The T-Voice app lets Telstra ADSL and NBN broadband customers make or receive phone calls on their mobile handsets or tablets within their own wireless network. Best of all, every phone call made via the T-Voice app will fall under your usual home phone rates, which will let Telstra customers make the most of their home phone bundles, many of which feature unlimited local and national calls. How does it work?T-Voice can wirelessly connect up to seven of your smart devices to Telstra's T-Gateway home modem using the same technology used for regular landline calls on the Gateway network. Along with the ability to make and receive home phone calls, the T-Voice app also gives customers handset access to other standard Telstra home phone features, such as MessageBank, call waiting and call forwarding. The T-Voice app is now available to download on the App Store and Google Play store. Best Telstra phone: 5 we recommend

  3. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/Fitness_tech/Jawbone/UP3/UP3-470-75.jpgWhen Jawbone rolled out its latest generation of fitness trackers, the UP2 and UP3, they ditched the physical button of the UP24 and replaced it with a temperamental touch interface to switch between step and sleep tracking modes. It was a frustration, especially given the automatic sleep tracking of the Fitbit Charge HR. But now Jawbone has released a firmware update for the newer UP bands that does away with mode switching, allowing the band to automatically track sleep without any user input. The touch controls are still used to silence alarms and notifications, but are otherwise made redundant in this update. An update with heartUP3 owners also benefit from the update with the addition of passive heart rate monitoring. In addition to recording your resting heart rate at the moment you wake up, the UP3 will now also record your heart rate while you're sitting down, not moving. The argument is that by including resting heart rate with passive heart rate, users will be able to start getting an insight into the effects of external things like stress or caffeine on their heart. The firmware update requires the latest version of the UP app on iOS or Android, and is available now. 4. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/TRBC/Abstract/Cyber%20lock/iStock_000020317880Small-Henrik5000-470-75.jpgSmartphones have traditionally been a handy place to indulge in adult content without anyone watching over you. Until now. Security research firm Zscaler has found a nasty piece of ransomware that tricks users into thinking they are downloading an Android-based pornography app. Once the app is opened, the ransomware takes a photo of the smartphone owner using the front camera, locks the phone and demands $500 (£330) to unlock the device. The app in question is known as Adult Player. The ransomware demands money be paid via PayPal, after which the device will be decrypted and unblocked. Embarrassment turned onIt's certainly not the first time that ransomware has been used in this way. Earlier this year Porn Droid, an almost identical piece of ransomware, asked for $500 on behalf of the FBI after claiming it had found the phone's user watching child pornography. In the case of Adult Player, the embarrassment factor is ramped up by the fact that the ransom message keeps the handset's screen switched on at all times and comes back to haunt users even after the phone is restarted. Anyone that has been caught by the trap is urged to follow the steps outlined by Zscaler in its piece of research covering the ransomware. 5. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/software/Windows/Windows%2010%20Bookzine/Getting%20Started%20with%20a%20W10%20Device/W10-getting-started-470-75.jpgIntroduction and One account for allSo, you've bought a shiny new laptop or tablet. It's unpacked, plugged in, and humming gently. What's the first thing you should do? The answer is set up a Microsoft account. Don't be disheartened by the word 'account', because a Microsoft account is the key to unlocking everything that's great about Windows 10, as well as the wider suite of Microsoft products, tools and services. One account for allAt its most basic, a Microsoft account acts as your PC's first line of defence. That's because the password you choose when opening your account becomes the one that grants access to your copy of Windows 10 and, ultimately, to your new device. Move beyond that and a Microsoft account also lets you access your email. Take a further step and your account will let you explore great products such as Skype, and your Office 365 subscription; it will let you buy games, music, apps and films, and access your videos, photographs and documents via Microsoft's OneDrive. In short, a Microsoft account is the gateway to Microsoft's magic kingdom. Before we delve into the nuts and bolts of setting up your account, it's worth looking at a little bit of simple computing theory. Specifically, we'll look at the cloud. Until very recently, information – your files, pictures, movies and documents – were all stored locally. In other words, they were stored inside your PC, and on a hard disk. The benefit was you could get at them quickly. There was, however, a big downside to this way of storing information. If you lost your laptop, you'd lose all of your files too. Also, if you wanted to view a file on a different machine, it would involve some particularly cumbersome messing about to get it. The cloud is a tech term used to describe a different type of storage. Here, your information lives on a remote computer, out on the internet. If you want to access information you just access that external machine and get at your data that way. This style of working has many benefits. If you lose your device, your data remains safe. Storing data in the cloud also makes it easy to access it from all your different computers and devices. A Microsoft account lets you embrace the benefits of this smarter way of working. In practice, it means your data will feel like it's following you around! When you've got everything set up, pictures taken on your phone will be viewable on your laptop, tablet or Xbox. You'll be able to get at your email, again, from any of your Microsoft devices. In a nutshell, you'll be able to get to all of your data, all of the time, in an instant. The only caveat is you'll need to be connected to the internet. If you're not, your machine will still work but, Windows 10's clever data-sharing features will be paused until you're next online. Safety & privacy, Get started, Final tasks Safety and privacyThe concept of storing your information on a computer you don't own and have never seen can feel rather threatening. That's because our information is precious to us, so handing over valuable stuff to a stranger might feel like a leap into the unknown. But there's no need to worry. Microsoft will take care of your data, storing it very securely and backed up, cosseted and cared for like the Crown Jewels. In fact, statistically, you're more likely to lose data through your computer's hard disk failing than through Microsoft having a catastrophic problem. There is, however, one critical point of weakness, and that's you. Or, more specifically, the password you choose when creating your Microsoft account (see the walkthrough below). It needs to be difficult to guess, so don't use words that appear in the dictionary, and avoid names of your friends and family. Rather, use something that combines upper and lower case letters with numbers. Given the importance of your password, we'd advise thinking about it carefully. Microsoft has made a handy tool that'll help your check the strength of your prospective password – http://bit.ly/1fHVk8D. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Windows/Windows%2010%20Bookzine/Getting%20Started%20with%20a%20W10%20Device/W10-Change-the-Look-420-90.jpg Let's get startedTurn on and boot your machine, then decide what colour you want Windows to be dressed in. Just move the on-screen slider through the pallet until your reach a shade you like. Don't worry if you change your mind at a later date, the colour isn't fixed and you can amend it. The following screens you'll see cover settings – here you can just click 'Express settings'. With that done you'll be asked for your Microsoft account details. If you have an account already, enter the user name and password when prompted. If you haven't got one, click or tap 'Create a new account'. Next, you'll be walked through the process of making your account by tapping in some basic personal details, such as your name, date of birth and email address. See the walkthrough on this page for more details on this. When you've filled in the forms, Microsoft will send a verification code to your email address or mobile phone (you can choose which). When you receive the code you'll need to enter it into Windows 10. And, you're done. The rest of the process is automatic (though a little slow – it can take a few minutes for Windows 10 to configure itself), and will include an automatic reboot. You're now almost free to start using Windows 10. Final tasksOnce Windows 10 is up and running there's one final piece of housekeeping that will need to be done. You need to ensure Windows 10 is fully updated with all of Microsoft's security and performance patches. These will keep your PC happy, healthy and safe. To install the patches look out for notifications popping up in the system tray area. Alternatively, click on the Search bar, type Check for updates, and then click 'Check now'. The process will take a few minutes to complete. With that done, you're all set to start exploring Windows 10 and everything it has to offer! 6. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/mobile_phones/Vodafone/Vodafone_sunset-470-75.jpgWhile the days of hideous bill shock from excessive data usage are pretty much behind us these days, there has still been a fundamental shortage of mobile plans catering to the heavy data user. Vodafone has tried to address this today by launching a new "sumo-sized" plan, which combines 15GB of data with a new phone (although handset costs may be extra) and unlimited talk and text in Australia for $130 a month over 24 months. Plus, customers who sign up for the plan before November 3 this year will get that 15GB of data boosted to 20GB at no extra cost. Something for nothingVodafone is also trying to sweeten the deal with additional perks, like unlimited standard international calls to 10 selected destinations from Australia, and access to Vodafone's $5 roaming plans. There's also a complimentary 12 month subscription to premium services like Spotify, Stan and the Sydney Morning Herald thrown in for good measure. With 20GB of monthly data at your disposal, you might actually be able to take advantage of that Stan subscription and watch some of the best TV shows on Stan on the go. The new plan will be available from September 9 – right in time for the iPhone 6S announcement. 20GB too much for you? 7. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/av_accessories/Apple%20TV%20review/Hardware/P3271500-470-75.JPGCasual gamers, watch out! Apple might be coming for you when it announces its updated Apple TV in San Francisco on Wednesday. According to a report in The New York Times, the next generation of the Apple TV will see Tim Cook & Co. using games as a primary selling point for the device, offering a lighter experience than those coming from behemoths like the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The device was previously rumoured to come with a smarter remote, fitted with motion sensors that would allow compatibility out-of-the-box with tilt-heavy gaming, as well as Siri support, an interface overhaul, and its own App Store. Don't hate the player...The NYT report states that the new device will have a starting price of around US$150, which is a significant jump from the US$69 asking price for the current generation. But US$150 is still nowhere near the outlay required to indulge in the more hardcore gaming experiences offered by Sony and Microsoft, so they probably don't need to be concerned about gamers heading to Apple for their next Call of Duty fix. Even if it sticks to more casual titles, embracing console gaming could see Cupertino rake it in. With the global games business currently worth US$75 billion – US$27 billion of which comes from console gaming – and a third of Apple's revenue already coming from sales of games and other software purchased in its app stores, the new Apple TV could pave the way for Apple to become a major player in yet another tech arena. Trying to keep your cool? It's okay to feel excited about the iPhone 6S launch.
  8. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/MacLifeWebContent/HowToFaceTimeSignIn/Ask-facetime-hero-470-75.jpgGot an Apple, Mac or iOS tech question? We have the answer. FaceTime is a great way to see people from afar, but what do you do when FaceTime won't let you sign in? This week we have a reader who's experiencing that very problem, but don't worry; we have some ideas to help get FaceTime back in action. QuestionMy iMac will not let me sign into FaceTime Version 3.0. FaceTime preferences says I am signed out, but I'm using the right Apple ID and password. When I go to the main window, FaceTime either ignores me or keeps telling me to check Network connections. I've never been able to connect. However, I have no problem using FaceTime on my iPhone 5. Any suggestions? AnswerThere could potentially be a few reasons for this error message, especially since you're connected online and are not experiencing other network issues. The first is that the Apple ID you're trying to connect with has two-step verification. If this is the case, then you must create an "app specific password" that is used with FaceTime on the Mac and only with FaceTime on the Mac (when this is enabled, you create a new password that is used for each app with your Apple ID). To create an app-specific password for FaceTime, follow these steps: 1. Open Safari and navigate to appleid.apple.com. 2. Click "Manage Your Apple ID" and sign in with your Apple ID. 3. Select Password & Security > Generate an App-Specific Password. Using the password that was given to you, sign into FaceTime on the Mac using your Apple ID and this password. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/HowToFaceTimeSignIn/Ask_FaceTime-2step-420-90.jpg If that doesn't quite do the trick, then while you're in the appleid.apple.com account management, ensure that your email address is entered correctly, and ensure that you've typed in that email address for your Apple ID to sign in when using FaceTime on the Mac. You'll also want to make sure that the email address you're using has been verified with Apple. To check that the email is verified, select "Name, ID and Email Addresses" inside of the appleid.apple.com website, and ensure a green "Verified" check is displayed on the Apple ID and Primary Email Address field. 9. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/mobile_phones/iPhone/iOS%209/ios-9-release-date-470-75.jpg Introductionhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/mobile_phones/iPhone/iOS%209/ios-9-release-date-update-hero-420-90.jpg With Apple's September 9 iPhone event just under a week away, iPhone and iPad users are in for a whole slew of new features for the company's latest mobile operating system, iOS 9. From picture-in-picture to split view and all of the various performance optimizations in between, there's certainly a whole lot to look forward to. Despite all of these goodies, there are still a number of ways Apple could stand to improve its mobile OS, especially for business users. With that in mind, let's take a gander at five things Apple could do to make iOS a true productivity superstar. Deep stylus supporthttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/mobile_phones/iPhone/iOS%209/review/ios-9-review-apple-maps-problems-420-90.jpg This is an area that Samsung and Microsoft have been perfecting for a while and, unfortunately, Apple has fallen behind. There's a reason that Samsung's Note line and Microsoft's Surface Pro 3 have become so popular with the business crowd: being able to quickly pull out a stylus to jot down notes or mark up the important points on a presentation is an incredibly handy thing to have, especially if you have fat fingers. While there are third-party bluetooth stylus options, they require their own connected apps and often need support built into other apps for things like palm rejection. A much more elegant solution would be for Apple to work to integrate stylus support deep into iOS, and a first-party stylus from Apple itself would be great as well. With rumors that the iPad Pro could finally be right around the corner, with a possible reveal at Apple's September 9 event, now seems like as good a time as any for an Apple stylus to make an appearance. Alongside improved handwriting features in the iOS 9 notes app, along with the possible appearance of Force Touch on the new iPhones, allowing iOS to detect pressure, the groundwork seems to be there for deeper stylus integration. Lock screen widgetshttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/mobile_phones/iPhone/iOS%209/review/ios-9-review-update-for-iphone-420-90.jpg Apple first introduced widgets in iOS 8, finally bringing the OS up to parity with Google's Android - sort of. One major hindrance with widgets in iOS is that they are confined to the "Today" view. This requires a user to swipe down on the taskbar to access widgets, which sort of defeats their purpose of giving you an overview at a quick glance. One way to address this would be to allow widgets to be viewed on the lock screen. It's true that there are ways to achieve this, but they involve jailbreaking your iPhone or iPad, which is not recommended if you value the security of your device. Official support for lock screen widgets would be a welcome improvement in iOS, enabling quicker access to information that you deem to be important, like calendar events and weather. While it may be a relatively minor addition, eliminating the number of swipes required to access information at a glance could improve ease of use for times when you would rather avoid fumbling with your phone as much as possible. Multiple user profileshttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/mobile_phones/iPhone/iOS%209/ios-9-multiple-accounts-420-90.jpg This is another area where Apple has fallen a bit behind its rivals. Despite supporting robust user profiles in OS X, the same feature has yet to grace iOS. Meanwhile, Android introduced user profiles in Lollipop, and they seem to be enjoying some success. The immediate benefits of multiple user profiles are obvious for the normal user, enabling the ability to share your device with someone to look something up without leaving your data wide open to prying eyes. However, where the feature becomes a game changer is the possibility of separate profiles for work and personal use on the same device. What would be interesting to see is a feature for businesses like Google's Android for Work, which essentially allows you to stick to one device for both work and personal use. Profiles are kept separate, with users switching between a secure work environment and a personal setup on the same phone. Not only would this allow you to sort of "switch" out of work mode after hours, but you'd also be freed from the minor annoyance of having to carry around two phones for different purposes. Mouse supporthttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/mobile_phones/iPhone/iOS%209/download-iOS-9/download-ios-9-beta-5-420-90.jpg A lot of people use keyboards with their iPad, and there is no shortage of third-party options for those who want that experience. It can be incredibly useful if you need to sit down and finish typing up a quick report in between flights at the airport, but the whole idea of using an iPad as a laptop replacement falls short for one simple reason: lack of bluetooth mouse support. It's true that you can get along just fine without a mouse in such situations, but typing a paragraph and then reaching up to tap your way through to your next task just feels cumbersome. Microsoft has sort of nailed this issue with its Surface line of hybrid tablets - though, admittedly, they are running full versions of Windows - and it would be great to see Apple make a similar effort with iOS on the iPad. Apple may have no interest in making the iPad a laptop replacement, but there is clearly a market for such a thing. The ability to pair a mouse with an iPad and have iOS present a cursor would definitely be a boon for productivity applications and alleviate the awkward process of jumping back and forth between touching and typing. Make Proactive more proactivehttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/mobile_phones/iPhone/iOS%209/review/ios-9-review-apple-maps-transit-directions-420-90.jpg One of the big highlights of iOS 9 is a new feature called Proactive. The feature has drawn numerous comparisons to Google Now on Android, and with good reason. Both services make an effort to bring you useful information, like traffic conditions for your morning commute and calendar events, as you need it. However, one area where we'd like to see Apple take a cue from Google is with automatic alerts for things like upcoming flights, package delivery information and upcoming bills. Google harvests this information in Google Now through emails in a connected Gmail account, and given Apple's stance on privacy, it's unlikely we'll see this feature make it to iOS. Still, since it's fairly automatic and requires no extra input from the user, such integration could make Proactive that much better. A lot of this information can be pushed through notifications from third-party apps, but an overview screen with reminders of your upcoming flights, deliveries and more all in one place could certainly help you more easily stay on top of your day. http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238385214001/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/499517d6/sc/28/rc/1/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238385214001/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/499517d6/sc/28/rc/2/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238385214001/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/499517d6/sc/28/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/238385214001/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/499517d6/sc/28/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/238385214001/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/499517d6/sc/28/a2t.imghttp://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/499517d6/sc/28/mf.gifhttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/-i5nGAYs_1w
  10. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/software/Apple/Apple%20Music/apple-music-hero-470-75.jpgAs the three month Apple Music trial period draws to a close for those who signed up at launch, Apple has confirmed that there are still big improvements coming to the company's Spotify rival. In an interview with The Guardian, VP of iTunes International Oliver Schusser admitted that the launch of Apple Music wasn't without issues and that the company is working hard to improve the service, taking into account user feedback. "There's a lot of work going into making the product better. Our focus is on editorial and playlists, and obviously we have teams all around the world working on that, but we're also adding features and cleaning up certain things," Schusser is quoted in the article. With Apple differentiating itself from rivals with a wide selection of curated playlists, as well as the successful launch of its Beats 1 radio platform, the focus for now consists of fixing issues and adding new features. Doing their homeworkOne big area of focus is the Apple Music Connect platform, which allows fans to connect directly with artists. Schusser claims the service is picking up steam, with more and more artists starting to engage with the platform. The company is also committed to bringing Apple Music to both Sonos and Android platforms within the next few months, although Schusser claims there's still a fair amount of work to be done. Still, with over 11 million customers currently signed up for the three month trial, those who signed up on the June 30 launch day will soon be faced with the question of whether or not to pay up the monthly subscription fee. For Apple though, the number of people signed up is less of a focus than trying to improve the product, as Schusser told the Guardian. "Our focus is more on the product than anything else: we spend most of our energy on that," he's quoted as saying. "That's more our priority than checking every hour the amount of people who have signed up. We have more of a long-term perspective on this." Already a subscriber? 11. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/software/Microsoft/Windows%2010%20Lenovo/Embargoed%20until%209PM%20PDT%20on%2028%20JULY/Windows%2010%20Desktop-470-75.JPGMicrosoft is making a new Mail feature available on Windows 10. With the latest Insider Preview build, you can now turn off conversation view in the Mail app. The bad news is that you won't have access to this feature unless you're an Insider willing to test software for Microsoft ahead of commercial availability. When Microsoft debuted the new Mail client on Windows 10, all emails were grouped into conversations by subject, rather than by time stamp. Unfortunately, Microsoft did not give users the option to turn off conversation view, at least until now. Given that the feature is being tested by Windows Insiders, it could eventually make it into the next big Windows 10 release. Microsoft has a planned OS update for November, and this could introduce conversation view into Mail for all users. MailMail is one of a number of apps that Microsoft redesigned for Windows 10. Together with Calendar and People, these apps deliver similar experiences to the Outlook app that Microsoft had launched for iOS, Android and Windows 10 Mobile. On Windows 10, these apps offer better support for non-Microsoft services, like synchronizing People contact information with Google. With the Mail experience, another feature that is lacking is a unified inbox. The current setup does not allow you to view emails across different email accounts. If you have more than one email account, you still need to switch between them. Enterprise customers who need a more powerful email and personal information management system can always use the Outlook program that comes with Office 365. Windows as a ServiceWith the launch of Windows 10, Microsoft is changing its strategy with Windows. Rather than delivering Windows as a software product, Microsoft is positioning it as a service. This means that the product will receive continuous updates. Updates will automatically download in the background and get installed when they're ready. Unfortunately, this means that you can't skip an update if you don't like what it does, but Microsoft has shown that it is listening to its users to deliver positive experiences. The OS is available free to owners upgrading from Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 during the first year of release, and the promotional offer has attracted more than 75 million installs in just less than a month. 12. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/MacLifeWebContent/Numbers%20for%20Mac/numbers_for_mac_tips-hero-470-75.jpgTips 1-5Data entry isn't most people's idea of fun, but the following 15 tips might change that. These shortcuts and advanced techniques will make quick work of your spreadsheets, so even the most tedious tasks breeze by. 1. Password-protect your documents
You can do this for all iWork documents, but spreadsheets can contain especially sensitive data, so it's most appropriate here. To set a password, pick that option from the File menu. You can add the password to your keychain so you don't have to enter it when you open the file on your Mac, but be wary of this option. Unless you have other security measures in place, such as your Mac requiring a password to wake from screen saver, this could leave the file vulnerable. If you have to convert your spreadsheet to Excel for sharing with some recipients, you have the option of adding a password to the exported file – but remember that this password only applies to this exported version, not to your original Numbers document. 2. Special types of cellsNumbers supports some special cells that make data entry really easy, including clickable checkboxes, star ratings, and pop-up menus so you can pick from a range of predetermined values. You can explore these options at the foot of the Data Format drop-down menu under the Cell pane of the Format sidebar. If you want to have a formula act on the data in these special cells, take a look at the window's bottom-left corner to see the actual, behind-the-scenes value that's recorded in that cell – such as FALSE for an unchecked checkbox and TRUE for a checked one – so you know what values to enter in your formula. 3. Copy and paste stylesThis one also works in all three iWork apps. The formal way to take a set of attributes (such as text size and color) from one object to another is to define it as a style – something you still have to do if you want to copy table styles – so you can easily reuse it or tweak it later, but if you want to do so quickly, you can just copy and paste it. Select some text, a picture, or a shape and then choose Format > Copy Style. Then select the object you want to apply that style to, and choose Format > Paste Style. 4. Copy and paste table stylesIf you tweak the formatting of a table on one sheet, you can then easily make all the others in your document match it by defining those tweaks as a style. Set up the table as you want it, select it, and then click the rightwards-pointing arrow in the Table Styles pane of the Format sidebar. Click the + in the top left corner. Once the style is defined, you can drag it to the first screen just to make it easier to access, and then select other tables and apply it to them. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/Numbers%20for%20Mac/copy_and_paste_table_styles-420-90.jpg 5. Copy from Excel! If you're trying to do something complex in Numbers, it's often hard to find help on the web, since Excel is so much more common. The good news is that many formulae have the same names and work largely the same way in the two apps, so it's still worth reading tips designed for Excel. We can't guarantee they'll all work, but in our experience it's a handy first step to try out. Also check out discussions.apple.com/community/iwork/numbers. Tips 6-106. Enter carriage returns within cellsPressing Return usually advances you to the next cell down in Numbers, but if you hold Option as you press it, you'll get a carriage return so you can enter text on a new line within the same cell. 7. Concatenate cellsThe ampersand symbol (&) has a special function on a spreadsheet, and that's to bring together values from other cells into one. Note that it's not adding them mathematically – if you have the value 3 in one cell and 4 in another, using '&' would produce the result 34 – but it's handy for grouping stuff. Let's say you have a list of surnames in column A, forenames in B, and titles in C. In column D you could use the formula =C2&B2&A2 to produce, for example, Mr Christopher Phin. Actually, that would give you MrChristopherPhin, so the formula needs to be =C2&" "&B2&" "&A2 to concatenate in some spaces. After you've filled the formula once though – in row 2, say – you don't have to laboriously enter it for every other row, as you'll discover in the next step. 8. Quickly extend values and formulaeYou can quickly copy the values or formulae of cells to other cells, and Numbers is smart about how it does this. The quick way to do it is to select a cell then move your mouse to the center of any of its four edges so that a yellow handle appears. Like in the example above, select the cell that contains your formula and then drag the yellow handle on the bottom edge down to fill the formula into the cells below it. Numbers is smart enough to infer that the references to row 2 should be replaced with references to row 3 in the next cell down, and so on. It's also a quick way to populate a sheet with repeating numbers. Type 1, 2, 3 into the first few cells, then drag the yellow handle down. Numbers will continue with 4, 5, 6 and so on. This works for other data types too – if you enter a few dates that are a week apart and extend the box, it will keep adding dates that a week on from the last. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/Numbers%20for%20Mac/quickly_extend-420-90.jpg 9. Conditional formattingYou can have cells change their appearance – highlighting the cell with a color, changing the appearance of text, and so on – based on whether some criteria are met. For example, if you've set a monthly budget but you've gone over it, you might change that number's color to red. Select the cells you want to act on, and click the Format button to reveal the sidebar. Click the sidebar's Cell tab and then click Conditional Highlighting… at the bottom to set up formatting rules for the selected cells. As always, there are a load of useful preset styles, but scroll to the bottom of the list and choose Custom Style to set up your own. 10. Lock objectsIf you lock any element on a Numbers page (or in any other iWork app) it can't be moved or deleted, making it perfect for standing information such as a logo and a text box detailing terms and conditions on invoice sheets. Just select the object then press Command + L, or choose Lock in the Arrange menu. Now, even if someone selects it, either by clicking on it or by pressing Command + A, and then hits Delete, it will stay on the page. If you need to adjust the element, select it and choose Arrange > Unlock or press Option + Command + L. Tips 11-1511. Filter your spreadsheetOne really handy feature in Numbers is the ability to filter your tables. In this way, you can quickly focus on bits of data that you need to examine more closely. What's more, you can set the filters up and then switch them on and off with a checkbox, hiding or revealing data instantly. For example, if you used a Numbers spreadsheet to track invoices, you could set up a filter so that you can hide invoices that have been paid by clicking the Sort & Filter button at the top-right. There are a few ways you could do it, but if you have a column recording the dates your invoices were paid, add a filter for that column to match the condition "cell is blank." 12. Temporarily highlight a cell's column and rowIt's easy for your eye to skip a row or a column on big spreadsheets, so hold Option while the pointer is over a cell to highlight the cell's row and column in blue. (If you do this often, consider using Numbers' Alternating Row Color formatting option, which makes it easier to read across wide spreadsheets.) http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/Numbers%20for%20Mac/temporarily_highlight-420-90.jpg 13. Add headers and footers to printed pagesWhen you print Numbers documents you get a page number automatically centered at the bottom of each page, but it's not clear how to remove it or add other information to the header and footer. Moving the pointer over the top or bottom of the print layout display you get after you press Command + P displays a thin grey box divided into three. Click in any one of these areas (including the one with the page number, which you're able to delete) and a text pane will appear next to the Page Setup options in the sidebar. Here you can change the format of the header and footer text, and choose whether they appear on all sheets or only the sheet you're typing in. Under the Insert menu you'll find options such as Page Number and Page Count – which you could combine by choosing Page Number, typing " of " and then choosing Page Count – and Date & Time. To change a date's format, click on it after you've inserted it. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/Numbers%20for%20Mac/adding_headers_and_footers-420-90.jpg 14. Custom date and time formatsAs well as choosing from the extensive list of date and time formats built into Numbers, you can set up custom formats to mix dynamic data placeholders with entered text. For example, our friends at Mac|Life might track deadlines using a column of dates for their print edition and another column for their iPad edition, and in a third column note down how many days they have to build the latter after sending the former to the printers. By setting up a custom date format, they can display this as "[days] to make the iPad edition." 15. Reference cells on other sheetsLike most spreadsheet software, Numbers lets you set up multiple sheets per document, and it's easy to refer across these sheets in formulae. You could, for example, have a price list on a second sheet and an order form on the first. If you enter "3" as a quantity in column B on the order sheet then, in the total cost cell of the same row, start typing =B2* and then click on the tab at the top of the document to switch to the price list and click the appropriate cell. Numbers will reference that cell's value to calculate what three of that product costs. If the price list is updated, the order form will be too. If you need to change a cell reference in a formula that you've already written, double-click the cell that contains the formula. This reveals the formula in a floating bar. Click once on the colored lozenge that points to the currently referenced cell – if that cell is on a different sheet, the view will switch to it – then click on the new cell you want to reference. http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238385224847/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/498ccab4/sc/28/rc/1/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238385224847/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/498ccab4/sc/28/rc/2/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238385224847/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/498ccab4/sc/28/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/238385224847/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/498ccab4/sc/28/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/238385224847/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/498ccab4/sc/28/a2t.imghttp://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/498ccab4/sc/28/mf.gifhttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/SHLcM0zWTno

Windows 10 is expected to undergo a major revamp in November, according to WinBeta. The update will likely include Edge extensions and performance enhancements, and a new universal Messaging app for the desktop, among other updates, according to the report. The update, which Microsoft is internally calling "Windows 10 Update for November" or "Windows 10 November Update," has been available to Windows Insiders since mid-August. Potential updatesMicrosoft is working on adding support for the WebM open source HTML5 standard in Edge. A version of the standard will likely be included in the November update. Windows 10's latest build, which was unveiled earlier this week, included improvements to context menus and an update to the Windows Feedback Universal App. However, the new build still suffered from several issues, including a bug that causes the 64-bit Google Chrome browser to crash on launch, and Windows Hello face sign-on not working on certain devices. These issues should be fixed by the November unveiling. Windows 10Windows 10 has been downloaded onto more than 75 million devices and accounts for roughly 5% of all desktop web traffic. Many users are sticking to the familiar. Windows 7 accounts for 57.67% of desktop web traffic. 14. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/software/Windows/Windows%2010%20Bookzine/Universal%20new%20era/W10-A-Universal-New-Era-470-75.jpgIntroduction and a Mobile WinAs its release edged closer and closer, the full features and details of Windows 10 came into focus. We know, for example, that Windows 10 will mark the end of Windows Media Center, and Music has been replaced by an app called Groove. July 29th, 2015On the release date, Windows 10 became available in 190 countries and 111 languages. Getting laptop, tablet and phone makers ready for the back-to-school (and university) season with fresh copies of the new OS well ahead of time makes absolute sense. Mobile winLooking back to the Microsoft's Build developer conference, held in April, which was an opportunity for the company to show developers where it is right now, you can see many of the foundations laid by Microsoft. On the first day of Build, Myerson surprised the crowd when he announced that Windows 10 Mobile (which still hasn't been released, yet) will support apps written for iOS and Android. With some reworking, of course. Still, this will undoubtedly blow the Windows 10 app store wide open. So, when Windows 10 Mobile (for phones) launches, you'll be able to run Android apps, for example, on phones and small tablets (but not on a Surface, notebook or desktop PC). They'll run on an Android subsystem that's likely to be based on KitKat (using the same hooks once used to put a POSIX subsystem in Windows NT). http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Windows/Windows%2010%20Bookzine/Universal%20new%20era/W10-on-mobile-420-90.jpg Paranoid AndroidBut this doesn't mean any Android app will run and there are things they won't be able to do. "We replace the Android services with our own," said Microsoft's Kevin Gallo. "We are running them in our own container – conceptually we are running them as a universal app so we use a middleware layer for translating APIs across, but they still run in the Windows app security model." That will improve performance and battery life over Android, he suggested: "Apps are not running in the background and there are some changes made so they behave like a well-behaved app." Standard platform capabilities will be redirected to the Windows equivalents – that's the file system, contact and photo integration, camera, sensors and network connections. Not all Android apps will work well this way. "Messaging apps and those that have deep integration into background tasks will probably have issues running," Gallo told us, "and it also comes down to [where they have good] performance". But then, he pointed out, "not every app works in every Android distribution." Bringing Android apps to Windows Phones isn't the only way Microsoft is trying to bring developers and their apps to Windows 10. There's also the ability to wrap Win32 and Silverlight apps in the App-V container or to bundle up a website as an app (complete with API calls to add Windows 10 features) and distribute those through the Windows Store – and iOS developers can bring an Xcode project into Visual Studio and share source code between an iOS and Windows app. Building, Cortana and Staying SecureBuild onWindows 10 is now available on the Raspberry Pi 2 micro computer and Intel Minnowboard Max, in addition to the standard tablets, laptops and desktop systems you'd expect. Some specific tailoring had to be done to fit the operating system on these tiny machines, resulting in a version of the OS earning the name Windows 10 IoT Core. CortanaOne of the key features of Windows 10 is Microsoft's voice-based virtual assistant Cortana serves up information based on how people search the web and how they use their PCs. The Cortana interface also supplies suggestions for new apps, based on what people search for. Cortana also enables you to interact with apps purely through voice control. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Windows/Windows%2010%20Bookzine/Universal%20new%20era/W10-A-Universal-New-Era-420-90.jpg Staying secureRunning the world's most ubiquitous OS, Microsoft has always taken security seriously, often releasing patches daily to its various versions of Windows. Now, the company is looking to take its security measures to the next level, with two-factor authentication (2FA) becoming standard on enterprise versions of the OS. Microsoft also intends to protect user identities by storing user access tokens in a secure container that runs on top of Hyper-V technology, isolated from the rest of the OS. Windows 10 will also offer a data-loss prevention solution that will allow users to separate their corporate personae from their non-work ones. http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238385209580/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/498ba4d7/sc/28/rc/1/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238385209580/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/498ba4d7/sc/28/rc/2/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238385209580/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/498ba4d7/sc/28/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/238385209580/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/498ba4d7/sc/28/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/238385209580/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/498ba4d7/sc/28/a2t.imghttp://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/498ba4d7/sc/28/mf.gifhttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/lBig6KFEDLk
  15. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/events/IFA%202015/P1170141-470-75.JPGSamsung has announced that its new SmartThings hub has launched in the US and will arrive in the UK in just a few days - offering a first step into turning your entire home into a smart connected house. The SmartThings platform sits at the heart of Samsung's Internet of Things ecosystem and will allow people to link up their various smart devices (or at least the ones that work with the platform) into one central hub. That new hub has a more powerful processor with a battery back-up which allows for video monitoring of your house, and sensors for things like smoke and fire, leaks and floods and obviously video security. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/events/IFA%202015/P1170140-420-90.JPG That means you can sit back and monitor anything from your pets to the friendly neighborhood burglar from anywhere with a connection. But don't worry - you can watch video streams from your house but it will only record when an unexpected event is detected, like a door opening. Samsung has insisted that the driving force in making the Internet of Things central to our lives is our own needs and desires. The Korean giant has been pushing the SmartThings platform since buying it to serve as the base of its push into the brave new connected world. Not techBut although we are slowly adopting things like internet connected thermostats and security cameras, Samsung believes that technology will not hold the key. "It's important IoT is not driven by technology, but by people's expectations. Only then can it blend into our lives," said SmartThings founder Alex Hawkinson at the IFA press conference. "IoT will help create smarter cities, smarter nations and eventually a smarter world." 16. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/MacLifeWebContent/HowToUseWordForMac2016/new_Word-FINAL-470-75.jpgMastering the new Word for Machttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/HowToUseWordForMac2016/new_Word-FINAL-420-90.jpg After an extended public beta period earlier this year, Microsoft finally took the wraps off Office 2016 for Mac - including the latest version of Word - in July, making it available first to Office 365 subscribers, with a standalone version set to arrive later this month. In addition to a more streamlined, Retina Display-ready user interface in line with the company's mobile apps, Office 2016 debuts new OS X-friendly options like full-screen view and multitouch gestures. But that's not all: Word 2016 has a few other tricks up its sleeve, and we're here to walk you through seven features you won't want to overlook in the latest edition of this venerable word processor. Ribbon: Now you see it, now you don'thttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/HowToUseWordForMac2016/Word_Ribbon-420-90.jpg Office 2016 offers a leaner, meaner Ribbon that consolidates all of your favorite features and options into less screen real estate than ever, but let's face it: All that functionality still consumes a lot of space, even on a spacious desktop display. Thankfully, Word 2016 users can temporarily banish the entire Ribbon to... well, we don't exactly know where it goes when you click the small upward arrow in the right-hand corner, but the Ribbon neatly collapses out of sight until you choose to click the now-inverted arrow once more to bring it back. Save documents directly to PDF filehttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/HowToUseWordForMac2016/Word_PDF-420-90.jpg This is one of our absolute favorite new features of Office 2016, and one that might be a little less obvious until you go searching for it. With previous versions, saving a Word document required calling up the Print option and using OS X's native Print to PDF service, which never really felt like the way things should work. Now, users can simply select File > Print and choose PDF from the available File Format options to export a lovely portable version of the open document, ready to share with others. Improved document navigationhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/HowToUseWordForMac2016/Word_Navigation-420-90.jpg If you're the kind of writer who formats larger documents into sections — and really, who doesn't? — the new Navigation pane will come in ridiculously handy. This feature can be summoned from the View > Sidebar > Navigation menu, which will then display a list of sections to the left of the actual document. Click one, and you'll jump straight to that particular section, no mouse or trackpad scrolling required. But don't close the Navigation pane just yet: Word 2016 will highlight whatever section you're currently working on as the document is being edited, which is quite convenient for jumping around to copy and paste between sections, for example. OneDrive: Baked right inhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/HowToUseWordForMac2016/Word_OneDrive-420-90.jpg Earlier versions of Word for Mac have never been particularly great about integrating with Microsoft's cloud storage service OneDrive — at least not in the more natural Windows users have been able to do. Word 2016 finally rights this wrong, with the ability to open and save files directly from local storage as well as personal or business OneDrive accounts. Add one or more OneDrive (or SharePoint, for business users) accounts, and they will be instantly available on all of the Office 365 applications on your Mac from the swanky new Open dialog box, which mimics the UI first introduced on Microsoft's iPad edition. Best of all, this works even if you choose not to install the official OneDrive for Mac client. I like your style(s)http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/HowToUseWordForMac2016/Word_Styles-420-90.jpg Word has long offered a quick way to change formatting in a single click by applying various styles that affect typeface, color, and other options, but it's never been particularly easy to create your own or modify existing styles. A click on the Home Ribbon has changed all that: There's quicker access via the Styles Pane, while a click on the "Show style guides" option shows users at a glance which style is currently in use for the open document. The new Style Themes feature under the Design Ribbon is also available to change the document content for a more consistent look and feel. One-click document sharinghttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/HowToUseWordForMac2016/Word_sharing-420-90.jpg Whether you want to collaborate with another Office user across town or around the globe, attach a document to an outgoing email, or create a public link anyone can use to access your file, Word 2016 is here to oblige with a better way to share. Simply click on the icon in the upper right corner — the one with the little person next to the plus symbol — and you'll be transported into a trio of options for inviting people, copying a link, or the coveted "Email as Attachment" feature. In all three cases, document permissions will be updated to allow the recipient(s) to edit the file, and naturally you'll need to store it in the cloud in order for them to gain access — but Microsoft makes that as easy as a second click of the mouse. Help improve Word 2016http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/HowToUseWordForMac2016/Word_suggestions-420-90.jpg After years of being viewed as an evil software empire, Microsoft has made great strides to open itself up to criticism and work harder to improve the products being released. This newfound openness extends to the Office 2016 for Mac applications themselves, because users of Word can now click the little smiley-face button in the upper right corner to send the folks in Redmond an encouraging word or complain about something that's driving you nuts. Hey, Microsoft extended the olive branch...now it's your turn to grab it and help make the software even better. http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238385101685/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4985fd17/sc/28/rc/1/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238385101685/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4985fd17/sc/28/rc/2/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238385101685/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4985fd17/sc/28/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/238385101685/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4985fd17/sc/28/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/238385101685/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4985fd17/sc/28/a2t.imghttp://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/4985fd17/sc/28/mf.gifhttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/MtLp9SYeE2Y
  17. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/mobile_phones/Windows%20Phone/Windows%20Phone%208/Cortana/Cortana-470-75.jpgAll the goodness of Microsoft Translator is being added to the Cortana app inside Windows 10, which means you'll soon be able to ask Microsoft's digital assistant for instant translations. Just load up the OS on a tablet or laptop and you're good for your tour of Europe (just watch those data charges). Native translation support is now available in the US and China and we're hoping it expands internationally soon. Cortana itself hasn't yet been switched on in the UK yet for Windows 10 users but there seems no reason why Microsoft would want to hold it back much longer. 38 different languages are supported, including English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, simplified Chinese and Japanese. Some less well-known ones make the cut too, such as Finnish and Slovenian. Language barriersTo use Cortana's new interpretation skills, shout the "hey Cortana" shortcut at your computer. You can then use the phrases "translate..." or "how to say..." as you prefer. As with any other Cortana query, you can opt to type it into the taskbar search box if you don't like raising your voice in the living room or office. Via the Open Translator button to the side you can edit the translation, hear it through a text-to-speech engine, or share it with a friend (if you must) - and this shortcut takes you to the Microsoft Translator page on Bing. Considering Microsoft Translator is already well established as part of Bing, it's a surprise it's taken so long to make the jump to Cortana. Microsoft also recently added the same functionality to its Skype app, though if you have serious business to conduct we'd suggest that learning the lingo is still the best way of making yourself understood. Android Wear can now translate almost any conversation http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238385077838/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/498263e8/sc/15/rc/1/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238385077838/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/498263e8/sc/15/rc/2/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238385077838/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/498263e8/sc/15/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/238385077838/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/498263e8/sc/15/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/238385077838/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/498263e8/sc/15/a2t.imghttp://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/498263e8/sc/15/mf.gifhttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/VmRRSmKMwnA
  18. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/Connected%20home/Google%20Nest/new%20Nest%20thermostat-470-75.jpgGoogle has released a new version of its Nest thermostat, and while the changes aren't all that dramatic, it makes the smart home device a more compelling buy than ever. The overall size is the same but the screen is now 40% bigger and packs in 25% more pixels - handy when you're trying to squint at the temperature reading from the other side of the room. And speaking of long-distance viewing, there's a new Farsight feature that lights up the display when you walk in the room, just in case you were wondering exactly what the current setting was. Heads up for your heatingAlso new is a Furnace Heads-Up feature designed to alert users when abnormalities are detected with heating patterns. It's essentially a diagnostic test for your heating system and it's going to roll out to the first and second generation Nests as well. In the US the new Nest sticks to the same $249 price (around £163, AU$356), with the second-generation model dropping to $200 (around £131, AU$286) if you don't mind a smaller screen. International availability and pricing has yet to be announced but shouldn't take long. Google is also promising that the new Nest is even smarter at learning from your heating habits and can set up a personalised schedule in just a couple of days. As always, everything can be controlled via smartphone too. What you need to consider when designing your smart home
  19. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/software/Windows/Make%20windows%20better/windows%2010%20fixes-470-75.jpgIntroductionhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Windows/Make%20windows%20better/windows%2010%20fixes-420-90.jpg So what does Microsoft need to do in order to make Windows 10 a better product? That's the question we're pondering in this feature, and we've come up with 10 ways in which Redmond could improve its new operating system. For starters, Microsoft can bring all those promised missing features to the new Edge web browser in short order. We'd also like to see the company tighten up the new Start menu, and indeed Windows Update for that matter. Read on for our full wish-list… For another perspective, check out: 20 smart new and improved features in Windows 10Bring Edge up to scratchhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Windows/Make%20windows%20better/edge%20updates-420-90.jpg The new Edge browser in Windows 10 is fast and has a rendering engine that copes with sites written for Chrome and PC that often don't work in Internet Explorer. But it's lacking a lot of features as a browser – it doesn't sync favourites or open tabs to other devices, it doesn't yet have extensions and you can't drag files into web pages to upload them. Those capabilities are all expected for future updates, but another missing feature hasn't yet been confirmed. Because the Edge browser is a universal app (for security as well as ease of updating), you can pin the Edge app to the taskbar but not any secondary windows. And that means you can't pin specific sites to the taskbar and there isn't an easy way for Microsoft to add that option, even though it's a popular request. OneDrive placeholders and browsinghttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Windows/Make%20windows%20better/onedrive-420-90.jpg Windows 10 drops the Windows 8.1 deep OneDrive integration, where you could use File Explorer to navigate your whole OneDrive even if you didn't have enough disk space to sync it all to your PC, using placeholders to show you the files you weren't syncing – even when you weren't online. Like Windows 7, Windows 10 only shows you the files and folders you've chosen to sync. So if you have thousands of photos or audio tracks in the cloud that don't fit on your computer, you can only look at them in the browser. And if you want to add a document to a folder you're not syncing, you can't do that straight from the application where you create the document. Microsoft can't just bring back placeholders the way they were because they use too much space on small tablets, and it hasn't yet given any details of the promised replacement. You can get some of the placeholder features back with Odrive, but that doesn't give you image thumbnails so it's not a complete replacement. Better ways to arrange windowshttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Windows/Make%20windows%20better/tablet%20mode-420-90.jpg You can use virtual desktops to arrange specific applications together, but Windows 10 doesn't remember the position or size of different windows very well – every time you restart to apply an update, you have to restart your apps by hand (Windows 8.1 would restart Explorer and other apps for you) and then resize all your apps and windows. It would save a lot of time to be able to save specific sizes, positions and arrangements of windows. It would also be useful to be able to snap something beyond two horizontal windows or four in a grid; how about three vertical windows? Or how about being able to resize two windows at once, so you make one bigger and one smaller at the same time, even when you're not in tablet mode? Smarter Start menuhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Windows/Make%20windows%20better/indent%20start-420-90.jpg Happy to have the Start menu rather than the Windows 8.1 Start screen? Make sure you don't add more than 512 entries or you won't see all your Start menu items. Not only would we like Microsoft to fix this bug, but we'd like far more options for choosing how the All Apps menu works. No matter how big you make the Start menu, the list of installed apps stays in a narrow column, with program groups collapsed, and with only a tiny icon to show that PowerPoint is hiding in the Microsoft Office group. Take a hint from the many Start screen replacements that offer far more customisation and give people more ways to organise apps. Bring back Store featureshttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Windows/Make%20windows%20better/no%20remote%20apps-420-90.jpg Now that the Windows and Windows Phone Stores have been fully unified, it's time for more of the Store features to come back – especially on the web. For a start, we'd like the Store to be far more reliable – it's the app most likely to have connectivity problems, and there have been numerous bugs where app updates don't download automatically. But we also miss the ability to send apps to another device; you used to be able to browse the Windows Phone Store on the web and send apps to your phone automatically. Now if you see an interesting phone app when you're on your PC, you have to remember to pick up your phone and look for it. Given how common mobile web browsing is, being able to send apps to your PC from your phone would get a lot more Windows Store apps installed – and that's what Microsoft needs to get developers interested. Put everything in Windows Update http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Windows/Make%20windows%20better/two%20updates-420-90.jpg Windows as a Service means that more people use Windows Update; on Windows 10 Home you don't get the option. We'd like to see Microsoft push OEMs like Dell, HP, Samsung and Lenovo to put all their essential drivers and updates in Windows Update so users don't have to run two update tools. Even if you buy a PC from the Microsoft Store with the Signature version of Windows that doesn't include crapware, you're going to have to use the vendor update process to get driver and firmware updates that Microsoft's own Surface PCs get from Windows Update. That would also make it less likely that PC makers will try to disable Windows Update the way Samsung did, or push updates that sneakily install software you haven't asked for the way Lenovo has done, or that cause security problems (again, we're looking at you, Lenovo). Fix audio management http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Windows/Make%20windows%20better/volume-420-90.jpg Right-click on the volume icon in the taskbar and you can open the Volume Mixer to set the volume for different desktop apps, or mute them altogether – but it doesn't control the volume for Store apps, which means it doesn't control Edge but it does control IE. Edge will show you which tab is playing audio with an icon you can use to mute it. Why can't Microsoft put it all together and give us volume controls and mute buttons for every tab and every app and program on the system? One Windows interfacehttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Windows/Make%20windows%20better/settings%20and%20control-420-90.jpg Microsoft has said that eventually, the Settings app will have all the settings and controls from Control Panel, though we don't know how long it will be before you stop jumping between the two of them. We'd like to see all the Windows interface pieces get the same makeover so they look like they belong in the same operating system. At the moment, the menu you see when you right-click on the taskbar looks very different from the menus you see when you right-click icons in the taskbar, which look different from the context menus for items in the system tray… There are lots of places where there are out of date interface styles in Windows. Notification history and synchttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Windows/Make%20windows%20better/notificication-420-90.jpg The new Action Center in Windows 10 shows you alerts from a mix of system tools and installed apps – including Outlook 2013 as well as Store apps. But you can't collapse a group of notifications, you can only delete them – and when they're gone, they're gone for good. If it's useful to put all your notifications in the same place, a history of old notifications all in one place would be just as useful. And when you have multiple devices – whether that's a desktop and a tablet or a notebook and a Windows smartphone, wouldn't it be much more useful if dismissing the alerts from Twitter on your phone cleared them on your PC as well? A visible backlog http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Windows/Make%20windows%20better/feedback-420-90.jpg Microsoft is giving users much less detail about what bugs have been fixed in Windows, unless they're security problems where you can still dig into the details. Unless you plan to pick and choose updates – something Microsoft isn't encouraging – it's not necessarily useful to know what's fixed in enormous detail, although it's nice to know when a problem you've had is supposed to be fixed, in case it still doesn't work. But we also have no idea what's coming or when, unless it's a web standard that the Edge browser could use – in which case you can see exactly what Microsoft is going to implement and how high a priority that has. The Uservoice site for Edge web developers has over a dozen items marked as in development, whereas the Uservoice site for Edge users has only two suggestions with an official status and one of them is no. The Insider Hub tells you how much feedback you've submitted, but not whether Microsoft is working on any of it. The Windows team has a list of items they're working on for Windows. Some of them have to stay as surprises for competitive reasons, but when they're bug fixes and requested features, people would be much happier to apply all those updates if they knew something they wanted was on the way. http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238384996844/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/496ec008/sc/15/rc/1/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238384996844/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/496ec008/sc/15/rc/2/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238384996844/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/496ec008/sc/15/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/238384996844/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/496ec008/sc/15/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/238384996844/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/496ec008/sc/15/a2t.imghttp://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/496ec008/sc/15/mf.gifhttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/8aAMr0fi0DI
  20. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/Features%202/movieweek/lead%20images/James%20Bond%20cars-470-75.jpgThe cars of James Bondhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Cinema/Cars%20of%20James%20Bond/James-Bond-Cars-420-90.jpg In the real world, secret agents and spies draw as little attention to themselves as possible. Drab clothes, dreary locations, and unremarkable cars. The aim is to be entirely forgettable. Fortunately, fiction leaves more room for the exotic, which is why James Bond (the world's greatest secret agent, in case you hadn't heard) can drive cars that turn every head on the street, making it impossible to maintain a low profile. From the classic Aston Martin DB5, to a dalliance with BMW in the '90s, and the infamous invisible car of 2002's Die Another Day, James Bond's ride is never dull. Aston Martin DB5http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Cinema/Cars%20of%20James%20Bond/James-Bond-cars-420-90.jpg The Aston Martin DB5 first appeared in Goldfinger (1964), and while Bond's had many cars since, that original silver dream machine has never been bettered. Appearing in six Bond movies over the years (Goldfinger, Thunderball, GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies, Casino Royale and Skyfall), the DB5 has also had its share of Q-approved upgrades. The Goldfinger incarnation came packing gun barrels behind the front indicators, a bullet shield behind the rear window and a 3-way revolving front number plate. Pierce Brosnan's Bond enjoyed more subtle upgrades in Goldeneye, with a teleprinter disguised as a CD player, and a champagne cooler (for drink driving convenience). The Goldfinger DB5 was sold in 2010 for US$4.6m. Money well spent. Toyota 2000GThttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Cinema/Cars%20of%20James%20Bond/Toyota-2000GT-420-90.jpg With You Only Live Twice set primarily in Japan it was only natural that at some point Bond would find himself in Japan's first supercar, the Toyota 2000GT. Belonging to Japanese S.I.S. agent Aki, only 351 of the Toyota 2000GT were ever produced, and the film's car was unique due to its open top – the regular car's hard top was too restrictive for the 189 cm Sean Connery to fit comfortably, so Toyota customised two cars for the film. Lotus Esprit S1http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Cinema/Cars%20of%20James%20Bond/Lotus-Esprit-S1-420-90.jpg On the road, Bond's ride from The Spy Who Loved Me may not look like much – especially when compared with that glorious DB5 – but this little white number comes with a big surprise. Having taken a dive off the end of a pier, you'd think the S1 would at the very least need a session with an industrial blowdryer. Instead, its wheels folded away, transforming the S1 into a sleek submarine. And the underwater incarnation of the S1 wasn't a model. It was a completely functional submarine build into the shell of one of Lotus' cars. Aston Martin V8 Vantagehttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Cinema/Cars%20of%20James%20Bond/Aston-Martin-V8-Vantage-420-90.jpg After an 18-year break, The Living Daylights saw Bond return to the brand in which he belongs – the Aston Martin. One of Bond's more gadget-packed cars, the Vantage was equipped with spike-producing tires, missiles, and a self-destruct function. The car also featured outrigger skis, wheel-mounted lasers and a rocket booster. Bond clearly likes a bit of variety, and the Vantage indulges him by switching from a convertible to winterised hardtop later in the film. Ford Mustang Mach 1http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Cinema/Cars%20of%20James%20Bond/Ford-Mustang-Mach-1-420-90.jpg While Bond was not actually the owner of the Ford Mustang Mach 1 – that particular privilege fell to smuggler Tiffany Case – he certainly put it through its paces while behind the wheel in Diamonds Are Forever. 007's had his fair share of near misses and miraculous escapes throughout the years, but perhaps his greatest achievement as a driver comes when he balances the Mach 1 on the car's two right wheels in order to fit down a narrow alley. What's remarkable about this particular piece of wheel work is that when exiting the alley on the other side, Bond's managed to switch the Mach 1 to balance on its left side. That's some skill. AMC Hornethttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Cinema/Cars%20of%20James%20Bond/AMC-Hornet-420-90.jpg Perhaps second only to his miraculous feat in the Mustang Mach 1 is Bond's stunt while driving the AMC Hornet in The Man with the Golden Gun. Desperately in need of a car to pursue a fellow M16 agent's kidnapper, Bond steals the Hornet from a nearby dealership – we suppose he has a licence for that, too – and then engages in a long chase that finds him on the wrong side of a river with a broken bridge. Naturally, an obstacle like this is no match for 007, and he soon performs the 360-degree barrel roll jump that was the film's landmark stunt. A customised version of the Hornet was used for the stunt, with a lower stance and larger wheel wells helping Bond (well, a stuntman) land the jump perfectly. BMW Z8http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Cinema/Cars%20of%20James%20Bond/BMW-Z8-420-90.jpg Arguably the best-looking car from Bond's BMW period, the Z8 armed Pierce Brosnan with a seamless blend of '60s styling and '90s gadgetry. While not overloaded with tech, 007 was able to control the car remotely. And an attacking helicopter came to a fiery demise thanks to the vehicle's surface-to-air missiles. Sadly, the car was finished when a second helicopter arrived and used hanging circular saws to cut it in half. An end made all the more tragic by the fact that BMW only produced 5,703 of the Z8. Aston Martin DBShttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Cinema/Cars%20of%20James%20Bond/Aston%20Martin%20DBS-420-90.jpg A new Bond calls for a new Aston Martin, and Casino Royale's DBS must have been a very pleasant welcome gift for Daniel Craig. While not boasting much in the way of gadgets, the immaculate styling we've come to expect from Aston Martin made it all the more difficult to watch as *spoilers* the car was totalled towards the film's climax. The stunt actually broke the world record for the highest number of rolls in a car – the previous record was had been held by a Top Gear stuntman – turning seven times before coming to rest. The car wouldn't flip by itself, so a compressed air cannon had to fire a cylinder into the road to achieve the desired result. techradar's Movie Week is our celebration of the art of cinema, and the technology that makes it all possible. http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238384901206/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/49686798/sc/28/rc/1/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238384901206/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/49686798/sc/28/rc/2/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238384901206/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/49686798/sc/28/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/238384901206/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/49686798/sc/28/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/238384901206/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/49686798/sc/28/a2t.imghttp://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/49686798/sc/28/mf.gifhttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/1SG0jQfZNg8
  21. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/Features%202/movieweek/lead%20images/James%20Bond%20cars-470-75.jpgThe cars of James Bondhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Cinema/Cars%20of%20James%20Bond/James-Bond-Cars-420-90.jpg In the real world, secret agents and spies draw as little attention to themselves as possible.
  22. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/events/Microsoft%20Build%202015/press%20photos/Microsoft%20Edge%20Build%20press%20photo-470-75.jpgIntroductionhttp://cdn.mos.techradar.com//art/events/Microsoft%20Build%202015/press%20photos/Microsoft%20Edge%20Build%20press%20photo-420-100.jpg Microsoft's follow-up to Internet Explorer, uninspiringly called Edge, needs to up the ante against its rivals, Firefox and Chrome, in order to stem the gradual erosion of Redmond's browser market share. This is no easy task, though – Microsoft needs to cope with the tens of millions of legacy users who are still very much accustomed to the quirks and peculiarities of Internet Explorer, the millions of businesses that rely on IE, and a growing audience of web users who want a faster, simpler and safer, more modern version of IE. At any rate, we put our thinking caps on, and came up with 10 ways that Microsoft can enhance the new browser it unleashed with Windows 10. Hands on: Microsoft Edge reviewMake it stop crashing randomlyhttp://cdn.mos.techradar.com//art/TRBC/Miscellaneous/Edge%20browser%20extensions%20feature/pinterest%20extension-420-100.jpg The first improvement Microsoft can make is an easy one – just make sure the browser works as planned and doesn't have a life of its own. Even on the latest build (10525), Edge's erratic behaviour is likely to burn those who are enticed by promises of a faster, more user-friendly browsing experience. For now, Microsoft needs to make sure that it has got the fundamentals right. Where's the recovery mode?http://cdn2.mos.techradar.futurecdn.net//art/events/Microsoft%20Build%202015/build2015-050-420-100.jpg What makes the random crashing syndrome harder to swallow is the fact that you lose all previously browsed tabs when you restart your browser again. Chrome users are probably aware that Google's browser automatically recovers your sessions after a crash and offers a very useful option to re-open tabs that you might have accidentally closed. Such an option would certainly help bridge the feature gap between Chrome and Edge. Note that you can set Edge to open previous pages if you shut it down but this is not a widely known option, and is not selected by default in the setup menu. You can also use Ctrl+Shift+T to open the most recent closed tabs. Make shortcuts clearerhttp://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/events/Microsoft%20Build%202015/screen%20grabs/edge-view-420-100.jpg Can you use shortcuts on Edge? Yes, you can, but this fact isn't as clearly indicated as it is with rival browsers. As expected, the 30 or so shortcuts available on Edge come directly from its predecessor, Internet Explorer, but they are not documented anywhere in the browser. So you're left to essentially trust your memory or try your luck. Sadly, a couple of them are not working, as well, but don't despair as we've compiled a full list of shortcuts for Edge here. No help?http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Google/chrome/Chrome%20help-420-90.jpg What to do if you want to get help from Microsoft Edge? Usually, F1 works on any browser (such as Chrome, as pictured above) but not on this one. There's nothing in the drop-down menu either, or in the About Us section. In the brand new world of Microsoft, everything is done online, and your search engine will remain your best friend. Still, it is slightly preposterous to assume that the billion-plus users of Edge will know how to navigate this new and different browser. Auto-translatehttp://cdn4.mos.techradar.futurecdn.net//art/TRBC/Miscellaneous/Edge%20browser%20extensions%20feature/translation%20extension-420-100.jpg Chrome led the way with a seamless auto-translation feature that can be toggled from the URL bar/Omnibox at any time. That made Google's browser attractive for whoever wants to access content in other languages. The alternative route for Edge is to go to a translation website, then copy/paste the URL or the content into the appropriate box and click the "translate" button, a process that wouldn't be out of place in the 1990s. Full-screenhttp://cdn3.mos.techradar.futurecdn.net//art/events/Microsoft%20Build%202015/build2015-053-420-100.jpg Somehow, somebody at Redmond saw fit to remove the ability to use Edge in full-screen mode. F11 was the default key to toggle that mode but it doesn't do anything as it stands. Like many of Edge's nagging issues, this one also stems from the fact that Edge seems to be a modern app at heart, one that's geared towards a touch UI rather than a more traditional desktop-based environment. But then again, IE 11, Chrome and all other major browsers do offer a full-screen mode (oh and also note that the key combo, Alt+Shift+Enter, doesn't work). Better support for drag and drophttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Google/chrome/Chrome%20drag-and-drop-420-90.jpg It is surprising that you cannot drag and drop into or out of Edge; be it files, URLs or images. You can, for example, lift an audio file from your desktop and drop it into OneDrive or Gmail (either in the body or as an attachment, as pictured above) on Chrome so there's no conceivable reason why Microsoft's browser couldn't do the same. Microsoft is working on it though and said earlier in August that: "Fixes for this issue are being treated with top priority and are in development to ship in a future update. We'll provide updates on the timeline as we know more." Note that you cannot copy the URL of a picture as well for some odd reason. Multiple instances of Edgehttp://cdn2.mos.techradar.futurecdn.net//art/events/Microsoft%20Build%202015/build2015-051-420-100.jpg You cannot open multiple instances of Edge. This is different from opening several browsing tabs, of course, as they stem from the same original process. Multiple instances mean that one browser crash would not affect other browsers running and that would also allow you to run browsers in different virtual desktops (known in Windows 10 as Task View). Currently, Edge will default to the desktop on which it is running when you try to run it on any virtual desktop. The same applies to any Office Mobile application (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) as well as a bunch of others (Outlook Mail and Outlook Calendar). Docking tabs verticallyhttp://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/Features%202/computing%20how%20tos/mac-mini-and-monitor-420-100.JPG The average screen resolution as well as the aspect ratio of monitors have changed over the last decade. The bulk of screens sold with desktop PCs now come with a full HD resolution and a screen diagonal of at least 20-inches (and indeed there are some huge monitors out there, like the Samsung UD970, the 31.5-inch model pictured above). Most websites cater for the lowest common denominator user, those with a low horizontal resolution (TechRadar for example is less than 1000 pixels wide to fit comfortably on a 1024 pixel wide screen), which means that space on the side, on the browser's edge, could be used more smartly, perhaps to accommodate vertically stacked tabs (rather than horizontally as is usually the case). Where are the extensions?http://cdn1.mos.techradar.futurecdn.net//art/TRBC/Miscellaneous/Edge%20browser%20extensions%20feature/reddit%20extension-420-100.jpg Perhaps the biggest flaw that Edge suffers compared to its two main competitors, Chrome and Firefox, is the lack of any extensions. While these usually add to the bloat in any browser (we're looking at you Chrome), they are an essential part of the process of making a browser as individual as its user. Like apps on mobile devices, extensions often reduce levels of defection to competitors, as their users find it difficult to move away from them. Microsoft has yet to dismiss the idea of plugins, and it wouldn't surprise us if the company starts to actively encourage developers to port extensions from rivals to Edge, in much the same way it is courting Android and iOS app developers. http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238384908059/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4964c562/sc/15/rc/1/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238384908059/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4964c562/sc/15/rc/2/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/238384908059/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4964c562/sc/15/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/238384908059/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4964c562/sc/15/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/238384908059/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4964c562/sc/15/a2t.imghttp://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/4964c562/sc/15/mf.gifhttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/Ai40rZuEx3g
  23. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/magazines/Computing%20Bookazines/Android%20Guide%2034/CBN34.movie.rockplayer-470-75.jpgMovie playback is one area where Google hasn't really done much on Android. Its standard video player is still a defiantly dull grey and lifeless experience. The software maker clearly much keener on pushing its online sales and rental channels on Google Play, rather than encouraging users to fill their mobiles with their own movie files. Best Android phone - which should you buy? That said, a decent Android model - and even older phones such as Samsung's excellent Galaxy SII - have more than enough power to run today's HD video content. Although manufacturer politics can play a part in unfairly restricting video playback. Some mobiles only officially allow their users to play MP4 files, for example, as if they somehow convey more legitimate forms of media than the other movie formats available. Plus, when it comes to video playback, the dreaded (and often overstated) Android fragmentation situation really is a big issue. But it's a hardware problem in the most part. The huge variety in Android chip suppliers out there, from old handsets with single-core ARMv6 chips up to 2012's quad-core monsters, means that some phones won't work very well as media players no matter what app you use. Put simply, if your phone is still an HTC Wildfire, none of the apps here will get HD MKV files running smoothly on your phone. But, if you do have something relatively modern with a fast processor, the following media apps ought to spice up Google's rather boring movie playback options, and at least widen your options when it comes to video viewing. Our academy has seen them all. And the nominees for best app are… 1. Movies By Flixsterhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/your_mobile_life/top10mplayers/flixter-420-90.jpg Pitching itself as a complete package for moviegoers, Flixster lets you stream and download films, build a cloud-based library of purchased titles, check out reviews on its Rotten Tomatoes site, and find cinema listings for those times when a pocket-sized picture just isn't enough. Ad-heavy, but free and Facebook-friendly. Download from Google Play2. MX Playerhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/your_mobile_life/top10mplayers/mxplayer-420-90.jpg Taking almost any file format in its stride (and offering plugins for the rest), this is the perfect player for movie libraries amassed from a range of sources. Its also a great one to leave with the kids, as its child-lock keeps them out of your inbox and current account. Claims to "play everything" on its Google Play artwork, and with over 10,000,000 downloads, it's the most popular option out there. MX Player's big selling point is hardware support that's augmented by multi-core decoding, so if you're running a modern dual-core processor, you ought to see a significant performance boost. Download from Google Play3.Google Play Movies & TVhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/your_mobile_life/top10mplayers/googleplay-420-90.jpg With Google making a pretty penny flogging third-party players through its Google Play store, they'd be forgiven for downplaying their own free app – but this a typically slick offering access to thousands of titles to rent or buy, all available for instant streaming or downloading to watch offline. Download from Google Play4. MoboPlayerhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/your_mobile_life/top10mplayers/moboplayer-420-90.jpg Much like MX Player, this is an all-purpose movie player designed to decode so many file formats it's tempting to start making them up (kiss my .ass file, Mobo! Wait, it can actually do that one). Offering support for subtitles, playlists and pop-out windows, this Mobo deserves its own award A comprehensive list of supported codecs makes MoboPlayer a good choice, although being entirely software based means you'll need something with some serious processor power to watch anything approaching HD resolution. Still, for getting subtitled MKVs and more exotic movie file types running on Android models that don't officially support them, it's a decent, simple and free choice. Download from Google Play5.Cracklehttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/your_mobile_life/top10mplayers/crackle-420-90.jpg Free to download and free to watch, this Flash streaming app intercuts playback with ads for an old-school, ITV feel. Movies are mostly drawn from Sony's back catalogue, so you won't find all the latest releases here (Cops And Robbersons, anyone?), but did we mention it's completely free? Download from Google Play6.VPlayerhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/your_mobile_life/top10mplayers/vplayer-420-90.jpg Yours for under a fiver after a week's free trial, VPlayer promises to get the best out of your handset with a choice of hardware or software decoding. Smooth HD playback proves no problem on a dual core device, and it boasts less battery drain than its rivals to boot. Download from Google Play7.BigFlixhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/your_mobile_life/top10mplayers/bigflix-420-90.jpg If your tastes lean closer to Bollywood than Hollywood, you could do a lot worse than check out this free repository of Hindi, Tamil and Bengali blockbusters, offering unlimited monthly streaming for a flat fee. If your tastes lean more towards Dollywood, there's nothing we can do to help you. Sorry. Download from Google Play8.Crunchyrollhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/your_mobile_life/top10mplayers/crunchyroll-420-90.jpg Mmm… Crunchyroll. Another specialist player, this time packed full of the latest Japanese Anime, Crunchyroll offers most download content for free after its first week of release, and ad-free streaming with a paid membership. English subtitles are favoured over dubbing for a fully authentic experience, and the interface is in English, too. Download from Google Play9.VLC for Android Betahttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/your_mobile_life/top10mplayers/vlc-420-90.jpg A much-loved (if occasionally moody) open-source player, VLC has yet to perfect its Android offering. Warning that it's liable to "kill your kitten, destroy your house and start the Mayan apocalypse", this beta version is still worth a look, handling most media files and network streams with something approaching aplomb. However, it's free, plays most media types through a home network, lets you adjust aspect ratios, and much more. It'll be great, when it's really finished. Download from Google Play10.Netflixhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/your_mobile_life/top10mplayers/netflix-420-90.jpg Love film? Then you need… Netflix, obviously. A monthly sub gives you access to thousands of films via your phone, tablet, console or Smart TV, with the ability to start watching on one device, then pick up where you left off on another. A tempting free trial offers full access for one month. 24. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/Cinema/Best%20movie%20vehicles/Millennium-Falcon-470-75.jpgThe best movie vehicles of all timehttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Cinema/Best%20movie%20vehicles/Millennium-Falcon-420-90.jpg Where would Han Solo have been without the Millennium Falcon? Would Mad Max have survived the wasteland if not for his Interceptor? And what kind of adventure would Marty McFly have had sans the DeLorean DMC-12? Without their vehicles of choice, cinema's greatest heroes would have amounted to a whole lot of nothing. So here's techradar's tribute to the greatest rides of the silver screen. From interstellar spaceships to roaring muscle cars, these are the vehicles that have made grown men weep and small children dream. Punch it! Millennium Falcon (Star Wars)http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Cinema/Best%20movie%20vehicles/Millennium-Falcon-2-420-90.jpg "What a piece of junk!" She may not look like much, but the Millennium Falcon most certainly has it where it counts. Smuggling vessel for the notorious Han Solo (contender for the title of cinema's coolest space pirate) and his loveable sidekick Chewbacca (contender for the title of cinema's coolest space carpet), the Millennium Falcon's an unreliable ride, constantly breaking down and requiring repairs, but she comes through for our heroes when they need her most. Capable of making the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs – we can only assume that's a boast-worthy achievement – the Falcon's jump to lightspeed has to be one of the coolest images in all of science fiction. And we've no doubt it's inspired a generation of scientists to toil away at figuring out how to make the stars elongate into bars of light before launching across space. V8 Interceptor (Mad Max)http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Cinema/Best%20movie%20vehicles/Mad-Max-Interceptor-420-90.jpg The wasteland is a world of fire and blood, where life is cheap, and you can either move for die. Fortunately Max Rockatansky has his trusty V8 Interceptor to escape the murderous gangs, or to pop up to the shops for milk. Based on a 1973 Ford Falcon XB GT coupe, the Interceptor is a heavily-customised road machine. By the time it appeared in the second Mad Max film, The Road Warrior, large fuel tanks had been installed on its rear and anyone trying to steal its fuel would find themselves on the explode-y end of a booby trap. Max's ride also packs a supercharger, though he's forced to limit its use to times when he really needs it – if you think fuel's expensive now, just wait until the apocalypse. Light Cycle (Tron)http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Cinema/Best%20movie%20vehicles/Tron-Light-Cycle-420-90.jpg The Light Cycle debuted in the original Tron way back in '82. But if we're honest, the bike that really gets our engines running is the incredibly sleek 5th-generation that appeared in 2010's Tron: Legacy. While it looks like the designer took some cues from the Batman Forever Batmobile – particularly where the blue light detailing is concerned – the Light Cycle proved so popular that a number were designed and sold to the general public with prices of up to $77,000. Powered by liquid energy, Tron's cycles produce light ribbons that form the basis of racing tournaments – like dangerous games of Snake. These light ribbons create a wall in the bike's wake, and if riders hit one of these walls they're out of the game – a fate we'd be more than willing to risk if it meant adding a Light Cycle to the techradar garage. Optimus Prime (Transformers)http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Cinema/Best%20movie%20vehicles/Optimus-Prime-420-90.jpg There's conflict within the techradar office over which Optimus Prime should be included here. Do we choose the Prime from the 1986 animated film (arguably the best of his cinematic outings), or the more recent live action incarnation? We'll settle for the latter, and while we understand readers will have reservations, whatever you think of Michael Bay's interpretation of the Robots in Disguise, there's no denying that driving around in his version of the Autobot leader would be impossibly cool. With a flame paint job that'll make you proud to embrace your inner redneck, everything about this Optimus Prime screams "Look at how badass I am!" Plus, having a truck that transforms into an enormous robot warrior in the face of any road rage is a highly appealing bonus. DeLorean DMC-12 (Back to the Future)http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Cinema/Best%20movie%20vehicles/DeLorean-420-90.jpg We'd trade a Maybach Exelero (worth $8 million) for the chance to get behind the wheel of Marty McFly's beat up DeLorean. A plutonium-powered time machine, Back to the Future's four-wheeled star was built by Doc Brown after slipping on his toilet while hanging a clock in 1955. When he came to he had a vision of the time machine's core component – the flux capacitor – but it would take him 30 years to finally complete it. Capable of zipping into the past if it reaches 88 mph (142 km/h), the DeLorean is responsible for parading the awesomeness of gullwing doors throughout history. When asked why he used a DeLorean as the core for his time machine, the good doctor replied: "If you're gonna build a time machine into a car, why not do it with some style?" Helicarrier (The Avengers)http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Cinema/Best%20movie%20vehicles/Helicarrier-420-90.jpg If you're going to coordinate the world's most powerful team of superheroes, you might as well do it from the most awesome military vehicle ever conceived, right? A cross between a helicopter and an aircraft carrier – no originality points for whoever named it – the helicarrier is Nick Fury's home away from home. While a fleet of three more heavily-armed 'carriers made an appearance in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, they didn't last long. Cap didn't like the implications of a fleet of flying super weapons with long-range precision guns capable of monitoring the whole planet. It's hard to argue with him. '68 Ford Mustang GT (Bullitt)http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Cinema/Best%20movie%20vehicles/Bullitt-Mustang-420-90.jpg Time for something a little more grounded, but no less awesome. Steve McQueen's Mustang is the most iconic muscle car in history. And its duel with a pursuing 1968 Dodge Charger R/T is one of cinema's best car chases – one that ends rather painfully for some incinerated hitmen. Two 325hp Mustangs with four-speed manual transmissions were used in the shooting of the sequence. Both featured engines, brakes and suspension heavily modified by the veteran car racer Max Balchowsky, and the cars reached speeds of up to 180 km/h (110 mph) during shooting. The sequence inspired decades of Mustang sales, and in 2008 Ford built the Mustang Bullitt to mark the 40th anniversary of the film. Ecto-1 (Ghostbusters)http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Cinema/Best%20movie%20vehicles/Ghostbusters-Ecto1-420-90.jpg Who you gonna call? As essential a part of the Ghostbusters' arsenal as their proton packs, the Ecto-1 is how Venkman, Stantz, Spengler, and Zeddemore get to the scene of the latest ghostly goings on. Based on a 1959 Cadillac that was used as both an ambulance and a hearse, the Ecto-1 is a fitting ride for our favourite team of spectre stalkers, with enough room to carry the whole crew, their proton packs, and the stomp-activated traps they use to store busted ghosts. The Batmobile (Batman)http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Cinema/Best%20movie%20vehicles/Batmobile-420-90.jpg Yes, we've already done a feature on the evolution of the Batmobile, but it's still more than deserving of a place on this list. No matter which incarnation you prefer (sleek limousine, heavily-armoured tank), the 'mobile is undoubtedly one of best movie vehicles of all time, if not the best period. With a jet engine at its rear, flanked by a pair of bat wings, and that none more black paint job, it's an intimidating ride. Crammed from tip to afterburner with an incredible arsenal of gadgets – each more improbable than the last – the Batmobile is the ultimate tech-lover's set of wheels. Aston Martin DB5 (Goldfinger)http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Cinema/Best%20movie%20vehicles/Aston-Martin-DB5-420-90.jpg James Bond has always had a taste for the finer things in life, and that applies as much to cars as it does alcohol, women, and cheesy one-liners. The Aston Martin DB5 has appeared in six Bond films, from its first appearance in Goldfinger to *spoilers* an unfortunate end in the most recent, Skyfall. Earlier incarnations feature some typically out-there tech. The Goldfinger incarnation includes guns mounted behind the front indicators, a bullet shield protecting the rear window, and three-way revolving number plates, while the Goldeneye DB5 has a teleprinter that's disguised as a CD player, and a champagne cooler for Bond's last-minute romantic entanglements. 007 has had more than his fair share of incredible cars over the years, but the DB5 will forever remain the ultimate Bond-mobile. techradar's Movie Week is our celebration of the art of cinema, and the technology that makes it all possible.
  25. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/TRBCfeatures/Windows%20boot%20screens/Windows-10-boot-screen-470-75.jpgMicrosoft is once again the subject of privacy concerns as users have recently discovered Windows 10 will automatically send parents a detailed history of their children's internet and computer usage The feature, which allows parents to receive a dossier on their child's activity through a weekly email, has attracted criticism due to being switched on by default, according to Business Insider. Weekly emails sent to the inbox of parents show a "Weekly activity report for [child's name]" and it shows the sites visited, apps used and amount of time spent on the PC on a per-day basis. It should be said that the option to monitor your child's device use with activity reports has been available as a Windows feature for some time, however, this is the first time it has been switched by default. There are a plethora of reasons why this has been criticised ranging from the fact that it may stunt the ability for children to use the internet as a means to research sensitive subjects to being flat out "creepy". Some might even say that it invokes memories of George Orwell's vision of the future in 1984. Torrents shun Windows 10This latest wave of criticism against Windows 10 comes in the same week that it was dropped by a range of different torrent sites due to privacy concerns related to the controversial Microsoft Services Agreement. Despite all the bad air surrounding it, Windows 10 has managed reach a huge 75 million total installs in just a month. and the number will only increase as more Windows 7 and 8.1 users realise that time is running out to get their free Windows 10 fix.
