http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/mobile_phones/iPhone/Apple%20Pay/Hands%20on/Apple%20Pay%20Review%20(6)-470-75.JPGApple Pay is continuing its (slow) march towards mobile payment domination by arriving at one of the happiest places on earth December 24. That's right - Apple Pay is going to Disney World! Well, specifically the Walt Disney World Resort, where it along with other NFC systems, like Google Wallet, will be acceptable forms of payment. Starting on Christmas Eve, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and eventual Apple Watch users can tap to pay at places like stores, quick-service restaurants, bars and ticket sales booths, according to WDWMagic.com. Other spots, like table service restaurants, will branch out to Apple Pay at a later date. .http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/41b2c4b7/sc/5/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/216443177509/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/41b2c4b7/sc/5/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/216443177509/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/41b2c4b7/sc/5/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/216443177509/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/41b2c4b7/sc/5/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/216443177509/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/41b2c4b7/sc/5/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/216443177509/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/41b2c4b7/sc/5/a2t.img

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/TRBC/sharepoint-logo-470-75.jpgA little known feature that some described as Microsoft's online version of "FrontPage", the company's ill-fated WYSIWIG HTML editor, will be dropped within weeks according to a Knowledgebase post. The latter confirms that the SharePoint Online Public Website feature will be deprecated from January 2015 and will be available for existing user for a minimum of two years. New Office 365 users won't have access to it. Moving forward, the statement says, "Office 365 customers will have access to third-party offerings that will enable them to easily integrate their public presence with their Office 365 service". More details will be unveiled next month. Microsoft explained the move by saying that the "difficult decision" was taken to deliver the utmost value to its customers and focus future investments while relying more on potential partners who will provide solutions at "discounted pricing rates". It's interesting to note that Microsoft has been relying more on "partners" lately. The move to strategically allow others to get selected portions of Microsoft's cake (where the company was never expected to get big revenues) is interesting indeed. Back in November, Microsoft announced a strategic partnership with Dropbox allowing the latter to compete better against its own cloud storage, OneDrive. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/DOWNLOADS/features/Christmas-countdown/foobar-470-75.jpgChristmas just wouldn't be Christmas without a little music, and whether you're listening to traditional tunes or something a little different, Foobar2000 can take care of all of your music needs. This free player keeps things wonderfully simple with its clean, uncluttered interface. There's support for a wide range of popular audio formats including MP3, AAC, FLAC and many more, as well as audio CDs and CD ripping. If you have existing playlists, they can be easily imported into Foobar2000 and arranged onto individual tabs so you can easily switch between them, and you can also create new lists with ease. As with other media players, you can set up a watch folder so that any files that are added to it are automatically included in your music library. With the option of adding folders from other computers, networks drives and local storage, you may well end up with a large number of music files, so it's just as well that there's a sturdy tool available to help you find what you're looking for. Foobar2000 is a highly competent program from the offset, but you can add extra feature by installing free add-ons. http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/41aec9d6/sc/4/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/216443165727/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/41aec9d6/sc/4/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/216443165727/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/41aec9d6/sc/4/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/216443165727/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/41aec9d6/sc/4/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/216443165727/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/41aec9d6/sc/4/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/216443165727/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/41aec9d6/sc/4/a2t.img

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/DOWNLOADS/roundups/2014-Dec/email-clients/Inky-470-75.jpg Those who work with email detest it, but it is still a daily part of many of our lives – and the provisions made for email within Windows leave a lot to be desired. As someone who works online, I send and receive many emails a day and need a trusty email client that won't break or falter. After the disaster that was Windows Vista, Microsoft ditched Windows Mail (later brought back in Windows 8), leaving a gap in the market for email conscious users of Windows. Luckily, developers have created many free email clients that do the job: here are the best five. Mozilla Thunderbird Best all-rounder; best for non-Outlook users. Created by Mozilla, the same people behind the Firefox web browser, Thunderbird is minimalistic in design, offering simple options such as "Get Mail" and "Write". Setting up my email account was quick and easy, needing only my email address and password – no server settings here – with options to import my Calendar and Contacts alongside my mail. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/DOWNLOADS/roundups/2014-Dec/email-clients/Thunderbird-420-90.jpg Thunderbird filters out junk emails effectively, as would be expected from a renounced web brand. In fact, having Mozilla as the developer of Thunderbird is one of its greatest strengths; regular updates and bug fixes are forthcoming and support is good. The clear and well designed interface sets Thunderbird apart, with over 1,000 add-ons – integration with social networks, design tweaks, and so on – coming as a bonus. eM Client Best for those who want a good indie email client. Offering an interface reminiscent of Microsoft's desktop Outlook client, eM Client – a clumsy name – offers a host of email services tied up in a streamlined way that works well and is, above all else, no frills. All of the options – Delete, Write New, Reply All, and so on – are presented at the top, with the three column layout offering a clear view of your emails, inboxes and email accounts. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/DOWNLOADS/roundups/2014-Dec/email-clients/eM-Client-420-90.jpg Of the five, eM Client is the best mix of simplicity of design and power, easily importing my emails and offering an Outlook-style experience for free. The only negative is that eM Client isn't backed by a large corporation – such as Microsoft, Mozilla or Opera – and so development could be slow. Inky Best for people with multiple email accounts. Offering a more casual twist to email, Inky is a fantastic option for those who want to use multiple accounts in one place. The interface is simple, with a two-column system offering easy access to all of your accounts as well as other utilities, such as the Calendar. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/DOWNLOADS/roundups/2014-Dec/email-clients/Inky-420-90.jpg Inky works with every major email service available and offers support for custom settings, enabling anyone to add any account if they know the server's inputs. Alongside this, Inky also has cloud syncing—via a proprietary account—which means that your email is synced across versions of Inky. As someone who has multiple email accounts, Inky's ability to seamlessly make them into one – at least for appearance's sake – is impressive, and earns it a place on this list. Claws Mail Best for those who love simplicity. Unlike all of the other email applications on this list, Claws Mail is a throwback offering an interface reminiscent of Windows XP. For those who don't like the mess of unneeded animations or the swoosh of a tiled interface, Claws Mail offers a refreshing change: grey and blue is the colour scheme, offering a simple, straightforward interface. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/DOWNLOADS/roundups/2014-Dec/email-clients/Claws-Mail-420-90.jpg Don't let the utilitarian interface fool you though. Underneath, Claws Mail has all of the features and functions of a more illustriously designed email client, with the ability to have multiple email accounts and email threading. It's email convenience without the clutter. Outlook Best for those who rely on Outlook. For the 420 million users of Outlook.com, Microsoft's built-in application has always been the best option. Built by Microsoft for Exchange and Outlook accounts, the program offers extensive enterprise-level options and syncs Calendars, Contacts and Notes seamlessly between Windows devices. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/DOWNLOADS/roundups/2014-Dec/email-clients/Outlook2-420-90.jpg The Windows 7 version of Outlook is starting to look slightly outdated – despite being used in almost every work place around the world – when compared to the slick Windows 8 app, but it still does a great job and is the best client for those who rely on Microsoft's email option. http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/41adab3b/sc/4/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/216443116500/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/41adab3b/sc/4/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/216443116500/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/41adab3b/sc/4/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/216443116500/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/41adab3b/sc/4/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/216443116500/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/41adab3b/sc/4/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/216443116500/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/41adab3b/sc/4/a2t.img

Download of the day: Foxit Reader
sincity posted a topic in OS Customization, Discussion and Support
http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/DOWNLOADS/PDF/Foxit-Reader/Foxit-470-75.jpgFoxit Reader is one of the best all-round PDF packages available, exceeding what many of its paid-for rivals do whilst remaining completely free. Why you need itIf you're looking for great free PDF software, head in Foxit Reader's direction. It makes the bold claim that it is 'better than Adobe PDF Reader and Acrobat', but this isn't merely a case of hubris from the new kid on the block. Foxit Reader has been around for half as long as Adobe's PDF software, but it's been making some serious waves along the way. It's secure, light on system resources and loads up quickly, and the Microsoft Office-style ribbon bar keeps options tidy and easy to find. Separate PDF documents can be loaded in the same window thanks to Foxit's tab system, ensuring your desktop doesn't get clogged up with multiple windows. When it comes to reading and editing PDFs, Foxit puts in a truly strong showing. You can highlight text, insert bookmarks, draw graphics, type on the document and more. Create PDF documents from scratch, convert images into PDFs or reverse the process and change PDFs into text documents – it's all there in Foxit. Then when you're done, you can easily share your work with collaborators or on social media using Foxit's extensive range of integrated tools. Foxit Reader's main rival is Adobe Acrobat, and while Acrobat has a few more advanced features, it also currently costs $19.99 a month to use (about £12.79 a month); Foxit is totally free, packed with features and more than meets the needs of the everyday user. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/DOWNLOADS/features/Christmas-countdown/paintnet-470-75.jpgProving that image editing doesn't have to be complicated, Paint.NET brings many of the advanced features of expensive software to a free program. Funnily enough, this is an application whose original team of developers started work on the Paint program that's built into Windows, but this take things to the next level. You'll probably end up taking no end of photos over Christmas, and some of them might need a little work to make them look their best. Removing red eye is a breeze, as is removing unsightly blemishes from otherwise perfect shots. This might not be as powerful as the likes of Photoshop, but it includes all of the everyday tools you need, all presented in a wonderfully accessible package that is quick and easy to use. There are all of the usual built-in tools and filters, but there is also scope for extending the capabilities of the program through the use of plugins; there are a huge number available to download from the Paint.NET website. The beauty of this program is that you can keep things simple if you prefer, but there is also the potential for experimentation with more advanced features without ever feeling overwhelmed. http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/41a7cfbf/sc/4/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/216443084233/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/41a7cfbf/sc/4/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/216443084233/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/41a7cfbf/sc/4/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/216443084233/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/41a7cfbf/sc/4/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/216443084233/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/41a7cfbf/sc/4/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/216443084233/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/41a7cfbf/sc/4/a2t.img

So much so that the iPhone maker has made a dedicated Health app. This official iPhone Health app keeps track of everyone's important biometric data and also records steps though the Apple's M8 and M7 co-processor within the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and iPhone 5S. What's more, these fitness metrics can be corralled from and shared with many of the third-party health apps on iOS. You won't have to always switch between apps. Apple could have limited the scope of its pre-installed Health app to the forthcoming Apple Watch, but it didn't. More and more, the company is opening itself up to outside developers, and that's healthy. iPhone Health app: How to use ithttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/features/8%20best%20fitness%20apps%20for%20iOS%208/Apple%20Health%20app-420-90.jpg Health is the latest built-in app Apple has introduced with iOS 8. It acts as a central hub for developers to share fitness and health data from their own respective apps, fitness trackers, smartwatches or simple data users plug into the Health Kit directly. The app will practically take all sorts of data from your age, weight, height, meals, steps exercise or what have you and collate it all into your personal health record. The interesting bit comes with being able to see all of this information charted into graphs across hours to days to months and so on. Additionally users can also setup a Medical ID to give your doctor a quick medial record that goes beyond a yearly check up with your local physician. Most importantly, though, the Health app acts as hub to also display all the data coming in from third-party apps. After a rough start more and more apps on the app store are being updated with Health app support. Now the only problem is figuring out which of the thousands are the best. But fret, not as we bring you our list of the 8 best fitness apps for iOS 8. 1. RunKeeperhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/features/8%20best%20fitness%20apps%20for%20iOS%208/RunKeeper-420-90.jpg This app has been a keeper well before Apple introduced its Health app and now it's been made even better with the added integration. RunKeeper taps into the iPhone's GPS to record your time, pace, calories burned and how far you've run. The app will also give you audio alerts telling you how you're doing pace-wise, plus your time and distance in the middle of a run. Once you're done making your rounds, you can review your data with charts and a nice little map of your entire route. Beyond tracking your impromptu jogging sessions, users also have access to a preloaded set of training and running routines. Alternatively, you can design your own custom interval workouts and set your own challenges. Compatibility: Requires iOS 6.0 or later on an iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. 2. 7 Minute Workout http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/features/8%20best%20fitness%20apps%20for%20iOS%208/7%20Minute%20Workout-420-90.jpg Of course, there's more to exercising than just running and 7 Minute Workout can help introduce you to a whole new set of calisthenics. The app includes instructions for a whole series of exercises including tricep dips, planks (not to be confused with planking), box squats and much more. It even provides instructional video for each to make sure you have the proper form. When it's go time, the app also simplifies workout sessions by timing and guiding you through the process. 7 Minute Workout includes three preset workouts to make sure you're pushing muscles to exercise your whole body. If you want to focus on your pectorals or what have you, there's also the option to arrange a custom session. After you're all done the 7 Minute Workout app integrates with Health app by porting over your workout data and stats. Compatibility: Requires iOS 7.0 or later on an iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. 3. MotionX 24/7http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/features/8%20best%20fitness%20apps%20for%20iOS%208/MotionX-420-90.jpg After moving around so much, you're going to get tuckered out eventually. Sleep is good for you and there's a way to analyze how well you're resting using just your smartphone with MotionX 24/7. All you have to do is place your handset next to your pillow in bed or wear it on an armband while you sleep and start the app. Using the iPhone's accelerometer, MotionX 24/7 can tell when you're tossing and turning. All the while, the iOS device's microphone will record your breathing and snoring to provide insight on how restful your sleep is. The end result of all this data recording helps to determine when is the best possible moment for you to wake up feeling fully refreshed. Beyond keeping tabs on your sleep schedule, MotionX 24/7 also includes step counting and a feature for checking your heart rate by placing your finger over the rear camera and flash. Compatibility: Requires iOS 7.0 or later on an iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. More of the best health apps on iOS 84. UP by Jawbonehttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/features/8%20best%20fitness%20apps%20for%20iOS%208/UP-420-90.jpg Up might be the latest Jawbone's latest app designed for the Jawbone Up24 fitness tracker, but you can also to use it with just an iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus or iPhone 5S by itself. Thanks to the new Health app and the step tracking capabilities of Apple's M8 and M7 co-processor you can use the app to track your steps, sleep and food intake. The later options require a lot manual input there are few apps that look as good as Jawbone's Up, which displays all your metrics in bright colors with line and bar graphs. Honestly, with Jawbone Up3 coming out soon, this app is a good holdover instead of springing for the last-generation wristband fitness tracker. Compatibility: Requires iOS 7.0 or later on an iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and iPhone 5S. 5. Sick Weatherhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/features/8%20best%20fitness%20apps%20for%20iOS%208/Sick%20Weather-420-90.jpg Staying healthy isn't just a matter of staying in shape, it's also not getting sick. Labeling itself as a Doppler radar for sickness, Sick Weather provides users with real-time maps of illnesses around the city. The app combs social media for reports of people feeling under the weather and adds makers onto a local map. Sick Weather covers a long list of known bugs including the Flu, Norovirus, Pink Eye and Whooping Cough, plus 19 other illnesses. In theory, by plotting out exactly where sick people have shown up, you'll be able to avoid getting sick yourself. Users will also be able to turn on an alert feature notifying them before they enter a danger zone by surprise. This is the only app on this list that does not sync up with Apple's Health app, but we feel it's still important enough to note. Just keep in mind Sick Weather adds a big drain on your battery life by accessing the iPhone's GPS, so be sure to quit out when you're staying put for a while. Compatibility: Requires iOS 7.0 or later on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. 6. Carrot Fithttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/features/8%20best%20fitness%20apps%20for%20iOS%208/Carrot%20Fit-420-90.jpg Personal trainers can be awfully scary sometimes. Electronic fitness apps are too nice allowing you to slack off too often. Carrot Fit places itself somewhere between (or outside) these two extremes by comically berating you into exercising more. Upon opening up the app, Carrot Fit proclaims itself as your new fitness overlord before proceeding to demand thanks for getting your flabby self into shape. Just like to the 7 Minute Workout Carrot Fit will prompt you with an exercise routine and count everything down. Rather than embedding instructional videos from YouTube like 7 Minute Workout, Carrot Fit animates and explains exercises to great comedic effect. This is all helped by a monotone, but generally insulting, GLaDOS-like voice. The app also makes constant pop culture references including calling wall squats the Invisible Iron Throne as a nod to a Game of Thrones. Later the app asked me if I feel the burn before remarking that it was the feeling of "winter coming to your knees." The comedy schtick adds a bit of levity to what are generally boring and grueling exercises. But underneath all the extra polish and jokes, Carrot Fit is a just very well put together app with great production value. Like Jawbone's UP app, Carrot Fit will benefit from iPhones equipped with Apple's M7 or M8 co-processor. The app is entirely usable with the iPhone 5 and iPod Touch 5 running iOS 8 with the caveat that you won't be able to add your steps to the total of calories burned in your 7 minutes in hell workouts. Compatibility: Requires iOS 8.0 or later on an iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. 7. WebMDhttp://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/features/8%20best%20fitness%20apps%20for%20iOS%208/WebMD-420-90.jpg WebMD is slightly different from all the other apps we've previously discussed as its more focused on keeping track of your overall health and not just during exercise. In this sense, WebMD focused on developing your Healthy Target working in tandem with the Apple Health app and devices made by devices made by Entra, Fitbit, Jawbone, Telcare and Withings. In the app you'll spend a lot of time developing and sticking to healthy habits such as competing 10 jumping jacks, five squats and five pushups before turning on your TV each evening. The end goal is to lose weight, eat healthier, sleep more and just generally living healthier. There are also two other parts of the app; the first being Health Tools, which provides medical explanations for illnesses and their likely symptoms. Similar to the WebMD site you can also access medical listings for local doctors pharmacies and hospitals. Healthy Living, meanwhile, is a daily lifestyle magazine that offers tips on exercise, beauty, food and relationships. Compatibility: Requires iOS 7.0 or later on an iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/laptops/HP/HP%20Chromebook%2011/review/HP%20Chromebook%2011%2001-470-75.jpgThere's a Chrome browser extension that lets users activate voice commands by saying "OK Google," but Chrome OS users soon won't need it anymore. The browser extension required users to have a specific page open for it to work, but Google has built the feature right in to the latest developer build of Chrome OS. That means the operating system listens for the words "OK Google" all the time, no matter what you're doing or which pages are open. This is, of course, an option, so if you'd rather it not listen - for whatever reason, be it saving battery life when your Chromebook is unplugged or even privacy concerns - you can turn it off. Chrome OS's "OK Google" functionality hasn't rolled out in a wide update for the stable channel yet, but anyone interested can grab a version with the feature from the Chrome OS developer channel. If you're interested check out instructions on activating it over at the Chromium Code Review. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/DOWNLOADS/features/Christmas-countdown/evernote-470-75.jpgEvernote is the Swiss Army knife of data collection programs. There are versions available not only for Windows but also for phones and tablets, so you can take the information with you wherever you go, and the sharing options mean that you can work on things with friends and family. The possibilities with the program are just about endless; you can use it to store and organise all manner of things you need to keep track of. You could use it to record recipes you find online and build up a shopping list, or you could maintain a list of people you need to write thank you letters to. There's a web clipping tool available that can be used to save text and pictures from websites – great if you're looking around for things to buy in the January sales. Evernote is an excellent planning tool, so you can easily put together ideas for things you want to do, resolutions you want to make and so on. Evernote is available to download and use completely free of charge, but paid-for premium accounts gain access to extra features – but for day-to-day use, a free account is more than enough for most people. http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/419eb7bb/sc/4/mf.gif

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/televisions/Samsung/comcast_xfinity_uhd-470-75.jpgIt was promised all the way back in January, and now Comcast has finally delivered its own 4K streaming app, Comcast Xfinity in UHD. Unfortunately it's only available on 2014 Samsung Ultra HD TVs - just as was promised during CES 2014. The Xfinity in UHD app is available starting today with shows like Chicago Fire, Suits and Covert Affairs. Parks and Recreation will be available in February, Comcast said in a news release, with more sure to follow after that. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/games_consoles/Xbox%20One/Apps/pandora_xboxone-470-75.jpgPandora has never before released an app for a video game console, but it just launched on Xbox One. Microsoft isn't touting this fact in its Xbox Wire post describing the new Pandora app and a slew of others arriving on Xbox One, but it's true nonetheless. The free Xbox One Pandora app lets users create personalized stations based on specific artists, songs, genres, or composers, and it's available now in the US. But that's only one of the new apps now arriving on the console. Vevo, Bravo, Telemundo, and moreThe Xbox One is also getting a Vevo app in more than a dozen countries, Popcornflix in the US and Canada, and Bravo Now and Telemundo Now in the US. None of those are quite as exciting as the HBO Go app that dropped in November, but who's complaining? "From the beginning, our vision for Xbox One has included offering gamers the ability to play the best games and seamlessly switch to the apps, movies and TV shows they love," the Xbox post reads. "As the year comes to a close, we're excited to continue that vision." Plex has announced that its incredibly popular media centre app has finally launched on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 across Australia, Europe and most of Asia. Don't feel too perplexed, U.S. PlayStation owners – Plex has promised that a stateside launch will be happening soon, along with many more locations around the world. Let's talk about Plex, babyThe PlayStation Plex app will reportedly look almost identical to the app released for Xbox One in October, and will unfortunately come with the same limitations of that version. Use of the Plex app for PlayStation will be limited to Plex Pass subscribers, with only video and library support available at the outset. MKV container videos and DTS audio are not currently supported, either. Thankfully, Plex is planning to add support for channels, music and photos, as well as non-Plex Pass users sometime in the near future. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/internet/Hacking/hacking-usethisone-470-75.jpgDan Holden is the Director of ASERT, Arbor Networks's Security Engineering and Response Team.. His teams oversee the ATLAS global security intelligence database, and are responsible for threat landscape monitoring and Internet security research including the reverse engineering of malicious code. With DDoS an increasingly preferred method of attack, especially in the last 12 months, the threat risen to critical levels Techradar Pro: Why has the DDOS threat grown so much over the last year? Are businesses more vulnerable? Dan Holden: DDoS attacks are continuing to evolve and the last 12 months has seen huge growth in the number, complexity and size of the attacks occuring. When we couple this with businesses increasing reliance on Internet connectivity, for either revenue or access to cloud based data and applications, protection from DDoS threat should be a top priority. Over the last year the trend seems to have been a return to large traffic floods, known as volumetric attacks, to effectively cut their targets off from the Internet. Volumetric attacks have always been the most common attack type, but in the last year the scale of the problem has changed. In 2013 saw an eight fold growth in the number of attacks over 20Gb/sec, based on data from Arbor's ATLAS monitoring system, which receives hourly DDoS statistics from over 300 service providers around the world, with just the first quarter of 2014 seeing 150 per cent increase on 2013's annual total. TRP: With such a large network footprint, what peaks in DDoS activity has Arbor tracked this year? DH: Q1 2014 probably saw the most concentrated burst of large volumetric attack activity ever, with 72 attacks against a French ISP tracked at over 100Gb/sec and a new largest ever attack at 325Gb/sec. This attack was caused by amplification/reflection which is used to amplify the volumes of traffic attackers are capable of generating. While this attack vector has been around for some time, it has grown in popularity since 2013. During January 2014 a number of gaming companies fell victim to a Network Time Protocol (NTP) amplification/reflection attack creating very large bandwidth and causing severe availability problems. TRP: What types of DDoS attack are organisations currently finding themselves most vulnerable to? DH: Volumetric attacks have grabbed the headlines in the past year on numerous occasions, but we mustn't forget about the more stealthy application layer attacks. According to the Arbor World-Wide Infrastructure Security Report for 2013, nearly a quarter of attacks now target the application layer. Web services remain the top target of these attacks, but there has been significant growth in the number of attacks targeting encrypted Web services (HTTPS) – which should be a concern for e-commerce, finance and government organisations. DDoS has become a complex attack type, with a broad spread of organisations being targeted. TRP: So what does this mean in terms of security mitigation? DH: Everything we have seen over the past year re-affirms layered DDoS protection as the best way to defend organisations from a DDoS threat. Network perimeter defenses provide proactive protection from application layer attacks, but they need to be coupled with a cloud or service provider based DDoS protection service to deal with higher magnitude, volumetric, attacks which are meant to saturate Internet connectivity. TRP: When communicating its value to the board, how best can a CIO justify investment in DDoS security? DH:The security and network teams across a broad spread of organisations are becoming increasingly aware of the need for these layered DDoS defense solutions, but they have to compete, from a budget perspective, with other business priorities. For the CIO, the key is to compare the financial implications of a prolonged Internet service outage with the cost of appropriate defences. Fundamentally, it's imperative for CIOs and CISOs to be able to put a monetary value on the cost of an attack when building a case for investment into security products and processes. The starting point is to estimate the overall impact a DDoS attack is likely to have from a revenue, operational overhead and reputational perspective – these may vary according to the nature of the business in question. Modeling all of these costs will help determine the benefits of DDoS protection. Effective DDoS mitigation can help reduce these costs by 90 per cent or more in the event of an attack. TRP: Is it ever possible for the IT department to win the battle against cyber threats? DH:How do you define win? These days, the idea of prevention is outdated as attacks are out of an organisation's control. Many organisations can't prevent their business from being attacked. However, what they can control is having the capability in place to detect threats. Businesses need to be asking themselves how quickly they can detect a threat that has entered their network and if they can't, organisations need to be doing something about it. TRP: How are CISOs able to deliver an understandable call to action and gain the credibility to push their strategic plans? DH: CISOs need to elevate security to the boardroom for a C-suite level discussion, so that they cannot only talk about threat assessments and security architecture, but the potential bottom line business implications of a breach. Security can then be communicated from the boardroom downwards, to the rest of the organisation. TRP: Despite organisations investing in the latest security, why do these threats keep succeeding? DH: Having all the latest technology is certainly an advantage but it is not the complete picture. It takes a unified, integrated combination of technology, people and processes. Having the right technology to identify threats and alert security teams is only the beginning. Organisations need to be asking themselves if they have the right teams and skill sets to maximise their investment in the latest technology? Do they have the right incident response processes, planning and practice in place? Arbor Networks recently commissioned research with the Economist Intelligence Unit, surveying 360 global CISOs and IT decision makers, which revealed that despite more than two thirds of organisations suffering a breach in the past two years, only 17 per cent were confident in their ability to respond to an attack. TRP: With the launch of new certifications, such as the UK government's Cyber Essentials plan, how should organisations work with government and third parties to boost confidence in their security? DH: Threats are global and no one company has the capabilities to assess the global landscape and understand its implications for their organisation. Because of this, there should be greater threat intelligence sharing as the more information that is passed between involved parties, the better. The retail industry has recently been targeted and victimised by a series of very high profile Point-of-Sale (PoS) attacks, and has only started taking the steps in implementing an intelligence shared infrastructure. This has been demonstrated in the US by the launch of a Retail Cyber Intelligence Sharing Center. This information sharing and analysis center, ISAC, has been backed by Target and other major retailers, and is a great move for the retail industry. This should continue across other industries too. http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/418c206a/sc/1/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/216443007205/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/418c206a/sc/1/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/216443007205/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/418c206a/sc/1/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/216443007205/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/418c206a/sc/1/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/216443007205/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/418c206a/sc/1/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/216443007205/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/418c206a/sc/1/a2t.img

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/software/Windows/windows-xp-cracked-470-75.jpgInternationally he is considered an industry expert on datacentre migrations, and has developed a unique set of tools and processes from practical experience. At Xceed, Simon Johnson runs the migration practice, with Xceed's mX - Migration Accelerator platform, specialising in datacentre and desktop migrations. Simon Johnson has been quoted as saying "IT migrations are some of the most complicated events an organisation will face" and yet he is also seeing so many organisations taking it on. Techradar Pro: If IT migrations are problematic, why is it that organisations do them at all? Simon Johnson: Technology changes daily and the best solution to a problem is rarely in the past. The demands & opportunities of the mobile-cloud era, or as Gartner prefers the Third Era of IT, mean that legacy systems and infrastructure have to be updated to continue to support business needs. It is not so much a choice as a necessity to be able to provide the best services to internal and external customers in a cost effective way. Whether migrating to embrace technology advancements, or migrating to control costs, they will always be complicated events, but the benefits are significant and migrating is worth the short term pain. TRP: How much do you think costs play a part in this, when considered against technology and performance? SJ: Cost will always be an important factor and is directly linked to technology and performance. The opportunities presented by new technologies mean companies can achieve two things – they can increase efficiency and drive down the cost of 'BAU' services. However, they can also increase revenue and sales through providing smarter services to customers, bringing products to market faster across multiple devices and geographies. TRP: Gartner research has recently reported that 70 per cent of datacentre migrations will incur significant time delays or cause unplanned downtime, what do you think the main cause for this is? SJ: I read that paper with interest and they point to one of the main reasons – the planning stage. We've also found that a little more time spent up front defining the scope and how to communicate strategy and change to the business results in a faster, smoother and most importantly more successful programme overall. TRP: What role do legacy applications sitting in the datacentre play? SJ: Legacy applications are one of the prime reasons that businesses struggle with datacentre migrations. Legacy applications and the infrastructure they sit on can be many years old and the knowledge about how they are configured walks out the door when employees leave. During datacentre migrations, limited knowledge of the legacy estate can slow the migration process as SME's get caught up defining how to move the more modern estate and not enough time planning the legacy migration. TRP: What are the three biggest concerns that your clients have highlighted when it comes to datacentre migrations? SJ: Communication, discovering configuration items and planning. Poor communication between the business and the project team results in limited buy in from the BAU team. If people feel that they are being included in the migration process and that their concerns are addressed, they are much more likely to embrace change and play active roles. As a result of better communication, an easier and more accurate discovery programme can be achieved. Automated discovery tools are great at getting information about the well-known and the easy to reach items. Knowledge that is stored in employees heads and privately held spreadsheets is often the most important as it answers the questions about the complicated legacy equipment. Ensuring that all information sources are combined effectively is one of the best ways to improve migration results, as is meticulous planning. Adapting to business as usual change and cascading the results into the project plan are important to ensure migration success. Clients often mention that the project team cannot adapt quickly enough to the day to day activities and as a result they can find themselves working with out of date information. TRP: What type of migrations are the most common or complex? SJ: Most common are those resulting from mergers or acquisitions where companies want to rationalise their infrastructure footprint by closing premises. Interestingly these are often the most complex as they often require technical changes to be made as part of a migration, so that the company being acquired ends up in the right technical infrastructure environment. Making significant changes to the technical infrastructure adds a risk to success of the migration process. Complex migrations are often characterised by latency impact – moving a datacentre which is located close to the user community to far away, resulting in poor end-user experience which requires resolution. TRP: Which organisations typically have the biggest migration challenges? SJ: Organisations that have a significant amount of technical debt and / or lack of investment to maintain their systems to a reasonably current level usually have the biggest challenge. This is because the systems may have application versions which are no longer supportable, or which do not run on more recent versions of operating systems. Those which have a great number of interdependencies between systems are challenged as there is a need to balance the logical migration group with the size of infrastructure to move at once. Finally those where the risk appetite of the organisation is low and the available budget for the migration is below what is needed to support a low-risk approach. TRP: For all of those IT leaders reading who are about to commence a datacentre migration what piece of advice would you give? SJ: I'd go back to the planning stage being the most important success factor. I'd advise them to work with a combination of internal experts and external datacentre migration specialists. http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/418bd099/sc/4/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/216442969454/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/418bd099/sc/4/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/216442969454/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/418bd099/sc/4/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/216442969454/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/418bd099/sc/4/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/216442969454/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/418bd099/sc/4/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/216442969454/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/418bd099/sc/4/a2t.img

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/internet/Music/Spotify/Spotify%20Connect/spotify_connect5-470-75.jpgThe war between Taylor Swift and Spotify, which saw a mass exodus of Swift's songs from the service and the company responding by pointing out all the money she's missed out on because of that, may have elicited some change on Spotify's end. Sort of. As anyone might have predicted, it's Spotify, not the singer, who's eating crow on this one, though this probably isn't the shift Swift was hoping for. "What it has highlighted for us is we need to do a better job explaining to artists how streaming benefits them," Spotify founder and CEO Daniel Ek told Billboard. Um, OK. So you're not actually going to change anything, you're just going to explain it better? But wait, there's more. No pressure"The point that's been lost is that Spotify's the fastest-growing revenue source the industry has," Ek continued. "There are many artists to whom, through the labels, we're paying out millions a year already. Those check sizes will just keep increasing. I'm certain that if we can get the billion-people-plus that are consuming music online and move them into a model like Spotify, the industry would be considerably bigger than it is today." He's clearly pulling numbers out of a hat when he says that "there's a billion people doing [piracy]," but his point that those people should be catered to with legal services, and not simply discounted, is still valid. He added that despite this debate, Spotify will still not allow artists or labels to determine what's available on which Spotify subscription tiers. He also said that - contrary to certain rumors about Apple putting pressure on the whole music industry to lower streaming subscription prices - Spotify hasn't felt any pressure from labels in that area. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/features/smart-pebble-470-75.jpgThe major limitation of many smartwatches is that users still need to have their phones on them despite the impressive tech on their wrists, but the wearables are slowly becoming more independent. Case in point: Pebble smartwatch users with Android phones just gained the ability to take action directly on the watch in response to certain notifications from the phone. For example, if you receive a text message, you can reply with an emoji directly from the Pebble on your wrist. Or, if you get a Square Cash request, you can send money from the watch's tiny screen. Anything you can do, I can do alsoThis functionality arrives in the version 2.3 update of Pebble's Android app. Here's a video of the emoji feature in action. Pebble smartwatches have always been cute, and it's nice to see their feature set jacked up, even though their inferiority complex is showing through. " width="420">YouTube : Pebble Community Manager Joseph Kristoffer says "it's Android Wear notification compatibility on Pebble," though he also points out that actual Android Wear watches don't have some of these features. But "if you can do it with Android Wear, you can do it with Pebble," Kristoffer wrote in a blog post. Users with Android 4.0 or higher can join the Pebble beta testing program to get access to the 2.3 app now. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/laptops/Dell/Dell%20Chromebook%2011/ChromebookinClassroom-470-75.jpgSaradhi Sreegiriraju is responsible for product management and technical marketing at Tintri. Previously, he was a Consultant Product Manager at EMC/Data Domain where he brought innovations such as Data Domain Boost deduplication protocol to market which helped establish Data Domain as the platform of choice for backup storage. Prior to Data Domain, he was at NetApp and Fujitsu in various product management and engineering roles. He has an MBA from Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley. Techradar Pro: The edtech industry is one of the largest industries in the world and it is getting bigger. How different is the edtech industry from others? Saradhi Sreegiriraju: Even though its make-up is different to other industry sectors, digital use in education is three times larger than the media and entertainment industry. We're only at the beginning of opportunities in this market. In the content industries the ratio is 35 percent digital against 65 percent non-digital. In the education market on its own and digital use drops to just 3 percent vs 97 percent non-digital. This shows the huge growth potential available in the education technology (edtech) market. In fact, some commentators have predicted a 15-fold growth in the edtech market over the next decade and the emergence of an unprecedented investment opportunity in the sector. TRP: What are the biggest challenges for the edtech industry at the moment? SS:There are a few hurdles to overcome before the European edtech industry can grow substantially. Disruptors and innovators, creating new technologies to serve an increasingly savvy digital audience are widespread. The demand is there and a recognition of technology as a channel to deliver learning is apparent. In fact, Europe has some of the most inventive edtech start-ups in the world. However, the ability to scale their offering is really the crux of the problem. The market is mostly comprised of small companies, which despite their potential, lack the distribution fire power needed to serve multiple markets. If you look at the K12 market (US primary and secondary education) its make-up is 10 million students across half a million schools. These small EU firms simply can't scale to reach this many people. The lack of investment is a huge problem for the European edtech industry. If you look at global volumes of EU edtech funding since 2007, the scale of the problem becomes very apparent. Funding levels in the US are 10 times more than those in Europe. Asia is breaking ground too, overtaking Europe significantly in the funding race. However, the volume of students in Western Europe, substantially outweighs those in the US – so there's a real imbalance. TRP: What are some of the current technology trends in online learning? SS: In terms of higher education, massive open online courses (MOOCs) have opened the education market . They have caught the public's imagination and disrupted a market that had been under innovated. The business models to create profitable or even self-sustaining organisations have been challenging. MOOCs provide access to education to all – creating demand from consumers for the edtech market. This year we expect to see a move to "Selective" online courses or SOOCS. Selection will arise through pre-qualification requirements or through memberships to vocational organisations. The selection criteria will provide better learner engagement with the course and a more identifiable need from the user which will allow the course provider to charge more easily for the value added provided. In the K12 market, there is some disruption happening, which is being replicated in all markets and that is the rise of the connected device and Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) schemes. In the school environment, the use of smart phones and tablets is disruptive at several levels. These devices are cheaper than desktop computers and laptops which is appealing for a sector constantly under pressure to cut costs. The level of engagement with smartphones is so high amongst children that it seems like a missed opportunity not to use these devices to deliver education. BYOD is an important trend in the edtech market, for this exact reason. If the tablet can't be in the school, institutions should find a way to put the school in the tablet, to provide a continuum of touch points to support learning outside of the school. Apps, programmes and mobile optimised sites can provide access to teacher approved materials, study guides, quizzes, mock tests and so on – all enabling focused, personalised learning, in and out of the home. TRP: How do you see that technology has changed education and workplace learning? How does it compare to 'traditional' methods? SS: Technology is an enabler. In an already digital market, the digitalisation of education is happening for the same reasons it's happening in other markets - ease of access, personalisation, flexibility, interaction, engagement. Digital platforms bring content to life for users globally. Traditional methods of teaching are still widely recognised as the best method – and this is certainly the case for some disciplines, language learning and soft skills based teaching for example, benefit from face to face interaction. We've seen digital learning legitimised by the edtech market, with disruptors such as busuu launching virtual classroom platforms for students, allowing for greater interaction, better learning, and yet still allows for easy remote access. TRP: Who are the major European technology players in the industry? SS: In a recent ranking of the biggest players in the market, the European EdTech 20, three firms, Busuu, Bettermarks and The Student Room were identified as most influential based on innovation, scale, market impact and revenue growth in Europe over the past year. The Student Room is an online platform of resources including study guides and forums and busuu, is a new platform for language learning that uses video chat and native speakers to create a virtual classroom – both of which have been highlighted above as key trends for the industry this year. However, also gaining ground in the market are programmes which allow for adaptive learning. Bettermarks is an adaptive learning platform which allows users to access personalised maths learning online, and intelligently analyses answers to improve understanding and performance. TRP: In comparison to the big players, how are edtech startups fairing in the current market? Do they have adequate support? SS: As a young market and low digital usage, edtech firms are typically small to medium sized enterprises, so there's less variation between company size in this market. Despite their potential, the majority of companies in this sector struggle to earn turnovers of more that £4m. Their size, fragmentation and lack of EU investment means that they're incapable of scaling the operation to new markets. Firms in the EU market need investment to change, and fuel growth. TRP: What more should the European Government be doing to promote and support the edtech industry? SS: In the US, early stage companies benefit from more intuitional investor support, a scheme not available to EU firms. The European education sector is slow to change and adopt new ways of working. The US has moved quicker and far further along the curve in the space. Though that all industries are facing digital disruption, and the education sector perhaps has the most to gain from the increase in engagement and interactivity in content. Technology has the power to help users learn better. This isn't just the case in Europe, it's a global trend and a global need. Without appropriate support, Europe's edtech firms will get swallowed by those in the US and Asia, who've recognised the opportunities, potential and benefits in this market, and are subsequently, leading the way. TRP: Are tech professionals choosing to work in the edtech market - are there any specific skills required that separate candidates for this vs fintech/medtech etc? SS: The tech industry as a whole has long suffered from a skills shortage, with school leavers often falling fowl to the misconception that a job in this discipline is dull. Those of us who work in the industry know that's far from the case – and the increase in government support to improve the ICT curriculum, the launch of coding clubs and high profile IT professionals such as Mark Zuckerburg all help to attract new talent into the industry. Taking this skills shortage and coupling it with public sector cuts often means candidates don't feel there are stable opportunities in this sector. The increase in outsourcing in the public sector to cuts costs has blurred the lines somewhat, so even candidates heading to large software houses or small tech start-ups have the opportunity to make their mark in the edtech market. http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/417f630c/sc/4/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/215951392324/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/417f630c/sc/4/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/215951392324/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/417f630c/sc/4/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/215951392324/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/417f630c/sc/4/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/215951392324/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/417f630c/sc/4/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/215951392324/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/417f630c/sc/4/a2t.img

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/DOWNLOADS/productivity/Dropbox/Dotd-014-Dropbox-470-75.jpgWhen it comes to protecting your files from a catastrophic hard disk failure, there are simpler options than backing everything up to CDs. Cloud computing is the answer, and Dropbox is one of the frontrunners. Why you need itIt's been a good year for Dropbox users. Competition from Google Drive and iCloud saw Dropbox slash prices and increase storage – 1TB now costs £7.99 a month, almost half the price iCloud users pay for the same amount – and in November, Dropbox users gained the ability to edit Microsoft Office files from within the app for the first time. The changes that rolled out in 2014 therefore make it a prime contender if you want to keep your most important files safely backed up. A free account starts with 2GB – plenty for most users – and you can earn up to 16GB more by referring your friends and getting them to sign up. It's great for collaboration, too, enabling you to share large files with your co-workers that would be too big to send over email. That makes it especially useful if you're working from home or in a different location to your co-workers. One of the most useful features of Dropbox is its ability to store multiple versions of the same file. This can be a life-saver if you make changes to a document, then later realise that you needed the old version. Just browse to your Dropbox account online, right click on the file in question and click 'Previous versions' to bring the desired version back from the dead. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/DOWNLOADS/features/Christmas-countdown/wunderlist-470-75.jpgThe festive season is a time for getting things done. There are presents to buy, cards to write, people to visit, food to buy and so much more. Keeping on top of it all requires a little organisation and if you are struggling, Wunderlist could be the tool that you need to stay sane. Break down your Christmas tasks into easy to manage lists, and Wunderlist will help ensure that you don't forget to do anything. From shopping lists to remembering what order to put food in the oven, there's plenty that could be forgotten, so why leave it to chance? Like Evernote, there are versions of Wunderlist available for mobile devices, so you can create a shopping list on your computer and access it on your phone. Even better, you can share lists with other people so you can easily delegate tasks to other people and help ease the pressure. If you think you might forget to look at the lists you create, you can set a reminder so you are alerted whenever you need to do something – so there'll be no chance of anything going wrong! http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/417d94da/sc/36/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/215951385744/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/417d94da/sc/36/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/215951385744/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/417d94da/sc/36/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/215951385744/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/417d94da/sc/36/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/215951385744/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/417d94da/sc/36/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/215951385744/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/417d94da/sc/36/a2t.img
