Cisco has joined Apple, Microsoft and other tech giants in calling for a US version of the EU's General Data Protection (GDPR) regulation as online privacy remains a huge issue worldwide. The company told the Financial Times that it wants US politicians to devise and implement their own version of the European regulation in the coming months despite criticism that the legislation is too harsh on businesses and overly broad. Cisco's chief legal officer, Mark Chandler explained to the FT that GDPR has been successful in Europe and now is the time for the US to adopt a similar policy, saying: Satya Nadella calls for global GDPRMajority of companies still aren't GDPR compliantSix months on from GDPR“We believe that the GDPR has worked well, and that with a few differences, that is what should be brought in in the US as well.” US data protectionWhile some US tech giants are calling for the country to adopt a similar policy to GDPR, there would be some aspects such as the right of individuals to remove their information from search engines that Chandler hopes would be left out. The large penalties for data breaches under GDPR is another problematic aspect of the regulation that will likely be left out when US politicians enact the country's first national data privacy law. An industry lobbyist provided further insight on the current state of a US data privacy law to the FT, saying: “The business-to-business companies are willing to see much tougher regulation than the consumer-facing ones. Some internet companies want more data collection, others want less. And Apple is trying not to be placed alongside the rest of the industry at all.” The desire for a US version of GDPR is certainly there and hopefully politicians are taking Cisco, Apple and Microsoft's vote of confidence in such a regulation seriously. Intel’s new F-series processors were already plenty interesting for dropping integrated graphics without being any cheaper, and now we may have learned they won’t feature nearly as robust cooling either. It appears that momomo_US has got its hands on an Intel Core i5-9400F, removed its lid and revealed the processor will utilize a grease-based thermal interface material (TIM). If this leak is authentic, it would be a step backwards for the company's products. Intel's Coffee Lake Refresh reintroduced the superior soldered TIM to the delight of overclockers and PC enthusiasts. Beyond the dismay of hardcore fans, we've seen soldered TIMs reduce peak temperatures by 10 degrees Celsius, going from the Intel Core i7-8700K to and Core i9-9900K. This is especially impressive considering that the latter Coffee Lake Refresh processor featured two more cores than its closest predecessor. Going back to thermal grease to transfer heat between the processor dies and the integrated heatsink – in other words, the top cover of the CPU – would likely lead to higher temperatures once again. Want more soldered processors? AMD Ryzen 2nd Generation CPUs are a sure betWe're also excited about Intel graphics cards potentially being on their wayHere's everything you need to know about Intel's latest HEDT familyIt remains to be seen whether all the F-series Intel processors will come with a thermal grease-based TIM – especially those with K-series, soldered counterparts. We certainly hope not, as this development would only add to the absurdity of processors that have no integrated graphics without any reduction in price. We’ve asked Intel for a comment on this story and will update this should we receive a statement. Looking for the best processors? Welcome to our guide of the best laptops of 2019. If you're hunting for the best laptop money can buy to kick off 2019, then you've come to the right place. We're only just into February and we've already got two amazing new entries at the top of this best laptops list. First, we've got the brilliant new Huawei MateBook 13, which takes the top spot from last year's (still very good) Huawei MateBook Pro X. The MateBook 13 is currently only available in the US, but we're chasing up with Huawei to find out when it comes to the rest of the world. Until then, we've got alternatives for our UK and Australian readers. Dell has also released an updated XPS 13, and once again it's a wonderful Ultrabook that fully deserves its place near the top of our best laptops list. The MateBook 13 just pips it to the top spot thanks to an absolutely amazing price. Of course, we've also got the best laptops that were released last year as well, as these machines are still formidable notebooks that are worth considering. No matter what kind of laptop you're looking for, our best laptop guide lists a wide range of excellent laptops, from super-slim and all-powerful Ultrabooks, to high-end laptops, Apple MacBooks, gaming laptops and budget laptops as well. We've also included our own price comparison tool that will check the most popular online retailers on the internet and highlight the best prices for the best laptops. Every entry in this best laptops buying guide has been thoroughly tested by us, and we only include laptops that have seriously impressed us and convinced us they are worthy of a place in this list. The best laptops of 2019:Huawei has done it again, and its latest laptop has topped our best laptops list for 2019. As with last year's Huawei MateBook X Pro, the MateBook 13 comes with some of the latest components, including a discrete Nvidia MX150 graphics card, and a gorgeous lightweight design, that you'd expect to find on a much more expensive laptop. The fact that the MateBook 13 offer so much, yet comes with an impressively low price – compared to its Ultrabook competitors, like the XPS 13 below – makes it our choice for the best laptop money can buy right now. Sure, you may be missing a few minor niceties here and there to achieve such a competitive price, but on the whole, this is the most value-packed flagship laptop that we’ve ever tested. If you're after a few more bells and whistles, like super-fast Thunderbolt 3 ports and a 4K display, then the Dell XPS 13 or MacBook Pro (also on this list of best laptops) may be better choices, but for sheer bang for your bucks, the MateBook 13 is the laptop to beat in 2019. Read the full review: Huawei MateBook 13 This product is only available in the US at the time of writing. For UK readers, check out last year's still brilliant MateBook Pro X. Australian readers: check out a fine alternative in the Dell XPS 13 The Dell XPS 13 has been a regular of our best laptops list for years, and the 2019 model is no exception. It retains everything we've come to love from Dell's flagship 13-incher, from the gorgeous and light design, to the powerful modern components that power it. The Dell XPS 13 rocks an 8th-generation Intel Core i5 or i7 processor and a bezel-less ‘Infinity Edge’ display, this Dell XPS 13 continues to be the most popular Windows laptop in the world. What’s more, there’s a wide range of customization options, so you can really make the Dell XPS 13 the best laptop for your needs. The 2019 model doesn't bring a huge amount of improvements, but then not that much about the Dell XPS 13 needs improving. Its webcam has been placed at the top center of the screen, rather than at the bottom, which a lot of customers have been asking for. You also get a longer battery life in this year's model. Read the full review: Dell XPS 13 Asus has struck gold with its new refresh of its ZenBook Flip S 2-in-1 laptop, with the Asus ZenBook Flip S UX370 impressing us so much it's landed straight at number 3 in our best laptops list. With a new Kaby Lake R 8th-generation processor powering the device, plenty of RAM and a super-fast PCIe SSD in certain models, this is an absolutely stunning laptop. Its 2-in-1 design means you can use it as both a laptop and a tablet, and while it's not as affordable as some machines on this list, if you have the budget you'll be really happy with this fantastic device. Read the full review: Asus ZenBook Flip S UX370 If you're after the latest and greatest laptop from Apple, we suggest you look into the 2018 model of the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar. While Microsoft had the performance edge over last year's MacBook Pro, with the Surface Book 2, Apple has come out swinging with some seriously beefed up specs for the 13-inch MacBook Pro 2018, and even more so if you go for the larger 15-inch model. The headline Touch Bar – a thin OLED display at the top of the keyboard which can be used for any number of things, whether that be auto-suggesting words as you type or offering Touch ID so you can log in with just your fingerprint – is again included. It's certainly retained Apple's sense of style, but it comes at a cost. This is a pricey machine, so you may want to consider one of the Windows alternatives. If you're open to switching to a PC, definitely consider the XPS 13 or the excellent MateBook X Pro. But, if you're a steadfast Apple diehard, this is definitely the best laptop for you! Read the full review: Apple Macbook with Touch Bar 13-inch (2018) The new MSI GS65 Stealth has knocked our previous choice of the best gaming laptop, Asus ROG Zephyrus GX501, off this list, thanks to its excellent array of cutting edge components, which includes an 8th-generation Intel Core i7-8750H CPU and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 GPU. It's also more reasonably priced than the Zephyrus GX501, and its subtle design means that it can double as a work or study laptop without raising any eyebrows. If you're looking for a more affordable gaming laptop, however, check out the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming below. Read the full review: MSI GS65 Stealth Microsoft's second attempt at a pure laptop device is an absolute winner in our view, and while it doesn't represent a huge overhaul of the original Surface Laptop, it offers improvements in all the areas we were hoping for, including updated hardware that brings serious performance benefits. This is a laptop that finally delivers on what Microsoft set out to do with the original: a pure, powerful Windows 10 laptop experience. If you're not sold on the 2-in-1 nature of the Surface Book 2 (which is also on this best laptops list), but love Microsoft's premium build quality and design, then the Surface Laptop 2 is the laptop for you. A very worth addition to this list. Read the full review: Microsoft Surface Laptop 2 Last year’s Dell XPS 15 was already one of the best laptops you could buy, but now that Dell has taken the beautiful redesign of the Dell XPS 13 and applied it here – while also making it a convertible. Well, it’s amazing. Not only do you get one of the most aesthetically pleasing 15-inch laptops on the market, but it also packs one of those new Intel Kaby Lake G-series CPUs featuring ‘discrete-class’ Radeon graphics. This means that this laptop packs serious power – even if it can get a little loud. Read the full review: Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 The Acer Predator Helios 300 is a fantastic affordable gaming laptop that proves that even if you don't have the kind of money to buy the MSI GS65 Stealth that also features on this best laptops list, you don't have to sacrifice too much when it comes to power. The Acer Predator Helios 300 packs some excellent components, such as a new 8th generation 6-core Intel Core i7 processor, Nvidia GTX 1060 graphics card and 16GB of RAM. While it's still an expensive proposition compared to regular laptops, for a gaming notebook you are getting a heck of a lot of power for the price. Read the full review: Acer Predator Helios 300 When it comes to the best Chromebook laptop, you have a choice between two stark alternatives. There's the premium Chromebook Pixel, which we list further down this page, and then there's the excellent Asus Chromebook Flip C302, which combines premium features in a much more affordable package. For many people, Chromebooks are excellent and affordable laptops that are perfect for students, and the Asus Chromebook Flip C302 is easily one of the best Chromebooks, and one of the best laptops, money can buy. It comes with an Intel Core processor, full 1080p display, touchscreen, backlit keyboard and USB-C port. Read the full review: Asus Chromebook Flip When HP unveiled the HP Spectre Folio, it made some big claims about how the 2-in-1 laptop would reinvent the PC. While it doesn't quite match the hype, what we do have is one of the most beautifully-designed laptops we've ever tried. Billed as "modern vintage meets technology", the HP Spectre Folio is built directly into a piece of genuine leather. That's not a fancy cover, it's a part of the laptop. It's not just looks that has put it on this list of the best laptops of 2019, the HP Spectre Folio is also a brilliant performer as well, with modern components powering the device. It is very expensive, though, so if you're on a budget, check out the more affordable 2-in-1 Acer Switch 3 below. But, if you want the best laptop for making a statement as soon as you pull it out of the bag, then the HP Spectre Folio is the one to get. Read the full review: HP Spectre Folio If you want the Microsoft Surface Book 2 but you want to spend a lot less, the Acer Switch 3 2017 is definitely the your best option. It's designed around essentially the same concept as the Surface Book 2 and it's a less capable thanks to slightly lower power innards, but for most tasks it's a brilliant little machine. What's more, to add further value this 2-in-1 laptop/tablet comes with the keyboard upgrade which means no little extras to pay for. As usual it comes in several different versions, with USB Type-C, 8GB RAM, an IPS display and Intel Core i3 7100U CPU coming with the more expensive option. Read the full review: Acer Switch 3 Last year's iteration of the MacBook is another win for Apple, and it's once again won us over with a gorgeous design, excellent performance and best-in-class battery life. Apple has updated the processors with Intel's 7th-generation Kaby Lake range, which means you get improved performance and longer battery life without sacrificing the thin and light design that the MacBook is famous for. While the MacBook 2017 is not designed as a pure productivity machine, like the more powerful and versatile MacBook Pro above, or as a gaming machine like the Asus ROG Zephyrus GX501, it's still one of the best laptops in the world right now thanks to being a super slim and light MacBook that you can take anywhere without even noticing the weight, and being a powerful showcase for macOS High Sierra. If you're after a MacBook, this year's model is easily one of the best. Read the full review: Apple MacBook The best Chromebooks have experienced huge success in recent years as a result of their accessibility, and the Google Pixelbook is no exception. Even though it costs twice as much as the average Chrome OS device and doesn’t come with a stylus as you may expect, the Pixelbook is built to withstand the future. It features a pair of Thunderbolt 3 ports for accessories and super fast file transfers, a hinge that flips inside out for watching movies on planes and a taste of Android. You get full access to the Google Play store on the Pixelbook, from playing Sonic the Hedgehog to watching videos in VLC. The icing on this pixelated cake is its long battery life – it lasted nearly 8 hours in our own testing, so you shouldn’t need to worry about the Pixelbook dying on you. Read the full review: Google Pixelbook This product is only available in the US and UK at the time of this writing. Australian readers: check out a fine alternative in the Asus Chromebook Flip C302 While you may have been convinced that ‘budget Ultrabook’ was an oxymoron up until this point, the Acer has turned this common misconception on its head with the Swift 3. That’s because the company has taken the all-aluminum chassis of the Acer Swift 7 and stuffed some more affordable components inside for everyone to enjoy. It doesn’t run macOS, but the Acer Swift 3 does put the age-old MacBook Air to shame in about every other regard, including the nigh-unbeatable price tag. Of course, in the process of demolishing the competition, Acer did have to cut a few corners in order to keep the price so impressively low. So although you can’t expect much in the way of an Ultra HD display or quality onboard sound, the performance benchmarks alone give even the Surface Laptop a run for its money. We've also had a glance of the upcoming 2018 edition of the Swift 7 at CES 2018, which comes with boosted graphics and processing specs. It could be a shoe-in for a place on this list when it launches later this year. Read the full review: Acer Swift 3 While it may not have the best keyboard in the world, the Samsung Notebook 9 was one of the best laptops you could buy in 2018. and that stands in 2019. Packed with more horsepower than the MacBook Pro, but at a much lower price, Samsung has crafted a laptop that has just as much substance as it does style. Plus, on top of its killer specs, it’s lightweight and thin, making this one of the most portable 15-inch laptops you can buy today. Read the full review: Samsung Notebook 9 This product is only available in the US and UK at the time of this writing. Australian readers: check out a fine alternative in the MacBook Pro Which type of laptop is best for you?General laptops: Where the best cheap laptops are found, devices that focus more on practicality than style, portability or power. That’s not to say they can’t be fast, but you’ll typically find a non-Ultrabook clamshell laptop with an HD screen and spinning drive-based storage for less than $600 or £400. Ultrabooks: Where you’ll find thin-and-light notebooks sporting SSD storage and display resolutions that exceed 1080p. Paired with powerful, albeit mobile-centric components and especially long battery life, the best Ultrabooks will cost a pretty penny – $700 or £500 to $2,000 or £1,800. 2-in-1 laptops: Where notebooks that double as tablets are located. The Surface Book 2 might be a ways off, but many of the best 2-in-1 laptops are available right now. Outfitted with both detachable and 360-degree rotating hinges, these hybrids are the most versatile way to experience Windows 10 (or Chrome OS) on a touchscreen. Chromebooks: Where you’ll find the best Chromebooks running Chrome OS. These do much of what Windows and macOS can in the browser, focused on cloud storage over local, while recently getting Android app support for touchscreen models. They generally cost less than $300 or £200 and some can even withstand a slight tussle. Gaming laptops: Need a laptop to play games (almost) just like a shiny desktop PC can? Then you’ll want one of the best gaming laptops. These machines generally cost from $800 or £600 to upwards of $3,000 or £2,800 and they’ll likely be the ones to take advantage of AMD’s laptop-grade Ryzen processors first. Laptop-tablet hybrids: Designed from the tablet-first approach to laptop-tablet hybrids, the best Windows tablets pack beyond-HD touchscreens, sometimes with kickstands in their frames or provided via keyboard covers. These generally shine with a stylus, and range from the budget to the premium price ranges. Linux, Windows or Mac - which one is best for you? If running regular backups is important for home users, it's essential in business: losing even a small fraction of your most important data, for a brief period of time, could still be a real disaster in 2019 especially with GDPR around. You could try to protect yourself by copying files to local drives, but that takes time and effort. It also leaves you vulnerable to fire, theft and hardware failure, which is why automatically uploading your files to a cloud backup service is often a better idea. Choosing the right backup solution can seem tricky, as there's a lot to consider. How much storage space do you really need, for instance? Must the service support versioning (where multiple versions of documents are kept)? How should this be managed? Security is important, too. What sort of encryption options do you get? How is access to your data managed? What options are there for managing your users, seeing what they're doing, making sure they're complying with your policies and procedures? You're probably not going to get by with a free Dropbox account, but there are plenty of business providers ready to deliver the extras you and your company need. Here, in alphabetical order, are seven of the best. Also have a look at the best cloud storage serviceshttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/Ty44cn5GgojCWpKSrtRWGV.jpg Backblaze Business Backblaze has been delivering easy, low-cost backup services to consumers for years, so it's no surprise that its business products have the same focus on simplicity and value. There are no limits on capacity, for instance, or bandwidth. There's no need to browse multiple service levels and try to figure out what's right for you. Backblaze Business is just a single plan which offers unlimited backup space for one computer, at a flat rate of $50 (£40, AU$65) per computer per year. The backup process is just as straightforward, with the program initially backing up all your data – which can even be on external disks and USB keys – and then backing up individual files as they change. Your data is then accessible online via a web interface and mobile app. Bonus features include versioning, where file changes are kept for four weeks. An anti-theft feature records the IP address of your computer when it connects, and backup data can be sent on a flash drive or USB hard drive for speedy restores, anywhere in the world. Send the drive back within 30 days and they'll refund the price in full. The service now includes some handy central management tools. Admins can assign users to separate groups for custom billing, view details about their backup status and settings, and receive alerts on problems. There's even built-in support for BackBlaze's B2 cloud storage, an Amazon S3-like service which backs up servers and NAS for a flat $5 (£4, AU$6.50) per terabyte per month. In our experience BackBlaze only delivers mid-range backup performance, but that's fine for most purposes, and we think the service delivers in terms of features and value. You can sign up for Backblaze Business herehttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/MmLbsmSWQN4u8AwdR4wmsj.jpg Carbonite Computer Backup Core Unlike most backup products, Carbonite Computer Backup Core is licenced to run on as many computers, external hard drives and NAS drives as you need. Sounds good, and although the base price is higher than some – along with the $99 (£80, AU$129) per year per 100GB of extra storage – it's in line with other business backup companies. However, the service does deliver plenty for your money. Carbonite can manage just about every aspect of your backups, keeping training and other hassles to a minimum. Even the initial backup is largely automatic, and incremental backups then upload changed files only. Encryption is vital in keeping data safe once it has left your system, and Carbonite uses multiple technologies, including TLS during transfer and 128-bit Blowfish when stored. All your files are visible from a web interface, iOS and Android apps, and there are various ways to restore them: individually, or all, and everything in-between, along with deleted files or previous versions (for up to a month), or everything that's changed after a point in time (handy if you've been hit by ransomware). If your business grows and you need more, there’s an Ultimate plan you can upgrade to which costs $1,000 (£800, AU$1,300) annually and gets you 500GB, unlimited server image backups with bare metal restore. Put it all together and Carbonite Computer Backup Core is a quality package, although as mentioned, there are cheaper services around. You can sign up for Carbonite Computer Backup Core herehttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/VwUTbsaN8ihTkhs73uExgR.jpg CrashPlan Pro Some business backup providers try to compete on functionality, others on price, but CrashPlan Pro aims to do both. The service combines a low price with a lengthy list of features and controls, including some that are rarely found elsewhere. The package works on Linux, as well as PCs and Macs, for instance. There's unlimited storage space, including unlimited versioning, and it's easy to find documents by date, time or version (such a useful feature that it could be a reason for choosing this product in itself). The service is hugely customisable. You can have continuous or scheduled backups. Online destinations, local, or both. And it’s possible to use your preferred encryption or compression settings, retention policies and more. Some genuinely intelligent features help to enhance reliability. The package can watch for new documents in your chosen folders, for instance, ensuring files are protected as soon as possible. All this can be managed from a powerful web console. You're able to monitor backup progress and settings, configure clients, enforce policies and more, although notably this is desktop-only – the console doesn't support mobile browsers. There might be cheaper packages than CrashPlan Pro around, but on an overall level, they don't get close to its power and functionality. If you're a desktop user and need anything more than the backup basics, CrashPlan is definitely one for your shortlist. You can sign up for CrashPlan Pro herehttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/E2B2xNoziX3N6ZMYMbv5G8.jpg IDrive Business IDrive Business is a versatile cloud backup service which does its best to cater for just about every possible need. You're covered on PCs running anything from Windows 2000 up. There's Mac support, Linux backup scripts, iOS, Android and Windows mobile clients, and backup support for Windows Server, Microsoft SQL, Exchange, SharePoint and Oracle. The baseline 250GB storage may not be enough for everyone, but hybrid backup support – the ability to save some files locally – allows you to be more selective about which files head for the cloud, and which stay nearby. Once your data is online it can be accessed via a web interface, synced with computers or mobiles, and there's even a mechanism for sharing files via email, Facebook and Twitter. IDrive Express is a feature which enables quickly backing up or restoring your system via a physically shipped drive. Unusually, the Business plan allows three free backups per year. Despite all this functionality, the ability to create subaccounts for your storage space and a straightforward web-based management console helps you keep track of what's going on. Overall it's a likeable package, and if your budget is non-existent then also consider IDrive Personal. There's no server backup or subaccounts, but the basic features and 5GB of storage can be yours for free. You can sign up for IDrive Business herehttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/Wm5y2cbjCRb5z6qeKDh4rn.jpg MozyPro MozyPro is a small business-oriented cloud backup plan from Mozy, one of the most long-standing and popular backup providers. As you've probably noticed from the headline price, MozyPro isn't cheap, but the company does offer plenty of licencing flexibility. If 10GB for £110 ($145/AU$205) annually isn't enough you could get 50GB for £19 ($24, AU$31) per month, or £398 ($497, AU$647) for two years. Whatever you choose, backup is a largely automatic, set-and-forget process. But there is also some configurability if you need it, including backup scheduling and even a choice of encryption (a 256-bit AES personal encryption key, or a managed key for 448-bit Blowfish). Files can optionally be synced across all your hardware, including iOS or Android devices. Alternatively, you're able to access them all from a web interface. If you've opted for the baseline 10GB account, this won't give you much space to play with, but MozyPro's admin console offers some handy controls. Set up individual users and you're able to specify the number of devices they can back up, optionally set a limit for their total storage space, and enable or disable the sync feature. MozyPro's high price will be a problem for some, but we've found the company provides a fast and reliable service. If you've had problems with cheaper products, give it a try. You can sign up for MozyPro herehttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/igwGfdj5H4QfkheqPr6y9X.jpg SOS Online Backup for Business SOS Online Backup for Business may seem expensive, but there's a simple explanation – the standard package includes a host of features which are premium add-ons elsewhere. There's no limit on the number of devices you can back up, for instance. Servers are supported, too. SQL Server, Exchange, SharePoint? No problem at all. The core product removes many of the annoying restrictions you'll find elsewhere. There's unlimited versioning, no file size limits, no maximum retention times, and the service backs up just about everything: PCs from Vista up, Macs, iOS and Android devices, flash drives, network drives and more. SOS Online Backup offers an optional per-user encryption key which is never stored in the cloud, ensuring your data can't be read by anyone else. That's a major security plus, if you can put up with the usability issues. (You can't browse or access files from the web, and if you lose the key there's no way to recover them at all). In day-to-day use, the SOS Online Backup clients don't always deliver quite as much functionality as we'd like. They're still above average, though, and the service scores where it matters, being both fast and very easy-to-use. There's a 15-day free trial if you're interested in taking a look. You can sign up for SOS Online Backup for Business herehttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/3uLiVexjE2qkXWrrx7wpRM.jpg SugarSync Business SugarSync Business is a convenient file sync and cloud backup service with one or two handy enterprise-friendly extensions. The core of the package is its powerful and configurable sync service. You choose your folders, and they're uploaded then backed up in real-time, giving easy access to your data from PCs, Macs, Android or iOS devices. There's considerable control over file sharing. You can create public links to share data, invite specific people only, allow file viewing only, or give them editing permission, too. SugarSync's key advantage over similar services is that it's not just based around a single folder. You're able to choose any folder or folder tree, and have everything backed up and synced in the same way. Opting for the Business plan takes the package further with 1TB of storage space for up to three users. Remote management enables the creation of user accounts with storage limits and permissions, and there's a bonus option to remotely wipe one of your systems. Limited versioning support might be an issue for some. SugarSync only maintains the last five versions of a file, not much of a safety margin, and disappointing when some services have no fixed limits at all. On balance, SugarSync Business doesn't have quite as many features as other products, but the strong sync and file sharing technologies have kept it on our shortlist. Taxes are said to be one of only two certainties in life, besides death, so if you're going to have to pay your dues then it's well worth getting a software program to help, especially with Brexit looming in 2019. Fortunately, there are now a number of top-quality packages out there ready to take the stress and confusion out of managing, calculating and filing your taxes – leaving you to get on with the more important job of maximising your profits (or enjoying spending your hard-earned cash rather than filing tax returns). These are the five programs we think impress the most in terms of UK-compatible tax management, but which one suits you best will vary depending on the size of your business, how much automation you want, and any other software you've got set up. Because this is such a broad area – you might want an app that takes care of your whole accounting process, in partnership with an accountant, or you might just want a program that simply organises and files the records you've already got – we've tried to pick a range of different options. We’ve also rounded up the best payroll softwarehttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/JBsL4vyA4TkX7mwAz9ZH26.jpg Freeagent As we said in the intro, you can get tax software that simply collates all the records you've already got and sends them off to HMRC. At the other end of the scale you've got packages like Freeagent – fully featured accounting suites that cover tax records as well. Freeagent is a powerful, comprehensive option that suits small to medium businesses or individuals with a lot of records to keep. You can either opt to manage everything yourself or grant your accountant access to Freeagent as well, with the software able to make life easier for both of you along the way. It's certainly one of the most modern tools here, with a slick and stylish interface on the web and mobile, and a pile of useful features: automatic bank feeds, project time tracking, support for invoices and payroll, and so on. For tax management specifically, Freeagent keeps records of everything as you go, so you know exactly what you owe and why at the end of the year. You can submit your returns directly to HMRC through Freeagent with just a few clicks of the mouse, with tax forecasting and real-time updates included too. Sign up for Freeagent from $9.50 per month, with a free 30-day trial availablehttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/hLqPBUxNgsYWJ5yU5kpWBC.jpg GoSimpleTax Unlike Freeagent, GoSimpleTax isn't a complete accounting solution for freelancers and businesses – it focuses specifically on getting your taxes in order, and it does a very good job of this. Depending on your setup though, you'll have to do more work or get extra software to handle all the other components like invoicing and payroll. The software takes you step-by-step through the process of filing your taxes, making sure you're using the right terms and preparing the right forms, and looking out for any errors that might be creeping in (which could really cost you). You'll also get suggestions on where you could make some savings, which is always welcome. Everything slots in neatly with the online HMRC interface, so you don't have to waste time jumping from one app to another. As well as the web interface, you've got mobile apps you can use to input figures and get a handle on how your tax burden is looking (the mobile apps can even scan in receipts). What we like most about the software though is that you don't really need any expertise to complete a self-assessment of your tax responsibilities. As much as possible, the interface is written in jargon-free language, with clear indicators for where you need to input figures and how they get processed. Sign up for GoSimpleTax from £15 per year, with a free 14-day trial availablehttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/QebzTtwKMnWpsMjUK4MVPJ.jpg TaxCalc TaxCalc is on a mission to make filing your taxes as simple as possible, and we'd say it's doing a pretty impressive job of it: the software is packed with useful features for getting your documentation in order, and the system is officially recognised by HMRC, so all submissions should go smoothly. Whether you're an individual, a limited company or an accountancy firm, TaxCalc has a software solution tailored specifically for you, and it can even plug straight into bigger accounting packages such as Xero. In some cases you can get your documentation in order in as little as 30 minutes, TaxCalc claims. The intuitive, step-by-step web interface guides you through the process of filing your taxes from start to finish – from picking the right form, through entering all the details about how much you've earned, to submitting the form and making sure there are no errors. The tax you owe is calculated in the background as you go. This isn't the most comprehensive or the most well-designed tax software we've ever come across, but it is friendly, functional and accessible, and comes with all the tools you're going to need to hit that tax deadline. Sign up for TaxCalc from £30 per yearhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/46ffurfSny2Mg72npdDRcR.jpg Nomisma No one wants to spend an age getting their tax affairs in order, and few products take you through the process of filing returns as quickly and as simply as Nomisma does. It also gives you a variety of basic bookkeeping tools, so if you're looking for something that does more than just taxes, Nomisma might be it. On the business management side, the software lets you track invoices and orders, keep on top of bills and contracts, and produce a variety of reports on the state of your financial affairs (including VAT comparisons where needed). Not only can it save you time, it can save you money by letting you know where everything is at any given point. In the tax filing and self-assessment components, you'll find the software is fully HMRC compliant and registered with the government, so you can submit your documents without leaving Nomisma. A lot of the data you're going to need can be auto-populated from the bookkeeping module, but you can buy the tax module separately if needed. Throughout, Nomisma gives you a clean and modern-looking interface to work with on the web, and if you've got a mobile phone there's an app available for keeping tabs on expenses while on the go. It can also help your accountant calculate the figures at the end of the year, if you've got one. Sign up for Nomisma from £17.50 a month, with a free trial availablehttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/xzgNJqMbTJDn8BmVG8vEJY.jpg ABC Self-Assessment As we said at the outset, tax software packages come in all shapes and sizes, from very basic tools to get you over the line right at the end of the process, to fully fledged accounting suites that include everything you need to run a small business. If you just want some straightforward help as tax deadline day approaches, give ABC Self-Assessment a try. Whether you're submitting your self-assessment as an individual or a partnership, or you have some other complication to contend with – you're non-resident in the UK maybe – ABC Self-Assessment will point you towards the right form. While ABC Self-Assessment presents an interface that's not much different to the one you'll get if you log into the HMRC website and do your self-assessment there, it does streamline the process so you only see the questions and fields that are relevant to your circumstances. It's perfect if you don't want to spend much money but find the HMRC site a little overwhelming. What you don't get are any accountancy or bookkeeping features, so the onus is on you to have kept decent records up until this point. You might find that ABC Self-Assessment works well with your existing financial software (or just your existing Excel spreadsheet). Years ago, many folks needed an accountant to do their taxes, with the daunting task of figuring out which tax forms to collect from the local public library, needing to calculate the tax burden on those dreaded tax tables, knowing on which line to enter all those numbers, not mention the difficulty of making an itemized list. With even a simple tax return requiring quite a bit of labor, it is no wonder accountants thrived. These days, the right accounting software can turn even a novice tax filer into a DIY accountant. These programs ask a series of questions as part of an interview process, and then do the heavy lifting to put all the correct numbers into the right boxes, and even transmit your return electronically. Here are five great choices to cater for your tax needs in 2019 Also take a look at the best free personal finance softwarehttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/F8ByLaNwXwMGsDBG3fhkZR.jpg TaxSlayer TaxSlayer positions itself as a bargain tax solution, offering prices that undercut the competition across multiple tiers. The base tier of TaxSlayer for basic returns, known as SimplyFree, offers a Federal and State return, including the eFile, all for free, but only for 1040EZ forms. The more popular Classic tier includes all major Federal tax forms, and includes a W-2 import for a dirt cheap $24, but the State forms are an additional $4.95 fee, which should be fine for most users. The offerings top out at $47, and cover the specific needs of the self-employed, including contractors and 1099’s, and also require the additional fee for a State return. There is an online guide to assist users in choosing the best version of the program for their needs. Even at these affordable prices, a notable feature is the included phone and email support (24 to 48 hour response) on the lower tiers, and live chat on the higher tiers. You can download TaxSlayer herehttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/zdGP2QEuk2zMuDzttXTCLP.jpg TaxAct Sporting a simplified interface, TaxAct takes a no-frills approach to the chore of doing the taxes in the cloud, while undercutting the prices of the bigger players. TaxAct starts with a free tier, which is fine for filing a Federal 1040EZ return, although the State is $17 additionally. There are five tiers in total, topping out at the Premium tier for $69.95 which covers all situations, although the State return at this level adds an additional $39.99. TaxAct has all the basics covered, including importing W-2’s, and importation of prior years’ returns. There is also mobile app support for calculating returns on the go, and you can even use your smartphone camera to capture your W-2 income form. TaxAct eschews email support in favor of phone and chat support. It also offers a $100,000 accuracy guarantee. You can download TaxAct herehttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/7aiPFTpihvQi7o6TCFU259.jpg H&R Block TaxCut Formerly known as Kiplinger’s TaxCut, H&R Block TaxCut has been around for many years, and is a full featured tax solution. With four tiers, it can handle just about any return. Unlike some other offerings, TaxCut has no free tier, and the simpler returns start with the Basic one which retails at $29.95. While it includes a Federal eFile, adding a State return means a hefty $39.95 extra, and for a State eFile it's an additional $19.95. Unless you live in that few handful of states with no State income tax, such as Florida, most users are better served with the next tier up, Deluxe, which for $54.95 is better value as it includes both the Federal and State return, although the State eFile still adds an additional $19.95. The standout feature of TaxCut is that there are approximately 12,000 H&R outlets that are available to users of the program when some in-person hand-holding is needed to get the job done - for an additional cost. Online chat, like its competitors, is included for no extra outlay. You can download H&R Block TaxCut herehttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/4zscE4viS2quJrSTyktrje.jpg TurboTax Ask someone to name a program for tax prep, and chances are they will say TurboTax. That’s not by accident as this firm is an old pro in this area, having its origins in the mid-1980’s when TurboTax was first created by the software company Chipsoft. The online offerings start with a free tier for Federal taxes, and the State adds a reasonable $29.95; this is fine for a 1040EZ or 1040A return, but not a full 1040. The full 1040 requires a step up to the Deluxe tier, which goes for $59.99, and the State return adds $39.99 to the package. TurboTax includes the 'ItsDeductible' feature, which can assist in calculating the value of donated items. It can also store your documents online for safekeeping if they are needed later, such as for an audit. You can download TurboTax herehttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/LAaUyVUJn6yKT9KQB5Jz6C.jpg FreeTaxUSA Getting your taxes done for free does sound like an attractive offer, and yes, the name of this product does indicate the truth. Federal taxes can indeed be done for free - for all returns including a full 1040, and even more complicated tax situations such as an Earned Income Credit, or a K-1. Adding a State return tacks on an affordable $12.95 fee. Compared to the competition, FreeTaxUSA does indeed represent the bargain here. There is a higher Deluxe tier offered, which adds Audit Assist, Priority Support and can handle amended returns, but true to the cheapskate origins, it's only an additional $6.99. You can download FreeTaxUSA herehttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/digital-home/~4/T8vQvQeQNrw

MP3 players might not be as popular as they were a decade ago, but that doesn't mean they're outdated technology. In fact, modern MP3 players do a significantly better job at storing your entire music library at a higher bitrate than your 2009 iPod Shuffle ever could. To that end, if you're on the look-out for the best MP3 player that money can buy in 2019, you've come to the perfect place: Here we'll run down all the top choices, and tell you everything you need to know to make a sensible buying decision. While most folks are more than happy to use their phones as portable music players, you're here because you're looking for a separate music player – one that not only stores your music, but makes it sound its best. The best MP3 players, due to their sound fidelity and durability, are the ultimate devices if you love listening to music – and new innovations in sound are making them even better with each passing year. That said, remember that the device (in this case an MP3 player) is only one link in a long audio chain. You’ll also need to think about what audio codec your library is in, and you will obviously also need an great pair of headphones, (high-fidelity DACs are meaningless if you’re using a cheap pair of earbuds). If you need a little help, check out the best headphones for 2019. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/pxUZ7CG6y4xEefLncaeyDB.jpg Best MP3 player: Onkyo DP-X1A Onkyo has been a well-known and esteemed name in audio for years, and for good reason. The Onkyo DP-X1A may not be the most compact player on this list, but it is the best all-around, offering huge customizability, an intuitive interface, and fantastic sound quality. Let’s start with the design, which is pretty nice. In general, the DP-X1A looks a little bit like a phone, but much thicker, and is completely optimized for audio use. How so? Well, for starters, it has two audio ports – one headphone jack and one balanced output for those interested in a cleaner and overall better quality sound. Additionally, the device has an easy-to-use volume wheel, as well as physical playback buttons and two microSD card slots for those with a sizable collection of music. The player is built with a full version of Android 5.1, complete with features like Wi-Fi connectivity and the Google Play Store. Which results in an MP3 Player that is to Android what the iPod Touch is to iOS. Unlike the iPod, however, the Onkyo DP-X1A is built for super-high-quality audio. Speaking of the sound quality, it's an absolute dream. It supports a range of music formats, including FLAC, OGG, WAV, MP3, ALAC, and more. In terms of hardware, the device has two chipsets, one to power the overall device, and one to handle the DAC and amplifier – resulting in a noise-free experience. We tested the player with multiple pairs of headphones across multiple price ranges, and were stunned with the clarity and exceptional quality of the audio. There’s a reason the Onkyo DP-X1A sits atop this list – it’s a beast in the portable audio world. Read our full review: Onkyo DP-X1A Digital Audio Player http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/U6D3ofXKriRQ8SrHtFkjL4.jpg http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/qSi7uDDobPUxLwqdodVxMP.jpg Best MP3 player: HiFiMan SuperMini HiFiMan is perhaps best known for its headphones, but it makes some pretty great MP3 players, too. For an example, look no further than the SuperMini. The SuperMini, as the name suggests, is a little smaller than most of the other players on this list, but that doesn’t seem to come at a huge cost – it’ll still deliver excellent audio quality and it’s pretty easy to use, too. The device, which has a price tag of $399 (£400, AU$399), doesn’t have any onboard storage – you’ll have to buy a microSD card separately. It does, however, support a pretty huge range of audio formats, including FLAC, DSD, WAV, MP3, and AIFF, and audio with a sample rate of up to 192kHz. The user interface may not be as flashy as some others on this list, but it’s still pretty easy to use. It’s a monochrome display, and is controlled via three buttons located under the screen. The tradeoff to using a monochrome display, however, is that the battery life is decent, sitting in at a hefty 22 hours. In terms of sound, the high-end on this player is nice and crisp, without being too aggressive by any means. On top of that, there are plenty of mids to go around, without the player at all straying into inaccurate territory. We were a little skeptical of the idea of a player from a company that offers players well into the multi-thousands of dollars range, but the SuperMini holds its own, and at a decent price. Read the full review: HiFiMan SuperMini This product is only available in the US and UK at the time of this writing. Australian readers: check out a fine alternative in the Onkyo DP-X1A http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/U6D3ofXKriRQ8SrHtFkjL4.jpg http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/jMUNeXZNXPkwVtG972nWcU.jpg Best MP3 player: Astell & Kern AK Jr Astell & Kern is known for building top-notch audio devices at reasonable prices, and for that reason we think the Astell & Kern AK Jr is the best mid-range MP3 player out of the ones we've seen (and heard). In fact, after spending some time using it, we would argue that it’s a pretty serious contender against even much more expensive players. Before diving into the player’s capabilities, you’ll notice how well-designed it is. The sleek, metallic look is very classy, and using it gives you a similar “status symbol” feel as you’ll get with the iPhone. The AK Jr comes in at $259 (£250, AU$399), which is a very reasonable price for a device of this calibre. For that price, you’ll get 64GB of onboard storage, though there is a microSD card slot in case you want to expand upon that storage. On top of that, it supports all major audio formats, including FLAC, WAV, MP3, AAC, AIFF, and more – and it’s able to play at sample rates of up to 192kHz. The interface of the device is relatively easy to control, too. The home screen simply gives you options for songs, albums, artists, and so on. Tap through using the touchscreen, and you’ll be able to select the music you want to listen to. It would be nice if that touchscreen was a little more responsive, but you get used to it. Battery life sits in at around nine hours, which isn't amazing, but not terrible either. So how does it sound? In one word: beautiful. Music is dynamic and crisp, with a nice and powerful sound in every aspect. The soundstage on these, when paired with a great pair of headphones, is huge – that’s to say the left and right are clearly defined, while instruments placed at the center of a mix are given plenty of room to breathe. We particularly enjoyed the guitar solo on AC/DC’s Back in Black, while Eminem’s rap on Lose Yourself cut straight through the mix – exactly the way it was supposed to. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/U6D3ofXKriRQ8SrHtFkjL4.jpg http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/iFxcxPRJhrYixrnY2Aq2ah.jpg Best MP3 player: Apple iPod Touch We all know the name “iPod”... which is probably due to the fact that it changed the game when it came to consumer audio in the early aughts. All these years later, though, they're still some of the easiest to use, most versatile and best-looking players on the market – especially the iPod Touch. Why's that? Well, it’s practically an iPhone that’s not a phone. The device is able to run most apps on the app store, making it much more than an MP3 player. It’s not as audiophile-targeted as most other MP3 players – it doesn’t support FLAC or DSD formats, for example – but it does support WAV, MP3, AAC, and so on. It also tops out at 44.1kHz (CD-level audio), though for most people that will be more than enough. The iPod Touch is probably the easiest MP3 player on the market to use. It’s controlled using a touchscreen, which is ultra-responsive, and boasts a colorful look and bright display. Of course, you probably didn’t need us to tell you that. The device starts at $199 (£209, AU$299) for the 32GB version, or $299 (£299, AU$449) for the 128GB version. As mentioned, the iPod Touch does cap out at 44.1kHz audio, but it still sounds pretty good – and if you really want it to it can provide an audiophile experience through an external DAC connected to the Lightning port. Of course, if you’re going to go to all that trouble, why not just buy an audiophile player? http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/U6D3ofXKriRQ8SrHtFkjL4.jpg http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/FFPB9gUaLdhXgtvcrX9aVo.jpg Best MP3 player: SanDisk Clip Sport Plus Looking for an MP3 player to take running with you? If so, you probably want something small and light – it probably doesn’t need to hold day’s worth of music, and it probably doesn’t need to offer the highest audio quality out there. Most of all, you probably don’t want to fork out a ton of cash for it. If that’s you, in our view, the SanDisk Clip Sport Plus is the best option. For starters, the device offers 16GB of storage, and while that may not be much for your phone, 16GB can hold a ton of songs. On top of that, despite being built for sport, it actually supports a pretty wide range of audio formats – including MP3, AAC, FLAC, WAV, and WMA. Perhaps most important for a device like this is the battery life, and it’ll last you a good 20 hours. You’ll even get Bluetooth, which is a huge deal for many who will be using this while running or performing other activities and don’t want cables to get in the way. The interface is relatively easy to use too. Sure, it’s a little dated, and isn’t as powerful as what you’ll find on your smartphone, but it’s still capable as a music player. It’s not touch-sensitive, though: instead, you navigate through hardware buttons that also serve as playback controls when music is playing, but we didn’t have any issues. As for the sound, as long as you don’t expect full audiophile-level quality here (you won’t get it), we think you'll find the sound very capable. Overall it's slightly muddy with a small dip in clarity, but for most that won’t matter – especially when you're out on a run or hitting the weights at the gym. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/U6D3ofXKriRQ8SrHtFkjL4.jpg http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/N5i8DFavXN4zcKXiGdMd2G.jpg Best MP3 player: Sony NW-A45 Walkman If the idea of using iTunes freaks you out and spending more than $200 on an MP3 player just isn't plausible, then your best MP3 player is probably the Sony NW-A45 Walkman. Packed with 16GB of built-in storage and a slick touchscreen UI, the NW-A45 starts at around $149 and comes in multiple colors that will suit any taste. For audiophiles, the NW-A45 supports Hi-Res playback, plus DSEE H can help restore lossy files back to a near lossless state. Unlike your phone, Sony's Walkman comes with an S-Master HX digital amp that's powerful enough to drive some relatively high-impedance headphones while still accommodating low-impedance cans, too. Versatile and easy to use, the Sony NW-A45 gets the nod as our MP3 player pick for the first-time buyer. What MP3 players does TechRadar recommend? So, what do you need to look for in an MP3 player? Well, the most important thing you need to think about is the audio codec your music library is in. Anyone who uses iTunes will probably have a music library completely filled with Apple’s proprietary AAC codec, and luckily most MP3 players will support that codec. However, if you consider yourself an audiophile, you’ll need support for lossless codecs like FLAC, WAV and ALAC, as these codecs don’t use the compression methods used on lossy codecs like AAC or MP3. However, they will take up more space. You’ll also need to consider how much music is in your, well, music collection and then how much storage you’ll need. This is especially the case when you’re using codecs like FLAC, which just devour space. Often MP3 players also have an included microSD card slot, which allows you to expand upon the included storage as your library expands – but normally only up to a certain size, normally around 512GB. Here's the best part though: unlike smartphones, MP3 players are built to last, so there’s no need to go on an endless two-year upgrade-cycle like you might with a smartphone. This means it’s probably in your best interests to take some time and find the one that’s right for you, as you will probably be using it for a few years to come. While Apple has kept relatively tight control over its App Store, Google has historically been a little looser with what it lets onto its own app storefront. Although the tech giant has made efforts recently to clean up the Play Store, there are still some bad actors getting through. A report from cybersecurity firm Trend Micro has found a batch of 29 photo- and selfie-related apps that have all been acting maliciously towards the users that installed them. The bad behaviour ranges from money-making schemes like serving up inappropriate and fraudulent full-screen ads when users unlock their phone, to potentially more troubling activities like stealing user photos and uploading them to an external server. What’s worse is that a majority of the apps in question have been downloaded thousands of times, and three of them have been installed over a million times each. Trend Micro states that a large number of these downloads occurred in Asia, especially India, where photo-related apps are exceedingly popular. Google's deleted millions of fake reviews from the Play Store in the past weekDodgy tacticsSome of these apps have utilized tricks to hide the app icon to make it more difficult to uninstall, and when the aforementioned pop-up ads run, there’s often no indication that the particular app is the cause of them. The majority of the full-screen ads use typical pop-up scam tactics, with text claiming the user has won something (usually an iPhone), or in some cases posing as a commercial pornography service, but clicking through the link will lead to a phishing scam where users must enter their details to ‘claim their prize’. Half a billion Android users downloaded malware from Play StoreAmong the 29 apps that Trend Micro uncovered, another offered to beautify a user’s selfies, although once the user uploads a photo to the external server, they are then served with a fake update prompt which leads, again, to a phishing site. The bad actor is then free to use the uploaded selfies for such nefarious purposes as fake social media profile pictures. After being made aware of the problematic apps, Google has removed them from its Play Store. However, as with any app you're considering installing, it’s always worth checking out the store reviews to see if any other users have found them exhibiting suspicious behavior. Verily is one of the other companies besides Google under the Alphabet umbrella, and the experimental, innovative "life sciences" firm apparently has some interesting tech on the way – smart shoes that can track your weight and detect falls. The news comes from sources speaking to CNBC, sources who say it's still early days for the shoes but that prototypes are already being shown off. As you might expect, the footwear will also track the steps you take through the day, saving you the hassle of strapping a fitness tracker to your wrist. Fall detection is of course something that's built into the latest Apple Watch. It's particularly reassuring for elderly users, who can rely on their wearable to alert friends and family should they take a tumble and not be able to get up again. The future of wearablesVerily is apparently still shopping around for partners to help bring the smart shoes to market, but whether or not they ever see the light of day as a consumer product, it's an interesting hint at the way the industry is moving. The wearables of the future may well come built right into our clothing, not just tracking essential activity and fitness data, but also doing more with that data – identifying possible health issues that need checking out. Smart shoes could spot sudden weight gain that might otherwise be missed, for example Verily is also working on a smart spoon that can reduce hand shake in those with movement disorders, as well as a smart contact lens to improve vision. In the past the company has also demoed its own smartwatch, though it never went on sale. Here are 7 wearables we think you should be looking out for in 2019Via The Verge Header image: Fitbit http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/wrfMoft0UQU

Back in 2012 when Samsung took the crown for the biggest shipments in smartphone market from Nokia, it established itself as a brand to be reckoned with. The South-Korean electronics manufacturer received similar response both in terms of sales and popularity as Nokia and it thrived. Until Xiaomi entered India in 2014 with the Mi 3 and ruined Samsung's party. In January 2019, Xiaomi trumped Samsung to become the smartphone company to ship the most number of smartphones in India. It is not a secret that Samsung was struggling in the mid-range smartphone market after Xiaomi unleashed a bunch of really smart smartphones! After waiting it out in the wild, Samsung has come up with their latest take on a modern budget smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy M20 which will be going up against the likes of Redmi Note 6 Pro, the undisputed king of mid-rangers. The Galaxy M20 is one of the first phones in the M-series that made its debut in India which is why it is an important statement from Samsung in itself. Let's see how this goes. Price and availability The Redmi Note 6 Pro comes in two variants- 4GB RAM/64GB storage at Rs 13,999 and 6GB RAM/64GB storage at Rs 15,999. It is available on Flipkart and Mi store India. Samsung Galaxy M20 starts at Rs 10,990 for the variant with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage while buyers will have to shell out Rs 12,990 for 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. Here, Samsung has a much affordable option in the base variant which could draw in takers who are on a strict Rs 10,000 budget. Having said that, the real competition is between the 4GB RAM variants where Samsung is again able to undercut Xiaomi by over Rs 1,000. Xiaomi also has a variant with 6GB RAM which is priced at Rs 15,999 and there's no official information from Samsung about a 6GB variant for the Galaxy M20. With that out of the way, here's how both the smartphones actually feel in the hands. Design and Display http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/xAzPhfkHntpzgYosRQsCUU.jpg Picking up the Galaxy M20, I was reminded of my encounter with the company's first Android Go smartphone, the J2 Core. The chassis is made out of polycarbonate and curves around the edges to accommodate the display. It weighs around 186 g and is 2.93-inches in width. On the other end of the spectrum is the Redmi Note 6 Pro with its metal construction weighing around 181 g making it fairly lightweight than the Galaxy M20. In terms of handling, both kind of builds come with their pros and cons. Xiaomi hasn't tinkered around much with the fundamental design that we see most of the Xiaomi phones acquire. From someone who gets access to these smartphones than a usual buyer, the design of Redmi Note 6 looks overused now. But hey, it works, so we shouldn't complain. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/q9CVbQjTVohuMkfuPaaou3.jpg The Galaxy M20 however, is an all plastic build. It doesn't have that matte finish on the back and makes us do with a glossy rear panel instead which is a smudge magnet. Due to the polycarbonate nature of the build, it will be accustomed to scratches and dents more than the Note 6 Pro. The M20 is also a bit narrower than the Note 6 Pro which makes for an easy grip for people with big hands. The extra heft seem to balance out evenly across the body giving it a solid feel in hand. The same cannot be said for the Note 6 Pro which is a bit slippery due to its all-metal built and a slimmer profile. To say that the Galaxy M20 doesn't match up to the design standards of this budget segment would be too much. It is a differently designed smartphone which is makes it a potential option for buyers to consider just like the Redmi Note 6 Pro. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/72KWeD7UEJ4qVvJLnsodec.jpg Samsung has finally made its terms with the notch and the Galaxy M20 is the first example of the company adopting the notch design on their smartphones. Samsung revealed the different notch-design that they were working on back during their developers conference and the Galaxy M20 is just one in a long list of Samsung smartphones that will feature notch on the front in 2019. The M20 features a 6.3-inch Full HD+ (2340 x 1080 pixels) IPS display which has a 19.5:9 aspect ratio due to the infinity-v notch. This is your run-of-the-mill waterdrop notch which allows for 83% screen-to-body ratio giving us more screen estate to play around with. The Note 6 Pro has the original notch design on the front with a screen measuring 6.26-inches diagonally. The IPS panel has a Full HD+ (2280 x 1080 pixels) resolution with around 81% screen-to-body ratio and a 19:9 aspect ratio. The screen is topped by a 2.5D Corning's Gorilla Glass panel which offers more protection to the display than usual. The same isn't present on the Galaxy M20. In regular usage, the screen on the Galaxy M20 looks more appealing to the eye. A lot of this can be credited to how the screen blends into the UI efficiently. Samsung has also been able to narrow out the bezels even further resulting in sleek bezels. The chin is also narrower than that of the Note 6 Pro. This is something that Samsung brings in with its years of experience of manufacturing panels. The screen on the Galaxy M20 is in its real sense able to provide a full view experience and this can be observed just by looking at the two phones. The OG notch has lost its charm hasn't it? That's not to say that the display panel on the M20 is by any means better than the one on the Redmi Note 6 Pro. Both the phones edge out each other in a couple of ways. With Note 6 Pro, there's a very soft light-blue tint on the screen which is why colors look soft and a bit dull in comparison to the Galaxy M20. But, the pictures and videos on the Note 6 Pro look a bit more crisp than on the Galaxy M20. Then again, visually, the M20's screen looks a lot better due to the small notch. So, it really here and there if I may say so. From a content consumer perspective, both the phones have a really good display, it is the visual experience which differs due to the different types of notch. Camera http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/rHGuGyaiH4S4ZBCTqraaQB.jpg Dual cameras on both the phones allow for a good photography experience and enthusiasts should keep these two in mind. The setup on M20 consists of a primary 13MP snapper with an f/1.9 aperture and 1.12 micron sensor. It supports PDAF and is assisted by a single LED flash. There's a 12MP primary camera on the Note 6 Pro with an aperture of f/1.9 and a sensor size of 1.4 micron. In daylight, M20's camera produces images that are well exposed, with details but more saturated. The Note 6 Pro on the other hand, produces fairly good detailed pictures that have natural colours. On the M20, pictures were often saturated, with slightly more contrast and brightness. The images from the Note 6 Pro are less detailed but manage to maintain colour accuracy, white balance and exposure. At night, the camera on the Note 6 Pro shines as it is able to capture more details in the scene albeit with a lot of noise. There were times when a lot of the shots were overexposed which is an indication of the sensor feeding off of light, a bit more than usual. The autofocus is snappy. It has a learning curve which is really good for photographers to play around with. Both the phones sport a 5MP secondary camera, the one on the M20 has f/2.2 aperture with a wide-angle lens that captures upto 120-degree more scene in the camera. It is this capability which should attract photography enthusiasts. The M20 is able to create some really good-looking wide-angled imagery which is a plus for any smartphone in our books. Redmi Note 6 Pro's secondary 5MP camera assists in depth sensing to create pictures with a depth-of-field effect. The camera is able to nail this part as the portrait mode pictures from it look natural, detailed with exposure well under control. It is also able to retain blacks in direct sunlight which in the case of M20, just blows it out of the water with exposure. Front cameras on the Note 6 Pro ace against the M20 as they are able to create pictures that are much more detailed, with natural colours and good white balance. The M20 just doesn't seem upto the job, beauty mode on or off. Both the cameras are fairly advanced in the budget and with the list of pros and cons above, they shine in some or the other aspect. While one could live with a less detailed picture that is more naturally accurate, others might be put off due to the little difference in detail retention. Similarly, the colour representation on pictures from the Galaxy M20's camera doesn't really do justice to the eye and might be a downside for some. Performance, UI and battery Samsung Galaxy M20 benchmark scores AnTuTu: 109220 Geekbench 4 (single-core): 1320 Geekbench 4 (multi-core): 4087Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro benchmark scores AnTuTu: 116257 Geekbench 4 (single-core): 1337 Geekbench 4 (multi-core): 4903 First lets start with how both the Galaxy M20 and Redmi Note 6 Pro fare on paper. The M20 is powered by Exynos 7904 chipset with an octa-core CPU and Mali-G71 MP2 graphics processor. Two Cortex-A73 clusters for high-demanding tasks clocked at 1.8GHz and six Cortex-A53 power-efficient cores, each at 1.6GHz make up the CPU. In competition, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 has almost become like the standard offering on mid-range smartphones. The SD 636 is fabricated on a 14nm architecture process just like the Exynos 7904. It's octa-core CPU consists of four performance and four power-efficient cores. The Kryo 260 is based on Cortex-A73 and Cortex-A53 cores but is a little more powerful and hence makes the Galaxy M20 lag behind. Couple that with the fact that the RAM capacity tops out at 4GB, there's little that can be done to improve performance. The CPU on the Redmi Note 6 Pro can take on the Galaxy M20 with using less than 30% of its total running capacity. That difference can easily be spotted in the benchmark scores of both the phones. The Galaxy M20 scored 109220 points on AnTuTu benchmark while Geekbench 4 awarded it 1320 points on single-core and 4087 points on multi-core performance. Whereas, Redmi Note 6 scored 1337 points on single-core and 4903 points on multi-core performance test of Geekbench 4. On AnTuTu, The Note 6 Pro scored 116257 points. There are a couple of things that went wrong for the Galaxy M20. Even the graphics processor on the Galaxy M20 is dated now and can in no way match the graphics performance to that on the Redmi Note 6 Pro. We played a couple of round of PUBG Mobile and gameplay on the Note 6 Pro superseded that of the Galaxy M20. Multi-tasking on the Galaxy M20 feels a lot more slower in comparison to the Note 6 Pro, otherwise it runs apps in a breeze. The waterdrop notch is comparatively smaller than the regular one on the Note 6 Pro hence, Samsung is able to take the edge with a larger screen. Google's Android 8.1 Oreo runs on both the smartphones with their fair share of customization. The Galaxy M20 returns with the Experience 9.5 UI while the Redmi Note 6 Pro has its MIUI 10 skin. We have to say, the UI on the M20 looks more appealing and fresh. This is also due to the smaller notch and a visually large screen estate with thin bezels. The UI blends into the screen and overall feels more like a part of the phone. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/xBZzJTj3dFv8VafaNrhi7H.jpg Animations in Samsung's Experience 9.5 UI feel a lot more natural however are marred by frame drops and lags. Blame Samsung for not using a better processor and even a bumped up RAM, but this is what they're offering. In regular use, the Note 6 Pro has a much optimized user interface which allows for faster operations and speed, something that the M20 lacks. The Note 6 Pro takes every advantage of the Snapdragon 636 and that just shows. The advantage of a bigger 5,000mAh battery is quite obvious, every unit counts, right? Samsung is able to offer a 1000mAh more than what is present on the Redmi Note 6 Pro. In our day worth of heavy usage consisting of activities like browsing the internet, going through Facebook feeds, playing a round or two of PUBG, watching YouTube videos; the Galaxy M20 was left with 26% charge while the Note 6 Pro still had 34% juice in it. The interesting thing here was that both the phones were showing an estimated battery life remaining that was quite close. With the same usage pattern the M20 was going to last for 13 hours while the Note 6 Pro would die down in 12 hours 49 minutes. The bigger capacity battery does come into play here. In our battery tests, the M20 on an average showed a 12% dip in battery over the course of an hour. The Note 6 Pro had an average of around 14%, which is close but falls 1000mAh short. For buyers, the thing to keep in mind is that while the M20 has a bigger battery, it doesn't translate to a good overall performance which the Note 6 Pro is able to provide. If one plainly wants a longer lasting battery, sure they can blindly go ahead with the M20, but that comes at an expense which is something they should be aware of. Verdict The Samsung Galaxy M20 comes at a time when people have been too much used to Xiaomi's offerings. Surely it doesn't come with sweets in hand but instead challenges the king. The usurper, M20 is priced in a very sweet spot between the different variants of the Note 6 Pro and almost wants all of you to look at it. While the performance of the Note 6 Pro is unmatched, there are a couple of things that the Galaxy M20 does right like the fresh design, waterdrop notch, a big battery and a good camera. Users who are out in the market looking for a new smartphone in budget ranging from Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 could get either of these smartphones. While the 6GB RAM variant of the Redmi Note 6 Pro is for power users, there is just a difference of Rs 1,000 in the top variant of the M20 and the base variant of the Note 6 Pro. If you're a sucker for performance, less lags and smooth user experience, the Redmi Note 6 Pro is what you should choose. On the contrary, if users are looking for something different than the usual Xiaomi phones, Samsung Galaxy M20 makes for a worth competitor. Being the avid phone fans that we are, we're counting down the days to MWC 2019, the biggest mobile tech industry event of the year – and we've just been given a sneak preview of some of the phones on the way from battery company Energizer. We've already had official word that Energizer is bringing no fewer than 26 handsets to the MWC party at the end of February, and thanks to GSMArena we've now got official-looking shots of a handful of them. Don't get too excited though – in terms of specs these phones are going to be distinctly mid-range. One feature of note is a dual-lens, pop-up front-facing camera on the U620S Pop and U630S Pop models, which means no need for a notch on the display, and probably some fancy wide-angle trickery for those all important selfie shots. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/wUmyb57DHUnq6J55zG7RUm.jpg The U620S Pop and U630S Pop (credit: GSMArena) You'll also see how when the camera is raised on the U620S Pop and U630S Pop models, the phones look like the shape of a battery – clever, huh? Other phones showcased by GSMArena show handsets with small tear-drop style notches instead. Apparently the specs of these phones are still subject to change, but MediaTek Helio chipsets, 720p screens, 4GB-6GB of RAM and 64GB-128GB of on-board storage are said to be on the way. The rear-facing camera setups are a mix of dual-lens and triple-lens cameras, with battery sizes topping out at 4,000mAh. Energizer – which has briefly dabbled in smartphones before – has also said it's readying a foldable phone and a phone with a gigantic 18,000mAh battery for MWC 2019, so consider our appetite for our Barcelona trip well and truly whetted. Today's the day for the tensely anticipated rematch between Eleider Alvarez vs Sergey Kovalev. If it's even half as good as the first fight then we're in for a treat. And the good news is that you're in the perfect place to find a Alvarez vs Kovalev live stream so you can tune into the WBO light heavyweight title rematch from absolutely anywhere. After the war that these two fought out in August last year, it was no great surprise to see a rematch announced a few months later (even if it did take ESPN stepping in to make that happen). The first encounter ended in victory for the Colombian Alvarez, after he brutally knocked out his Russian foe in the seventh round. Alvarez will be hot favorite to defend his belt - and his perfect 24-0 record - in Texas. But 35-year-old Kovalev may see this as his last chance at championship glory and will be desperate to restore his reputation and national pride. Below we'll talk you through the options for tuning into the fight. Inbox by Gmail – the AI-driven, automated version of Gmail – is getting shuttered next month as the company switches its focus back to its original email client. Before that happens, it looks like Gmail for mobile might be getting some of the Inbox features. Specifically, bundles, reminders, and pinned items, all spotted in a screenshot of a test build of Gmail posted to Reddit (via 9to5Google). Google has already said bundles will be making their way over to Gmail – that's emails grouped together by particular topics, such as newsletters, travel plans, or messages related to finances. We've got no way of verifying that the screenshot (supposedly from Google's own internal testing) is actually genuine, but it would be a surprise if Google wasn't busy working on bringing some of Inbox's best features over to Gmail. A tale of two email appsInbox by Gmail appeared in late 2014 as Gmail with added extras: more ways of automatically sifting through your messages, email snoozing and smart replies (which have both since been added to Gmail proper), and various other advanced features. Saying that Inbox "has been a great place to experiment with new ideas", Google announced the imminent closure of the service in September 2018. At the time it promised that various Inbox features would make their way over to the main Gmail, and now it looks like that process has almost been completed. Both apps always shared the same email archive, so switching back and forth was never too difficult. A major redesign of Gmail on the web was rolled out last year, and the same look has been appearing in the mobile apps over the last few days. The Six Nations 2019 has arrived and this year the two favourites, Ireland and England, are going head-to-head in their very first game of the tournament. As if that wasn't pressure enough, this year will also see the teams play in the Rugby World Cup, meaning this performance could set the level for the rest of the year. All that excitement and pressure can be enjoyed by you, live, using this guide that will tell you how to stream England vs Ireland from anywhere in the world. The reigning Six Nations champions, Ireland, may be favourites but the England team looks very strong indeed with the mighty Manu Tuilagi back for the first time since 2014 following recurring injuries. He'll be joined by both the Vunipola brothers, Maro Itoje, Elliot Daly starting as full-back and captain Owen Farrell. Meanwhile, Ireland's Johnny Sexton (the reigning World Player of the Year, no less) has had knee issues for some time due to tendon trouble. Similarly, scrum-half Luke McGrath is out due to knee ligament damage, but Conor Murray's knee has recovered so he will be back on the field. This game is set to be a powerful clash and is not to be missed. What's more, it's free-to-air in the UK, and you can even tune in for free by using a VPN if you're outside the country today. This year's Six Nations adds a special factor as once the action is over the teams will go on to the Rugby World Cup later in 2019. That means there is plenty of pressure on Scotland and Italy as their performances over the next couple of months will set the trend for the upcoming international competition. The good news for you, dear reader, is that you can watch all the Six Nations rugby action and, a Scotland vs Italy live stream in particular, from anywhere you are in the world using this guide. While Scotland and Italy and expected to sit at the lower end of the table for this tournament, they're still putting forward ever improving and powerful teams that should make this an entertaining match. Scotland are 14/1 to win the Six Nations while Italy has odds at 1000/1. Despite the Scottish team having a huge injury list of 19 players for at least the first two games. Glasgow hookers Fraser Brown and George Turner are both injured. So one of the three uncapped hookers – Edinburgh’s Dave Cherry, Leicester’s Jake Kerr and Glasgow’s Grant Stewart – should be on the touchline to fill Stuart McInally’s boots. While Italy coach Conor O'Shea said: "We’ve won in the last 18 months against Japan and Fiji away and Georgia, but we want to get to the highest level. The level is higher than it was, the highest it has ever been in the Six Nations. But we are better. We have to play at our level of intensity. We want to win, not only for ourselves, but also we want a win for our fans" The game itself is free to air in the UK, so you can tune in to a Scotland vs Italy live stream for free by using a VPN if you're outside the country when it;s on. We've been excited about the 2019 Six Nations international rugby union for ages, and the curtain raiser certainly didn't disappoint. And this year's competition is as important as ever, with the 6 teams making final preparations for the Rugby World Cup later in the year. This guide will let you watch all the action from the comfort of your home, or anywhere else you can get an internet connection for that matter - live stream Six Nations 2019 rugby from anywhere. The impressive Irish are odds-on favourites to take the 2019 Six Nations title and make it two in a row after their Grand Slam last year. Captain Rory Best's men recorded a famous victory over the All Blacks in November and fans and players alike are starting to dare to believe that a World Cup win could be within their grasp. England are in a strange place with their best XV still seemingly undecided by Eddie Jones. They recorded impressive autumn victories against South Africa and Australia and yet looked vulnerable against Japan. The 2019 Six Nations should therefore be a useful litmus test, as it should for Wales who beat the same Southern Hemisphere opposition late last year. Scotland continue to go from strength to strength and they'll be looking to improve on a 2018 campaign that included Calcutta Cup success over England. France and Italy had 2018s to forget and have a lot of improvements to make should they wish to challenge either here or in Japan. For all the info about how to watch a Six Nations live stream, read on. It's free to air in the UK, for example, so you can tune in for free by using a VPN if you're outside the country when the match you want to see is on. And you can scroll down to see a list of this weekend's fixtures, too. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/VgyagGS9HpAEPUQtUJBfrg.jpg http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/B9XNGCRYNHKJzN5zVfTMje.jpg How to live stream Six Nations 2019 in the UK for freeGreat news! Every single Six Nations match will be shown live in the UK on free-to-air television. The coverage is spread across the BBC and ITV, so take a look at our info box to see what channel is showing which individual games. If you're trying to watch online (either live or on catch-up) then you can get access via the BBC iPlayer and ITV Hub websites or mobile apps. It looks like the nasty eavesdropping bug discovered in FaceTime last week is going to get patched up in the coming days. Since the security vulnerability was made public, Apple has disabled Group FaceTime while it sorts out the mess. For those just getting up to speed, the bug allowed users to listen in on handsets they were calling, even if the person at the other end didn't pick up. It worked like this: call someone on FaceTime, add yourself into the group while the call was still being placed, and you're then eavesdropping (via audio, not video) on the handset you called, even if the call isn't accepted. Quite an alarming loophole in the Group FaceTime system and one that has had Apple scrambling to get patched up. In a statement released to 9to5Mac, the company says the feature will be fixed and re-enabled next week. Now you hear me, now you don't"We sincerely apologize to our customers who were affected and all who were concerned about this security issue," Apple said in its statement. "We appreciate everyone's patience as we complete this process." Apple also says it will be "improving the process by which we receive and escalate these reports" in response to criticism from some quarters that it took too long to take the issue seriously. The eavesdropping issue was reportedly first brought to Apple's attention on January 22, with Group FaceTime not disabled until January 28. Whatever the ins and outs of the timeline, it's been an embarrassing few days for Apple and a frustrating few days for FaceTime users. All the parties involved will be hoping to draw a line under the affair in the next few days. Back when the Dell XPS 15 2018 launched, it was packed to the brim with 8th-generation H-series processors, fast SSDs and some gorgeous displays. And, it is still one of the best laptops in 2019. But, now that Whiskey Lake is available, and Nvidia’s Turing graphics architecture is powering some of the best gaming laptops, we thought it was the perfect time to concoct a wish list for what we want to see in the Dell XPS 15 2019. No matter what the result is, it’s going to be way faster than the current model. Beyond certain aspects of the Dell XPS 13 2019 that we think will carry over, like the webcam, we don’t know much about the Dell XPS 15 2019 right now. However, we can still do some speculation, crafting a sort-of wishlist of what we want to see in the next XPS 15. So, keep this page bookmarked, and we’ll update it just as soon as we hear anything. Cut to the chase What is it? The 2019 version of the Dell XPS 15 When is it out? Likely Q1 2019 What will it cost? Probably starting around $1,059 (£1,179 AU$1,699) http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/9vAMW2LedQ8aL7biVWpXHc.jpg Dell XPS 15 release date It’s too early to try and point out an exact Dell XPS 15 2019 release date, but instead we’ll look to the past to try to predict the future. Things could shift a little one way or the other, but the next Intel mobile platform is here, so it’s only a matter of time. We’ll probably start to see movement once Intel gets its supply issues under control. Over the last few years, the Dell XPS 15 has had a bit of an uneven release history. While the Dell XPS 15 2018 came out in May of 2018, past XPS 15 models haven’t been totally consistent. In February 2017, we got the Dell XPS 15 2017, but before that, the 2015 model dropped in October. It’s kind of all over the place, and it could mean we have to wait a very long time for the next one. However, we’re sure that if a ton of new hardware comes out, Dell will be close behind with a hardware refresh for the Dell XPS 15. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/orunjpbNggbcZFq3Gyuz6c.jpg Dell XPS 15 price The current XPS 15 starts out at $1,059 (£1,179, AU$1,699) for a quad-core, 8th-generation Intel Core i5 chip, 8GB of RAM and a 1TB 5,400 RPM hard drive. However, you can spec it out for up to $2,959 (£2,279, AU$3,999) for a Core i9, 32GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD. Dell will probably follow the same pricing trend as the current model for the XPS 15 2019 – bring out an entry-level notebook for about $1,050 and let users configure it however they want. However, we could see Dell raising the price a bit for the entry model, as it has for the last few years – plus, computer hardware keeps getting more expensive. Again, we won’t know what the pricing is going to be until we get closer to launch, so stay tuned. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/8Mdpfhdua4rMHPhBuZ9L9c.jpg What want to see from Dell XPS 15 2019 The Dell XPS 15 is already one of the best Ultrabooks you can buy today, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have room to improve. So, we went ahead and created a wishlist of things we want to see from the Dell XPS 15 2019, to really elevate it into the laptop stratosphere. Better cooling The biggest drawback that the Dell XPS 15 has faced for the last few years is the thermal limitations introduced from its increasingly thinner designs. Don’t get us wrong, we love having such a portable notebook with this much horsepower behind it, but if you’re doing a lot of video editing or other workstation-class tasks, the Dell XPS 15 2018 likely won’t last very long. Because the Dell XPS 15 is a high-end device, we’d love to see a cooling design that, well, keeps it cool. If it comes at the cost of keeping the same thinness as this years model, or even thickening it up a bit, we could live with that – it’s already easy to carry around, we just don’t want to thermal throttle anymore. More ports For a 15-inch laptop, the 2018 Dell XPS 15 is a little light on port selection. It’s more robust than the MacBook Pro, as it actually features USB Type-A and an SD card reader. But, for a laptop with this spec and size, we’d love to see some Ethernet and maybe even a DisplayPort. We know, we’re entering the age of the dongle – we would just like to see a bit more flexibility out of such a premium device. Move that webcam At this point, it kind of feels like we’re beating a dead horse, but that webcam has got to move. Nobody who uses their webcam on a regular basis for video conferencing, or even the occasional hangout with friends, is going to appreciate a webcam that perpetually gazes up their noses. It’s not an ideal situation for either end of the conversation, and it even makes Windows Hello kind of a pain. Luckily, it looks like Dell may have figured it out – the new Dell XPS 13 has moved the chin-cam up into the top bezel thanks to some kind of shrinking magic. Hopefully, this tiny little camera finds its way into the Dell XPS 15 2019. Unlimited power We know that we just talked about Dell’s thermal solution, but we still want more power. This might be hypocritical, but with Whiskey Lake, Coffee Lake Refresh available today – not to mention the upcoming 10nm Ice Lake for laptops – we’re hungry for stronger performance. If there’s a way that Dell can find a middle ground – include a beefier processor while creating a more robust cooling solution, we’d be very happy. That’s not to mention graphics. Nvidia just launched its GeForce RTX lineup for laptops at CES 2019, which should improve graphics performance drastically. However, the Dell XPS 15 2019 featured a GTX 1050 Ti, and we still don’t have an equivalent Turing GPU. We might just have to wait until Nvidia fleshes out the low-end of its Turing lineup. Check out our list of the best Ultrabooks. http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/joKeuKMWC50

Playing the best PC games online means that you’ve likely run into a ton of lag at some point, but what if we told you that the best gaming routers could make sure your online gaming is never interrupted? It’s true – the best routers for gaming will prioritize gaming network traffic, thanks to a handy little trick called Quality of Service (or QoS), so your gaming won’t be interrupted by someone on an hours-long Netflix binge. You’ll also want to keep an eye out for MU-MIMO Multiple user, Multi Input, Multi Output), so that everyone on your network can get their game on without having to get in each other's way. When you’re playing games online, a wired connection is typically considered the best way to go about it, and we’d have to concur. So, the best gaming routers will have a ton of Ethernet ports. Chromebooks have been out for a while now, and they’re generally accepted for being great devices for high school students and kids. But, when they first hit the market, no one knew what to make of even the top Chromebooks. That has definitely changed, though – not only are there more than 25 million Chrome OS users, but the best Chromebooks continue some of the best battery life in the game – something that Windows 10 is still catching up on. But, what is a Google Chromebook? Well, they won’t just feature fantastic battery life, but they’re also extremely affordable. This is because Chromebooks don’t really need all the latest and greatest hardware – because they only run Chrome, they pack just the essential hardware. And, with devices like the Google Pixel Slate, the top Chromebooks are getting more advanced every day. And, because you are restrained by your web browser and Android apps, some users may be wary of picking up one of the best Chromebooks, and we totally get it. But, if your computer use just boils down to word processing and email, with very little video editing or gaming, you can’t go wrong with one of the best Chromebooks. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/EwRQ9mGywVmn9A7UcJQTS8.jpg Shortly after proclaiming the Chromebook Pixel as dead, Google revived it in a way nobody expected. Now, it’s the Google Pixelbook and it stands completely independent of its predecessor. That’s because, unlike the Chromebook Pixel, it can run Android apps natively, on top of building upon Chrome OS. And, when you add in the huge amount of storage space, fantastic stylus and Google Assistant, it shouldn’t surprise you when we say the Pixelbook is the best Chromebook 2018 has to offer – even so long after its launch. Rocking a full-fat Intel Core processor and full-HD display, the Chromebook Flip changed everything. With this Chromebook, all the features we take for granted came to life. Put simply, if you want the key features that the Pixelbook offers, but you don’t want to drop that much cash the Asus Chromebook Flip is a fantastic option. It’s more than just a pretty chassis, though – the Acer Chromebook Spin 13 is backed by full-fat Ultrabook processors, so it can get work done, and look good while doing it. Reinforced by a 180-degree hinge, sturdy design and a sealed keyboard and trackpad in addition to a punchy typing experience, this Chromebook is a perfectly portable package. Not only adequately suited for school and work, the Dell Chromebook 11 even packs a set of loud stereo speakers for listening to music or watching videos. Don’t worry about dinging it, either, as this device remains the most rugged Chromebook on our list. If you’re a student, or even a parent of a student that’s looking for a cheap, capable and, more importantly, durable machine to get some homework done on the go, you shouldn’t need to look further than the Acer Chromebook Spin 11. You won’t be able to do any hardcore gaming or video editing on this thing, but if you just need something to write some papers and watch some YouTube in your downtime – you should give it a look. Read the full review: Acer Chromebook Spin 11 http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/EpfRQms7YaUSKTQTYtRFUG.jpg With a pristine build quality that rivals a MacBook, it’s easy to forgive the Acer Chromebook 15’s aversion to 2-in-1 form factors. However, given that most Chromebooks releasing this year are fully convertible, thanks to the wide adoption of Android app support, the Acer Chromebook 15 had to prove itself to us with more than good style. And, beyond its ability to lay flat using a 180-degree hinge, this beautiful 15-inch Chromebook makes a great impression with its battery life, too, lasting nearly 17 hours in our battery test. It isn’t the most powerful option out there, but it still gives you full access to Android Apps on the Google Play store. What’s more, it does so on a touchscreen display that can be rotated around into tablet mode, complemented by an all-metal finish that you won’t be ashamed of. While it’s similar to the Acer Chromebook 15 in a lot of ways, this 14-inch Chromebook is a bit more compact and even looks better. Complemented by a bright blue finish and a screen made to astonish, the HP Chromebook 14 boasts the best value of any Chromebook out there. Even if the battery life and performance are average – the HP Chromebook 14 is easily one of the best Chromebooks on the market right now. You’re getting a 1440p display, two USB-C ports and, if you’re willing to shell out a bit more cash, you can get yourself an INtel Core M processor rather than a Pentium. All of this is complemented by incredible style and a metallic design that exudes Pixel influence. It might not be as powerful as the Google Pixelbook, but it’s still one of the best Chromebooks when it comes to sheer style. In 2015, Sony acquired the Belgian company SoftKinetic, a firm boasting Kinect-style depth-sensing, including tracking light via Time of Flight (ToF). SoftKinetic’s ToF tech ‘DepthSense’ just re-emerged in a video Sony just uploaded, which shows depth-sensing coming to the gadget giant’s line of smartphones. The video (embedded below) shows folks looking through a nondescript phone’s display to see how DepthSense can liven up their lives: 3D neon writing and drawing suspended in the air, a game where players use their finger-guns to shoot at enemies, seeing a shopping item displayed in real space, and so on. Days ago, a leaked photo hinted that the upcoming Sony Xperia XZ4 could pack a 0.3MP ToF camera – so this new DepthSense showcase on a generic (i.e. probably not the XZ4) phone is likely not a coincidence, GSMArena pointed out. In any case, this is tech that could end up in any phone, given how many OEMs install Samsung cameras on their devices. And while we've seen AR effects demonstrated at phone launches before – Apple and Huawei come to mind – Sony is showing off another level of functionality and applications. Instead of sticking cute animated animals alongside people on stage, Sony's tech enables interactive annotation in the AR-space with a phone-based camera setup. Why Time of Flight?Time of Flight is a method of sensing depth using a 2D camera, essentially by tracking the time it takes for light to rebound off surfaces and reach the camera. It’s a scrappy way to determine where objects are in relation to each other – say, for AR games and experiences – without requiring extensive cameras or sensors. Rumors have suggested Apple is lining up to buy Sony’s 3D-sensing tech, which could end up in this year’s iPhone 11. Another leak suggests only a triple-camera setup is coming in 2019’s iPhone crop, but no 3D sensing until the following model in 2020, which might use lasers to sense depth. 3D sensing could be a good feather in any smartphone’s cap – especially since this year’s other phone innovations, like a notch-avoiding punch hole and unfinished folding tech, aren’t terribly exciting. The smartphone market needs novel new ideas: lack of device innovation was a factor that made 2018 the first full year that global smartphone shipments declined. We might have depth-sensing phones yet, but here's a list of the best camera phones aroundhttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/6tjP61MaJ0E
