http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/mobile_phones/HTC/htc%20sense6%20android%20TechTastic-470-75.jpgHTC was one of the first companies to publically outline its Android Lollipop plans, claiming that it would bring the update to its flagships within 90 days of the final build's availability, which would mean early February. But it looks like the company might be ahead of schedule, as new reports claim that it will start updating both this year's HTC One M8 and last year's HTC One on January 3. According to TechTastic.nl, HTC confirmed as much at a closed London event as well as confirming that the update would bring a new look to its handsets and of course the update should bring the standard Lollipop improvements too, such as slicker performance and an improved notifications system. Seeing SenseBacking up its claims the site has also got hold of some images which purportedly show a test build of the new Sense interface on an HTC One M8. As it's a test build it may undergo some changes before launch, but visually it doesn't look vastly different from the current version of Sense. Hopefully this news does prove true, but bear in mind that even if the update does start on January 3 that doesn't necessarily mean you'll get it then, as it's likely to be a phased roll-out to different countries and networks. Check our guide to see when other handsets will get updated to Lollipop.http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/417d1bf5/sc/15/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/215951364590/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/417d1bf5/sc/15/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/215951364590/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/417d1bf5/sc/15/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/215951364590/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/417d1bf5/sc/15/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/215951364590/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/417d1bf5/sc/15/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/215951364590/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/417d1bf5/sc/15/a2t.img

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/Watches/Motorola/Moto%20360/moto-360-watch-faces-470-75.jpgThe Moto 360 may be the most popular Android Wear smartwatch so far, and today it was treated to its Android Lollipop update. Google announced in November that Android Wear devices would be getting a Lollipop update, and it began arriving in mid-December, bringing with it additional custom watch faces and new smartwatch features. At the same time Google has launched the Android Wear Watch Face API, letting developers have at it and design their own faces, so expect to see way more very soon. Besides that the Moto 360's Lollipop update tweaks the UI, adds new easy settings access and different modes for varying light environments, and brings new notification settings. Looking to the future we'll be keeping an eye out for the Moto 360 2, which could arrive as soon as early 2015. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/headphones/Bose/Freestyle/bose_headphones16082-470-75.jpgBose is already well known for music-listening hardware like speakers and headphones, so why not tackle the other side of it with a new music streaming service? That seems to be the thinking at the American company right now as it hires new staff to launch its own Bose streaming service, as pointed out by music business and technology site Hypebot. The project, a "next generation streaming music platform," is apparently moving "quickly." All this info comes from a Bose job listing seeking a "senior user experience designer of cloud music services." It also describes an "ecosystem of products" to go along with the music platform. Streaming competitionThere's nothing concrete beyond the listing, which also uses the word "prototyping," indicating the platform may still be early in development. As the site points out, though, Bose's competition will be steep, and Apple - which recently pulled Bose's products from its shelves, then dramatically started selling them again - probably won't be happy with any added competition for its Beats Music platform. Bose may target audiophile listeners who are currently being target by few other music services, but that, too, is unconfirmed. What's certain is that the streaming music arena is getting ever more crowded, and Bose will have a challenge ahead if it's really going through with this. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/av_accessories/Amazon%20Fire%20TV/Review/amazonfiretv-2-470-75.jpgHBO today continued its slow-moving efforts to put HBO Go on every platform available with its release on Amazon Fire TV. The Amazon set-top box joins the Xbox One, Google Chromecast and a whole bunch of other devices where users can access HBO's enormous catalog of TV shows and movies. In its announcement today, Amazon says the number of apps on Fire TV has quadrupled since the device's launch, but that HBO Go was their "most requested" addition.' The bookseller added that HBO Go will arrive on the Amazon Fire TV Stick in the Spring. And "to celebrate," Amazon explained, Fire TV is on sale for $79 - $20 below the normal price - until December 28. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/techradar/Boxing%20Day%20Sales/boxing_day_sales_january_sales-470-75.jpg Boxing Day SalesThe Black Friday bruises have barely begun to fade and Amazon's already bringing out the bunting for its Boxing Day Deals And in typical Amazon style, it's going for a whole week of Boxing Day deals instead of a single day. Yep, no longer confined to highstreet stores, this year's Boxing Day sales promise to be the most exciting ever, as online retailers slash prices across the board in an attempt to clear stock. So what should you be looking out for this Boxing Day? What deals can you expect to find? And how can you find them? You guessed it... TechRadar will be on hand once again to help you get the best deals on everything from games consoles, to phones, tablets, TVs and more! Here's everything you need to know about Boxing Day and January sales until the big day arrives... Where do retailers put their Boxing Day deals?Retail websites always have dedicated pages for things like this, and you can find some of them here: Amazon Boxing Day dealsVery Christmas dealsCurrys Christmas dealsPC World Christmas dealsTesco Christmas dealsJohn Lewis Christmas deals Zavvi Christmas deals GAME Christmas deals Carphone Warehouse Christmas dealsMore to come!http://cdn3.mos.techradar.futurecdn.net//art/magazines/MacFormat/Issue%20259/MAC259.show_feat.3rdstprom_hero-180-80.jpg Why Boxing Day and January sales became a big dealThe tradition of post-Christmas sales came about for a very simple reason: after Christmas, shops were stuffed with things that took up valuable space and that nobody wanted to buy. While setting fire to it and pretending that villains were responsible sounded tempting, retailers realised that insurers would see right through such tomfoolery. So they put away their matches and came up with the idea of sales instead - and it turned out that sales were brilliant. They really were. Sales helped shift unwanted stock to make room for spring/summer ranges. Sales got people to go shopping when they wouldn't normally bother. And sales often resulted in people coming in for the bargains and then paying for other, profitable, items and accessories. "It's like a post-Christmas Christmas!" retailers thought. "Let's do it every year!" So they did. http://cdn3.mos.techradar.futurecdn.net//art/events/Microsoft%20Xbox%20One%20Midnight%20Launch/New%20York/_DSC3004-180-80.jpg Why Boxing Day sales seem to start in September nowWe're exaggerating, but only a little bit. Faced with the question of how their sales could stand out when everybody else was doing it, retailers decided there was only one solution: start before everybody else. In 2013, some retailers kicked off their Boxing Day and January sales the week before Christmas. This year they might have already started. http://cdn3.mos.techradar.futurecdn.net//art/other/LG%20Seoul%20trip/P4172392-180-100.JPG Boxing Day and January sales: online versus the High StreetSome retailers start their sales early, but only online - so you can expect to see some websites unveil deals on Christmas Eve that you won't be able to get in-store for another few days. And of course, online-only retailers from gadget emporiums to Steam are keen to get a slice of that sweet sales-frenzy pie, so they'll be running their own offers too. http://cdn4.mos.techradar.futurecdn.net////art/events/wwdc/2013/color%20banner%20logo-180-80.jpg Should I queue overnight for Boxing Day sales? We wouldn't. So-called "doorbuster" deals tend to be very, very limited, and chances are you'll be way behind the organised eBay Tout Massive who know exactly what they want, what Buy It Now price they'll put on it and how to kill you with a single blow if it looks like you'll get to it before they do. We'd recommend staying in bed until a reasonable hour, having a nice breakfast and then relying on a trusted technology website - hello! - to tell you where the best deals are online. http://cdn3.mos.techradar.futurecdn.net//art/other/newyork_timessquare_cc_chensiyuan-180-80.jpg Have Boxing Day sales been overshadowed by Black Friday?Tesco certainly thinks so: it's reported that it expects its Black Friday sales to be higher than its Boxing Day ones, although given Tesco's recent track record in reporting important numbers - something that's seen heads roll and the financial cops called - then we should maybe take that with a pinch of salt. We're sure Boxing Day 2014 and the January sales 2015 will be just as frenzied as they've always been - maybe more so, given the current climate of austerity. http://cdn4.mos.techradar.futurecdn.net///art/mobile_phones/Samsung/Samsung_PIN_popup_store-180-80.jpg Can you really get a great bargain on Boxing Day or in the January Sales?Yes, sort of, maybe, if you know what you're doing and watch out for the tricks of the trade. And there are quite a few tricks to watch out for. The most common trick is what the Consumers' Association calls "pseudo-sales"; that is, sales that look like sales and quack like sales but that aren't really sales. They exist because of retailers sticking to the letter of the law rather than the spirit. Here's how it works. UK law says that retailers can claim to have discounted goods provided they've been at full price for 28 consecutive days in the last six months, so some firms simply double their prices to ridiculous levels for a month, drop them back to normal again and stick a SUPER HUGE MEGA DISCOUNT sticker on them. That, amazingly, is perfectly legal, and it's why every single Christmas tree in the world appears to be half price in December: they were twice the price throughout August, when nobody buys Christmas trees (if you did, you were robbed. Sorry. Why are you buying Christmas trees in summer anyway?). TechRadar will only be promoting genuine deals on the day so if you're unsure, check back with this page! http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/techradar/Boxing%20Day%20Sales/boxing_day_sales-180-100.jpg Boxing Day Sales: what's TechRadar doing? We'll be on hand on Boxing Day to unearth all of the best Boxing Day sales deals on the web, and we'll be listing them right here for you on this page. If you came to us on Black Friday, it's the same deal - we'll be regularly updating as more deals hit the web! We'll be continuing this throughout the January sales with deals of the day so if you stick with us it'll be almost impossible to not find a bargain or two!

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/mobile_phones/Windows%20Phone/Windows%20Phone%208/Cortana/Cortana-470-75.jpgA leaked Windows 10 build has given a glimpse of some of the consumer-focused features set to appear in Microsoft's upcoming OS. As Windows blogger Paul Thurrott notes, Windows 10 Build 9901 is shaping up to be a packed release. Cortana, Microsoft's Siri-like personal assistant, has been integrated into search, which is now available as a box embedded in the the Taskbar that lets you quickly search your PC and the web (through Bing) without having to click a button. Microsoft has made the Taskbar a darkened, almost opaque version of the colour you choose on the Personalise screen, which appears to intensify Windows 10's 'flattened' effect. Additionally, it now uses a line under app icons to indicate open windows, rather than a shaded box around the icon. Game onOther additions include a new Xbox app that replaces Xbox Games, a new full-screen button that's pinned to the title bar of Modern app windows, new Photos and Settings apps and five landscape-themed wallpapers. Microsoft has also introduced a Settings app that may go on to replace the Windows Control panel and PC Settings in the final release. The company released the enterprise-focused Windows 10 Technical Preview back in September that was geared toward keyboard and mouse users. It's due to hold an event on January 21 that will be used to show off the future of Windows, including the new OS's consumer-driven features in their entirety. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/logos/Nest-470-75.jpgAs soon as Google snapped up Nest we knew it wouldn't be long before we started seeing more integration between the two. The "Works with Nest" program, which launched in June this year, said we'd soon be able to use Google Now to alter our home climates, and it looks like we're very close indeed. As noticed by a user informing Droid Life, telling Google to "set Nest to x degrees" will mean it now tries to do so, however it currently fails due to requiring authorisation from your Google account. Google is yet to set this authorisation step live, but all of this suggests that it won't be long before we're commanding our climates with the power of our voice. Nest Learning Thermostat review

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/techradar/Boxing%20Day%20Sales/boxing_day_sales_january_sales-470-75.jpg Boxing Day SalesThe Black Friday bruises have barely begun to fade and Amazon's already bringing out the bunting for its Boxing Day Deals And in typical Amazon style, it's going for a whole week of Boxing Day deals instead of a single day. We'll be on hand on Boxing Day to unearth all of the best Boxing Day sales deals on the web, and we'll be listing them right here for you on this page. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/software/Google/materialdesign_googlemapsapp-470-75.jpgGoogle has given its Maps navigation app a little upgrade, with new heads-up notifications on what lane you need to get in to help ensure you don't miss that vital turn-off. Google Maps is a pretty good freebie sat nav already, but Google product manager Darren Baker has just let us know about this new feature in the service. Turn-by-turn navigation has been improved, with more sophisticated mapping data letting Maps tell you what lane you need to be in when turning off motorways and the like. Smarter sat navThis feature will be available in "Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the UK and Ireland," according to a post on the Google Europe blog. You'll be directed into the right lane with both a little visual cue and voice commands. Because, as any driver knows, there are few things as frustrating as missing your turn-off on a motorway. It seems likely this info may spread to some of Europe's smaller countries in time, but for now it's only for the real big hitters. This marks one of the few neat little features we've seen added since Google altered the Maps interface to fit in with the Android 5.0 Lollipop Material UI back in November. http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/4168a0fe/sc/21/mf.gif

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/DOWNLOADS/FTP/FileZilla/Dotd-011-FileZilla-470-75.jpgFileZilla is a feature-packed FTP client that does much more than just upload files. Why you need itFTP can seem a little confusing to the novice, but not with FileZilla. This easy to use program utilises a drag and drop interface, making the uploading of files simplicity itself. You can pause and resume the transfer of large files over 4GB, and if the transfer gets aborted, FileZilla still manages to retain a useable link using its Keep Alive feature. The tabbed interface allows you to manage multiple sites at once, while you can search for and edit files remotely. It's cross platform, too, so you can use it to upload files on your work PC and then manage them on your home Mac. And to help even more, the bookmarks, filename filters and synchronised directory browsing all serve to take the pain out of FTP. It's got plenty of technical compatibility as well. FileZilla supports FTP, FTP over SSL/TLS (FTPS) and SSH File Transfer Protocol (SFTP), plus IPv6, HTTP/1.1, SOCKS5 and FTP-Proxy. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/mobile_phones/iPhone/iPhone%205/HandsOn/iPhone5HandsOn-23-470-75.jpgGiven everything I have said in previous columns about bringing home technology to the workplace, there is a danger I'm about to contradict myself. Still, blame it on my family. In the Chadha household there's always things going on – last minute shopping, holidays to arrange, parents and grandparents to talk to. It's a bit like running a business and, like any successful organisation, communication is critical. For the kids, it's crucial they have 'own time' to talk to each other, or friends, without parental interference. But it's equally important the whole gang talks together so we all know what's going on. As a family, we're pretty tech-savvy and apps are a big deal for us. The downside is that every birthday I'm bombarded with best wishes via Facebook, Twitter, Google Hangouts, LinkedIn, SMS, email, phone calls and even a couple of cards through the letterbox (yes, people still send these). Whatsapp transformationBut one app in particular has transformed our family life – Whatsapp. We use it for everything from private conversations and family discussions (when one or more of us is away), to shopping lists and holiday planning. We also use the Apple Find Friends app, so we know where the kids are at any time. No, it's not spying – they can turn it off if they wish, but they appreciate the safety aspect without the "where are you?" phone calls. So how does this translate to the business world, given my previous gripes about CEOs expecting domestic apps to be appropriate for their organisations? Well, it's the principle of thinking creatively about the workforce and the way it communicates. There are still many companies that use intranets and extranets but, in a smartphone world, their roles are being restricted, accelerated by the cloud and the need for collaborative tools. Often intranet content is out of date or just plain dull and rarely interactive. I'm not suggesting Whatsapp as a business tool, but the principle is about making company communications engaging, exciting and relevant to the way people choose to work. Don't rush into thingsThere are a myriad of tools available, but before rushing out to download the latest plug-and-play app and making it compulsory across the business, find out what's already being used. There may be a couple of perfectly good candidates for company-wide adoption if they're appropriate, people like them and use them regularly. Questions to consider are: can they handle rich media, projects and workflow and is the info automatically captured – for example Google Docs' instant save facility. While some apps will emphasise real-time chat, and others workflow or project management, most of the big tools – such as Yammer, Huddle, Zoho, Podio and Google+ For Enterprise – have a bit of everything. The important thing is that all of these systems are real-time. In the same way as locating my children, organisations also are using mapping apps to monitor their grown-up field-based workforce, particularly for safety in conflict zones. But, as with my kids, it's essential that staff retain the right to switch off the app and that the expectation of 'always-on' is carefully managed. App tangleI recently worked with a rapidly growing client, with operations in Europe, Asia and the Middle East, which used 21 different systems including Skype and Yahoo, not to mention two separate email systems. Many of these were being used for the same tasks and often in parallel by the same department. The trick is to develop a strategy that examines all elements of functionality and sets these alongside business communication needs. Once a single, or small group of apps is identified, planning should focus on ensuring central control of groups, message boards and collaborative tools, but should also allow freedom for local communication – the corporate equivalent of 'own time'. For many larger organisations this model is becoming de facto. For example, in the US, LA Fitness uses Microsoft Lync, shopping centre giant Westfield cites Yammer, and O2 has bought into the Chatter plugin for CRM system Salesforce. To consolidate the 21 systems of our growing client, the DrPete team used a combination of the Zoho suite and Sharepoint (for the more static data). Careful planningWhatever app strategy is decided upon, it has to be carefully planned and integrated, requiring buy-in across the business. By making them indispensable, there is less likelihood of individuals running 'shadow' systems because they don't like the suggested app. Without entering this brave new world, commercial and communication failure is definitely an option and a dysfunctional business 'family' is highly likely. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/laptops/Synaptics/securepad-cropped-470-75.jpgThe FIDO Alliance has launched a new standard that will soon let you log into a laptop and pay for goods and services using a finger. Called Fido 1.0, it has been designed to boost online and device security while putting an end to remembering lengthy password combinations. US-based Synaptics has unveiled one of the first solutions based on the standard called SecurePad, a 4mm by 10mm fingerprint scanner that can be embedded into laptop touchpads. The company reckons it'll work with any FIDO-supported online service, meaning that in addition to logging into a machine, it could also be used for anything from paying for goods to visiting websites or streaming media. The alliance has the backing of payments companies including PayPal, Mastercard and Visa, in addition to device makers Microsoft, Lenovo and BlackBerry. Crossing overBusiness laptops such as the Fujitsu Lifebook U904 and Lenovo T440s already come with fingerprint scanners built in. By integrating it into the touchpad, Synaptics reckons that notebook makers can offer the secure authentication method at a cheaper cost as it removes the need to duplicate hardware components. Consumer interest around fingerprint ID technology is on the rise following the launch of Apple's TouchID and Apple Pay solutions, which allow apps and services to be bought by pressing a digit on the home buttons of its recent iPhone and iPad devices. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/people/IBM%20and%20Apple%20CEO-470-75.jpgApple and IBM have lifted the lid on the first wave of business apps co-developed by the two companies. The tech giants set tongues wagging back in July by announcing plans to combine the iPhone maker's hardware with IBM's software and services experitse. Why Apple is using IBM IBM as a Trojan Horse to crack the enterprise marketThe new IBM MobileFirst for iOS apps have been tailored for iPad and iPhone users and are available to enterprise customers in a number of industries - from banking and retail to insurance, financial services and telecommunications - in addition to governments and airlines. There are 10 apps in the new portfolio covering a range of industries - from travel to finance and retail. According to Apple, they can be easily deployed, managed and upgraded via the cloud and data is secured at the back end and on the device. Clients using the two apps include Citi Air Canada, Sprint and Barnote. Ready for actionAmong the new apps detailed are: Plan Flight (Travel and Transportation) addresses the major expense of all airlines—fuel—permitting pilots to view flight schedules, flight plans, and crew manifests ahead of time, report issues in-flight to ground crews, and make more informed decisions about discretionary fuel.Advise & Grow (Banking and Financial Markets) puts bankers on premise with their small business clients, with secure authorization to access client profiles and competitive analyses, gather analytics-driven insights to make personalized recommendations, and complete secure transactions.Trusted Advice (Banking and Financial Markets) allows advisors to access and manage client portfolios, gain insight from powerful predictive analytics—in the client's kitchen or at the local coffee shop, rather than the advisor's office—with full ability to test recommendations with sophisticated modeling tools all the way to complete, secure transactions.Sales Assist (Retail) enables associates to connect with customer profiles, make suggestions based on previous purchases and current selections, check inventory, locate items in-store, and ship out-of-store items.Expert Tech (Telecommunications) taps into native iOS capabilities including FaceTime® for easy access to expertise and location services for route optimization to deliver superior on-site service, more effective issue resolution and productivity as well as improved customer satisfaction. In November, Apple and IBM announced plans to offer a new support service as part of the enterprise app development partnership. Called AppleCare for Enterprise, the service offers 24/7 IT support for all Apple hardware and operating systems. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/TRBC/Apps/Peak%20App%20Feature/peak-app-1-470-75.jpgIntroduction and paid appsThe smartphone app has been a phenomenon like no other in the digital economy, but are its days of runaway growth finally on the wane? One hundred billion apps had been downloaded by July 2013 and by now there are well over two million apps available – big numbers indeed – but barely 10% of smartphone users in the UK actually pay to download apps. That's according to research from Deloitte earlier this year, which also revealed that almost a third of UK-based smartphone users no longer download new apps in a typical month – a figure that's up from 20% in 2013. Deloitte's report, entitled 'The rise of App-athy', also revealed that 14% of smartphone users have never downloaded an app. The concept of an app might not be dead, but are app developers now operating in a market that's past its peak? http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/TRBC/Apps/Peak%20App%20Feature/peak-app-2-420-90.jpg How we use apps is changingThe number of apps we download continues to fall. This is partly to do with demographics – people now getting their first smartphone tend to be older, with 31% of over 55s never downloading apps. Meanwhile, those of us who've had smartphones for years generally have the apps we need, and are happy to use mobile websites for occasionally-used services. However, there are new apps appearing all the time for completing tasks that previously weren't possible. Checking bank balances with a smartphone has seen a sharp increase in usage according to Deloitte – 40% of respondents did this in 2014, 10% more than in 2013. "Like our underwear we're going to rotate our apps," says Marcos Sanchez, VP of Global Corporate Communications at app analytics firm App Annie, which tracks the performance of 4.2 million apps for clients including Facebook, Yahoo and Google. "Apps can only do so much, but that doesn't limit the apps market – there are plenty of ways that app developers will continue to innovate." http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/TRBC/Apps/Peak%20App%20Feature/peak-app-3-420-90.jpg Are paid apps dead? The demand for paid apps in the UK is even lower than for free apps, with a miserly 5% of smartphone users spending more than £5 per month on apps and games. While once it dominated, the concept of paying money to download an app to a smartphone or tablet is now a niche market, at best. The freemium model is the dominant business model by a long way, and it's not going away anytime soon. "Paid apps are a small margin of the money being made, so it's not that important to think about them," observes Sanchez. There are four types of apps: paid, free, paid-ium (you pay for the app and have paid-for upgrades within the app) and freemium (free app, paid-for upgrades). The huge majority of apps are games, almost all of which follow the freemium model – together they account for well over 90% of revenue in the Google Play store, with similar dominance in Apple's App Store. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/TRBC/Apps/Peak%20App%20Feature/peak-app-4-420-90.jpg Can non-games apps ever be a real business again?Despite the dominance of games apps, Sanchez thinks that paid-for, non-games apps will mature and stage a comeback. It's largely about the step-up in smartphone hardware. "I now use now my smartphone to make modifications to documents, largely because it has a bigger, HD quality screen and the processor is faster, and the network plans are faster and cheaper," he says. "You can now do a lot more interesting things with non-games apps, and I suspect over time that non-games apps will start to monetise." At the high-end, better cameras, microphones and high-resolution screens mean new apps are possible, but by far the more lucrative end of the market is in emerging economies, and new smartphone users. Emerging markets and wearablesHow important are cheap phones in emerging economies? Both are crucial to the apps market's future growth. Google's $100 (around £64, AU$120) Android One smartphone has a cheaper screen, a slower processor and a poorer build quality than the kind of smartphones popular in Europe and the US. However, at that price – and likely subsidised to zero in some markets – it's going to change the app market completely simply by massively expanding the potential customer base. "Smartphones are going to grow in a way that laptops were never able to, and tablets, too, because they're a lot more expensive," says Sanchez, who thinks that there is still a lot of growth to happen in places like Brazil, Turkey and India that are beginning to see a rise in smartphone usage. "Smartphones have advanced enough for them to become the computers of the world – there are millions of people who would never have been able to afford a laptop or a desktop computer who can now have a smartphone," he adds. "The apps market is nowhere near its peak." http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/TRBC/Apps/Peak%20App%20Feature/peak-app-5-420-90.jpg What kinds of apps will be aimed at emerging economies? We may live in a global market, but app developers can't just take an existing app and throw it at a billion new customers. "It's about cultural adaptation, which can take the form of changing a storyline within an app or a game or changing the types of images or the dollar amounts for in-app purchases," says Sanchez, who believes that new ways of in-app advertising will dominate. "In-app advertising is going to be a more important way of monetising because whereas in a place like Japan people might drop a hundred dollars a month on apps, that's not going to happen in India, but India has a huge economy and many companies want to get in front of those eyeballs via a smartphone." Will iBeacon bring new kinds of apps?A good example of how new hardware and software can cause a spike in new app development is Apple's iBeacon technology, which should produce apps with a wider role in terms of increasing revenue for high street businesses. "I walk by Starbucks every day at 8am, there's a beacon on the storefront and it sees my phone, and it notices that on Thursdays I don't buy anything at Starbucks," says Sanchez. "So maybe it throws up an offer that says 'Visit Starbucks and we'll give you 30% off a latte'." He adds that this kind of in-app monetisation could get really complicated depending on how much geo-location and demographic information is used. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/TRBC/Apps/Peak%20App%20Feature/peak-app-6-420-90.jpg Will wearables drive new growth? As well as smarter smartphones giving apps a fillip, there are new devices coming, most notably wearables and smartwatches. "I suspect that the likes of Fitbit are what will probably usher smartwatches into the mainstream," says Sanchez. "When people are comfortable with a wearable on their person, that will be extended into smartwatches, which have a lot more diverse functions." For example, it's possible to get navigation directions via new smartwatches like the Moto 360 watch, with drivers getting a haptic buzz when it's time to turn a corner, and where a map is only a glance at a wrist away. Wireless music in the home, too, is increasingly controlled by apps on a smartphone, which in turn gives a nearby smartwatch another cool function. Could the rise of wearables and the birth of the Internet of Things (IoT) mean app usage growing over the next decade? "The IoT is closer than people think," says Sanchez. "Conceptually, the smartphone is becoming a 'remote control for your life' as Google and Apple both make it central whether you're playing a game, listening to music, or driving." Gartner forecasts that 26 billion connected devices will be installed globally by 2020; each one of them is going to need an app or three. The way we consume apps might be changing, but with new connected devices and a billion new users incoming, the app concept isn't going to go away anytime soon. http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/4154b40f/sc/28/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/214612625145/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4154b40f/sc/28/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/214612625145/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4154b40f/sc/28/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/214612625145/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4154b40f/sc/28/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/214612625145/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4154b40f/sc/28/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/214612625145/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4154b40f/sc/28/a2t.img

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/TRBC/Apps/App%20Builders/rise-of-app-builders-1-hero-470-75.jpgIntroductionApps are increasingly important for all organisations, but until recently small to medium-sized businesses and charities have had a hard time keeping up. Step forward a raft of new mobile app creation platforms that allow businesses to create their own apps quickly and easily. Is this the way forward? Does your company need an app?For mobile-first companies like Citymapper or Uber – both startups at one point – the app is critical, but that's not the case for all businesses. "SMEs should consider if they actually need to create an app or whether they would be better off getting listed on well-established applications that cater for their industry," says John Davis, MD of London-based cloud solutions company BCSG, citing the popular Just Eat app, a clearing house for owners of takeaway restaurants. Apps can keep customers focused so they spend more. "One of the largest hurdles businesses face is the ability to stay connected to their customer because so many other marketing channels have become bombarded," says Ian Blair, CEO of California-based app builder platform BuildFire. "Mobile apps give businesses a unique way to communicate with their audience, and features such as mobile shopping, Selective Push Notifications, rich multimedia and interactive groups engage users to keep them coming back for more." One of BuildFire's customers has created an app focused on giving people information about the Ebola crisis. "Apps have a specific use case and are really only relevant to organisations with a strong brand-loyal customer base," says Jim Rudall, Sales Director at London-based mobile commerce specialist MoPowered. "Before deciding on whether to invest in an app an organisation must always look to its data to understand whether there is a use case and a return on the investment." If your business has repeat customers and an app could be central to sales or encouraging more loyalty, an app could be just what it needs. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/TRBC/Apps/App%20Builders/rise-of-app-builders-2-420-90.jpg How should SMEs create an app?Once a company has decided that it needs an app there are myriad options. Traditionally it's been down to agencies and freelancers to create bespoke apps for all kinds of budgets, but now app builders like BuildFire, Mobile Roadie, Bizness Apps and AppInstitute are trying to make it a DIY process. "These platforms make it possible for anyone to create and deploy an app with no technical skills," says Davis, though he adds that the choice between DIY and contracting out app development depends on the level of functionality you need. "There are some things that App Builders won't be able to do." http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/TRBC/Apps/App%20Builders/rise-of-app-builders-3-420-90.jpg App developers are obviously sceptical of the claims of app creation platforms. "I have yet to encounter a generic platform that can, without human ingenuity, create a truly unique service," says Kevin McDonagh at Android software developer Novoda. "Creating something truly unique requires innovation, passion and talent." McDonagh thinks that app creation is all about the aims of the company and the combined level of experience of its developers. In short, you get what you pay for. App creationHow easy is it to create an app? The race is on to create a widely recognised 'WordPress for mobile apps'. "Anyone who is familiar with using the web should be able to start building an app in a matter of minutes," says Blair at BuildFire. "We have a bunch of easy-to-follow tutorials that hold the users' hands throughout the entire building process … many other app building platforms are too complex for users to just pick up and get started on building an app." Such platforms are aimed at all kinds of companies, from restaurants wanting to create a unique takeaway app to businesses looking to reward customers every time they buy an item via their phone. All kinds of features are included in these platforms, such as Facebook and Twitter integration, geo-location map listings, custom form builders, image galleries, and video directories. "With little or no prior technical knowledge users can create apps for both Apple and Android devices," says Nabeena Mali at cloud-based app creation platform AppInstitute. "The drag and drop interface on AppInstitute means that no prior technical knowledge is required and users can either tailor one of the readymade templates or choose from up to 20 customisable modules to create their app from scratch." Don't presume that your company's tech department can handle the creation of an app; even website developers struggle with apps. "Many desktop web development shops still feel they lack the expertise and resources to develop enhanced native apps," thinks Rudall, "and therefore will often refer to a third party with specific app experience." http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/TRBC/Apps/App%20Builders/rise-of-app-builders-4-420-90.jpg How much should it cost?Native-built apps can be an expensive way to produce and maintain your service. Some incidental costs are fixed – Apple charges £30 per submission of an app to its AppStore while the Android self-publish option on the Google Play Store is free. However, actually creating the app costs as much as you want to pay. "By using an app building platform you can have an app live in the App Store or Google Play market in less than two weeks for a small monthly fee," says Blair. "If someone wanted to have their app custom developed it would cost around US$10,000 [around £6,400, or AU$12,000] for a rather basic app. Even at that, a business wouldn't be able to update their app on the fly like they could with an app building platform." As an example, the AppInstitute platform has a basic Self-Build plan for free, a Premium Build Service with a setup cost of £497 (around $780, AU$940), and a Premium Plan that, for £25 per month, gives customers perks like full customisation of business app modules, consultation with an app specialist, full technical support, and Apple AppStore and Google Play Store submissions. "A lot of App Builders have free trials available with prices then starting at approximately £20 per month," says Davis. "Getting an agency or freelancer to develop a bespoke solution will depend on the complexity, but will tend to start at £1,000 (around $1,560, AU$1,880) for the most basic and go upwards from there." Paul Swaddle, CEO of app developer Pocket App, goes even further, stating that: "The creation of a bespoke app can cost you anything from £5,000 (around $7,800, AU$9,400) upwards, but a more comprehensive app is more likely to be £20,000 (around $31,300, AU$37,700) and up." Pocket App's most recent app is My Poppy. Long-term prospectsWhat about running costs? It is of equal importance to possess the budget to maintain the app as it is to build it. "It's important to realise that just like all areas of a business strategy, after its initial creation ongoing development and support is required," says McDonagh. "Many apps fall down in the period after their initial success, during which a failure to improve over time by adding new features and eliminating bugs ultimately leads to wasted time and money," says Adam Croxen, MD of London-based digital innovation agency, Future Platforms. "With iOS, Android and Windows, plus a range of device sizes, SMEs need to also establish their platform strategy. Many build a name on iOS before branching out." What's better: an app or a mobile website? There is, of course, a third option – forget trying to create an app and instead go for an HTML5 mobile website using a platform like Squarespace, which is very popular with SMEs. It can be a cheaper option that's just as effective as an app. "Mobile websites are often cheaper to maintain and will support a greater number of devices, but they are unable to take advantage of the native features of the device," says Davis. "It can also be very valuable to have your app icon on your customer's phone to ensure that your brand remains front of mind." Research appears to back up the claim that people prefer to use mobile apps far more than mobile websites. "The power of a native app is so much greater than a mobile website," says Blair. "The most powerful feature that native apps have over mobile websites is the ability to message your customers directly with Push Notifications, which have some of the highest engagement rates around." There's also the smaller matter of getting online. "A mobile website can be highly flexible, but does not have the same phone presence as an app, and requires an internet connection to work," says Swaddle. "Apps get better access to phone features such as accelerometers, GPS and cameras – mobile websites can access these too, but typically in a more limited way. I think a key consideration here is your audience – what are they going to be using the mobile product for, and how and where are they going to be accessing?" How long will apps remain relevant?"Smartphones and the mobile way of life are forecast to see increasing levels of growth for a good time to come," says Davis, "so now could be as good a time as any to get your business listed in the app stores." Swaddle uses the analogy of radio; it's hardly a 'now' technology but no-one should ever underestimate its popularity and power. "Apps will be relevant for some time," he says. "The only certainty of mobile is change – apps will be an important part of an organisation's overall strategic toolkit for many years. Mobility is already a big part of corporate and everyday consumer life, and this will continue." "Apps will not be going away any time soon, and over the course of the next few years will evolve into more immersive experiences," says Jay Karsandas, Digital Manager at Mobiles.co.uk, who thinks apps allow engagement between company and consumer without the 'background noise' on a web browser. "Users make a clear choice in downloading an app, and SMEs and non-profit organisations can create experiences based solely on their message and brand, which is a wonderful opportunity to embrace." http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/413c4d66/sc/4/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/214612516145/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/413c4d66/sc/4/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/214612516145/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/413c4d66/sc/4/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/214612516145/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/413c4d66/sc/4/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/214612516145/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/413c4d66/sc/4/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/214612516145/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/413c4d66/sc/4/a2t.img
