  1. Welcome to TechRadar's first week dedicated to space exploration. 2019 is an exciting time for astronomy and space travel, with private companies pushing extraterrestrial travel to new levels, and space tourism finally becoming more than just a fantasy. The stars have never been so close, so we've decided to spend a whole week looking at the technology that's making the universe a smaller place. For seven days we'll be boldly going throughout our solar system and beyond, and showing ways you can get involved and indulge your curiosity. What's coming upWe'll look past Pluto and ask whether there's a Planet Nine in our solar system, explore the technology that's keeping astronauts sane on long voyages, and take a look at some audacious new ideas for space exploration. Closer to home, we'll be showing you how to take great photographs of the moon, the Milky Way and the International Space Station, and sharing our guide to the best astronomy software for surfing the stars from your desktop. Throughout the week, we'll also be keeping you up to date with all the latest news from the world of space travel and exploration. We'll be posting each day's highlights on this page, so add it to your bookmarks and strap in – it's going to be a wild ride. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/WeAzGVGa9HsyWbpcPmS5Ph.jpg http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/9zi85AT8tURH5C2fwZs996.jpg Look out for this button. It'll take you back to this page, where you'll find links to all the week's news, features and tutorials as they're published. http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/digital-home/~4/JUKZp8NsM1w
  2. Planets come and go. Remember Pluto? It was the bona fide ninth planet from its discovery in 1930 until its controversial demotion to dwarf planet status in 2006. It's now just one of five dwarf planets in our solar system, the others being Ceres, Haumea, Makemake, and Eris. Semantics aside, the only way we'll get a ninth planet is if astronomers find a new one. Astonishingly, that's exactly what could happen in the next few years, and there's already new evidence that a hypothetical Planet Nine could actually exist. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/KMVVAyNBwxRtbTBz74fQyM.jpg The six most distant known objects in the solar system all mysteriously line up. (Image credit: Caltech; R Hurt [iPAC]) When did astronomers first suspect a Planet Nine? The first recent evidence was presented by planetary astrophysicists Konstantin Batygin and Michael Brown at Caltech in a 2016 paper. Their argument is that the six most distant known objects in the solar system – all in the remote Kuiper Belt region of comets, asteroid and ice way beyond the orbit of Neptune – are physically clustered in the solar system, and for no good reason. These comets and asteroids have elliptical orbits, so every few thousands of years they swing into the inner solar system and loop around the sun. The weird thing is, their orbits point in the same direction, almost as if they're in sync, and their orbits tilt the same way, too. The paper argues that the probability of all that occurring by chance is 0.007%. Since the original paper was published, more objects with the same characteristics have been discovered. So what's causing it? They suspect, of course, that the gravitational effects of a distant eccentric planet might be to blame, and are currently using Japan's Subaru Telescope in Hawaii’s Mauna Kea Observatory to study the orbits of outer solar system objects to test their idea, and help define the size of Planet 9. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/waYazAAiN7iS8j5XHfE8UZ.jpg Planet Nine is about five times the mass of Earth. (Image credit: James Tuttle Keane; Caltech) How big is Planet Nine?If it exists, Planet Nine literally dwarfs the is-Pluto-a-planet debate. We're talking about a 'super-Earth'. It's thought to be five times more massive than Earth, and its orbit is suspected to be way, way beyond Neptune. The closest it's suspected to get to the sun is 250 astronomical units (an AU is the distance between the Earth and the sun). The eighth planet Neptune gets to about 30AU. Voyager One and Two, the probes sent on a ‘grand tour’ of the solar system in the 1970s, are currently 145AU and 120 AUfrom the sun. If it exists, Planet Nine is going to take some finding. Would Planet Nine help explain anything else? The solar system is like a fried egg, with all of the planets orbiting the sun in the same plane. That's why when you look at the night sky you only ever seen planets close to the ecliptic, that east-to-west path the sun takes through the day sky. However, that plane is inclined by 6° to the sun's equator. Elizabeth Bailey, a student of Batygin and Brown, published a paper also in 2016 that argued that this mysterious spin-orbit misalignment of the solar system is caused by, you guessed it, a Planet 9. With evidence mounting, astronomers all over the world are now helping out with Planet 9. There are too many studies to mention here, but last summer, an international team of researchers said in a paper that the orbit of a distant object called 2015 BP519 could be perfectly explained by the presence of a Planet 9. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/qBCkxyCRJz2k3upitXtLo6.jpg Does a stellar flyby explain our peculiar solar system? (Image credit: UC Berkeley; Stanford University) The 'stellar flyby' theoryWas the solar system knocked sideways by a passing star? In February 2019, astronomers at UC Berkeley and Stanford University suggest a ‘stellar flyby' theory to explain the solar system's quirks, including its cloud of comets, dwarf planets in weird orbits, and a possible Planet Nine. "One of the mysteries arising from the study of exoplanets is that we see systems where the planets are misaligned, even though they are born in a flat, circular disk," said Paul Kalas, a UC Berkeley adjunct professor of astronomy who co-wrote the paper. Kalas studied planets around HD 106906, a young star 300 light-years from Earth. "What we have done here is actually find the stars that could have given HD 106906 the extra gravitational kick […] just like a hypothetical Planet Nine would be in our solar system," he said. However, while it’s evidence that a large object path the edge of a planetary system can have a big impact, that doesn't mean it happened in our solar system. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/mVifJoZyJXzQQ9cGRJq9HJ.jpg Astronomers are using Japan's Subaru Telescope in Hawaii to look for Planet Nine. (Image credit: Dr Hideaki Fujiwara - Subaru Telescope, NAOJ) Will astronomers find Planet Nine?Theories are great, but astronomers need to physically find and observe Planet Nine for it to become real. “There are multiple reasons to believe that Planet Nine is real,” says Fred Adams, the Ta-You Wu Collegiate Professor of Physics (and Astronomy) at the University of Michigan after reviewing all of the evidence last month in a paper called The Planet Nine Hypothesis. He’s optimistic that in the next 10 to 15 years we’ll either be able to observe Planet Nine or have enough data to rule it out. “With its proposed properties, Planet Nine is right on the edge of being observable,” he said. To put into context just how difficult that's going to be, in November 2018 astronomers again using the Subaru Telescope discovered the most-distant body ever observed in the solar system. Called 2018 VG18, it's 120AU distant, which is possibly only a third as far away as any Planet Nine. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/fYAE5kWxR2Rrg9GHQ3wvKU.jpg The ‘Backyard Worlds: Planet 9’ project. (Image credit: P Marenfield and NOAO/AURA/NSF, NASA'S Goddard Space Center; Scott Wiessinger) How do we find Planet Nine?"It's a very dim object in a very big sky," says Adams. "Since we don’t know exactly where it is, you have to survey the whole sky, or at least large portions of it, in order to find the planet [...] I think by 2030 we will have seen it or will have a better idea of where it is." Until the next generation of super-space telescopes makes it into orbit, Planet Nine is probably going to remain a theory, but you can help. The Backyard Worlds: Planet 9 project is calling on citizen scientists to join the search for ‘cold worlds’ orbiting the sun by browsing images from NASA's WISE satellite, which is currently surveying the entire sky in infrared. It won’t be easy to spot, but with a predicted ten thousand year orbit of the sun, at least Planet Nine isn’t going anywhere fast. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/WeAzGVGa9HsyWbpcPmS5Ph.jpg http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/9zi85AT8tURH5C2fwZs996.jpg Welcome to TechRadar's Space Week – a celebration of space exploration, throughout our solar system and beyond. 3. As a career technology guy, I am admittedly biased, but few industries are cooler to be part of. Every day, I get to think with people around the globe about how the latest trends can be applied to improve the way people live and work. And that’s exhilarating. But it can also be really stressful. Things move and change at warp speed and long, irregular hours and lots of travel are required to keep pace. And technology isn’t perfect. There are always things to fix and threats to guard against. Most of us ignore the stress and anxiety we face, because in our minds, it’s part of the job. And as professionals, we’re supposed to suck it up, right? Wrong. Stress and anxiety are no different than the bugs we tackle behind screens. If we don’t recognize the symptoms - or worse, brush them off, they can do a lot of harm. Less stress, more progress: how to start up a new IT projectCulture: The driving force behind a more digital workplaceSecurity becoming one of the top workplace worriesThe silent killerAll jobs come with a certain amount of pressure to perform. And in many ways, this can be healthy. Stressing over deadlines can help you meet them. Worrying about the competition can motivate you to outperform them. But sometimes things get out of balance and healthy stress and anxiety become unhealthy. It’s important to recognize this – in ourselves and others – because if left unchecked it can lead to more serious issues. Trust me. I know. For 20 years, I’ve quietly struggled with mental health issues because I frankly didn’t recognize the signs and bought into conventional wisdom that I simply needed to “snap out of it.” What I chalked up to the normal pressure that comes with being a chief technology officer eventually became days of endless anxiety, introspection, depression and lack of self-esteem. And it took a huge toll on me. There’s a tremendous amount of stigma surrounding mental health issues. And for many, mere mention of the words brings about uncomfortable silence. But it shouldn’t. According to the World Health Organization, around 450 million people currently suffer from mental health conditions, making them the leading causes of ill-health and disability worldwide. In fact, one in four people in the world will be affected by them at some point in their lives. Breaking the silenceIt’s time to open the dialogue and remove the stigma. Mental health issues affect us all. But they can be difficult to detect because the symptoms are hard to recognize and can often be masked. How did I uncover mine? In 1997, my grandfather died. I had never experienced that kind of grief or emotional stress. And it triggered many of the problems I struggle with today. I started having panic attacks. I became detached from my surroundings. And I became depressed to the point that even the simplest tasks like going outside or crossing a road become huge efforts. Before I knew it, I was in the grip of a truly awful illness. Taking controlSo what did I do about it? First, I ignored those who told me that I simply needed to “pull myself together,” because that didn’t work. Then, I focused on understanding the physiology behind my symptoms, their triggers, and actions I could take to get a grasp of the current moment. And what I came to understand is that mental illness is a way of life. But it can be managed. Over the years, I’ve learned a few techniques that help me keep things in check: Keep it real - We all like to aim high. But overshooting can cause pressure and anxiety that may negatively impact performance. Be sure your goals are clear and realistic. And if they’re not, reset them or break them down into smaller goals. With flexible goal setting, you can adjust objectives throughout the year in response to your workload and ability to manage it at any given time. Know when to ask for help - There is no “I” in technology. It’s a team sport played by lots of smart people with diverse levels of experience. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by deadlines or the scope of what you’ve been asked to do, don’t be afraid to draw on the people around you. It’s not a sign of weakness. And you might actually learn something through collaborating that helps you up your game and win in the end. Unity is a strong value and one that I value within my company. It’s a great inspiration to know you’re part of something bigger and that people share your goals and are there to help you succeed. Be present - Thanks to technology, we are more connected than ever. We can communicate with anyone, anywhere, anytime. But we shouldn’t try to ALL the time. In order to perform at our best, we need to focus on the people and issues in front of us. Be where you are. Do the best you can. Take time to unplug. Encourage your teammates to disconnect. Know thy limits - There are 24 hours in a day, but they weren’t all meant for working. Find your passion and indulge in it every day. Engaging your mind and soul in activities you cherish can help to drive innovation and creativityIt’s ok to no be ok - Be open about your feelings and struggles. Talk to a friend. Keep a journal. Leverage your company’s employee assistance programs and wellness resources. There’s no shame in doing so.People often ask me, “Are you ok?” Depends on what you mean by “ok.” I continue to struggle with mental health issues. But thanks to these coping techniques and a positive work and family environment, I can handle them, and it doesn’t define me. 5. While it's expected that Apple will officially lift the veil on its streaming video and news subscription services tomorrow, it's now believed that the Cupertino company may also reveal a new subscription-based game service, as reported by Bloomberg. However, the report also states that the iPhone-maker could hold off on its game subscription service announcement until its next Worldwide Developers Conference on June 3. As you might expect, the service will reportedly focus on paid titles, excluding freemium games with in-app purchases. 6. While it isn’t 100% confirmed, it’s pretty safe to assume at this point that Apple will be launching its long-awaited and much-rumored TV and movie streaming service at its upcoming March 25, 2019 keynote event. Two weeks ago, the Cupertino firm sent out official invites to the event and, while the included details were on the lighter side, the not-so-subtle title – “It’s show time” – gave us at least a rough idea of what to expect. At this point, what we’re not sure of is the finer details, like what exactly we'll be watching on Apple’s new streaming service – although it’s all but guaranteed to at least include Apple’s own original content. There have also been rumors floating around to suggest that the service will act as a hub of sorts, which in the US will amalgamate services such as CBS, HBO and other popular channels, although we’ve learned that Netflix doesn’t want anything to do with it, perhaps unsurprisingly. There’s also word that the new streaming service will be part of a larger subscription package – perhaps similar to Amazon Prime and all its included benefits – that could also incorporate an Apple news and magazine service along with movie and TV streaming. No matter what Apple’s new service will look like, we’re all set to find out in the coming hours, so here are the details on how you can watch the unveiling live! Apple's streaming service: everything we know so farHow to watch from anywhere in the worldThe event is set to kick off on Monday morning (March 25) in the US, and will be hosted inside Cupertino’s Steve Jobs Theater. 7. The iPhone 11 release date is likely in September, but Apple is already rumored to be testing out several iPhone 2019 concepts months in advance, as you'll see below. There are plenty of iPhone 11 leaks to pore over on this page, and all of them point to a more significant upgrade than last year's rather incremental iPhone XS design. It may not be a radical top-to-bottom change considering the iPhone X redesigned launched in late 2017, but the rear camera may get a big upgrade if you turn your attention to the back of every new iPhone 11 concept we've seen. That's good news because Apple isn't selling as many iPhones as previously forecast, so its next flagship has to wow everyone or come down in price to stay competitive. Update: Your iPhone 11's screen may even work in the pouring rain, if a new rumor is to be believed. Having analyzed previous Apple events, we predict that the iPhone 11 launch date will be on Tuesday, September 10, 2019. With three iPhones launched in 2018, we expect Apple to repeat the trifecta this year with the iPhone 11 possibly launching alongside the iPhone 11 Max and the iPhone 11R (names TBC). So what new features will the iPhone 11 have, and will it still have a notch? Let's investigate what we expect from Apple's next flagship iPhone. What does the iPhone 11 need to improve? Read our in-depth iPhone XS reviewCut to the chaseWhat is it? The iPhone 11 will be Apple's next flagshipWhen is it out? Launch is likely to be mid-September 2019What will it cost? Likely no more than last year's iPhone XShttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/DHMddjYxbmiafAfT6GivdC.jpg The new iPhone 11 could end up looking similar to the iPhone XS New iPhone 11 leaks and latest newsWe're seeing iPhone 11 renders (shown below) months ahead of Apple's expected launch event, and all of the attention so far has been to the back. The images show three cameras in a central block on the back, a back which looks to be made of glass, as we'd expect, while the front retains the notch from the iPhone XS. We've seen this design rumored a second time now, so it could be accurate. However, it's not the only design doing the rounds, with another showing a triple-lens camera in the left corner. That would be more in line with where Apple currently places the camera. These image also show a likely glass back and the same arrangement of buttons as the iPhone XS, and multiple leakers have claimed they're right. The source of the images added that three new iPhone models are in the works – successors to the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR. So which design is accurate? One source has said that both designs are being evaluated, so ultimately one might be ditched, or they both might be used, or maybe we'll see neither. However, we have now heard from another source that the highest-end iPhone 2019 (which we'll call the iPhone 11 Max for now) will have three rear cameras, so at least some of these pictures could well be accurate. The same source says that the other two handsets will have dual-lens cameras and that the iPhone XR successor will stick with an LCD screen. In fact, we're hearing this from multiple publications now. The iPhone 11 Max may be the one version with a triple-lens camera, while the iPhone 11 and 11R may get them "eventually," reports Bloomberg. Interestingly, a laser-powered 3D camera was destined for the iPhone 11, but said to have been delayed to the iPhone 12 (or whatever Apple calls its iPhone 2020 model). This iPhone roadmap suggests Apple is going all in on augmented reality (AR). We've also heard that the iPhone XI will have a 5.8-inch display, just like the iPhone XS, but with smaller bezels, and that it won't support 5G, but that it will, surprisingly, have a 4,000mAh battery and a USB-C port. The same source says to expect space grey, gold, silver and blue colors. However, another source says it won't have USB-C, adding that the front camera will be upped to 10MP (from 7MP on current models), and that the rear camera will have 14MP and 10MP lenses, as well as a third, currently unknown one. We've now heard multiple times that it won't get USB-C, so don't count on a change from Lightning. One new feature it might get though is two-way wireless charging, allowing you to use the iPhone 11 as a charging mat for other devices. It's a rumor we've heard more than once now so it definitely seems to be on the cards. The same source for the first reversible charging tip adds that we might see a frosted glass back, and ultra-wide band connectivity, which would allow for improved indoor positioning. That could help with navigating interiors or might benefit AR applications. The new iPhones may even be easy to use in the rain. A new report claims Apple is experimenting with a new tech that allows you to use the phone's screen underwater. In other news, one report points to the inclusion of Sony's next-gen 3D sensors in the new iPhone, which could in turn offer quicker face unlock, better Portrait mode depth-sensing and some potentially cool 3D modelling features and (AR) implementations. We recently watched a sample of Sony's AR camera capabilities. We did see a patent suggested the iPhone 11 could have sub-epidermal scanning to unlock, in which the front camera would scan the veins and blood vessels in your face using IR to make sure it's actually you unlocking the phone. As well as a better front-facing camera though, the iPhone 11 could also pack the snapper and related sensors into a smaller notch, as a new tech created by one of Apple's camera component suppliers allows for some of the sensors to be placed under the screen. There's no confirmation that Apple will use this tech, but we'd expect the company will be looking for ways to shrink the notch. Meanwhile, another iPhone 11 leak suggests the new handsets could support input from the Apple Pencil that currently only works with iPads. Apple usually introduces a new chipset with its new iPhone launches, and the A13 chip is being touted for the iPhone 11, with analysts claiming a manufacturer is already lined up to produce the A13 chip. Inside the device we've heard talk that the iPhone 11 will include support for the latest Wi-Fi 6 connection standards – though 5G tech might have to wait until the 2020 iPhones. New iPhone 11 release dateiPhone 11 launch date: September 10, 2019 (TechRadar predicts)iPhone 11 pre-order date: September 13, 2019 (TechRadar predicts)iPhone 11 release date: September 20, 2019 (TechRadar predicts)The iPhone 11 launch date may be a little later than previous years, as Europe's biggest tech show, IFA 2019 in Berlin, is set to run from September 6-11 this year - which may see Apple defer its new iPhone launch to the following week. It's unlikely though, as the new iPhone launch has crossed over with the show a number of times (including 2014, 2015 and 2016), which means we're still most likely to see an announcement week commencing September 9. Apple historically hasn't held its phone event on a Monday, with Tuesday or Wednesday the most commonly used days. With the Wednesday being September 11, a day of mourning in the US, Apple will most likely pick an iPhone 11 launch date of Tuesday, September 10 2019. If Apple does opt to delay the launch by a week, we could be looking at a potential iPhone 11 launch date of either September 17 or September 18. Apple hasn't launched an iPhone this late since 2011, when it announced the iPhone 4S on October 4, and we fully expect the Cupertino, California based firm to stick with a September arrival for the new iPhone in 2019. As for the iPhone 11 pre-order date, Apple tends to open them on the Friday following the launch, which would be September 13 by our calculations. Finally, the new iPhone 11 release date - the day when you'll actually be able to get your hands on the handset for the first time - could be just a week after the pre-orders open, so September 20 if our analysis is correct. These dates could quite easily shift though, and we wouldn't be surprised if Apple followed more recent tradition and launch the new iPhone 11 on September 10. New iPhone 11 priceiPhone 11 price likely to start around $999 (£999, AU$1,579)There could be a new price strategyEven without the official iPhone 11 price, we know it'll cost a lot. After all, Apple priced the iPhone XS and iPhone X starting at $999 (£999, AU$1,579). We could see identical prices for the iPhone 11. With news that Apple isn't selling as many iPhones as it previously forecast, there's a chance the iPhone 11 price will offer a more affordable look - although we reckon a price freeze, rather than a reduction, is a more likely move by Apple. It could mean good news for the successor to the well-received iPhone XR, with the main complaint about the first handset being it was still a little steep price-wise. If Apple can reduce the price on the iPhone 11R, it may help soften a lofty iPhone 11 price tag. New iPhone, iPhone 11 or iPhone XI?What will Apple call the new iPhone 11? It's a puzzling conundrum and there are a variety of different options for Apple to potentially pick from. It seems Apple has backed itself into somewhat of a naming corner with the recent XS, XS Max and XR monikers - so where does it go from here? Will it stick to roman numerals, revert back to traditional digits, or ditch them all together? At this stage, with sparse new iPhone leaks around, nothing is off the table. At this moment in time, we're seeing most of you searching for 'new iPhone', and that's a strong contender. Apple has already ditched numbered increments for Mac, Macbooks, TV and iPads, so new iPhone would be a logical next step. However, the numbers are a great way to easily distinguish new devices from old, so both iPhone 11 and iPhone XI are very much in the running. Apple never did give us an iPhone 9 though - with the iPhone 8 the final digit before the 'X' revolution - so going back to '11' may look a little odd. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/p6c8cxtQdbQxaHdY699vpW.jpg The iPhone XS and XS Max are great, but there's still room for improvement New iPhone 11: what we want to seeThe iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max are great smartphones, but there's always room for improvement and human nature desires more every time - which means Apple needs to shake a few things up. Here at TechRadar we like to think of the whole tech community as one great, big family who help each other out, so we've come up with a few upgrades we reckon would go down a treat on the new iPhone. 1. No notch (or, at least, a smaller one)Love it or hate it, the notch has taken the smartphone world by storm, with a sharp influx in the design aesthetic after the arrival of the iPhone X - however it seems many of the competition have already surpassed Apple's implementation. The Apple notch is distinctive thanks to its size, but that's also its Achilles heel. It takes up a large amount of space along the top of the screen while we seen Android makers bring us dew-drop screens which are only as big a single front facing camera. What's preventing the notch from simply being ditched is all the tech Apple has crammed into it, and to remove it completely could mean a loss of some features - such as Face ID. Apple can probably relocate the microphone, proximity sensor and speaker, which in turn may see a reduction in size of the notch - which would be a step in the right direction. But, no notch would be the killer look - with a clean, elegant design that will surely turn heads. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/qxnwcLh8owK5LfvzqDFnec.jpg The notch is big... imagine if it wasn't there on the new iPhone 2. A new designThe current design of the XS and XS Max is fantastic - solid, premium and sleek, it's one of the most desirable looks on the market, so is it cheeky of us to ask for something new? We don't think so. Apple's used the same design for the past two generations, and to avoid the new iPhone 11 being branded another incremental update, a fresh new look would help. If Apple does ditch the notch as we've so very kindly asked for above, that would be the first step towards a new design, but we'd like to see it go further, It's already removed the headphone jack and home button, so our focus is now on the alert slider, volume buttons and power key. We've seen HTC and Google implement squeezable sides on their phones, and if Apple can hone this technology to make it even more user friending it could be the end of any physical button or switch on the handset. 3. Better battery lifeWe say this ever year, but the fact remains that iPhones still aren't the strongest performers when it comes to battery life. The iPhone XS provided an improvement in battery over the iPhone X, but as we noted in our review, it's still "a long way from the best on the market." It's time Apple really got to grips with battery life, giving the new iPhone 11 a power pack that will see it comfortably through one day and into the next without a panic about finding a charger overnight. Battery technology isn't going to give us the multiple days of battery life we saw from feature phones back in the early 2000s, but an iPhone that could stretch to two days from a single charge would really get people talking. 4. eSIM onlyThe latest round of iPhones (the XS and co.) offer dual SIM capabilities, but they can only hold one physical SIM. That's because the other one is an eSIM, which is built into the handset and can be assigned to a network upon activation. Having to slide a SIM card into a new phone feels rather old fashioned in 2019, so we'd like to see the physical card ditched in favor of a dual eSIM setup in the new iPhone 11. We'd also want an easy to use setting that allows us to easily jump onto a network of our choosing at a tariff of our choice and, more importantly, be able to easily switch to a different network when our current deal expires. Plus, it would also mean the removal of the SIM tray, allowing for a sleeker design and potentially freeing up some precious additional space inside the handset for new features (or more battery!). This is only partly on Apple however, as carriers around the world would have to fully support eSIM technology and at the moment only a handful do so. However, with the introduction of 5G in 2019 and the presence of eSIM already inside one generation of iPhone, this ask isn't totally out of the question. http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/digital-home/~4/bOsRCYDLd2k

To make things as easy as possible, we've rounded up the best logo designer software, along with logo generators, makers and creators, that offer easy-to-use tools to produce effective and professional-looking logos for your business. There should be a good balance of ready-made assets, as well as offering users the change to create their own artwork from scratch. Above all, they should allow you to produce professional results. A badly-made logo that looks cheap (or is similar to other logos) can actually cause more harm to your business than no logo at all. So, with that in mind, let's take a look at our pick of the best logo designer software of 2019. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/ChXSdQdXTFX8dQYYMvbUNg.jpg Image credit: Adobe The very best logo design software money can buy in 2019 is easily Adobe Illustrator. This is the software most professionals use, and with it you can create truly unique and impressive logos, and other marketing material. However, if you (or an employee) have digital art and design experience, then Adobe Illustrator will be an essential tool. It's expensive, but with an Adobe Creative Cloud subscription you can pay monthly and get the very latest features as they are released. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/onSzthJmDqq9yrKvhVpoz6.jpg Image credit: Logojoy If you're a complete beginner and don't have the time to learn how to use complex software for designing a logo, then Logojoy is a great choice for you. You can use the logos Logojoy creates for you, or simply use it as inspiration to create your own logo using another service. You need to subscribe to see the logos and to use them in marketing materials. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/vY3ZRcDhYaAqF5283Epi8T.jpg Image credit: Summitsoft Logo Design Studio Pro has been used by companies to make their logos for 17 years, and that expertise has led to a nicely-designed package that is easy to use, but offers enough tools to allow more experienced users to further customise their logos. It only takes a few minutes to create a good looking logo using Logo Design Studio Pro's collection of graphics and fonts. It offers over 500 different objects to add to your logo, and 120 unique fonts, and with a bit of time and care, you can make an eye-catching logo that suits your business. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/jAJRB3F7pywnsJ398LwBGU.jpg Image credit: Shopify You don't need an expensive image editing application and powerful PC to design your own logos, as Hatchful proves. It's a free service that makes it incredibly easy to design your own logos, and there's also versions for your Android smartphone or iPhone. It's incredibly easy to design your logo, just choose what sort of industry your business is in, your company's name and slogan and choose from what sort of artwork you're after. Hatchful then creates several potential logos for you, and you can then edit them using the app or through your web browser, then download them. Best of all, the service is completely free. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/GVJn6WC3ZBLp3nkL4eyKQ7.jpg Image Credit: Squarespace If you want a really simple, easy and quick tool for coming up with a logo for your business, then Squarespace Logo Creator is a good choice. Squarespace is better known as a company that provides web hosting and website creation tools, which are well known for their simple-to-use interfaces. Its logo creation tool is similar, and you can make a good looking logo for your company in a matter of seconds. You can tweak your logo using the web-based editor, though it's a bit limited in what it can do. You can download your logo in a low res form for free (and it's watermarked), or you can buy a high-res non-watermarked version for $10 (or it's free if you're already a Squarespace customer). If you've built your company's website with Squarespace, then its logo creation tool is definitely worth using. 9. Well it's certainly one way to get yourself a Model 3: hackers have successfully exploited a security hole in Tesla's in-car browser at the Pwn2Own hacking contest, earning themselves one of the electric cars as a prize. TechCrunch reports that Richard Zhu and Amat Cam – aka team Fluoroacetate – were able to bypass various security measures to get a message displayed on the browser. Tesla has said it will issue a fix for the bug to prevent it being exploited in the future. Meanwhile, the Fluoroacetate team walked away from Pwn2Own with some $375,000 (about £283,700 or AU$529,100) in prize money, as well as their new car. The Model 3 just got a price cutPrinter hacking is a real threatCheck out Tesla's new Model Y"We understand that this demonstration took an extraordinary amount of effort and skill, and we thank these researchers for their work to help us continue to ensure our cars are the most secure on the road today," said Tesla in a statement. Browser changesIt's worth pointing out that the bug that Zhu and Cam exploited was limited to the browser – they weren't able to take control of the car or anything like that. At the same hacking conference, hundreds of thousands of dollars were paid out for bugs discovered in Apple Safari, Microsoft Edge, Microsoft Windows, VMware Workstation and Mozilla Firefox. In other Tesla browser-related news, CEO Elon Musk announced on Twitter that the in-car software would soon be making the switch to Chromium – the same open source code that Google Chrome is built on. Whether or not that makes the browser more secure remains to be seen, but as always, don't try browsing the web and driving a car at the same time. 10. Welcome to our pick of the best fax machines money can buy. Now, many of you may be thinking "who needs a fax machine in 2019?", but you may be surprised to know that many businesses still rely on fax machines to quickly and dependably send documents and correspondence between offices. If you own or work in a business that still uses faxes, then this guide to the best fax machines in 2019 will be for you. Don't think just because faxes are becoming less common it means you need to stick with an old fax machine. In 2019 there are plenty of modern fax machines that come with a host of other features. In fact, some of the best fax machines are actually all-in-one printers, which not only send faxes, but can print, scan and photocopy documents. Not only can these devices save you money, but also space, which makes them ideal for small offices. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/URtfSuXJyp7tytTMxG4kMG.jpg Image credit: Epson If you want the best fax machine that also doubles up as a printer, photocopier and scanner and you want it for a low price, then the Epson WorkForce WF-2750DWF is the one to go for. Sure, it looks a bit boring, and when in use it can get quite noisy, but the amount of features the Epson WorkForce WF-2750DWF offers, plus the quality of its scanning, printing and faxing, makes it a brilliant choice for home and office use on a budget. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/3af398de9e1d303d90c62d530bb5516d.jpg Image credit: Samsung With wired (Ethernet/USB) and wireless (Wi-Fi/NFC) connectivity, duplex printing, decent eco settings and support for a wide range of media, the Samsung M2885FW is an excellent all-rounder, and one of the best fax machines you can buy in 2019. As it's a 4-in-1 device, it can handle printing, scanning and photocopying as well, so if you don't need those, then this is a bit overkill. However, if you're looking for a fast laser printer and fax machine for a busy office, it's a brilliant choice. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/g9JR4tEDSPKSjPHyzAbHaj.jpg Image credit: Brother If you're looking for the best fax machine for a busy and large office, then the Brother MFC-L6800DWT is definitely worth investing in. As a laser printer, it's incredibly fast, but maintains a high print quality, and it comes with a large range of connectivity options to work as a fax, including USB and network. As a fax machine, it offers 33.6Kbps speeds, as well as fax forwarding, automatic redialling and group dialling features. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/Eh3g3gao7CHqMPG9oBZi88.jpg Image credit: Brother If you're only looking for a fax machine, then you don't want to spend extra money on an all-in-one printer that will offer you features you'll not use. If you just want a fax machine, then the Brother FAX-2940 is the best dedicated fax machine money can buy. As primarily a fax machine, it offers plenty of great features including 200 speed dials and up to 500 pages of transmit/receive memory, which means you won't miss out on any faxes if the Brother FAX-2940 runs out of paper. You can also download a free printer and scanner software update that turns it into a multi-function device. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/fJvE2zVQ2ZXT2sDsqZJLbK.jpg Image credit: Samsung If you're looking for a dedicated fax machine and don't mind (or even prefer) a rather old school design, then the Samsung SF-760P could be the best fax machine for you. It's got a no-nonsense design that sums up what we like about this fax machine so much. It's dedicated to sending and receiving faxes, and that focus means it excels at its job, offering plenty of features and a decent 33.6kbps fax transmission speed. It can also be used as a printer and scanner, but we'd recommend only using this for faxes. 11. If you've bought a 2018 iPad Pro, then your choice of stylus options is about to go up by one: the Logitech Crayon device will be supported by the premium tablets when iOS 12.2 arrives, which should be next week. The news isn't official yet but was revealed by Nilay Patel on The Vergecast having previously been hinted at by Jason Snell at Macworld. 9to5Mac tested Logitech Crayon support in the latest iOS 12.2 beta 6 software too, and found that it worked, so it looks a good bet that the functionality is on the way. According to AppleInsider, the stylus doesn't work with the 2017 iPad Pros. Apple might soon unveil the AirPower matThe best tablets around right nowGet ready for truly wireless PowerbeatsThe imminent update would make the $69.95 / £59.95 / AU$99.95 education-focused stylus the only dedicated pointing device compatible with all the iPads Apple sells in 2019 – the iPad Pros, the entry-level iPad, the iPad Air and the iPad Mini. A tale of three stylusesApple's own Apple Pencil comes in two different versions – the first-gen, Lightning version (for the standard iPad, the iPad Air and the iPad Mini), and the second-gen, wireless charging version (for the iPad Pros). Considering these styluses will set you back $99 / £89 / AU$145 (first-gen) or $129 / $119 / AU$199 (second-gen), the Logitech Crayon is the cheaper option. The Logitech stylus was originally only on sale to schools and other educational institutions, but it's now available to everyone. It charges via a Lightning port, and works a lot like the Apple Pencil – though it doesn't support tap gestures or pressure-sensitive input. Next week is going to be a busy one for Apple – as well as pushing out iOS 12.2, it's also set to unveil its long-rumored video streaming service. We've made sure to pack our best laptops guide with brilliant devices that cover a wide range of price points, so every budget is catered for in this list. Remember: you don't need to spend a fortune to get one of the best laptops of 2019. The best laptops of 2018:Huawei has done it again, and its latest laptop has topped our best laptops list for 2019. As with last year's Huawei MateBook X Pro, the MateBook 13 comes with some of the latest components, including a discrete Nvidia MX150 graphics card, and a gorgeous lightweight design, that you'd expect to find on a much more expensive laptop. The fact that the MateBook 13 offer so much, yet comes with an impressively low price – compared to its Ultrabook competitors, like the XPS 13 below – makes it our choice for the best laptop money can buy right now. Sure, you may be missing a few minor niceties here and there to achieve such a competitive price, but on the whole, this is the most value-packed flagship laptop that we’ve ever tested. If you're after a few more bells and whistles, like super-fast Thunderbolt 3 ports and a 4K display, then the Dell XPS 13 or MacBook Pro (also on this list of best laptops) may be better choices, but for sheer bang for your bucks, the MateBook 13 is the laptop to beat in 2019. Read the full review: Huawei MateBook 13 Although the Dell XPS 13 has been knocked in the second place, it is still an absolutely brilliant laptop. There's a good reason it was at the top of our best laptops list for three years running. The 2018 Dell XPS 13 is a slimmer, more powerful version of the award-winning laptop with a stunning 4K display and a gorgeous Rose Gold on Alpine White color option. Packing an 8th-generation Intel Core i5 or i7 CPU and a bezel-less ‘Infinity Edge’ display, this Dell XPS 13 is more expensive, but its still worth every penny. It’s no wonder the Dell XPS 13 continues to be the most popular Windows laptop in the world. Better yet, there’s a wide range of customization options, so you can make the Dell XPS 13 the best laptop for you. Read the full review: Dell XPS 13 If you're after the latest and greatest laptop from Apple, we suggest you look into the 2018 model of the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar. While Microsoft had the performance edge over last year's MacBook Pro, with the Surface Book 2, Apple has come out swinging with some seriously beefed up specs for the 13-inch MacBook Pro 2018, and even more so if you go for the larger 15-inch model. The headline Touch Bar – a thin OLED display at the top of the keyboard which can be used for any number of things, whether that be auto-suggesting words as you type or offering Touch ID so you can log in with just your fingerprint – is again included. It's certainly retained Apple's sense of style, but it comes at a cost. This is a pricey machine, so you may want to consider one of the Windows alternatives. If you're open to switching to a PC, definitely consider the XPS 13 or the excellent MateBook X Pro. But, if you're a steadfast Apple diehard, this is definitely the best laptop for you! Read the full review: Apple Macbook with Touch Bar 13-inch (2018) The Asus ROG Zephyrus S GX701 is the best gaming laptop of 2019 thanks to its powerful components that include a 6-core Intel processor, and the latest RTX 2080 graphics from Nvidia. Not only is this a brilliant performer, but it's also impressively thin and light as well (by gaming laptop standards). Asus' Zephyrus laptops have constantly pushed the boundaries of what gaming laptops can do, and this new model for 2019 is no difference, which is why it has made it straight onto our best laptops list. It's available to pre-order now, but be warned: this is a very expensive laptop. If you're looking for something a bit more affordable, check out the Acer Predator Helios 300 later on in this list. Read the full review: Asus ROG Zephyrus S GX701 The Huawei MateBook X Pro is our new pick for the best laptop money can buy in 2018, after years of this list being dominated by the (still excellent) Dell XPS 13, which is now in second place. While Huawei hasn't been making laptops for as long as more established manufacturers in this list, it has absolutely knocked it out the park with the MateBook X Pro. This is a gorgeously-designed laptop with a stunning screen (albeit with a rather odd aspect ratio), and it comes packed with cutting edge components that allows it to perform brilliantly, and a battery life that runs rings around many of its rivals. It also has a very competitive price, giving you features, design and performance for quite a bit less money. Read the full review: Huawei MateBook X Pro Microsoft's second attempt at a pure laptop device is an absolute winner in our view, and while it doesn't represent a huge overhaul of the original Surface Laptop, it offers improvements in all the areas we were hoping for, including updated hardware that brings serious performance benefits. This is a laptop that finally delivers on what Microsoft set out to do with the original: a pure, powerful Windows 10 laptop experience. If you're not sold on the 2-in-1 nature of the Surface Book 2 (which is also on this best laptops list), but love Microsoft's premium build quality and design, then the Surface Laptop 2 is the laptop for you. A very worth addition to this list. Read the full review: Microsoft Surface Laptop 2 The new MSI GS65 Stealth has knocked our previous choice of the best gaming laptop, Asus ROG Zephyrus GX501, off this list, thanks to its excellent array of cutting edge components, which includes an 8th-generation Intel Core i7-8750H CPU and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 GPU. It's also more reasonably priced than the Zephyrus GX501, and its subtle design means that it can double as a work or study laptop without raising any eyebrows. If you're looking for a more affordable gaming laptop, however, check out the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming below. Read the full review: MSI GS65 Stealth With the Surface Book 2 (13.5-inch), Microsoft has crafted one of the most powerful 2-in-1 laptops in the world. The Surface Book 2 has some powerful enough components to handle most day-to-day tasks, and even some light gaming and video editing if you go for a model with a dedicated graphics card. Brilliant build quality and excellent battery life makes this a wonderful device for using as either a laptop, or as a powerful Windows 10 tablet. It also comes in a 15-inch version, which is more powerful and with a larger screen. If you're after a more affordable 2-in-1 device, then the Acer Switch 3, below, is well worth checking out. Read the full review: Microsoft Surface Book 2 (13.5-inch) Some of the very best laptops in 2017 have been 2-in-1 devices, and Lenovo has added to that list with the excellent Lenovo Yoga 920. It features a wonderfully slim design, and its build quality is exceptional. The 360 degree hinge allows you to convert the laptop into a tablet-like device, making it flexible in all senses of the word. It's cheaper than the Surface Book 2, and while it doesn't offer quite the same quality when in tablet mode, it's an excellent device with plenty of power and bags of battery life. It's definitely a worthy alternative, and it's easily one of the best laptops we've seen this year. Read the full review: Lenovo Yoga 920 Last year’s Dell XPS 15 was already one of the best laptops you could buy, but now that Dell has taken the beautiful redesign of the Dell XPS 13 and applied it here – while also making it a convertible. Well, it’s amazing. Not only do you get one of the most aesthetically pleasing 15-inch laptops on the market, but it also packs one of those new Intel Kaby Lake G-series CPUs featuring ‘discrete-class’ Radeon graphics. This means that this laptop packs serious power – even if it can get a little loud. 13. Beyond their ability to get some work done, the best Ultrabooks are kind of a status symbol. Think about it: you’re at a coffee shop, where everyone is using either a Chromebook or some big and bulky laptop from the stone age. Then, you whip out a thinner, lighter and faster laptop, packed with the best SSD and processor on the market. These thin and light beauties are as much about portability as they are about sheer horsepower. The best Ultrabooks won’t freeze up on you when you’re trying to get an important project done, or run out of battery on a short flight. You don’t have to worry about any of that. That’s why we took the time to find the best Ultrabooks on the market right now. From household names like Dell and HP, to brands you might not have heard of like Huawei, these thin and light beauties will get you through your work day in style. Plus, we tested and reviewed all these ultrabooks ourselves, so you can be confident you’re getting your money’s worth. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/g4Z6kKpACSX2SyWb47m6A7.jpg For a few years now, Huawei has been lurking in the shadows, ready to take on the best Ultrabooks, and its time has finally arrived. Like the Huawei MateBook X Pro before it, the Huawei Matebook 13 packs in a ton of powerful hardware into an attractive shell, while keeping the price low enough for anyone to afford. Plus, we have to mention those discrete graphics – it may be one of the smallest laptops out there to pack an MX150 GPU. It’s not hard to see why the Huawei Matebook 13 is the best Ultrabook right now. You won’t find that it’s the cheapest option by any means, especially as the more affordable Intel Core i3 configuration no longer exists. However, the Dell XPS 13 is a gorgeous testament to what a thin-and-light notebook can do. It wields the latest 8th-generation Intel Core i5 and i7 processors, of course, but it also packs a trio of USB Type-C ports and the option of an Alpine White finish that we can’t get enough of. However, in 2018, the Surface Laptop 2 has come back with a vengeance – bringing stronger quad-core processors and the full-fat version of Windows 10. It’s through these core improvements that the Surface Laptop 2 is able to bring the purest Windows 10 experience on a laptop, at a price that won’t make you gasp in horror. The Huawei Matebook X Pro is one of these Ultrabooks. This gorgeous laptop brings high-end components into an elegantly-designed package that puts even the MacBook Pro to shame. And, with its 3K touchscreen, the Huawei MateBook X Pro has a display that’s just as nice to look at as the chassis. It really is one of the best Ultrabooks you can buy today. In contrast to its nearest competitors, such as Microsoft’s Surface Book 2, it’s also a far less expensive endeavor. For the modest price you pay, you’re getting a gorgeous, all-metal finish that can be flipped inside out for extended functionality. The broadcasting giant's online subscription platform only launched in 2018, but has already made waves by hosting big-ticket tennis, soccer and boxing events. 15. Reversible wireless charging – the ability to charge other gadgets as well as be charged wirelessly – is heading to the iPhone 11, according to supply chain sources. Japanese blog Mac Otakara says its insiders are confident that the Wireless PowerShare technology will make its way into at least some of the 2019 iPhone models when they're unveiled (probably in September). In theory that would mean you could drop your new AirPods case or your Apple Watch on top of a charged-up iPhone and have some of the power transferred across – handy for those times when you're on the road all day. Apple has new earphones on the wayAngry Birds gets an AR upgradeGet ready for an Apple credit cardIt's a feature we've seen before on the Huawei Mate 20 Pro and the Samsung Galaxy S10, so it makes sense for Apple to want to follow suit as well. Straight from the rumor millThe technology itself goes back to 2015, but it's taken a while for it to become adopted in mainstream consumer smartphones. There have been one or two earlier whispers that Apple would integrate the feature into its iPhones this year. Also from the same report, the iPhone 11 models are rumored to be getting faster wired charging via a USB-C to Lightning cable – maybe up to 18W. This is one area where the iPhone still lags behind its Android rivals. And what else might we see when the 2019 iPhone 11 unveiling rolls around? Apparently one or more models might include the ability to scan the veins in your face to verify your identity. If that hasn't sold you on the next iPhone, what about a triple-lens rear camera for upping your mobile photography game? That's been reported by multiple outlets and so looks likely to happen at this point. 16. The PDF was developed by Adobe in the 1990s, and it’s one of the oldest file types out there. But while it may be something of a veteran, that’s not to say the PDF document is outdated. Over the past two decades, it has remained one of the best ways to share media-rich documents with users across a plethora of platforms. One of the biggest benefits of the trusty PDF is that it offers both text and image formatting, regardless of application software, technology or operating system. However, the caveat here is the fact that it’s somewhat tricky and time-consuming to edit information in PDF documents. Lots of businesses send data in the form of PDFs, although the difficult part is making sense of this information. For example, you may want to transfer financial records from a PDF document to an Excel spreadsheet, but there isn’t an obvious or quick way to do this off-the-bat. That’s where a third-party PDF to Excel converter app comes in handy, and we’ve picked out the best offerings right here. We’ve also highlighted the best free PDF converterhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/TeiUMKnjob9CciWXRLN3WF.jpg Image Credit: Adobe Adobe are the original developer of the PDF format, so their Adobe Acrobat software should be the market leading software. It's certainly packed with features, which includes the ability to convert PDF files into XLXS files for use in Excel spreadsheets. The process should be quick and painless, with the data preserved without need for reformatting. In Adobe Acrobat, you simply open the PDF file you want to export, click on the Export PDF tool, choose your format such as Excel Workbook or .xlxs, then export. You can do this on any device, including your cell phone. Once completed, you can then edit the spreadsheet tables using whichever device you're already using. This is also supposed to apply to scanned OCR data, and in each instance you can select the data you actually want to convert, instead of having to export the whole table from .pdf to .xlxs. Acrobat is more than just about exporting files, of course, and you can create, edit, export, sign, and review the documents being worked on collaboratively. This of course includes any spreadsheets that you export from PDF format. Pricing for Adobe Acrobat comes in two versions: Adobe Standard DC is priced at $12.99 per month, which is only for use with Windows machines; whereas Adobe Pro DC is for both PC and Mac, and is priced at $14.99 per month. You can buy Adobe Acrobat herehttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/YkEiPaJvoVEYhNoUCgd2qY.jpg Image Credit: Nitro Nitro Pro is a simple and streamlined application that allows you to turn PDF files into Excel documents with a minimum of fuss. Indeed, Nitro claims that its tool allows people to convert PDFs into any Microsoft Office format within a matter of seconds. Using the application, you can edit all images, text and pages stored in a PDF document and transfer them into an Excel spreadsheet. Just like the Adobe offering, you’re able to add and request digital signatures on PDF documents. Another great thing about this product is that it’s cloud-based, so you can access documents and edit them from any smartphone, tablet or desktop PC. You can even turn multiple PDFs into a single, searchable document, and there are tools that let you share and view files easily. Nitro Pro starts from $126 per single-user licence, but there are discounts for bulk purchases, and you can sign up for a 14-day free trial to see if the software works for you. You can buy Nitro Pro herehttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/MWpeFAqsmcUsP3qsdcZ36n.jpg Image Credit: PDFZilla The majority of PDF to Excel conversion apps out there are only available in English, which isn’t useful if you run or work at a company with a global reach. Need a solution on the language front? Enter PDFZilla. Not only is it an incredibly powerful converter in its own right, but this app supports more than 20 languages, including German, French, Italian and Spanish. The software is also fast and easy to get to grips with, letting you convert PDFs with just three clicks. You’re able to turn PDF documents into Excel, Word, Plain Text, Rich Text, JPG, GIF, PNG and more file formats within one platform. There’s also a handy batch conversion mode for dealing with multiple documents – up to 1,000 files – at the same time. You can buy the software for $29.95, although note that it only works with Windows. You can buy PDFZilla herehttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/nTJkEuVbxuUrHbPNQrHVq7.jpg Image Credit: WonderShare The majority of PDF to Excel converters are fairly broad in terms of their features, and PDFelement is by no means different. It’s been designed predominantly for professional users who need a tool for editing, converting, creating and annotating PDF documents. What’s more, it boasts decent platform support, being available on Windows and Mac, with an iOS app too, allowing you to convert and edit documents while on-the-go. If you’re about to head into a meeting, having access to documents from your smartphone could be extremely useful. PDFelement comes with a built-in optical character recognition (OCR) tool, which means you can annotate and add signatures to PDF documents. In a similar way to UniPDF, it tries to keep important elements of a document intact during the conversion process. For instance, if you have embedded tables in a PDF document, these will be converted into an Excel spreadsheet (hopefully) without issues. PDFelement retails at $49.95 for the standard package, but for all features you will need the Professional package priced at $79.99. You can buy PDFelement herehttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/B3ds4EPSnyC9n7SXgD2VuJ.jpg Image Credit: SmallPDF SmallPDF is another good example of a versatile PDF management tool. With it, you’re able to convert PDF documents into a range of different file types, including Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint. It’s very easy-to-use, and indeed cloud-based for maximum convenience, allowing you to access PDF conversion via the website from wherever you may be (providing you’re online). There’s also a downloadable app for those who want to work offline (for Windows and Mac PCs). SmallPDF allows you to compress, merge and split documents, as well as add e-signatures. And when it comes to security, this solution will delete your files an hour after they’ve been processed, so you don’t have to worry about any important business data potentially ending up in the hands of third-parties. SmallPDF is priced at $6 (£4.30) on a monthly subscription, or $4 (£2.80) per month if you sign up annually. 17. Apple isn't slowing down with the new audio product releases, if a fresh rumor is to be believed: the company is being tipped to launch a truly wireless version of its Powerbeats earphones during the next month. The existing Beats PowerBeats 3 are already wireless, but Apple wants to give them an AirPods-style transformation and take away the connecting cord and in-line remote, CNET reports. Exactly what else we might get with the mooted upgrade isn't clear at the moment, but with the recent AirPods refresh in mind, some kind of wireless charging could be on the table. An AirPower mat could arrive soonAudio trends for 2019 so farWe also want to see a new Apple WatchCNET's scoop comes courtesy of "a person close to the retail channel" who has given accurate tips before, so we can be fairly certain an upgrade is coming – it would be more of a surprise if Apple wasn't lining up a Powerbeats refresh. Previous formApple has past form for this, releasing new AirPods and new Beats earphones in a short space of time back in 2016, and it sounds as though some of the key technology could be shared here again. In particular, the newly updated AirPods come with the superior H1 chip, offering a faster connection to calls, improved battery life, and hands-free Siri access. Might the same upgrades be coming to the Powerbeats 4? We'll have to wait and see, but an announcement is tipped for April, with pricing still to be determined. If the April date is right then we won't be hearing about the new Powerbeats earphones at the Apple event on Monday – instead Apple will spend all its time talking about its new video streaming service. 18. Xiaomi's wearables may not offer all of the top-end tracking tech you'd find in the Fitbit Charge 3 or a Samsung Gear Fit 2 Pro, but its Mi Band 3 fitness tracker is a remarkably good product for the price. That's why there's always excitement around what Xiaomi is doing in the health band market. The company managed to pack a lot of tech into its previous three devices, and we're excited to hear about what Xiaomi will do for the next one. In fact, the company has already confirmed there will be a Xiaomi Mi Band 4. David Cui, Chief Financial Officer at Huami (a brand owned by Xiaomi) has confirmed the company is working on a follow-up to the Mi Band 3, and that we're set to see it later this year. Below you'll find all of the details we know so far, and as those are currently lacking we've also put together a list of features we'd like to see Xiaomi include in the device. Xiaomi Mi Band 4 release date and pricehttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/HGhaHbUMngt4NNqTRsWQvn.jpg The Xiaomi Mi Band 3. Image Credit: Xiaomi First off, the good news is we know the Xiaomi Mi Band 4 is happening. In mid-March 2019, David Cui, Chief Financial Officer at Huami, said "For Mi Band 4, it's going to be in this year. It will be in 2019. But I'm not sure, it's going to be in March and April. It is going to be in this year." So we don't know exactly when the Xiaomi Mi Band 4 will launch, but Cui's words make it sound like the launch isn't imminent, so we're currently expecting the Mi Band 4 to land in the second half of the year. As for price, we don't currently know. You can expect this to be cheaper than a lot of other fitness trackers though as the company priced its previous Mi Bands low. For example, the Mi Band 3 started at $30 / £25 / AU$35. Xiaomi Mi Band 4 news and leaksSo far, we've yet to see much proper news about the Xiaomi Mi Band 4 other than the confirmation of its existence. However, in the same announcement it was suggested that new features would be coming to the tracker. We've also seen a Bluetooth certification listing for the device, listing two models, both of which support Bluetooth 5 and one of which also supports NFC. It's worth noting that a Chinese version of the Mi Band 3 also supported NFC for contactless payments, so this isn't a new feature as such, and may not be widely available. That's all the news for now but we can also take an educated guess at some things. For example, looking back at previous Xiaomi fitness trackers, we can be pretty certain the company will include a heart rate monitor and an OLED display on the Xiaomi Mi Band 4. It's also likely to be water resistant up to 50 meters - although the company may push that even further with its next tracker - and we expect to see strong battery life as the Mi Band 3 could run for 20 days from a single charge. Be sure to check back in the coming weeks and months for more details about the Xiaomi Mi Band 4 as we learn more. What we want to seeAs we don't yet know much about the Xiaomi Mi Band 4, we've put together this list of things we'd like to see the company improve for its next generation tracker. 1. More accurate trackingBack in our review of the Xiaomi Mi Band 2, we had a few reservations about the accuracy of the fitness tracking tech on board. The tracking wasn't awful, but there were a few situations where it didn't keep up with some of the competition. The same went for the Xiaomi Mi Band 3, although we did feel Xiaomi had made some improvements in this regard. Every company can always improve at this though, and we'd like to see Xiaomi put a real focus on improving its fitness tracking credentials for the Mi Band 4. 2. A slimmer designhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/r6Kdd8vUfJJ9wbpfXH35Z9.jpg Image Credit: TechRadar Even if you love the previous Mi Band products, it's hard to call any of them a gorgeous piece of wristwear. For that reason we'd like to see Xiaomi improve the design for the next generation with a slimmer build and more rounded edges. Design taste is always going to be different for everyone, but if the company can slim the Band 4 down a little it should make everyone a little bit happier to wear it. 3. Keep the price lowThe Mi Band 3 is a cheap fitness tracker, and the same goes for the other two trackers Xiaomi has made. We want the company to stick to that low price for the Mi Band 4. That said, if it improves the technology a touch we wouldn't be against the price increasing by a small margin. 4. Add integrated GPShttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/q2xTrKCvghe5CZ7kDRQiug.jpg Image Credit: Xiaomi At the sort of prices Xiaomi sells its wearables for, you're never likely to see the company include proper GPS tracking inside them, but it could have a real winner on its hands if it did. Failing that, we're asking Xiaomi to include connected GPS features on the next gen tracker, so we can always just use our phone to keep an eye on our location and let the band handle everything else. 5. More colorsThis one is simple. You can only buy the Xiaomi Mi Band 3 in three colors, and the Mi Band 2 came in four colors. Rather than the company opting for fewer on its next-gen tracker, we'd like to see more. For the Mi Band 3 the options are black, blue and orange, so we'd like to see a bit of added variety, but we're happy for the company to choose whatever it sees fit. 19. Sony may not be coming to E3 2019 this year, but that won’t stop the proprietor of PlayStation Nation from revealing what comes next for the PS4 and PSVR. To that end, on March 25, Sony will be holding an online event called State of Play that will debut on Twitch, YouTube, Twitter and Facebook worldwide, which will act as a kind of stand in for a traditional press event. Here are the best PS4 Pro dealsWhile Sony hasn’t said which games it plans to show off, the company’s Director of Social Media Sid Shuman said that we can expect “new trailers, new game announcements and new gameplay footage” in a post on the PlayStation Blog. If we had to guess, we'd say it’s likely that we’ll hear more about Ghost of Tsushima, The Last of Us Part II and Death Stranding, all of which are hotly-anticipated titles but none of which currently have known release dates. What’s more telling about the announcement, however, is the language Shuman uses in the post: “Today, we’re introducing a new video program called State of Play, and the first episode kicks off Monday, March 25 at 2:00pm Pacific Time.” This is apparently a new series, and there’s going to be more than one episode – i.e. even if Sony won’t have a keynote at E3 going forward, it will probably still have one of these. As you may already know, Nintendo has been doing events like this (called Nintendo Directs) for years to great success and it looks like Sony's finally catching on. 20. International football is back! It's been a while coming, but Euro 2020 qualifying football is finally here. After a delay caused by the new UEFA Nations League, England kick off their campaign against the tricky Czech Republic. It's a Friday night game and we're delighted that it's on free-to-air TV in the UK - although you'll need to keep scrolling to see how to live stream England vs Czech Republic wherever you are in the world. So what should we expect from this first Euro 2020 qualifier? Gareth Southgate's England team will no doubt feel positive following the unexpectedly brilliant World Cup and then a great performance in the Nations League. Harry Kane will lead from the front as ever, joined by a squad of in-form teammates including Marcus Rashford, Raheem Sterling and Jadon Sancho. There are potential debuts for young Declan Rice and Callum Hudson-Odoi, too. On paper, it looks like a weaker Czech Republic team than we've seen in recent years. Ukraine got the better of them in the Nations League although they did manage to beat cross-border rivals Slovakia in their most recent run-out. Roma's Patrik Schick is their most notable player, and his decent five goals in 14 international appearances mean he'll be a threat. Keen Premier League followers will also recognise Matej Vydra of Burnley among the squad members. So can England get the qualifying campaign off to a flyer? Or will their opponent Czech their progress (sorry!). Find out by following the instructions below and grabbing a live stream of England vs Czech Republic football wherever you are in the world. The app uses realistic color blending, wet diffusion and drying techniques, and offers a plethora of watercolors, acrylics, inks and pastels. There are also ‘dry’ tools like pencils, markers and erasers, so you don’t have to stick to paintbrushes. The app also boasts some interesting capabilities like the ability to tilt the canvas you’re working on. What’s more, Rebelle works with Photoshop, allowing you to tap into 23 additional blending nodes. It currently costs $89.99, but you can give the app a spin via a free trial. You can download Rebelle 3 herehttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/yc6TktRkMv9cGEcKWxPDMF.jpg Image Credit: Artweaver Artweaver is one of the oldest painting tools out there, and the software is now on its sixth edition. The application provides you with a diverse set of predefined brushes and pencils that can be used to create amazing pieces of art. Not only does Artweaver offer an intuitive and easy-to-use interface which makes it suitable for novices, but it also boasts an impressively configurable brush system. So while you can choose from a variety of predefined brushes, you can also tweak them to suit your exact needs. Furthermore, Artweaver has another strong suit when it comes to working on joint art projects, because you can use the app to collaborate with other folks on the same document. Of course, you’ll need to be online to do so. Want to get a better idea of your artistic process and exactly how it flows? Then you can get the application to record your work. That way, you can review, evaluate and improve your abilities (hopefully). Currently, Artweaver is only available on Windows, but it’s temptingly cheap at $47 – and there’s also a free version available though it has limited functionality compared to the paid version. You can download Artweaver 6 hereOther drawing and painting software to considerWhile we've covered some of the big hitters when it comes to drawing and painting software, there are some good lower-level programs worth considering if you'd prefer for not to pay out for a big program. Here we'll look at some of the other alternatives you might want to consider, especially if looking for something more entry-level, or simply competent when it comes to art and design. PaintShop Pro is a neat little art program. Although not as full-featured as some of the above it's still very competent software for many aspects of art and design. Whether it's photo editing, drawing, or creating/designing graphics, there are a lot of tools and additional plugins available to get the effect you want. Originally developed by Jasc, it's now part of the Corel stable of creative programs and is available for around $80. Adobe Illustrator can sometimes be thought of as being the little brother to the more powerful Photoshop, but don't overlook its possibilities. While Photoshop was originally built for photo editing, Adobe Illustrator has always been designed around illustration and drawing. You don't need to choose between one or the other, however, as if you subscribe to even the basic level Adobe creative apps plan, you can have both Photoshop and Illustrator together. Sketchup is more focused on 3D design rather than general painting and drawing, but is worth considering if that's the main reason you need software for drawing. Even better is that there's a free version, but even the paid-for versions are relatively cheap by comparison to some of the above, with an annual cost of $119 or $299 according to how many features you want to unlock. GIMP is a dedicated art program specifically built to run on Linux operating systems. While it may not be as powerful as some of the software listed, it makes a big effort to do a lot of things, from photo editing to sketching to design. Anyone who already works with Linux has probably heard of it and even has a copy, but if you were thinking of moving to Linux but weren't sure what creative software was available, you could do a lot worse than try out GIMP. Microsoft Paint is a basic art package that comes with every Windows install, and has done so since at least Windows 3.x. The release of Windows 10 has seen 3D editing tools added to it, but let's be fair-it's still a simple program that isn't going to rival anything else on this list. However, because of the easy availability of MS Paint it's worth mentioning - if nothing else because it does have a basic toolkit that is expanded on by other software. 23. Openreach is inviting its telco customers to participate in a consultation that will identify the best way to migrate the UK from copper to fibre infrastructure, with a view to switching off the analogue network entirely. BT-owned Openreach is embarking on a major build of FTTP, with ambitions to reach 10 million premises by the middle of the next decade. It has pledged to expand the scope of this rollout if the investment conditions are right. It believes engaging with industry is a key enabler to delivering this larger target and to fulfilling the government’s ambition of a nationwide FTTP network by 2033. Openreach recruits more fibre engineersEE to launch 5G in 2019What is 5G? Everything you need to knowOpenreach copperThe consultation is seeking views on how Openreach would build out this new network, how the industry should migrate customers across, and how Openreach should eventually retire the copper network. For its part, Openreach has outlined a number of principles to guide the process. These include a pledge to avoid building new notspots, to work with customers to upgrade every customer in areas where the network is available and a simple product portfolio. It believes copper services should be phased out progressively and that large numbers of customers should be upgraded “voluntarily”. Openreach is also proposing a consumer charter to encourage transparency and create a process for those who will be migrated at a later date. “More than 16 million homes and businesses could order better broadband connections over our network right now, so we’d encourage everyone to check the services available to them and upgrade today,” said Katie Milligan, Managing Director for Customer, Commercial and Propositions at Openreach. “At the same time, we’re consulting with broadband providers to decide how and when we upgrade customers to even faster, more reliable and future-proof, full fibre broadband. “Our new network will place the UK at the forefront of the global digital race and provide a major boost to the UK economy, so we’re determined to create a plan that will benefit of every UK community, by upgrading customers quickly, smoothly and affordably. Openreach’s short term target is to connect three million homes and businesses by 2020 and recently announced Salisbury would be the first city in the UK to have universal access to the FTTP network. The government’s Future Telecoms Infrastructure Review (FTIR) has called for 15 million properties to be covered with fibre by 2025 and for nationwide coverage to be completed by 2033. It would then consider switching off the UK’s copper network. However, the Institute of Directors (IoD) believes a more ambitious timetable of 2025 would encourage fibre adoption and rollout. 24. Information Technology (IT) has become a necessary and ordinary part of the modern business landscape. However, being able to track and resolve issues across many devices can be a difficult challenge. Information Technology Service Management (ITSM) software aims to make it manageable. One of the key issues faced by ITSM is the variety of devices that might be used. There could be a mix of desktops, laptops, and cell phones, all of which will need to be kept up to date with security updates, as well as any software issues with them corrected. Additionally, ITSM cannot be focused only on the technology but must also manage the users of that technology. That means there is a need for proper error reporting and logging, technical helpdesk assistance, and other ticketing support. This must all be organized so its easy for IT managers to find what they want and need to find to resolve problems as quickly as possible, and ensure others are solved before they become an issue. Here at Techradar we've put together a list of five of the major ITSM platforms you might want to consider if you find yourself needing an ITSM solution. We've also highlighted the best helpdesk softwareWant your company or services to be added to this buyer’s guide? The firm also claims IT productivity increases via implementation of features such as incident management with automated routing, asset and cost management which can track costs and contracts for assets, and a modern, self-service portal for consumers to access. ServiceNow IT Service Management can also be integrated into real-time performance analytic dashboards, with the proficiency to benchmark how you are performing among peer industry averages. While the website provides plenty of information on how this can benefit your business, the company is unfortunately rather opaque on pricing. With no offer of a free trial, there are two plans with descriptive names, the lower being “IT Service Management,” and the higher “IT Service Management and Performance Analytics” which adds features, true to its name, for performance analysis. 25. New research has revealed that online learning tools are the most important technology for British universities and these tools are twice as popular than any other type of tech. A new survey, from Jisc and ucisa, also found that 68 percent of higher education (HE) digital leaders feel the effective use of this technology is key to their digital transformation projects. Improving student experience is the biggest driver for tech adoption (91 percent) followed by improving workforce productivity (71 percent), saving costs across the organization (41 percent) and improving staff morale (11 percent). Hackers target UK cybersecurity universitiesPrinter security a major worry in the education sectorUniversities lead the way in public cloud adoptionThe Digital leadership in HE report also sheds light on the progress made by universities in strategic digital transformation with more than half of British universities (53 percent) having a digital strategy in place while a further 21 percent stated their strategy is integrated with others in the organization. Digital technologies in higher educationWhen it came to the barriers that need to be overcome before digital technologies are embraced at UK universities, organizational culture (70 percent) was at the top of the list, followed by financial constraints (48 percent) and a lack of capability or capacity in IT (41 percent). In terms of online learning, some higher education digital leaders raised concerns that such tools undermine the worth of a physical campus but almost half (48%) of academic staff have digital tools embedded into their workflows. Director of Cloud at Jisc, Josh Fry provided further insight on the findings of the report, saying: “It’s heartening to see HE institutions throughout the UK increasingly making progress with their digital strategies. I truly believe that the technology priorities recognised in the report – such as online learning, AI and machine learning – can result in improved experiences and greater accessibility for a wider range of students, whilst continuing to make the UK the most digitally advanced education and research nation in the world. “Innovation must have a purpose, and it is important to take a whole-campus approach to a digital strategy before implementing new tools; technology initiatives work much better when aligned with an organisation’s business and teaching and learning strategy. Digital leaders in HE must work out how ‘disruptive’ technologies can be introduced into methods of working in a way that encourages engagement from academic and support staff.” We've also highlighted the best laptops for studentshttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/digital-home/~4/sD5-M42-Q5w
