublesome - the whole "opportunistic" part of the HBO share buyout came from the clauses which guaranteed the TV network a $10.5 million payout in case of a "liquidation event" for Quickflix. That includes everything from takeovers to mergers and a disposal of assets. The question now is whether that payout is going to hold back the inevitable bleeding of money Quickflix has already experienced? When the company announces its final numbers for the 2014/15 financial year, is it going to come anywhere near a profit? Hell, will it come close to being less than a $10.5 million annual loss? I'm guessing no. So quick, Quickflix. It's time to drag yourself out of the jacuzzi and let us enjoy the services that are not just giving us what we want, but improving with every passing month. It's time to give yourself the flick. -
http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/internet/Facebook/360%20video/facebook-360-in-hand-470-75.jpgFacebook has announced that 360-degree videos will begin rolling out in News Feeds starting today. Rumors that Facebook would be launching the new video feature popped up last week, though it was suggested then that the feature would be launched through a standalone app. Instead, the social media giant today launched the feature as part of its video offering, which means the 360-degree videos will available right on your New Feed. As part of the announcement, a number of companies have launched 360-degree videos, including a 360 experience from Star Wars: The Force Awakens that was made exclusively for Facebook, which you can view here. The video, for anyone interested, has you speed across the Jakku desert from the upcoming movie. Other 360-degree videos that are available to watch right now on Facebook include Saturday Night Live, VICE and GoPro, amongst others. Catching upBy adding 360-degree videos, Facebook is playing a bit of catch up with Google, as 360-degree videos have been available on YouTube since earlier this year. "In the future, imagine watching 360 videos of a friend's vacation to a small village in France or a festival in Brazil - you'll be able to look around and experience it as if you were there," Facebook said, so we imagine the feature won't be available to just professional content makers. You'll be able to see the new immersive videos on Facebook through the web or on Android devices, with the feature to be rolled out to iOS in "the coming months." Facebook says that on the web, you can drag your cursor within the video screen to view the different video angles, while on mobile, you can move around the video by dragging your finger in the direction you want. And like with other 360-degree videos available on phones, Facebook says you can also "hold up your phone, and the 360 video will follow you as you turn, looking around, to experience things from all over the world like never before." http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/software/NEW%20APP%20ON%20THE-470-75.jpgIs there anything in this world as frustrating as copious emails with no easy way to unsubscribe? Well, yes, there are plenty, but that hasn't stopped Google from updating its Gmail app for Android to bring easy Block and Unsubscribe functionality to the app. This isn't the first attempt at offering easy unsubscribe functionality from Gmail, but given the rise and rise of smartphones, this version is much more useful. The app update also allows users to block "disruptive" people – so long as they stick with the same email address. Have yourself a Block PartyTo block or unsubscribe yourself from unwanted emails, you simply have to press the three dots menu button next to the email in question while using the latest version of the Gmail app on Android. From there, you will be given the option to Block or Unsubscribe, alongside traditional options of Moving and Marking as Important By making these changes, Gmail will automatically start pushing content to the Spam folder. If you change your mind down the track, you can undo the changes later. http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238386277358/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4a158f78/sc/15/rc/1/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238386277358/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4a158f78/sc/15/rc/2/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238386277358/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4a158f78/sc/15/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/238386277358/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4a158f78/sc/15/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/238386277358/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4a158f78/sc/15/a2t.imghttp://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/4a158f78/sc/15/mf.gifhttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/zr9Z2xERvTE

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/software/Microsoft/Office%202016/Office%20Hero-470-75.JPG Features #1-5Office 2016 isn't just about new Microsoft Word and PowerPoint layouts. The new productivity suite has a ton of amazing new tricks and features that are designed to make your work (and play) a lot easier. If you still think of Office as something you tinkered with to write terms papers back on Windows 95, well you're in for a treat. Download the new Office 2016 and you'll get access to tools that automatically separate important and unimportant emails, connect to your social media accounts to help you plan your weekend, and help you plan group trips and activities. For the business user, there are a ton of new Office features that help you better communicate, collaborate and create. I'll walk you through some of these new features and how you can use them to improve your Office 2016 experience. 1. ClutterOur SPAM folders are amazing. They collect emails from retailers and businesses with whom we don't want to have any contact whatsoever. But what about that uncle you just can't stand? Or that annoying coworker who constantly asks you to go to lunch? With Clutter for Outlook, your email usage signals whether or not emails should actually enter your inbox. For example: if you never, ever open your uncle's emails, Clutter will automatically send those incoming messages to a folder where they will land alongside your annoying coworker's lunch requests. You can access this folder anytime and move messages back to the normal old inbox. If you're worried you'll miss something important, don't fret. Clutter sends you a weekly digest that tells you exactly what was hidden. You can then command Clutter to never pull in that type of content again. 2. Skype integrationhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/other/Skype-for-web-beta-guy-420-90.jpg Microsoft has made cloud document collaboration possible (years and years after Google, but I digress). Now, you and a friend can edit a Microsoft Word document simultaneously without having to save and share the document via email. Unfortunately, not all of our friends are tech-savvy (or task-oriented), and sometimes you just need to hop onto a call with them to explain things (or gossip). With Office 2016 you can jump onto a Skype call from within Microsoft Word and Outlook. This means you'll never have to launch a second application to begin your video call. You can simply press a button, select a chat partner and start chatting, er, collaborating. 3. Smart LookupYou know how you can look up words in Microsoft Office to find out whether you're spelling them correctly? Now you can use a feature called Smart Lookup in Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook to find information on almost anything on the web. You simply highlight a word or phrase, right-click and select Smart Lookup. A sidebar will open with search results that fit your criteria. Want to learn more about Alaskan Klee Kais? Just type in the phrase, highlight it, right click on Smart Lookup and boom, you'll get tons of information about these cuddly little puppies. Yes, Apple has a similar feature in El Capitan. No, this isn't revolutionary. But, boy is this a useful tool, especially for people who create tons of content and don't have time to open and close separate apps for every query. 4. WunderlistThis new/old app allows you to create interactive to-do lists that can be shared with family, friends and co-workers. Want to assign people tasks? Want to monitor everyone's progress? Wunderlist can help you get everything organized and tracked. Is there a slacker among your group of friends that always forgets to do his/her tasks? Wunderlist sends reminders, allows you to comment on other people's tasks and set due dates, just in case you need to micromanage your pals. Technically, Wunderlist was created in 2009, but Microsoft acquired the company in June and added it to Office 2016. So those of you who solely rely on Office apps to ensure productivity will be pleased to see this new tool added to your suite. 5. PlannerA similar, though unique, feature exists for enterprise Office users. Planner allows managers to create a dashboard for group tasks. Managers can assign projects, track progress and rearrange responsibilities directly from the dashboard. Instead of your boss sending a group email telling everyone what their new assignments are, your boss can simply drag and drop a responsibility from your column to your colleague's. The best part: you don't have to keep your eyes on the dashboard all day. Whenever someone makes a strategic change, group members receive a notification. Features #6-96. Sunrise CalendarWant a calendar app that provides a bit more kick than your standard Outlook application? Microsoft has finally added its side project, Sunrise Calendar, to the Office suite. With Sunrise, you can connect your calendar to applications like Facebook, Foursquare and TripIt to help you make plans. Every time one of your friends or colleagues enters an event into social media, Sunrise adds it to your calendar. So if you want to stay up to date on this week's concerts and films, just check Sunrise to see if anyone added an event to Facebook or Foursquare. Sunrise was originally developed as an iPhone app in 2013. But Microsoft acquired the company in February and added the tool to the Office 2016 suite. 7. Tell MeSimple Office tasks can sometimes be tedious. Hate bolding text? Hate formatting documents? With Tell Me you can simply enter a text command and Office will immediately locate and make the fix for you. Want to change your font to Times New Roman? Enter "change font to Times New Roman" and click on the corresponding command in the Tell Me search bar. It's been rumored that voice commands will be recognized by Tell Me, but it's immediately unclear if this feature will be available when Office 2016 goes live. 8. Office LensSimilar to Adobe Cloud Connect, Office Lens lets you take a camera phone image of a document and then turn that image into an editable Office document. Let's say you want to file a hotel receipt with your Accounts Payable department, but you don't want them to see that nightcap you accidentally charged to your room. You can take a photo of your receipt, run it through Office Lens, redact the line item you'd like to avoid showing and send the document to your company for processing. You no longer need to scan items, save them to your PC and then make edits. You can just snap, edit and send. 9. DelveMost companies create so much data that it's impossible to keep track of it all. Want to find a brilliant presentation one of your colleagues created at some point two years ago? Rather than search through thousands of emails in your inbox, you can access your company's Delve repository. Available for enterprise Office clients, Delve is a hub for all Office documents and creations. Think of it as Pinterest for work. You can organize each item based on subject matter, content type and date. You can search the hub to find relevant content that applies to the work you're doing. You can start a board to encourage your coworkers to share content that you might find useful. http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238386110269/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4a0fa323/sc/28/rc/1/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238386110269/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4a0fa323/sc/28/rc/2/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238386110269/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4a0fa323/sc/28/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/238386110269/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4a0fa323/sc/28/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/238386110269/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4a0fa323/sc/28/a2t.imghttp://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/4a0fa323/sc/28/mf.gifhttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/VLEePwTZzwc

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/MacLifeWebContent/HowToUseiOS9Maps/iphone_maps-FLAT-470-75.jpgAt last, public transit routes have been added to Apple's Maps app. Maps has come a long way since its introduction a few years ago, but with the app's iOS 9 upgrade, the missing piece of the puzzle - public transit options - has finally fallen into place. We'll take a look at the upgraded Maps app and show you how to get the most from its new features. First, the bad news: Maps only features public transit routes for a handful of select locales. If you're in New York City, San Francisco, Baltimore, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Mexico City, Toronto, London, Berlin, or China, then you're in luck. If not, you'll have to wait a bit longer to put the public transic features to use. If you are in one of those lucky locations, however, getting public transit info is pretty easy. Simply enter your destination (and starting point if necessary) as usual, then tap the small arrow to get directions. You'll immediately see options for drive, walk, or transit - obviously, transit is the one you want to select in this case. You'll see the recommended route toward the bottom of your screen (tap it to see the steps involved), but if you're not happy with it or just want to see more options, hit the More Routes button to see what else is out there. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/HowToUseiOS9Maps/MassTransit-420-90.jpg After tapping More Routes, you can select another public transit option that's more to your liking. You'll also find the Options button on this screen - tap it and you'll be able to make refinements based on your departure or arrival time, and also decide which means of transportation are included in public transit directions. If you want to avoid the subway, for example, you can tap that option to remove it from your route suggestions. Once you're finished refining the details hit the Done button, then when you've returned to the map, tap Start to receive complete step-by-step directions. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/HowToUseiOS9Maps/TransitOptions-420-90.jpg Public Transit isn't the only new feature in the iOS 9 version of Maps. There's also an addition called Nearby, which shows you places and services in the vicinity. Simply type an address into the search field in the Maps app, then tap the search field to be taken the the Nearby page, which lets you select from categories such as food, drinks and shopping, all broken down into further subcategories. Click on one to see what's in the area, and how it's been reviewed on Yelp. And if the search field is empty, you'll be shown places that are near your current location. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/HowToUseiOS9Maps/Nearby-420-90.jpg http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238386203355/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4a0c388f/sc/28/rc/1/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238386203355/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4a0c388f/sc/28/rc/2/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238386203355/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4a0c388f/sc/28/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/238386203355/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4a0c388f/sc/28/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/238386203355/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4a0c388f/sc/28/a2t.imghttp://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/4a0c388f/sc/28/mf.gifhttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/2Ziqm5mD-BY

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/mobile_phones/iPhone/iOS%209/review/ios-9-review-iphone-update-470-75.jpgIf you haven’t updated your iPhone or iPad to iOS 9 you’ll soon be in the minority. Half of Apple mobile device users have already updated their operating system, only five days after it was made available to the general public. The new software has been adopted quicker than any other Apple mobile operating system and will likely be downloaded more times than its predecessors, said Philip Schiller, Apple’s SVP of Worldwide Marketing, in a statement. What’s new? With iOS 9 comes new applications and features, including a more intelligent and helpful Siri, a redesigned Notes app, a new News app and multitasking capabilities on the iPad. We thoroughly enjoyed testing out the new operating system, and found it to be pretty terrfici. However, we were a bit perturbed by the inability to divide your screen between two apps on the iPhone, a capability recently introduced to the iPad. We still don’t think Apple has solved its Maps riddle, Siri is still programmed to open only default apps and iPhones and iPads are still jam-packed with bloatware that can’t be deleted. Although these issues are annoying (and lingering), they don’t ruin what is an enjoyable system to use. Judging by the quick rate of iOS 9 adoption, you all seem to agree too. Read our iOS 9 review http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238386111398/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4a09bb36/sc/28/rc/1/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238386111398/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4a09bb36/sc/28/rc/2/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238386111398/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4a09bb36/sc/28/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/238386111398/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4a09bb36/sc/28/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/238386111398/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4a09bb36/sc/28/a2t.imghttp://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/4a09bb36/sc/28/mf.gifhttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/XcSNCrYuXjA

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/software/Windows/Windows%2010%20Bookzine/10%20Ways%20to%20Optimise%20W10/hero-470-75.jpgIntroductionhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Windows/Windows%2010%20Bookzine/10%20Ways%20to%20Optimise%20W10/hero-420-90.jpg When it comes to aiding productivity Windows 10 has plenty to offer. Whether it's aero snapping your apps to corners or asking Cortana to help you out by setting reminders, it's all there to streamline your daily computing. The best approach is to dive right into as many of the settings as you can – personalising your operating system, desktop and programs for the tasks you perform the most. For instance, if Cortana isn't your thing, or you prefer not to search on the desktop through Bing then you can remove that part from the taskbar at the bottom of the page. Doing this will give you more screen space, as well as a tidier desktop and leave you with more space to pin programs to. But, these are just a few ways to improve your Windows experience, read on to learn more. 1. Set up your screen resolutionhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Windows/Windows%2010%20Bookzine/10%20Ways%20to%20Optimise%20W10/Slide-One-420-90.jpg To help increase your productivity make sure your screen is running at maximum resolution. You'll find text and images are much clearer and easier to see. Right click an empty area of your desktop and select 'Display Settings'. You can now select 'Advanced Display Settings' in the right-hand window. Here you'll find the Resolution drop-down menu – select the highest option. 2. Switch to Tablet mode for 2-in-1 laptopshttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Windows/Windows%2010%20Bookzine/10%20Ways%20to%20Optimise%20W10/Slide-Two-420-90.jpg Open the Start menu and select 'Settings'. Here you'll find some tools you can configure to make your life easier. Enabling 'Tablet Mode' will make Windows 10 act more like Windows 8 – your apps will be fully sized and your Start Menu will expand to the entire screen. Ideal for 2-in-1 laptops and touchscreen all-in-ones. 3. Aero Snap in Windows 10http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Windows/Windows%2010%20Bookzine/10%20Ways%20to%20Optimise%20W10/Slide-Three-420-90.jpg Snapping programs to the sides of the screen was a feature introduced in Windows 7. In Windows 10 you can now snap applications to each corner, as well as to the sides, by left clicking and dragging the top bar into a corner. You will also see a visual representation of how much screen space the app will take up. This makes it much easier to multitask with two documents. 4. Uninstall programshttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Windows/Windows%2010%20Bookzine/10%20Ways%20to%20Optimise%20W10/Slide-Four-420-90.jpg Uninstalling old and unused programs can be useful for freeing up storage space on your PC. You'll also notice your start-up times become speedier if you declutter. To do this, click 'Settings' in the Start Menu, select 'System' then on the left tab select 'Installed Apps'. Here you can remove apps by left-clicking them and selecting 'Uninstall'. 5. Create a secure backuphttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Windows/Windows%2010%20Bookzine/10%20Ways%20to%20Optimise%20W10/Slide-Five-420-90.jpg You'll need around 120GB of excess storage in a separate partition or drive to create a secure backup of your PC's OS and documents every week. Go to 'Settings' and select 'Update & Security', then click on 'Back-up' in the left-hand window. Click on the '+' button and select the partition or drive you wish to use. Once done select 'more options', then 'See advanced settings'. 6. Finish the backuphttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Windows/Windows%2010%20Bookzine/10%20Ways%20to%20Optimise%20W10/Slide-Six-420-90.jpg Now click 'System Image Backup' in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen, and click 'Set up Back-up' on the right-hand side of the screen. Highlight the drive you want to use for your backup and click 'Next', then 'Let Windows Chose'. Hit 'Next' again. You can now set up the schedule for when Windows performs the backup and then press 'Save settings and run backup'. 7. Cortana on callhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Windows/Windows%2010%20Bookzine/10%20Ways%20to%20Optimise%20W10/Slide-Seven-420-90.jpg If you are signed into your Microsoft account you can use Cortana for many things from searching the internet, to setting calendar reminders or sending emails. To get going, just say "Hey Cortana" (making sure your mic is enabled) or type Cortana into the search bar at the bottom left-hand of your screen. If she can't do something for you she'll search the internet for the answer. 8. Organise mail accounts into onehttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Windows/Windows%2010%20Bookzine/10%20Ways%20to%20Optimise%20W10/Slide-Eight-420-90.jpg Keeping all email accounts in one place was a handy feature introduced in older versions of Windows 8. However, the Mail app that replaced Outlook has much more increased functionality. Click on the Mail icon in your Start window select 'Add account', select your email service and fill in the details. You can now select 'Done' and all your emails will be in one place. 9. Multi-App viewhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Windows/Windows%2010%20Bookzine/10%20Ways%20to%20Optimise%20W10/Slide-Nine-420-90.jpg Another neat feature is the ability to swap between many apps at any time. Just press 'Task view', the button to the right of the search bar near the Start menu. This allows you to quickly switch between open applications (including minimised ones) without having to trawl through the icons on your task bar, making it much easier to find programs. 10. Uninstalling the old Windowshttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Windows/Windows%2010%20Bookzine/10%20Ways%20to%20Optimise%20W10/Slide-Ten-420-90.jpg So, it's time to bid farewell to Windows 7 or 8 on your PC! To uninstall it, click on the Start menu and type in disk clean up, then open the 'Disk Clean Up' application. You can now select drive (C:), press 'OK' and let Windows scan the drive. Scroll down the open window and tick 'Previous Windows Installation(s)' tab, select 'Clean up system files' and you're done. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/events/wwdc/2013/color%20banner%20logo-470-75.jpgApple claims a large-scale attack has forced it to undertake a clear-out of its iOS App Store. According to cyber security firms alerting Apple to the issue, hundreds of iPhone and iPad apps were embedded with malicious software dubbed XcodeGhost, forcing their removal. The attack is the first reported case of malicious software getting past Apple's stringent app review process in such large numbers. Rotten app-leThe malicious code made it into the App Store after hackers convinced unwary developers to use a counterfeit version of Xcode, Apple's software for developing iOS and Mac apps. Palo Alto Networks director of threat intelligence Ryan Olson insists the knock-off Xcode software was obtained from a server in China, which may have been used due to faster downloads than the ones offered by Apple's US servers. Unsurprisingly, Apple refused to say how many infected apps it had discovered, but Chinese security firm Qihoo360 Technology announced via a blogpost that it had counted 344. Despite this attack, we're sure iOS 9 will prove very popular. http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238386154494/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4a051022/sc/28/rc/1/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238386154494/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4a051022/sc/28/rc/2/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238386154494/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4a051022/sc/28/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/238386154494/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4a051022/sc/28/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/238386154494/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4a051022/sc/28/a2t.imghttp://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/4a051022/sc/28/mf.gifhttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/V6vBaFPnO1g

Should you upgrade to Windows 10?
sincity posted a topic in OS Customization, Discussion and Support
http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/software/Windows/Windows%2010%20upgrade/should%20you%20upgrade-470-75.jpgIntroductionhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Windows/Windows%2010%20upgrade/upgrade%20check-420-90.jpg If you're using Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, you'll be seeing that little Windows icon in the taskbar reminding you that you can reserve Windows 10. You might be reading about long-awaited new features – like being able to sync folders on OneDrive that other people have shared with you – that are only available on Windows 10. But if you haven't already upgraded, chances are that you still have some questions about whether you should upgrade. And with that in mind, we are going to provide some answers, so read on… Also check out: Windows 10 will be the last time you ever upgradeWhat you get with Windows 10http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/events/Microsoft%20Build%202015/press%20photos/Microsoft%20Edge%20Build%20press%20photo-420-100.jpg For many people, Windows 10 is a great release, that goes beyond just bringing back the Start menu or including a lot of security improvements that businesses will welcome. For starters, it will improve performance on many systems. Windows itself takes up a little less disk space but what you'll notice if you're coming from Windows 7 is much faster boot times and longer battery life (the gains over Windows 8.1 are less impressive). It also has a new way of handling memory – when programs are asking for more memory than the system has available, rather than copying what other programs have in memory to disk so it can shift that memory to the new application (which will make it slower to switch back to them later), the kernel compresses the contents of memory to make room without slowing things down. Gaming performance is similar to Windows 7 (and Windows 8.1), but DirectX 12 support means new games will get better performance on existing hardware. Plus you can stream games from your Xbox to your PC to play them and capture snapshots of gameplay in any game to share with friends. If you avoided Windows 8 because of the Start screen, or you just didn't get around to upgrading, Windows 10 is your chance to benefit from a host of improvements. These include more tools in File Explorer and Task Manager, the simple refresh and reset tools that make it easier to fix your PC, having settings automatically sync to other PCs that you use with the same Microsoft account, and the new picture password that makes having a password on your account far less tedious. If you have a new notebook with the Intel RealSense camera built in, Windows 10 makes things even easier by recognising your face. Other big new features in Windows 10 include Passport, which Microsoft hopes will replace passwords by using that secure logon to give websites and services your credentials – that won't work for a while, because the FIDO Alliance standard it's compatible with isn't quite finished. Then there's Cortana, the voice assistant from Windows Phone that also powers search in Windows 10, finding programs and files on your PC, suggesting matching apps from the Store and looking up information from the web, all in one place. Cortana is both fun and useful now, and could get a lot more useful as more apps and services integrate with it. Windows 10 includes free Office apps, although they're more like the Office apps on a phone or tablet than the full version of Office. There's also the new Edge browser – if you want to use sites that don't work in IE, without having to switch to Chrome (which is ever more of a resource hog) or Firefox, Edge is an interesting option, and it's only available in Windows 10. But with no extension support and no ad blocking, Edge is still a work in progress. To a certain extent, that's true of Windows 10 itself. What you have to get used to with Windows 10http://cdn4.mos.techradar.futurecdn.net//art/software/Windows/Make%20windows%20better/two%20updates-420-100.jpg Windows 10 is a free upgrade for the first year to entice you to move up to a new version of Windows that Microsoft can keep improving and updating; that's what Microsoft calls Windows as a Service. Especially if you decide to be a Windows Insider, that means frequent updates and frequent restarts – and limited information about what's getting fixed or updated each time. You can tell Windows to warn you about restarts and let you pick the time for them, but it's far harder to just hibernate your PC and keep using it for weeks at a time. The updates are nearly always a good thing; security fixes are important and a lot of attacks use vulnerabilities that have already been fixed – but people haven't installed the patches. However, with Windows 10 Home, you can't avoid getting essential updates – and that might displease some who would prefer to have a choice. If you want to have a PC that doesn't change, you'll need to have a business version of Windows 10 and policies that stop updates. As with any new version of software, there are still issues with Windows 10, including problems with apps like Mail, and sometimes stability issues on different systems. Not everyone will experience problems (a clean install or a system reset will often make Windows 10 more reliable if you do), and Microsoft is working on the various glitches, but it's a good idea to check what users with similar hardware are experiencing before you upgrade. You'll also need to get used to having a Microsoft account. It is still possible to create a local account and use that, but you'll miss out on lots of features in Windows 10 – from the Store to OneDrive file sync to Xbox gaming. If you're going to ignore all of that, you'll need a good reason to upgrade to Windows 10 at all. What you lose with Windows 10http://cdn4.mos.techradar.futurecdn.net//art/software/Windows/Make%20windows%20better/onedrive-420-100.jpg If you don't want to give up Windows Media Center, don't plan to download a crack; skip Windows 10 (or upgrade and find an alternative for the features in Media Center, because otherwise you'll be stuck on an old version of Windows for a very long time). Also, if you need XP Mode to keep an elderly Windows XP program working, don't upgrade to Windows 10 – or upgrade to the Pro version, and run an older version of Windows virtually using Hyper-V, but remember that you're more likely to have security problems because of that. It's unlikely that you'll be so attached to Spider Solitaire that you skip Windows 10 to keep it, especially as there are free versions of all the key Windows games in the Store. But the changes to OneDrive are more significant. If you don't sync all the folders from OneDrive to your PC, you won't be able to work with them in File Explorer any more. If that's key to the way you work, skip the Windows 10 upgrade until Microsoft comes up with the promised features to replace offline placeholders. Is Windows 10 for me?http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Windows/Windows%2010%20upgrade/should%20you%20upgrade-420-90.jpg Any new version of Windows has advantages and disadvantages and Windows 10 is no different – except that the free upgrade for the first year makes it more tempting to go for it without necessarily thinking things through. Check how well Windows 10 will work on your PC, look at the new features and decide how useful they are to you, and look at the changes and the features that you'll lose in order to decide if any of those will cause you problems. And while there aren't any major flaws in Windows 10, if you're worried about the niggles, remember that you don't need to rush – the free upgrade will be available for a year after Windows 10's launch and Microsoft keeps adding improvements and fixes. If you're on the fence, you can always upgrade and try Windows 10 for yourself and roll back to your previous version of Windows if you subsequently decide it's not for you (just ensure you make a good backup first). http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238386057460/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/49fd1771/sc/15/rc/1/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238386057460/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/49fd1771/sc/15/rc/2/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238386057460/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/49fd1771/sc/15/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/238386057460/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/49fd1771/sc/15/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/238386057460/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/49fd1771/sc/15/a2t.imghttp://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/49fd1771/sc/15/mf.gifhttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/Ij3EBZm_Rb8 -
http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/software/Windows/Windows%2010%20Bookzine/Customise%20The%20Start%20Menu/Hero-470-75.jpgIntroductionhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Windows/Windows%2010%20Bookzine/Customise%20The%20Start%20Menu/Hero-420-90.jpg With Windows 10 finally here, you might be wondering what exciting changes will be in store for you and your PC. Also, will the new system be easy to get used to? The short answer is, we can absolutely guarantee you will be up and running with your new operating system in next to no time. Of course, there's plenty that's different, but Windows 10 is designed to make your computing life easier and even more streamlined than ever before. In this tutorial, we start the journey by looking at the Start menu, and see what has changed with the launch of Windows 10. Let's get Started! 1. Pin an app to the Start Menuhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Windows/Windows%2010%20Bookzine/Customise%20The%20Start%20Menu/Slide-One-420-90.jpg We'll begin by adding programs to the new Start menu. If you're familiar with how to do this in Windows 7, it follows exactly the same routine here. Find the app you wish to add, right-click it and select 'Pin to Start'. 2. On the tileshttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Windows/Windows%2010%20Bookzine/Customise%20The%20Start%20Menu/Slide-Two-420-90.jpg We now have the app's icon pinned to the Start menu as a tile. You can customise your Start menu by resizing and moving the tiles around. Right click one to bring up a drop-down menu. Here you can switch live tiles off or on, resize them and more. 3. Resizing pinned appshttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Windows/Windows%2010%20Bookzine/Customise%20The%20Start%20Menu/Slide-Three-420-90.jpg Here we'll resize a tile to make it smaller. Apps downloaded from the Windows Store offer more resizing options, while other programs only have the option to go from medium to small. You can drag the tiles into the order that suits you best. 4. Group and titlehttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Windows/Windows%2010%20Bookzine/Customise%20The%20Start%20Menu/Slide-Four-420-90.jpg You can also arrange tiles into groups. The groups can be renamed into categories, for example. To do this, move your cursor just above each column group and left-click once, you can now type in a name for the group. 5. All appshttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Windows/Windows%2010%20Bookzine/Customise%20The%20Start%20Menu/Slide-Five-420-90.jpg With Windows 10 Start Menu comes a slight change in the way you access programs (which is similar to Windows 7) – the All Apps tab at the bottom of the Start Menu brings up a list of everything installed on your computer for quick and easy access. 6. Resize the entire menuhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Windows/Windows%2010%20Bookzine/Customise%20The%20Start%20Menu/Slide-Six-420-90.jpg If you feel the Start menu is still a little too big, you can resize the entire thing. As you would with a window, move the mouse to the edge of the Start menu and left-click. You can now hold to drag and resize the Start Menu to the size you want. 7. Classic Windows 8 Modehttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Windows/Windows%2010%20Bookzine/Customise%20The%20Start%20Menu/Slide-Seven-420-90.jpg If you really don't want to leave Windows 8 and miss the Tile menu, Microsoft has it covered. Simply click the diagonal arrow in the top right-hand corner of the Start Menu. From now on, this will expand the Start menu across the screen. 8. Enabling Tablet Modehttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Windows/Windows%2010%20Bookzine/Customise%20The%20Start%20Menu/Slide-Eight-420-90.jpg If you have a 2-in-1 tablet, the more desktop-like interface may not be right for you. If you want to change back to a style more akin to Windows 8, click Settings from the Start menu, then go to 'System' and switch on 'Tablet Mode'. First reported by Microsoft-News.com, the images of the new build fail to show any hugely significant improvements beyond the new icons detailed on one Twitter account that may not even arrive in this build. The new icons include the Calendar, Mail, Photos, and Calculator apps and don't add anything beyond a refreshed look for each of those programs. There is very little else to get excited about and most of the pictures provided by WZor simply show various screens from the new build that aren't any different to the Windows 10 build that came before it. This leak comes hot on the heels of details on Windows 10 Build 10537 being leaked from various unofficial sources. Build 10537Build 10537 has reputedly added opening and closing animations to Store apps, brought newly revamped icons to the Device Manager part of the OS, and improved the background colour on context menus. Microsoft has been continuing to roll out new Windows 10 builds to its Insider Program members ever since the OS was released to the public at the end of July. Anyone signed up to the program gets to try the very latest features before anyone else and if nothing else if allows them bragging rights. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/software/Windows/Windows%2010%20Bookzine/post-install-hero-470-75.jpghttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Windows/Windows%2010%20Bookzine/post-install-hero-420-90.jpg Occasionally, things don't work out. And this might be the case with Windows 10. We're not judging you. Maybe something's gone wrong. Perhaps you tried the Insider Preview and now want to clean it off and install the full version, or maybe you're suffering from installer's remorse and want what you once had. If you've upgraded from a previous version of Windows, anything from XP up, there's a chance you can simply roll back to your previous installation – settings, software and all, including any files, such as photos or documents you've added to your Win 10 installation – without any trouble. After installing Windows 10, and before doing anything else, rename the folder 'windows.old', which will be sitting in your C: drive. Call it something like 'win8.old'. Windows looks for 'windows.old' when doing a rollback, and it'll be replaced any time you install a new build of Windows – meaning that installing a new version of Windows 10 will overwrite it. Once you've renamed the file, it won't be overwritten. Alternatively, you could copy this file to an external drive. Rolling backIf you're ready to switch to your previous version, first change the name of your renamed folder back to 'windows.old' (first renaming the current 'windows.old' folder, if there is one), or copy it back onto your drive if you've stored it elsewhere. Next, use Windows 10's search function to find 'recovery options', and click the top entry in the list. Under 'go back to an earlier build', click 'Get Started', click through the options, answer the questions, and be prepared for a bit of a wait. Alternatively, you'll likely be given a Windows Rollback option when you boot your machine, particularly if you're using a preview build of Windows 10 – this will do the exact same thing. Note that you'll lose any programs you may have installed on Windows 10, so you'll need to install these again on your new (old) operating system, but you should find that personal files stay. You'll also have to use your old password; if you've changed it for Windows 10, this change won't be passed back. Bear in mind that Windows 10 will leave its mark in the form of a folder called 'windows.xxx', stored in your C: drive. This can be reasonably large – around 20GB – so you'll want to get rid of it once you've booted into your old OS. The disk cleanup tool will do this automatically. The reverse is also true, of course; if you're settled in Windows 10 and are sure you won't want to go back to your old OS, you can safely clear off your 'windows.old' folder and free up a little room. Go extremeIf things have gone so wrong that you're unable to use Windows 10's rollback feature – if, for instance, you've inadvertently replaced your windows.old folder with one containing a previous build of Windows 10 – you'll need to restore from a backup. If you followed our advice about using Macrium Reflect in our previous guide, this will be reasonably straightforward. Begin by setting up the Macrium Reflect recovery environment on a USB stick or DVD-R (use another computer if your current one is not working properly) boot into that, and use your backup to re-write the old operating system to the drive. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/MacLifeWebContent/HowToUseiOS9News/news_hero_FLAT-470-75.jpgiOS 9 is here, and even if it isn't as revolutionary as some of Apple's mobile operating systems, it does have plenty of new features - one of which is the News app. Replacing Newsstand, the News app is a Flipboard-style application that creates a personalized newsfeed just for you, based on your preferences and interests. Keep reading to learn how it works. Customizing the NewsWhen you fire up News for the first time you'll be asked to pick your favorite publications from a lengthy list. There's much more than what you can see initially; keep sliding up to see more publications. There's a lot here - everything from Sports Illustrated to Good Housekeeping to USA Today - so you should be able to find something you're interested in. But don't worry about making the perfect selections; you can always make changes later. After you've picked a few publications (or a whole bunch of them) you'll have the option to get personalized news sent straight to your inbox. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/HowToUseiOS9News/News-1-favorites-420-90.jpg To continue personalizing your News experience, you should visit the Explore tab (at the bottom of the screen in the middle) next. Here you can pick more suggested channels: specific publications or topics (sports, politics, entertainment, etc.) that will pull in stories from a variety of sources. Tap on a topic to check it out, or hit the plus button to add it to your personalized feed. In addition, you can delve in further by scrolling down to the browse section, which lets you narrow your focus by picking from even more specific publications and topics. If you still can't find what you're looking for, click on the search tab to try to track down exactly what you want. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/HowToUseiOS9News/News-2-Explore-420-90.jpg All the topics and publications you've chosen to add to your feed will appear under the Favorites tab. If you decide you're no longer interested in certain content, tap the Edit button in the upper-right corner, then hit the X that appears on each channel to remove it from your feed. Using Your News FeedNow that you've tailored your feed with the topics that interest you, you're ready to start reading. Go to the For You tab to see all the pertainent content compiled into an attractive, personalized, magazine-style list. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/HowToUseiOS9News/News-3-ForYou-420-90.jpg If you have the Show Story Previews option on in Settings > News, then you'll usually be taken to a shortened version of the story when you click on a headline. Sometimes you may be required to click through to the site to get the entire story. (If the Show Story Previews option is off, you may be taken straight to the content provider's site.) Also, when reading stories in preview mode, you'll often see a box with a subject below the headline. Tap it to be taken to more stories about the same type of subject. When browsing the headlines in the For You feed, you can press down on any story for a second to be provided with Share Story, Save or Like options. Icons for these same options can be found at the bottom of a page while reading a story. As you'd expect, Share Story lets you send a story link to yourself or others in a variety of ways, Like adds an easily identifiable heart icon to the story, and Save bookmarks a story so you can check it out later; you'll find it in the Saved tab at the bottom-right of the screen. From the Saved tab, you can also check your history in case you want to go back to a story you previously read. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/HowToUseiOS9News/News-4-Share-420-90.jpg And if you're wondering what happened to all your old magazines that were in the new-defunct Newsstand app, worry not — any magazines you subscribe to exist as their own apps and have been relocated to a Newsstand folder on your home screen. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/HowToUseiOS9News/News-5-OldNewsstand-420-90.jpg http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238386018103/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/49f3b55e/sc/28/rc/1/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238386018103/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/49f3b55e/sc/28/rc/2/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238386018103/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/49f3b55e/sc/28/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/238386018103/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/49f3b55e/sc/28/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/238386018103/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/49f3b55e/sc/28/a2t.imghttp://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/49f3b55e/sc/28/mf.gifhttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/OXHXNBxmM0Y

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/Connected%20home/iRobot/Roomba%20980/Launch/Roomba980-3-470-75.jpgPage 1iRobot CEO Colin Angle took the stage at an NYC launch event Wednesday to answer the burning question: would the next-gen Roomba suck even more than before? Through explaining how its latest Roomba, the 980, houses a variety of cutting-edge consumer robotics tech, he concluded that, yes, iRobot's latest efforts really do suck. Twice as much, to be specific. The Roomba 980 aims to improve on iRobot's current lineup, which currently commands nearly 70% of the home robotics market share. How? This Roomba cleans more of your house, does a better job in doing so, and also acts as the company's launchpad into the Internet of Things. But before Angle actually revealed the product, he gave us a history lesson to illustrate its improvements in robotics. Lewis & Clark, a lesson in roboticsAngle began by going backward: he dove into discussing the ambitious journey westward by 19th century explorers, Lewis & Clark, who were tasked with the not-very-simple job of finding the West Coast of the US. It's a captivating tale, but I was struggling to see how he would tie this back around to a new Roomba vacuum. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Connected%20home/iRobot/Roomba%20980/Launch/Roomba980-4-420-90.jpg Then, he plotted the duo's path to the West on a screen. It was a jagged path, etched by trial and error. It took them over a year until they arrived at the Pacific. Angle then finally made the connection I'd been waiting for: this zig-zag, haphazard movement was how previous Roomba vacuums functioned. The Roomba 980 works more like Lewis & Clark's faster, more efficient travels back East. The trip, which took half the time, was made easier by following landmarks the explorers mapped out previously and by avoiding the pitfalls that lead to wasted time and resources. Roomba 980's trick for improved suckageThe new Roomba goes where no Roomba has gone before. Well, that's not really true. But it can traverse the rooms in your home with an enriched intelligence and efficiency. It does this by making an image-based map of the rooms in your home by utilizing its visual simultaneous localization and mapping technique, or vSLAM for short. iRobot claims that vSLAM is a breakthrough in technology for consumer robotics. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Connected%20home/iRobot/Roomba%20980/Launch/Roomba980-6-420-90.jpg To understand the need for vSLAM, Angle divulged the company's initial struggle to affordably bring vision to the Roomba 980. Its higher-end robotics used in areas of conflict (ones too risky for a human to safely set foot in) are able to see using a laser-powered system. It's incredibly effective and accurate, but much too expensive to put into a consumer-facing product. In comes vSLAM, a set of technologies that pairs a standard camera to generate a visual map along with a set of sensors to help keep track of where the 980 has and hasn't cleaned yet. Working together, the system can also find and keep focus on areas that are particularly dirty until the muck is taken care of – much like how you would clean yourself. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Connected%20home/iRobot/Roomba%20980/Launch/Roomba980-5-420-90.jpg This, and some other new and interesting functionality packed into the Roomba 980's brains, make up what the company is calling iAdapt 2.0. Some of its new-fangled capabilities allow the 980 to nap for a 90-minute charge when its 2-hour battery is zapped, then return to the exact point where it left off to finish the job. Older Roombas would call it a day once their batteries expired, but not the 980. Looking to improve on the vacuum's aim so it can navigate gently through your house (as to not ding up your belongings or fall down the stairs), iRobot's latest can detect subtle differences between hard floors and carpeting on the fly, even boosting the power output to suck even more when it's on carpet. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Connected%20home/iRobot/Roomba%20980/Launch/Roomba980-2-420-90.jpg The camera detects - and remembers - furniture as points of interest in your home and can traverse in between chair legs and underneath hard-to-reach spots. Once the visual map is made, the 980 doesn't rely on the camera as much. Christian Cerda, an iRobot exec, even placed a cloth over the vacuum's camera, and it proceeded to clean intelligently by relying on its other sensors. Thanks to the Roomba 980's many methods of vision and dirt detection, iRobot hopes to closer mimic how humans use a push vacuum and to remedy the complaints that previous iterations of Roomba would clean the same areas over and over. iRobot claims that its latest doesn't tread the same spot twice without reason. Roomba's ties with IoTThe final part of the Roomba 980 package is its smart connected functionality. With an app called iRobot HOME, owners can wirelessly trigger the 980 to clean. Not only that, they can also schedule a daily cleaning and customize whether the 980 does a regular job or a deep clean from afar. And, unlike with previous Roomba models, the app reports the 980's activity, which allows you to double-check that it actually did its homework, so to speak, while you are away. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Connected%20home/iRobot/Roomba%20980/Launch/Roomba980-7-420-90.jpg You can still trigger the Roomba to tidy up with a press of its "Clean" button located centrally on its top, but the app aims to make the process easy and convenient for users who aren't home to tend to chores themselves. The Roomba 980 launches today for $899 in the US. iRobot is looking to Q4 of this year for its entrance into global markets for an undetermined price. Convenience and overall "neat" factor aside, is iRobot's latest smart vacuum robot worth the money? Let us know if you're a current Roomba owner and whether this new one has you looking to upgrade.
