http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/software/Microsoft/Windows%20Phone%2081%20hands%20on/Review/wp81-1-470-75.jpgWindows 10 for Phones should mark one of the biggest transitions in Windows Phone history, and today the public - some of it, at least - can finally try it out. Microsoft's new mobile operating system arrives today in the form of a technical preview for Windows Phone users who've enrolled in the Windows Insider program. Microsoft's Surface Pro 3: laptop killer? To get started, download the Windows Insider app from Microsoft's digital storefront. There's one more barrier to trying out Windows 10 for phones, though: only users with the Lumia 630, Lumia 635, Lumia 636, Lumia 638, Lumia 730 or Lumia 830 will be able to install it today, and even they should do so with caution - this is an unfinished build, after all. Microsoft says this first Windows 10 for phones technical preview includes some new features and improvements, but not everything that will change in the full version. We're expecting to learn even more about Windows 10 for phones at MWC 2015 in March. Until then, you can get more details on the preview at the Windows Blog. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/TRBC/Software/Windows%2010%20Jan%202015%20Hands%20On/windows-10-jan-15-hero-470-75.jpgMicrosoft's cross-platform Office 365 suite and Windows 10 have received another shot in the arm following the acquisition of Sunrise, a next-generation calendar app for touch screen devices. The plan is that Microsoft will incorporate Sunrise into Office 365 for its touch-optimised version of Windows 10 as part of the company's vision to "create more meaningful, beautiful experiences in mobile email and calendaring across all platforms." Sunrise, which began life as a newsletter providing calendar information by email, changed its spots to become a mobile-facing calendar that brings together information from all facets of your digital life. Anyone familiar with the Apple desktop calendar that comes as part of Yosemite will be familiar with the layout of Sunrise when it eventually appears in Windows 10, which itself should be released to manufacturers in June. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/TRBCNews/Sunrise/sunrise-420-100.jpg Sunrise will remain freeThe developers of Sunrise, in a separate release, have promised that the app will continue to be free for all desktop users as well as those on the wealth of other platforms that it is offered. The deal mirrors the one it made last year for Accompli, a mobile email client that eventually morphed into Outlook for iOS and Android, and it's expected that Microsoft will have much the same attitude when it comes to Sunrise. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/logos/microsoft-1-bett-470-75.JPGMicrosoft has moved to patch-up a critical vulnerability in Windows that it worked to repair for over a year after it was first reported. Two separate patches (MS15-011 and MS15-014) were released in tandem that, when employed together, plug a gap in group policies and limit the threat of a third-party code execution that could allow hackers to take "complete control of an affected system." MS15-011, the more critical of the two patches, prevents that control taking place and Microsoft warned that if not installed could "allow remote code execution if an attacker convinces a user with a domain-configured system to connect to an attacker-controlled network." One of the typical ways it was able to be used was through an on-LAN or man-in-the-middle attack where corporate data on Windows machines was vulnerable when connected to a non-trusted network without the use of a virtual private network (VPN). Windows Server 2003 gets no patchJAS Global Advisors brought the problem to Microsoft's attention in January 2014 and kept it quiet so that Microsoft could work on a solution to fix what is called "complicated issue" by JAS, and it was sympathetic to the length of time it took. The patch covers Windows Vista; Windows Server 2003, 2008, 2008 R2, 2012, and 2012 R2, Windows 7, 8 and 8.1; and Windows RT and RT 8.1. Of all those, Windows Server 2003 is the only one that won't be receiving a patch and anyone using it is advised to upgrade. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/TRBC/People/John-Cooke-470-75.jpgAgile software development offers a flexible framework to help teams maintain a clear focus on the rapid delivery of business value. In the current working environment the pace of change has accelerated and businesses need to be able to react to this. More traditional software development methods do not support change effectively and this is where agile is well placed. Agile software development allows organisations to prioritise what is important, respond to change, and deliver results and business value early. As a result, businesses can significantly reduce the overall risk associated with software development. Agile ultimately returns the control to the business through customer focus and a process of continuous planning and feedback. Agile also allows organisations to keep a close eye on costs and adapt quickly to change. Agile versus waterfallAll development goes through certain stages: conception, initiation, analysis, design, construction, testing, implementation, and maintenance. The difference between agile and waterfall development is how they approach these various stages. Waterfall is a sequential design process, where the design and development requirements for a system are mapped out up front. By having all the requirements beforehand everyone knows exactly what they are aiming to achieve. This means the client knows what to expect and has an idea of the timeframe, size and cost of the project. The downside to this traditional approach is that the client may not get as many opportunities to feedback as they would with agile development, or have the room to change elements of the design/development. Because the process is sequential, once a stage of development has been completed you can't easily go back to a previous stage to make changes. This is fairly risky for a business because if the initial requirements of the project change in any way, the project is almost guaranteed to fail. In turn, the business would then incur the additional costs of rectifying any issues, and the project would take longer than predicted. Agile or Waterfall? How to successfully manage mixed methodologiesIncremental developmentAgile methodology follows an incremental approach to development and has a strong focus on the delivery of what the client needs rather than what they think they want. Developers start off with a simple project design instead of a large document, and work on small modules. As short iterations of work on the project are done (usually in weekly or fortnightly cycles) priorities of the project are reviewed, evaluated and tested. At each stage an increasingly complete product is provided to the client which they are able to use and provide feedback on. The mind-set of an agile development team is to plan for and embrace change. It is this responsiveness and flexibility that gives agile the edge in the business environment. Businesses are constantly changing and may have to react to external changes and agile can accommodate this. Testing is done as the product is developed, ensuring that any bugs are found early on in the process, and the product can be released much more quickly. Early feedback also means that developers can create a more specific product, helping to meet the client's needs more effectively. Each methodology has its pros and cons, but evidence shows that with the pace of change increasing many more companies are choosing to adopt an agile software development approach. Agile myths versus realityAgile is a silver bullet: there is nothing to say that an agile project will succeed. Success very much depends on those driving the project. However, because agile allows you to make changes, there is plenty of opportunity to review and refocus the project if needed. This helps to avoid any additional time and costs. Agile is not scalable: generally speaking, software development itself has scaling issues. The larger the project's scope, the greater the possibility for failure – and the greater the number of people involved in a project, the greater the communication risk and complexity. Agile development breaks one project down into smaller projects with shorter delivery timeframes and smaller teams, so the room for error is reduced and the activity is broken into small, manageable pieces. This helps businesses keep control over a project and manage a project more effectively. Agile means no planning: this really relates to a lack of understanding of an agile planning approach. Most agile teams spend as much time, if not more, planning projects, but the planning is not all upfront, and much of it is spread across the lifetime of the project. Agile's focus on delivering early and often means that planning is focused on tangible outcomes. It allows teams to respond much more easily to changes in requirements, business demands or people issues. This gives businesses greater flexibility. Agile means no documentation: a more accurate way of looking at this is that Agile doesn't do documentation for documentation's sake. Documentation, as with any other deliverable on a project, gets estimated and prioritised like any other task. Keeping documentation to a minimum ensures that time isn't wasted on reams of unused plans and reports. The rise of agileWhilst both approaches to software development are still in use today, the last five years has seen agile development quickly becoming the preferred approach for many of the world's leading technology companies. Many industry leaders have incorporated and embraced agile development, and now both big and small companies are increasingly looking to agile solutions for their businesses and thriving as a result. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/DOWNLOADS/image_editors/GIMP/Dotd-56-GIMP-470-75.jpgThere are so many brilliant features and powerful tools available for free with GIMP that you'll wonder why anyone pays for Photoshop any more. Why you need itIt may be the most famous image editor on the market, but Photoshop certainly comes with a hefty price tag. But that shouldn't mean you have to go without powerful imaging software, and that certainly seems to be a sentiment shared by the creators of GIMP. GIMP (short for GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a free alternative to Photoshop that more than holds its own. But don't think that the lack of a price tag means GIMP is lacking in features; it packs enough punch to genuinely rival Adobe's imaging behemoth. It comes with impressive selection and montage features, various ways to retouch your images, cropping, noise reduction and colour adjustment tools, customisable brushes, gradients and so much more. There's plenty for the more advanced user, too, including layer masks, bezier curves, filters and even an animation package. The interface is highly customisable, and the GIMP community has produced a ton of excellent plugins that are all free to download. The program is loaded with tutorials and there's plenty of assistance to be found in the active and helpful community, so don't worry if you get stuck – help is always at hand. We don't have space to even begin to scratch the surface here, so download GIMP and find out exactly why it's such a popular free alternative to Adobe Photoshop. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/software/Tidal/interview/TIDAL_Pal_Bratelund_HiFi_Manager-470-75.jpgHow Tidal plans to surpass SpotifyWe've sung Tidal's praises before. Launched in September 2014, the music streaming service already has 17,000 users and looks poised to grow thanks to one audio-savvy rapper shelling out $56 million (about £37 million, AU$73 million) in a deal that could make Tidal a household name. But even if you know just what Tidal is and why people love it, you haven't heard the full story until you've talked to Pål Bråtelund, strategic partnership manager at Tidal. On a call with TechRadar from Scandinavia, Pål enlightened me on the history of Tidal (formerly called Wimp), and his version of what's to come for an industry that's "ready to explode." http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Tidal/interview/WiMP_Paal_Bratelund-420-90.jpg A bit of background: Tidal is a music streaming service, but it isn't Spotify. It's close, but Pål explained Tidal is different because "it's CD-quality music streaming. Similar to how you can watch Netflix in full-HD on your iPad, you can listen to full CD-quality [music] on your phone." It's not the first streaming service to dive into higher-end audio, and by the sounds of it won't be the last. Tidal has big plans for 2015, and thanks to some generous bankrolling on behalf of Jay-Z, it finally has the funds to see them through. A new tiered payment model may be en route, as well as even higher resolution audio. Then there's the elephant in the room: a music mogul dropping $56 million on the service and its future. TechRadar: You've launched in the US, UK and elsewhere, but does the world seem ready for easy-access, hi-res music? Pål Bråtelund: The answer here is "of course," but we can discuss this a little bit. There's a lot of confusion about the definition of hi-res. I think a lot of it has to do with marketing people getting involved [laughs] and a lot of them have been talking about hi-resolution TV. We had HD-ready screens, then full-HD screens, then we got 4K, then 8K, then 15K… http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Tidal/interview/TIDALHero-420-90.jpg The comparison to the audio world is natural to make, sure. But in my world the term 'lossless,' for when we go back from a compressed format to CD quality, is pretty much the ground floor of hi-resolution. I'm almost reluctant to use the word hi-resolution for CD quality, because in my world that's actually higher than CD quality. But I think the giant leap now is to get back to CD quality because we've lived for two decades now with crap. And we had something good. So let's go back to something good. From there we will go into higher resolution. TR: Does the team at Tidal consider Spotify 'the competition?' PB: Yes and no. We are trying to do something different. Of course we get compared a lot, and I understand why - I constantly compare HBO and Netflix. But then again, we are trying to do something else. We are trying to create an entertainment channel where you can read quality articles inside the application, you can see music videos and that functionality will only get better. It's a whole experience. It's more than just music streaming. It's only the very beginning, and it's only going to get better. TR: Really? How? PB: We're opening in more countries so you're going to see more articles from different places. If you wonder what the music scene is like in Berlin, you'll be able to find out from where you're sitting. But what I didn't mention is that we're dabbling with higher than CD-quality streaming. TR: Come again? PB: We're working on a product with higher than CD quality resolution. TR: I thought lossless was the best it could be. What's higher than lossless? Tidal talks price, Jay-Z and streaming master format audio PB: I divide music quality into three categories. One is the lossy format where you have MP3, AAC and stuff that Spotify uses. The next up is lossless, which is the same as CD quality, which is 44.1KHz audio. Which means the sound wave has been sampled 44,100 times per second. Because of the physical format some compromises had to be made. But now we live in an age where we can just download music. We're not limited by physics. Most people record at 96KHz/24bit. That's the typically production format. We've talked so much of CD quality, but we're starting to talk about original master format. TR: When would master format audio come to Tidal? Could that happen in 2015? PB: Yes, it could very well happen in 2015. TR: Your $20/£20 per month subscription price may seem steep to some people. Do you see it changing anytime soon? PB: In one way I hope we're going to be alone with lossless streaming for a long time. I don't think we will. It's going to commoditize. The price for our lossless offering will probably go down a little bit, but there will probably be an introduction of a real, high, above-CD-quality resolution offering as well. In streaming we'll probably begin three to four tiers. The first one, which I dislike very much because I'm a studio artist, is the freemium model; then [we'll offer a] premium option for around $9.99/£10. Today's $20/£20 offering will drop to around $15-16/£15-16, and there will be a real studio quality option will be above that, though I can't begin to speculate on the price. TR: I know Scandanavia has strict laws about disclosing information on pending deals, but is there anything you'd like to say about Jay-Z's plan to buy Tidal? PB: I've been away in London for the last week. I know I can't say anything, but honestly I just haven't been around. TR: What's the mood like in the office? PB: I'm sensing everyone's excited, curious maybe. Of course the deal isn't through yet. TR: Do you think Jay-Z is going to move there? PB: [laughs]…he's more than welcome to. For us it's about making good, high-quality music available to people. Nothing has changed overnight. For us, it's business as usual. TR: What are you personally excited about in audio in 2015? PB: I'm looking forward to a better experience in the car - anything that does portable audio and follows you into the car. I want to talk to the car to play the newest album and have it do that. Funny enough, I see portable music devices that have a high spec coming back. Look at what Sony is doing with the NW-ZX2 Walkman. With Google Wallet being overshadowed by Apple Pay, Google is working on the new mobile payment service to steal some of the spotlight back, reports The Information. Looking for a Chromebook? These are the bestPlaso reportedly activates when a user with the service enabled on their phone (and Bluetooth turned on) enters a store with the tech installed. It then lets users pay without even having to take their phones out of their pockets, according to the site's sources. Store employees would be able to access users' payment options by simply asking them their initials, which raises a lot of privacy and security questions. First and foremost: what if two people in one store have the same initials? Luckily Google can take its time to iron out this type of kink before announcing the Plaso service officially - assuming this rumor pans out to begin with. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/TRBC/Generic/Stress/PCA176.hd_extra.istkcrsh-470-75.jpgInadequate BYOD (bring your own device) policies combined with a thirst for online dating is putting employee and company data at risk according to a new report published by IBM Security researchers at IBM reported that 26 of 41 Android dating apps they analysed had medium or high security vulnerabilities that could leave enterprises or employees open to hacking, spying or theft of important data. IBM didn't name any of the vulnerable apps, but did say it found that employees at almost 50 per cent of the companies it surveyed were using the apps involved, which translates to millions of daters. Problems are exacerbated by employees using the same mobile device for their work and personal lives, known as bring your own device (BYOD). This becomes a problem if it isn't managed properly and IBM thinks "sensitive corporate data" can be leaked through employee devices in all manner of different ways. Cameras and microphones open to exploitationIBM's researchers warned that once hackers have tricked device owners into providing access they can turn on the camera or microphone to listen in on confidential business meetings or private conversations within organisations. Whilst many enterprises are jumping at the chance to implement a BYOD policy thanks to the reduced operating costs that come with it, many are still worried about security problems that can be eliminated by simply taking time to develop a BYOD policy that is water-tight. What is BYOD and why is it important?Source: Reuters http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/4349f717/sc/1/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/218611700375/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4349f717/sc/1/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/218611700375/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4349f717/sc/1/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/218611700375/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4349f717/sc/1/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/218611700375/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4349f717/sc/1/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/218611700375/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4349f717/sc/1/a2t.img

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/TRBC/Videoconferencing/Chromebox%20for%20Meetings/chromeboxm-470-75.jpgThere are a number of areas that need to be addressed if an agile project is to deliver the expected results within the available budget. First and foremost, a decision needs to be made at the start of a project as to whether agile is in fact the right way to deliver it. With all the talk of the benefits around agile, it can be easy to lose sight of the fact that there are still situations where traditional development is a valid choice. For example, where there is a clear and static definition of the requirements and how the organisation wants to deliver them, agile is unlikely to be the best option. To help make this important decision, some organisations choose to work with a consultancy partner to assess the project and the landscape in which it will be operating. This doesn't need to be either costly or time-consuming – and given that getting this decision right can be key to the project's success, it's a worthwhile thing to do. If it's decided that agile is the most appropriate development methodology to use, then the three key things that will enable the project to be a success are: collaboration, constant focus on business value, and appropriate level of quality. We'll discuss those elements now… CollaborationThere are multiple facets to collaboration on agile projects, and all involved need to understand their responsibilities, appreciate why their part in the jigsaw is crucial, and then ensure they deliver. Stakeholders around the organisation need to collaborate with the Product Owner to provide feedback on the software as it's demonstrated. At the same time, the Product Owner has to collaborate with these stakeholders to provide the interface to the project team. Where relevant, the Scrum Master needs to collaborate with both the Product Owner and the delivery team to organise and facilitate the smooth running of each iteration. Lastly, the entire delivery team needs to collaborate with one another to ensure the software is delivered within the allocated time. Constant focus on business valueOne of the central benefits of agile projects is their promise to deliver a solution that truly meets the needs of the organisation, as underlined by the first guiding principle behind the Agile Manifesto, which states that: "Our highest priority is to satisfy the customer through early and continuous delivery of valuable software." To make sure this happens – and that the system delivers real business value – the Product Owner needs to keep clear in their mind what the desired business outcomes are and ensure these are communicated clearly to the delivery team. These business outcomes will need to be reassessed on an ongoing basis to ensure they remain relevant. Feedback from the customer is key to this, and the review with business users at the end of each iteration is important in obtaining this. Appropriate level of qualityIt's absolutely essential to ensure an appropriate level of quality assurance remains part of the project, which must fit within the time available in each iteration. One of the principles behind the Agile Manifesto stresses that "continuous attention to technical excellence and good design enhances agility." Overcoming common challengesProblems can arise if the organisation where the project is being run does not fully understand agile or how to support agile projects. Firstly, from a governance perspective, there can be an expectation of traditional PRINCE2 or waterfall 'gates', through which the process must pass for visible quality assurance purposes. Agile projects tend not to have such formal structures, but that does not mean there is no governance or visibility to the customer; indeed, the review at the end of each iteration provides regular insight for the customer on how the project is progressing (and the frequency of these reviews means that the customer typically gets a view of progress much more frequently than they would in a waterfall project). Agile projects also produce artefacts such as burndown charts and cumulative flow diagrams, which give further visibility of progress to the customer. Other difficulties can arise if an inexperienced or powerless Product Owner is appointed. This role is absolutely critical, and having the wrong person can result in input from the business being weak or non-existent, leading to the failure of the project. Some organisations that are just starting out in agile choose to work with an experienced partner, who can assist the Product Owner, or even provide a suitable candidate to fill the role. Experience is keyIn summary, there are challenges when it comes to delivering agile projects, particularly in inexperienced organisations. But these are not insurmountable when approached in the right way. Experience counts for a lot, and by working with a partner who has run successful agile projects in a range of situations, organisations who are new to agile can make their first foray into this type of development a successful one. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/DOWNLOADS/utilities/System-Explorer/Dotd-55-System-Explorer-470-75.jpgAll kinds of processes and programs run in the background of your computer; find out exactly what they're up to and how they're impacting your hardware thanks to System Explorer. Why you need itWindows 8 vastly improved the default Windows Task Manager, but if you want an even more powerful tool – or don't own a copy of Windows 8 – then System Explorer is a superb free option. Virtually every feature of System Explorer is designed to make managing your open processes as easy as possible, while simultaneously placing some powerful tools at your fingertips. The tabbed interface, for instance, is divided into Tasks, Processes, Performance, History, Networking and Autoruns, thereby making it simple to isolate the issues and information you need to find. System Explorer can help in other ways; for example, glancing at a list of open processes isn't much help if you don't recognise the process name or know if it's safe. The program solves this by allowing you to check the process against its online database of potential threats, quickly letting you determine whether you need to kill any particular process. There are even some useful diagnostic tools, such as a processor monitor and detailed networking information. These are displayed as graphs, letting you see whether your PC's internals were put under strain when you launched a certain program. System Explorer provides much more than the default Windows Task Manager, providing you with a more complete picture of what's happening on your PC underneath the hood. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/mobile_phones/iPhone/iPhone%205/HandsOn/iPhone5HandsOn-23-470-75.jpgAgility and productivity have long been major concerns for enterprises, but they've taken on a new urgency with the rapidly advancing mobile revolution. As all types of businesses scramble to launch effective mobile app strategies, the issue of how to build out the mobile environment is ever more pressing. And the stakes are high. Recent research from Salesforce.com shows that 60% of UK businesses are using mobile apps and that they can boost productivity by 34%. However, it also shows that 59% of organisations are slow to deliver. So how do enterprises speed the delivery and ensure they are optimising their productivity? I believe the secret lies in simplicity. There is little value in developing over complex solutions that no one can use, or investing in sophisticated tools that remain underutilised by under-skilled IT staff. Instead CEOs should encourage their IT departments to get the basics right and take advantage of easy to integrate online tools, open source software and pay-as-you-go services to start developing their own productivity and operational apps. A DIY approach to app developmentWay back in 2011, Gartner predicted that by 2014, at least 25% of enterprise applications would be built by 'citizen developers' – defined as end users who build applications for consumption by themselves and their peers using company sanctioned resources. A surprisingly large percentage of these citizen devs are proving to be from the 18-30 demographic who are finding their own ways to source or develop mobile apps, whether or not company sanctioned resources are available. They are being aided by a new generation of drag and drop tools which are aimed at those employees with business domain knowledge but no coding or IT process skills. Simplifying the development and publishing of apps in this way can provide immediate relief from mobile app development skills shortages. It also means that app development need no longer be a purely IT function but can be allocated, budgeted and resourced from other business functions. Building your own simple enterprise app environment can also help reduce company data risks, accelerate time-to-develop and make it easier to engage with end users, and furnish them with a curated app store. Making it easier to mobilise your businessIt is important that CEOs who want their business to be able to create, develop, publish and manage its own apps quickly in response to operational, market and customer needs, are aware of the processes involved. This includes: Understanding the business needDefining what the application must doDesigning the user interfaces and technical requirementsDesigning and potentially modifying back-end APIs for data transferIntegrating a security modelFunctional and non-functional requirementsDesigning the graphic look and feel, including user interface and user experienceChoosing the target operating systems and devicesEnabling the required development environments, testing and toolsThe application deployment, and how that will be managedSetting up a maintenance program to keep the application current with devices and updated operating platformsMany of these processes are manual and time consuming. The challenge for a business is to, where possible, simplify the development and deployment of mobile apps by selectively automating the more complex work involved in certain steps, so that existing resources can use their existing skills to do the work. But it's not just about creating custom apps; it's also about having simple tools to manage the app lifecycle. If left unchecked self-service apps from unauthorised sources will dilute the value to a business through data, information and interactive services becoming increasingly fragmented, and unreliable. The ability to curate enterprise apps into an approved enterprise app store, while still at manageable levels, can avoid this by giving employees all the apps they need in one easy to find place. To maximise development budget, I suggest you consider the following areas for investment: 1. Methods that help the business define what they want in a clear and simplified way, e.g. rapid prototyping. 2. A development environment and infrastructure that handles the more complex steps during multi-platform development with open source tools like Cordova – as well as handling authentication, push, and store-forward-synchronisation. 3. Custom enterprise app stores to deploy, curate and manage the apps. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/internet/salesforcefiles-470-75.jpgFor more than ten years now, Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) has cemented its place as the business service delivery model of choice – whether the call to action be collaboration or analytics. This is due, in large part, to Salesforce.com's IPO in June 2004 which validated the model in a way previously unseen. Similar to the large satellite phones of the 1980s that eventually morphed into modern smartphones, SaaS has taken the long road to popular adoption. This journey has yielded lasting results. Last year's annual global survey of CIOs by Gartner found that 72% of respondents are already using SaaS, yet the results demonstrated there is still potential for greater adoption. In another study by KPMG, nearly half of executives surveyed identified cloud-delivered SaaS as their most likely area for investment. While Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) and Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) are frequently hailed as fundamental to cloud computing, it is actually SaaS that's proved it is here to stay. The reasons whySo why, when Gartner's global CIO Survey found that 17% of CIOs expect a budget decrease, is the SaaS market projected to be in the black for years to come? These are the top three reasons why SaaS is so sticky… 1. CostPreviously, companies would need to buy, build, and maintain IT infrastructures to support application deployment. With SaaS, the only infrastructure needed is broadband internet connectivity. Rather than paying a licensing fee, companies must simply pay on a subscription basis, similar to a monthly magazine subscription. 2. Flexibility and speedThe multi-tenancy model of SaaS allows organisations to scale rapidly without incurring additional infrastructure or staffing costs. As a technology buyer, one can easily try out a few subscription seats on the platform. Service providers can readily support customers and respond to changing market requirements faster than with on-premise software. While this is important in and of itself, it is further pertinent for volatile markets and industries. What's more, SaaS solutions can be provisioned with great speed, often with simply a browser and an internet connection from a wide range of desktop and mobile devices. 3. IntegrationImplementing a SaaS solution can happen without disrupting day-to-day business and without necessitating a rip-and-replace exercise for a legacy IT system. It integrates with your existing investments, rather than displacing them. In fact, many SaaS products come with ready-made tools to integrate with popular packages. Advantage SaaSWith these advantages, SaaS remains a model for technology to drive and deliver innovation in businesses. In the enterprise, SaaS is also going strong. Salesforce is the de-facto CRM package and a host of other providers like Huddle, Box and Workshare are making headway. Additionally, SaaS made its name initially with software to help manage sales, but it's now equally used to manage suppliers. As a litmus test, consider how many of your colleagues are using Dropbox to share files rather than relying purely on the corporate fileserver. SaaS will remain the dominant cloud model of the future. Smart businesses that are looking to focus more time and energy on their core objectives rather than delving in the IT weeds should evaluate whether the above benefits are in line with their own corporate goals. SaaS might not make sense for every business, but while the question a decade ago was, "should we make this offering available in the cloud?" – the question today is, "why should we offer this service in an on-premise version?" This signifies the massive mind shift that has occurred. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/other/Generics/Typing%20on%20keyboard%20hands-470-75.jpgHP forecasts that Internet users face a huge challenge to create one unified online identity that covers everything and ensures that information shared online is completely secure. Speaking at the European Information Security Summit 2015 in London, HP enterprise services CTO Andrzej Kawalec thinks that managing information shared using social media, the cloud and Internet of Things devices will be extremely tricky in the future. "All these things are all about sharing data, not about security. Securing all the data shared in this way is a huge challenge in the absence of any standards to enable us to take control," said Kawalec, according to Computer Weekly. There are three areas Kawalec identified that need urgent action when it comes to security going forwards. Firstly time must be spent to understand "our adversaries" and work out how to curtail their activities. Secondly "we need to understand and identify our risk" to better protect and enable our information assets. Lastly, collaboration and sharing must be fostered to gain a more rounded view of threats and extend security capabilities. Major mobile exploit expectedKawalec went on to outline the biggest security challenges we will face in 2015 including a major mobile exploit in the next 12 months, industry-specific attacks becoming the norm, and the fact that open-source software must be managed better in organisations. He also explained that there needs to be an effort to find an alternative to password-based authentication in the future and that protecting data should be the highest priority of all. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/TRBC/Password%20Managers/PasswordBox-470-75.jpgIntroduction, LastPass, PasswordBoxEven though protecting all your data online is incredibly important, most web users choose the same password for multiple sites without giving a second thought to installing a program that adds an extra layer of protection. The good news is that there are plenty of password managers out there that do everything from keeping your passwords and details under lock and key using a master password to generating hard-to-crack passwords for you to save and use on any website that requires one. Here's our pick of the top five password managers out there right now and why you should install them. 1. LastPass Password ManagerFree or $12 per year for Premium (About £8, AU$16) For those that want something discreet and aren't a fan of toolbars, LastPass Password Manager is the program to download. It operates as a small red icon with a star in the middle that automatically prompts you to save passwords every time you visit a site. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/TRBC/Password%20Managers/LastPass-420-90.jpg It works best when you visit a site that a password is saved for. The LastPass box will immediately show up how many accounts have been saved for the site in question and these can be viewed by either clicking the star in the login form or by clicking the LastPass browser icon. LastPass offers the form filling and password generator that have become the standard of password managers and a premium account, which costs just $12 (around £8, or AU$16) per year, allows you to use it across mobile devices. When it comes to password managers, there aren't any that beat LastPass. 2. PasswordBoxFree Of all the password managers out there, PasswordBox has the most polished interface of them all by simply using the logos of each site that is saved to the vault. Even though many password managers are simple to operate, PasswordBox stands out as one for those that usually opt for the best looking application out there. Like LastPass, PasswordBox is a small browser extension that sits in the top right corner of any browser you have installed and it has an indicator that specifies when the extension is switched on. Using it is as easy as clicking the add-on and then choosing the website you want to visit that it will then log you into automatically. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/TRBC/Password%20Managers/PasswordBox-420-90.jpg PasswordBox differs from the others in that it can be set up as the browser home page and every time you open a new tab it will give you a list of options to head to with the username and password filled in for instant login. It again offers the password generator option but this time there are options to specify the length of it as well as whether or not it should include letters, numbers, symbols or capital letters. Perhaps the best part about the service, which has just been acquired by Intel Security, is that the encrypted service is one of the only ones that can be downloaded on mobile devices without needing to fork out for a premium subscription. RoboForm, Keeper Desktop, Password Depot3. RoboFormFree for 30 days then $10 per month (around £7 or AU$13) Password managers are almost expected to do a bit more than just lock away your prized safe words and RoboForm arguably does more than any other password manager out there. Running as a toolbar inside your browser, every option is immediately available to you every time a browser window is opened via the toolbar. RoboForm works by making you set up one master password, which you must remember, and this gives access to all your passwords as well as any other saved data such as form fill information, credit card numbers and other information you might want to save. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/TRBC/Password%20Managers/RoboForm-420-90.jpg When you save a password for a site it also gives you the option to add it to the RoboForm toolbar therefore giving you even easier access to your favourite sites and the strong AES encryption used makes RoboForm a strong option for all users. The program does fall down against others due to the fact you have to pay $10 (around £7 or AU$13) a month after the 30-day free trial, but the level of service, which also covers mobile devices, is sufficient enough that the small fee is by no means excessive. 4. Keeper DesktopFree for 30 days then from $9.99 per year (around £7 or AU$13) Unlike most of the other top password managers out there, Keeper Desktop, as the name suggests, runs from your computer and isn't simply a browser extension. What this does mean is that it's a lot more extensive than the others and therefore harder to setup for the everyday user. As is to be expected, users can download a browser extension that allows you to save details using the desktop program and then login automatically using the form fill feature that is built-in. Unfortunately this extra step, which isn't present in most other programs, could put off users that want a simple service to save passwords whilst in the browser window. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/TRBC/Password%20Managers/Keeper-Desktop-420-90.jpg With a billing that states it's the world's most secure password manager and digital vault out there you know that there's probably a small fee to pay and you wouldn't be wrong. The good news is that for one device it costs just $9.99 (around £7 or AU$13) a year and $29.99 (around £20, or AU$39) a year for the backup unlimited service, which covers any devices you want to keep secured. For that price you get unlimited password storage, encrypted cloud backup, secure sharing of passwords, web app access and the latter option also benefits from multi-device syncing to keep all your data up-to-date on whichever device you're using. 5. Password DepotFree or €29.95 for premium edition (around £22, $34, or AU$44) Finishing off the top five is another one that, although it asks for a fee, will still let you get quite a lot of functionality out of its freeware version - just so long as you don't sign up for anymore than 20 websites. Password Depot takes on an appearance that makes it look like one of the new style Windows Explorer windows, it's a very detailed password manager that is slightly tricky to set up compared with some of the other services on offer elsewhere. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/TRBC/Password%20Managers/Password-Depot-420-90.jpg Once you have set up a file to save passwords into, the service runs outside the browser through a toolbar that pops up at the top of the screen. From here you can choose to visit sites already saved and Password Depot saves passwords by prompting you to record the information once you are on the site. After the 30-day trial it costs €29.95 (around £22, $34, or AU$44) to upgrade and that, by the looks of the website, gives you access to Password Depot until further notice, which is cheap although many will find it too complicated to justify the outlay. http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/4345b711/sc/4/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/218611609077/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4345b711/sc/4/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/218611609077/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4345b711/sc/4/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/218611609077/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4345b711/sc/4/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/218611609077/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4345b711/sc/4/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/218611609077/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4345b711/sc/4/a2t.img

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/mobile_phones/HTC/HTC_OneM8/Press/OneM8-Press-05-470-75.jpgThe LG G3 and HTC One M8 are the latest phones to get their Android 5.0 Lollipop, today on AT&T and T-Mobile, respectively. LG said in January that the G3's Lollipop update was coming soon, and HTC said much the same of the HTC One M8's at the end of last month, despite delays. Both updates have begun to arrive today for users on those carriers. Android Lollipop has been slow to roll out to many devices, but it recently cleared enough to at least make a blip on Google's Android usage statistics. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/DOWNLOADS/security/Eraser/Dotd-54-Eraser-470-75.jpgIf you're selling a computer, you need Eraser – it permanently deletes and overwrites and sensitive data you want to prevent falling into the wrong hands. Why you need itGetting rid of your old computer involves more than just selling it – you need to consider erasing your data to prevent it getting into the wrong hands. But simply putting it in the Recycle Bin won't cut it, as the data may still be recoverable. Instead, you'll need something heavy duty – something like Eraser. That's because deleting a file in Windows doesn't actually destroy the file, it merely severs the link between the file and the operating system. The file itself still exists until it is overwritten, meaning your sensitive data can be recovered further down the line. What Eraser does is overwrite these files several times, ensuring even the most tech-savvy intruder won't be able to find your private data. There's also a scheduler, so you can let Eraser get stuck in to large tasks while you're sleeping or working. This all means you can sell on your PC, safe in the knowledge that your private data is out of the reach of any unscrupulous buyer. With SupportAssist, the company’s new service, PC and tablet deployments are continuously monitored to predict and respond to device malfunctions. As part of Dell’s existing ProSupport Plus service - which is being extended to PCs and Tablets beyond Dell server, storage and networking tools - SupportAssist is designed to leverage embedded network technology that constantly oversees your organization’s devices to ensure continual uptime. In addition to proactive monitoring, ProSupport Plus provides clients with access to engineers in more than 66 countries and 55 languages. Coverage is also provided for drops, spills and electrical surges. Technical account managers Clients who have more than 1000 ProSupport Plus-covered devices will be provided with an account manager who will provide monthly reports detailing the health of computing deployments. “Today our portfolio consists of a base warranty and support that is reactive 24/7,” says Jim Roth , Dell’s Executive Director of the Support and Deployment Product Group. “You can talk to engineers and experts but it is reactive. When you have a failure someone has to identify the failure, contact the manufacturer, open the ticket and the talk to someone in tech support who will ask symptom-based questions.” With ProSupport Plus and SupportAssist, Roth says Dell clients will notify Dell technical support if and when a failure occurs. Technical support will then examine the data and call clients, rather than waiting for clients to contact Dell when problems occur. Pricing for ProSupport Plus will vary depending on your deployment region and the number of units you’ve deployed. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/software/Microsoft/Office%202016/powerpoint_office2016-470-75.jpgAll that's standing between you and Microsoft's Consumer Technical Preview for Office 2016 is an NDA. After launching an early, limited preview of the touch-optimized Office 2016 suite, Microsoft is opening up its program to allow anyone who agrees to a non-disclosure agreement the ability to download the software and test it before it goes on sale. "Anyone can access the bits under the terms of the NDA," Microsoft said in a response to an inquiry from ZDNet. "And what people are currently accessing is very early NDA preview." The productivity suite, a staple of many businesses for creating Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, and PowerPoint presentations, is slated to release in the latter half of this year. On smaller devices, like phones and sub-8-inch tablets, Office 2016 will be available for free. What's newIt may take a while for Microsoft to announce all the new Office 2016 features. Right now, the two notable new features for Office 2016 include a new Tell Me tool to help users get acquainted with Office and an automatic image-rotation feature. Tell Me is already available on Office Online and Office for iPad, and it's headed for Office 2016 for Windows. With Tell Me, users can ask the help assistant how to perform a task in Office. "There's also an automatic image-rotation feature to help users correctly position images in Office documents, the screenshots indicate, as well as a new 'black' theme option for Office users (in addition to the current light gray, dark gray and white themes)," ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley reported. Additionally, InfoPath will drop from the Office suite, making InfoPath 2013 the last release of the client. Microsoft, however, is extending support for InfoPath Forms Services to 2016. How to downloadIf you're interested in previewing Office 2016, you can head over to Microsoft's Connect site and sign up. The sign-up process asks you to enter the email where you'd like to receive an invitation to participate in the beta, but as Foley confirmed earlier, any email address will work. Just remember that what you're seeing and testing is under NDA. After entering your email address, you'll be able to download the necessary bits to install the preview on your system. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/logos/Beats%20Music-470-75.jpgApple is constantly working to improve iOS, but a forthcoming update may bring more than just bug fixes. Mark Gurman at 9to5Mac has it from sources that Apple is working on iOS 8.4 (duh) and may use the update to launch its Beats-based streaming music service. Plans are subject to change, but this is the course Apple is apparently considering at the moment. iOS 8.3 was seeded to developers earlier today, bringing wireless CarPlay support, new emojis and other improvements. With iOS 9 likely releasing in the fall, there's a good chance iOS 8.4 - and the new music service - will land sometime in the spring. Word broke last week that Apple was working on a new paid streaming service with Beats, one that could challenge Spotify and Google Play Music. The cloud-based service would live as a new app and replace the current Music app on iOS devices. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/events/wwdc/2014/screengrabs/ios-8-compatability-470-75.jpgWhen iOS 8 launched users everywhere complained of what a buggy mess it was, and Apple apparently is hoping to not repeat that mistake. That may seem obvious, but this rumor is more specific than vague hopes: Apple is focusing all its efforts on making sure the next version of iOS is stable over adding major new features, reports 9to5Mac. The sites compares it to 2009's OS X Snow Leopard update, which at the time focused successfully on stabilizing Apple's desktop and laptop platform. Stability firstThe last two iOS versions added a ton of new UI elements and features, from Apple Pay to the control center, but Apple isn't blind to the toll that's taken on the operating system, the site's sources said. As a result, iOS 9 will have a "huge" focus on bug fixes, stability improvements and performance boosts, they said, while Apple also tries to keep its size in GB down. The new iOS will still have some new features, but stability and performance will reportedly be the main selling points. And there probably aren't many Apple fans who will be too upset about that. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/DOWNLOADS/internet/Vivaldi/Vivaldi-470-75.jpgWeb browsers are a dime a dozen with so many browser add-ons and extensions slowing down how long it takes to get you onto webpages, something that Vivaldi eliminates. Why you need itWith security concerns and performance at the top of the agenda for most web users, downloading the likes Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox and their plethora of add-ons that place speed and battery life at a premium isn'y always the best plan. Vivaldi aims to minimise the need for extensions that can increase security risks and slow down performance by providing a number of nifty sidebar widgets that allow you to keep your contacts, email and notes all in one place. Making notes is one of the most revolutionary features that Vivaldi lays on as it allows you to make notes alongside the webpage you're reading and take a screenshot so that either can be copied into another program at a later stage. Another unique feature of Vivaldi is the way that it allows you to organise tabs. Users can choose to position tabs in the natural position at the top, along either side or at the bottom to the page. Tabs can also be stacked on top of one another so that you can stay in one browser window and benefit from a situation where it won't matter how many tabs are open as they will be neatly organised. Vivaldi is built on some of the newest web technologies around with a user interface created using JavaScript and React plus help from Node.js, Browserify and a range of other NPM modules to bring a browser that looks good and runs flawlessly. Like its rivals in the browser space, Vivaldi is completely free and is only currently available as a technical preview with a range of features such as mail, cross-device syncing, spatial navigation and a small number of extensions coming soon. Key featuresWorks on: PC, Mac, and Linux Versions: Free technical preview Tab stacks: Vivaldi's best feature is that it allows you to stack tabs on top of one another to tidy up all those open tabs and place them into easy-to-manage groups according to certain subjects. Notes: Take notes and screenshots on any webpage without having to leave Vivaldi itself before copying and pasting them elsewhere once you are done. Speed dial: Organise your favourite tabs into groups and then add groups to the speed dial screen to access your favourite web pages as quickly as possible.
