  1. Tyson Fury, the Gypsy King, is back in the ring today and this time he's taking on the undefeated German, Tom Schwarz, in none other than Las Vegas. The event should be as spectacular as you'd expect from this boxing showman and you can live stream Fury vs Schwarz as it happens - it's even FREE to do so in some areas. Tyson Fury (27-0-1) will represent the UK while Tom Schwarz (24-0-0) will be the front-man for Germany on the night. As you can see from those figures this is going to be a real-world show of what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object. The 30-year-old Fury stands taller at 6ft 9in and has more wins at 27 with a draw in there, too. But even that was a controversial 12-round split draw against WBC World Champion Deontay Wilder. Whereas Schwarz has the age advantage at 25 years-old but is shorter at 6ft 6in and also has less experience with 24 fights. He's won them all, but the list of defeated opponents is a lot less impressive than Tyson's. So will it be a foregone conclusion, or is this another Anthony Joshua-style upset in the making? Fury has always wanted to fight in Las Vegas and this, as his debut, should make for a very excited and focused performance. Fury has said: "I really love my job at the minute, more than I have ever done before. I used to think boxing was a chore, a job to go to. I trained hard for a fight and then put a ton of weight back on. Now I enjoy what I do, keep fit even when I am not boxing. I almost live my life as a routine training camp now." You can live stream Tyson Fury vs Tom Schwarz fight anywhere in the world using the guide below. The cost varies quite a lot over the world, with the UK hosting an expensive PPV that's undercut massively in the US by ESPN+ and even more by German channel MDR that has the whole thing absolutely FREE! http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/VgyagGS9HpAEPUQtUJBfrg.jpg Live stream Fury vs Schwarz from outside your countryIf you've been looking forward to this fight and already know where to watch, your plans may be scuppered if you're out of the country when it's on. That's because broadcasters geo-block their coverage if you try to watch from abroad. But there's a clever workaround for this, which is perfectly legal (assuming the broadcaster's Ts&Cs allow it) and it involves using a piece of software called a VPN - better that than trying to get some dodgy stream from Reddit. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/B9XNGCRYNHKJzN5zVfTMje.jpg How watch the Tyson Fury fight in the UKhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/x4WvmjGdnEUCFeqhMUrnWo.jpg Live stream Tyson Fury vs Tom Schwarz in the UShttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/bQMZ769ZSQ5kuZfBsM9ziW.jpg Watch the Fury vs Schwarz fight FREE in Germanyhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/D39crXd3gob7KPsE3LAFUo.jpg How to watch Fury vs Schwarz: Australia streamAt the time of writing, we can't see any evidence that the Tyson Fury and Tom Schwarz boxing behemoth will be shown at all. As a last resort, we suppose you could try downloading a VPN service and then signing up for an option from another country. We'll be sure to update this section if we hear anything differently. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/ebGZgkd4qVX7mUuvz3WNkH.jpg http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/digital-home/~4/ywGIqJ7Vdlo
  2. We might have caught our first glimpse at the Google Pixel 4 out in the wild, after a phone looking very similar to the one Google teased last week was spotted being used in London. An image of the phone was shared by 9to5Google – you can see the square rear camera array on the back and... that's about it. The snap doesn't really tell us anything new about Google's upcoming handset. The phone does appear to have a large front-facing bezel at the top of the display, the anonymous tipster who took the phone noted, which we think is going to be housing a dual-lens camera. Get the latest on 5G technologyNo fingerprint scanner on the Pixel 4The Huawei Mate X has been delayedAnd the handset looks as if it's wrapped up in one of those official Google Pixel fabric cases that we've seen appear with previous Pixel launches as well. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/7aRsaMPhpL3MfXWWC4wjnB.jpg Does this look like the Pixel 4 to you? (Image credit: 9to5Google) We're bracing ourselves for a host of Pixel 4 leaks between now and October, which is the month when we're expecting the next Google flagship to be officially announced. Even Google is getting involved with the leaks this time around, posting a photo of the upcoming handset on Twitter. The square design for the rear camera is now confirmed, though we're not sure yet exactly what kind of optics it's carrying. There has been talk of a "spectral sensor" on board the Pixel 4, which would be able to sense hand gestures above the phone, and possibly let users control the device without touching the screen. Apparently the phone is going to come carrying a Snapdragon 855 chipset and 6GB of RAM too, putting it on a par performance-wise with some of the best phones of 2019. We should get all the details in a few months. Here's everything we know about the Google Pixel 4 so farhttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/digital-home/~4/fORrS8oxOoo
  3. Having bounced back from their defeat against India with a solid win against Pakistan, Australia will today looking to consolidate their place amid the top four today Sri Lanka. No matter where you are in the world you can watch today's match by using our guide below to getting a Australia vs Sri Lanka live stream. Getting on the pitch will be a start for The Lions, with Sri Lanka having had their last two 2019 Cricket World Cup matches against Pakistan and Bangladesh abandoned without a single ball being bowled thanks to the less-than-glorious summer England is currently experiencing. It's been 11 days since they last played and they'll want to add to their four points which has them currently in mid-table. In the two games where they've actually made it on to the pitch, Sri Lanka suffered batting collapses that has seen them bowled out on both occasions. With one of those defeats coming at the hands of minnows Afghanistan, its looking like things could get brutal against Australia's more formidable bowling line up - anything but a routine victory for the Baggy Greens seems unlikely. It's a big match for both teams and you’ll be able to watch with ease from anywhere in the world if you follow our Australia vs Sri Lanka live stream guide below. 4. You’re probably on here because you’re asking yourself, “What is a Google Chromebook?” You’ve probably seen the term Chromebook thrown around on the internet, and you might be wondering what exactly they are, and how they differ from traditional laptops. In this guide, we’ll explain what a Chromebook is, list the pros and cons of these devices, and hopefully help you decide whether or not a Chromebook is the right device for you. And, when you do decide that it is, then head on over to our Should I Buy a Chromebook? and Best Chromebook guides for an in-depth buying advice on specific models. What is a Chromebook?Let’s begin with a quick overview: what is a Google Chromebook exactly? Generally speaking, Chromebooks are light and cheap laptops that run Google’s ChromeOS operating system. Most traditional laptops run on either the Windows 10 operating system or the macOS, if they’re Macs. Chromebooks, on the other hand, run on the ChromeO, a lightweight operating system that isn’t as fully featured as Windows 10 or macOS. In fact, when ChromeOS was first released in 2011, it was extremely bareboned, and you needed an internet connection to use apps such as Google Docs. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/sLiQ9yUqGcDHkHjNLsW7ce.jpg ChromeOS has evolved since then. Now install apps – including Android apps – and use it (to an extent) without an internet connection. However, it’s still more limited than Windows 10 and macOS. The fact that's it’s a lightweight operating system is one of the reasons why Chromebooks are so appealing to many users, in the first place. It doesn’t need powerful components to run, and it can use hardware that Windows 10 or macOS would struggle to run on, keeping the overhead price down. This enables Chromebooks to be much more affordable to users than other laptops. That also means Chromebooks have impressively long battery life, easily lasting a whole work day – plus, some movie watching – on a single charge. While we sometimes refer to the devices as ‘Google Chromebooks’, a number of major laptop manufacturers make Chromebooks. In fact, the first Chromebooks were released by Samsung and Acer in May 2011, and other manufacturers like Dell, HP and Asus joining have jumped on the bandwagon. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/a9xKmgx72vnucUnKmTApef.jpg Of course, Google has also released its own Chromebooks over the years. Interestingly, while most Chromebooks are affordable alternatives to Windows and Mac laptops, Google’s Chromebooks, like the Google Pixelbook, are premium devices that show that a Chromebook can be as powerful, and as beautifully designed, as any MacBook or Windows laptop – and also just as expensive, if not more. What software can a Google Chromebook run?Now that you know the answer to the question: what is a Google Chromebook?, let’s get into how it works. Because Chromebooks run ChromeOS, you can’t simply install and run Windows or Mac programs. Instead, you are limited to Chrome apps and online apps that you can run through the Chrome browser, such as Google Docs. The good news is that there’s a decent selection of Chrome apps. Plus, using online apps like Google Docs means you won’t need to install as many as apps, which is why many Chromebooks only need small hard drives – which again helps to keep their price low. Additionally, Chromebooks are now also able to run Android apps, giving Chromebook users access to thousands of apps through the Google Play Store. Most modern applications have a version for Android devices, which means Chromebooks users have a huge range of software, from office suites like Microsoft Office to photo editors and even games, at their disposal. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/eb584d466dc409ddc35990b2fa7dc0df.jpg Chromebooks can also run Linux applications, further bolstering the productivity benefits of the devices. Compatible Chromebooks can now use programs that were created for Linux, the open source desktop operating system. While ChromeOS used to be seen as a limited operating system, the scope of the software you can now run on a Chromebook is truly impressive, making it – now more than ever – a viable alternative for more users. Lastly, ChromeOS is a lot less prone to viruses and malware than Windows 10, as malicious users are more likely to attack Windows 10 devices due to their popularity. Using cloud-based services on a Chromebook also limits the number of files you download and install, and ChromeOS is automatically updated with the latest security patches to keep you safe and secure. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/gQoiKXfnbHnZVH99Zkw8kK.jpg Chromebooks and educationBecause of the affordability, long battery life and security of Chromebooks, they've become increasingly popular in the education sector. They're indeed ideal laptops for students, as they come with pretty much all the software they would need, including word processors and presentation programs. The use of cloud services such as Google Docs also allows for online collaboration between students and teachers, and several manufacturers have made Chromebooks that are specially designed for students, with durable bodies that can survive being tossed into a backpack and carried around all day. The Chrome Education License also enables schools to provide Chromebooks to students and easily manage the devices centrally, ensuring that only approved apps are installed. Most importantly, the parental controls these Chromebooks have on hand can also ensure that students are kept safe from inappropriate online content. So, to answer the question, 'What is a Google Chromebook?' Essentially, they're affordable laptops with simple designs, and they can surprise you with how flexible and adept they are for handling many day-to-day tasks. 8. During a recent AMA (Ask Me Anything) on Reddit, the Microsoft Edge Developer team answered user's questions about its browser and even offered some details on upcoming features. However, the biggest takeaway from the Q&A session was the fact that the company is open to the idea of creating a version of its browser for Linux. The Edge team explained that there are no technical limitations stopping them from releasing Edge for Linux but that they are not quite ready to do so yet, saying: How to use Microsoft Edge58 keyboard shortcuts for Microsoft Edge you must tryUpdate: You can now officially install Microsoft Edge on macOS"We don't have any technical blockers to keep us from creating Linux binaries, and it's definitely something we'd like to do down the road. That being said, there is still work to make them 'customer ready' (installer, updaters, user sync, bug fixes, etc.) and something we are proud to give to you, so we aren't quite ready to commit to the work just yet. Currently the Edge Developer team is working on bringing stable versions of the browser to other version of Windows as well as to macOS. Tracking ProtectionThe Edge developers also revealed the fact that Microsoft is planning on rolling out a Tracking Protection feature for its browser similar to one Mozilla introduced in Firefox 63, saying: "We are committed to building features that give users control and transparency over their privacy on the web. One of our first features is Tracking Prevention with 3 levels of control to choose from, with Balanced setting being the default." While Microsoft's team provided a lot of information on upcoming features, they still remained non-committal on their answer regarding how Chrome's upcoming extensions API could prevent current ad blockers from working. The company is still waiting on talks with “popular extension developers and with the Chromium community” before it gives a final answer on whether its browser will also cripple ad blockers as Google is planning to do with Chrome. 9. Update: Huawei has removed the lock screen ad wallpapers from its servers, which means it shouldn't be pushed out to any more handsets, but you'll need to manually remove it from your phone if you received the ad. The firm hasn't provided a reason as to why the ad appeared on handsets, but its statement (below) explains how you can remove it from your device. "Dear users, we thank you for your candid comments, we are sorry for the inconvenience caused to your experience. "Please kindly be informed that we have taken down those lock-screen images from our servers, as they should not be appearing on lock-screen interfaces. "For the image/s already downloaded to your phone, you may delete as per following: "1) When the image appears on the screen, slide up from the bottom edge of the screen, and the operation toolbar appears; "2) Click the "Delete" button and click "Remove" in the confirmation box which pops up. "We will continue to improve our services and brings you excellent user experience." Original story: Huawei has had a rough few months, and things appear to be getting worse as multiple reports across the web claim the Chinese manufacturer has now pushed ads to the lock screens of its phones without alerting users, or asking for permission. A number of disgruntled Huawei owners have taken to Twitter to voice their displeasure at being greeted with a 'Booking.com' logo on their lock screen wallpaper. It's not appearing on every handset, and it appears it's only the pre-installed background wallpapers which have the logo. If you opt for your own lock screen wallpaper, you shouldn't get the ad. The Huawei Ban: everything you need to know5G phones are here! The iPhone 11 could get a huge camera upgradeSo far, Huawei P30 Pro, P20 Pro, P20, P20 Lite and Honor 10 handset owners have reported seeing the ad, but the two Huawei P30 Pros in the TechRadar office are currently Booking.com-free - so it's certainly a sporadic issue. Why?So far, Huawei hasn't commented on the reports, so we don't know the exact reason for its actions - but money (unsurprisingly) could well be a key driver as it looks to generate new revenue in the wake of international uncertainty about its future in the smartphone market - at least in terms of using Android. We have contacted Huawei for a comment, and we'll update this article once we get a response. For now, you may want to change your lock screen wallpaper on your Huawei handset if you don't want to see an ad. 10. When Obsidian Entertainment revealed The Outer Worlds at E3 2018 it was hard to ignore the radioactive elephant in the room. A dystopian sci-fi RPG with dark humor and madcap characters? Bethesda's Fallout series immediately spring to mind. And that comparison wouldn't necessarily be wrong. After all, Obsidian Entertainment is the studio behind Fallout: New Vegas, arguably the series' most popular title. And, following the disappointment that was Fallout 76, there's most definitely a space in our library for a whacky new RPG. But has The Outer Worlds got what it takes to fill void left by Fallout? Following a hands off demo of The Outer Worlds at E3 2019, we sat down with senior narrative designer, Megan Starks, to discuss balancing dark themes, underlying politics and living in the shadow of Fallout. Corporations and capitalismhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/6PzKWW2pToDdfJ3g4vcRRM.jpg Image credit: Obsidian Entertainment We've been extremely excited for The Outer Worlds but recent history has dictated that often AAA titles don't end up containing what was labelled on the can. So, we were pleasantly surprised to find that Obsidian Entertainment seems to have gone above and beyond our expectations, creating a title that masterfully walks the line between cynical commentary on capitalism and humor. The overarching theme of The Outer Worlds is inherently bleak. Your character awakes from hibernation amidst a conspiracy to destroy Halycon – a colony residing at the edge of the galaxy driven by big-brand corporations. In The Outer Worlds, corporations are king and Obsidian take advantage of this to deliver comedy with a bite. A perfect example of this was showcased in the hands off demo: The mission you're given is to find a gentleman called Clive who runs the Boarstwurst canning factory. Boarstwurst, for those wondering, is a meat that's gathered from Cystypigs. As we discover on sneaking into Clive's factory, Cystypigs are oversized boars that grow disgusting pustules on their body. When those pustules are 'ripe' they are harvested for Boarwurst which is then canned. Yummy. Obsidian Entertainment seems to have gone above and beyond our expectations, creating a title that masterfully walks the line between cynical commentary on capitalism and humor. There's no denying the entire 'Slaughterhouse Clive' mission is offering some sort of commentary on animal farming practices, but it never feels like you're being force-fed a moral lesson. It's a comparable experience to Abe's Odyssey in that the tone of humor balances out these darker themes and never makes it feel like you're getting a lecture from the developers, rather it feels like Obsidian are poking fun at our capitalist culture. "I think it’s really interesting because the two game directors, Tim [Cain] and Leonard [boyarsky], represent each side of the humor," Starks tells us. "Tim has a lighter, quirky funny, Futurama style of humor and Leonard is very dark and almost philosophical in it. When the two come together it strikes a really good balance." Radioactive elephantshttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/QUFE5n7eQBybQFpbgY7DcU.jpg Image credit: Obsidian Entertainment However, Obsidian claims its not intentionally trying to deliver a political message and instead openly admit primary inspiration was drawn from the Fallout series. "Tim and Leonard wanted to create this new IP similar to Fallout - in the sense that it’s a dark apocalyptic world," Stark explains. "Here we wanted to create a future that is a slightly dystopian society. We thought 'what would be an interesting take on that but also funny?' and we just ran with that." It's refreshing that Obsidian doesn't hide the influence Fallout has had on The Outer Worlds, especially given that studios typically will go out of their way to argue against such things. But having Fallout as inspiration doesn't mean The Outer Worlds is a mere rehash - it stands as a game in its own right. While features such as perks, companions and combat feel particularly similar, it appears that Obsidian has taken the genre and ramped it up to 10 adding character flaws, more impactful choices and more in-depth characters. "I think what people are excited about with the game is - if you’re familiar with Obsidian games - we try to take it to the max."Megan Starks - Senior Narrative Designer "A lot of it is the setting and the humor for sure, it’s just that personality that you get with the game," Starks explains when we question what will set The Outer Worlds apart from Fallout. "I think what people are excited about with the game is - if you’re familiar with Obsidian games - we try to take it to the max. "The things you love about the games that we make, we want to provide to you in The Outer Worlds. It is very player-choice driven, we want a really rich story but everything you do has reactivity to it and you can play the way that you want to play whether that’s good, evil, psychopath, whether you want to side with the scientists and try to save the system or whether you want to join the board and reinforce their agenda or if you want to double-cross both of them and do a lone-wolf thing. "I think that’s part of it. The games people already like from the studio, you are going to get that same experience here. " Choice mattershttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/nHauBprFq4ck6Xmbb5To2V.jpg Image credit: Obsidian Entertainment In the demo we watched, Obsidian's branching narrative was definitely prominent. We'll come back to Clive's Slaughterhouse, as it's the perfect example. In this mission alone, several choices were presented. Firstly, do you choose to take the mission which involves usurping Clive for a ballsy lady called Catherine? The next option is how you approach getting into the slaughterhouse. Do you sneak? Go guns-blazing? Or maybe smart-talk your way in? But the biggest decision comes when you actually find Clive, a raccoon-eyed man who makes Hannibal Lecter look like a reasonable guy. Clive offers you a lifetime supply of Boarstwurst (remember, pustules) in return for bringing him Catherine's head. The choice you make will affect the entire game- and be ready for these choices a lot. "We do in every way try to have the game react to what you’re doing in the world."Megan Starks - Senior Narrative Designer "There are a lot of examples of choice from the highest level, like do you want to be the board or a scientist or neither?" Starks explains. "Even on a small level, say if I’m playing a dumb scientist character and I make certain choices in dialogue, other people will react to that and the dialogue will play out in different ways." Starks presented the example of Marauder-infested areas, which can be cleared out. If you choose to do so then you may find wildlife take over the area later in the game. Similarly other choices affect character reactions (including whether companions choose to abandon you), narrative and environment. "We do in every way try to have the game react to what you’re doing in the world," Starks explains. From what we've seen, The Outer Worlds looks like Obsidian Entertainment at peak form offering an tongue-in-cheek RPG that doesn't shy away from the grimmer aspects of our potential dystopian future. And we can't wait to get our hands on it. E3 2019 is the biggest gaming event of the year. 11. You have to give Rocket League a lot of credit – it pioneered a new wave of action sports games. Riding that wave is Roller Champions, a new free-to-play game from Ubisoft that blends the best of Rocket League with roller derby and it’s outstanding. The basic premise of the game is that two teams of three players work together to bring a ball around an arena one, two or three times before shooting into a hoop that’s hanging on the wall. The number of times you go around the track impacts how many points each goal is worth (either one, three or five points, respectively) and the first to five points wins. Preventing you from scoring, of course, is the other team of players, who'll try to tackle you and take the ball away. What makes this game special – and my new favorite PVP sports game – is that, besides being free-to-play, it’s easier to pick up and play than Rocket League. Beginners welcome, pros wantedWhile Rocket League really plays like a motorized soccer game where you use cars to push a ball from one end of the field to the other, Roller Champions is a bit like playing Tony Hawk's Pro Skater and basketball simultaneously. It's a wild combination that works surprisingly well – and, difficult as it may sound, it's actually much easier than Rocket League to pick up and play for new players. That's not to say Rocket League is hard per se, or impossible to master, but it's a game that starts off easy and very, very quickly becomes more difficult as you try to outmaneuver your opponents. Rocket League’s issue, and one I’ve always thought was holding it back, is that basic skills required to play the game – namely, passing and shooting – require extraordinary timing to pull off. Roller Champions eschews all that for a control scheme that you can largely pick up within the first minute. There’s pass, shoot and tackle, all of which are mapped to a single button. There are more complicated control mechanics here that will separate the novices from the pros like pumping (i.e. picking up speed when going down an incline) and dodging (which can be done when you're holding the ball) but the bare bones mechanics don’t require an extraordinarily high level of skill. It’s mechanics like those that will help Roller Champions foster a dedicated online community and, perhaps one day, a small eSports scene in the same vein as Rocket League. Until then, I’m totally fine for Roller Champions to be the English Football League to Rocket League’s Premier League. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/ALQCkocKeqkdWG5EVuYgMi.jpg Image Credit: Ubisoft The battle of the ballAnd look, on a very basic level, Roller Champions and Rocket League share a lot in common: they’re both three-on-three competitive games that have a similar aesthetic. They both task your team to work together to move the ball from Point A to Point B. And, most importantly, they let one person on your team (sometimes more) just be a total troll. That last part is an important aspect in both games. In Rocket League, having someone guard the goal is a pretty effective strategy – same as it is in Roller Champions. But Champions ramps the troll-meter up a bit by allowing you to tackle anyone on the other team at any point – whether they’re carrying the ball or not. Not only is tackling a lot easier to pull off in Roller Champions but it offers the same joyful feeling you got from playing NFL Blitz or NHL Hitz. The result can only be described as euphoria as you watch your opponent who, very likely didn’t see you coming, pick themselves up from the ground as you skate away. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/smZoBphbsJbyUGCri2RaBi.jpg Image Credit: Ubisoft Better with friends, but not bad by yourselfOK, admittedly that last bit might make me sound like a horrible troll who goes around griefing his opponents. I promise I don’t do that… often. Most of the time I’m focused on being a good teammate by setting up a block, passing a long ball down the track or taking a hit for the team. All of that coordination is obviously more fun (and more cohesive) when you’re playing with a friend. But the best part about Roller Champions being so easy to pick up and play is that it doesn’t matter as much who you get partnered with – it’s fairly easy to get back into a groove no matter who your teammates are. Rocket League, because of its high skill cap can be really intimidating for new players and frustrating for folks who want the best teammates – which, really isn't a lot of fun for either player. You'll still be able to out-maneuver and out-play your opponents once you get good at Roller Champions, but your teammates won’t be as bad, or rather, can’t be as bad as they are in Rocket League because of how easy the game is to control. For that reason, it’s the game we’ll switch over to when it comes to PC in 2020. E3 2019 is the biggest gaming event of the year. From today, O2 will be selling both the Apple Watch Series 3 and Apple Watch Series 4. Each will be the LTE variants, and there's no sign of the network selling the standard versions. It'll allow you to connect the Apple Watch with your existing phone contract on O2, or if you're switching to the network it's also available on a new contract too. An alternative providerThe Apple Watch 4 price is £14.50 a month, £20 upfront and the rolling internet plan costs £5 a month. You'll get the first six months of airtime free, but it's a 36 month contract, so you'll be paying for the next 30. Over that three year period, this deal for the Apple Watch 4 is set to cost you £692. The Apple Watch Series 3 is cheaper, and it has a similar deal with your first six months of airtime offered for free. The device is £9.99 a month, and its upfront cost is also £20. Again, this is only offered on a 36 month contract, which would end up costing you just under £530 over the lifetime of the device. 13. The US trade ban has taken an extensive toll on Huawei, with the Chinese phone manufacturer having to swiftly find an alternative to the Android mobile operating system it currently relies on due to Google being a US company. While the company has been reportedly working on its own Hongmeng operating system since 2012, the pressure has built considerably in recent months to present a finished and viable alternative to Android. Huawei ban: the global fallout explainedDo Androids dream of Hongmeng?Huawei representative Andrew Williamson has spoken of the readiness of this operating system in an interview in Mexcio City, stating that “it’s not something Huawei wants [...] but Hongmeng is being tested, mostly in China”. Williamson also claimed that he believes “it is already being rolled out over a million devices”, and Reuters has reported that Huawei has filed “Hongmeng” trademarks in the EU as well as multiple countries, including Canada, South Korea, New Zealand, Cambodia, and Peru. Huawei would obviously prefer to stick with Google’s Android system, and would put the brakes on the Hongmeng roll-out if the US Government’s decision is revoked, but its backup OS will be ready to launch “in months”, according to Williamson. Huawei's Android rival is incomingA Play Store by another nameOne of the major drawbacks Huawei would face from having to leave behind Google’s Android mobile OS is its loss of access to its Play Store and the vast collection of verified and trusted apps that come with it. The Chinese company has its own app store – Huawei AppGallery – but it currently doesn’t feature anything close to the range of apps as Google or Apple’s counterparts. As such, the company has reached out to developers that currently have apps on the Play Store, according to a leaked email shared with XDA Developers, in order to request they also publish their popular apps over in the AppGallery and help boost its catalogue. The email suggests that AppGallery has 560,000 developers currently in the community, and that the platform comes preloaded on every Huawei phone sold globally, reaching 270 million monthly active users. Huawei delays ambition to be world top smartphone vendorFCC complaintOn top of all this, the Chinese communications giant has also filed an official complaint with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regarding the banning of its network technologies on the grounds of national security. The letter claims that “banning particular vendors on grounds of ‘national security’ will actually do little or nothing to protect the security of America’s telecommunications networks. Rather, forcing network operators to rip out and replace their existing equipment would pose a greater threat to network stability and security.” Furthermore, Huawei claims that, despite its efforts, Federal Commissioners have refused to meet with company representatives in order to explain the accusations of threatening national security, and the Chinese company is “therefore handicapped to respond”. From today, Spotify Premium users with the latest version of the streaming music app may notice a refreshed and reimagined 'Your Library' section that's been designed to get you to your music and podcasts faster. Spotify Stations lands in the US, offering free curated playlistsSpotify is testing an Instagram-style Stories feature for artistsSpotify is testing a smart assistant speaker that fits in your carInstead of having your saved content housed on separate screens, which you had to do previously, Spotify's new streamlined library keeps everything on a single screen with Music and Podcasts split over two tabs – each with their own subsections. From there, users can either swipe back and forth through the tabs and subsections, or tap on them to access them directly. The Music tab holds Playlists, Artists and Albums, while the Podcasts tabs are split into Episodes, Downloads and Shows. Things changed, and that's the way it isYou'll also notice that Spotify has included a new playlist at the very top of the Playlists section called 'Liked Songs'. As the name would suggest, the playlist includes all the songs you've ever liked. Of course, entire albums that you've liked will also show up in this list, so it's probably best to listen to the Liked Songs playlist in Shuffle play mode. Additionally, the Episodes subsection under the Podcast tab has been designed to display shows you've already started listening to first, making it easier to resume where you left off, followed by quick access to the newest episodes of each podcast just below that. You can check out how the redesigned library works in the video below. The new simplified Your Library section on Spotify is rolling out now for both Android and iOS devices. As Russia looks to tighten its grip on the content its citizens can access online, a new bill could affect how Google and other search engines, VPN services and web resources operate in the country. Just as China's Great Firewall does, Russia too blocks access to prohibited content and the Russian search engine Yandex often omits certain search results from being seen by the country's users. However, Google has only recently started to do so and Russian consumers are growing increasingly aware of the fact that they can skirt the country's censorship by using a VPN. This is why a group of Duma deputies from Russia's lower house have proposed a bill which would impose fines of up to $77k on foreign services that further refuse to filter prohibited content in the country. What Russia will really test if it ‘unplugs’ from the internetRussia will block nine VPN providers imminentlyRussia blocks ProtonMailComply or be finedBack in March, the Kremlin's communication watchdog, Roskomnadzor, sent out letters to popular VPN providers informing them that their services would soon be blocked in Russia unless they complied with local laws. While most of the VPN services have refused to connect their services to the Federal State Information System (FGIS), only Kaspersky Secure Connection complied with the government's requests. An anonymous source provided further details on the proposed bill to the Russian news site Interfax, saying: "This bill will be an efficient mechanism of influence. It may affect such resources as Google and VPN services in the case of repeat refusal to filter.” The bill has yet to be signed into law but if it is, it could lead to more foreign tech companies pulling out of Russia over ethical concerns. Security researchers have discovered a critical flaw in the Evernote Web Clipper Chrome extension which could allow potential attackers to access a users' personal information from third party services online. The vulnerability, a Universal Cross-site Scripting (UXSS) referred to as CVE-2019-12592, was discovered by the security company Guardio as part of its ongoing security analysis efforts using a combination of its own internal technology and researchers. After the discovery, the firm immediately disclosed the vulnerability to Evernote and the note taking service quickly rolled out a complete fix in less than a week. How to fix Google ChromeGoogle boosts password security with Password Checkup Chrome extensionMicrosoft confirms Edge will be able to use Google Chrome ExtensionsHowever, due to the Evernote's widespread popularity, the issue could have potentially affected the 4.6m consumers and businesses that use its Chrome extension. Web Clipper extensionBefore Evernote fixed the issue, the logical coding error in the Web Clipper extension could have allowed an attacker to bypass Chrome's same origin policy which would have granted them code execution privileges in Iframes on other site's besides Evernote. Without Chrome's domain-isolation mechanisms, code could be executed that could allow an attacker to perform actions on the user's behalf as well as grant access to sensitive user information on affected third-party web pages and services including authentication, financial details, social media conversations, personal emails and more. Guardio's CTO Michael Vainshtein explained why browser extensions need to be scrutinized thoroughly, saying: "The vulnerability we discovered is a testament to the importance of scrutinizing browser extensions with extra care. People need to be aware that even the most trusted extensions can contain a pathway for attackers. All it takes is a single unsafe extension to compromise anything you do or store online. The Toronto Raptors were within a point of claiming their first ever NBA championship on Monday, but the Warriors survived and now bring their Canadian opponents back to Oakland for Game 6 in the 2019 NBA Finals. You’ve come to the right place if you're looking for a Raptors vs Warriors live stream. Keep reading and we’ll show you exactly how to watch the 2019 NBA Finals online wherever you happen to find yourself in the world. The Golden State Warriors, swept the Portland Trail Blazers 4-0 in the Western Conference Finals to advance to the final round. The Warriors are back in the Finals for the fifth straight season and the team will be shooting for their third title in a row. If they can pull it off, they’ll be the first team to three-peat since the Los Angeles Lakers pulled off the feat back in 2002. The likes of Steph Curry and Klay Thompson have come up big this series so far, but are the Warriors one Kevin Durant away from their very best? The one thing they have to focus on is the disappointment they felt when the Cleveland Cavaliers turned around a 3-1 deficit against the Warriors back in 2016. For the first time in franchise history, the Toronto Raptors have advanced to the NBA Finals. The team may have lost two games to the Milwaukee Bucks in the Eastern Conference Finals but thanks to a run led by Kawhi Leonard, the Raptors managed to earn themselves a spot in the Finals. He really is their key man and he'll be desperate to unlock an NBA Championship crown. And Serge Ibaka's display from the bench in Game 4 showed that the Raptors have strength in depth, too. 19. Pebble Beach is the fabulous setting of the 2019 US Open championship. The big question is whether Brooks Koepka be stopped after winning the last two editions of the US Open and coming off the back of an impressive PGA Championship victory. Koepka will certainly have a target on his back for 2019's third major. We'll tell you how to watch the highs and lows of the US Open from anywhere in the world - and there's even a FREE live stream to enjoy, too. And yet, despite Koepka's awesome major form and his standing as world number one, the bookies still somehow aren't making him the favorite for this one. It's the ever-threatening Dustin Johnson who's attracting the punters' cash ahead of this one - his only major win to date came at the 2016 US Open. Surely he's finally due another. But then another former champ Rory McIlroy will be fancying his chances, too, after destroying the competition at last weekend's Canadian Open and starting well at Pebble Beach. But what of the resurgent Tiger Woods? He completed his remarkable comeback trail by winning the US Masters in April. And his hunger for titles surely won't end there - he'll have fond memories of Pebble Beach as Tiger still has the record for the biggest ever winning margin in a major tournament at this very course at the 2000 US Open. Kevin Na and Patrick Cantlay have recent wins on the PGA Tour and could be decent outside picks for this one. While the likes of Jordan Spieth, Justin Rose, Rickie Fowler, Jon Rahm and Hideki Matsuyama will all inevitably be towards the top of the leaderboard by the time we get to the final round on Sunday. The great news is that you can see exactly how it will all play out - the birdies, the bogeys and everything in-between - for free, because the official US Open website will be hosting a live stream. The official tournament website, USOpen.com, will be live streaming some of the best action. But, it's very limited in what it can offer this week. The schedule currently says that it will be showing a US Open live stream of featured groups every single day, as well as shots at holes, 7, 8 and 17. That's great if you're only interested in following the players it selects for you, but not so good if you want full and proper coverage. Aside from the USOpen.com live stream, we have more US watching options below. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/VgyagGS9HpAEPUQtUJBfrg.jpg How to get a US Open live stream from outside your countryWe're going to guess that if you've landed on this page, you're going to want something more extensive than that free stream described above. For you, we have full details on which networks are showing the golf in the US, UK, Canada and Australia. Try to watch your domestic US Open coverage while out of the country however, and you'll soon be faced with a block. 20. Bluetooth has become an incredibly popular tool for connecting devices, whether it's the best smartwatches or the best wireless headphones. But, not all Bluetooth devices are created equal, and a new security update from Microsoft may break Bluetooth connection for some devices on Windows 10. Here's how to use Windows 10This is how to get the Windows 10 May 2019 UpdateThis is everything you need to know about the Windows 10 May 2019 UpdateThe new security update arrives in a number of Windows cumulative updates, including the update for June 2019. But, it goes beyond that, so it won't just be computers getting the latest major update that are affected. The security update and Bluetooth changes will effect Machines running even Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 12, as discovered by Windows Latest. The security update isn't breaking Bluetooth connections on accident, though. The change is intentional, and it aims to block potentially dangerous devices from connecting to Windows computers. What Windows is doing in this case is blocking connections from Bluetooth devices that use well-known encryption keys. You can find more details on all the affected updates from Microsoft here. What you can doIn most cases, this security update is not going to affect you. Popular Bluetooth devices from major manufacturers aren't likely to have launched with well-known encryption keys. And, in cases where they have, the companies may have updates available to remedy the issue. If a Bluetooth device you've attempted to connect can't connect, you can check in the Windows Event Log for an error to see if this update is the cause. The error will show up with "BTHUSB or BTHMINI" in the Event Source field, "22" in the Event ID, and "BTHPORT_DEBUG_LINK_KEY_NOT_ALLOWED" in the Name field. It will also include the Event Message Text: "Your Bluetooth device attempted to establish a debug connection. The Windows Bluetooth stack does not allow debug connection while it is not in the debug mode." If your device is not connecting because of this error, you can either try to update the Bluetooth device or roll back the update. The the other alternative is to replace the Bluetooth device itself. Since future updates of Windows are likely to keep this change to Bluetooth security, keeping insecure Bluetooth devices is likely a fraught option. 21. Consumers already pay a large monthly bill for both their home internet and mobile plans which is why Napster's co-creator Shawn Fanning, Sproutling founder Chris Bruce and Amir Haleem set out to develop a fee-free peer-to-peer network for internet of things (IoT) devices. Their company, Helium has released its IoT wireless hotspot to provide wireless connectivity to the internet through a blockchain-based incentives program. A single Helium Hotspot retails for $495 and can provide coverage to around 1/50 or 1/150 of a city according to the company's research. The device uses close to the same amount of power as an LED light bulb at 12 watts to provide wireless internet to nearby devices. Nokia wants to be the brains behind IoTHow to turn your Windows laptop into a wireless hotspotThe future of IoT connectivityThe Helium Hotsspot plugs into a user's home network and encrypts traffic from the device to the cloud using onboard blockchain technology to add and validate devices. Helium HotspotThe device can reach 200 times farther than conventional Wi-Fi routers as it uses the LongFi protocol and according to the company, just 50-100 hotspots are required to cover an entire city. Helium has also developed an Arm-based, battery-powered chip which can be attached to pet collars, water and air quality sensors and even ride-share scooters to provide them with an internet connection from nearby Helium Hotspots at a data transfer rate of 5 kilobits per second. By sharing their internet connection with these chips, Hotspot owners can earn free cryptocurrency which can help offset their initial investment. Each hotspot acts as a mining node within Helium's blockchain through a proof-of-coverage challenge-response protocol that is used to authenticate other devices on the network. The company's list of launch partners already contains some big names such as ride-sharing scooter company Lime and beverage company Nestle. At the same time, pet product company InvisiLeash is working together with Helium to build a line of connected pet products starting with collars. According to Helium, the company has already sold out 80 percent of its hotspots in its launch market of Austin, Texas and thousands of people have joined its global waiting list. 22. We've seen plenty about AMD Zen 2 recently, but word on the street is that AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3rd Generation processors (CPUs) will feature up to 64-cores and 128-threads. Now, right out of the gate: this is an unsubstantiated rumor from WccfTech, so you should take it with a giant grain of salt, no matter how exciting it is. Still, a 64-thread Threadripper processor may see the light of day in Q4 2019, or between October and December of this year. How will this beast compare to Intel Cascade Lake-X?If this processor is real, it'll spark up the AMD vs Intel war even moreThis might not be real – here are the best AMD processors that areThis would be earlier than we were previously expecting: we heard a while ago that AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3rd Generation processors would be delayed until early 2020. Still, it shouldn't be too surprising that the next generation of Threadripper would see core counts double, as that's exactly what happened with AMD Ryzen 3rd Generation back at E3 2019. This Wccftech leak also describes the next-generation X599 HEDT platform, which will support Threadripper processors up to 64-cores. This isn't terribly surprising either, but the rumor that next-generation Threadripper processors will still be supported by TR4 motherboards should make upgrading to these likely expensive processors easier. Either way, this is a very early leak, so we wouldn't expect to hear anything official from AMD about the next generation of Ryzen Threadripper for a while. The leaker mentions that these processors will be announced before CES 2020, so maybe we'll hear word of next-generation Threadripper at IFA 2019 – don't hold your breath, though. 23. One of IT’s biggest challenges across the enterprise today is getting feedback from employees that is useful and demonstrates how technology deployments are actually going. Most IT departments send out generic “how are we doing?” surveys via email, and unsurprisingly, they typically receive very few responses. With such a small amount of feedback, it’s impossible to get a view of what is actually going on, making these surveys almost useless. Despite the shortcomings of the majority of surveys, it is critical for IT teams to get a representative sampling of how their deployments are going so they can ensure employees are being empowered, not hindered, by new and existing technologies. There must be a better way to gather the critical feedback that IT teams desperately need to keep their employees’ digital experience high. I’m not suggesting IT teams should abandon surveys altogether, but they should abandon the traditional way of doing them. To that end, IT teams need to take a more engaging and personalized approach when collecting feedback to get the answers they need. In an enterprise setting, if IT departments adjust their surveys to follow the three key principles below, they will be able to collect a greater amount of actionable, valuable feedback and see far higher response rates. 5 ways to improve your IT department's workflowEmployees circumvent IT just to do their jobEmployees don't want work software on their personal devicesGet personal Make employees understand that you value their opinion by asking personalized questions to get their thoughts. Instead of sending out an email that broadly asks “how are we doing?” – you should pose specific questions along the lines of: “is issue X still happening with the new app?” or “are your emails being received and sent quicker with the new email provider?”. Obviously, it’s important to ask more than one yes/no question, but by being pointed in your inquiries, you demonstrate you care and are also able to get useful information that can help you improve current and future IT rollouts. Additionally, don’t overwhelm employees with 20 questions, keep the number of questions limited and focused to those that really matter. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/4tDEEwrFcqvbMuDu4CgTrW.jpg Image credit: Pexels Make the survey stand outIf everyone sends out surveys via email, people are likely to ignore them altogether. Make sure you get creative in how you engage with users for feedback to maximize response rates. This rule doesn’t just apply to external audiences, it should apply to internal ones as well. Is there a way to pop the questions up right on the employees’ desktops? Would there be better response rates if it was rolled out through the company’s internal messaging tool? Are you asking questions precisely when employees are experiencing things to ensure the feedback is timely and relevant? There isn’t a one size fits all model – IT should find what works for their environment and not be afraid of exploring multiple channels if they’re not getting the answers they need to improve. The idea sounds basic, but when put into the practice, simplicity becomes its power. If IT teams deploy surveys creatively and demonstrate that they care about the person they’re sending questions to, the answers are more likely to be useful and benefit the organization. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/WQQ5WCtCjskU5gpoEeaXBn.jpg Image credit: Pixabay Listen and act After IT teams conduct a survey and receive the responses, they must then put what they’ve learned into practice. IT needs to take the feedback and begin to implement changes, even if they are just incremental to begin with, so that employees truly feel listened to. By committing to making changes quickly, IT is proving to employees that the feedback loop is strong and for their benefit. This will in turn, encourage more employee participation in the future and result in not only a higher response rate, but employees will take more time answering the questions as well. When it comes time for your next technology rollout and there is a need for employee feedback that cuts to the core of how it is actually going, I encourage you to personalize and focus the survey, ensure you are asking relevant questions at the right time, and demonstrate where feedback has led to change in the past to keep the feedback loop moving. As you build the foundation of trust between IT and employees, the questions IT asks can be more complex and the answers employees provide will be more in depth. With these three things working in concert, enterprises will provide a far better digital experience for employees to help them to be more productive and effective for the business. 24. Ransomware has long been a menace for organizations and consumers. Global damage cost estimates reach about 10 billion USD per year. After all these years, why does ransomware continue to be so good at being so bad? The answer is a combination of the security industry's history of largely ineffective responses to ransomware and how ransomware developers use psychology to trick users into thinking they’re responding to requests from a colleague or even donating Bitcoins to a children’s charity. Ransomware is hardly new and unknown since it has been around since 1989. Yet it remains one of the most common and successful attack types. According to reports, there were over 180 million ransomware attacks in the first six months of 2018 alone. The adoption of cryptocurrencies and Tor have served to amplify the prevalence of ransomware dramatically. “Even with billions upon billions of dollars invested in cybersecurity and decades of companies deploying firewalls and antivirus solutions, ransomware still succeeds. Understanding why requires examining how the malware functions, and why our existing approaches to fighting it keep failing.” Why rapid recovery is key to minimising the ransomware threatHow to test anti-ransomware: This is how we do itMore than half of working adults don't know what ransomware isEvery 14 seconds, an organization somewhere in the world falls prey to a ransomware attack. But the bad actors are not narrow in their focus and typically target many organizations and users at once. For example, think back to the global WannaCry attack that resulted in losses of almost $4 billion. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/mX3W9KraGSUsScvjwiRudM.jpg Image credit: Pixabay How ransomware worksThe details of how one attack gets inside a system or an organization, i.e., its “attack vector” are irrelevant. It can be phishing, exposed RDP or any other avenue that ransomware developers leverage to get in. Instead, let’s take a look at what happens when ransomware actually interacts with your file system and encrypts data. First, ransomware process(es) locates the files it wants to encrypt. These are most often based on file extensions and target your most valuable assets such as Microsoft Office documents or photos, while leaving operating system files intact to ensure that system will still boot. Then the malware encrypts that data in memory and destroys the original file. One route ransomware takes is to save encrypted data into a new file and then delete the original. Another option, and probably the most devious one, is to write that encrypted data into the original file itself. In this case, the original file name is left intact, complicating the recovery by making it difficult to distinguish between encrypted files and those that haven’t been encrypted. A third method is for ransomware to create a new file like in the first option, but then instead of the delete operation use rename to replace the original file. After completing the encryption process, the infamous ransomware note is displayed. We know that part of the story quite well from the news coverage. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/NLTVNcPgigYaYdYR3znnPg.jpg Image credit: Pixabay Security industry falls shortNow that you have an understanding of how ransomware interacts with files to encrypt and destroy the originals, let’s examine the five most common solutions the security industry has developed to thwart these attacks. Unfortunately, none of them have proven to be consistently effective. First up: static file analysis - the same technique that’s used for malware detection in antivirus, anti-malware or EPP products. These products look for known malicious code behavior or sequences or strings such as lists of those commonly targeted file extensions as well as commonly used words that often appear in ransom notes (e.g., Bitcoin, encryption, etc.). It’s a signature- and machine learning-based method for detecting malicious code. There are some pros to this approach, including generating low false positive (FP) rates. It is uncommon for a signature-based antivirus to flag a benign file as malicious, and that’s critical because security professionals are overwhelmed by false alarms and suffering from alert fatigue. Another very important point is that this technique doesn’t wait for ransomware to execute, but stops the attack before execution so no harm is done and zero files are encrypted. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/AcYzKmNLhNMyHWJ4QaPV7U.jpg Image credit: Shutterstock However, static analysis has proven to be too easy for attackers to bypass. Malware writers use packers, crypters and other tools to obfuscate and change their signatures. It is well-known in the industry that efficacy of most modern antivirus and next gen antivirus solutions is somewhere around 50-80 percent, meaning up to half of attacks go undetected. The Nyotron Research Team recently conducted a study of the efficacy of leading antivirus tools and not against new, advanced attacks, but against old, known malware that has been around for years (and in some cases for decades). The various tests we performed include a simple modification of old malware to ever-so-slightly change its signature. The result: a dramatic reduction in detection efficacy, in some cases dropping to as low as 60 percent. Again, this is for old, known malware. A second technique relies on the blacklist of file extensions ransomware typically uses and gives to the files it encrypted. Benefits are similar to the prior technique - Low false positive rate and it may be able to stop ransomware encryption immediately, so no harm is done and no files are encrypted. However, it too is easy to bypass. The only thing ransomware needs to come up with is a new file extension or random file extension. For example, CryptXXX and Cryptowall variants used random extensions instead of a specific one. Alternatively, ransomware can keep the original file names along with the original extensions. A third technique is the use of so-called “honey pot files” to deceive attackers by baiting files and monitoring how attackers try to change them. Once they are touched, that’s considered an attack. However, it does have quite a few downsides, including: As other tools as well as users might touch those bait files, there is a chance for FPsAlso not all damage will be prevented, as many files will likely be encrypted until ransomware touches those decoy filesAnd of course, ransomware may simply attempt to avoid touching those file by skipping hidden files/folders, for example (those are the ones that tend to be decoys). The fourth detection technique is monitoring the file system for mass file operations such as rename, write, or delete within a certain period of time. If a defined threshold is exceeded, the offending process will be terminated. The benefit here is that it doesn’t rely on some specific signature or file extension, but rather on an abnormal activity typically associated with ransomware. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/ZvCgmxbGM8CuCM5X2o8ked.jpg Image credit: Unsplash However, some files will be encrypted until that defined limit is exceeded. Malware can also bypass this detection method by using a “low and slow approach” like adding delays between encryptions or by spawning multiple encryption processes. The fifth notable method is tracking file data change rate. The security product performs an entropy calculation to measure the randomness of data in a file. And like with the previous method, after a certain threshold of change is detected, that’s when the offending process will be deemed malicious and terminated. This method benefits from fewer FPs than previously mentioned dynamic techniques. Downsides include the fact that files will be encrypted until a level of confidence is reached, so not all damage is blocked. Additionally, this technique can be bypassed by encrypting only parts of files, or by encrypting in chunks. Additionally, using multiple processes for encryption can be an effective evasion technique. “Most modern security products attempt to leverage the combination of some or even most of these techniques in order to increase their efficacy with various degrees of success. But if we look at some of the more recent examples of ransomware in the wild, we see why none of these approaches have proven effective.” CryptoMix, or its latest variant DLL CryptoMix, isn’t overly spectacular as far as the technology itself, although it did bypass one of the leading antivirus products installed at our customer’s side. However, what sets CryptoMix apart is the approach attackers took to increase the likelihood their victims will pay ransom. They claim to be from a charity organization helping sick children, such as International Children Charity Organization. They even have profiles of real children in need, banking on the hope that victims will be more likely to pay if they think a percentage goes to charity. I assure you no money actually goes to any children. Diabolical! http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/P6nR5BjdpHEUspxkCwTxdc.jpg Image credit: Pixabay LockerGoga is the ransomware that stopped production at least one of the Norsk Hydro facilities resulting in a loss of an estimate $40 million. According to reports, Norsk Hydro actually had a next gen antivirus product installed, but LockerGoga was able to successfully evade it. It used the method of spawning multiple processes for encrypting files in order to bypass security products. That is, to ensure that even if one process touches bait files or gets terminated by a ransomware detection technique, others will continue to encrypt. At least one sample of LockerGoga even used a valid digital signature making it more trustworthy to static analysis techniques. Encryption itself was very slow, but possibly that’s exactly what allowed it to stay undetected long enough to cause significant havoc. Chimera is not a new ransomware, but it remains unique in its claim that if the victim doesn’t pay, the attackers will release sensitive data, including photos and videos, onto the Internet with your contact information. Whether they actually do it or not, depending on who you are and what data you possess, this can certainly encourage you to pay up. Of course, no list of ransomware is complete without WannaCry. Afterall, it’s probably the most famous ransomware as it impacted about 150 countries, hundreds of thousands of systems and resulted in the estimated $4 billion total economic loss. What makes WannaCry even more frustrating is that it was completely preventable. The only thing organizations had to do to stay safe was to be up to date with their operating systems and the latest patches. Microsoft released the patch against the underlying vulnerability almost two months prior to the attack. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/PoXGha32fbmx2NvgdKqeCh.jpg Image credit: Pixabay Defending against ransomwareWannaCry teaches a key lesson for all organizations: stay up to date with all patches. “Your organization may still struggle with basic asset management. In other words, you don’t know what you have. And if you don’t know what you have, how can you protect it?” Implement a solid backup strategy. You may already have one in place to guard your servers, whether on-premises or in the cloud. However, it’s important to realize your endpoints are also at risk because that’s where at least some of your company’s IP may reside. Finally, most security solutions and processes only chase “the bad” and that’s a game of cat-and-mouse you can’t win. There is practically an infinite number of malware in the wild, and it just takes one successful attack to cripple your IT systems. Complement your existing security layers with approach that does the exact opposite - ensuring what’s good. Note I use the word “complement.” I am not advocating for you to stop using your existing solutions. Although a single detection technique may not be very effective, the combination of a few provide some level of protection against commodity ransomware. Combine these tools with ones that track the good by applying a whitelisting-like approach. This not only creates a true defense in depth model, it also serves as that last line of defense against malware and ransomware that is able to evade your frontline defenses like antivirus. 25. Bird, a giant in the burgeoning electric scooter market, has bought smaller company Scoot, enabling its two-wheelers to return to the streets of San Francisco. The likes of Bird and Lime didn't endear themselves to the authorities when they flooded the city with so many scooters (without asking permission) that pedestrians were tripping over them. Are electric scooters legal? Know the law where you liveWould you swap your car for an electric scooter?Everything you need to know about electric vehiclesAfter receiving hundreds of complaints about scooters cluttering sidewalks, being ridden carelessly and without helmets, and generally being a nuisance, the city had enough. In April 2018, it decreed that all companies must seek a license before littering the streets with scooters. Twelve scooter suppliers submitted applications, but the authorities were tough and ultimately only handed permits to two smaller businesses: Skip and Scoot. Back to roostScoot, which has happily existed as part of San Francisco's transport system for six years, will keep operating under its own name in the city, but with its new parent company at the helm.
