  1. Sony has announced that PlayStation 4 users will finally be able to change their PlayStation Network Online ID. According to a blog post by Sony's Social Media Director, Sid Shuman, the "online ID change feature on PSN is officially launching to all PlayStation 4 owners later today". Read our Sony PS4 reviewThe best cheap PS4 bundles, deals, and prices this monthGot a 4K TV? Check out our PS4 Pro reviewYou'll also be able to change your online ID via a web browser later today (April 10 for the US and April 11 for Europe) – you'll simply need to sign in to your PlayStation Network account to do so. The feature appears to be set for release worldwide, but Sony hasn't announced official pricing in Australia yet. Sony says that "the change can only be made through a PS4 system or web browser", so you won't be able to do it on a PS3 or the soon to be discontinued PS Vita. Potential issuesSony says that the first time you change your ID the service is free, but after that you will need to pay $9.99 / £7.99 (around AU$15), unless you are PlayStation Plus member, in which case it will cost you $4.99 / £3.99 (around AU$7). Not all games will support the online ID change feature. Sony says while "all PS4 games originally published on or after April 1, 2018 have been developed to support the online ID change feature", it found an instance where a game "did not fully support the feature" during its beta preview program last year. Sony also warns that there are a few issues that could arise as a result of changing your online ID, saying you could "lose progress within games, including game saved data, leaderboard data, and progress towards Trophies". For this reason, the company has released a list of tested games that definitely support online ID changes, and says that reverting back to your old ID should resolve most issues that arise. 3. April and Autumn in general aren't usually the best time of year for finding discounts, but we've got a ripper for you today on the excellent Google Home Mini smart speaker. You can get Google's cheapest Google Assistant-powered speaker for just $59.95 at Mobileciti, saving you $20 on the normal price. Mobileciti has both the chalk grey and anthracite black models in stock as things stand. And with the Black Friday deals being so far away at this time of year, this might be your best bet if you want Google's smart speaker sooner rather than later. We wouldn't hold out much hope for a deal on Amazon Prime Day 2019 around July either as Amazon is still having a feud with Google, meaning the store doesn't stock Google Home products and prefers to push its own Amazon Echo Dot instead. Google Home Mini deal of the weekThe Google Home Mini voice-activated smart speaker offers fantastic value even at the standard $79.99, so we're all over the $59.95 offer. You can use the Home Mini to ask Google anything you can think of and the enormously powerful Google search-engine will usually come up with an answer that's read back for you. Footy and cricket scores, the weather, language translations, Spotify playback, local news, add things to your shopping list, set reminders - it's absolutely chockers with talent. 4. There's no need to deprive your burgeoning smart home until the Christmas deals season as you'll find the Google Home Mini price drops down from its £49 RRP numerous times throughout the year. And there's an excellent deal today as you can get a Google Home Mini for just £29 at John Lewis, saving £20 on last week's price. Google is keen to push its most popular and super affordable smart speaker at a cheaper price often enough, but you can almost guarantee it'll match any price drop on Amazon's rival device, the Echo Dot. And seeing as Amazon's Alexa-enabled smart speaker is on offer for £29.99, it's no surprise to see Google cheekily join the deals dance off. Google Home Mini deal of the weekJohn Lewis has both the chalk grey and anthracite black models in stock at this price. If you'd prefer the coral orange version it's on offer for the same price at Argos, albeit without the two-year guarantee. 5. There's no need to delay your steps into the world of smart home tech until the deals season rolls around again for the Holidays we've got a tempting Google Home Mini deal for you right now despite it being just another day in April - not usually a great time of year for deals. That's because Walmart has bundle that includes two Google Home Mini speakers for just $78, saving you $20 over buying them separately. This is especially handy as most people we speak to who bought a Home Mini, quickly bought another soon after. That's because they become super handy and you'll find yourself relying on their skills around the house - so it's nice to have a few so you don't have to shout while in another room. One for the living room and another for the bedroom? Or maybe the kitchen? Or you could pair them up in the same room for a fuller sound during music playback. It's simple enough to set them up as a pair for simultaneous music streaming via the Home app on your phone. 6. If you decide to dabble in the stock exchange you can simply buy shares directly through your bank. Alternatively, you can engage a dedicated broker who can negotiate better prices for you and make sure you’re getting the best deal possible. Cloud brokers operate in a similar way. Instead of stocks and bonds, they trade in measuring the performance of various cloud services and negotiating the very best rates. They can also assist with integration, which is very useful if you manage a large organisation. In this guide you’ll explore some of the very best cloud brokers on the market today. All of these can help you to list and manage existing cloud services and explore integration with new ones. We've also highlighted the best cloud storageWant your company or services to be added to this buyer’s guide? 7. Many Dragon Age fans are doubtless very much looking forward to the next instalment of the franchise, but maybe their enthusiasm will be dampened given the latest from the gaming grapevine, which seems to indicate that EA has switched course to model the RPG more along the lines of Anthem. This comes from Kotaku, in an interview concerning Bioware’s slow progress with Dragon Age 4 – it has, after all, been four and a half years since Dragon Age: Inquisition came out, and DA4 still languishes in early development. All we’ve seen regarding the next game is a very brief trailer which popped up last year, along with news that the title is likely to be a good couple of years away from fruition (at least). Sex is better than fiction in Dragon Age: InquisitionBest Anthem gear: how to customize your javelin's buildThe Division 2 shows Bioware how to make a looter shooterKotaku’s digging unearthed what many will likely find a somewhat disturbing picture of Dragon Age 4, in that apparently the original concept for the game has been abandoned in favor of a more monetization-centric Anthem approach. According to the article, the RPG is being built on Anthem’s codebase and tools, adopting a “live service component, built for long-term gameplay and revenue”. In other words, it’s more games-as-a-service, although not with a subscription, but rather with a steady drip of additional content and micro-transactions. That sounds very different to the previous vision the development team was reportedly working with, which saw Dragon Age 4 as a smaller game than the previous Inquisition outing, allowing it to focus more on being ‘hugely reactive’ to your actions, with there being choices and consequences aplenty. The overarching idea was to implement branching quests rather than simple fetch this or kill that affairs, and to have a game which was sophisticated and varied enough in terms of its branching to be played repeatedly. So the shift to the new scheme of things will naturally sound disappointing to many RPG fans, but we shouldn’t abandon all hope at this juncture. Live and let serviceAs mentioned, the game is still relatively early in development, so this vision could easily change, and some Bioware folks have already defended (some time ago) the fact that it will be a ‘live service’ game, or rather clarified what that will mean – see General Manager Casey Hudson’s tweet below. It seems many of the devs also insist that this isn’t simply going to be ‘Anthem with dragons’. Kotaku also observes that it’s likely to be an online game, naturally, although Dragon Age 4 may actually be delivered in the form of a single player experience, alongside a multiplayer facet, the latter of which would get the post-launch content and monetization attention. That would be far more palatable to many. All this is completely up in the air, of course, and the title is still evolving constantly, by all accounts – and indeed the report even specifically notes that the game could change based on the “negative reception to Anthem”. The current storm online regarding Kotaku’s piece may well, then, be contributing to the direction which the next instalment of Dragon Age takes. We hope it ends up being something more like the original vision described above, that’s for sure. We show you how to make money in Anthemhttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/digital-home/~4/wozlsP_wpOI

  9. Many people are aware of the need for a firewall on their personal computer, either as a standalone package or as part of an anti-virus or internet security suite. However, there has been both an increasing need and demand for something similar to protect websites and their users from similar malicious activity. The solution? A cloud-based firewall know as a Web Application Firewall (WAF). WAFs have become increasingly necessary due to various attacked vectors. These include Cross Site Scripting (XSS) attacked in which a malicious user or bot tries to leverage code executions in your database or scripting software to gain access to the underlying database, and so have a direct way into your server. Another known threat is Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacked, in which a botnet tries to flood a server or network with too much information for it to be able to handle, thus crashing the server and taking down your network and website presence with it. There are also other user-based attacks, such as phishing, credential stuffing, and clickjacking, in which malicious software comes into play between your visitor's browser and your website itself, allowing hackers to steal information that should be secure, such as passwords or even credit card information. These are all issues that Web Application Firewalls aim to prevent and protect against. However, a WAF should be invisible to users, so they will never know it's there. Usually, WAFs come with dynamic rules that are constantly updated to keep abreast of the latest threats, along with a backend dashboard to provide analytics of how it's working. There are a number of WAFs on the market, and here we'll look at some of the best available now. It was founded in 2009. The solution monitors the internet on a regular basis for any new updates such as attacks and vulnerabilities. Anything that is considered a threat to the majority of their clients automatically have WAF (Web application Firewalls) rules enabled. These will protect all internet properties. Constant updates ensure that CloudFlare’s protection is in place at all times. Cloudflare deals with a huge number of requests every hour with the solution identifying and blocking new threats. Due to their large customer base, the platform is able to rely on a collective intelligence when it comes to eradicating threats. This means that when one customer creates a new WAF rule, CloudFlare decides whether it applies to all other domains on their network. CloudFlare has a free tier. This includes unmetered mitigation of DDoS, global CDN, shared SSL certificate and 3 page rules. Additional rules can be purchased through CloudFlare’s dashboard. The ‘Pro’ package is $20 per month which includes Web application Firewall (WAF) with CloudFlare rulesets, mobile optimizations with Polish and 20 page rules. For $200 per month, the ‘Business’ plan comes with WAF with 25 custom rulesets, 50 page rules and custom SSL certificate upload. 10. The mobile industry and some governments are pushing the European Commission to reject proposals that would enshrine Wi-Fi as the industry standard for connected cars. The EU believes connected cars will make roads safer and vehicles more efficient but is concerned about the lack of cooperation within the industry. It hopes that by creating a series of approved technical specifications for a particular technology will inspire confidence among consumers, manufacturers and other stakeholders such as insurance companies, encouraging connected car adoption. EU could approve Wi-Fi for connected carsWhat is 5G?Why industry standards are neededEU connected carsHowever, the move to approve the Wi-Fi-based ‘ITS-G5’ standard ahead of the 5G-based ‘C-V2X’ is controversial. The EU’s view is that Wi-Fi is more readily available and could be used to improve road safety more rapidly than 5G, which will take time to rollout across member states. Mobile operators, equipment manufacturers and car makers are split between the two technologies, as are individual nations. Many fear that a move to approve Wi-Fi ahead of 5G will lead to compatibility issues in the future and want a technologically neutral approach. Volkswagen, Renault and NXP are among the supporters of ITS-G5, claiming it is better for time-critical communications such as crash avoidance and object navigation, while Ford, Daimler, Deutsche Telekom, Ericsson, Huawei, Intel, Qualcomm and Samsung are among those who back C-V2X. They argue that C-V2X supports a wider range of applications and is futureproof. The debate is significant because the market for connected car technology and services is expected to be worth billions of pounds a year. Indeed, it was one the most promising applications for 5G and the US and China is expected to back cellular over Wi-Fi. Mats Granryd, director general of the GSMA, has reportedly written to the European Parliament to argue that Wi-Fi is old technology that won’t make roads any safer. “This Wi-Fi standard was developed over a decade ago for the ITS-G5 framework. Despite being ready for many years, it has seen very little commercial deployment so far,” he is quoted as saying. The proposals have already been rejected by a committee of EU lawmakers and will be voted on in European parliament next week. 11. The rollout of 5G, the fifth generation of wireless technology networks, promises major advancements not only to our personal lives with tech like wearables, but also to many business sectors, including autonomous shipping and transportation, smart cities and the entire workforce. The 5G conversation often leads us to think about new applications for the Internet of Things (IoT), whether it’s consumer gadgets, smart refrigerators, enterprise businesses, AI-powered analytics or personal digital assistants. However, there is another side to this ultra-fast and powerful network that can open up new economic opportunities for cities, organizations and the individual worker. 5G has the potential to transform our rapidly-changing workforce by enabling near-universal employee inclusivity, increased engagement and heightened business efficiencies. 5G is poised to leave a lasting impact on the workforce as a whole, but perhaps most notably, it will democratize hiring opportunities for companies based outside of major tech hubs, and empower frontline workers, who are often left out of the corporate culture. 5G and a better-connected worldThe future of cybersecurity in a 5G-connected worldFive Eyes "needs major 5G vendor"Cities without top-of-the-line tech infrastructureNot all cities are created equal, at least from a communications infrastructure and connectivity standpoint. Major tech and innovation hubs like Silicon Valley, New York and Boston are able to accommodate a wealth of workers and companies because they were built with a modern IT and network infrastructure. 5G has the potential to rapidly update the internet “infrastructure” of any city by delivering immediate access to faster data speeds, more bandwidth and consistently reliable connections. This empowers companies to expand their footprint across more markets, recruit talent effectively anywhere, while providing more flexible work options for employees. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/hRCD8h5vXyRJAjwZMHxfs7.jpg Image Credit: Pexels The (evolving) labor marketIn addition to driving economic development and opening up new cities as potential corporate hubs for leading organizations, 5G will further accelerate the workforce’s move away from the traditional 9-to-5 work day. The "employ me" generation, categorized as those who prefer to work where and when they feel the most productive, is reaching critical mass in the workforce at a rapid rate. Our data shows that 89 percent of workers say flexible working should be how we work, not simply a benefit. With the technical ability to work from a location of their choice, companies empower their employees with the flexibility they seek, and in turn, can make tangible improvements to employee engagement and business efficiency, resulting in higher rates of productivity and employee retention. This is great news for executives looking to boost their bottom line, but it also dramatically expands the pool of potential new employees. Organizations can now look to hire the best worker - regardless of where they are based - instead of the worker that is based in their headquarter’s city or trying to drive top talent towards urban areas. Workers on the front lineBeyond democratizing cities, 5G has the power to democratize opportunities for workers of all backgrounds and industries. When adopting new 5G-powered applications, company leaders should not only focus on the potential business impact, but also on how the tech will affect their culture. For companies with frontline workers, those who deal directly with customers or are directly involved in making a product, a major challenge is keeping those employees engaged and connected to the larger organization. For example, the trucking industry deals with a high level of turnover due to challenges with communication as the drivers make cross-country trips. For these distributed workers, 5G combined with communications technology opens the door for a stronger connection to the company while also allowing for richer communication and collaboration amongst their peers and their base office. These new opportunities have historically not been possible with the legacy tools and processes used by most companies today. For other frontline workers dealing directly with customers, patients or vendors, 5G’s reliable connectivity ensures that workers can connect to their partner network while on-the-go. Instead of being chained to a desk, or only able to work in optimal locations, workers are enabled to better utilize smartphones and tablets to accomplish the same work that is traditionally done on a laptop or desktop computer, at the “speed of reaction.” Like most of the industries it will support, 5G is focused on working better, faster and smarter. It won’t only provide technical improvements like greater reliability and lower latency; it has the potential to have a much larger workforce-wide impact. As we think about the next wave of our economy and the future of work, 5G represents a technological milestone on par with AI and IoT in terms of its impact on the way we empower the next generation of digital workers. 12. SSE Enterprise Telecoms has launched a new fibre backhaul service that allows smaller ISPs to ‘virtually’ unbundle Openreach exchanges. Unbundling allows service providers to gain more control over the connection by installing their own equipment in the exchange. However, SSE believes this is prohibitively expensive for smaller ISPs, restricting their ability to expand services. SSE unbundles BT exchangesThree futureproofs networkOpenreach connects 1.2m properties to FTTPSSE Enterprise TelecomsSSE’s nationwide network comprises 14,000km of fibre, while it reached a deal to unbundle more than 700 Openreach exchanges last year – the move doubled SSE’s reach, adding 180,000 business postcodes. The new service, called Scalefast FTTC, will allow customers to access 733 exchanges (179 parent exchanges and 554 child exchanges) across the country, offering a pay-as-you-go model. Billing is based on the amount of data that passes through each exchange. This, SSE claims, will allow ISPs to expand into new areas more rapidly and to take new customer orders within three months. “Scalefast FTTC is a solution that gives customers the ability to virtually unbundle BT Openreach exchanges at very little capital or operational cost,” said Colin Sempill, Managing Director, SSE Enterprise Telecoms. “We’re able to roll out this disruptive solution due to our ability to deliver competitive reach and pricing thanks to our Edge expansion programme and our continued commitment to connectivity excellence. With this high capacity core network and backhaul, businesses and consumers will be better-placed to utilise FTTC broadband services via ISPs.” SSE has helped Three to futureproof its infrastructure ahead of its 5G launch later this year. SSE’s fibre network has improved backhaul between Three’s mobile sites and 20 data centres dotted around the country, lowering latency. 13. Google is planning to produce more laptops and tablets along the lines of the Pixelbook and Pixel Slate soon enough, the company has confirmed, contrary to previous chatter on the grapevine which suggested that these products had been canned, at least for the time being. Recently we heard from anonymous sources who spoke to Business Insider and imparted the information that staff were being temporarily shifted away from the Google Create division, which is responsible for pushing out products like the Pixelbook and Pixel Slate, and therefore that any such hardware in development had likely been shelved. However, Google has now told The Verge that this hardware division does in fact have new notebooks and tablets in the pipeline. Read up on Google FuchsiaShould I buy a 2-in-1 laptop?Google Stadia: A game platform for everyone, anywhereWhat would those products be? Google wouldn’t elaborate, beyond acknowledging the existence of the hardware – which is hardly unusual, and indeed said devices may still be at a relatively early stage. This is backed up by a report from 9 to 5 Google, which notes that at Cloud Next 2019, Google ran a session on ‘Google Hardware for Business’, where it mentioned new devices on the way that did things differently to the Pixelbook and Pixel Slate, and would push forward on the working-on-the-move front. So it would seem Google is eyeing the business world with these devices, although of course, that doesn’t mean consumers won’t be able to buy and use them. Google noted that through a business lens, the Pixelbook was aimed at business ‘leaders’ such as executives or IT workers, and that the Pixel Slate was targeted largely at sales reps and customer-facing staff. Apparently the new device, whatever it may end up being called, is aimed at those operating “constantly on the go that have a working paradigm where 60% of them – and this is all of our [Google] employees – are working outside of their desk” (including working remotely, of course). Steve Jacobs, Lead Product Manager for the Pixelbook Group, further clarified: “We think there’s some unique things we can do differently than the Pixelbook and Pixel Slate that are going to really help give [employees] what they’re looking for when they’re working in this new modern cloud-first era.” Unique take?We can but guess at the exact nature of such a device, but it goes without saying that it will doubtless be highly portable, likely with a decent raft of security measures if it’s going to be a laptop/tablet used by employees when out and about. Some chatter has speculated that it might use Fuchsia – Google’s planned convergence of Android and Chrome OS, according to the rumor mill – but that doesn’t seem too likely given that Fuchsia is reportedly a long way down the line (maybe five years), and we expect this new Pixel hardware to emerge sooner than that, given the way Google is talking. Whatever happens, Google is likely to want to make a move away from what it did with the Pixel Slate, as the 2-in-1 device wasn't particularly well received, and we found it a rather perplexing piece of hardware in terms of how it was pitched and priced. Foldable phones are finally a reality, with the likes of the Samsung Galaxy Fold announced and soon going on sale, but LG could be going one better, as the company has patented a handset that’s not just foldable but also transparent. The patent, which was published on April 9 and spotted by LetsGoDigital, details a device with two transparent screens and a fold in the middle, so it opens and closes like a book and moves from tablet-sized when open to phone-sized when closed. However, each screen is double-sided and because it’s transparent you can even interact with the display from the rear. There are lots of 5G phones coming tooEverything you need to know about the Galaxy FoldA number of folding phones could land this yearhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/A2TaJfVRa8XSyPebi4ftHf.jpg Image credit: LG / LetsGoDigital The two screens can be used as one large one, displaying the same content, or independently, so you could have different apps running on each. And the level of transparency can vary depending on how you hold the phone. If you sit it flat then it’s only slightly see-through, but held up higher it becomes more so. It’s an innovative idea and one which goes into quite a lot of detail, with the patent even going so far as to talk about the camera, which would involve both a single-lens on the front and a multi-lens one on the back, complete with a laser sensor that could see objects in 3D, presumably to help with depth sensing. Don’t get too excited though, as we suspect a device like this is a long way from being launched. Patents don’t always turn into products and we were seeing foldable phone patents for many years before any such handsets launched. This could be the big next step for phones though, and it’s not just LG toying with such a device. Sony for example has also patented a transparent, foldable phone. As Phys.org reports, Georgia claims to be the first nation to master winemaking, and a group of researchers and entrepreneurs from the country are hard at work cultivating grape varieties that might survive on Mars. "Georgians were the first winemakers on Earth and now we hope to pioneer viticulture on the planet next door," the project's co-founder Nikoloz Doborjginidze explained. Are we getting closer to finding Planet Nine?Buzz Aldrin on how you'll 'get your ass to Mars'Take a virtual tour of the closest thing to Mars on EarthThe project follows a call to the public from NASA, seeking ideas to a "sustained human presence" on Mars. Terraforming One of the biggest challenges for would-be winemakers is the planet's infertile soil (as anyone who watched Matt Damon struggle to cultivate potatoes in 2015 film The Martian will recall). The Georgian team are hoping to overcome this hurdle using soil bacteria from parts of the country with 'extreme ecosystems' like hot springs, then cultivate these so they can survive on the red planet. They are also looking at Georgian grape varieties to determine which might be able to withstand the high levels of UV radiation that the vines would be exposed to. The next step will involve testing grape varieties in simulated Martian conditions, with bitterly cold temperatures, high levels of carbon dioxide, and low pressure. "Martian dreams aside, our experiments are providing information that is vital as humanity confronts a multitude of environmental challenges," said Nino Enukidze, dean of Business and Technology University at Silicon Valley Tbilisi. 18. When you're browsing the internet, there are plenty of things you don't want to have happen. You probably don't want a sketchy website to identify and track you. And, you definitely don't want a webpage to use your computer's hardware and electricity to mine cryptocurrency that you don't get any cut of. Mozilla is tackling those issues with a new security tool in the Firefox browser. While the new security tools aren't here for the wide-release version of Firefox yet, they've both launched on Firefox Nightly 68 and Firefox Beta 67. They are not enabled by default, but Mozilla plans to eventually have them turned on automatically in all versions of Firefox. What and howThe new security tools aim to block scripts on websites that can identify your computers hardware or use that hardware to mine cryptocurrency. In the case of fingerprinting, scripts can identify the hardware in your computer and device configuration information to create an identifier for you that is independent of cookies. In other words, clearing the cookies from your browsers won't trick the sites, since they'd be able to check your computer's details again using the scripts and recognize it from the previous visit. Cryptojacking scripts, meanwhile, can be detrimental to your online experience, as they'll use your computer's processing power (and your battery or electricity), to mine cryptocurrency. This can be harmful to your computer while also slowing down performance of other tasks. Firefox's new security tool works by blocking these scripts. Mozilla has worked together with Disconnect to identify domains that serve these fingerprinting and cryoptojacking scripts. So, if they are detected, Firefox's Content Blocking protections will stop them from running. You can enable these security tools in Firefox Nightly 68 and Beta 67 by going to the Firefox main menu > Preferences > Privacy ad Security, selecting Custom under Content Blocking, and checking Cryptominers and Fingerprinters. The messaging service is getting a new Outlook calendar and mail app, an updated OneDrive app and users will now be able to preview Office files directly within Slack. The company is making it easier to keep track of all your meetings and calendar invites by bringing them into Slack through the new Outlook calendar app. Users will receive a message when a meeting invite arrives and they will even be able to respond with just one click. Deeper integrationSlack users can now bring emails right into their channels thanks to the addition of Outlook mail integration. They will even be able to forward emails directly from Outlook into a Slack channel with the new Outlook add-in. Importing files from Microsoft's cloud storage service will also be possible as a result of an update to Slack's OneDrive app. This functionality is similar to the company's existing Dropbox and Google Drive integration which allows users to browse files and add them into a channel or direct message. Working with Office documents will now be easier in Slack as the company is enabling full previews of PowerPoint slides, Word documents and Excel spreadsheets. These files can be previewed without having to open them and the firm hopes to bring this functionality to OneDrive files as well. While Microsoft Teams has been gaining ground in its fight against Slack, many businesses often rely on both products for their workloads. By offering greater integration with Microsoft's products, Slack is giving its users another reason to continue using its platform as opposed to searching for an alternative. 20. The Huawei P30 and P30 Pro have impressed us with their photography prowess, but later this year it won't just be the flagship phones boasting impressive zoom features. Smartphone SoC (system-on-chip) maker Qualcomm has just announced its latest chips, with the Snapdragon 655 and Snapdragon 730 ready to power the next generation of mid-range handsets. They come with the usual generational boosts in performance and graphics, while upping support for screen sizes and resolutions, but the two new chips also come packed with a host of photography goodies. Check out the best camera phones aroundThe iPhone 11 is likely to see camera enhancementsAs is the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 later this yearOne of the most eye-catching of which is support on the Snapdragon 655 for a 5x optical zoom - a feature found on the Huawei P30 range, and one which has impressed us in our reviews. The chip can also support triple camera setups with telephoto, wide and ultra-wide lenses and a single sensor up to 48MP in size, providing manufacturers with a host of photography flexibility. An enhanced, third-generation AI engine also delivers 3D Face Unlock, Object Detection, Portrait Mode and Low Light Night Mode - although all these features will have to be hand-selected by manufacturers, so don't expect all of them to be packed into one mid-range device. One thing the Snapdragon 655 doesn't support, however, is 5G connectivity, with the chip settling for 4G LTE speeds of up to 600Mbps download and 150Mbps upload. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/WCUp2teWZSQdiVB3qvTVjN.jpg Image Credit: Qualcomm 192MP snapshot cameraThe Snapdragon 730 is a more powerful chipset, with the ability to deliver a 192MP snapshot image, or a 48MP image with multi-frame noise reduction. Phones with the 730 at their core will also have the ability to deliver a high-class video recording experience, with support for 4K HDR with a real-time bokeh effect. There's more advanced AI here too, with Qualcomm's fourth-generation engine providing enhancements to photography, gaming, voice control and security. Improvements to the voice assistant aspect could be marked, with Qualcomm claiming devices will be able to pick your voice up from further away, with enhanced accuracy and support for multiple keywords providing greater range when it comes to selecting a 'wake word' to activate the assistant. There is a third new chipset too, the Snapdragon 730G, which is specifically geared towards gaming, offering elite gaming features and 15% faster graphics rendering versus the standard 730. Support includes optimization for top games, faster rendering, anti-cheat extensions, Wi-Fi latency manager and HDR gaming. The first Snapdragon 655 smartphones are expected to arrive very soon (in Q2, so April-June) while the first Snapdragon 730 and 730G devices are set to land from the middle of 2019. Bitcoin mining requires a great deal of resources which is why China's state planner is considering a ban on the practice according to a recent draft list of industrial activities the agency is trying to eliminate. The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) is currently seeking public opinions on a revised list of industries it wants to either encourage, restrict or eliminate. In total, the NDRC's draft for a revised list contains more than 450 activities, including cryptocurrency mining, that the government agency believes should be phased out for being unsafe, wasting resources, polluting the environment or not adhering to local laws and regulations. How to mine bitcoin and other cryptocurrenciesThe 10th anniversary of Bitcoin: trick or treat? Here's how to keep your Bitcoin safeThe commission has not proposed a target date or even put forward a plan for when it wants to eliminate Bitcoin mining which suggests that the practice should be phased out immediately. The Chinese public on the other hand has until May 7 to comment on the draft before it's finalized. Chinese crackdownSince 2017, the cryptocurrency sector has faced heavy scrutiny in China when regulators first began to ban initial coin offerings as well as shut down local cryptocurrency trading exchanges. The country also began to limit cryptocurrency mining due to the high amounts of electricity it requires which forced many of the world's largest firms to set up shop elsewhere. A ban on cryptocurrency mining in China would likely cut off a key supply of cheap electricity for the industry and raise the average cost required to mine Bitcoin. In addition to mining Bitcoin, Chinese companies are also some of the world's biggest manufacturers of Bitcoin mining gear and systems. In a blog post, chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg announced that Facebook would be making the following updates: "a new tributes section for memorialized accounts; additional controls for people who manage memorialized accounts; and improved AI to keep the profile of a deceased loved one from appearing in painful ways". How to delete FacebookThe best encrypted messaging apps for AndroidFacebook pulls back the curtain on its newsfeed algorithm Facebook introduced the ability to memorialize accounts as "a way for people on Facebook to remember and celebrate those who've passed away", and it allows friends and family to see content the deceased person shared while making it clear that they are no longer alive by adding the word 'Remembering' in front of their name. The blog post specifically mentioned that Facebook is trying to get "better and faster" at stopping memorialized profiles "showing up in places that might cause distress, like recommending that person be invited to events or sending a birthday reminder to their friends". http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/GH5hDWD4ZAmQw2xUEPr3A.jpg Image credit: Facebook Digital afterlifeFacebook has also introduced a new 'Tributes' section to memorialized profiles, "a separate tab on memorialized profiles where friends and family can share posts — all while preserving the original timeline of their loved one". As well as that, legacy contacts – a friend or family member entrusted to look after a user's Facebook profile after their death – have been given new controls, which allow them to "moderate the posts shared to the new tributes section by changing tagging settings, removing tags and editing who can post and see posts". Sandberg says that this means that legacy contacts can hide "posts that might be hard for friends and family to see if they’re not ready" from these people specifically. She goes on to say that, while minors can't select a legacy contact, Facebook has "recently changed [its] policies to let parents who have lost children under 18 to request to become their legacy contact". Facebook has been criticized in the past for not allowing bereaved parents have access to their children's accounts. After months of waiting, Fortnite is finally on both iOS and Android, though you'll need a phone that can actually run the game. iOS users can download straight from the App Store. As long as you're using iOS 11 on iPhone 6S/SE, iPad Mini 4, iPad Air 2, iPad 2017, iPad Pro devices or later you'll be fine. Oh, and you'll need an internet connection, naturally. Fortnite also hit Android phones this summer, and finally came out of beta in October. You can see the full list of phones – and how to find the Fortnite Installer – on our Fortnite on Android page. Is it the full game? It is the full Fortnite game. There are some small differences: it’s not quite as visually impressive as it is on more powerful devices, the controls are touchscreen, and a lot of audio cues have been made visual so you can play comfortably in public without the need for headphones. But you won’t be missing out on any key features. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/6ssUTMmgPEXNZYPwRwRymY.jpg What's the deal with cross-play? A sweet deal is what it is. While previously Xbox One and PS4 owners couldn't play the game together, Sony's U-turn on the matter means that now everyone across Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android can all take part in the crossfire. So if you've got friends that prefer PC, others that prefer console and you're off on holiday with your mobile, that's no reason for the fun to stop. There's also cross-progression. So, if you're logged into your Fortnite account on mobile and you later log into your console to play there, everything you did on mobile later that day is carried over. Sounds great, how do I get it? We have a guide on how to get Fortnite on mobile on TechRadar and we're constantly updating it with the latest rollout news. If your device isn't there yet, keep checking back and one day it probably will be. What's a Fortnite Battle Pass? The Battle Pass is a purchasable item in Fortnite that gives you access to exclusive in-game rewards. As players complete daily challenges and level up their rank, they earn Battle Stars which can then be used to unlock Tiers in their Battle Pass. Each new Tier you unlock will bring both Free and Premium rewards. The Tiers vary from season to season but in season three you get around 100 items in each Battle Pass which can take anywhere between 75 and 150 hours of play to unlock. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/wQponfSqjuPXs9KMghiZoB.jpg Everyone that has a Battle Pass will get the Free reward they unlock, but only Premium Pass holders will get the Premium reward. Battle Pass Premium can only be purchased with in-game V bucks and not with real money. You can purchase a Battle Pass for around £7/$10 in the Battle Pass tab of the game’s menu. Twitch Prime benefits Those who use Twitch Prime and play Fortnite will be glad to know that they have access to free loot right now. Those with a Prime account can claim the Fortnite Twitch Prime Pack and the Fortnite Twitch Prime Pack 2 which include a host of cosmetic items and are available across all platforms. The first pack includes two exclusive gliders and outfits: the Havoc Outfit and Back Bling, plus the Sub Commander Outfit and Slipstream Glider. The second pack contains three exclusive items for Fortnite’s Battle Royale mode including the camouflage-heavy Trailblazer Outfit, the True North Back Bling, and the Tenderizer Pickaxe. There’s also a brand new dance emote for those that like the dance floor as much as the battleground. The packs can only be claimed on a single platform, but they can be shared across PC/console and mobile as long as you use the same Epic account across these platforms. You can’t however, share your loot across PS4 and Xbox One even if you are using the same Epic account. (Image credits: Epic Games) Sick of getting schooled in Fortnite?
