http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/software/Microsoft/Windows%2010/press/windows10-carousel2-470-75.jpgIn a video presentation, Microsoft outlined its plans for Windows 10 as a service to business customers. We had already learned that Microsoft will give more flexibility to IT managers, giving them the ability to place their users on different branches to receive Windows updates, and now we have more details on the update process and how updates will become available to enterprise customers. The three options available to Windows 10 enterprise customers are Current Branch (CB), Current Branch for Business (CBB), and Long Term Servicing Branch (LTSB), with each branch receiving updates differently. Customers will be profiled and placed into the appropriate branch by their IT managers. CB will be available to both enterprise and consumer users, while CBB and LTSB are are strictly for enterprise. The update processOnce updates are ready, they'll be pushed out to CB users first to ensure that the rollout is smooth before Microsoft makes them available to CBB and LTSB users. At the enterprise level, CBB users will have up to eight months to install the update through Windows Update or Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), while LTSB users can delay the update for up to 10 years. This update process means that CB users will have access to new features and patches sooner than customers on LTSB and CBB. The downside is that they'll also be part of a late-stage testing process to ensure that the update doesn't break any apps or existing functionality and that the process goes smoothly. If something goes wrong, Microsoft will learn from the experiences of CB users to make the appropriate fixes or changes before rolling the update out to CBB or LTSB customers. This helps to ensure that enterprise customers won't get a faulty update that disrupts their workflow, resulting in lost productivity or revenue. The update process begins, according to Helen Harmetz, Microsoft Senior Product Manager, with Microsoft building or creating the OS update. The update goes through internal validation, and then gets pushed out to limited and broad test flights. If all goes well, the update will be available to Current Branch users. Once the update is declared business-ready, it will be available to IT managers to push out to their users on CBB or LTSB. If it isn't broken, don't fix itEnterprise users on LTSB will likely get the least amount of updates or new features. In fact, Microsoft encourages IT managers to place most of their users on CB or CBB, with LTSB reserved for mission critical work. Describing the update experience from one LTSB branch to the next, Harmetz says that it is very similar to Windows 7 SP1. Windows 10 LTSB customers will have an in-place upgrade experience to move from one release to the next version, and IT managers can choose to skip an update if they want to. From a prior leak, we also know that IT managers can delay the deployment of new features to LTSB users for up to ten years, and that the new Microsoft Edge browser will not be available to enterprise users on this branch. Because of the absence of Edge, Harmetz says that Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) investments for enterprise is ongoing, but she did not provide additional information in her presentation. LTSB should be reserved for customers working in areas where stability is valued. Interestingly, Microsoft will also make a refreshed LTSB image every few years with new features baked in. Users can install the new image if their administrators permit them. Keeping currentOn the opposite end of the spectrum from LTSB is Current Branch, or CB. This branch is probably the largest update branch for Windows 10 customers as it's available to all consumers running Microsoft's OS, which will debut on July 29 as Windows Home and Windows Professional. CB users will get their updates first as part of Microsoft's defined update strategy. They'll receive security patches, new features and bug fixes before LTSB and CBB users. However, the cost to being early is that if the update isn't stable, CB users will have to go through the growing pains with Microsoft. In effect, CB users are late-stage beta testers. If something goes wrong, Microsoft will learn from the experience and fix the problems before the updates are deployed for business customers. The middle groundSomewhere in the middle of immediate updates available to CB customers and delays of up to 10 years for LTSB customers is CBB. CBB customers will have about eight months to deploy Windows Update after Microsoft makes it available to business branches. Professional, Education and Enterprise customers on Windows 10 in CBB will get new features on Windows Update four months after they're declared business-ready. Enterprise customers on Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) will have eight months to install the updates. If IT managers cannot deploy the update within the timeframe, they won't be able to install future updates or security patches. In this event, IT managers will have to switch to LTSB and perform an in-place upgrade. Likely, the enforcement will help Microsoft defragment the Windows 10 ecosystem and ensure that users are protected from attacks with the most up-to-date security fixes. Windows 10 requirements for enterpriseMicrosoft promises that Windows 10 will work on systems that are compatible with Windows 7, and that's the minimum hardware requirement needed to upgrade. To upgrade, there will be two paths provided to IT managers. A full wipe and load will allow systems to start fresh with a clean install of Windows 10. There will also be in-place upgrades available to migrate Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 customers to Windows 10 in the event that a full wipe is not needed or desired. Additionally, for customers who rely on Windows Store apps – also referred to as Metro apps or Modern UI apps for Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 users – Microsoft guarantees app compatibility moving forward to Windows 10. When we learned that Edge won't arrive for LTSB customers, there was speculation that fragmentation may occur with compatibility of Store apps on Windows 10, but it looks like Microsoft is laying to rest those concerns. Even though Windows 10 Home and Pro versions will be available on July 29, Microsoft has not announced when Windows 10 Enterprise will be available. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/MacLifeWebContent/iPadMusicStudio/ipad_music_hero-470-75.jpgGet ready to rock!http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/iPadMusicStudio/ipad_music_hero-420-90.jpg While Apple has traditionally positioned the iPad as a media-consumption device, the tablet has gained a reputation as a very capable and powerful music-creation tool. GarageBand is a great place to start, but taking the next step can be difficult when faced with an overwhelming number of creative options. Don't worry: we'll point you toward the very best block-rockin' apps and accessories. Before we get started, be aware that the processors in older iPads simply don't pack enough punch to take on many of the top audio apps. You'll want nothing less than an original iPad mini, and the closer you can get to a current iPad Air 2, the better. Also, look for applications that support Inter-App Audio (IAA), Apple's protocol for inter-application operability. Now, let's rock! Apogee MiC 96khttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/iPadMusicStudio/Apogee_Mic-420-90.jpg You can use the built-in microphone to get external audio onto the iPad, but it isn't good enough to be very useful. We recommend the $229 Apogee MiC 96k (£189, AU$329.95), an outstanding bus-powered mic with the highest-quality audio you'll need. Mikey Digitalhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/iPadMusicStudio/Mikey_image-420-90.jpg The $99.95 Mikey Digital from Blue Microphones (£69.95, AU$129.95) is a solid, less-expensive alternative, a slick little Lightening-connected unit that includes a 1/8-inch auxiliary line input, stereo capture, and automatic level sensing. You can connect your USB power adaptor to the mic so the iPad can charge while you're using the Mikey. (Read our original review here.) Line 6 Sonic Porthttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/iPadMusicStudio/Line_6-420-90.jpg You can easily plug a guitar directly into your iPad with the $99 Line 6 Sonic Port (£65, AU$169), which delivers excellent audio quality at a reasonable price. The $199 VX version (£123, AU$279) incorporates a built-in microphone, and both models act as hardware dongles, allowing you to run the full version of Line 6's venerable Mobile POD amp and effects pedals modeling app (UK, AU). iTrack Dockhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/iPadMusicStudio/iTrack-420-90.jpg If you're serious about making an iPad the centerpiece of an audio studio, you should consider an accompanying full-featured I/O interface, such as the excellent $199 Focusrite iTrack Dock (£148.98, AU$329). The iTrack lets you plug in any microphone, instrument, and USB-MIDI controller simultaneously for professional-style recording projects. iConnectAUDIO 4+http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/iPadMusicStudio/iConnectAUDIO4plus-420-90.jpg The $299.99 iConnectAUDIO 4+ (£275, AU$449) is the Holy Grail of iOS interfaces. Not only does it support more I/O options than any other iPad-compatible interface (including legacy DIN-style MIDI gear), it opens a realtime pipeline between your iPad and Mac, leveraging the benefits of each platform and combining them into a single audio pipeline. Auriahttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/iPadMusicStudio/Auria-420-90.jpg There are some basic apps you'll need in order to use your iPad as a pro-level recording and music tool, starting with your main DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) software. Two high-end options are the $24.99 Auria (£18.99, AU$31.99) and Cubasis. Auria currently just supports sampled audio, while Cubasis is the only program besides GarageBand that deals with both audio and MIDI. (A major update to Auria, due sometime this year, is expected to include MIDI.) Cubasishttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/iPadMusicStudio/Cubasis-420-90.jpg The $49.99 Cubasis (£39.99, AU$64.99) is the most powerful, full-featured iOS DAW platform, with an extensive set of MIDI recording and editing tools, integrated sampled audio tracks, a nice set of basic audio-processing tools, and total support for external synths and effects via IAA and AB. The automation potential of all key parameters sets this program apart, and is a key aspect of the professional pedigree of the app. KORG Gadgethttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/iPadMusicStudio/Gadget-420-90.jpg The $29.99 KORG Gadget (£22.99, AU$37.99), and the rather amazing underdog Caustic, are two full-featured synth recording studios with tons of built-in synths. Neither directly supports a dedicated sampled-audio track, but they both offer inelegant workarounds by loading sampled sounds in via their respective sampler instruments. Caustic http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/iPadMusicStudio/Caustic-420-90.jpg The aforementioned KORG Gadget is the luxury ride of the synth-studio category, but the $9.99 Caustic (£7.99, AU$12.99) is an excellent choice for maximum price/performance bang. Among Caustic's extensive instrument offerings you'll find a surprisingly powerful and highly programmable modular synthesizer, something you don't expect to see in such a reasonably priced app. ThumbJam http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/iPadMusicStudio/ThumbJam-420-90.jpg There are so many iOS synths and drum machines that sorting through them all can be a headache, but the $8.99 ThumbJam (£6.99, AU$10.99) stands out. The app offers realistic, real-world instruments with extreme playability, an extensive set of included sounds, really cool accelerometer support (tilting your iPad adds realistic note bends to the electric guitar patch), a vast library of predefined musical scales (insuring that you'll only play a wrong note if you want to), and much more. SynthMaster Playerhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/iPadMusicStudio/SynthMaster-420-90.jpg The newest straight synthesizer on the block, free SynthMaster Player (UK, AU) offers 100 patches right out of the gate, with plenty more aural options available via in-app purchases. It's a no-brainer for electronic music, with loads of really useful sounds. DM1 http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/iPadMusicStudio/DM1-420-90.jpg For laying down percussion, it's hard to beat the $4.99 DM1 (£3.99, $6.49). The app has an exceedingly straightforward interface, a long list of sound options, and an excellent selection of integrated effects. It's really easy to get some cool beats going within moments of opening the app for the first time. DrumStudio http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/iPadMusicStudio/DrumStudio-420-90.jpg If you're more interested in a traditional drum kit that offers maximum flexibility in programming realistic drum patterns, fills, and advanced percussion techniques, $3.99 DrumStudio (£2.99, AU$4.99) is the app with the best ear for keeping it real(istic). DrumStudio is designed to meet the needs of professional percussionists, so it offers loads of advanced creative possibilities for tabletop finger tappers. Audiobus http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/iPadMusicStudio/Audiobus-420-90.jpg $4.99 Audiobus (£3.99, AU$6.49) is the glue that connects most important iOS music apps, providing a realtime pipeline between supporting apps. It lets you use synthesizers, drum machines, effects and processing apps, and recording software together in a logical, powerful production chain. Audiobus will tax the RAM and CPU of even the most powerful iPad, but it's a must-have app for both studio and live work. DFX http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/iPadMusicStudio/DFX-420-90.jpg So many effects apps plug into Audiobus that it's tough to pick a favorite, but you can't go wrong with $3.99 DFX (£2.99, AU$4.99), an inexpensive quad-effects processor with some very slick automation options, a healthy selection of effects (you can use four at a time), and exceptional sound quality. AltiSpace http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/iPadMusicStudio/AltiSpace-420-90.jpg In the effects bucket, we also love the sonic flexibility of the $6.99 AltiSpace (£4.99, AU$8.99), a highly-customizable "convolution reverb" that lets you put instruments inside virtual sonic spaces with ease. The app comes with over 350 presets/sampled spaces, from small rooms to gigantic valleys and everything in between. AudioShare http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/iPadMusicStudio/AudioShare-420-90.jpg $4.99 AudioShare (£3.99, AU$6.49) is essential for moving sampled audio data between multiple apps, in essence providing the universal clipboard that Apple didn't build into iOS. It even has some utilitarian audio-editing features for quick trims. Camera Connection Kit/Adapterhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/iPadMusicStudio/lightning_connection-420-90.jpg Finally, if you have a USB musical keyboard or drum-trigger pad, you'll definitely want either the $29 30-pin Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit (£25, AU$45) or the $29 Lightning to USB Camera Adapter (£25, AU$45). Both make it easy to plug certain musical hardware directly into your iPad. You won't be able to charge your iPad while using it, so be sure to plan ahead — especially if you'll be out in the wild, away from an AC plug. http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/47305670/sc/15/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/231049430277/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/47305670/sc/15/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/231049430277/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/47305670/sc/15/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/231049430277/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/47305670/sc/15/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/231049430277/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/47305670/sc/15/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/231049430277/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/47305670/sc/15/a2t.imghttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/CfSttnn4oDg

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/MacLifeWebContent/Ask/mac_itunes-470-75.jpgGot an Apple, Mac, or iOS tech question? We have the answer. Today we have a reader request about how to transfer your iTunes library from one location to another. This question is specifically about moving your library from an external drive to your main drive, but much of the advice should help no matter where you're moving your files. QuestionI have an external drive that I store my iTunes Library on, but now I want to copy the library back over to my MacBook Pro. I've tried going into preferences, but cannot find anywhere to change the location. How can I do this? AnswerThis process is fairly straightforward. First, before you begin, make sure that your MacBook Pro has enough free storage to house the entire contents of your iTunes library that is stored on the external drive. If you have enough free space, then follow these steps to make the move: 1. Plug in the external drive. 2. Quit iTunes if it's open. 3. Open the Finder and locate your Music folder inside of your Home Directory on your Mac. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/Ask/ASK_MusicLib-420-90.jpg 4. Drag and drop the "iTunes" folder from your external drive to the Music folder. 5. Once the copy has finished, keep the data on the external drive intact should something go wrong. You can now unplug the drive. 6. Launch iTunes while holding down the Option key. When prompted, click the "Choose Library" button and select the iTunes Media folder within the iTunes folder that you copied over to the Music folder in your home directory. 7. Alternatively, open iTunes and navigate to iTunes > Preferences > Advanced and hit the Change button to select the new iTunes Media folder. That's it. From now on, when iTunes launches, it will load the library that is stored in the Music folder on your Mac. Once you are satisfied that everything is working properly, you can delete the iTunes folder on the external drive to reclaim the space. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/Ask/ASK_MusicLib-2-420-90.jpg Got an Apple tech question? http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/events/Microsoft%20Build%202015/screen%20grabs/windows-10-laptop-470-75.jpgWindows 10 Enterprise faces a long wait for companies to start adopting the new OS due to a variety of reasons ranging from the time it will take to roll out to having to train employees on how to use it. First reported by Beta News, a survey carried out by Adaptiva at Ignite 2015 found that 71% of IT leaders plan on waiting six months or more before rolling out the new OS version with as many as 49% planning to wait for longer than a year. There are plenty of barriers that are holding enterprises back from adopting Windows 10 Enterprise. Reasons range from application compatibility and time investment (98%), user training (35%), and product maturity (23%). A little more than half (54%) admit the cloud has no impact on their ability to migrate to the OS, however, 40% said that the cloud is making it harder for them to perform these tasks - a number that sat at just 7% in 2014. Windows 7 remains popularRight now, 89% of the firms surveyed are using Windows 7 and/or another 57% are using Windows 8 with just 11% continuing to persist with the outdated Windows XP OS. Microsoft confirmed the name of every single Windows 10 version last month with Windows 10 Enterprise and Mobile Enterprise providing businesses an extra layer on top of the standard Windows 10 Pro edition. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/software/Microsoft/Windows%2010/press/windows10-08-470-75.jpgWindows 10 users will be protected more than ever before thanks to a new feature that allows software developers to integrate all apps with any anti-malware programs on the computer in question. Antimalware Scan Interface (AMSI), which was unveiled by Microsoft this week, allows apps to automatically send content over to any anti-malware program installed locally by the user and then be scanned without having to set up any extra processes. "While the malicious script might go through several passes of deobfuscation, it ultimately needs to supply the scripting engine with plain, unobfuscated code. When it gets to this point, the application can now call the new Windows AMSI APIs to request a scan of this unprotected content," explained Lee Holmes, principal software engineer at Microsoft, in a blog post. Communications also saferIn addition to the unobfuscation of scripts, AMSI can also be used with communication apps to scan instant messages for viruses before they are displayed on screen. Gamers will also see the benefits as plugins will be scanned by the same anti-malware program before installation to make sure that nothing untoward is present. As well as application developers being able to incorporate the Windows AMSI interface into their Windows 10 apps, antivirus software vendors are also able to integrate support for the AMSI interface inside programs to provide much deeper insight into data that apps might consider malicious. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/mobile_phones/7%20Days%20in%20Mobile/Selfie-Stick-iPad-470-75.jpgRejoice, selfie-generation! The iOS 9 code indicates that some pretty impressive front-facing camera upgrades are coming to Apple's next line of iPhones. Developer Hamza Hood burrowed through the code of the first beta released iOS ever and stumbled on some interesting coding that evidently supports some substantial updates to the FaceTime camera, including 1080p video, 240fps capture at 720p, front-facing flash support (finally) and even selfie panoramas. While virtually no one has ever bought or passed on a phone because of its front-facing camera, it's more of an upgrade of convenience. No one's shooting short films with the selfie-cam, but it'd be nice for iPhone users to take a selfie at a concert and not look like 19th century ghosts for once. Apple's also been playing the field lately when it comes to photo tech, recently acquiring Israeli camera tech firm LinX, which creates multi-aperture camera gear for mobile units, for some $20 million. It's possible we could see the integration of some of LinX's tech in any of the upcoming iOS devices. Apple pushing some it's powerful back-facing camera tech to the front isn't a life changing upgrade by any stretch of the imagination, but the popularity of the selfie movement can't be denied or changed, even by Apple. And you know what they say, if you can't beat em', make a better front-facing camera than everyone else and own the competition. iOS 9 should steal these 3 Android features http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/47206322/sc/15/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/231064176448/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/47206322/sc/15/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/231064176448/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/47206322/sc/15/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/231064176448/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/47206322/sc/15/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/231064176448/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/47206322/sc/15/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/231064176448/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/47206322/sc/15/a2t.imghttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/toi-dYuR_k8

Kaspersky believes that the hack was carried out by a nation-state looking to access other targets. "We discovered an advanced attack on our own internal networks," CEO Eugene Kaspersky wrote on the company's blog. "It was complex, stealthy, it exploded several zero-day vulnerabilities, and we're quite confident that there's a nation state behind it." The sophisticated attack, called Duqu 2.0, is said to involve three previously unknown zero-day techniques. Kaspersky believes the attack was detected at an early stage, but it will continue to check its systems. Duqu 2.0Described as "one of the most sophisticated campaigns ever seen," the Duqu 2.0 hack is believed to be related to the 2011 Stuxnet attacks against countries like Iran, India, Ukraine and France. The attack was discovered in early spring. The hack exploited vulnerabilities in Microsoft's software installer files, which allows IT managers to install software on remote computers. Kaspersky as a middle-man targetThe goal of the Kaspersky attack is still unclear. One theory is that Kaspersky may be used as a target to reach other targets, something that Kaspersky implied as it stated that the attack was used to spy on "several prominent targets." If this is the case, it would be similar to the RSA attack a few years ago where the target was a US defense contractor. "Spying on cybersecurity companies is a very dangerous tendency," said Kaspersky. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/other/Onetimers/iMessage_Spam-470-75.jpgRemember that string of characters that frustratingly crashed your iPhone’s Messages app? Apple is finally addressing the issue with the iOS 8.4 update, set to arrive on June 30. The fourth beta of iOS 8.4 has now been issued to developers, and it officially nipped the message crasher in the bud. The code has also been shown to affect third-party apps from Snapchat to WhatsApp and is related to how certain notifications process Unicode. When a string of characters was sent over Messages, the recipient’s device would immediately respring, crash and reboot rapidly. After that, any attempt to open Messages crashes the app. Apple eventually posted a temporary workaround to the problem, but iOS 8.4 will destroy the annoyance at its core by the end of the month In other iOS 8.4 news, Apple Music is coming with iOS 8.4 on June 30th, challenging Spotify and Tidal in the world of music streaming. Thankfully, it looks like you’ll be able to message your friends about your favorite new tracks without worrying about crashing their phone. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/TRBC/adobe-flash-platform-470-75.jpgYour humble browser has again been identified as the main vector for distributing malware across target machines. A McAfee Labs threat report has highlighted two distinct threats, the first being Adobe's Flash software platform which remains a constant thorn in the side of users who are hit by the double whammy of performance penalties and security issues. Attacks based on it have increased threefold in the first quarter of the year as criminals move away from Oracle's Java and Microsoft's now-obsolete Silverlight. More than 40 new Adobe Flash vulnerabilities were submitted to the National Vulnerability Database in the first quarter of the year with fixes issued by Adobe within 24 hours. New threats coming The current Adobe Flash beta, version 18, promises to bring a number of bug fixes and enhancements related to security, stability, performance and device compatibility. McAfee Labs also identified the CTB Locker ransomware as another rising threat (up by 165 per cent in the first quarter of 2015), coercing victims to pay a ransom in order to get keys for their encrypted files. Malware that can interfere with the firmware of storage devices was another potential threats identified Intel's security business unit. It found that the malware could be used to "reprogram the firmware in SSDs in addition to the previously-reported HDD reprogramming capability", and remained persistent (and undetectable) even if the drives were reformatted and the OS reinstalled. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/MacLifeWebContent/HowToUseScreenSharing/ScreenSharing_hero-470-75.jpg Getting startedhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/HowToUseScreenSharing/ScreenSharing_hero-420-100.jpg Recent versions of OS X - Mavericks and Yosemite - have a really useful function called Screen Sharing. With it, you view the screen of a friend's Mac while having an audio conversation with them. Once you start Screen Sharing, a FaceTime Audio chat is automatically started, so you can talk the other person through whatever OS X process they are trying to do. Screen Sharing is an extremely useful feature if friends regularly ask for help with OS X or vice versa. As you view the screen, you can click on things to highlight them, so you both see a small circle highlighting that part of the screen. You can also take control of the other person's screen (with their permission) and can control their cursor using your mouse or trackpad. You can even copy files from your Mac to theirs, or the other way around. All while you're talking them through things. With Screen Sharing you can help someone get to grips with OS X's features, or get help yourself from a friend. All you need is the Messages app and their Apple ID. Here's how it works. Screen Sharing Overviewhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/HowToUseScreenSharing/Screensharing_annoV2-420-100.jpg A. Screen window When you have the Screen Sharing app open, you'll see that it features just a single window that displays the desktop of another Mac computer. B. Click to highlight Click and hold the mouse inside the Screen Sharing window to reveal this circular loupe. This also appears on the other person's computer, enabling you to point out key parts of the OS X interface. C. Explore menus Though it doesn't appear in your Applications or Utilities folders, Screen Sharing is an app. Explore the menu bar for a host of features and functions. D. Sharing menu The Mac that is being watched gets an additional Screen Sharing menu bar icon, which enables access to Screen Sharing, Mute Audio, Pause and End Screen Sharing options. 1. Open the Detailshttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/HowToUseScreenSharing/Screensharing-1alt-420-100.jpg Open Messages and converse with a friend; you have to share a message to get started. To view their OS X display, click on Details > Screen Sharing and Ask to share screen. ("Invite to share my screen" puts your display on their desktop instead). 2. What they seehttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/HowToUseScreenSharing/Screensharing-2-420-100.jpg The other person gets a notification with "[Your name] would like to view your screen?" They need to click Accept for the session to begin; Decline ends the session. If the other person has Do Not Disturb on, they won't see the alert. 3. Screen Sharinghttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/HowToUseScreenSharing/Screensharing-3-420-100.jpg A window appears on your desktop displaying their desktop. Screen Sharing automatically starts an audio conversation, so you can talk to the other person directly. Click the minimize button in Messages to focus on Screen Sharing. 4. Point things outhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/HowToUseScreenSharing/Screensharing-4-420-100.jpg You can't take control of the other Mac immediately. The idea is you view their desktop and talk through the problem. Click and hold to display a loupe (magnifying circle). The other person will see it on their screen, so you can point things out. 5. Ask for controlhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/HowToUseScreenSharing/Screensharing-5-420-100.jpg If you want to take control of their screen, the other person needs to click the Screen Sharing icon in the Menu bar and choose "Allow [person] to control my screen." You can, of course, use the loupe to guide the other person to the right place. 6. Controlling the screenhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/HowToUseScreenSharing/Screensharing-6-420-100.jpg You now have control of the other Mac. When you move your mouse pointer, the other pointer jumps to that spot. Clicks and drags you do on the Screen Sharing window also take place on their screen, as do key presses. 7. Copying fileshttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/HowToUseScreenSharing/Screensharing-7-420-100.jpg You can copy files directly from one Mac to another while screen sharing. Drag the files from the desktop, or Finder, into the Screen Sharing window. It's easiest to drag and drop to the other desktop, but you can place files in specific folders too. 8. End the sessionhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/HowToUseScreenSharing/Screensharing-8-420-100.jpg Choose Connection > Close to end the session, though the Screen Sharing app remains open. Choose Screen Sharing > Quit Screen Sharing to close the app. The other person can click Screen Sharing in the menu bar and choose End Screen Sharing. Extra Tip: Using Preferenceshttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/HowToUseScreenSharing/Screensharing-9bonus-420-100.jpg Choose Screen Sharing > Preferences for Display and Quality options. You can set the screen at full quality and fine-tune cursor controls. http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/4717af0e/sc/15/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/231041585992/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4717af0e/sc/15/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/231041585992/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4717af0e/sc/15/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/231041585992/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4717af0e/sc/15/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/231041585992/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4717af0e/sc/15/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/231041585992/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4717af0e/sc/15/a2t.imghttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/Z8M5VQ2PXhg

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/TRBC/Miscellaneous/SQL%20Server%202016-470-75.jpgIntroduction and stretching to AzureThe fact that Microsoft runs its Azure cloud with the SQL Database service is changing what it's putting into the next version of SQL Server, and how the company is building it as well, Microsoft's T.K. Rangarajan told TechRadar Pro. One of the most important new features seems tailor-made for security in the cloud – that's what Microsoft is calling Always Encrypted. "Our customers could keep data in the cloud that we don't understand, that governments don't understand. No matter who gets the data it's only the customer that has the ability to interpret it – but they can run queries on it. "We essentially encrypt the data in the client and keep the master key with the customer," he explains. "As soon as it leave the client, in the server it's never in clear text; it's always in cyphertext." But that doesn't mean you have to pull data into a client app to work with it. "We are able to do some sets of operations even with the encrypted text – that is the exciting part. The cyphertext is encrypted inside the client using the master key that only the client knows. It's a similar concept to a password hash, but the beautiful thing is you can still do all the usual performance database optimisations, range scan, hash into the right place and all of that – that's possible because of this. "You can search and query against the cyphertext. And we've done it in a clever way, so for example, if you need to change the master key, you won't need to go re-encrypt the full database over again; we've done some optimisations there." Rangarajan claims being able to work against encrypted data is unique: "We are the first in the world to do this kind of thing in the server. This is comparable to the holy grail in encryption." But he also says it's only the beginning. "There is some good wizardry there but we think this is only the beginning of a slew of innovation coming in the future." Stretch when you're coldAn even more obviously cloud-based feature is the option to 'stretch' a database to Azure by automatically archiving old data. "The idea is if you have an on-premise SQL Server database and you have data, say your order lines, that is historical, that keeps accumulating in append-only type of tables. Today, you keep them for a certain time then you drop partitions from time to time or you archive them in some other way. With Stretch we say it's an infinite database – where I have data that's older than a certain date, that fits certain criteria, automatically, behind my back, dribble it to the sky, stretch it to Azure." But this doesn't work like a backup where you have to wait until it's all finished. "Once you set this up, data gets moved from time to time and we have the flexibility to move it in interesting chunks, but along the way all your transactions succeed correctly with all the same acid guarantees, so you have no changes to make to applications on premises – but the historical data gets stored in Azure." Not only does that take the load of the databases you use daily, it also puts your historical data in the right place for using it with cloud services for business intelligence and other analytics like machine learning. Tip of the iceberg"Think of the database on premises as the tip of the iceberg," Rangarajan suggests, "so the frequently updated hot data remains in SQL Server on-premise and the 'SQL in the cloud' which is essentially SQL Database, holds the big bulk of the data – the cold data sits in the cloud which is optimised for large volumes of data, nicely distributed and all that good stuff." If that sounds familiar, he compares it to "Storsimple for relational tables". But SQL Server 2016 will also simplify doing real-time analytics against your live server. "We give you the ability to have real-time analytics on the fully in-memory optimised transaction tables," says Rangarajan. "We have leadership in in-memory OLTP, SQL 2014 had that, and we also had a separate columns store that is optimised, so you could take a table into one or the other. "Now we're saying that same table that is optimised for OLTP, you can create the column store indexes for that and then you can access the same table, at the same time, for both types of workloads. What that means is a dramatic simplification for BI scenarios. You no longer have to move data just for separating out analytics workloads, you can run it right on SQL Server." Some of the other new features will take advantage of this – the built-in integration with R, Datazen (the mobile BI company Microsoft bought recently) and Hadoop (using the PolyBase technology for working with both relational and non-relational data using T-SQL). Building server software using the cloudAzure is also changing how Microsoft is working on the preview of SQL Server 2016, which will reach general availability "sometime in 2016". Customers will still get regular Community Technology Previews, just monthly rather than every six months. And what they get in the CTPs will already have been tested in production – in the Azure Database service. "We've really synchronised the codebases for all of our SQL assets," explains Rangarajan. "So the current code is the current code across all SQL assets. When we first build a technology, the easiest place for us to share that with the world is to deploy it in SQL Database, where we are fully managed, where we face all the consequences of futzing something up. If it backfires it's us that has to manage. "We're very careful, we flight that, we incrementally roll out at all hours, we face the music for it if anything goes wrong. So we first roll that out and we stabilise it, we ruggedize it, and then we roll out this capability to our preview customers every month." There might well be problems with new code along the way: "I'm sure we'll have a couple of hiccups and we'll overcome them," he predicts confidently. "By the time the release is available, we expect most of capabilities of that release to be well baked in production." Cloud confidenceThanks to that, he thinks the final release will be ready for customers to adopt quickly. "My expectation is that the box will be more ready to be in production as it comes out." Ironically, Azure is the key to improving the server software. "It's only because of the cloud that we're able to speed up the on-premise world," he points out. "If we didn't have a cloud, we wouldn't have the confidence that we could distribute this to even CTP customers and have some level of confidence that it will work out fine, because we will have this in a million databases. That gives you a level of confidence that's hard to match." "This a dramatic switch in our point of view from the previous releases to this release, from SQL Server 2014 to SQL Server 2016. In SQL Server 2014 we said 'let's not mess with the on-premise stuff that runs most of the world's businesses, let's leave it alone and keep it safe and nice and separate'. And we ran SQL Database [on Azure], innovating in the new world. Now we feel very comfortable with the new world and we are taking this deeper cloud-first lifestyle to the server." But he hopes the process will give customers confidence in Azure too. "We have the opportunity to do these sorts of gentle introductions to the cloud, leading our customers to the cloud. And frankly I think we also have the obligation… Our customers have bet on our technologies. They have spent a lot of lives and their careers becoming experts on these technologies, and we have an obligation to take them to the new world with all of this stuff that is valuable." Azure isn't just Microsoft's cloud – it's the company's Cloud OShttp://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/4710f10d/sc/15/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/231064086343/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4710f10d/sc/15/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/231064086343/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4710f10d/sc/15/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/231064086343/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4710f10d/sc/15/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/231064086343/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4710f10d/sc/15/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/231064086343/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4710f10d/sc/15/a2t.imghttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/KlQgmcvnVEc

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/laptops/Apple/New%20MacBook%20%282015%29/review/lid-recline-470-75.JPGYou know the sound your iPhone makes when you plug it in to charge? Well, the new 12-inch MacBooks (yes, those really thin ones) make the same sound when you connect and disconnect the power. And guess what? With a little trick, you can have this same sound on your current MacBook Pro or MacBook Air as well, allowing you to know for sure that your charging cable is indeed properly connected to your laptop. To begin, ensure that you have the latest version of Yosemite (10.10.3 or higher) installed on your MacBook Pro or Air, and then open the Terminal (located in /Applications/Utilities). Unplug your MacBook if it's plugged in. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/software/Apple/iOS%209%20Multitasking%201-470-75.jpgAlthough Apple didn't make any hardware announcements during its WWDC 2015 keynote, several key enhancements introduced with the next generation iOS 9 mobile operating system would make sense on a larger, yet to be announced iPad Pro. The biggest iOS 9 feature that's iPad Pro-ready is simultaneous multitasking, a feature that's missing from prior versions of the mobile operating system but is currently available from some of Apple's biggest tablet rivals. During his keynote presentation, Craig Federighi, SVP of Software Engineering at Apple, showed off how users can run two iOS applications side-by-side, allowing them to juggle tasks without switching or closing apps. This PC-inspired feature in a post-PC era – along with better hardware keyboard support and an improved Quick Type software keyboard – seems primed for an iPad Pro launch. Like having windows but without WindowsSimultaneous multitasking was introduced initially on Windows 7 with a feature Microsoft called Aero Snap. Users can drag an app to the edge of the screen, and it would snap to fill the display's height, allowing apps to run side-by-side. Since its debut, this feature has been replicated on Android by Samsung and LG with features like Multi Window View and floating windows. On iOS 9, simultaneous multitasking works in a similar way. Federighi demonstrated that he can open the Photos app and also have the Messages app run in a smaller pane on the right side of the display. Swiping from the top of the Messages app, Federighi was able to cycle through various different apps that are open and running in the background on this second pane. By running apps simultaneously, users can save time. iPad owners no longer have to hit the home button, close out of an app and then switch to a second app. If you're browsing a web page, you can copy the text you want in one window and paste it into the Notes app running in the second window without having to close out of the Safari browser first. Even though this feature will be coming to the iPad Air 2 through a software upgrade, it makes even more sense for the iPad Pro. As the iPad Pro is rumored to debut with a 12.9-inch display, there is even more screen real estate to view content compared to the smaller 9.7-inch display on the iPad Air 2 or the 7.9-inch screen of the iPad mini 3. The larger screen allows users to see more content in each screen panel without having to do too much vertical or horizontal scrolling, or be stuck with a small font size to fit more content in each pane. For business users, this means you can check email while reviewing a PowerPoint presentation, proof a PDF while chatting with a colleague in an iMessage conversation or preview photos to insert into your Notes or Pages document at the same time. Federighi showed that the windows can be resized. The two apps can take up 50% of the screen real estate each, or they can be sized so one app takes a larger portion of the display. Multitasking on iOS 9 doesn't go as far as Microsoft's implementation with Windows 10. Windows 10 allows users to snap four windows together. Is a convertible in the iPad Pro's future?Another feature that Apple announced with iOS 9 is better support for hardware keyboards. With the current iPad Air and iPad mini models, third-party keyboards are already available from companies like Belkin, Logitech and Zagg, but an even better hardware keyboard for the iPad Pro could transform the tablet into a lightweight productivity powerhouse. "If you want to hook a physical keyboard to your iPad, we've made that easier than ever," Federighi said as he flashed a Keynote slide showing that iOS 9 will support popular keyboard shortcuts for text input, like Command + C for copy, Command + B for bold and others. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Apple/iOS%209%20keyboard%20shortcuts-420-90.jpg If Apple makes a dedicated keyboard folio or dock for the iPad Pro, it would allow the tablet to compete in the same two-in-one hybrid space as the Lenovo ThinkPad 10, Microsoft Surface 3, Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 and Asus Transformer Book T100HA. The keyboard would enhance the iPad's position as a content creation tool. In fact, Samsung didn't make its own branded keyboards for the Galaxy tablets until it debuted the productivity-centric Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 with a 12.2-inch screen. Given that current iPad market share is cannibalized by larger smartphones like Apple's iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus models, a larger iPad Pro with a focus on productivity with a keyboard dock could help Apple appeal to enterprise customers and productivity users. It would also allow Apple to capitalize on the growing interest in two-in-one devices at a time when the tablet market is declining, according to IDC and Gartner reports. Businesses could benefit from such a solution as executives can carry a single device rather than having to travel with a tablet and a laptop. This reduces total hardware cost for deployment, time in having to manage data between two separate devices and travel weight. It's all in the touchSince Apple made no mention of iOS 9 supporting Bluetooth mice or trackpads, the main difference between the iPad Pro with a keyboard cover and devices like the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 with its Type Cover is that the Apple solution may not come with a trackpad. Instead, users would likely type with the hardware keyboard and perform trackpad functions with the iPad Pro's touchscreen. This doesn't mean that Apple hasn't thought about touchpad support on the iPad Pro. Federighi demonstrated that touchpad functionality could be replicated with touchscreen gestures. Tapping the Quick Type keyboard with two fingers would enable a trackpad on the software keyboard. In his demo, Federighi showed that users can easily highlight text to copy with this software trackpad feature. "It starts with something simple like how you work with text," Federighi said. "What makes a multitouch keyboard so special is it can be anything you want." Other featuresIn addition to improved hardware keyboard support, multitasking and Quick Type keyboard, other iOS 9 features introduced by Federighi include two-factor authentication for iCloud security as well as better battery life, key features that are important to business users. While better iCloud security will make Apple's services – like Home Kit and integration with Pages, Numbers and Keynote – more attractive, enterprise users may still demand hardware security. Even though Touch ID can match fingerprint readers on enterprise-class tablets, it's unclear if Apple will be able to match other readers, like smart card support, encryption and TPM. The new features introduced in iOS 9 have set the stage for the iPad Pro's introduction, whenever Apple is ready to launch the highly hyped tablet. Combined with the robust catalog of app titles available for iOS, ease of use and Apple's partnership with former rival IBM, Apple is looking to push more of its tablets into the enterprise. Whether the iPad Pro will cannibalize the MacBook in Apple's renewed post-PC push is anyone's guess at this point. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/AAevents/Apple%20WWDC%202015/iOS9-iPhone-iPad-470-75.jpgiOS 9 was revealed at Apple’s WWDC 2015 keynote today, but one interesting feature in the upcoming mobile operating system was not mentioned: the company’s new Move to iOS app. Apple’s goal with Move to iOS, detailed on its iOS 9 preview page, is to make the migration from Android to iOS devices a bit less painful. As a survivor of this pilgrimage myself, I can attest that this is no easy process. Since the two tech giants are in direct competition, moving between them can feel a bit like pulling teeth. To make the move from Android to iPhone, you simply download the Move to iOS app on both devices and the app will transfer all your important data. From your contacts, camera photos, messages, bookmarks, calendars, books, DRM-free songs and more. Additionally, any apps you had on your Android are suggested in the App Store. And finally, all of your paid apps are saved to your iTunes Wish List. Apple may have delivered a strong blow to Android by making it easier to switch from your Android to an iOS device, but oddly chose not to publicize it. This feature will come bundled with iOS 9, set for a free release in the Fall, and open to public beta testing in July. Check out everything so far from WWDC 2015http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/470e43cf/sc/15/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/231041528082/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/470e43cf/sc/15/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/231041528082/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/470e43cf/sc/15/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/231041528082/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/470e43cf/sc/15/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/231041528082/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/470e43cf/sc/15/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/231041528082/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/470e43cf/sc/15/a2t.imghttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/xHN9UJ9mB9E

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/mobile_phones/philipshue_crop-470-75.jpgLight it up: Philips has announced that Hue, its programmable smart lighting system, will be compatible with the Apple Homekit this Fall. Philips has said that all existing Hue lights will be made compatible with Apple's home control system, also stating that Apple will help existing customers upgrade their lighting. It's possible that a simple firmware update could add compatibility, without having to purchase a new hub. Most of the specifics are still being finalized so it will be a bit of time before we know all the details. According to Phillips, the rollout begins in Fall of 2015. No word or update on Homekit at WWDC 2015. Most likely, we will hear some more specifics when Apple's usual September event rolls around. YouTube : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHvgtAcZl6g

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/software/OSX/OSX%201011/wwdc-2015-grabs/el-capitan-hero-470-75.JPGIntroductionhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/OSX/OSX%201011/wwdc-2015-grabs/el-capitan-hero-420-90.JPG Ahoy there! Apple has unwrapped OS X 10.11 El Capitan, which features new versions of stock apps, a slew of updates and a barrel full of performance improvements. There's nothing radically new to be found with Apple's latest release, but the Snow Leopard-esque speed refinements and productivity-focused tweaks will no doubt be welcomed by the Mac-toting hordes. Without further ado, click on to feast your eyes on the OS X 10.11 El Capitan's new features. 1. Never curse at your cursor againhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/OSX/OSX%201011/wwdc-2015-grabs/big-cursor-420-90.JPG Don't you hate it when you lose your mouse cursor behind windows and apps? ...said no-one ever. Anyway, it's a problem you'll never have again because El Capitan makes the cursor bigger when you shake your mouse like a Polaroid picture. Hopefully it will stop growing before it gets to frankencursor proportions and swallows your desktop. An odd, but welcome feature all the same. 2. Spotlight gets a bit brighterhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/OSX/OSX%201011/wwdc-2015-grabs/spotlight-420-90.JPG El Capitan shows that OS X has got smarter. You can now issue context-specific commands via Spotlight to find files; for example, typing in "slides from [person's name] about [something]" will conduct a more specific search than simply searching from the file name. It remains to be seen what different file types and commands El Capitan recognizes. 3. Apple makes a split decisionhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/OSX/OSX%201011/wwdc-2015-grabs/split-screen-420-90.JPG Here's a feature that Windows users will recognise: Split Screen view. Just as split-screen functionality has come to iOS 9, OS X 10.11 El Capitan now lets you divide the screen to allocate apps in full-screen, with an adjustable black bar running down the middle to alter the size of the screen's two halves. 4. Mail gets full-size attachmentshttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/OSX/OSX%201011/wwdc-2015-grabs/full-size-attachments-420-90.JPG Apple has made some small improvements to OS X's Mail app, which now works with natural search phrases in a similar manner to Spotlight. Typing in "mail I ignored from Hugh", for example, will bring up any unread mail from a contact call Hugh that's been sitting unloved at the bottom of your inbox. Mail also gets iOS-style swipe commands, such as swiping left or right to quickly save an email to a folder or delete it. 5. Metal comes to OS Xhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/OSX/OSX%201011/wwdc-2015-grabs/game-development-420-90.JPG Apple's Metal graphics engine, which is currently available in IOS, has made its way to OSX 10.11 El Capitan. Apple claims that Metal "opens up new possibilities for rich and engaging worlds" and allows for 50% performance in supported games and reduces the level of processing power required to run games by 40%. The Metal API is integrated into the Unreal Engine 4 games engine by Epic games, which was demoed using a cartooney zombie-bashing game called Fortnite. 7. Mission control gets betterhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/OSX/OSX%201011/wwdc-2015-grabs/mission-control-420-90.JPG Apple has made Mission Control smoother and added the ability to activate it with a three-finger swipe to see which apps are open. It works in tandem with OS X El Capitan's new Split Screen feature too. When Split Screen is activated, entering Mission Control allows you to drag open apps and windows into a particular half of a screen. Safari gets pinned tabshttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/OSX/OSX%201011/wwdc-2015-grabs/pinned-tabs-420-90.JPG Safari has added the ability to pin your favourite websites to the toolbar on the left-hand side, something that Chrome users have had for some time. Additionally, El Capitan now tells you which tabs are playing audio, allowing you to close the offending website or mute it. This could be particularly useful when struck by all-infuriating autoplay videos that scream out of the speakers unannounced. http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/470cfc20/sc/15/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/231064064100/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/470cfc20/sc/15/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/231064064100/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/470cfc20/sc/15/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/231064064100/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/470cfc20/sc/15/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/231064064100/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/470cfc20/sc/15/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/231064064100/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/470cfc20/sc/15/a2t.imghttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/qsbZrGOANz4

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/AAevents/Apple%20WWDC%202015/Screens/18-apple-maps-underground-station-surveying-470-75.jpgAt Apple's annual developer conference, the Cupertino, California-based company said it would roll out public transit information to its Maps application for more than 10 cities worldwide, and 300 cities in China. Most consumers will likely shrug off the improvement, given that Google Maps already makes this feature available for 18,000 cities. However, for small business owners, this represents an incredible step forward for Apple and its Maps app. Apple has been widely criticized for the inaccurate information and shoddy design of its Maps app, especially compared to Google's industry-standard Maps app. Apple CEO Tim Cook was forced to make a public apology in 2013 for the disastrous Maps app that came with iOS 6. But despite this perceived inferiority to Google Maps, Apple still has a healthy user base. Apple says there are more than five billion requests coming to Maps each week. Forty-two million of Maps users are based in the US, compared with Google's 65 million US users. For small and local businesses, this group of 42 million users represents an incredible opportunity that can't be ignored. What's new with Apple MapsAt its developer conference, Apple announced it would add an icon in the Maps app that indicates whether or not businesses that appear within search results provide support for Apple Pay. Although this is a simple feature that ultimately serves Apple better than it does the consumer or business, the chance to acquire new business from Apple Pay users could be beneficial to some organizations, especially smaller retailers, restaurants and bars. Additionally, Apple said it would enable users to search the Maps app by storefront type (i.e. Food, Drink, etc.). Today, users can search by entering the type of storefront they want and then by scrolling through a list of locations. However, Apple doesn't hand-select types of venues and then offer them to consumers. This feature should help to improve serendipitous interactions with local businesses for consumers who don't have a specific type of food or item in mind prior to making a search. Google's "Explore Nearby" feature is strikingly similar to the new Apple Maps icon search tool, so Apple isn't inventing anything here, but this new feature, which will be available to those 42 million users I mentioned earlier should help to place new butts into local business seats. Additional good news Rumors indicate Apple Maps will be soon be available on Android, which should dramatically improve the number of users who are accessing your business on the Apple app. With more than one billion Android users globally, Apple Maps' US user base should balloon way past the 42 million mark. A couple weeks ago, a rumor also emerged that suggested Apple-operated camera-equipped automobiles are capturing 3D street view imagery and storefront stills to help Apple improve its mapping data, and reduce reliance on third parties, such as Google. Like Google's My Business feature, which enables businesses to improve search traffic, keep information updated, provide up-to-date links, generate traffic directions, and add customer photos and reviews to a dedicated Maps link, Apple recently updated its Maps Connect tool to include more major cities and listings for even smaller organizations. Launched in 2014, Map Connect allows small businesses to log-in to a private site where they can edit things like Business Name, Phone Number, Address, Location, and many of the other attributes you're likely to find on a Google Maps listings. So what does this all mean? Truth be told: Apple is still far behind Google in terms of functionality and usability. However, if you're a small business with a dedicated marketing team focused on search and web-based listings, you can't allow Apple's Maps stumbles to turn you away from the application. Apple doesn't seem to be giving up the Map game yet, and you can't afford to give up on Apple Maps. It's a vital tool that, although inferior to Google's application, you should be constantly updating and optimizing. http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/470cfc3b/sc/28/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/231064064098/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/470cfc3b/sc/28/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/231064064098/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/470cfc3b/sc/28/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/231064064098/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/470cfc3b/sc/28/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/231064064098/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/470cfc3b/sc/28/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/231064064098/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/470cfc3b/sc/28/a2t.imghttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/9rA9vS_A6I0

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/AAevents/Apple%20WWDC%202015/Screens/50-apple-music-android-470-75.jpgApple unveiled a brand-new music streaming service today at WWDC 2015. Called Apple Music, the service will supplement iTunes with on-demand music streaming, a 24/7 radio station called Beats1 and a social network that will help fans connect with artists "on the deepest level, building relationships that last a lifetime." The service will be released on June 30, alongside Apple iOS 8.4, and will cost $9.99 per month or $14.99 for families of up to six. Senior Vice President of Internet Software and Services Eddy Cue took the audience through a live demo of the service that promises to integrate on-demand streaming from services like Rdio and Spotify with social media services like the revamped Myspace. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/AAevents/Apple%20WWDC%202015/Screens/50-apple-music-beats-one-420-90.jpg In Cue's demo, he showed a behind-the-scenes video of Bastille composing music for their new album, as well as Alabama Shakes's lead singer and guitarist Brittany Howard in the recording studio. The new service will improve recommendations by using not just the run-of-the-mill sorting algorithms, but will use human curators to provide suggestions for what to listen to next. Its killer app, however, will be Beats1, an online radio station that will offer news, interviews and hit music to listeners worldwide. Announced hosts include Zane Lowe, Blame Ebro and Julie Adenuga. Cities include Baltimore, Berlin, Chicago, London, Mexico City, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Toronto and Washington D.C. as well Beijing Shanghai and Shenzen among others in China. Federighi said the pre-installed app will now point users in the right direction to the closest bus, ferry, subway and train terminals and could save its users from "a ton of walking." http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/AAevents/Apple%20WWDC%202015/Screens/wwdc-el-capitan-470-75.jpgApple started off it's big day of software developments by unveiling the next version of mac operating system named OS X El Capitan. Aside from taking its name from California's famous summit, El Capitan adds in more features such as gestures to make deleting messages in Mail quicker and easier than ever. Additionally, users can pin websites in Safari to quickly bring them up anytime. Pinned webpages will act very similar to locked tabs in Chrome and Firefox, except they remain hidden in Safari. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/AAevents/Apple%20WWDC%202015/Screens/wwdc-osx-split-window-420-90.jpg Organizing the desktopOn top of bringing new features to the Mac desktop environment, the new version of OS X will allow users to better manage their windows. Spotlight for starters now comes with a resizable window, which can be moved around as well over the static window found in OS X Yosemite. Spotlight in OS X El Captain will also be able to understand natural language searches such as "mail I ignored from Phil" and "documents I worked on in June." Window management, similarly, has been improved with tools to auto arrange windows by dragging them to the side, much like window snapping in Windows. Migrating a window past the top of the screen, meanwhile, will make a window go full screen and turn it into a desktop of its own. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/AAevents/Apple%20WWDC%202015/Screens/wwdc-metal-420-90.jpg Pedal to the metalOf course, El Capitan also brings performance increases. This includes a 1.4x acceleration in app launching, a two times improvement in switching apps, the time to receiving mail messages is twice as fast, and opening a PDF in preview is four times as fast. Additionally, OS X El Capitan also marks Metal's introduction into the Apple's desktop environment since it was first implemented with iOS 8 last year. To remind you Metal is a low-level, low-overhead hardware-accelerated graphics API, which should allow for a 50% improvement in performance with up to 40% greater rendering efficiency. Adobe so far as been able to leverage Metal's capabilities to get an 8x improvement with rendering effects in After effects. The software maker also announced it is adopting Metal in its OS X apps, which has resulted in a 10x improvement in draw call performance. Epic Games also took to the stage to demo Fortnight running entirely on Metal. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/AAevents/Apple%20WWDC%202015/Screens/wwdc-smarter-spotlight-420-90.jpg When does it come out?OS X El Capitan will be available to developers starting today with a public beta to release in July. The Full version of the new Mac OS, meanwhile, will be free to everyone this fall. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/TRBC/windows-10-mobile-tablet-470-75.jpgA picture of a what looks like a 10-inch tablet running Windows 10 Mobile has emerged on a Chinese website. If the picture and the accompanying text prove to be genuine, it is likely to cross quite a lot of people at Microsoft. The company's official stance on Windows 10 Mobile is that it should be used only on small tablets and smartphones. That is because Microsoft charges a license fee to companies that choose to sell tablets with a screen size larger than 8-inch, allowing them to bundle the full Windows 10 operating system (as opposed to the Mobile version, often seen as a connected, but ultimately more limited OS). The unidentified device, which was peeked at Computex 2015, ran an ARM-based Rockchip RK3288 SoC, a quad-core 32-bit model that is based on the Cortex-A17, has a display with a 1024 x 768 pixel resolution (like the first iPad) and has an onboard modem, which means that it is essentially a big phablet. Opting for an ARM-based solution would give more leeway and flexibility to manufacturers who would be able to produce one type of hardware that can run two operating systems. The last ARM-based OS from Microsoft, Windows RT, is all but dead now Source: WindowsblogitaliaCheck our hands-on review of Windows 10http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/470aa980/sc/15/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/231041512612/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/470aa980/sc/15/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/231041512612/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/470aa980/sc/15/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/231041512612/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/470aa980/sc/15/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/231041512612/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/470aa980/sc/15/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/231041512612/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/470aa980/sc/15/a2t.imghttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/1hL5ZQP1V0E

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/events/Apple%20launches/iPad_Oct_2013/apple_launch_generic-470-75.jpgWe've known for some time that Apple is planning a new music streaming service, but now it's (just about) official: Sony Music CEO Doug Morris told attendees at a conference in France that "it's happening tomorrow" according to VentureBeat. Tomorrow is of course WWDC day and the new Apple Music should make up a substantial part of Apple chief Tim Cook's keynote. We're expecting it to be built on the Beats Music service Apple picked up with Beats last year. Unfortunately Morris didn't go into much detail about what Apple Music will involve, so we're still waiting for confirmation on prices and formats and to see whether or not there'll be a free tier (probably not). The tide is higherMorris was happy to discuss Sony's reasons for joining up though. "What does Apple bring to this? Well, they've got $178 billion dollars in the bank. And they have 800 million credit cards in iTunes." "My guess is that Apple will promote this like crazy and I think that will have a halo effect on the streaming business," added Morris. "A rising tide will lift all boats. It's the beginning of an amazing moment for our industry." We will of course be bringing you all the news from WWDC 2015 as it happens tomorrow, 8 June. The main keynote kicks off at 10am on the west coast of the US, which is 6pm in the UK and 3am on Tuesday morning Australian Eastern Time. Apple's new music service could cost as much as Spotifyhttp://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/4703be53/sc/28/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/231122622325/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4703be53/sc/28/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/231122622325/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4703be53/sc/28/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/231122622325/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4703be53/sc/28/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/231122622325/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4703be53/sc/28/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/231122622325/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4703be53/sc/28/a2t.imghttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/1Ify7NDdwNU

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/MacLifeWebContent/Ask/ask_mac-FLAT-470-75.jpgGot an Apple, Mac or iOS tech question? We have the answer. This time, we answer a reader's question about file extensions in OS X. Some people like 'em, some people don't - once upon a time, Mac files didn't have extensions at all! So how do you determine whether they're shown or not? Here's the simple solution. QuestionI recently switched to a new Mac, and I've noticed something weird going on: when I save files or take screen grabs, they tend to be missing their file extensions (.txt, .png, etc.), which was never a problem on my old machine. How do I get them back? AnswerThere are a couple of things you can do to ensure that your files show their extensions. The simplest is to go to the Finder > Preferences menu, select the Advanced tab, and check the "Show all filename extensions" box. All your file extensions should now be visible - easy as pie. Conversely, if you want to hide your file extensions, just uncheck the box. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/Ask/ASK-fileext1-420-90.jpg You can also choose to show your file extensions on a per-file basis. When you're saving a file, you'll sometimes see a checkbox that lets you choose to hide the file extension, although this option may not appear if you've turned on the universal "Show all filename extensions" preference. Furthermore, if you want to enable or disable the extension of any existing file, click on the file, then choose the Get Info option (either from the File menu, by right-clicking, or by hitting Command + I); under the Name & Extension section, there's a "Hide extension" checkbox you can turn on or off. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/Ask/ASK-fileext2-420-90.jpg Got an Apple tech question?
