http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/software/Microsoft/Windows%2010/press/windows10-family-470-75.jpgProductivity and continuityBy this time tomorrow, January 21, Microsoft will have revealed its battle plan for the future of Windows. Meanwhile, rivals Apple and Google have been updating and refining their operating systems with clear strategies in mind - long before Redmond's latest was even announced. Sure, the marching orders regarding Windows 10 were issued a long time ago. Regardless there are three clear fronts on which Microsoft should be fighting this battle, given its position and resources: productivity in the browser, continuity across platforms and home entertainment. If there's even the tiniest chance that Microsoft isn't already prepared to exchange blows on these three fronts, then I'm terribly underpaid. Here are the three key ways in which Microsoft is finally prepared to face off with Apple and Google in the OS wars. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/TRBC/office_365-420-90.jpg Office 365 vs Drive vs iWork – ready … fight!Microsoft has been plugging away on Office 365, the web-based version of its productivity suite, for years now publicly. Yet still, amid increases to storage and new or improved features like document co-authoring, the service doesn't quite stack up to Google Drive. You could argue that Office 365 was Microsoft's retort to Google's collection of browser-powered productivity apps, but it's still lacking something. That thing is integration. What makes Google Drive so simple to use is its deep integration with Chrome, Google's Internet Explorer competitor. It's high time that Microsoft leverages its users' accounts at the app level - beyond a customized MSN homepage upon login. Like Chrome, the new IE (known currently as "Spartan") should prominently feature Office 365 apps and integrate them across the ecosystem. Since Windows already supports Microsoft accounts for login, there should be no need for the same login when opening IE and Office 365. Plus, the Office apps should have their place either on the menu bar or a default homepage. Frankly, there isn't much to be done for Microsoft to bring Office 365 and Internet Explorer to 100% parity with Google Drive and Chrome. Meanwhile, Redmond is already way ahead of Apple's iWork for iCloud in this regard. The Cupertino firm seems to see web-based document creation and editing as an extension of its core apps, not the end game like Google already has and Microsoft should. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Microsoft/Windows%20Phone%2081%20hands%20on/Review/wp81-1-420-90.jpg Continuity? Why not just one OS?Apple made waves during its Mac OS X Yosemite and iOS 8 announcements last year over an initiative it's simply calling "Continuity". The idea is for MacBooks and iMacs to work more seamlessly with iOS devices. So far, this is has boiled down to picking up where you've left off in an email or Safari webpage on your iPhone from your MacBook when they're nearby, or answering phone calls to your iPhone from your MacBook. Meanwhile, Google is working on allowing Android phones to unlock Chromebooks simply through proximity, bringing Android apps to Chrome OS and pushing Android notification to the Chrome OS desktop, among other projects. It's safe to say that Apple and Google have similar ideas for how mobile devices and laptops or desktops should work together. Continuity continued and the almighty XboxMicrosoft, on the other hand, wants it all in the family - one OS to rule them all. Windows 10 is expected to work the same way (or close) across PCs, tablets and smartphones. For all intents and purposes, all Windows 10 devices will be using the same operating system. Basically, this would mean that apps written for a Windows tablet would work just the same on a Windows Phone 10 device or laptop, of course optimized for each where it makes sense. But ultimately, that's up to the developer, which leads me to the key - or what should be the key - in Microsoft's one OS plan. If there's a single operating system, there only need be a single app store. Ideally, Microsoft would offer one store in which we, the users, could purchase a single app and expect it to work on our Windows 10 phone in addition to our Windows 10 laptop. And if all apps are built on the same codebase, the onus is then on the developers to create cross-platform solutions - not sit around and wait for Microsoft to write in the functionality they need. There's a clear trend toward creating a circular computing ecosystem starting and ending with the desktop or laptop and mobile devices everywhere in between. With its single OS plan, Microsoft is in an excellent position to capitalize on this trend faster than its competition without having to do much at all beyond releasing the thing. It's like the great Steve Ballmer once said: developers, developers, developers, developers, develop ... you get the point. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/games_consoles/Xbox%20One/March%20update%20studio%20photos/DSC_0107-420-90.jpg X(box) marks the spotNot to overstate it, but Microsoft's secret weapon in its bout with Apple and Google could very well be what almost was a flop: Xbox One. Well, not the device specifically, but what Microsoft can, and should, do around the services and software available on the console. Basically, Microsoft would be sorely remiss not to bring Xbox Live - the company's online gaming network for the console - to Windows 10 in some form or fashion. For too long has Microsoft let services like Valve's Steam and EA's Origin gobble up the PC gaming pie when it had the whole kit and caboodle all along. Expanding Xbox Live's store, party chat, matchmaking et al to work across PC and Xbox One would be a boon to gamers and game makers. Imagine buying a game on Xbox One and, if it supports it, PC for one price - with cloud-stored game saves working between both. Or what about taking an Xbox Live party from a PC-only game to an Xbox One-only game without even disconnecting? Here's another scenario: Say you're watching a movie on your Windows 10 tablet through Xbox Video on the commute home from work. The train arrives at your stop before the movie is through and you need to pause. While there are similar solutions, it would be convenient for your Xbox One's Xbox Video app to pick up on that video where you left off through information sent over your Wi-Fi network upon entering the door. Catering to the gamers is one thing that neither Apple nor Google has any means of doing on a remotely serious level (the film crowd is another story). With some serious integration with Xbox Live, Xbox Video and more, Windows 10 could become a home entertainment powerhouse. But frankly, only on all of these fronts combined does Microsoft have a chance of winning back those jaded by Windows 8.1 - or winning over the Mac OS crowd or Google lovers. We'll see soon enough whether Redmond and I are on the same page. Can Windows 10 and Xbox One erase the divide in gaming?http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/4287ea0f/sc/5/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/218610820004/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4287ea0f/sc/5/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/218610820004/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4287ea0f/sc/5/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/218610820004/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4287ea0f/sc/5/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/218610820004/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4287ea0f/sc/5/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/218610820004/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4287ea0f/sc/5/a2t.img

Why you need itIf there's something wrong with your computer, it's not always obvious what the problem is. Even experienced PC users can be stumped by a faulty computer, which makes CrystalDiskInfo such a useful program. Get it up and running and it displays the S.M.A.R.T. information of your PC – that stands for Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology, and it lets you see exactly what's ailing your computer. CrystalDiskInfo breaks this down and makes it easy to know exactly whether a drive is too hot or whether your computer is in general good health or is about to lay down and die. Even better, this useful little app can automatically send you alerts if a problem arises, meaning you can quickly address the problem before any serious damage is caused. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/DOWNLOADS/roundups/2015-Jan/Productivity-tools/Productivity-main-470-75.jpgWork can be engrossing. Enthralling. A platform where you learn more about the world, and yourself. But let's be realistic: most of the time it's just a chore which you'd like to complete just as quickly as possible. Good productivity tools can really help – and we've found 10 of the best. Whether you want to generate more ideas, plan a project, work better with others, minimise distractions or just make the best possible use of your time, there's something for you here. 1. XMindIf you're having trouble starting your project, give XMind a try. This comprehensive mind mapping tool helps you to express, structure and organise your ideas, then present them in attractive, professional diagrams. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/DOWNLOADS/roundups/2015-Jan/Productivity-tools/XMind-420-90.jpg The program is surprisingly versatile. Click File > New and you're presented with templates for To Do lists, flow charts, timelines, cause and effect diagrams, project plans, org charts, plus even more personal projects like weight-loss programs or travel plans. Once you've finished, there are options to export your work as images or HTML files, and you can even save the project to Evernote for easy access anywhere. 2. WunderlistWhether you're shopping for groceries, planning a wedding or building an airport, you'll probably start the same way: with a list. Wunderlist makes this easy. Type items and press Enter to add them, click a checkbox when they're done. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/DOWNLOADS/roundups/2015-Jan/Productivity-tools/Wunderlist-420-90.jpg But you can also highlight important items and give them due dates or reminders. Lists may be shared with family and friends, and a persistent text chat feature acts like a simple web forum, allowing everyone to make comments and give advice on your various list items. Factor in real-time syncing of lists across all your devices and the ability to make lists public with one click, and this is one powerful tool. Go download it immediately. 3. LibreOfficeEveryone needs a good Office suite, and LibreOffice is one of the best – and it's totally free. With a powerful word processor, spreadsheet, presentation tool, database, drawing and flowcharting application, there's something here for almost every need. Whatever you're doing, tools like a chart builder and mathematical formula editor help to produce professional, top-quality results. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/DOWNLOADS/roundups/2015-Jan/Productivity-tools/LibreOffice-420-90.jpg The program can open and save all Microsoft Office file types – Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations or Visio drawings – allowing you to collaborate on projects with friends or colleagues. Better still, regular updates mean LibreOffice is improving all the time. For example, presentations don't have to be boring flat slides – they can now include animated 3D models. 4. Cold TurkeyFacebook, Twitter, YouTube – it's hard to get work done when there are so many online distractions, but Cold Turkey may be able to help. Just give this clever free tool a list of the most tempting websites and it'll block access to them all for the time period you specify. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/DOWNLOADS/roundups/2015-Jan/Productivity-tools/ColdTurkey-420-90.jpg Whatever browser you're using, the results are the same – enter one of the forbidden URLs before the time is up and you'll be told that the site is unavailable. The terminally lazy could still browse from their phones, of course, but Cold Turkey is still a useful way to remove common PC temptations. 5. GanttProjectTime is money, especially for large-scale and business projects, so if you're taking on a complex task then it's important to use the right software. GanttProject is an industrial-strength cross-platform (Windows, OS X, Linux) project manager that provides everything you need to stay in control. Create and organise tasks, add milestones, set priorities and costs, allocate resources, monitor your colleague's workload: it's all here. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/DOWNLOADS/roundups/2015-Jan/Productivity-tools/GanttProject-420-90.jpg Well-presented Gantt and PERT charts keep you fully up-to-date with progress. Optional cloud storage makes it easier for others to work on the project, while capable PDF reporting helps you share the current situation with the rest of your team. 6. TeamViewerNo matter how well organised you are, sometimes you'll be in one place and the files or people you need will be somewhere else. And that's where TeamViewer comes in. Once set up, this amazingly powerful free-for-private-use tool allows you to access and use remote PCs as though you were sitting in front of them. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/DOWNLOADS/roundups/2015-Jan/Productivity-tools/TeamViewer-420-90.jpg You can hold web meetings with audio, video and text chat, a whiteboard, file sharing and more (meetings can even be recorded for reference later). Best of all, you can do this from almost any device. TeamViewer has clients for Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iPhone and iPad, and you can attend meetings through your web browser without installing any software at all. 7. LaunchyWindows has given us Explorer, the taskbar, Start Menu and the Start Screen, yet it can still take an age to find the files you need. Launchy aims to change all that by indexing your core files and allowing you to launch them with a few keystrokes. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/DOWNLOADS/roundups/2015-Jan/Productivity-tools/Launchy-420-90.jpg To use the program, press Alt+Space and start typing whatever you're looking for: an application, file, folder, document or bookmark. As you type each key, Launchy displays its best match; press Enter when this is correct and the application, file or folder will be launched right away. The program also includes a simple calculator (try typing 2+2=), and a range of plugins provides even more power. 8. Mozilla LightningMozilla's Thunderbird isn't just a great email client. Add Lightning's comprehensive scheduler and it becomes an open-source Outlook, a powerful tool for getting your life in order. At Lightning's heart is a well-designed calendar. Add one-off or recurring events, set up reminders, even invite friends or family to join in. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/DOWNLOADS/roundups/2015-Jan/Productivity-tools/Lightning-420-90.jpg It's just as easy to set up tasks, attach web pages or documents and set a priority or status to help manage your activities. Working with others? Lightning can import and export calendars in the popular ICS format, or you can publish your calendar for everyone to view in a couple of clicks. 9. EvernoteProductivity isn't just about getting more done at your desk. Ideas and inspiration can happen anywhere, which is why you need Evernote to tie them all together. Whether it's a quick to-do list or a lengthy essay, you can add it to your Evernote workspace. Grab photos, screenshots, links, the interesting bits of a web article – anything that can help with your current projects. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/DOWNLOADS/roundups/2015-Jan/Productivity-tools/Evernote-420-90.jpg Any note can have a "reminder" attached, optionally sending an email alert for important tasks. Smart search tools scour everything you've collected to find the details you need. And Notebooks can be synced across all your devices as required, enabling you to view and work on them anywhere. 10. PhraseExpressHow much time do you waste typing the same words and phrases over and over and over again? The free (for personal use) PhraseExpress saves keystrokes by expanding abbreviations into full text snippets. "ADR" could expand to your address, "SIG" might be your email signature, "RPLY" could become "Dear customer, Thank you very much for contacting us". Snippets may include formatting, pictures, tables and more, and you're able to paste them into almost any application. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/DOWNLOADS/roundups/2015-Jan/Productivity-tools/PhraseExpress-420-90.jpg That's great – but it's just the start. PhraseExpress also learns and automatically auto-completes full sentences on demand. There's a system-wide spellchecker, a clipboard manager, calculator, program launcher and much, much more. http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/4282ef4f/sc/4/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/218610833539/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4282ef4f/sc/4/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/218610833539/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4282ef4f/sc/4/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/218610833539/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4282ef4f/sc/4/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/218610833539/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4282ef4f/sc/4/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/218610833539/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4282ef4f/sc/4/a2t.img

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/mobile_phones/Nokia/Lumia1520/Review/lumia-1520-review-34-470-75.jpgMicrosoft might be about to annihilate its apps problem, as it's now rumoured that the company is considering allowing Android apps to run on its Windows Phone handsets. Microsoft has so far failed to become a big mobile player, with users flocking instead to iOS and Android. There are any number of reasons for that but one of the biggest is surely the more developed app stores that Microsoft's two biggest competitors have. Not only do Apple and Google's stores have more apps but they even have some high profile apps which Windows Phone lacks. App overloadSo allowing Android apps to run alongside native ones could be the solution and that's exactly what the company is discussing, according to a former Microsoft employee as reported by The Information. That would give Windows Phone instant access to a far greater number of apps, and could prove particularly tempting to Android users who could make the jump without losing any of their favourites. But even if Microsoft is considering it, it may not go ahead, as the flip side is that developers would be less likely to make apps specifically for Windows Phone when the Android version is already compatible, which could prove enormously damaging to the Windows Phone Store. So it would be a gamble, but from a user's perspective it could only be a good thing. We could also see Windows Phone apps on Windows 10.http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/4282ef53/sc/4/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/218610833538/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4282ef53/sc/4/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/218610833538/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4282ef53/sc/4/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/218610833538/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4282ef53/sc/4/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/218610833538/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4282ef53/sc/4/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/218610833538/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4282ef53/sc/4/a2t.img

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/software/Apple/iOS%208/iOS%208%20screens-470-75.jpgThe iPhone 6S could come with 2GB of RAM, double the amount found in the iPhone 6, which has been criticised by some people as too meagre. The rumour comes from supply chain sources speaking to Taiwan's Tech News. That extra power is exciting in itself, but it begs the question of what Apple intends to do with it, given that the iPhone 6 already delivers brilliant performance. The answer may lie in iOS 9. Forbes theorises that as Apple is unlikely to double the RAM unless it was necessary there could be a big overhaul coming to iOS 9 which would make 2GB of RAM beneficial. Following the cycleIt's not just the possible upping of the RAM that points to major changes though, as iOS tends to follow a similar update cycle to the iPhone, with a major upgrade one year, followed by a more minor one focused on tweaks and optimisations the next. iOS 8 delivered tweaks to the overhaul found in iOS 7, so now with iOS 9 we should theoretically be in for another massive change and having twice as much RAM in the iPhone 6S certainly supports that. Though it's not clear what form that change will take. Of course presumably it would still have to run okay on phones with just 1GB of RAM, but with the 512MB of RAM toting iPhone 4S likely to be the next iDevice to stop receiving updates it could be that less than 1GB won't cut it. All of this is just speculation for now and even the 2GB of RAM rumours might not pan out, especially as it's quite a lot pricier than the RAM Apple is currently using, but if this theory does turn out to be right then iOS 9 could be very exciting indeed. Could the iPhone 6S be getting a sapphire display too?http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/428118e7/sc/5/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/218610794038/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/428118e7/sc/5/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/218610794038/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/428118e7/sc/5/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/218610794038/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/428118e7/sc/5/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/218610794038/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/428118e7/sc/5/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/218610794038/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/428118e7/sc/5/a2t.img

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/TRBC/Abstract/Magnifying%20glass%20on%20danger/Magnifying%20glass%20on%20danger-470-75.jpgFrom Heartbleed and Shellshock to the Target breach and the Sony hack, last year was littered with high-profile cyber threats and security breaches. The dire consequences an attack can have on a business have become increasingly apparent, as poor response to security breaches has led to the resignation of senior staff and even companies going out of business. In 2015, the frequency and severity of cyber-attacks will continue to increase – and organisations will have to explore new approaches in responding to cyber-attacks. These are my predictions on how cybercrime will manifest itself this year, and how the cyber-security industry will develop in response. Increase in the frequency and scale of attacksEach year, the frequency and severity of cyber-attacks increases, and there is no reason to think that 2015 will buck this trend. Europe may appear to be relatively unscathed so far, but this is probably because public disclosure is not generally required as it is in the US. In 2015, however, there will be an attack on the scale of the Target breach – so large and far reaching that it can't be swept under the carpet. The consequence will be harsher measures imposed on companies within the EU who are not adequately prepared for security breaches. And, as in the US, it's possible we will see CSOs or even CEOs lose their jobs as a result. Cybercrime: a booming industryCybercrime will continue to boom in 2015, and we'll see even more eager criminals enter the profession. The reason for this is simple: cybercrime pays, and the rewards heavily outweigh the risks. This isn't because there aren't harsh punishments for those who are caught (Albert Gonzalez, the TJX attack mastermind, is still serving his twenty year sentence), but because the likelihood of being caught is very small in comparison to other serious crimes. Furthermore, there is a very low cost of entry for cybercriminals – the tools needed to attack even the most comprehensive security systems are incredibly cheap when compared to what could be gained. Until cybercrime is less rewarding, this trend is likely to continue. Response takes centre stageIn 2015 organisations will finally begin to realise that there is no silver bullet for cyber-security – yet another shiny security technology won't save us (just as the last ones didn't). Rather than continuing to focus resources on prevention and detection, firms will focus attention on response and developing resilience – the ability to weather the inevitable incidents as just another part of doing business. A new rise in espionage and hacktivism The SandWorm zero-day exploit made big headlines when its discovery was revealed in October of last year – partially because of the technical implications, but also because of the impact. At least one hacking group used the vulnerability to target critical infrastructure, a trend that will continue in 2015. Although hacktivism failed to dominate the headlines in 2014, it has always been cyclical. With several conflicts persisting around the world, and given a controversial general election this year in the UK, we should expect renewed momentum in this kind of malicious activity. Threat sharing becomes more prevalentThreat intelligence and threat knowledge-sharing shows growing promise, representing a real opportunity to turn the tables on the bad guys. But there are a number of obstacles to its success, including the relative quality of the data involved and how complicated it can be to share. In 2015 we will see improvements here, particularly with the work that NIST is doing in the U.S. We also expect the ISO to release some Incident Response Management guidelines this year. Humans and computers take security to the next levelWe've learnt by now that technology is no panacea. Therefore getting the balance of how humans and machines work together will be increasingly important. Studies of chess masters and supercomputers have shown that a computer alone, no matter how powerful, can still be overcome. Indeed the best approach teams up good chess players with a computer. This same approach can and will be applied to security –particularly incident response. Security solutions still lack the judgement needed to ensure the cure prescribed isn't worse than the disease it's intended to address. The ideal approach will leverage computers for information collection and analysis, but rely on humans to fine-tune the response. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/software/Windows/inconspicuous_mode_patent-470-75.jpg"Do not disturb" modes are nothing new, but Microsoft's newest patented feature proposes making it a lot smarter - and potentially more useful. The "inconspicuous mode," spotted by Twitter user Patent Yogi, would detect when a user is in a theater, meeting or other place they'd like their smartphones to shut up, and automatically turn their volume and brightness down. The mode also reportedly would reduce the number of notifications on your lockscreen for when you're tempted to glance at your phone anyway. It could detect where you are by paying attention to GPS, NFC and Wi-Fi signals, as well as users' calendars and browser histories, to determine when you're in a no-phone-zone. Microsoft is expected to make some big reveals regarding Windows 10 and the future of Windows Phone this Wednesday, January 21, so maybe we'll see this feature then. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/Watches/Apple%20Watch/official%20images/AppleWatch-official20-470-75.jpgAnnounced back in September 2014, Apple Watch is set to launch somewhere between "soon" and "fairly soon". We already know about its crown-packing hardware, and the perception is that it'll galvanise the wearable and smartwatch sectors by its very presence, with analysts rubbing their hands with glee and saying things like "30 million sales in the first year". We'll see about that, but one thing's for sure: there will be apps. Here are 14 we are certain you'll see on launch day, whether from the Watch App Store from third parties, or preloaded (and irksomely impossible to remove), from Apple. Can't wait for your smartwatch software fix? For a roundup of our favourite Android Wear apps you can actually buy right now, head here. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Watches/Best%20Apple%20Watch%20apps/Health%20copy-420-90.jpg 1 Apple HealthOne of the main reasons for Watch is for Apple to corner the health market, hence the Watch's miscellany of sensors including infrared LEDs, photo sensors, gyroscope and accelerometer. It'll be hoovering your heartbeat, activity and steps, to shout at you to get active, stand up and walk to McDonalds and then even have words with your doctor about your poor regime, if Apple's plans come to fruition. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Watches/Best%20Apple%20Watch%20apps/facebook_logo%20copy-420-90.jpg 2 FacebookIf they can figure out how to streamline sending check-ins and status updates from wrists that isn't a counterintuitive chore, Facebook should fly on the Watch. Zuckerberg and co are getting pretty good at making their app work on mobile platforms, and we expect this to be no different on the Watch. Imagine how much money they're currently throwing at this particular UI challenge. Excellent. Now double it. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Watches/Best%20Apple%20Watch%20apps/Music%20copy-420-90.jpg 3 MusicAnother no brainer, one of the first things you'll do when you fire up your Watch loudly and ostentatiously in the pub, is control your tunes from your wrist, and pausing, fast forwarding and scrolling through playlists will be one of the most fingerprint-collecting tasks this thing will be performing. Make it your friend immediately. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Watches/Best%20Apple%20Watch%20apps/twitter%20copy-420-90.jpg 4 Twitter140 characters is a fine number of characters for a screen so small. Almost a perfect number of characters for a screen so small. Micro blogging will do well on the Watch, with any attached pictures supplying backgrounds to Tweets and retweeting, dismissing or – the poor man's passive/aggressive like – favouriting all done with one, triumphant finger. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Watches/Best%20Apple%20Watch%20apps/passbook%20copy-420-90.jpg 5 PassbookThis won't just be Passbook as you know it, even though that's already a hugely handy app for things such as boarding passes and... erm, well boarding passes. Passbook will also hold Pay, Apple's contactless means of paying for stuff with just a tap of your watch. Visa have committed to bringing Pay to iPhones in "early 2015" so it should be a formality to extend this to Watch, which is also due in "early 2015". http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Watches/Best%20Apple%20Watch%20apps/Whatsapp%20copy-420-90.jpg 6 WhatsappWith news that Whatsapp has passed SMS in terms of traffic, statistically the way you'll most probably pick up messages is a discreet buzz to the wrist and a Whatsapp notification glance. Because who needs privacy anyway when you can send LOLs, ROFLings and BAEs free? http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Watches/Best%20Apple%20Watch%20apps/Instagram%20copy-420-90.jpg 7 InstagramAs we saw from the demo, this will boast thumbnails of picture slideshows scale so small, only peregrine falcons can see them on the small screen, but the 42mm window is perfect for Instagram's speedy peak into what Kanye West and Kim Kardashian are taking photos of this morning. We'd expect remote control of your iPhone's camera too, on this and all other photo-related apps. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Watches/Best%20Apple%20Watch%20apps/Google%20Maps%20copy-420-90.jpg 8 Google mapsThe small screen will make searching similar to needles in haystacks, but fire up a route on your phone, and you should be able to stride off, confident that you'll be able to navigate to your destination via a combination of on-screen map directions and wrist buzzes (one for left, two for right, maybe?) with consummate ease, sharing your location with chums along the way. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Watches/Best%20Apple%20Watch%20apps/bmw-i%20copy-420-90.jpg 9 BMW iAt CES 2015, BMW demonstrated an app which, at the touch of a button, tells your i3 electric car to run along and park itself. That's a wee while away, but BMW will have a companion app for their leccy motor which will communicate your car's charge remaining, time to full charge, available range, lock and unlock the doors and navigate you to where it's currently sitting. We'd expect similar apps from Hyundai, Audi and the rest of the CarPlay brigade. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Watches/Best%20Apple%20Watch%20apps/Guardian%20copy-420-90.jpg 10 The GuardianAlready a big hit on Android Wear, if this isn't an Apple Watch launch app we'll smash our iPhones with hammers*. The Guardian is pleasingly and dependably tech savvy, and that's reflected in this app, which throws up a breaking news "glance" as stories happen, which you can then investigate on your iPhone if you want, or dismiss if it's not a new iPhone 7 rumour. (*No we won't really). http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Watches/Best%20Apple%20Watch%20apps/Flashlight%20copy-420-90.jpg 11 FlashlightThe Android Wear incarnation of this hardy smartphone perennial is currently sitting on a rock solid four-star review (via 677 reviewers, not just the developer and his mum). If the Apple Watch is a tenth as bright as the retina-burning, seen-from-orbit Moto 360, a flashlight app will be an obvious early app. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Watches/Best%20Apple%20Watch%20apps/Jawbone%20Up%20copy-420-90.jpg 12 Jawbone UpJawbone's excellent fitness tracking app, only without the Up fitness tracker. It's already available as an iOS app, and the Apple Watch has more sensors than the fitness band packs, so this will be Up, only uppier. Incorporates a "smart coach" (how could being told off by an app ever get old?), links to diet and calorie counting apps and also plays nice with Apple Health. We'd anticipate all the big fitness-tracking players (Fitbit, Withings, Runtastic, Nike et al) to be joining Jawbone in the App Store, too. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Watches/Best%20Apple%20Watch%20apps/Dominos%20copy-420-90.jpg 13 Domino's Pizza TrackerAlternatively, forget the above and order your Mighty Meaty, Chicken Strippers, cheesy garlic bread, Potato Wedges, 'slaw and full fat Coke and get a buzzy update every time your meal passes a delivery milestone. Pair with HealthKit apps to make sure you're not overdoing it… http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Watches/Best%20Apple%20Watch%20apps/Pipes%20copy-420-90.jpg 14 PipesNews aggregating app uses a bespoke algorithm to edit better than human editors, summarising "pipes" (news feeds of your choice: Man United, iPhone 7, Star Wars etc) that you've set up, with a pic and a few, choice words. Dismiss or save for later as is your wont. "Know less and more at the same time," the devs say, enigmatically.http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/42779f84/sc/28/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/219132033854/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/42779f84/sc/28/kg/392/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/219132033854/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/42779f84/sc/28/kg/392/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/219132033854/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/42779f84/sc/28/kg/392/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/219132033854/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/42779f84/sc/28/kg/392/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/219132033854/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/42779f84/sc/28/kg/392/a2t.img

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/Watches/Motorola/Moto%20360/Review/moto-360-glympse-470-75.jpgAndroid Wear apps 1-5Launched less than a year ago, Android Wear is now coming into its early golden age with devices such as Sony's Smart Watch 3, LG's G Watch R, Motorola's Moto 360 and more. There are now several hundred apps available for the OS, augmenting your Android Wearable's powers beyond the standard notifications 'n' fitness realm. Here are 20 of your favourites, in no particular order… http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Watches/Best%20Wear%20apps/Wear%20Faces-420-90.jpg 1. UhrArt WearFacesFree One of the simplest yet key USPs of a smartwatch is being able to customise the display. This app lets you pick from a packed gallery of round or square faces from the WearFace community - http://wearfaces.com/featured/ - and you can also create and share your own designs. An essential first purchase for any new Android Wear user. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Watches/Best%20Wear%20apps/Wear%20Mini%20Launcher%20copy-420-90.jpg 2. Wear Mini LauncherFree Opening and using an app on an Android Wear device can be fiddly; this takes the hassle away by letting you quickly launch any app without heaps of scrolling and swiping. It also helps you quickly access settings, such as brightness, Wi-Fi and ringtones for your smartphone, while granting access to loads of customisation options. Hundreds of thousands of downloads can't be wrong. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Watches/Best%20Wear%20apps/Tinder%20copy-420-90.jpg 3. TinderFree You know the deal: swipe right to like, left to pass, like a horny modern day Roman Emperor. But what you might not know is that the phenomenon that is Tinder and Android Wear is a match made in heaven. Just say "Start Tinder" to start swiping, send messages and view profiles all from the privacy of your wrist. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Watches/Best%20Wear%20apps/IFTTT%20copy-420-90.jpg 4. IFTTTFree Named as one of Google's best apps of 2014, IFTTT stands for "If This Then That" and lets you link your 'Channels' - i.e. Facebook, Instagram, Gmail etc - by creating 'Recipes'. So, for instance, you can set things up so when you like an Instagram photo it's instantly saved to your Dropbox. You can do this, get alerts and more straight from your Wear device. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Watches/Best%20Wear%20apps/Flopsy-Droid%20copy-420-90.jpg 5. Flopsy DroidFree Billed on Google Play as "an experimental game inspired by a certain other Bird-based game", the graphical style and aim of this side-scrolling title will probably ring some bells (hint: it's Flappy Bird). Fine tuned for Android Wear devices, you must navigate a floppily limbed droid through a series of pipes to rack up the points. So long, social life, we hardly knew ye. Android Wear apps 6-10http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Watches/Best%20Wear%20apps/Glympse%20copy-420-90.jpg 6. GlympseFree Over a million Android users swear by this location-tracking app, which lets you keep in touch with friends and family, helping you safely find and notify of your exact whereabouts. The Android Wear optimisation lets you view any active Glympse simply by swiping, and you can easily send info to social media accounts and to your contacts without touching your phone. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Watches/Best%20Wear%20apps/Evernote%20copy-420-90.jpg 7. EvernoteFree The hugely popular productivity app lets you view all those notes and checklists while your phone stays pocketed. Create new notes using voice commands, tick off completed tasks by simply tapping, find entries by speaking the text you're searching for and receive calendar event alerts on your display. Your very own digital secretary right at your fingertips. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Watches/Best%20Wear%20apps/WearCalc%20copy-420-90.jpg 8. WearCalcFree Harking back to the mathematical Casio wristwear of yore, which what many of us would consider our first foray into the world of the 'smartwatch', WearCalc lifts the burden of complex sums and restaurant tip calculations from your phone and gifts the responsibility to your timepiece, complete with a stylish, clean design. 9. DuolingoFree Another of Google's picks for best apps of 2014, Duolingo on Android Wear lets you learn another language on the go, for free. You basically earn achievements by answering linguistic conundrums correctly in fun, bite-size lessons. The Android Wear application keeps it simple, displaying flashcards for you to have a go at when you're, say, on the bus. Take enough bus rides and one day you'll realise you're fluent in French. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/Watches/Best%20Wear%20apps/Advanced%20Wear%20Visualizer-420-90.jpg 10. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/internet/Internet%20Of%20Things/internet_of_things-470-75.jpgThe Internet of Things (IoT) enables us to connect every device we own to the internet. This could be linking light bulbs to the web, or even the dishwasher, coffee machine and doorbell. Looking outside the home, commercial applications of IoT devices include sensors in plant machinery, or biochips in farm animals, all the way to sensors in the ground detecting temperature and moisture content in sports fields. Not only will every device with a circuit board have some kind of connection with the internet, but so will those systems we might never have considered to be electrical a decade ago. This interconnected world produces a number of hurdles for the internet in its current state. We've already heard about core infrastructure upgrades taking place to move from IPv4 to IPv6 to cater for all of these additional addressable devices. So we have seen bandwidths increasing not only across fixed lines but also, more importantly, over wireless connections as well, such as LTE. These are critical to the success of IoT, but are our applications ready for the influx of additional data collection, storage and processing that they now have to handle? Ubiquitous connectivityThere are billions of new devices connecting to the internet and many billions more on their way, with Gartner predicting 26 billion connected devices by 2020. As a result, the scale of the computer systems required to manage these units has grown considerably. We've seen this in the past few years with the growth of the number of smartphones and tablets, and how enterprise IT departments have had to scale to handle these additional devices on their networks as well as within their applications. For instance, they're now having to consider additional software licenses, increased RAM, enhanced CPUs, more storage and faster networking to name a few. Managing these ever increasing demands, as well as providing a scalable and highly available service is a tough ask. But there are a number of technology solutions coming to the forefront to help address these issues. What is PaaS?Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) provides a mechanism that allows enterprises to control the whole application environment from a single place. Leveraging the investment in the virtualised layer of Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), the PaaS sits on top and uses the required infrastructure resources. This enables application developers to build applications without worrying about the execution environment of the app, or how to scale it or provide high availability. The application describes to the PaaS the resources that it needs to run and the operator of the platform controls how much memory and storage the application requires from a management console. Choosing a language There are a number of programming languages available to develop applications, and different languages can be used in tandem to meet business needs. For example, developers can write a high throughput Node.js application that uses Web Sockets to serve their clients within the same PaaS as they are running a Java application that executes CPU intensive image manipulation. Establishing controlOperators are able to manage how a deployed application behaves and what resources it has access to. From a single place, the operator has complete control over the runtime characteristics of an application, what data sources it has access to, what compute it's permitted to use and how to handle failures. For example, if there was a sudden increase in site traffic due to a marketing push, adding additional instances of the application could be handled via a single click, or it could be automatically handled in some cases (although down-scaling is hard to predict precisely). PaaS also gives the developer control over the services that their applications can access. This is critical in IoT application development as the volume of sensor data that is expected to be transmitted over the network is increasing, and as a result, the ingestion of this data needs to be controlled. The PaaS provides another abstraction layer where the data providers can be separated from the applications accessing them, meaning the amount of throughput for each application can be easily governed. A high throughput example would be an application that ingests data from sensors distributed around a railway network, where the processing and storage of this data is not only business critical but also potentially harmful to life if it's not handled expediently. At the other end of the scale, a lower class of application that is storing data collected from dishwashers and processing it to provide better servicing plans to customers wouldn't require such high throughput compute and storage. As IoT becomes an increasingly integral part of everyday life, so too does the ability to securely receive data from everywhere, process it quickly, store it and scale as business demands dictate. Those businesses that take advantage of new technologies such as PaaS will be able to control and scale their business needs to meet the increasing demands of their customers. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/other/Tizen-470-75.jpgAfter years of development, Samsung finally has its first Tizen-powered smartphone on the market in the form of the Z1. The company is promising that's just "the tip of the iceberg" though, and "a flood of devices" are on the way in 2015. Does that make Android the Titanic, about to run aground on Samsung's own OS? Perhaps. Samsung's Mingi Hyun has written a lengthy blog post on the company's plans for Tizen and its advantages over Android. "Tizen is 'lighter' than other operating systems," says Hyun, explaining that this lightness of touch means it can do more with less processing power and memory - something you can't really say about TouchWiz. Bring your own OSHyun says Tizen will be coming to smart appliances and smart TVs in the near future, and that the company is working hard building out an ecosystem that can connect all of these devices. Samsung wants to get all of its hardware hooked up to the web in the next five years. Google and Apple can still come to the party, though. "We also remain open to other operating systems," promises Hyun. "We also value the relationships we have built with our partners, as these relationships have helped us discover more ways to improve the user experience of our devices." Considering Samsung sold 665 million bits of kit in 2014, Tizen could get a foothold in the market very quickly if Samsung decides to go all-in with its own OS. With LG expanding its use of webOS as well, Google is going to have to stay on its toes as all of our devices get smarter. Tizen: The operating system that could thwart Android?

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/DOWNLOADS/roundups/2015-Jan/PC-fitness/Sandra-470-75.jpgNew Year is when many of us head for the gym to work off all those mince pies, but a January boot camp doesn't just benefit humans – it can be good for your PC, too. A regular cleanup can do wonders for your PC and make it the lean, mean machine it was when you bought it – and making your PC better can make you more productive too. Here are some of the apps that can help get your PC back in peak condition. 1. SiSoftware SandraSandra is the electronic equivalent of getting a full medical check: it analyses your PC and lets you know how well each part of it is performing, producing benchmarks that you can then compare against similar systems. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/DOWNLOADS/roundups/2015-Jan/PC-fitness/Sandra-420-90.jpg It can tell you the state of your hard disk, analyse the speed of your network, let you know if any part of your system is delivering less than stellar performance or identify conflicts between bits of your system, and while it's probably a little over the top for casual computer users, it's a great tool for PC power users and the insatiably curious. 2. CCleanerRunning CCleaner on your PC is like sweeping it with a brush: it gets rid of the dust and cruft that can accumulate over time and that can make your PC work harder and/or use up more disk space than it really needs to. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/DOWNLOADS/roundups/2015-Jan/PC-fitness/CCleaner-420-90.jpg The app makes it simple to get rid of temporary internet files, system files and unwanted installers, clear log files and remove redundant Registry entries, clear applications' temporary files and prevent unwanted apps from running when Windows starts. It's simple, user-friendly and very quick, and there's a portable version if you want to run it from a flash drive or CD. 3. CrystalDiskInfoWant to know what state your hard disk or solid state drive is in? Then you need to get S.M.A.R.T. It's short for Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology, and it's a system that essentially means your hard disk can tell you whether it's feeling poorly. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/DOWNLOADS/roundups/2015-Jan/PC-fitness/CrystalDiskInfo-420-90.jpg CrystalDiskInfo lets you see the S.M.A.R.T. information for your drive(s), enabling you to see whether a drive is running too hot, if it's starting to report more and more disk errors or if it's about to go boom and take all your important data with it. It's a useful tool to have. 4. DriverEasyIf you're using Windows 7 or later you can skip this one, as Windows Update does a great job of keeping your system drivers up to date. On older systems, though, staying on top of driver updates can be a pain – albeit a necessary one, as driver updates often eradicate bugs and security flaws. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/DOWNLOADS/roundups/2015-Jan/PC-fitness/Drivereasy-420-90.jpg DriverEasy promises to make the whole process painless by analysing your system and comparing what you've got to its driver database to let you know whether anything needs updated, and while it doesn't install the new drivers automatically - that's in the paid version - downloading manually isn't too much hassle. 5. Ad-Aware Free Antivirus+Ad-Aware is designed to remove unwanted programs and to prevent them from getting onto your PC in the first place from malicious websites and infected emails. It scans for viruses and other dangerous software, and it also looks for adware and spyware. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/DOWNLOADS/roundups/2015-Jan/PC-fitness/Ad-Aware-420-90.jpg The first of these is software that blasts you with unwanted ads, and the latter tracks what you're doing and uploads that information to third parties. A full scan of a typical PC can take ages, but it's worth doing – and once you've done it then the real-time protection should help keep your PC free of net nasties. 6. MP3tagIf like us you've got gigabytes of digital music on your PC, you've probably got a problem with it: the meta tags, the information that says what song is what and who did it, is often very messy. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/DOWNLOADS/roundups/2015-Jan/PC-fitness/MP3tag2-420-90.jpg MP3tag can solve that. From imposing consistency – no more will you have some songs marked REM and others R.E.M. – to correcting errors, standardising file names and downloading the correct album art for each record, MP3tag does a great job of taming even the largest, messiest MP3 collections. It works with non-MP3 music files too, with support for FLAC, AAC and more. 7. HandbrakeVideo formats fall in and out of fashion, and that means it's easy to end up with a hard disk full of clips in varying formats and in various resolutions, or a library of discs just dying to be digitised. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/DOWNLOADS/roundups/2015-Jan/PC-fitness/Handbrake-420-90.jpg Handbrake can sort it all out for you. It can convert video clips from almost any format to any other format, which is great for getting files from dying or obsolete formats into more modern ones, and it can backup DVDs and Blu-rays too. Its filters also do a pretty good job of correcting common quality problems with home movies. 8. EraserDeleting files doesn't actually delete them: your computer just marks them as "safe to overwrite" and pretends they're not there. That's not a problem unless you're dealing with information you don't want to share – for example if you're selling a computer or giving it away you might not want someone to recover your personal banking information or other personal or business data. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/DOWNLOADS/roundups/2015-Jan/PC-fitness/Eraser-420-90.jpg Say hello to Eraser, which ensures that deleted files can't be recovered by overwriting them with carefully selected patterns. It's programmable, too, so you can schedule it to run at regular intervals such as the weekend or in the wee small hours. 9. Recuva As you may have guessed from the name, Recuva does the opposite of Eraser: its job is file recovery, not file deletion. It's our go-to app for retrieving image files from corrupted camera memory cards, enabling us to recover our precious holiday snaps, but it's just as happy recovering accidentally deleted music from iPods or business documents that got trashed during a computer crash. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/DOWNLOADS/roundups/2015-Jan/PC-fitness/Recuva-420-90.jpg It can rebuild corrupted Word documents from temporary files, recover accidentally deleted emails and get files back even after hard disks have been reformatted. When things go wrong, Recuva can usually make them right again. 10. Revo Uninstaller Free Revo Uninstaller reaches the parts the default Windows uninstaller can't reach, scanning your PC for the various bits and pieces that are often left over once an app has been uninstalled, such as temporary files, user documents and redundant Registry entries. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/DOWNLOADS/roundups/2015-Jan/PC-fitness/Revo-420-90.jpg That's particularly handy if you're tight for hard disk space or tend to install lots of apps. If you need more powerful uninstallation, for example to automatically remove multiple programs at the same time or to force-uninstall a program that's refusing to go nicely, the 30-day trial of the Professional version is fully functional and gives you access to all its advanced features. http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/4259a33e/sc/4/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/218610651060/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4259a33e/sc/4/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/218610651060/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4259a33e/sc/4/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/218610651060/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4259a33e/sc/4/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/218610651060/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4259a33e/sc/4/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/218610651060/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4259a33e/sc/4/a2t.img

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/software/Windows/Windows%2010/windows-10-date-470-75.JPGMicrosoft is due to shine the spotlight on Windows 10 at its Redmond campus on January 21, and now the company has set a time for you to tune in. The event will be livestreamed on Microsoft's dedicated Windows 10 story website from 9am (Pacific) / 5pm (GMT). Don't worry if you miss it: an on-demand version will be available to view on the same page straight after. Lined up to speak alongside the company's CEO Satya Nadella are several execs from its Operating Systems Group -- including Terry Myerson, Joe Belfiore and Phil Spencer. While Technical Previews of Windows 10 have focused on how it works on the desktop, Microsoft is expected to shed light on its consumer-focused features -- in addition to how it will charge for it. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/mobile_phones/LG/LG%20G2/Review/lg-g2-review-25-470-75.jpgIt's been months since the LG G3 was graced with Android 5.0 Lollipop, and now it seems the LG G2's Lollipop update may be about to arrive too. There's no official word from LG on when Lollipop will hit the G2, but the video below shows the latest version of the Google OS - version 5.0.1 - running smoothly on the older phone. Watch it to catch a glimpse of what the LG G2 has in store, and try not to get too angry about the video's amateurish portrait orientation. Android Lollipop has been rolling out slowly but surely to Android handsets the world over, bringing with it a new Material Design look, performance improvements, UI tweaks, and more. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/internet/Internet%20Of%20Things/internet_of_things-470-75.jpgWe're still not at the point where robots are wandering the halls or our coffee is brewed upon a command sent from a cell phone, but for modern-day workers, the office is about to get a whole lot smarter. We're still not at the point where robots are wandering the halls or our coffee is brewed upon a command sent from a cell phone, but for modern-day workers, the office is about to get a whole lot smarter. Get smartMost of us already have a smartphone or some sort of connected device in our lives, or we will in the future if the arrival of wearable devices is anything to judge by. In fact, some offices are already using things like Internet connected printers and IP phone systems that allow people to video chat with coworkers. For those that are, bravo! You're well on your way, but there's still more that can be done to turn a regular office into a smart one. First off, focus on having the right tech for your team. When shopping for new equipment for your office, keep your employees' needs in mind, as well as their likes and dislikes. Are they PC-aficionados, or Mac loyalists? In the past, Microsoft ruled office environments, but now with the availability of virtual desktops and cloud applications, the hardware used by a team doesn't matter. What matters instead is that they're connected, comfortable, and productive. The cloud can help with the rest. Once you've got most of the important hardware, you can also look at extra niceties like having a smart coffee table for your employees to sit around while engaged in discussion. These tables may be a bit more expensive when compared to other necessary equipment in your office, but they serve a multitude of purposes, especially if you have a design or graphically-minded crew. For those who need the full screen of the coffee table but would prefer to mount it on the wall for presentations, Smart TVs or devices like Google's Chromecast will help make presentations and meetings more interactive and engaging. What else? Before you start picking out cloud apps, don't forget you also need to focus on the little things as well. Try installing innovative devices like Spotter, a multipurpose sensor that can detect and alert you when a package is dropped off at your business' door. No more missed package notices from the Post Office or worrying about packages being delivered when you're out. Just send off a quick message to your team or jog down to the office to pick it up yourself. While you're purchasing Spotter, don't forget to order a couple of Pivot's Power Genius strips or VixPlugs. Both of these power strips allow you to remotely control any electronic device that's plugged into the strip through an app on your smart phone. You can double check to make sure computers are shut down and the coffee pot is turned off, and by conserving electricity you can make sure that your office is not just smart, but green too. Get connectedAfter you've equipped your office with the right technology (i.e., Wi-fi printers, desktops, power strips, etc.), the most important thing about being smart, is also being connected. Your employees have to work together as a team and they have to have access to the tools they need. Your job is to provide a way for the entire office to function smoothly. In addition to providing a strong Wi-Fi connection inside the office, you'll want to look around for cloud apps that will foster creativity and encourage your employees to work together as a team. For collaboration software, you might want to check out apps like MindMeister, a brainstorming app built with team collaboration in mind, or project management software like Mijura that was built specifically for teams. There's also Google Apps for Business in case you need to provide email and document sharing software to your employees. Thanks to the cloud, all of these tools and more are available with low monthly costs, and some even come with free trials, making your decision to smarten up your office your brightest one yet! The aforementioned cloud apps are great for not only making your office smarter, but also in allowing your employees to sync up with the mother ship even when they're away on business or vacation. After all, what good would a smart office be if it couldn't be accessed remotely? The best part about having a smart office that each employee can instantaneously connect back to is finding new, exciting apps like dozeo. an online meeting software where employees can meet, take notes, view presentations, and even share in a laugh or two. Who said being smart couldn't be fun as well? The best part is anyone with an Internet connection can join with a few clicks, and the meeting can get started from anywhere at any time. Just don't forget to let your attendees know about the meeting beforehand with dozeo's handy notification system! The goal of a smart office is not just to bring IoT technology into the office in a way that saves money and frees workers from tasks that can impact productivity, but to also focus on connecting your human workers. In our already-connected world, the smart office is well on its way to becoming a reality and thanks to the cloud, it could already be here for you. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/DOWNLOADS/utilities/Defraggler/Dotd-34-Defraggler-470-75.jpgDefragging your PC is an often-overlooked method to get it back up to speed, but it's a great idea to do it; Defraggler is the ideal tool when it comes to this task. Why you need itThe longer you use your PC, the more data gets written to it in the form of 'blocks' – and the more these blocks get split up. This is known as 'fragmentation', and it can cause your computer to slow down as it goes looking for these blocks that are scattered about the hard drive. Windows comes with its own solution called Disk Defragmenter, but this program is hardly ideal – it takes hours to defragment your computer. Fortunately, there is a solution in the form of Defraggler. Rather than attempt to defrag your entire hard drive (like Disk Defragmenter), Defragger lets you defrag individual files and folders, as well as the entire drive. This speeds the process up considerably. It also actively works to prevent defragmentation in the future, saving you time next time around. You can schedule Defraggler to work while you sleep if you think it'll take a long time, or you can use its Quick Defrag option to quickly spruce up your hard drive without going the whole hog. The interactive user interface is also very easy to use, and clearly displays how much needs to be defragged and what progress has been made so far. All you need to do is tell Defraggler what you want it to defrag, and then let it work its magic. NOTE: You should never defrag a solid state drive (SSD), as this can shorten its lifespan. It's also unnecessary – SSDs never get fragmented in the first place. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/mobile_phones/Nokia/Lumia1520/Review/lumia-1520-review-44-470-75.jpgWhile Microsoft has revealed much of what to expect from Windows 10, it's remained relatively tight-lipped about what to expect from Windows 10 for phones, however it looks like the company might be about to spill the beans. Microsoft has already announced a January 21 Windows 10 press event and according to The Verge sources familiar with Microsoft's plans have revealed that the company will show off some Windows 10 for phones features, including interface changes designed to make it fit more with both the desktop version of Windows and the Xbox One operating system. Apparently changes will also be made to the interface on the desktop version of Windows 10, with new light and dark themes designed to match those on the phone and tablet versions. Two become oneSupposedly Windows Phone 10 will essentially be a combination of Windows Phone and Windows RT, allowing the same apps to be run on both phones and tablets. Windows 10 for phones is internally being referred to as Windows 10 Mobile or just Windows Mobile, but it's possible that neither of them will be its final name and The Verge speculates that the release name of Windows 10 for phones may also be announced at the January 21 event. Perhaps more exciting, you may soon be able to try out Microsoft's next mobile OS for yourself, as a 'Phone Insider' app was recently released, allowing users to test the upcoming OS. Currently it's only available to Microsoft employees, but there's speculation that it could be opened up for anyone to use following the aforementioned press event. So a week from now we may have a far clearer picture of what form Windows 10 for phones will take, what it will be called and maybe even what it's like to use. A new version of iOS is in the works too.http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/42448e87/sc/15/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/218610567803/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/42448e87/sc/15/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/218610567803/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/42448e87/sc/15/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/218610567803/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/42448e87/sc/15/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/218610567803/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/42448e87/sc/15/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/218610567803/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/42448e87/sc/15/a2t.img

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/TRBC/windows_7_ultimate-470-75.jpgHard to believe that Windows 7 is five years already (it was launched in October 2009) and sure enough, it has now reached the end of its mainstream support which means that they will only stick to security patches from now on. Exchange Server 2010 (Enterprise and Standard editions) are also in the same boat. The operating system will reach the end of its extended support scheme in January 2020 although that is likely to go beyond that given the popularity of Windows 7 Pro. Windows 8 (and Windows 8.1) will reach the end of its mainstream support in January 2018 and its extended support will stop in January 2023. Windows 7 Professional is still very popular with businesses in general; the latest Netmarketshare report claims that more than half of all computers connected to the web run on it. Which explains that while Microsoft stopped selling Windows 7 in a retail box 15 months ago, it has yet to state when it will stop pre-installing the Pro version on new computers. Microsoft will reveal more details about its newest operating system, Windows 10, at an event next week. While we're at it, why not check our hands-on review of Windows 10.http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/4242c136/sc/4/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/218610550290/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4242c136/sc/4/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/218610550290/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4242c136/sc/4/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/218610550290/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4242c136/sc/4/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/218610550290/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4242c136/sc/4/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/218610550290/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4242c136/sc/4/a2t.img
