The Australian Tax Office employed Alex in September last year, and since then she’s done 24-hour shifts and answered thousands of customer queries. But the ATO’s most-productive employee isn’t a real person — she’s an AI-powered virtual assistant and now she’s getting a voice, just like Siri and Cortana. The ATO has recently teamed up with Nuance Communications to implement the US software giant’s own virtual assistant tech into the government organisation’s website, which will enable existing-assistant Alex to vocally address customer queries. The new voice enhancements will be launched today, and are seen as the next step in the tax organisation’s bid to improve online customer service by enabling customers to self-serve. Since starting work at the ATO last year, Alex has had more than 950,000 conversations, most of them during the July through to October period, when most Australians are scrambling to submit their tax returns. And she will continue to evolve as more people interact with her on a daily basis, using advanced resolution technologies and an understanding of language and dialogue. Robert Schwarz, managing director for Nuance Enterprise, Australia and New Zealand, said the company was “thrilled to provide the ATO with the next phase of intelligent automation technology”. He also listed out the pros of using this technology, adding, “Once it is taught something, it never forgets, it’s always polite and it’s available 24/7. And because we capture the essence of the conversation in text format, the ATO can analyse the information at a more granular level.” Nuance is perhaps best-known for the Swype software keyboard on iOS and Android, as well as the Dragon NaturallySpeaking dictation software. It also provides the ATO with biometric technology for its call centre and mobile application. Why you need CCleanerhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/Z3NPEW36KgeQUzUqXReN6.png The premise of CCleaner is simple: improve your PC's performance by deleting unnecessary files (including temporary files, cookies and the contents of your Recycle Bin) and protect your privacy by wiping your web browser's search history and recently typed URLs, and eliminating tracking cookies that report your online activities back to advertisers. In theory that could all be done using Windows' own optimization tools, the Task Manager and your browser settings, but that would take time that many of us simply don't have to spare. CCleaner's clear, well designed interface makes it incredibly simple to keep on top of the housekeeping it's easy to ignore (even though you know you shouldn't). Each element is explained clearly and you can deselect anything you don't want to be cleaned up so you don't accidentally remove anything that you might later need. For example, CCleaner can erase usernames and passwords saved by your web browser, but only if you explicitly tell it to. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/4e4ce7f36cea8d4c0559842b643337fa.jpg CCleaner scans your PC's hard drive for files that can be safely deleted to free up valuable spaceCCleaner versionsThere are four versions of the CCleaner desktop software: FreeProfessional - £19.95, US$24.95, AU$29.95Professional Plus - currently discounted to £29.95, US$39.95, AU$39.95Business - £29.95, US$39.95, AU$35.94All four will clear your PC of clutter for a speed boost and improved privacy, but the Professional version also includes real-time monitoring, scheduled cleaning, automatic updates and premium support. If you spend a little more on Professional Plus, you not only get CCleaner, but also superb file-recovery tool Recuva, disk defragging software Defraggler and system information program Speccy. CCleaner Cloud puts all the features of the desktop software in your browser, and once you've installed the client software, you can use it to clean up multiple PCs remotely. It's available in three versions, depending on your requirements: FreeProfessional - US$5 (about £3.41, AU$6.69) per month or US$50 (about £34.14, AU$66.88) per yearBusiness - US$2 (about £1.36, AU$2.68) per endpoint per month. All versions are free from spyware and adware. CCleaner FreeYou'll be keen to dive in and begin optimizing your PC straight away, but before analyzing you drives it's a good idea to take a look at CCleaner's settings. Some of these are only accessible to Pro users, but others (such as 'Only delete files in the Recycle Bin older than 24 hours' and any specific cookies you'd like to keep) are worth looking at before you begin your first scan. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/ca94cf452699de1a61d4970e40f19265.jpg CCleaner will alert you if you select any files that might cause problems if they're deletedThe main CCleaner screen contains two tabs - Windows and Applications - displaying all the temporary files and other potentially unwanted clutter it can remove from your system. You'll notice that some options are unchecked by default; these are ones you might want to keep for the sake of convenience, and CCleaner will let you know the risks if you select any particularly significant ones so you can make an informed decision. When you've made your choices, click 'Analyze' and CCleaner will scan your system to see how much drive space you could save by clearing those items. This scan may take a couple of minutes depending on how cluttered your drives are. Once it's finished its scan, CCleaner will show you what it's found. If you're happy to go ahead and delete those files, click 'Run cleaner' and the program will do its work. If it's removed a significant amount of junk, you should see a noticeable improvement in speed. Our review PC (formerly a mess of temporary files and cookies) definitely felt less sluggish after CCleaner swept away over 2.4GB of clutter.. After it's deleted temporary files, CCleaner can take a look at your Windows Registry. This is a database that stores information about the operating system itself and your installed programs. Over time, it can become populated by unused entries, broken links and missing data, all of which can affect your PC's performance. To give it a spring clean, select 'Registry', take a look at which CCleaner is going to scan for, and click 'Scan for Issues'. If you're happy to let CCleaner correct the problems it's found, click 'Fix selected issues'. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/e5a0a7eac58b9601423337c113e0904d.jpg CCleaner can scan your Windows Registry for broken links and missing dataYou'll be prompted to make a backup before proceeding, which is a very good idea - the Registry is a fundamental part of your operating system, and there's a chance (albeit small) that cleaning it up could cause damage. CCleaner will then begin running through each issue it's found, explaining why it's been flagged up and giving you the option to fix it, skip it, or go ahead and fix everything. Once that's done, the Tools option lets you uninstall programs, and decide which launch automatically when Windows starts. Stopping non-essential programs starting themselves can dramatically improve your PC's boot times, so it's definitely worth checking out your options here, but take care not to disable anything important. It sounds obvious, but if you're not sure what a program does, Google it first. CCleaner can also check for plug-ins in all of your browsers, and analyze your drives to see what type of files are taking up the most room. If most of your space is occupied by photos. For example, you might choose to shift them to an external drive. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/48c534f4e711c08706ba49fa8067c135.jpg The Duplicate Finder is self-explanatory, and System Restore lets you choose to delete older saved recovery points. You can't delete the most recent Restore Point, but be careful with this option; older Restore Points can be very useful if something goes wrong with your PC's software and you need to turn back the clock. The final tool is Drive Wiper. You're unlikely to need this, but if you want to make sure nothing can recover your deleted data, it's the tool for you. When a file is deleted, it isn't immediately removed; instead, the space it occupied on your drive is marked as available to be overwritten. That's how file recovery programs like Recuva are able to dig out files that have been emptied out of the Recycle Bin. The Drive Wiper will write over all the 'available' space on your drive with other data (up to 35 times), making it nigh-on impossible for anything to be recovered. Be extremely careful with this option. If you're selling your PC, you might choose to wipe an entire drive this way to avoid leaving sensitive information behind (not the one containing your operating system, naturally). How often you run CCleaner is a matter of personal choice; its settings give you the option to run it every time your PC starts, but you may prefer to run it manually from time to time instead for faster boot times. The free edition of CCleaner doesn't include automatic updates, so it's worth clicking 'Check for updates' in the bottom right periodically. CCleaner ProfessionalThe Professional version of CCleaner includes all the features of the free edition, with the added ability to schedule scans on a daily, weekly or monthly basis - whatever is most convenient for you. You can also ask CCleaner to update itself automatically when new bug fixes or features are added, and do so silently in the background to avoid disturbing you. Both of these settings can be found under the 'Options' tab. When you buy CCleaner Professional, you'll be sent an email with instructions explaining how to log in to Piriform's website for Priority Support. This lets you send a ticket directly to the support team, who will aim to answer it within four hours during their working day. Users of CCleaner Free can still find support in Piriform's knowledge base of commonly asked questions and submit requests for help. Professional users will be given priority, but it's still very rare for a free program to offer such comprehensive support. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/51b004cf1e8a4b8df9141e72ab2fd204.jpg CCleaner Professional includes priority support, automatic updates and scheduled scansCCleaner CloudIn addition to the desktop versions, CCleaner is also available as a cloud-based web app for cleaning up all of your PCs remotely. After signing up online you'll be prompted to download the installer. Once that's done, your PC will be connected to your account and you can log in using your email address. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/41860971e6ed7989f371597c97ecc225.jpg You can connect up to three PCs using the free version of CCleaner CloudFurther PCs can be connected the same way - visit the CCleaner Cloud website, select 'Log in' and download the software. They will all be connected by your master account, and you can use any one to scan and optimise the others remotely (provided they're all turned on and have the client software installed - more on that in a moment). The free version is limited to three devices, whereas the Professional edition covers your whole household. The Professional version also gives you two-factor authentication for extra security, access to a year's event history (compared to the free version's two months) and no event limit. Once you've added a device, CCleaner Cloud will show its specifications, as well as its resource usage including bandwidth, memory and CPU. Click any of these to see more information about the programs and processes running, and their resource use. The CCleaner tab offers all the features you've come to expect from the desktop program to clean and speed up your PC. Simply select the areas to check from the list on the left, then click 'Analyze'. Once it's done its work, you'll be shown how much space you can clean up, and a button to do just that. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/584607bd01c3de1b338c4dc662443642.jpg CCleaner Cloud will scan your PC for files that can be deleted to free up space, just like the desktop software, and can be run remotely from another PC you ownOne particularly interesting feature is the ability to install software; if you've downloaded any software installers, but not used them, CCleaner Cloud gives you the option to do so without having to hunt the installer down yourself (it's probably hidden in the depths of your Downloads folder). The cloud edition of CCleaner also includes a cloud version of Piriform's Defraggler for defragmenting your hard drives remotely. It works in much the same way as Windows' built-in Defrag tool, but with the added ability to defrag empty space to help prevent fragmentation in future, and select certain areas to be scanned. ConclusionCCleaner is superb - a quick and easy way to keep on top of the regular housekeeping tasks we know we should be doing to keep our PCs running smoothly and protect our privacy, but don't always make time for. The free download offers pretty much everything you need to keep your PC free of clutter, but the extra convenience of the Professional edition's automatic updates and scheduled scans may win you over. The best free firewallIn the 1990s, Microsoft had a problem: Windows seemed to suffer from endless security problems that hackers and other online villains were quick to exploit. One way to fight back was to install a firewall - an app that blocked malicious and/or unwanted network traffic and that could ensure that dodgy software couldn't sneak onto your PC. Microsoft began building its own firewall into Windows and that's still the case today, but attacks still happen and additional software can make your system even more secure. These are the firewall apps we think you should consider using no matter which version of Windows you're running. If we've missed your favorite free firewall - whether it's a standalone program or built into a full online security suite - let us know in the comments below. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/684e36528eca45e1971880b3630342db.jpg http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/1c5dd6cecb3d4d815765f254814c9b23.jpg ZoneAlarm Free Firewall manages both incoming and outgoing traffic, and lets you decide which programs are granted access1. ZoneAlarm Free Firewall 2016A free firewall with real-time protection and special features for wireless connections For many of us, ZoneAlarm was the app that introduced us to firewalls in the first place, and it was a must-have app in the days when Windows effectively told the internet "Hack me! I'm easy!" The current version hides open ports, identifies potentially dodgy traffic, disables malicious programs and connects to DefenseNet, which provides real-time security updates as new threats are detected. It also protects your computer on public Wi-Fi networks. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/7gaReKkHGknFTR36uCQpEH.png The only downside is that it doesn't play nice with anti-malware software other than Windows Defender, and warns of potential stability and performance problems if you don't uninstall other anti-malware software. If that isn't an issue for you, ZoneAlarm is the most effective and convenient free firewall you can download. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/684e36528eca45e1971880b3630342db.jpg http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/5644dc4df1cab4a6e4cafa5a8ecb8d6d.jpg Comodo Firewall is a reliable option for protecting your connection, with a well-maintained database of current threats2. Comodo FirewallBlocks over two million known threats, with more added every day If you don't like firewalls with lots of pop-up notifications then Comodo Firewall probably isn't for you: it's one of the more vocal free firewall apps we tested, but that's because it's also one of the most comprehensive. It runs on Windows 7 or later, monitors your network, system and apps, and it has a blocklist of more than two million bad apps that it won't let anywhere near your PC. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/7gaReKkHGknFTR36uCQpEH.png It also connects to a cloud-based system that's updated instantly as new threats arrive, and that offers a whitelist of reputable files and vendors too. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/684e36528eca45e1971880b3630342db.jpg http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/8344c0cd88b910456adf9c61d9d68d8d.jpg PeerBlock lets you blacklist specific categories, including known providers of adware and sites with an anti-filesharing agenda3. PeerBlockProtection designed specifically for regular filesharers Many free firewalls use multiple forms of protection, but PeerBlock is designed to protect just one kind of problem: traffic from IP addresses that you don't trust. That narrow focus means it does its one job very well without requiring much in the way of system resources or intervention from you. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/7gaReKkHGknFTR36uCQpEH.png When you install it it asks you to choose the kind of websites you want to block - such as adware networks, spyware, known villains and organizations such as anti-P2P groups - and it automatically updates its block lists every day to keep those IP addresses away from your PC. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/684e36528eca45e1971880b3630342db.jpg http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/400694023e080c2a90de75b131cbbd38.jpg TinyWall isn't a full firewall - it's an extension for the built-in Windows firewall that lets you manage whitelists and prevents annoying pop-ups appearing while you're working4. TinyWallPrefer to use Windows' own firewall? TinyWall will give you full control TinyWall is better known for what it doesn't do than what it does: unlike some free firewalls it doesn't interrupt you with pop-up warnings about what seems to be every second bit of data. It's designed to improve Windows' own firewall features without requiring any expert knowledge, and while it offers the same whitelisting features as other packages - to ensure that the apps you use can get online without any difficulty - it does it through hotkeys or lists rather than pop-ups. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/7gaReKkHGknFTR36uCQpEH.png TinyWall only takes up about 1MB on your hard drive, and is a very useful addition if you decide to stick with Windows' built-in security tool. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/684e36528eca45e1971880b3630342db.jpg http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/6572ee8b10e1a907da7405592ac55fe6.jpg OpenDNS include preset options to block most attacks, and you can configure them with additional settings like family protection to keep your kids safe online5. OpenDNSCustomizable filters to protect your most personal data at router level OpenDNS isn't a downloadable free firewall; it's a change you can make to your router's settings so it connects to the internet via OpenDNS's servers. That means the protection applies to any device on your network, which is useful in today's hyper-connected homes and businesses. OpenDNS Home automatically blocks known offenders and offers a range of content filtering options to keep the kids away from filth too. The service is free, and there are full set-up instructions for every kind of device. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/684e36528eca45e1971880b3630342db.jpg http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/a77cfddf2f0e4fda9bbb15bbad7d76a6.jpg It's best to avoid public Wi-Fi networks where possible, but if you have to use one, Anti NetCut3 can help you avoid attempts to compromise your connection6. Anti NetCut3A firewall designed to secure your connection on risky public networks If you've ever wondered "who spoof my connection", Anti NetCut3 has the answer. Ropey interface translations aside, this free firewall is designed to block attempts to cut or manipulate your internet connection when you're using potentially compromised networks such as public Wi-Fi hotspots, which are relatively easy to mess with. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/7gaReKkHGknFTR36uCQpEH.png All you need to do is specify the network adapter it should be monitoring - your wireless adapter or your ethernet adapter if you're connecting to a wired network - and it'll take care of the rest. http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/EHHg7xxqtMQ

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/Z3NPEW36KgeQUzUqXReN6.png Free StudioFree Studio describes itself as the world’s number one freeware suite. We suspect Google Docs and OpenOffice might have something to say about that, but it’s certainly a useful tool for downloading videos from YouTube. Before we proceed, remember you should only download videos when you have the copyright holder's permission. Unauthorized downloading is against YouTube's terms of service. Free Studio is simple, with four key sections. The main one, Download, enables you do specify the YouTube clip you want to use and how you want to download it - as an MP4 video or as an audio-only MP3 track. That’s handy enough, but it’s the next button that makes Free Studio really useful: it’s the Convert section, which enables you to convert the video or audio files into other formats for use on devices such as tablets and smartphones. Why you need itFree Studio isn’t just for YouTube. It works with Instagram, Dailymotion, Niconico and Coub, and promises to record audio and video from Skype too. You can also use it to upload to YouTube and to Facebook, which is useful if you want to share music you’ve made or a gaming playthrough you’ve created. The developer is completely up front about how it makes money: the app is free to use and there's no spyware to worry about, but it does bundle links to other websites, app installations and toolbars in the installer. Be careful what you click or don’t click if that’s an issue for you. Download here: Free Studio http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/ylR3aZNSNdQ

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/Z3NPEW36KgeQUzUqXReN6.png Cameyo PlayerThe holidays are an expensive time, so we’re bringing you a special treat: a full, free, fun Windows program to download every day until Christmas. Take a look behind the sixth door on our downloads advent calendar and you'll find Cameyo Player - a fantastic free tool that can turn any Windows software into a portable app that you can store online, or on a USB stick. Best of all, you can upload your portable app to Cameyo's own web servers and run it on a virtual PC in any web browser. Your software, anywhereTo get started, register for a Cameyo account, then download the software that you want to make portable but don't install it yet. In the free version of Cameyo, the total size of the installed program must be less than 50MB. Next, download and run Cameyo. It will begin by taking a snapshot of your system. This won't take long - don't do anything else while it's happening. Once it's finished, install your chosen software as normal. If you're prompted to restart your PC, go ahead and do that. Click 'Install done' and Cameyo Player will take another snapshot of your system to see which files and folders have changed, then package this information into a file, which it saves in your Documents folder. Reopen your web browser and go to your Cameyo account, then click 'Add app' followed by 'Upload your existing Cameyo package'. Select the file from the new Cameyo directory in your Documents folder and upload it. This might take a little while, so be patient. Once it's done, you can use your program any time by logging into Cameyo and clicking 'My apps'. Easy! http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/Z3NPEW36KgeQUzUqXReN6.png Some of us are old enough to remember the days when even an average image editing app cost the same as a second-hand car. Those days are long gone, and it’s possible to get a very good image editor for a price tag of exactly zero. Say hello to Fotor. Why you need itIn exchange for the odd not-too-annoying ad, Fotor offers a good range of image tools. You can apply special effects and add frames and borders, improve the appearance of photos and even get the kind of tilt-shift blurry effects that you’d normally need an expensive camera to achieve. The emphasis here is on fast results, so for example Fotor has 13 different one-tap scenes that you can use to completely change the appearance of your images. Overly dark scenes are brightened, overly exposed ones are dimmed and colours really punch. Fotor is free because its creators really want you to buy Fotor Pro, which removes the ads and adds some new features including more editing and full HDR support for really dramatic images. But the free version is pretty feature-packed in its own right, so hurrah for that. Download here: Fotor http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/WGO6kqv-oXw

Peek behind the fourth door of our downloads advent calendar and you'll find VLC 360 - the first fully-featured media player to support 360-degree photos and videos natively, with no additional plugins. A new perspectiveYouTube and Facebook both support 360-degree media, which lets you interact by looking around to see the scene from a different perspective. The mainstream media players are beginning to catch up, but until now you could only put yourself at the centre of the action if you spent time downloading and installing extensions. Thanks to VLC 360, that hassle is a thing of the past. This edition of the market-leading free media player supports immersive photos and video from the moment you start it. You don't need to keep two media apps installed - VLC 360 can easily replace your existing media player thanks to its excellent customization options and ability to play almost any video or audio file you can throw its way. You can even use it to stream internet radio, podcasts and TV. If you want some 360-degree videos to try, Kolor and GoPro have some great examples. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/Z3NPEW36KgeQUzUqXReN6.png If you’re still sticking with Windows’ default media player for your music, we think you might like MusicBee instead. It aims to be the ultimate music player and organizer, and it’s packed with goodies including a completely customisable interface, audio upmixing to surround sound, automatic track tagging and support for a huge collection of plugins (including many WinAmp ones, which is great news for digital music fans of a certain vintage). Why you need itWindows’ own music app is OK, but it doesn’t have even a fraction of the features MusicBee delivers. It supports playlists and podcasts, mobile devices including Android phones, Groove Music (the service formerly known as Xbox Music), Last.fm integration, CD ripping - you get the idea. Despite all of this it doesn’t suffer from software bloat like certain other music programs rhyming with 'buytunes'; even running a whole bunch of skins and add-ons, MusicBee usually keeps itself under 70MB of memory, usually a whole lot less. It’s rare to find a program so welcoming for beginners and so powerful for power users, but MusicBee is that rare thing. It’s free, but the developer will happily accept donations from grateful music fans. Download here: MusicBee http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/gE_B6S9Rslw

There's no better time to pick out a brand-new gaming TV. The launch of the Xbox One S and PlayStation 4 Pro – not to mention Microsoft's Project Scorpio a year or so down the line – means console gaming is no longer just a full HD, standard dynamic range experience. Forward-thinking gamers also now need to consider 4K/Ultra HD and high dynamic range for their next TVs. These new considerations, of course, come on top of the more traditional gaming TV issues of low input lag (the time it takes for a TV to render its images), good motion clarity, strong contrast (so you can't be easily ambushed by aliens and psychos hiding in dark corners) and bold colour handling. In fact, picking a TV that's perfect for gaming is arguably more complicated than picking one for just watching movies and TV. Don't worry, though: martyrs that we are, we've spent countless hours gaming on a huge range of 2016 TVs to come up with the following list of 10 that we reckon are particularly well suited to taking your favourite waste of time to a whole new level of fun. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/adcee0879e8f4e855ea822f3828f32ea.jpg Whether by accident or design, Samsung seems to have hit upon a near-perfect gaming-friendly formula with the KS7500 range. For starters, they're curved. This isn't always a great thing from a pure TV-viewing perspective, but with gamers often sitting closer to their screens, and alone, the curve can actually enhance the sense of immersion in what you're playing. (Note that if you really don't like the curve, you can get a flat version of this TV too: the KS7000 range – check out our review of the Samsung UE55KS7000.) Its input lag – so long as you select its Game mode – is one of the lowest we've ever tested at 22ms, meanwhile, making it hard to blame this TV for any in-game deaths. Sealing the deal is the fact that it can do a remarkably good job of delivering the twin joys of native Ultra HD resolution and HDR for what is, all things considered, an extremely attractive price. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/c6a735272028ad6ec54c4aef603120d3.jpg The way every single pixel in OLED screens like the OLEDC6 series can produce its own light and colour (unlike LCD) has a stunning impact on the way games look. Dark games/sequences, in particular, take on a whole new dimension thanks to the way the screen can deliver black colours that look, well, black. Their ability to show incredible amounts of subtle shadow detail in dark areas also has a more practical benefit – there's less chance of you being ambushed by things luking in the darkness. The OLEDC6's amazing black level performance also means game colours pretty much explode off the screen, and its 30ms of input lag in its Game mode is also a strong result for a 4K TV. It does HDR and 4K too, and its curved screen aids immersion if you're sat close to it (though a flat alternative, the OLEDB6 range, also works well). The OLEDC6 series offers all this, moreover, for a surprisingly attractive price. Read the full review: LG OLED55C6V http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/af9c60b980b5eb03556d7bb5aaa2d97b.jpg Although the full HD W805/W809 TVs were part of Sony's 2015 range, they proved so damn good that they're still being sold today – which is great news for gamers who aren't bothered about prepping for gaming's 4K future, as their picture quality thrills will transform your gaming experience. For starters, no other HD TV we've seen delivers better contrast, making them perfect partners for the often extreme use of light and dark you find in many video games. Sony has also equipped these TVs with its Triluminos technology, which helps to create colour saturations and subtleties that do full justice to today's game graphics – or else mercilessly exposes games whose graphics really aren't up to the job. Add sharpness that seems halfway to 4K at times, and barely 20ms of input lag – an exceptional result for a TV – and this is simply as good as HD gaming gets. Read the full review: Sony KDL-55W805C http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/501090579d8a9cb8125bf72519d7b1f7.jpg Many games – but especially FPS and racing games – take on a whole new dimension of immersion and excitement when played at near life-sized proportions. Projectors offer the cheapest route to such big-screen experiences, but are seldom convenient solutions for the home. Which is where Sony's immense 75-inch 75XD9405 comes in. This 4K-resolution, HDR-toting monster of a TV recreates your gaming worlds with so much sharpness, colour vibrancy, detail and contrast that you feel like you've actually stepped inside the game. It also measured only around 30ms of input lag during our tests, which means it never forces you to suffer that 'running through treacle' feeling you get with TVs that struggle to render their images quickly. Occasionally some very high-contrast scenes can exhibit light blooming around bright objects which can momentarily reduce the immersive sensation, but overall the 75XD9405 is the one TV here that takes your gaming to the movies. Read the full review: Sony KD-75XD9405 http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/46fc4c5aedb34f0872d92f400ee150d8.jpg If you're got a fairly small living room, or want a decent-sized gaming screen for a study or bedroom, the 40-inch Panasonic 40DX600 is an excellent – and affordable by 4K TV standards – option. It produces crisp, colourful pictures with more contrast and motion clarity than is common at this level of the market, and it renders its pictures in a very respectable 30ms in its Gaming mode. There's more colour detail than you'd get with a non-4K TV too, which helps give gaming worlds a more three-dimensional feel. From a normal TV viewing distance its relatively small screen doesn't really show off its 4K resolution perhaps, but from a more up-close gaming perspective those pixels do make a difference. A very limited effective viewing angle perhaps limits the 40DX600's potential as a shared screen for co-op gaming, but for one-man armies it does the job superbly for the money. Avoid the larger screen DX600 sizes, however, as they use different types of LCD panel that deliver poor contrast. Read the full review: Panasonic TX-40DX600B http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/87ad541fc9531dc028b0b46d9632462d.jpg As you'd expect given their starting price of £3,800, Samsung's KS9500 series are fearsomely cutting-edge TVs. In particular, their maximum brightness output of 1400 nits is way higher than any other TV has managed before, enabling them to present HDR pictures with an accuracy and intensity that takes your breath away. They also use modified Quantum Dot colour technology to produce a huge range of colours which, when combined with all that brightness, look more intense than any we've seen before. The prospect of HDR gaming on these TVs is simply mouthwatering. They also deliver arguably the sharpest 4K pictures in the world, while their curved screens can enhance your immersion in a game if you're sitting reasonably close. Finally, their input lag is just 25ms, which is outstandingly low for such sophisticated TVs. Just bear in mind that it's arguably only worth investing in these TVs if you intend to go all-out to feed them with the 'next-gen' gaming sources they deserve. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/4ef6d19bb15da7b77cb760344d292877.jpg Samsung's top HD TVs for 2016 may lack the 4K and HDR skills of Samsung's other two entries on this list, but that doesn't stop them from being mighty fine partners for original Xbox Ones and PS4s. For starters, they benefit from Samsung's uncanny knack of delivering excellent contrast and colour right across its TV range, creating gaming worlds that feel solid and involving. Their pictures are also sharp and clean for HD TVs, while they hit the 30ms input lag target we generally look for when thinking about TVs from a gaming perspective. Motion looks unusually clean for such affordable TVs too, even on the 32-inch model, keeping the action crisp even as you spin frantically left and right in search of the next enemy. One last point about the K5600 series is that it covers an unusually wide range of sizes, meaning there's a model to suit pretty much every room and requirement. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/3f2dfa4cc8b9294f600a7dc6b9ad62b4.jpg The 65PUS7601 boasts arguably the single most aggressively game-friendly feature on this list, in the shape of its Ambilight system. Ambilight uses LED lights ranged along the TV's rear left, right and top edges to throw out coloured lights that can be continually matched in terms of shade, intensity and even location to the colours in the picture you're watching; the result is greatly enhanced connection with what you're watching, something that's especially useful where gaming is concerned. The Ambilight system even features a dedicated gaming mode, designed to react faster than normal to changes in your game graphics. The 65PUS7601 also provides generally strong (for its reasonably low price) 4K and HDR picture quality, and you can get input lag down to only around 30ms if you're careful how you set it up. The set even features a dedicated HDR game mode that adjusts the HDR processing to suit the relatively stark and precise look of game graphics versus 'natural' video. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/5c882bc0f067106a25e77e6eba85c63d.jpg The only reason the OLEDE6 series doesn't feature more highly on this list is its £3,500 starting price, which leaves the cheaper OLEDC6 range looking much more viable for most households (or the B6 series if you prefer a flat screen). The OLEDE6 series does, however, justify its extra cost if you can find enough cash. For starters, its design is something else, thanks to the way its OLED film is mounted directly onto a sheet of glass. It also backs up its predictably stunning, contrast-rich pictures with a much more potent, atmosphere-building sound performance than the C6 series, courtesy of a powerful, expressive and detailed soundbar that sits beneath its bottom edge. Finally its pictures – which deliver not just 4K and HDR but also, unusually, the premium Dolby Vision HDR format – are a touch brighter and more refined than those of the B6, making it a real temptation for the sort of gamer who can afford not to have to compromise. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/3de721a10003f2df0076a784e34c939d.jpg While most TV buyers will likely be attracted to the Panasonic DX802 series by their attractive prices and unique design (the screens hang between two easel-style legs), for gamers their appeal lies in their combination of strong picture quality, low input lag and, most strikingly of all, a huge audio performance courtesy of an external 12-speaker soundbar that lies between the TV's legs. This speaker is precise as well as powerful, enveloping you in the sound of the games you're playing. Input lag, meanwhile, measures just 34ms, while the bright, colourful, but also unusually subtle pictures unlock all the detail glories of the screen's UHD resolution, and many of the joys of HDR. Some more expensive TVs give you an even more dramatic HDR experience, and you need to remember to set the DX802s' Adaptive Backlight feature to its highest level to boost contrast, but overall you'll struggle to find such strong gaming – and movie – performance for the same money elsewhere. Picking a TV for gaming just got a whole lot trickier. The launch of the Xbox One S and PlayStation 4 Pro – not to mention Microsoft's Project Scorpio a year or so down the line – means console gaming is no longer just a full HD, standard dynamic range experience. Forward-thinking gamers also now need to be thinking about 4K/Ultra HD and high dynamic range for their next TVs. These new considerations, of course, come on top of the more traditional gaming TV issues of low input lag (the time it takes for a TV to render its images), good motion clarity, strong contrast (so you can't be easily ambushed by aliens and psychos hiding in dark corners) and bold color handling. In fact, picking a TV that's perfect for gaming is arguably more complicated than picking one for just watching movies and TV. Don't worry, though: martyrs that we are, we've spent countless hours gaming on a huge range of 2016 TVs to come up with the following list of 10 that we reckon are particularly well suited to taking your favorite waste of time to a whole new level of fun. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/adcee0879e8f4e855ea822f3828f32ea.jpg Whether by accident or design, Samsung seems to have hit upon a near-perfect gaming-friendly formula with the KS7500 range. There’s some good news for Microsoft as Windows 10 has turned its recent floundering around, with the latest stats for adoption of the OS showing a sizeable uptick this past month. According to Netmarketshare’s figures for November, Windows 10 has captured 23.72% of the desktop PC market, compared to 22.59% in October, representing a rise of 1.13%. That’s important for Microsoft because for the two months preceding November, Windows 10 appeared to hit a wall: in September, it actually lost almost half a percentage point of market share, and the OS essentially flat-lined in October, with a marginal increase of 0.06%. So this is the first time we’ve seen any gain since August, when the operating system put on a very healthy 1.86%. Good but not great Approaching the 2% level is a good boost for the OS which we’ve seen in a number of months over the course of this year, and while November’s rise of 1.13% isn’t quite so impressive, it’s still a good step forward. And doubtless a relief for Nadella and chums. Speculating about why the operating system winds have changed is always a tricky matter, but presumably new hardware being sold with Windows 10 installed is a growing part of this picture – particularly given that there were some tempting Black Friday discounts to be had on loads of laptops last month. Microsoft can quite possibly expect some further gains with Holiday sales this month, even given the weak state of the PC market (there are bright spots such as convertible laptops in particular). Of course, in the overall picture, Netmarketshare still has Windows 7 on top and well ahead of Windows 10 with a 47.17% market share, although it did decline by 1.21% in November. Windows 8/8.1 is languishing well behind with 9.97%, and isn’t actually that far ahead of Windows XP, which is still persisting on a share of 8.63%. Looking to buy a laptop? Most of the best ones come with Windows 10http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/software-news/~4/KQq1KSyBvgI

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/Z3NPEW36KgeQUzUqXReN6.png Everybody loves to make jokes about Microsoft, but while it does do the odd daft thing it’s also home to an incredible combination: some of the finest minds on the planet and an enormous bucket of money. That means it comes up with brilliant ideas such as Microsoft Worldwide Telescope, which enables you to access the world’s most powerful telescopes from wherever you’ve perched your PC. Why you need itHow many apps enable you to explore the entire universe without you even having to get on a bus, let lone train to be an astronaut? You can roam around solo trying to spot space aliens, or you can take a guided tour with narration from astronomers and educators showing you the most interesting things in the heavens above us. It’s touch-friendly if your PC has a touchscreen. Oh, and it also doubles as a time machine. Microsoft World Telescope can take you 2,000 years backwards in time or project you 2,000 years forwards into the future. Sadly that’s not far enough back to meet dinosaurs or far enough forward to experience the fiery death of the sun, but it’s still 4,000 years of astronomical amazingness. Thing is with Amazon though, it’s not the most user friendly site to navigate. With many different sellers touting the same products all at different prices, it can be a challenge to track down the best deals. That’s why you should check in with TechRadar every day for the rest of the month as we’ll be listing all of the deals that we think are genuinely worth your attention. Amazon is sharing with us in advance all of its biggest deals. We can’t tell you what they are until they go live on the site (sorry), but we’ll certainly be shouting to the rafters each day for every deal we think is awesome! Top 5 Amazon Black Friday deals last year:http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/a153bfdbe66adb078a09dcae31b25d1c.jpg 1. Sony PlayStation 4 (Graded) Amazon was one of a few sites selling refurbished PS4's for £199 which at the time was the cheapest PS4 price ever. This year you can expect even cheaper PS4 deals, and look out for bundle deals with games too. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/9RC94nADEiNKM8SdGkwgMQ.jpg 2. Amazon Fire TV Stick Many of Amazon's biggest discounts came on its own 'Fire' and 'Kindle' products. The Amazon Fire TV Stick was £24.99 last year, and it's well worth that price because it gives you access to Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and loads of games and apps. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/WFKNx3fkRLoJFWBobNa2SV.jpg 3. Kindle Paperwhite Amazon's awesome ebook reader was reduced to just £79.99 last year - it's Amazon hardware, so it's beautifully made and works really well. If you have an old kindle an upgrade is always worthwhile. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/g5wSPj9Sj8vsKxHKR9oNiN.jpg 4. HD TV's galore One of Amazon's best Black Friday deals was a 42-inch 1080p LG LCD TV for just £295, this was 40% off and a really great TV. This year expect 4K TVs to get some price drops as 1080p screens are dying out. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/GoxShdq9wmndGh3BmBocG3.jpg 5. The Samsung Galaxy S6 Samsung's excellent flagship phone of last year was going SIM-free for £343.99 on Black Friday last year, a smashing phone even this year and sure to be discounted again - look out for S7 deals too. http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/digital-home/~4/OWnc5vyzk2k

No? Well it does, and it goes in for Black Friday in a pretty significant way too as well as Cyber Monday, which starts tomorrow. The retailer sort of has two online stores. Tesco.com is the main entry for the grocery shopping portion. There are often electronic and other items on this store but there is a larger selection on Tesco Direct, and deals might only appear on one or the other. Tesco will also have some deals that are in-store only, so you may see mention of things online that you can't find unless you go to a shop. The Tesco Black Friday deals site is live now and there are already some super cheap prices that have had us logging in to grab a cheeky deal already. TVs were reduced too, although not as dramatically as some retailers and you could nab other things - like printers - cheap too. Best deal last year was on a Samsung Quantum Dot TV with an £880 discount - crikey! Top 5 Tesco Black Friday deals from 2015:http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/yjFRXyfxbbBNk35Pj6cwe7.jpg 1. Big home cinema TVs The massive 60-inch LCD TV from Samsung got an equally massive price drop from £2300 to £1420 - a great TV and Quantum Dot TVs are superb for deep blacks and rich colour. Expect more deals like this on Black Friday this year! http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/RPr9SGth5kHjsWta6jkpoB.jpg 2. Sony PS4 bundle deals PS4 with CoD Black Ops III was £289 on Black Friday last year and you got FIFA 16 free - console bundle deals are always hot in Black Friday week and this year there are new consoles coming, so deals will be even better. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/P5mRnFgaefvCec8FDtCU3G.jpg 3. Amazon Kindle Paperwhite Amazon's brilliant Kindle Paperwhite was down to £79.99 at Tesco Direct on Black Friday last year, always a great christmas gift this one, and a great price. Kindles are great for reading especially when you are away from home. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/S8nKuLKhmY6tf4aoCDSr3K.jpg 4. Fitbit Charge The Fitbit Charge is one of the best and simplest fitness trackers out there, last year Tesco dropped to to just £49 a steal, make sure you run away with it fast. This year the Fitbit Charge 2 is selling well so you could expect some decent discounting. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/UKGBsjJCmyKaBFpHCQLvMP.jpg 5. Navitech Apple watch dock Apple Watch owners got £14 off a Navitech Apple Watch charging dock last year on Black Friday, a smashing deal at the time. Apple Watch accessories like straps are prime fodder for price drops during Black Friday. Tesco Black Friday deals to expect in 2016:1. As with a lot of retailers, expect a cheap deal on the PS4. The old model has been replaced with the Slim and Pro models, so stock will need to be cleared - bundles offer the best value and snag you a game or two. 2. Expect another round of deals on the Amazon Kindle, the company has updated them again so the old stock needs to go. 3. Last year's insane TV deal is likely to get another outing. Entry-level 4K TVs will cost meer hundreds, with high-end models coming in with massive discounts too. 4. It's reasonable to expect some of Tesco's summer toys for kids will get a massive price drop too - need a trampoline? This is likely the time to buy, and they're great even in the winter. Paddling pools less so. 5. New Apple Watch and iPhone mean there may be reductions on the older models, Tesco has its own mobile network, so deals are quite likely. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/Z3NPEW36KgeQUzUqXReN6.png Some torrent apps offer every conceivable function. Others keep things as simple as possible. qBittorrent sits right in the middle, aiming to “meet the needs of most users while using as little CPU and memory as possible”. That means while it isn’t too frightening it still packs in a lot of features. It boasts an integrated torrent search engine, media player, encryption, prioritisation of torrents and the files within those torrents, IP filtering and torrent creation, and it’s the closest open source, crapware-free equivalent to uTorrent. If you’re looking for a well behaved torrent client that covers the essentials without getting overly complicated, qBittorrent is great. Why you need itDespite their dodgy reputation, torrent files are still a very good way of shifting enormous amounts of data around the web, and they’re particularly good for things such as massive disk images or media files - but unfortunately some of the torrent apps out there aren’t great. qBittorrent is: it’s open source, which means it's completely free, devoid of ads, and can be developed and extended by anyone with something to add. If you’ve found other torrent apps a little too keen on blasting you with ads or changing things on your PC, you’ll find the difference refreshing. Download here: qBittorrent http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/XpjytZKadYHuY5Kqsnopd7.jpg The best free torrent client 2016Torrent files turn your computer into part of a swarm where data is shared as it's downloaded, so while you're downloading something from other people you're also helping others download the bits you've already got. The result is a very reliable and often very fast way to get your hands on huge files. To use torrent files, you need a client; here are our favorites. In all areas of business and administration, digitisation is a hard fact. If you fail to implement the latest digital strategies and technological solutions, you almost certainly risk falling behind the crowd. To survive, you have to put tech first. Of course, while technology is clearly taking over, there are still a lot of people out there who’d prefer to stick to old-fashioned approaches. And physical paperwork is a good example. Sceptics who are fearful over issues such as privacy and security, especially when dealing with important documents, would rather print items off. In areas such as government, law, education and healthcare, you have no choice when it comes to dealing with paper-based documents. If it’s a legal contract, for instance, it’ll probably be posted out to you. But that takes time and money. Here's how to go about digitising your paper documentsThis is where optical character recognition (OCR) technology enters the scene. Simply put, it is the process of turning images and electronic versions of handwritten, typed or printed documents into machine-encoded text. The idea is that when you’re dealing with physical documents, you have a way to digitise them. There are a number of software packages out there that are capable of doing this, and they mainly aim to make typing up text easier. Normally, if you’re at a meeting and have to take down notes, you’d be expected to type it all into a Word document. Well, OCR makes these sort of tasks far easier and quicker. In this article, we’re going to highlight the best OCR solutions out there. We’ve also rounded up the 7 best email marketing serviceshttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/5wZeTzvrJmVtPNbrGDtsKm.jpg American software company Nuance has a number of useful applications for dealing with optical character recognition. OmniPage, the firm’s flagship program in this area, has been designed to make scanning documents to a local computer or network server quick and painless. The system is capable of handling high volumes of documents from multiple devices, document archiving and document conversion in cloud storage. As well as this, you can turn paper, forms, digital camera images and PDF files into fully editable, searchable and shareable electronic files. You can get yourself Nuance OmniPage herehttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/Tiseb6kvFgRH3LfD8xkoGm.jpg Nuance also offers a package called PaperPort Professional, which is aimed mainly at small businesses and sole traders. It offers you a productive and cost-effective way to scan, organise, find and share a mixture of documents, including paper, PDFs, legal documents and photographs. All in all, it’s a solution well worth considering for those with less expansive needs when it comes to OCR duties. The software wants to enhance the way you deal with documents, whether it’s extracting, editing, archiving or sharing items. FineReader is capable of turning scanned documents, PDFs and photos into editable text forms, including Microsoft Word, Excel and eBooks. As well as this, it aims to preserve all aspects of original documents, avoiding reformatting. The system can perfectly protect items such as headers, footers, footnotes, tables, graphs and charts. Documents open quickly too, and you don’t have to worry about images looking low-quality. FineReader automatically selects the best possible optimum image pre-processing tools. You can get yourself Abbyy FineReader 12 Professional herehttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/6jC73TsxVfZ7bwCYswb9Lm.jpg If you want to create PDF documents specifically, then it’s worth checking out Soda PDF. This software gives you the ability to turn pretty much any file into a PDF. In all, more than 300 file types are supported by the solution. Once you’ve created a PDF, you can do some other neat things. For instance, you can edit the contents of your documents, and you’re even able to create custom files and add annotations to existing PDFs. There’s a handy feature for sending and tracking contracts as well. You can download the software onto Mac and Windows computers, or if you’d prefer, there’s the option to use it within a browser. Soda PDF requires you to sign up for an annual subscription, but before making a purchase, you can test the software for free to see if it fits your needs. You can get yourself Soda PDF herehttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/qe8eVs3kwANdNjv7nXZGMm.jpg Adobe Acrobat is one of the most recognisable OCR software packages, although it’s placed at the higher-end of the market in terms of its cost. Of course, Acrobat is targeted at enterprises in particular, so it’s not likely to be cheap. It offers an easy-to-use interface and lets you export items to Microsoft Office documents quickly and accurately. Even though you can’t create your own eBooks using the software, you can generate PDFs, and you can also use it to sign and send important forms.
