  1. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/laptops/Apple/New%20MacBook%20%282015%29/review/macbook-stool-470-75.JPGYou may occasionally get into a situation where the DNS on your Mac needs to be flushed from the system in order for a new server or some other DNS address change to be recognized by your computer. Usually you don't need to worry about this unless you're a systems/network administrator or if you're a web developer, but there may be other network issues that can be solved with a simple DNS cache flush. In those situations, you can use the command in this how-to without even having to restart your Mac. With almost every iteration of OS X, the command has changed to flush the DNS cache. In this article, we'll show you how to clear the DNS cache in OS X Yosemite (10.10). The old "mDNSResponder" command no longer works since Yosemite has a new system that manages the DNS cache. Reset MDNS Cache (Multicast DNS)OS X utilizes two DNS cache systems; the first is a MDNS Cache (or Multicast DNS) that handles the zero configuration services on your local network. To reset the MDNS cache, open the Terminal (located in Aplications/Utilities) and type the following command, followed by the return key: sudo discoveryutil mdnsflushcache If you are prompted for a password, simply enter it, then press return again. Reset UDNS Cache (Unicast DNS)The second DNS cache is called UDNS (or Unicast DNS), which handles associations between the network addresses and the network endpoints. To reset this cache, open the Terminal, then enter the following command: sudo discoveryutil udnsflushcaches Again, you may be prompted for a password. If so, enter it, then press return. Reset Both Caches at Oncehttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Features%202/computing%20how%20tos/solve%20connection%20issues%20by%20clearing%20the%20os%20x%20dns%20cache/cory-bash-420-90.JPG If you wish to reset all DNS caches in OS X Yosemite at once, then simply join the commands together with a semicolon, then paste them into Terminal like this: sudo discoveryutil mdnsflushcache; sudo discoveryutil udnsflushcaches After you've typed the command on a single line, all you have to do is press enter to flush both cache systems in OS X. http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/233194748020/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/481ad286/sc/28/rc/1/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/233194748020/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/481ad286/sc/28/rc/2/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/233194748020/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/481ad286/sc/28/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/233194748020/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/481ad286/sc/28/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/233194748020/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/481ad286/sc/28/a2t.imghttp://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/481ad286/sc/28/mf.gifhttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/PI-__gc7GCM
  2. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/software/Google/Photos/google-photos-organize-470-75.jpgIt looks like Google Photos will continue uploading your photos even after you uninstall the app itself on Android phones. David Arnott, Nashville Business Journalist editor, who discovered this anomaly, had previously tried the app, and then uninstalled it months ago. Just recently though, he decided he wanted to give the app another go. But after he reinstalled the app signed in, he was surprised to see photos that had been uploaded after he deleted Google Photos from his phone. It's all in the settingsIt turns out that Google Photos' uploader settings is actually not part of the apps own settings, but in fact connected to the Google Settings app on Android phones, which is in charge of things like Google's locations, backup and search settings. The uploading anomaly is likely due to the fact that Google Photos used to be part of Google+, and its settings is also mostly connected to the Google Settings app. It's an interesting web of settings. So, if you used to use Google Photos or Google's automatic photo backup option, and no longer want your photos uploaded to the cloud, you can simply jump into the Google Settings app and turn off the "Google Photo Backup" option. While you're there, you may as well check out the other options you can turn on and off as well. Here's our review of Google PhotosVia Engadget http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/233194708376/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/481721e4/sc/15/rc/1/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/233194708376/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/481721e4/sc/15/rc/2/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/233194708376/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/481721e4/sc/15/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/233194708376/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/481721e4/sc/15/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/233194708376/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/481721e4/sc/15/a2t.imghttp://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/481721e4/sc/15/mf.gifhttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/H0YdBZGek6M
  3. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/MacLifeWebContent/HowtoUnidentifiedDevelopers/MacUnidentifiedDeveloper-zoom1-470-75.jpgHave you ever downloaded an app on your Mac, only to be told you couldn't open it because it wasn't from the Mac App Store or wasn't from an identified developer? If so, you're experiencing Gatekeeper, a tool that debuted in the last release of OS X Lion that's designed to prevent questionable software from causing trouble on your Mac. For some users, this can be a great feature that helps keep their Mac safe; however, for power users who know they are downloading apps from trusted sources, it may be imperative to disable this feature from time to time to install and run apps from developers that haven't signed their apps. In this article, we'll show you the regular way to disable this feature, as well as how to do it from the command line without the need to delve into System Preferences. This is great for when you're remotely installing software on a Mac, or if you just like the command line. Disabling GatekeeperTo turn off Gatekeeper, navigate to your System Preferences > Security & Privacy. In the General tab, you'll see a section with the heading "Allow apps downloaded from." If you select "Anywhere" from the list that follows, then Gatekeeper will be disabled and you'll be able to open any app, regardless of where it was downloaded from. This is the least-safe setting for Mac security, however, and you should not leave the setting disabled like this unless you always download apps from trusted sources. For higher security, of course, you can select the "Mac App Store" or "Mac App Store and identified developers" options to keep Gatekeeper turned on. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/HowtoUnidentifiedDevelopers/Gatekeeper-Preferences-420-90.jpg Checking the status of Gatekeeper If you want check the status of Gatekeeper on your Mac without opening your system preferences, you can do so by opening the Terminal and typing the following command, followed by the return key: spctl --status http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/HowtoUnidentifiedDevelopers/Gatekeeper-Terminal-1-420-90.jpg If the response is "assessments enabled," then Gatekeeper is active; it'll say "disabled" if it has been turned off. Disabling Gatekeeper via TerminalYou can disable Gatekeeper from Terminal as well. Do so by typing this command, followed by the return key: sudo spctl --master-disable After specifying your administrator password, Gatekeeper will be disabled, and you will be able to install and run software on your Mac downloaded from anywhere online. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/HowtoUnidentifiedDevelopers/Gatekeeper-Terminal-2-420-90.jpg If you ever wish to re-enable Gatekeeper through Terminal, then simply use the above command again, replacing "disable" with "enable." This will reactivate the Gatekeeper feature on your Mac. 4. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/software/Windows/Windows%2010%2020%20features/windows%2010%2020%20things%20Hero-470-75.jpgMicrosoft is weeks away from debuting its Windows 10 operating system, but don't expect to see it pre-installed on new PCs at launch. Instead, Microsoft will offer customers who buy a new PC starting on July 29 the opportunity to upgrade to Windows 10 Home or Pro at retail stores. If you want a new PC and Windows 10 on launch day, expect to spend a little bit of extra time at your retailer for the entire process. Best Buy, Bic Camera, Croma, Currys/PC World, Elkjøp, Jarrir, Incredible Connection, Media Markt, Staples, Wal-Mart, Yamada, Yodobashi and other retailers will offer new PC buyers data migration services and upgrade support, said Yusuf Mehdi, Vice President of Windows and Device Marketing, in a blog post. Racing against the clockThe problem is that Microsoft is still working on finalizing the operating system ahead of the launch. This means that Windows 10 hasn't been sent to device manufacturers to test with their own drivers, despite rumors that a "release to manufacturing" build would be ready last week. "You will see computers running with Windows 10 installed very soon after the 29th and then in the fall a whole new class of machines for the holidays," Mehdi explained in an interview with Bloomberg. How to get Windows 10As Microsoft previously outlined, Windows 10 will be available first for the 5 million Windows Insiders who participated in the Insider Preview program to test the operating system. The final release of Windows 10 will be available to Insiders as a test flight, similar to how preview builds are delivered. Regular consumers who are not part of the Insider Preview program are able to reserve their copies. Microsoft will stagger the digital delivery of the download, so that the company's servers are not overwhelmed. Windows 10 is available as a free upgrade to existing Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 users during the first year of release. For users looking to buy a PC or notebook on or after July 29, Mehdi explained that they will be bumped up in the download queue if they choose not to immediately upgrade in retail stores when they purchase their new system. Raising awarenessTo help consumers get acquainted with the new operating system, Microsoft will be hosting demos at its retail stores as well as through partner retailers. The company will also host launch events in 13 cities with live demos. With these events, Microsoft likely wants to avoid the upgrade confusion caused when Windows 8 launched. Despite advertisements promoting Windows 8's ease of use, consumers had trouble adjusting from the classic desktop of Windows 7 to the Metro-inspired Modern UI of Windows 8 with Live Tiles. Windows 10 will bring new features to the experience, including a new Start menu, Cortana digital voice assistant, Microsoft Edge browser and Continuum for owners of hybrid and convertible notebooks. "Beginning July 20th in the U.S. and July 29th globally, the first wave of TV and digital ads will highlight how Windows 10 delivers a more human way to do – brought to life with features like Windows Hello and Microsoft Edge," Mehdi added. 5. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/mobile_phones/PhoneCall-470-75.jpgTelstra has announced that come October 1 this year, it will be pumping up the price of its line rental for home phone lines, as well as the rates for calls to national, mobile and 13 numbers. Customers on the Telstra Home Phone Budget plan will be slugged with an extra $1 a month, while selected other plans will see fees increase by $2 a month. Additionally, the call connection fee to national numbers, mobiles and international numbers will increase to 55 cents, while the rate for 13 numbers will jump from 35 cents to 40 cents per call. Check your planGiven Telstra doesn't offer Naked DSL plans, this price increase is likely to impact a larger market than just those Telstra customers using a home phone for calls. If the price changes apply to you, Telstra is promising to let you know in writing from late July. But it could also be a good opportunity to check your broadband (and phone) plan and see if you can't get a better deal. If you're a Telstra mobile customer, these are the best Telstra phones
  6. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/software/Windows/windows-insider-achievement-470-75.JPGIntroductionhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Windows/windows-insider-achievement-420-90.JPG For years, before the internet became truly mainstream, beta software was shrouded in a cloak of mystery. Copies of software would often circulate on private servers or on CD-ROMs or DVDs but the advent of cheap, fast connectivity and the prevalence of software-as-a-service has changed that. Now allowing more people to test an application at an earlier stage in its development seems to have become a de-facto step, allowing for a more transparent and open process that is often used to evangelise and build momentum towards the final launch of the said software. The best case study is probably that of Windows 10 whereby Microsoft enrolled millions of users eager to try their hands at the latest version of the company's operating system. These early adopters provided Microsoft with tons of feedback either directly or indirectly (using telemetry) and highlighted the importance of a successful so-called Alpha/Beta program. Should you want to join this growing army of anonymous software developers' lil' helpers, here's a list of some of the best-known alpha, beta or nightly builds. Note: We deliberately kept games, non-Windows and mobile applications off the radar as it would have been too much of a task. Also bear in mind that this is development, bleeding edge software. Expect them to crash, produce errors or spit out any sort of random message box at any moment. Should this happen and should your computer explode (or any other similar mishap), we cannot be held responsible. You are installing these applications at your own risk. If you think we've missed one app (or two or three), nudge us in the comments. 75 best free PC software downloads from MicrosoftInternethttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Chrome/Google_Chrome_on_PCs-420-90.jpg Opera Even though Opera might not have the user base of Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox, it makes up for this by providing beta updates every two weeks and bringing new features to the table that other browsers simply can't offer. In the past it has brought the much vaunted Turbo mode to beta users first, which gives slow connections a chance to shine by compressing pages by up to 80%. It has given over a whole section of its website to developers and openly encourages input from what is a burgeoning community. Chrome Hated by some, used by many, and tweaked by developers all over the globe, Google brings many of the best loved new features to four different channels. Canary builds are released daily, comprised of the least stable "bleeding edge" features, and can be run alongside a more stable version of the browser. The Dev channel is the next step up and is updated once or twice a week to show what's being worked on right now, and it is updated as soon as it is tested. Beta is updated weekly and gets features over a month before Stable gets the features. Chromium The open source project behind the Google Chrome browser is where you come if Canary isn't hardcore enough for you and you want something even more unstable/new. The Chromium continuous build waterfall provides working builds that can be downloaded by taking down the number under "LKGR" at the top of the page, going to this Google Storage bucket, and downloading the correct build. Firefox Like Chrome, Firefox has four different release channels that all offer a very different way to experience the browser. Nightly is the most unstable and is where the highest level of experimentation occurs – users are told to expect features to appear one day and be gone the next. With Aurora, meanwhile, upcoming features will be relatively stable and in an early state yet there's no guarantee they'll ever make it to the final version. Beta is the most stable pre-release and the likelihood of anything crashing is fairly low. This is all leading up to the Stable releases. Each channel lasts for six weeks for each release and gives ample time for a lot of experimentation. Thunderbird Mozilla also has a free email application that has plenty of features, is free, and has two release channels prior to its stable release. Earlybird is the first channel and gives developers the opportunity to provide feedback on the features they liked/disliked the most. Beta brings a more stable experience that again gives users the chance to submit comments on features and this is all before the Stable channel provides the latest release. There is also a Daily channel that precedes Earlybird and each release follows a similar timescale to Firefox. Multimediahttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/DOWNLOADS/video/Kodi/Kodi-1-420-90.jpg Kodi Kodi, or XMBC to give the software its former name, is a free open source media player that is developed by the XMBC Foundation and available for just about every operating system out there. Third parties have a huge part to play in the non-profit video player and plugins are contributed to every release by different parties. This means that a new version of Kodi is being developed at all times with nightly builds delivered which are the most unstable, and monthly builds arriving followed by a final stable build about once every year. The upcoming release, Isengard, has so far seen two Alpha builds and a couple of Beta releases. VLC Another of the non-profit open source options is the renowned VLC Player. This software has a presence across a huge range of platforms and nightlies are available for Windows (32-bit and 64-bit), Mac OS X, Ubuntu, as well as a number of different versions of Android. Handbrake One of the internet's most popular video transcoders, Handbrake has been around for some time and given that it's open source, there's an active community constantly contributing to the project. Nightly builds are released and based on the latest development code available with Windows, Mac, Ubuntu and LibHB all supported by the team. The French company's developer section is among the most straightforward around, and there's a dedicated forum for you to post information on any bugs that you find whilst playing around with the builds. Audacity Making a name for itself in the free audio recording category, Audacity's team brings binaries for various different versions of Windows, Mac OS X and GNU/Linux. Mac users are treated to alpha builds every night at 03:15 (GMT) in the "Release" configuration from the GIT trunk. Complementing this is a weekly alpha build in "Debug" configuration that comes out every Sunday at 04:15 (GMT) and is slower so as to be able to trace crashes and other issues. For Windows XP/Vista/7/8 users there's a "frequent" but not nightly alpha build in "Release" configuration and Ubuntu developers get daily PPA installation packages. The latter are against wxWidgets 3.0 that aren't supported by Audacity and may contain bugs. Utilitieshttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/DOWNLOADS/features/Best-software-2014/Evernote-420-90.jpg Synergy project Ever wanted to extend the use of your expensive new keyboard and mouse? The Synergy project makes that possible, allowing you to use one set of peripherals across multiple computers, with support for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux, and there's a high level of developer support constantly striving to make it a more extensive product. Nightly builds are provided for all three platforms via a very basic page that simply lists every single one ever released along with a search bar at the top. Here you'll also find a stable version every few days. Filezilla Safely uploading files onto the internet means downloading an FTP server. FileZilla is one of the better solutions out there and offers an extensive level of nightly builds for developers. Windows, Mac OS X and Linux are all supported with the nightly builds page that lists the versions that are supplied with a green or red colour indicating the presence of a build. The extensive development section also includes the source code of the latest stable release, and a version history including the latest changes plus a changelog. 7zip Compressing image and document files in this age of free cloud storage isn't as relevant as it used to be, but there are plenty of larger files that need to be smaller in order to be shared. 7zip is the best cross-platform program out there for this purpose and provides a number of builds to tinkered with. For those that want something a bit more stable the alpha and beta versions are available straight from the front page. Developers looking for the latest builds are encouraged to visit the Sourceforge page, where there are discussion groups and a Wiki page that takes some getting used to but contains information on various implementations of the program. Evernote Recognised as one of the best free note-taking programs out there, Evernote has become an app that has, in part, forced the hand of Microsoft to bring Office to even more devices. A section of the website is given over to developers to play around with the API that allows them to plug into Evernote with their own apps. It doesn't, however, provide nightly builds of the program itself yet there is plenty that can be done with the API – and with the active forums you'll always find a helpful ear. Cyberduck Another way to browse FTP, SFTP, WebDAV, S3 or OpenStack Swift, Cyberduck is available for both Mac and Windows. It is of the open source persuasion and as such is ripe for developers to have a tinker around with. Nightly, or snapshot, builds of the program can be found here and are updated on a daily basis for those that want a tough and unstable version of the program. There is even a way to switch to the snapshot or beta builds by using the update settings inside either Windows or Mac OS X (find out more here). uTorrent Torrent downloads have always been synonymous with the names BitTorrent and uTorrent, which are both owned by the former company. New releases are out all of the time and are split up into Beta or Stable depending on how safe they are to use. Each one gets a new flavour every couple of weeks with the beta releases available via this page and stable ones can be found here. Unfortunately there's little in the way of nightly builds, but the regularity of beta and stable releases means that features find their way into this program at a faster rate than some others. Business/Enterprisehttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/DOWNLOADS/features/Best-software-2014/OpenOffice-420-90.jpg ProjectLibre Replacing the Microsoft Project is no mean feat but with rave reviews and awards for being one of the top open source projects, ProjectLibre has done just that. The open source project management solution is updated very regularly and both the code plus every version that's ever been released can be found on the dedicated SourceForge page. Finding nightly builds, however, is tricky and there is little information online outside of the discussion boards on the ProjectLibre site itself. Windows 10 Windows 10 will be one of the biggest revolutions to hit PCs in a number of years and its imminent arrival means that the Windows Insider hub has been rife with activity in recent months. Microsoft has even turned up the speed it delivers updates to its insiders. Microsoft's method differs to some of the others on this list in that you must become part of the Windows 10 Insider Program to get the builds. Becoming part of the "fast" ring ensures you can get updates as they're available and you can stay on board once Windows 10 gets its public release. Office 2016 Office is the name in productivity and even though Microsoft's attempting to change the way it is used by the masses, there will always be an offline version for everyone who prefers it that way. That means a steady stream of builds for its latest version, Office 2016, which are distributed through the same Insider scheme as Windows. All you need to do is sign up and strap in for an endless stream of updates. Basically, if you're a Windows Insider you know the drill. Windows Server 2016 Businesses and enterprises are eagerly awaiting the arrival of Windows Server 2016 almost as much as consumers are with Windows 10. The server level revolution doesn't get the same level of updates as Office 2016 and Windows 10, but you can still get hold of the latest versions through the TechNet Evaluation Center. The technical preview builds are designed for enterprise customers and delivered every so often with the latest one including support for various containers. OpenOffice Apache's incredibly popular free Microsoft Office alternative is a haven for developers that want to tinker with the inner workings of the program and shines as an open source option for those that need to create documents. Nightly builds are available for Windows and Linux in English and German with snapshots also released every Sunday for both platforms and in over 40 languages. Apache provides all of them on this page and there is also an extensive Wiki page to help anyone out with the nightly builds. LibreOffice Another of the free Microsoft Office options is LibreOffice and there's little to choose between Apache's offering and LibreOffice. It appeals to developers that want to have a play with the inner workings through a dedicated collection of nightly builds that, unlike OpenOffice, also includes Mac OS X as an option alongside Linux and Windows. There are even Android versions that can be obtained. If you're slightly worried about the nightlies you could go for the beta versions available here that run alongside your stable version. Graphicshttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/DOWNLOADS/image_editors/GIMP/GIMP-420-90.jpg GIMP Shelling out hundreds of dollars for Adobe's Photoshop software is not to everyone's taste. Especially when there are programs like GIMP that are free and perform a similar set of functions. Developer releases are split into two different streams. The Stable Series include the very latest bug fixes and, although they aren't as stable as the official releases, they can be used if you have found a bug fix that has yet to be applied to the full version. The Development Series, on the other hand, can be very unstable and only recommended for work that isn't of a serious nature. One last thing – the builds are for Windows 32-bit and 64-bit only. Inkscape Another of the free open source vector graphics editors is Inkscape and it offers more to developers than GIMP when it comes to nightly builds. 7. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/mobile_phones/iPhone/iOS%209/download-iOS-9/download-ios-9-beta-5-470-75.jpgDownload and install iOS 9http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/mobile_phones/iPhone/iOS%209/download-iOS-9/download-ios-9-beta-5-420-90.jpg There are exciting new iOS 9 features set to premier this fall, but you don't have to wait another two months to test them out. Apple has launched an iOS 9 public beta, which gives everyone access to the iPhone and iPad update a little early. The company's instructions, however, aren't very comprehensive. That's why we, not willing to wait for the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus release date likely in September, went through the process several times and created this handy a how to guide. It did take a few attempts to install iOS 9 due to everyone taxing Apple's servers all at once, but the new features outweigh those temporary problems and minor beta bugs. Compatible iPhone and iPad deviceshttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/mobile_phones/iPhone/iOS%209/beta/ios-9-compatibility-iphone-ipad-420-90.jpg iOS 9 is compatible with newer iPhones and iPads, which translates to all Apple phones and tablets that have since launched 2011. That's good news because it means the compatibility list doesn't axe any new devices, including the iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and even the iPod Touch 5th generation. If you devices can run iOS 8, it can also run iOS 9. Easy. This is where Apple's mobile operating system really cuts into the fragmented Android platform. Backup your iPhone and iPad firsthttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/mobile_phones/iPhone/iOS%209/download-iOS-9/download-ios-9-beta-4-420-90.jpg It's very important to backup your iPhone and iPad before installing iOS 9. You never know what may go wrong with this unfinished software. It could claim the life of your photos and texts. I recommend using a lightning cable to manually backup to iTunes instead of relying on a Wi-Fi connection or iCloud. It's just faster and more reliable - as long as you don't mess with the cable. It's a little more complicated for New MacBook 2015 owners who have to resort to a USB Type C adapter, but it's well worth the extra effort just in case. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/mobile_phones/iPhone/iOS%209/download-iOS-9/download-ios-9-beta-7-420-90.jpg Plug your iPhone or iPad into a computer, open up iTunes if it doesn't automatically launch and select the tiny iPhone icon in the top left of Apple's confusingly designed music software. iTunes' iPhone menu includes a "Backup" pane in the middle of this page. Select the "This computer" radio button instead of iCloud for the most secure backup method. You can switch it back afterward. Archive before downloading iOS 9http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/mobile_phones/iPhone/iOS%209/download-iOS-9/download-ios-9-beta-6-420-90.jpg Press the "Backup Now" button on the right to manually backup your files. Backing up all of the apps on from your phone or tablet is optional and less important. I do it every once in a while. Once the backup process completes its four main steps, double check that it worked and archive it in the Preferences menu. Click on File in the top menu, Preferences, the Devices tab and right click on the latest backup. Select "Archive" to isolate this backup file so that it's not replaced by future backups. If you're extra cautious: You can click "Show in Finder" to locate the folder (with a funny gibberish name) and drop it into an external hard drive. Download iOS 9 beta software profilehttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/mobile_phones/iPhone/iOS%209/download-iOS-9/download-ios-9-beta-8-420-90.jpg Apple requires downloading and installing an iOS 9 beta profile in order to get the new operating system up and running. Select Download Profile from beta.Apple.com/profile via your device's Safari mobile browser, not your computer. It also won't work on Chrome for iOS or any other browser from the App Store. I tried. You may have to log into your Apple account in order to access this page. You'll know it worked once it asks you to "Choose a Device" in a menu. Select iPhone or iPad. Installing it on Apple Watch does nothing at the moment since there's no WatchOS 2 public beta. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/mobile_phones/iPhone/iOS%209/download-iOS-9/download-ios-9-beta-9-420-90.jpg Select "Install" in the top right corner of the iOS 9 beta software profile menu and enter your phone or tablet's passcode. Agree to the consent form you'll never actually read and hit Install. A restart is required in order to apply the changes, so select "Restart" in order to make that happen. The profile is now installed and you're ready to update to iOS 9. Download iOS 9 public betahttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/mobile_phones/iPhone/iOS%209/download-iOS-9/download-ios-9-beta-10-420-100.jpg http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/mobile_phones/iPhone/iOS%209/download-iOS-9/download-ios-9-beta-11-200-100.jpgOnce your iPhone or iPad restarts, everything looks the same. That's because you're still running iOS 8. Navigate to the Settings menu, select General, Software Update and you'll see iOS 9 Public Beta 1. Download and install this 1.4 GB file, which thankfully requires less free space than iOS 8's 4 GB. This prompts you for your passcode once more and asks you to read over Terms and Conditions you'll blindly agree to, anyway. You may see "Update Requested..." and have to wait several minutes for Apple's servers to deliver the beta firmware update. In my latest attempt, that took me 6 minutes, while the download over Wi-Fi took 22 minutes (it had said "35 minutes remaining" at first). Install iOS 9 betahttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/mobile_phones/iPhone/iOS%209/download-iOS-9/download-ios-9-beta-12-420-100.jpg With the iOS 9 beta downloaded onto your device, you'll see a prompt to install the software update. It'll automatically install in 10 seconds if you don't select "Later" or "Update" first. It'll read "Verifying update..." and don't be alarmed if it fails. My first four iOS 9 beta install attempts came back with "Unable to Install Update," telling me "An error occurred install iOS 9 Beta 1." Try, try and try again. After three increasingly nervous attempts at re-hitting "Install Now," the verification finally went through and my iPhone 6 restarted on its own. The install and restart took a full 19 minutes, leaving me in the all-too-familiar iOS update white screen limbo until it completed. Setup iOS 9http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/mobile_phones/iPhone/iOS%209/download-iOS-9/download-ios-9-beta-13-420-100.jpg You're almost there. Continue through the Update Completed menu, log into iCloud with your Apple ID, decide whether or not to share stats with app developers and you're done. There are many subtle new iOS 9 features that you won't see at first. This isn't a full blown refresh like iOS 7 was, and isn't as feature-rich as iOS 8. It's more about stability this time around. However, you will notice a big change to the Spotlight Search menu that lies to the left of the home screens, and you can enable new Siri suggestions, nearby attractions and news items. News is also a new app that needs to be set up, and it works almost exactly like Flipboard. You can select your favorite topics and publications and read news delivered in a stylish format. You can read all about the new iOS 9 features that are found within this beta or set to arrive in the final version alongside iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus. iOS 9 beta troubleshootinghttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/mobile_phones/iPhone/iOS%209/download-iOS-9/download-ios-9-beta-14-420-100.jpg There are a number of problems you may run into when installing the iOS 9 public beta. We ran into a number of them ourselves on both the iPhone and iPad. At first, Apple's servers took forever to deliver the install file. Downloading it on an iPhone during non-peak hours helped alleviate this problem. Failed verifications presented the same issue. Don't fret if the iOS 9 update takes up to a half hour to install and restart your device. You won't be able to use it at that time. That's all normal, too. What simply waiting a few minutes can't fix are the inevitable bugs you'll see with the iOS 9 public beta. A few app crashes and design glitches (see the search bar running into the top status bar). But that just define being an early adopter. Here's what to expect from iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/233194648244/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/480bb98b/sc/15/rc/1/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/233194648244/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/480bb98b/sc/15/rc/2/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/233194648244/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/480bb98b/sc/15/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/233194648244/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/480bb98b/sc/15/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/233194648244/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/480bb98b/sc/15/a2t.imghttp://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/480bb98b/sc/15/mf.gifhttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/QCpWi2lenKU
  8. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/How%20tos/backup-iphone-ipad/iphone-ipad-backup-how-to-470-75.jpgHow to backup your iPhone and iPadData loss is a fact of life - you drop your phone, it hits the ground, shatters to pieces, and chances are you lost the majority of your data on the device. Thankfully, we have services like iCloud that automatically backup your data, making it easily retrievable in the case of a shattered or damaged smartphone. Unfortunately, it isn't the best solution for backing up data, particularly because Apple just isn't the best when it comes to cloud services. Security is a big concern with iCloud, and if you ever want to get more storage, it's quite pricey compared to competitors. The company also gives you a mere 5GB of cloud storage that it's hardly possible to backup all of the pertinent data on your iOS device, especially if you have a large photo library full of special moments you want to keep. That said, there are plenty of other ways to make sure your data is safe by backing up your files across a few free services. The first step is, of course, making sure you have a backup of your device on your PC or MacBook. iTuneshttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/How%20tos/backup-iphone-ipad/ios-backup-itunes-photos-420-90.jpg To get started, plug your iPhone into your computer and open up iTunes. From there, select File > Devices > Transfer Purchases. This will save all of the content you've purchased via the App Store or iTunes Store on your computer. Wait for iTunes to finish transferring your purchases, and then select File > Devices > Backup. iTunes will begin backing up your device. Depending on how much data you're backing up, this could take some time. After it's finished, make sure it was a successful backup by heading into iTunes Preferences > Devices. You should see all of your backups with your device name and the date and time the process finished. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/How%20tos/backup-iphone-ipad/ios-backup-itunes-420-90.jpg Now you have a backup on your computer that you can always revert back to in the event of data loss. However, it's good to make sure that you have a copy or two of this backup sitting in the cloud somewhere. You never know when your computer could fail you, too. DriveGoogle Drive is a great place to backup a lot of content, mainly because of the 15GB of free storage you get with your Google account. That's more than enough to handle important documents along with a robust photo library. The first step is to download the Google Drive application for Windows or Mac. Since I'm primarily a Windows user at the moment, I'm using the Windows version, but it shouldn't be too hard to follow along if you're a Mac user. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/How%20tos/backup-iphone-ipad/ios-backup-hard-drive-420-90.jpg The second step is to run Google Drive. You don't need your phone plugged in since iTunes already backed up all of your files. It'll ask you to sign-in and then run you through a fairly short setup wizard. Follow the steps, and click "Done" once you're finished. Google Drive should now be on your computer and the Google Drive folder it created will automatically open via your native file explorer. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/How%20tos/backup-iphone-ipad/ios-backup-which-folder-420-90.jpg Google Drive isn't your traditional backup service, but it works just as well, mainly because of how simple it is to sync files. In your file explorer, head on over to: Users/Username/AppData/Roaming/Apple Computer/MobileSync/Backup Find your latest backup, right click it, press copy, select your Google Drive folder, and press paste. Your backup should now be uploading to Drive, and depending on internet speed and how big the backup file is, this could take some time. For Mac users, you'll want to go to: Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup Then just copy and paste the backup folder in your Google Drive folder, as instructed above. However, it could be a bit more complicated finding your backup. To get specifics on either Windows or Mac, open up iTunes and head on over to iTunes Preferences > Devices. Either Control click or right click the backup you want, and click Show in Folder or Finder. It should take you to the exact location where your backup is. Keep in mind that if you ever lose the backup on your computer, you can download your extra copy from Google Drive, but you'll need to make sure to put it in the exact same file location you got it from. Dropbox and iCloudGoogle Drive is a great option for those who need a lot of free storage, but if you aren't a heavy power user, Dropbox and iCloud are great places to keep your data. With Dropbox you only get 2GB of free storage for signing up, but setup is very similar to Google Drive since the two services work much the same. Head on over to Dropbox.com, sign-up for an account, and download the correct version for your operating system. It'll take you through the setup wizard, and once you're done, just like you did above, you can copy your backups and paste them in the Dropbox folder, putting it in the cloud. Dropbox certainly isn't for the power user, but it's a great place to keep a third backup if something were to ever happen to your other two options. And of course, even though iCloud isn't the best for keeping your device backed up, it's always good to have turned on, as it makes setting up a new device or restoring apps after a reset a seamless process. I just wouldn't put all of my faith in it to alone to house pertinent files. It's good to make sure you have various copies across services. To make sure you're set up with iCloud, unlock your device, head into Settings > iCloud, and ensure all of the apps, documents and data you want in the cloud are actively being backed up. For some apps, such as Notes and Mail, you'll need to create a free @icloud.com email address. HardwareIf you're really paranoid about losing data, even after you've put backups in the cloud, you can always go the traditional route and put backups on hardware, such as external hard drives and USB thumb drives. It works virtually the same way as putting your data on the cloud. Only, instead of pasting the backup in your Google Drive or Dropbox folder, you'll need to find your external hardware device in your file explorer and paste it in there. Preventive MeasuresIt's very rare that software bugs out and messes up your data, at least as far as integrated devices go. Most data loss actually happens due to hardware failure, human error, or people dropping their devices on the ground, shattering them. You can almost never avoid hardware failure, but there are ways to make sure your devices are protected against accidents. Apple's devices can be slippery, particularly with the company's latest rounded designs. That said, it's always best to have a case around your phone, and if you're worried about making sure your device stays "stylish," there are some great cases out there for iPhones and iPads. As a rule of thumb, it's good to make sure your devices aren't around water. If you're out on a boat this summer, throw your iPhone in a ziploc baggy and leave the tablet at home and enjoy the weather. If all else fails, there are ways to recover your data, but it's a lengthy process and requires a team of professionals. Not only that, it's also quite pricey. Most of the time, data recovery company DriveSavers can recover your data if your device is broken. They have one of the highest success rates in the industry and a quick turnaround time. Again, DriveSavers is quite pricey, but if you need some very sensitive data off of your iPhone or iPad, it might just be worth it to grab an estimate and make sure your files are backed up in various places next time. ConclusionThese days, data is massively important in our lives:we might be carrying around sensitive financial documents for businesses on our devices or it could be a timeless photo of your child in his or her infancy. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/How%20tos/backup-iphone-ipad/iphone-backup-how-to-420-90.jpg Either way, our data is just as important to us as physical items are, and they should be put away safely on the shelf, or in this case, in the cloud. What are some ways you keep your data safely backed up? http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/233194623277/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/480a8289/sc/28/rc/1/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/233194623277/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/480a8289/sc/28/rc/2/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/233194623277/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/480a8289/sc/28/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/233194623277/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/480a8289/sc/28/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/233194623277/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/480a8289/sc/28/a2t.imghttp://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/480a8289/sc/28/mf.gifhttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/EXs6jmkqViI
  9. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/MacLifeWebContent/HowtocleanclutteredMac/Ask-clutteredmac-main-470-75.jpgGot an Apple, Mac or iOS tech question? We have the answer. This time we take a look at some good options for helping you remove unwanted files from your Mac. It's not necessary for everyone, but if you want some help cleaning up your Mac, these apps will help you cut through the clutter. QuestionJust wondering - can you guys can tell me what program you would recommend to clean a cluttered Mac? AnswerFor the most part, Macs are pretty good at not leaving behind a lot of clutter, although when you uninstall or delete apps, you might want to double-check the Application Support and Cache folders in your Library folder for any lingering unwanted files. As such, cleaning programs probably aren't necessary for most users. However, if you want some extra help in tidying up your Mac, there are definitely a few programs that can help you get rid of unwanted/unneeded clutter. Here are three solid options, along with an explanation of what each does. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/HowtocleanclutteredMac/Ask-DaisyDisk-420-90.jpg • Daisy Disk: This app gives you a detailed overview of the files on your Mac, and can aid you in finding disk-hogging files and apps that could be removed. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/HowtocleanclutteredMac/Ask-Cleardisk-420-90.jpg • Clear Disk: Lets you easily clean and remove temporary files, redundant system files, and apps that you don't often use. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/HowtocleanclutteredMac/Ask-appzapper-420-90.jpg • App Zapper: This app lets you easily uninstall apps along with their system files at the same time. Just select the app you want to remove, and App Zapper does the rest. Got an Apple tech question? 10. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/software/Apple/Photos/Photos%201%20-470-75.jpgIntroductionFor the better part of a decade, iPhoto was arguably the cornerstone of Apple's successful suite of consumer creative iLife products. Many of us got in the habit of shooting our daily and family adventures, then manually syncing them to our Macs when we have a free moment. But times change. We now live in an age of ubiquitous cameras, always-available cloud photo libraries, and one-touch editing. With the meteoric success of iOS, Apple has elected to retire both iPhoto and "iPhoto Pro" (a.k.a., Aperture). It's no secret that iPhoto was getting bulky and slow, and the pro-centric Aperture has been eclipsed by its largest competitor, Adobe Lightroom. Both products have already been "sunset" and will receive no updates going forward. A successor now rises in their place that is both familiar and different — an all-new Mac edition of the Photos for iOS app, which over 700 million people (and counting) are quite familiar with. Over the following pages, we'll explain how the new Photos works and give you helpful tips. Quick look: the main Photos areahttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Features%202/computing%20how%20tos/how%20to%20use%20the%20new%20photos%20app/main-photos-area-420-90.JPG This should feel pretty familiar, whether you have previously used iPhoto or just about any similar app or service. It's all your photos (and videos), displayed in a simple grid. If you're using a Trackpad, you can pinch in and out to quickly resize the grid and see larger photos with more detail or more photos all at once. A. Sidebar: Here is where you can slice and dice your library. In fairly standard Apple practice, new Albums, Smart Albums, and Folders you create are listed here. This also displays any Shared Photo Stream albums you have created or joined. B. Smart Sidebar: Photos for Mac does quite a bit of library organization for you, automatically sorting some items into sections like Faces (Mac-only for now), Favorites, Panoramas, Videos, Slow-Mo, and more. Unlike albums you create, you cannot remove any of these sections. C. Toolbar: An app's toolbar is often your anchor, your home base for figuring out where you are and what you can do next. For iPhoto and Aperture users, the Photos for Mac toolbar is dramatically simplified. Only a couple options are visible while browsing photos and albums, and options to share and edit a photo appear only once you select or double-click, respectively. D. Editing: Click the Edit button at the right of the toolbar to craft a photo into your own image. A suite of tools, which iOS users should recognize, appears to the right of your photo as the app switches into an editing interface. This is where the magic happens. E. Search: What good are ever-expanding photo libraries without a way to search through them? Here you can zero in on just about anything, including metadata like locations and dates that is automatically captured when you shoot with an iPhone, as well as album names, Faces, and other information you add. Organizing your photoshttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Features%202/computing%20how%20tos/how%20to%20use%20the%20new%20photos%20app/2-create-an-album-420-90.JPG By default, and just like iOS, Photos for Mac punctuates your photos and videos using basic metadata of time and location (when available). Combine this with the new built-in sidebar categories, and many people will be happy with this level of automated organization. For the more adventurous, you can create albums to organize media for just about any purpose or topic you want. If that isn't enough, you can also use Smart Albums, a longtime staple of iPhoto, Aperture, and OS X itself, to automatically filter your library by criteria such as date, text in titles you add, and even the camera used. Of course, the fabric tying all Apple products together is iCloud, and it is a first-class citizen here with a custom feature name: iCloud Photo Library. If you enable this, your entire library will automatically sync between all devices as long as they're on Wi-Fi. Yes, even edits you make to photos will sync, as will your ability to revert a photo to its original form. If I have a complaint with the organizational features of Photos, it's that not all of them sync with iOS. You can create Smart Albums and organize Faces on Mac, but as of this writing, Apple's latest iOS doesn't see them. Our ever-expanding photo libraries sync to all devices now, but the smart tools we need sift through them do not. Also, out-of-the-box, Photos is woefully short on filters. I hope Apple allows third-party apps to add filter tools on Mac like they can on iOS. Step-by-step: get organizedhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Features%202/computing%20how%20tos/how%20to%20use%20the%20new%20photos%20app/2-create-an-album-420-90.JPG 1. Import Your Photos: Of course, you need to get your photos into Photos for Mac to do anything with them. If, like most people, you shoot everything with your iPhone, be sure to enable iCloud Photo library on all your devices for effortless sync. To manually import from a traditional camera, simply plug it in via USB to trigger the Photos for Mac import tool. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Features%202/computing%20how%20tos/how%20to%20use%20the%20new%20photos%20app/2-create-an-album-420-90.JPG 2. Create an Album: Use File > New Album to create a blank album in your sidebar, give it a name, and start dragging photos into it. Alternatively, if you hold Command or Shift to select multiple photos, then click File > New Album, all selected items will be automatically organized into that new album. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Features%202/computing%20how%20tos/how%20to%20use%20the%20new%20photos%20app/2-create-an-album-420-90.JPG 3. Get Smart: If you really want to start organizing, use File > New Smart Album to create a live, dynamic filter of your library. For example, you could combine criteria like "date" and "Face" to find all photos of yourself from that one time in your life and delete them to leave no evidence… or simply reminisce. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Features%202/computing%20how%20tos/how%20to%20use%20the%20new%20photos%20app/4-new-shared-album-420-90.JPG 4. New Shared Album: A great feature of Apple's new photo ecosystem is the option to share and even collaborate on an album with friends and family. Use File > Share > iCloud Photo Sharing to share media with people you invite (Apple devices required). You can even let others upload, making these handy for collaboration. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Features%202/computing%20how%20tos/how%20to%20use%20the%20new%20photos%20app/5-manage-info-and-keywords-420-90.JPG 6. Hide Photos: If you save images like Internet memes or screenshots on your iPhone, but don't want them cluttering your actual photography, Photos for Mac (and iOS) can hide them (Image > Hide Photo). If you put them in albums first, the photo will display in that album, but not in All Photos. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Features%202/computing%20how%20tos/how%20to%20use%20the%20new%20photos%20app/hide-photos-420-90.JPG Basic photo editingPhotos for Mac provides a nice, succinct set of editing tools to help most typical users polish their memories. iOS users should feel right at home with the handful of options — Enhance, Rotate, Crop, Filters, Adjust, Retouch, and Red-eye — but iPhoto and Aperture users shouldn't have any trouble picking them up. Like iPhoto, Aperture, and Photos for iOS, edits are non-destructive (you can undo them tomorrow or a year from now), and they even sync across devices if you use iCloud Photo Library. Crop a photo in Photos for Mac and add a filter for that extra style, and later you can revert back to the original from your iPhone or iPad. Yep, we live in the future. As I mentioned earlier, the Edit button won't appear in the upper-right until it's needed (the idea is that users don't need to see certain tools until they are in the right mode or it is necessary). But once you're editing, the entire interface shifts to accommodate. The sidebar automatically hides, the light, Yosemite-standard background turns to black, and the edit tools appear on the right; it's pretty difficult to miss that you have left "organization mode" and are now in a different task. Let's give some basic edits a try with a photo from Unsplash.com, a great photography project that regularly publishes beautiful photos which are free to use for anything you want. Step-by-step: edit your photoshttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Features%202/computing%20how%20tos/how%20to%20use%20the%20new%20photos%20app/6-time-to-edit-420-90.JPG 1. Time to Edit: To enter edit mode, find a photo in your library or download one from Unsplash.com (http://unsplash.com/) and drag it in (remember, all edits are non-destructive, so feel free to play around now and backtrack later). Double-click the photo to view it individually, then click Edit at the right of the toolbar. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Features%202/computing%20how%20tos/how%20to%20use%20the%20new%20photos%20app/2-one-click-fix-420-90.JPG 2. One-Click Fix: If your photo needs a quick boost, use the first tool, Enhance. It has no options or customization, but will assess your photo for things like white balance and color balance, then automatically tune it for sharing or posterity. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Features%202/computing%20how%20tos/how%20to%20use%20the%20new%20photos%20app/3-right-side-up-420-90.JPG 3. Right-Side Up: Sometimes a photo falls on its side, or your iPhone's rotation lock might have caused it to appear upside down. Use the Rotate tool to make it right. Bonus sub-tip: hold the Option key to switch the rotation direction. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Features%202/computing%20how%20tos/how%20to%20use%20the%20new%20photos%20app/3-right-side-up-420-90.JPG 4. Crop for Focus: Editing tools should appear on the right. Let's focus on a good part of the photo by clicking the Crop tool. Now click and drag the handles that appeared around your photo to move the most prominent person or object to the center, or perhaps near the lower left or right corner. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Features%202/computing%20how%20tos/how%20to%20use%20the%20new%20photos%20app/4-crop-for-focus-420-90.JPG 5. Add Some Style: Move back over to the toolset on the right and click Filters. Apple includes a handful, so you could try "Process" to add a dreamy state, or "Noir" for some mystery. When you're happy, click Done in the upper right to keep your new masterpiece. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Features%202/computing%20how%20tos/how%20to%20use%20the%20new%20photos%20app/5-add-some-style-420-90.JPG 6. Throw It All Away: But what if you didn't just create a masterpiece, and maybe even ruined a priceless family memory? No problem! Double-click the photo again to view it individually, then click the Edit button. See "Revert to Original" right next to Done? There's your ticket back to square one. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Features%202/computing%20how%20tos/how%20to%20use%20the%20new%20photos%20app/6-throw-it-away-420-90.JPG Advanced editing toolshttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Features%202/computing%20how%20tos/how%20to%20use%20the%20new%20photos%20app/advanced-editing-tools-420-90.JPG Despite its focus on the everyday customer with Photos for Mac, Apple packed in a number of advanced photo-editing tools that are easy to access if you want them, yet effortlessly avoidable if they just aren't for you. They surely aren't an end-all replacement for serious Aperture users or professionals, but they may be just what you need when it's time to move beyond a crop and a filter. In true Apple fashion, diving into the advanced editing tools feels deceptively simple. These tools live alongside the others we just tinkered with, at times adding an advanced feature to a core tool (like fine-grained rotate/leveling in Crop), and sometimes being collected in their own section like Adjust. As you might expect, these tools can all stack or combine their effects as you work (and yes, everything is still non-destructive if you have to start over, whether you decide right now or a year down the road). For example, if a photo's colors are all over the map, you can first crop it, then use a White Balance adjustment on the cropped area to better center its palette, then use a filter to add style, again on just the cropped portion. Let's roll up our sleeves and dig a little deeper. Step-by-step: Advanced editinghttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Features%202/computing%20how%20tos/how%20to%20use%20the%20new%20photos%20app/rotate-to-a-degree-420-90.JPG 1. Rotate to a Degree: You may have noticed that a degree meter appeared with the Crop tool, just to the right of your photo. Click and drag this to level your photo with fine control; this is great if you were off-balance when shooting or if you want to add some tension to a shot. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Features%202/computing%20how%20tos/how%20to%20use%20the%20new%20photos%20app/2-retouch-420-90.JPG 2. Retouch: Arguably one of the most "magical" tools, Retouch is a surprisingly accurate way to make many unwanted elements disappear. This is great for restoring aged, cracked family photos to glory or even, in this example, removing the boat and its passengers from view. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Features%202/computing%20how%20tos/how%20to%20use%20the%20new%20photos%20app/3-crop-to-a-standard-420-90.JPG 3. Crop to a Standard: If you are often cropping photos for a specific use or format — say, 5 x 7 inches for print or 16:9 for featured blog post images — look to the bottom of the Crop tool. Click the Aspect button for a bunch of size presets, or define your own dimensions. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Features%202/computing%20how%20tos/how%20to%20use%20the%20new%20photos%20app/4-split-view-420-90.JPG 4. Split View: If you're on an editing roll, use View > Show Split View to show a left sidebar of all photos in the currently selected album. This gives you a bird's-eye view of the other photos you can edit, and it's just one click to switch while staying in edit mode. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Features%202/computing%20how%20tos/how%20to%20use%20the%20new%20photos%20app/7-adjust-your-adjustments-420-90.JPG 5. Adjust: This is where you can take complete, manual control over enhancing your photos. Sliders offer fine-grained control over everything from color saturation to highlights and shallows, complete with clever thumbnail previews before you start sliding. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Features%202/computing%20how%20tos/how%20to%20use%20the%20new%20photos%20app/6-paste-adjustments-420-90.JPG 6. Paste Adjustments: When editing a similar group of photos and you get adjustments on one just the way you like, you can copy and paste it to all the others. Simply use Image > Copy Adjustments on the current photo, then Image > Paste Adjustments on the rest. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Features%202/computing%20how%20tos/how%20to%20use%20the%20new%20photos%20app/7-adjust-your-adjustments-420-90.JPG 7. Adjust Your Adjustments: You can add a broad array of tools to the default set. Click the Add button at the top of the Adjustments column — everything from a histogram, to noise reduction (for grainy photos), and even a Photoshop-ish levels panel can give you great control over your photos. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Features%202/computing%20how%20tos/how%20to%20use%20the%20new%20photos%20app/9-levels-420-90.JPG 8. Levels: Long hailed as one of the most useful photo-editing tools, a Levels tool is like going under the hood of the Light and Color adjustments. Levels allows you to adjust color and tone by hand, and to fix "flat" images by setting new black and white points. http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/233194572587/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4805025f/sc/28/rc/1/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/233194572587/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4805025f/sc/28/rc/2/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/233194572587/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4805025f/sc/28/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/233194572587/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4805025f/sc/28/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/233194572587/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4805025f/sc/28/a2t.imghttp://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/4805025f/sc/28/mf.gifhttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/w6Hi1_XAIeQ
  11. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/other/target-open-house-470-75.jpgTarget just announced the launch of Open House, an experimental new branch of its stores that sells nothing but connected home tech in San Francisco. The one-of-a-kind store is laid out to display the smart tech that, until now, hasn't had a proper showcase in the aisles of major electronics retailers. The store rocks a futuristic look with translucent walls that are backlit by LEDs to better show off the different products and how they each can work in tandem to connect your home. In a statement, Target chief creative officer Todd Waterbury elaborated on the challenges of creating a design layout specifically suited for smart home tech. "... We're trying to humanize and personalize the benefits of these products, as well as show them working in concert," Waterbury said. "It's really about relevant storytelling and creating a destination for engagement and discovery." The house that Target builtConsidering that these various smart devices can only show off their utility in your home, it makes sense that Open Space is built like one. Waterbury added that "putting a house in the space, we felt, was the most relatable and welcoming way to introduce these products." http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/other/target-open-house-brands-420-90.jpg Target's Open House is an experiment, but it's one that major connected home brands are eager to be a part of. From Nest and Sonos to Parrot, Withings and GE, the gang's all here. But how will the public react to the store? Target's chief of strategy and innovation, Casey Carl, is optimistic, having said that Target expects "huge value" to come of the store. However, Target was keen to point out that this is only a test. Carl went on to say that the company is "...using Open House to test the trend, both for us and for guests." But it doesn't have to be that way... With a few easy tricks and a couple of top tips you can be the master or mistress of mail, eliminating annoyances and reaching the famed state of Inbox Zero. In this article, we're going to look at how to achieve this in the two most popular email services, Gmail and Outlook. You might also want to read: 10 tips, tricks and secrets for GmailUse conversationshttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/TRBC/Miscellaneous/How%20to%20keep%20inbox%20tidy/outlookconversations-420-90.jpg This one's particularly important in the corporate world, where what should be fairly simple discussions can get bogged down in endless emails about nothing in particular. Both Outlook and Gmail enable you to view your emails in conversation mode, which means every message in a particular thread is collapsed underneath a single email title. To turn on conversation view in Gmail, click on the gear icon, select Settings and scroll down to Conversation View. Toggle the switch and save your changes. In Outlook, conversations are off by default. To enable them, click on View > Conversations > Show as Conversations. You can also change the settings here to specify how conversations should be displayed. In Outlook.com the conversation option is in Options > Group By Conversation and Pre-Load Messages. Filter the faff and filthhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/TRBC/Miscellaneous/How%20to%20keep%20inbox%20tidy/gmailfilters-420-90.jpg No matter how good your organisation's email filters, some spam is going to get through. Thankfully both Outlook and Gmail have some tools that can help you fight the spam menace (and on the desktop you can add more via plugins). In Gmail, the easiest way to filter unwanted messages is to use the drop-down in the message body and choose Filter Messages Like This. You can then specify what Gmail should do with messages that match the same criteria, such as email address or subject line. In Outlook, you want Mail > Home > Delete > Junk > Junk E-Mail Options, where you can adjust the level of filtering. If you want you can restrict incoming email to known senders only, although that isn't really practical in most offices. In Outlook.com, you can tap Actions > Create Rule to automatically delete unwanted messages. Get to grips with the good stuffhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/Review%20images/PC%20Plus/PCP%20300/PCP300.helpdesk.categories-420-90.jpg Filters and rules aren't just for messages you don't want. They can be useful tools for organising the mail you do want, too. For example, you might create Outlook rules that colour-code messages so you can gauge their importance immediately, or you might create a rule or filter that gives certain messages a category and files them accordingly so you can worry about them later. Such rules and filters are also a good way of keeping legitimate messages out of your spam filter, or of forwarding messages that aren't your department, and it's easy to create very complex rules – so for example you can have different outcomes based on whether incoming messages have file attachments or include certain words. Unsubscribe from everythinghttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/TRBC/Miscellaneous/How%20to%20keep%20inbox%20tidy/unrollme-420-90.jpg Over time, there's a good chance you'll end up subscribed to all kinds of things – often without asking. That's where the superb Unroll.me website comes in. It works with Gmail and Outlook.com (as well as Hotmail, AOL Mail and iCloud), and it can do two handy things: it can roll all your subscription emails into a regular digest, keeping your inbox tidy, or it can automatically unsubscribe you from mailing lists you don't want. We used the latter option and discovered we'd been subscribed to more than 200 mailing lists we didn't want to be on. It's a fantastic tool. Use aliaseshttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/TRBC/Miscellaneous/How%20to%20keep%20inbox%20tidy/outlookalias-420-90.jpg Aliases – having multiple email addresses for the same account – are a great way to categorise incoming email, and they're handy weapons in the war against spam too. In Outlook.com you can add additional Outlook.com email addresses to your existing account, while in Gmail you can add anything after the first part of your email provided you do it with a plus sign – so for example karen.smith+notes@gmail.com would go to karen.smith@gmail.com. You can then set rules or filters to look for your aliases and process them accordingly, for example by sending them straight to your spam folder. Set up Quick Stepshttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/TRBC/Miscellaneous/How%20to%20keep%20inbox%20tidy/outlookquicksteps-420-90.jpg This one's Outlook-only – in addition to Rules, Outlook has Quick Steps to help you organise your inbox. The difference between Quick Steps and Rules is that the former are run manually while the latter are automatic. A Quick Step is a fast way of applying multiple actions to a message or group of messages, and Outlook comes with predefined ones such as Move to Folder or Reply & Delete. By creating a Quick Step and adding it to your Quick Access toolbar (under the lightning bolt icon) you can turn many email processing jobs into one-click efforts. Create canned responseshttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/TRBC/Miscellaneous/How%20to%20keep%20inbox%20tidy/cannedresponses-420-90.jpg You'll often find yourself essentially writing the same message again and again to multiple people, so why not automate it? Outlook's Quick Parts are a blessing here: create an email, write the bit you don't want to write ever again, then click on Insert > Quick Parts > Save Selection to Quick Part Gallery. The next time you need to send that message, put the cursor in the body of the message and click Insert > Quick Parts and then select your canned response. The process is similar in Gmail but you need to go to Settings > Labs and look for the Canned Responses option. Click Enable to turn it on. Use Autocorrecthttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/TRBC/Miscellaneous/How%20to%20keep%20inbox%20tidy/chromeflags-420-90.jpg Canned responses can be overkill for a lot of messages, but there's another way to speed up your email composition and replies. One massive time-saver is to use autocorrect as a form of shorthand, so for example you could replace a long email address with "eml", a postal address with "addr" or a sign-off with "regrd" so the full text magically appears when you type the correct command. In Outlook, you can define your Autocorrect entries in File > Options > Proofing > Mail > Spelling and Autocorrect. For Gmail you'll need to do it at the operating system level using a third-party app, or via a Chrome flag: type chrome://flags in the address bar and look for Enable Automatic Spelling Correction. Use task listshttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/TRBC/Miscellaneous/How%20to%20keep%20inbox%20tidy/outlookflags-420-90.jpg One of the most practical ways to manage your email is to use to-do lists – flagging a message for future action is only useful if you remember to come back to it, and to-do lists are a great way of ensuring that you do. In Outlook you can flag an email message for follow-up by right-clicking the flag icon and setting a reminder time, or you can drag the message to the To-Do Bar to create a to-do item. In Gmail, click on Gmail > Tasks to bring up the Tasks List. To add a mail message to it, click on the message's More drop-down and select Create Event. This adds the event you create to your Calendar. Do it nowhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/TRBC/Miscellaneous/How%20to%20keep%20inbox%20tidy/emptyinbox-420-90.jpg One school of thought says you should only ever read a message in your inbox once: if you just let it sit there, you aren't organising your email effectively enough. Instead, you should take immediate action – delete it if it's irrelevant, delegate it if it's someone else's job, archive if you don't need to do anything or flag it to come back to later. The end result of that should be the much-vaunted Inbox Zero – or at least it will be until someone emails you and spoils it. The method does work, but it's best suited to infrequent raids on your inbox – if you attempt to process every email as soon as it arrives, you'll find it hard to get anything else done. http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/233194540181/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4801e95d/sc/15/rc/1/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/233194540181/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4801e95d/sc/15/rc/2/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/233194540181/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4801e95d/sc/15/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/233194540181/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4801e95d/sc/15/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/233194540181/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4801e95d/sc/15/a2t.imghttp://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/4801e95d/sc/15/mf.gifhttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/_KKxY24SaqQ
  13. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/events/Microsoft%20Build%202015/screen%20grabs/windows-10-laptop-470-75.jpgIntroduction and consumer productsThe direction that Microsoft is taking as a company under the stewardship of Satya Nadella is just becoming visible. After almost a year and a half in the role, Nadella has changed the focus of one of the world's largest corporations from the ground up, altering its product lines and changing the corporate atmosphere from one of cautiousness and conformity to one that is starting to sound fearless in terms of bold changes, tearing up entire product ranges to focus on new areas. Examples of this came early on in Nadella's tenure with Office for iPad which had been under development within Microsoft for many years under Steve Ballmer but was only released in 2014. While this may not seem significant, it signalled a shift from attempting to lock users into the Office ecosystem by exclusivity to an approach that fosters inclusivity, allowing millions more users of Office even though they were not using Windows specifically. Onwards and upwards But that was last year and it would seem the push is continuing as Microsoft moves to cut away various consumer-facing services, many of which are failing. Last week Microsoft announced that it has sold off some of the technology behind Bing Maps, along with 200 staff, to Uber, the taxi company. On a micro scale the deal makes sense – Microsoft has never really been a serious player within mapping and Uber obviously has plans to expand; two birds, one stone – but when viewed on a macro scale it shows that under Nadella Microsoft is now willing to make the kind of cuts that would have been unthinkable only a few years ago, shedding technology that it no longer has a use for so that it can focus on other things. On top of this Microsoft also struck a deal with AOL that relinquishes its display ads business on various platforms, an area where the company has traditionally lagged behind Google and Facebook. By handing over the services to AOL, Microsoft sheds 1,200 employees and no longer has to focus on an area in which they were not innovating to a level that Nadella expected. In simplistic terms, the war for Microsoft to compete with Google on all fronts is now over, symbolised by the departure of Mark Penn, the man responsible for the "Scroogled" adverts. Curtains for the consumer?Analyst Ben Thompson of the Stratechery blog succinctly noted that "this is the official end of Microsoft as a consumer company" as Redmond moves towards its new mission: "cloud first, mobile first". This analysis is perhaps extreme, as Thompson himself admitted in a subsequent blog post, but broadly Microsoft has been making moves to leave the consumer space, at least in terms of non-operating system areas. Windows is still, and will likely remain for a long while, the most used consumer operating system around, especially on PCs, but the core missions of Microsoft have strayed to include such a broad array of consumer-focused areas that the company has become confused. In an interview, Apple CEO Tim Cook described Apple's intense focus, highlighting the fact that the entire product portfolio of Apple can be laid on a single table. The two companies make different products but the theoretical perspective remains: Apple is focused while Microsoft tries to operate everywhere, hoping something sticks. By selling off various assets the company benefits hugely in terms of profit – both deals were of an undisclosed value but the figure was likely large – and in terms of focus, allowing Microsoft to realise its "cloud first, mobile first" aims. Windows Phone and XboxAnother point of consideration is Windows Phone, one of the only areas where Microsoft is primarily focused on consumer with very little enterprise influence or input. Thompson posits that Windows Phone, alongside the Surface line, is a sort of public research and development effort. "Windows Phone and Surface are little more than glorified R&D projects seeking to keep the company relevant in hardware while they pursue the next big thing," says Thompson. The Next Big Thing, of course, will likely be HoloLens and Microsoft has been playing this up massively, dedicating the past three big events to the exposition of the product. It's unclear as yet what the final hardware of HoloLens will look like, especially with regard to the internals, but Redmond seems to finally be anticipating what a version of the future could look like. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/Wearables/Microsoft/HoloLens/Press/hololens-review-420-100.jpg Xbox spin-offOne of the other pieces of the puzzle Nadella is trying to complete is Xbox, the wildly popular gaming division of the company that has, for years, been a target for analysts who claim it should be spun off into its own company. If this were to happen, and it may well, then both companies would likely see the benefits of independence as they would be able to focus on what they do best without the distraction of bureaucracy (for Xbox) and a niche consumer product (for Microsoft). Of course, speculation about a breakup comes with caveats: Xbox has become far more integral to Windows 10 and Microsoft's recent purchase of Mojang, the developer behind Minecraft, shows that there is a commitment to gaming, even if it doesn't fit with the current wider picture. Bold as brassThe new direction of Microsoft is, above all else, bold. Whether it is correct remains to be seen. Windows 10 hasn't been launched just yet but the previews, available to 'insiders,' appear to be taking criticism constructively. It is refreshing to see Nadella moving in a new direction, decisively cutting areas that are no longer relevant to the company at large rather than persisting for little reward, examples of which are almost entirely focused around Microsoft's online efforts. Whether we are seeing the start of a move away from the consumer side of the company's product offerings remains to be seen, but this could also be a house-keeping episode designed to help Microsoft compete moving forward, focusing on what matters. Sweeping changes at Microsoft: Nadella's vision is in full effect http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/233194526977/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/480017c0/sc/23/rc/1/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/233194526977/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/480017c0/sc/23/rc/2/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/233194526977/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/480017c0/sc/23/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/233194526977/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/480017c0/sc/23/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/233194526977/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/480017c0/sc/23/a2t.imghttp://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/480017c0/sc/23/mf.gifhttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/4smvtyFcdmM

Pandora's personalised radio stations will be available on vehicles with Toyota Link, so the days of listening to rubbish radio while you RAV4 your engine will be well and truly behind you. Using your smartphone's data connection, you can listen to many more than 86 (technically up to 100) different personalised radio stations, with controls replicated on the car's in-dash head unit. Yaris, the Prius is rightThe Hilux of this new system is that it will work from the moment your smartphone is paired to your stereo over Bluetooth, helping to Camry your musical tastes with you with a minimum of effort. While Pandora has been integrated into plenty of other manufacturer's cars before now, this will help expand the Pandora footprint much further as Toyota is Australia's highest selling car brand. But really, this news still only does a little to lessen the news that Toyota is avoiding CarPlay and Android Auto for now. http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/233194621881/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/48086406/sc/23/rc/1/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/233194621881/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/48086406/sc/23/rc/2/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/233194621881/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/48086406/sc/23/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/233194621881/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/48086406/sc/23/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/233194621881/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/48086406/sc/23/a2t.imghttp://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/48086406/sc/23/mf.gifhttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/adXB3vPH2gM
  15. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/broadcast/Hulu/hulu-470-75.jpgHow to use Getflix to bypass geoblockinghttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/broadcast/Hulu/hulu-420-90.jpg We've talked previously about VPNs – largely because they're good for what ails you. They keep you anonymous, add extra security, and – most importantly for many users – they hide your location so you can access geo-blocked services like Hulu, BBC and the US edition of Netflix. If all you want is the latter, however, a full VPN service might be a bit much. They can be difficult to share across multiple devices, can slow your connection down for things for which you don't need the VPN and can be a little too much money every month on top of your regular ISP bill. Smart DNShttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/How%20tos/Getflix/Smart%20DNS-420-90.jpg Enter the "smart" DNS service. There are only a handful of such services, the best known being Unblock-Us and Getflix. Where a VPN routes all your data through the VPN connection, these services use a different technique to bypass the blockades. What they do is provide you with a special DNS (domain name service) number that you can use in lieu of the DNS number your ISP provides. For the vast majority of sites, it works just like any other DNS service. But for a number of content sites, the DNS server gives the address of a proxy server run by the smart DNS provider, rather than the real site. For instance, if you go to Netflix.com, instead of telling you the real IP address of Netflix.com, the smart DNS will tell you the IP address of a Netflix proxy run by the DNS provider. Since you're accessing Netflix by way of a US-server, you don't get geo-blocked. The advantage of this model is that it's much easier to configure it for all your devices than a VPN is. A simple change in your router settings is all you really need, as opposed to complicated network connection sharing shenanigans required by VPNs. It will work for your consoles, mobiles, media players and PCs. It's also cheaper than a full VPN, and doesn't slow your data down by routing unnecessary data through a VPN. Signing uphttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/How%20tos/Getflix/signing%20up-420-90.jpg There are essentially two parts to setting up a smart DNS service. The first is signing up for the service; the second is configuring your devices. We'll walk you through the Getflix process; the Unblock-Us process is very similar. The first thing you need to do is sign-up. Head to Getflix and create an account. It has a 14-day free trial available, and costs $4 per month after that. Once you've set up your account and logged in, you'll be taken to the Getflix dashboard. It's a good idea to bookmark this page. For Getflix to work, you need your current IP address registered with them. If your IP address changes (which likely happens whenever your router reboots), you need to come back here to register. DDNShttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/How%20tos/Getflix/DDNS-420-90.jpg It's actually a really good idea to have a DDNS service set up. You can register your DDNS domain with Getflix by clicking on IP Address on the left hand panel and entering your DDNS address in the Dynamic DNS field. This way, you don't have to worry about updating your IP address registration; it will be done for you automatically. Configuring your routerhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/How%20tos/Getflix/configuring%20your%20router-420-90.jpg This is where the genius of the smart DNS service kicks in. If you use automatic network settings (known as DHCP) for devices on your network, they will automatically take the lead from your router when it comes to DNS settings. So to get it to work for all your devices, you just need to change your router's DNS configuration and that will propagate to any device that connects to your network. You can also configure the DNS of devices manually if you like, but for most people a one-and-done router configuration is the way to go. Unfortunately, as we often find when talking about routers, the different manufacturers are totally inconsistent with respect to where the DNS settings are found. You'll need to log into your router's configuration and find the DNS settings: - On Linksys routers, they're found on the main Basic Setup page under DHCP Server Setting (it's the Static DNS fields). - On an iiNet BoB, it's under System->DNS. - On D-Link, click on Manual Internet Connection Setup and change only the DNS server fields. - On most Asus routers, click on WAN, head to WAN DNS settings and uncheck the automatic settings. - On Netgear, click on Basic Settings on the left, then Use these DNS servers. - On TP-Link, click on DHCP in the left hand panel, then on DHCP Settings. The goal is to manually enter DNS values for you router. The DNS number you enter depends on your location: if you're in or near Sydney type in 54.252.183.4; Melbourne is 168.1.79.229; Perth 202.59.96.140; Auckland 120.138.27.84. Although there might be several DNS fields, you only need to fill in one. (Note: If you go with Unblock-Us, its DNS servers are 111.118.175.56 primary and 118.127.33.48 secondary). Finished!http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/How%20tos/Getflix/finished-420-90.jpg Now you should be good to use the services that Getflix supports – including Netflix, Hulu, BBC iPlayer and many others. You can access them on all your devices (assuming the devices use automatic Internet configuration) – your consoles, mobiles and media players should just work with the Netflix and other apps. You may need to reboot some devices to get them to update.
  16. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/software/Browser%20cache/major-browsers-470-75.jpgHow to clear cache in Chrome, Firefox and SafariAfter seeing one too many infomercials, just about everyone is of the thought that cache is evil and is the sole reason behind their computer's recent slow down. But cache really doesn't deserve the bad reputation it has with many computer users. Believe it or not, cache's reason for being is to speed things up. Instead of processing tasks, like opening a webpage, from square one each and every time, a chunk of information called cache is created, like an earmark in a book, except on your hard drive. That way, your machine is always at the ready to visit the sites you like to visit and making those run the fastest. While cache may have a somewhat exaggerated bad rep, there are benefits to clearing it on occasion. Cache is your friend, and while clearing it won't necessarily help your computer perform much faster, it also won't hurt. At worst, your computer will diligently rebuild any cache you wiped out that you shouldn't have. So, what's the point of clearing your cache? It has its perks if you're working with sensitive information that you'd like to wipe out. Clearing it can also be used as an effort to fix any nagging performance problems with scripts that you're experiencing online. Lastly, if you really love that "New PC" smell, clearing the cache at least offers peace of mind that your stuff is clutter-free. Here are a few different ways to clear out your system's cache. How to clear your cache in Google ChromeTo clear out the cache created in Google Chrome, the process is simple, fast and essentially the same on both PC and Mac computers. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Browser%20cache/chrome-settings-hover-420-90.jpg First, navigate to the Settings menu. You'll find it within Chrome's menu, which is wedged next to the address bar at the top right corner of the screen. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Browser%20cache/inside-chrome-settings-420-90.jpg Once you click Settings, a new tab will open up within the browser, offering a view of all the options you can tweak. Don't be intimidated, we're only after a few things in particular here. Head all the way at the bottom and click Show advanced settings… http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Browser%20cache/chrome-privacy-settings-420-90.jpg Once you click here, a ton of new options will open up at the bottom of this tab. You should see the word "Privacy," indicating you're in the right place. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Browser%20cache/chrome-content-settings-420-90.jpg From here, you have a few options. Clicking Content Settings opens up a new window that gives you some flexibility in how you can moderate or delete Chrome's browser cache. You can elect to keep stored data until you manually choose to delete it later, or you can have Chrome automatically toss it all when you close it. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Browser%20cache/chrome-clear-browsing-data-420-90.jpg Backing out of Content Settings and exploring the option next to it, Clear browsing data…, gives us another way of clearing out the data stored in the browser and, by extension, your hard drive. It's totally up to you as to what gets the boot and what stays in your cache. You can even choose how far back in time you'd like to erase the cache items from. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Browser%20cache/chrome-cookies-allow-420-90.jpg Websites install cookies in your browser's cache, which are like handshakes between your machine and that site in particular. If you're choosy, like me, you'll want to manually pick and choose which cookies you keep and the ones you eliminate. Chrome makes it easy with allowances. Just add your favorite sites and Chrome will keep cookies on hand to make those pages load extra fast. Not a Google Chrome user? Next up is Firefox. How to clear your cache on FirefoxSimilar to Google Chrome, Firefox makes it easy enough to clear out pesky cache from your machine. To navigate to the Preferences menu, click into the menu button that's right next to the web address bar and there you'll find it. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Browser%20cache/firefox-settings-hover-420-90.jpg Once the Preferences menu pops up, click over to the burlesque mask, which playfully represents the Privacy category. Here, you'll want to switch Remember history to Use custom settings for history so that you can adjust various cache-related settings. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Browser%20cache/firefox-use-custom-420-90.jpg Several new options open up, which give you better control over the cache stored on your system. Set to its most aggressive cache-disposing behavior, Firefox can ditch anything stored in the browser every time you close it. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Browser%20cache/firefox-detailed-privacy-420-90.jpg Inside the Privacy menu, clicking the Settings button opens up more options that let you more of a micro-level grasp on your data. Oh, you don't use Firefox or Google Chrome? Next up is Apple's Safari browser. How to clear your cache on SafariApple's Mac-exclusive Safari browser offers the standard offering of ways to eliminate cache from your system. Unlike the other popular browser options, it also provides some appreciated shortcuts to these settings. To get started, click "Safari" in the upper left corner and select Preferences. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Browser%20cache/safari-preferences-hover-420-90.jpg A new window containing the browser's settings will pop open that looks very familiar to the settings in Firefox. From here, you can navigate over to the Privacy category, represented by a mysterious figure shrouded in darkness. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Browser%20cache/safari-privacy-menu-420-90.jpg Once you click it, you can hit Remove All Website Data… to get rid of everything stored on your computer. This is the easiest way to clear cache on Safari, but you can also drill down and customize your cache storage preferences. We can't tell you what to do, but if you're looking to wipe out as much cache as possible, click into the Details button to manage exactly which sites are taking up space on your machine. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Browser%20cache/safari-reset-safari-button-420-90.jpg Lastly, users can quickly get rid of all the data stored into the Safari browser by clicking into Safari in the top left corner. From there, click Reset Safari… and then check off each item you'd like to eliminate. You're all set! Your cache should now be gone. If you aren't seeing huge performance gains, don't sweat it. You've definitely helped your computer out in a few meaningful ways. The first thing you should notice is that the sites that used to crashed your browser or slowed it down to a crawl will work better now. Also, clearing out the cache from webpages you don't visit frequently puts some precious hard drive space back in your hands, which can be used for extra music, games or movies. http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/233194510551/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/47fc23c8/sc/15/rc/1/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/233194510551/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/47fc23c8/sc/15/rc/2/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/233194510551/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/47fc23c8/sc/15/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/233194510551/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/47fc23c8/sc/15/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/233194510551/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/47fc23c8/sc/15/a2t.imghttp://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/47fc23c8/sc/15/mf.gifhttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/iGNS24eLU6E

The public beta just went live on Apple's Beta Software Program website shortly ago. While El Capitan does not bring the spanning visual changes Yosemite and Mavericks wrought, this latest version of Mac OS X cleans up and makes the desktop experience much more efficient. For starter, users can finally snap windows to one side of the screen with Split View. Meanwhile, Spaces Bar revamps multi-desktop management that's more focused on dragging around windows. Finally, Metal adds an improved graphics core for gaming on Macs and MacBooks. As with any beta, don't be surprised to find that some programs don't work as they did on Mavericks or at all in certain cases. It's also a good idea to back up your current system or load the beta operating system onto a partition. Apple has yet to announce an official release date for OS X El Capitan but it should arrive in October, given that OS X 10.09 Mavericks and OS X 10.10 Yosemite originally arrived in that same month. 18. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/TRBC/office-2016-for-mac-470-75.jpgMicrosoft has introduced Office 2016 for Mac, five years after the last Office for Mac rolled out from Redmond. A lot has changed from then in the world of technology which might explain why Mac users, not Windows ones, get the freshest version of Office first. In a briefing, a Microsoft spokesperson explained that it was important to release it first to show that Mac users still count for the company as it clearly demonstrated by launching iOS (and Android) versions of Office Mobile for them first. The announcement today brings all the expected key features of Office to Mac users with new versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and Outlook tweaked for Mac devices to make optimal use of Full Screen view, Multi-Touch and Retina display. Largest Office for Mac beta everMore than 100,000 pieces of feedback have been submitted by the thousands of users that enrolled on the Office for Mac preview program, providing feedback over four months and seven updates. Microsoft said that they will be providing release updates and new features for Office 365 customers – including Office for Mac users – at least once per quarter. Note that Office 2016 for Mac is currently available for Office 365 users only. Depending on which version they have, they will be able to download Office 2016 for Mac by going to their account and choosing the appropriate options. Those looking for a perpetual, one-time purchase option, will have to wait till September 2015 to purchase it online or off the shelf. 19. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/software/Microsoft/Windows%2010/hands%20on/10074/10074%20(8)-470-75.jpgExcited Microsoft fans anticipating the release of Windows 10 finally have an estimated free upgrade timespan thanks to a presentation quietly eked out by the Redmond-based firm. Working under the "supported lifetime of the device" mantra that it first mentioned in January, a presentation noticed by Computerworld explained that users of devices will get free upgrades for the first two to four years of each device's lifespan. "Revenue allocated is deferred and recognised on a straight-line basis over the estimated period the software upgrades are expected to be provided by estimated device life," explained one slide. "[The estimated device life] can range from two to four years." Across that lifetime, users will get an OS that is kept "current" over the supported lifetime and Microsoft called it "Windows as a Service — continuous updates over time". The timeframe given still isn't hugely accurate given that it has a variation of two years and the same PowerPoint explained that the support timeframe will be calculated by "customer type" and not by "form factor," which was the line it took in May. Enterprise get longer than consumersWhat this is likely to mean is that consumers, who typically want the newest and freshest features faster than enterprises, will be at the lower end of the timeframe whereas the enterprise customers will occupy the higher end. Windows 10 is set for its big unveil on July 29 with the release likely to define Microsoft's path for the coming months and years. As a result, predictive sales analytics usage will increase 135% over the next year and a half, according to a new report from Salesforce.com. The report, which surveyed more than 2,300 sales executives worldwide, found that organizations that are performing above expectations are 3.5 times more likely to use sales analytics than organizations that self-identify as underperforming. One of the reasons a gulf has emerged between successful teams and struggling teams is mobile sales technology. The report reveals that successful organizations are five times more likely to rate their mobile sales capabilities as outstanding or very good, and 60% of these teams use or are planning to use a mobile sales application. The harsh realityConversely, only 9% of underperforming teams use mobile apps in their sales processes. In general, self-identifying high-performing sales teams are more than twice as likely to be heavy tech adopters than moderate and under-performing teams, according to the report. For organizations that are struggling to accept the technologization of sales, a new, more complex reality is emerging. Not only are smartphones and tablets taking over the sales process, but 83% of all sales teams are currently using or planning to use wearables in some form in the next two years. A grain of saltObviously, as one of the leading providers of sales applications, the findings of this report butter Salesforce’s bread. In the past year, Salesforce has been an aggressive proponent of sales apps for wearable devices. The San Francisco-based CRM giant has worked with Apple to design apps for the Apple Watch in order to provide sales teams with access to glanceable information and notifications. Salesforce launched the Salesforce Wave and Salesforce1 apps for Apple Watch along with a new SDK for partners to create their own wearable apps. So, it should come as no surprise that Salesforce is responsible for a report that sounds the alarm for the technologization of sales. Despite this obvious bias, it’s pretty much a no-brainer that access to customers, teammates and data across multiple portable devices is beneficial to all businesses. Over 20,000 pages and more than 10 million words (no, we did not count them all) dedicated to promoting and celebrating free and open source software, alongside that ever smiling penguin we all know and love. To help see how things have (or perhaps haven't) changed since May 2000, we've created not one but two special PDFs; one is of the original Linux Format issue 1 and the other is the original preview issue called Linux Answers, which was printed at the end of 1999. PCs were different beasts then and Linux was coming out of its embryonic days. Looking back it's a fascinating time with Mandrake Linux and Corel Linux riding high, while names like Ubuntu and Mint didn't even exist. It's also interesting to see how core distros like Debian, SuSE and Red Hat survived, as did core projects like GIMP and Apache, while other fell by the wayside. Pondering on the future It's also amazing how similar the magazine is 200 issues on. We're still covering the same type of tutorials, roundups, reviews and coding guides. But then people's need to develop their knowledge and skills remains the same today as it did then. Instead of installing Definite Linux and connecting to AppleTalk networks, we're installing Debian 8, testing Fedora 22, playing with the kernel 4.0, reviewing the Astro Pi and configuring IPv6 networks. GNU/Linux and the whole area of open source is as exciting now as it was then, but Linux Format would be nothing without the Linux community and our loyal readers old, new and the many longstanding diehards. So from the team here at Linux Format Towers have a heartfelt thank you and here's hoping for another 200 issues. Buy Linux Format 200 in-store and online now! 22. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/software/Serif/Affinity%20Photo/Beta%20review%20screenshots/affinity-photo-05-470-75.jpgSerif is best-know for its budget Windows image-editing, illustration, web design and layout tools. Its brand new Affinity range, though, is designed solely for Macs and aimed squarely at professionals. Affinity Designer, Serif's brand new professional graphic design and illustration tool, was the first Affinity product to arrive in October 2014, and scored a Mac App Store 'Best of 2014' in the process. Affinity Photo, announced in February 2015, uses the same core processing engine and aims to do for image-editing what Affinity Designer has done for illustration and vector art. Professional featuresMany so-called Photoshop rivals are actually much more basic consumer-orientated editing tools aimed at people who don't really know any better, but Affinity Photo is the real deal. It offers key tools and technologies essential in a professional environment, including 16-bit editing, RGB, CMYK and LAB color modes, ICC colour profiles and RAW development. It can also import and export Photoshop PSD files. Its layout and operation is similar to Photoshop's, with a clean and simple vertical tools panel on the left of the screen and stacked (detachable) palettes on the right. It takes some acclimatization after Photoshop, but the basic principles of layers, masks, selections and adjustment tools are the same. The difference lies in Serif's processing engine, which has been designed to exploit the full potential of today's 16-bit hardware with fast, real-time adjustments that show changes 'live' as you work so that you don't have to close a dialog first or wait for the image to redraw between fine adjustments. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Serif/Affinity%20Photo/Beta%20review%20screenshots/affinity-photo-hero-420-90.jpg Read: Serif Affinity Photo hands on review The low price may pitch Affinity Photo in with a whole bunch of other Photoshop wanabees, but it's a very different, much more powerful product that just happens to be cheap – how often does that happen? Affinity Photo is being sold on the Mac App Store at an introductory price of £29.99/US$39.99 until July 23rd 2015. After that it reverts to its regular price of £39.99/US$49.99. Its introductory price makes it less than one third of the cost of a one-year subscription to Adobe's Photography Plan. The Adobe plan does include both Photoshop and Lightroom, but not every photographer will want to use both, and many still resist the idea of paying subscriptions to 'rent' an application. Affinity Photo is an alternative that combines the latest software technology with a classic one-off payment model. http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/233194477495/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/47f82f9d/sc/28/rc/1/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/233194477495/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/47f82f9d/sc/28/rc/2/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/233194477495/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/47f82f9d/sc/28/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/233194477495/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/47f82f9d/sc/28/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/233194477495/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/47f82f9d/sc/28/a2t.imghttp://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/47f82f9d/sc/28/mf.gifhttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/akA51TXYGNY
  23. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/MacLifeWebContent/AppleMusicTips/apple_music_tips-470-75.jpgMaster Apple Musichttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/AppleMusicTips/apple_music_tips-420-90.jpg Unless you have something against oodles of free music, you probably signed up for the Apple Music trial last week. Even if you have no plans on ever actually paying, you can still stream for the rest of the summer, which is more than enough time to get closely acquainted with Apple's new service. And that's good, because there's a lot to absorb. Whether you're coming from iTunes Radio, Spotify, or Beats Music, Apple has made its music service unique (some might say confusing) enough to require a bit steeper of a learning curve than the usual Apple product. But after using it for the past week, we've unearthed some tips and tricks that will help you listen like a pro. Find fantastic playlistshttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/AppleMusicTips/1-playlist-420-90.jpg Apple has curated dozens of playlists spanning all sorts of genres and activities, from one-hit wonders and chart-topping sensations to graduation tunes and motivational workout jams. But finding them isn't so easy. Apple spotlights a smattering of them on its For You and New home screens, but if none of them strike your fancy, you can easily search for more. Just type the word "curator" or "playlist" into the search field and you'll see a lengthy list of what's available. And if you want something specific, you can filter by genre too. Make a mixhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/AppleMusicTips/2-makemix-420-90.jpg When you tap the ellipses at the end of a song, artist or album, you'll get a menu of options that let you add it to a playlist, buy it in the iTunes Store or share it on Twitter or Facebook. But if you want to make a quick mix of songs that don't rise to the level of a playlist, you can queue them up by selecting "Add to Up Next." You'll find the songs you've selected by tapping the list icon in the full-screen Now Playing window (drag up on the small bar at the bottom of the screen), where they can be rearranged, changed, and deleted - just like if you were a real DJ. Find other songs by an artisthttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/AppleMusicTips/3-othersongs-420-90.jpg If you're listening to a song on Beats 1 or other radio station and you want to see what else the artist has recorded, you can either tap the magnifying glass and search their name, or you can use the more-convenient ellipses menu. While you won't see a option for "Find More Music by This Artist," you can tap the song title at the top of the expanded menu to jump right to the artist page. Change your musical tasteshttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/AppleMusicTips/4-changetastes-420-90.jpg When you first sign up for the Apple Music trial, you'll be met with a series of red balls representing your musical tastes, which Apple's curators and algorithms use to generate the content on your For You page. But if you hastily zipped through it the first time around or are just unhappy with the recommendations you're getting, you can fine-tune your selections. Just click on the account icon in the left corner and head to the Choose Artists For You tab. Inside you can refine, expand and reset your selections. More personalizationhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/AppleMusicTips/5-foryou-420-90.jpg Speaking of For You, the red bubbles are just part of the personalization process. Liking a song by tapping the heart icon will affect what's displayed (though skipping does not), and tapping and holding on a suggested album or playlist lets you tell Apple Music that you don't like the selection. Disconnect from Connecthttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/AppleMusicTips/6-unconnect-420-90.jpg Connect is one the main features of Apple Music, but if you're not feeling it, Apple has given you a secret way to turn it off. You'll find the toggle hiding in the Settings app. Head over to Restrictions in the General tab and turn it on (it'll prompt you to create a unique passcode). Then you'll be able to switch Connect off, bringing back the dedicated Playlists tab. Tell Beats 1 what to playhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/AppleMusicTips/7-beats1-420-90.jpg Alongside its subscription Music service, Apple rolled out something a bit more old-fashioned: a free, live radio station with scheduled programming that's surprisingly good. And in true terrestrial radio fashion, its DJs take requests. To get a song played, just head over to Apple's Beats 1 Tumblr page (http://applemusic.tumblr.com/requests) and find the number for the country you live in. Of course, you could hear it quicker if you just played it yourself, but somehow it sounds better when the rest of the world is listening with you. Play it againhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/AppleMusicTips/8-playagain-420-90.jpg Unless you're obsessively adding songs to your music library, it's going to be hard to remember all of those great tunes you heard while exercising. Thankfully, Apple has collected them for you. You'll find a handy list in the Up Next menu; tap the icon in the Now Playing window and scroll down to see your complete history - whether you played the song yourself or heard it on one of the radio stations. Listen locallyhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/AppleMusicTips/9-offline-420-90.jpg As long as you keep paying for Apple Music, the songs you save to your music library are yours to play, whether you're connected to a network or not. To store them on your iPhone and listen to them in places where a signal isn't available, tap that ellipses menu again and select "Make Available Offline" to download it. And when you want to listen to it, make sure the "Show Music Available Offline" toggle - which you'll find by tapping the Artists/Albums/Songs menu - is switched to green. Old-school Musichttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/MacLifeWebContent/AppleMusicTips/10-outwiththenew-420-90.jpg If you decide all of these new-fangled streaming features of Apple Music aren't for you, you can turn them off and make your Music app to the way it used to be (more or less). Go to Settings > Music and deactivate the Show Apple Music switch to remove the recommendation and on-demand streaming features. The buttons at the bottom of the app (Music, For You, New, Radio, Connect) will be partially replaced, but you'll still be able to listen to local music and radio stations, and the Connect option will remain as well - unless you switched it off using our earlier tip. http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/233194455930/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/47f5507d/sc/28/rc/1/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/233194455930/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/47f5507d/sc/28/rc/2/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/233194455930/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/47f5507d/sc/28/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/233194455930/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/47f5507d/sc/28/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/233194455930/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/47f5507d/sc/28/a2t.imghttp://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/47f5507d/sc/28/mf.gifhttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/WKS1JAuZqb8
  24. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/software/Uber/Uber-470-75.jpgUber has begun testing a new feature that should make actually getting picked up by a an Uber car safer and easier. The new "suggested pickup points" feature, spotted by TechCrunch, is being tested in the San Francisco area, though only some users are seeing the feature right now. The suggestions show up as green spots on the map, which indicates areas Uber cars can pull over safely and more easily to pick up passengers, likely based on information where Uber cars have stopped in the past. However, the feature doesn't necessarily take note of your current location or which direction you need to go, meaning you might be picked up going south when you need to head northward. You can drop your pin on a green dot, which will show the address so you can walk to it, though you aren't restricted to the suggested locations - you can still drop your pin anywhere you want to the Uber to get you. There's been no confirmation yet if the feature will be tested or rolled out across the US, but we've asked Uber for just this info and we'll update as we hear more information. Uber's maps is about to get even better with Micosoft's mapping technology http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/233194446104/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/47f41530/sc/15/rc/1/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/233194446104/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/47f41530/sc/15/rc/2/rc.img http://rc.feedsportal.com/r/233194446104/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/47f41530/sc/15/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/233194446104/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/47f41530/sc/15/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/233194446104/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/47f41530/sc/15/a2t.imghttp://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/47f41530/sc/15/mf.gifhttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/RR9M5l_W3Vo
  25. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/internet/Hacking/hacking-usethisone-470-75.jpgLast weekend, Hacking Team became Hacked Team after over 400GB of confidential company data was leaked, and it's emerged that a major Adobe Flash Player exploit is part of that package. A security bulletin released by Adobe explained that a critical vulnerability (CVE-2015-5119) has been found in Flash Player 18.0.0.194 and earlier for Windows, Mac and Linux. It has the potential to let an attacker take full control over a system. One of the Flash exploits (CVE-2015-0349) has already been patched up but another was described by Hacking Team as "the most beautiful Flash bug for the last four years since CVE-2010-2161". The latter allows malicious actors to execute code on a target machine by using a website and can be used against a raft of different browsers including Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Safari and Google Chrome. Patch is comingAdobe will release a security patch to cover up the vulnerability later today yet this might not be the end to the damage caused by the leaks from Hacking Team's locker of vulnerabilities. The Italian company has a range of different services and tools to help organisations and governments garner data on individuals with the hacked files revealing customers in Kazakhstan, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Lebanon, Mongolia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Sudan, Russia and UAE.
