http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/network_attached_storage/Synology/ds8185plus/P1030995-470-75.jpgNAS specialist Synology provided TechRadar Pro with a pretty interesting narrative explaining why a simple storage box could well be at the centre of the automated home of 2020. "Give it five to 10 years, and the NAS (network attached storage) will be the future of home automation," James Howe, technical consultant for the Taiwan-based company told me during an interview. New technology, more powerful hardware and a changing market have created new opportunities for companies, who like Synology, want to accelerate the demise of the desktop computer. Docker shockerOne genuinely surprising innovation was the addition of Docker to Synology's NAS software, DSM 5.2. Docker is one of those under-the-radar technologies that's understood by a handful of geeks and has the potential of radically changing the way business is done. Docker is an open source engine that allows developers to run almost any application almost anywhere. It replaces the hypervisor and the guest OS, and such is its growing importance that it has received the backing of IBM, Microsoft and Google already. Now what that means for the humble NAS is you can get that lightweight virtualisation application to run one of the thousands of containers created by developers, on a Synology NAS box that's compatible with DSM 5.2. Think of it as the ultimate app store for developers. Not only can you install whole operating systems like Ubuntu or CentOS but you can also run your own file server, WordPress site, a Minecraft server and so much more. One could envision having, in the near future, a marketplace on the NAS box that would allow you to manage your fridge, your lights and much more besides. Obviously, nothing prevents others from emulating Synology and getting Docker to run on their products. A NAS box is, after all, merely a single-purpose computer with a processor, system memory and a hard disk drive (or three) – adding to a list of features to make it a more compelling buy doesn't have to add any extra levels of complexity thanks to Docker. Router and NAS combo?"You can run Docker from a NAS, you can't from a router," Howe noted as we moved the discussion to the tussle between routers and NASes, the two main general purpose devices in the household that control connectivity and storage respectively. A merger between the two won't happen, he said, mentioning the fact that a RouterNAS would only add to the complexity in case of an issue. It's better to have two fail-points, which is why he believes the two will stay separate. Oddly enough, Synology will launch a router towards the end of the year. When asked about the decision to do so, James told me that it was part of a strategy to deliver more peripherals with the NAS at the core (video cameras are part of that mix, as well). The router, more specifically, was designed based on customer requests. It will be a "dumb appendage" for a Synology NAS and in the long run, the two will be seamlessly controlled by the same user interface (you have two separate UIs at the moment). It offers 802.11ac and two interesting features – an SD card reader and a toggle button that allows you to switch the Wi-Fi off. Making the NAS box the central server for everything is a logical next step for the product, James argued, noting that the move will make it easier to add new functionalities with a fully connected NAS being the future.

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/internet/Cables/Virus_synapse-470-75.jpgRansomware is the biggest threat that has ever hit customers says Bogdan Botezatu, senior threat analyst at Bitdefender, and worse is coming according to him. "It is ironic that encryption, a technology designed to keep us safe, is being used against the customer," he said. Encryption-based ransomware is essentially someone transforming your files into a mish-mash of bytes that need a key to be translated. And it is only the perpetrator that can provide you with that key – for a fee. "Interestingly, most of the time they are giving the encryption key to the victim if they pay," Bogdan added, "except when they go to jail first." Mobile hostagesAnd don't think that ransomware is limited to desktops only. Yes, it is very prevalent in that segment because customers tend to take security very lightly (think Windows XP and Internet Explorer 6) but the threat is very rapidly coming to mobile. Only one in fifty smartphones on the market have antivirus protection, and devices older than two years are unlikely to get any sort of updates or patches especially as Google, smartphone makers and network carriers are all part of the equation. What can be done to mitigate this threat? Well, installing an antivirus program on your devices – any sort of antivirus – would help. Most of them are free, either on mobile or desktop. Keeping it up to date and upgrading your operating system would be a good thing, too. Backups are also a very good idea. With cloud-based storage now available almost by default on most recent devices, ransomware is yet another powerful incentive to get the end user backing up. Best cloud backup: 10 online backup services tested"Backup as often as possible as ransomware can hit anytime even if you're not doing anything wrong," our interlocutor warned. "Because ransomware developers are very apt at using zero-day exploits, you don't even need to click to get the payload." Polymorphism problemsSometimes just browsing a website is enough to be infected. Add to that the fact that ransomware has resurrected an old technique called polymorphism and one starts to grasp the challenges faced by security experts on a daily basis. "Each piece of ransomware has its own unique ID, every single one of them is different from the other one. The more you rely on polymorphism, the more you can evade traditional antivirus solutions." He then quoted a worrying figure: 2,000 is the number of ransomware files uploaded in one day by hackers to VirusTotal, a free service that checks whether a file is a virus or not by matching it against a malware database from more than 40 antivirus solutions. None of these files were in the database, which is why relying on behaviour analysis rather than just analysing a file is where the industry is heading. The boom in ransomware can be attributed, Bogdan said, to the more mature encryption technologies as well as the wide availability of DIY kits that allow you to, well, build your own ransomware factory and start taking people's data hostage. He also cited the death of three people, all suicides that are directly linked to ransomware. All three chose to end their lives rather than giving in to ransomware criminals. IoT dangersBut the worst is yet to come. The rise of the Internet of Things could provide ransomware developers with a much bigger and potentially lucrative "audience". Want to continue using that pacemaker of yours? Please pay in Bitcoins only. How about saving your house from an impending blaze? That would be a few more Bitcoins. "There's no cure to ransomware and it could change the face of cybercrime forever," Bogdan pointed out as we ended the interview. http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/447ae9ed/sc/4/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/223515075795/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/447ae9ed/sc/4/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/223515075795/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/447ae9ed/sc/4/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/223515075795/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/447ae9ed/sc/4/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/223515075795/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/447ae9ed/sc/4/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/223515075795/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/447ae9ed/sc/4/a2t.img

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/adobe%20document%20cloud-470-75.jpgIf scanning, faxing and submitting important documents has ever frustrated you, then today is a good day. Adobe has created a new tool that will let you snap a photo of a document, save it to the cloud, edit it, sign it and password-protect it - all from a smartphone or tablet. The Adobe Document Cloud features a touch-enabled user interface, Photoshop imaging tools, and Adobe eSign technology, all of which are combined to simplify the document management process. For example: if you’re traveling on business and you need to file a receipt, instead of signing the receipt, scanning it, saving it and submitting it from a desktop, you can snap a picture of your receipt, adjust the image’s rotation and lighting, add an electronic signature or other text, store it in the cloud and share it from your smartphone, among other features. Another use case enables users to edit presentations on the go in a collaborative environment. Rather that sharing PDFs after each and every edit, Document Cloud users can access documents on their smartphone or tablet, make edits on a touchscreen, and lock, share or restrict access. Mobile LinkAdobe’s Mobile Link profile tool enables you to store your files, settings and signatures so that you don’t have to start fresh with new devices. Simply log in to your Document Cloud account and your electronic signatures and document preferences follow you from device to device. Document Cloud’s Send and Track features give you better control over who accesses your documents. You can adjust the settings to control who opens documents, when they have access, what devices they can access documents on, and whether or not they can make edits. All documents accessed on Document Cloud can be saved saved locally to a device, in addition to saving to the cloud, which enables users to easily move between working with and without Wi-Fi connections. Document Cloud is available on iOS and Android devices. Windows Phone users will have to settle for a document reader that does not enable edits. Document Cloud will be available later this month via subscription for $14.99 per month, and for one-time purchase. Adobe has not yet revealed pricing for one-time purchases. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/TRBC/Software/Windows%2010%20Jan%202015%20Hands%20On/full%20tat%20by%20gesture-470-75.jpgWindows 10 has a lot of welcome improvements, but there's at least one that might not be immediately obvious: it can take up way less space than past versions of the OS. That means that upgrading to Windows 10 could provide you with almost 15GB of additional storage, depending on a number of factors, Microsoft wrote on the Windows Blog. For one thing Windows 10 features enhanced compression that uses a new algorithm and evaluates your device's memory, compressing as many system files as possible without impacting your performance. That alone can free between 1.5GB (on 32-bit systems) and 2.6GB (on 64-bit) across mobile, laptop and desktop devices with Windows 10. Shaping upOn top of that Windows 10 no longer requires a separate recovery image to reset your system to factory settings. These generally come preinstalled by manufacturers, and their absence can free up another 12GB. That advantage only applies to tablets, laptops and desktops, though, and not phones, which already don't use hefty recovery images. "Through the capacity savings of system compression and recovery enhancements, Windows devices can be lightweight and highly mobile, yet, when you need it, have the full capabilities of the Windows OS," the team's post reads. As long as the new compression techniques and the lack of recovery images don't cause extra problems for Windows 10 users down the line, this is a nice improvement to an OS that already looks like it's shaping up to be great. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/TRBC/Software/Line%20Messaging%20App/Line%20Hero%20Phone-470-75.jpgOur meeting with Line, a growing mobile instant messaging application very popular in Asia, was arranged in a nondescript room in Barcelona, a couple of weeks ago at MWC, but the company I was meeting was anything but unambitious. Line is a subsidiary of South Korean internet behemoth, Naver, but its importance is such that it managed to become the company's main revenue source within just a few years. Despite having "only" 181 million monthly active users (MAU), the company's Head of Business for the EU remains adamant that the firm will be able to catch up to its bigger rivals, Chinese WeChat (488m MAU) and US-based WhatsApp (around 700m MAU). Sunny YoungEun Kim told us that Line has used Spain as the test bed for its onslaught on the European market. Spain has the lion's share of the 30 million active users in Europe with about 18 million MAU, and the service has yet to make any significant gains in the two biggest European markets, UK and Germany. "They're still fresh for picking," Kim quipped. What it does offer though is an intriguing insight into how instant messaging services might evolve as the race to diversify revenue sources becomes more frantic. Money spinnerA little known fact about Line is that it is the world's biggest revenue generator on Apple's iOS and Google's Android platforms outside of games. It generated a staggering 611 million Euros (about £436 million, $645 million, AU$843 million) in revenue in its last financial year. And that has been achieved without any advertising. In comparison, WhatsApp brought in a paltry $16 million (about £11 million, AU$21 million, 15 million Euros) in the first half of last year, which normalised for a whole year is about one-twentieth of what Line has achieved. The difference on an ARPU (Average Revenue Per User) basis is even more jaw-dropping. Each Line user brought in on average $3.56 per year, compared to $0.02 for Facebook's big acquisition. No wonder that Naver is said to be preparing for an IPO for Line after having grown its international user base. The South Korean company has managed to crack the revenue problem which allows it to then focus on organically growing its user base. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/TRBC/Software/Line%20Messaging%20App/line-stickers-420-90.jpg Games and stickersLine derives just over half of its revenue from labelled Line games (such as Line Raiders) with nearly a third coming from – wait for it – stickers, and the rest from its B2B activities. The company has more than 100 different games that are connected to Line, with a Line app marketplace hosting the lot as well as a number of other consumer-focused efforts such as Line Pay or Line Taxi, an Asian rival to Uber. Stickers are a surprising addition to anyone's bottom line, let alone an online one. The company has managed to carve itself a sizeable niche allowing its users to create stickers easily as well as buying and selling them. B2B aspectsLine's B2B business is mostly centred on the creation of "official" accounts. Manchester United and Chelsea for example have their own official Line accounts but other businesses have to fork out fees for their official ones with the added benefit of a B2B API. The main focus, Kim told me, was on the SMB market and small business owners. With such a well-established revenue model, it's not surprising that Kim appears uncannily cool about the competition. Yes, WhatsApp is bigger and more established, but "they have a subscription model" she added, one that users need to pay for after using it for a year. Line, she says, will never introduce a subscription; nor will it use advertising, content marketing or native content to prop up its bottom line. Still, breaking the user base conundrum outside Korea and Japan appears to be the company's biggest challenge yet. "We had the first user advantage in the Asian market, which gave us a concrete identity," Kim conceded. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/TRBC/Software/Line%20Messaging%20App/line-app-420-90.jpg What will happen down the Line?Matters are slightly different in Europe where things are more localised. What does the future entail for Line? They are already testing a free call service that allows video calls as well, not unlike Skype. Like the latter you will be able to pay a premium to call fixed lines. It's already being tested in Spain and is available in Asia. Line Connect is also another potential growth avenue for the company as it tries to establish a service that allows customers to get in touch with businesses via their official Line accounts. Surprisingly, Kim also revealed that Line Chat will come to the PC as an old-style application rather than stuck in the browser as a plug-in. "That's part of a bigger plan," she said, one aimed at providing "a lot of services" including entertainment, radio and media. It's not about technical innovation, she added, but more about delivering a better user experience. What about specific plans for the UK? With two of the country's biggest football teams already on board, Kim said that the company had ambitious targets which would not only involve developers but also local designers. 8 best messaging apps for Androidhttp://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/4474233a/sc/5/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/223515009015/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4474233a/sc/5/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/223515009015/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4474233a/sc/5/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/223515009015/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4474233a/sc/5/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/223515009015/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4474233a/sc/5/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/223515009015/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4474233a/sc/5/a2t.img

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/DOWNLOADS/internet/Docs-For-Facebook-470-75.jpgCreate and collaborate on Microsoft documents free of charge with all your Facebook friends by using Docs for Facebook. Why you need itWith so many free ways to create documents out there it's sometimes difficult to pick one out that has everything you need. No need to worry as anything with the Microsoft name attached is classed in the more reliable category and Docs for Facebook more than fits the bill. In its most basic form, Docs for Facebook has been created to let all Facebook users work together on documents using web-based versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint without having to pay for the full version of each application. There are two ways in which collaboration can be fostered using Docs for Facebook with members of the site able to share it with everyone, certain groups, all their friends, individual friends or nobody else. Friends can then be set up as viewers, which lets them look but not edit the document, or editors, who can edit and then save the document. Viewers can also download the document in either view-only or an editable mode, and that is down to the discretion of the creator. Documents, presentations and spreadsheets can then be saved to either the OneDrive storage service, if you have a profile, or locally. These can then be opened in any version of Word, PowerPoint or Excel and shared by email or using another method. It also works the other way as you can upload and open documents created in other versions of the Office suite to then be shared with other Facebook users so that they can edit them. Avid Facebook users looking to share documents with their pals and small businesses that want to aid collaboration across locations will find a lot to get excited about by logging on to Docs for Facebook and giving it a try. Key featuresWorks on: Windows 7 and 8.1 Price: Free Office for Free: Use the three main elements completely free of charge just so long as you have an active Facebook account. Collaborate on any document: No matter whether it was created using Docs for Facebook or not, users can work together on it. Choose the level of collaboration: The owner of the document can choose who should be able to see the document and whether or not they can edit it or not, whilst also setting permissions on its state when downloaded. http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/446d565c/sc/4/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/223514996671/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/446d565c/sc/4/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/223514996671/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/446d565c/sc/4/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/223514996671/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/446d565c/sc/4/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/223514996671/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/446d565c/sc/4/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/223514996671/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/446d565c/sc/4/a2t.img

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/tablets/Samsung/Galaxy%20Tab%20S%2010.5/Both/GalaxyTabS-HandsOn-06-470-75.JPGHours before CeBIT is due to start in Hannover, Germany, BlackBerry's Secusmart has launched a new tablet called SecuTablet, in partnership with IBM and Samsung. However, it is not the iconic tablet, the spiritual son of the PlayBook, that BlackBerry's CEO John Chen, hinted at MWC a couple of weeks ago. Turns out that it is a tablet based on the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5, probably one of the best tablets on the market, at least when it comes to its specs. The new device targets the lucrative global security market where national and international public sector entities and enterprises looking for enhanced data protection. IBM will provide with the secure app wrapping technology for the SecuTablet and support to implement it in various public sector bodies. Secusmart will provide with the underlying security features and handle the branding. Other than that there are no details about its price, availability and whether the Android OS that powers it has been modified or not. Users will still be able to install their own applications and popular apps such as Twitter, Youtube, Facebook or Whatsapp (BlackBerry's press release mentions "additional security" for some apps). Download of the Day: Sticky Notes
sincity posted a topic in OS Customization, Discussion and Support
http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/DOWNLOADS/StickyNotes/Sticky-Notes-470-75.jpgKeeping track of all the information in your life was hard enough before the internet came along to add a whole new ream of things to keep an eye on and Sticky Notes makes it easy to keep all those pesky little notes tidy. Why you need itIf we all still grabbed a post-it note every time we saw a piece of information online that we wanted to remember then our desks would become a mess of light yellow and other colours with Post-It becoming the richest company on the planet. Thankfully Sticky Notes blasts that prospect out of the water, As one of the more simple Windows widgets out there, it has one main task of creating notes but there are plenty of other aspects that make it a useful program. Sitting in the system tray, you create notes by simply right clicking on the icon and then choosing the create new note option. Once you're happy with what you've typed it can be pinned to the desktop just as you would with a regular sticky note on the monitor of your actual PC. Otherwise notes can be saved and recalled at a later date or even tagged with an alarm if the information warrants it. Being that they're not made from paper there's even more personalisation than that though. Each one can be changed so that it is a different level of transparency up to 90% or just completely opaque and there's even the chance to adjust the background colour of each note with blue, green, pink, yellow and white to choose from as well as custom colours. So that notes don't create too much clutter they can be rolled up to a much smaller format and there are also shortcuts to open up all the notes created plus if everything gets a bit too much then they can all be hidden at the click of a mouse. Anyone looking to create notes that will stick around or go away depending on your state of affairs won't have anything to complain about when they download Sticky Notes. Key featuresWorks on: Windows 7 and 8.1 Price: Free or $4.99 (around £3.32 or AU$6.46) for added features Say Goodbye To Desk Clutter: Scores of sticky notes all over your monitor will be a thing of the past thanks to this free virtual equivalent that will instead invade your desktop. Customise Your Notes: Buying all those different coloured packets of notes is also a thing of the past thanks to the ability to fully customise all notes with a pallet of colours plus the option to add your own options. Keep Them Tidy: Notes can be saved, hidden, cascaded and then brought back to the fore using the options menu or by setting up hotkeys. http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/4466d1c0/sc/4/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/223514956008/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4466d1c0/sc/4/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/223514956008/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4466d1c0/sc/4/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/223514956008/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4466d1c0/sc/4/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/223514956008/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4466d1c0/sc/4/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/223514956008/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4466d1c0/sc/4/a2t.img -
http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/DOWNLOADS/livecricket/Live-Cricket-470-75.jpgWith the Cricket World Cup currently in full swing Down Under and summer on the horizon there's no better time to download LiveCricket to keep track of those important scores all day long. Why you need itCricket is hardly the most frenetic sport on the planet and as such doesn't lend itself to you spending chunks of your working day checking the score. That in mind a desktop score service is just what the doctor ordered and LiveCricket's simple interface is a great way to track scores, scorecards and follow England all the way to glory (*the last part we can't guarantee). Installing LiveCricket is a doddle and there's no adware to worry about so once it's on your desktop the only thing you'll be harassed by is your country or team losing wickets at a rate of knots. The small application starts off as a un-intrusive scoreboard in the bottom corner of the desktop that displays the current score, run rate, and last three overs bowled. A small pop-down feature is also a part of the program and can be configured to show the score of each side, the scores of the two batsmen currently at the crease and the bowling stats of the two players hurling the cherries at the stumps. LiveCricket can go into even more detail than that though. Hover over the application to bring up the scorecard of all the day's proceedings where detailed batting and bowling stats appear for both teams plus the umpires, man of the match and everything else you would need to know about the match taking place. When a game is in progress a ticker updates every time a significant event takes place and anyone that wants an even less intrusive experience can choose to turn off the alerts to only come up when a wicket is taken or choose to have the full experience where there's an alert for everything. Any cricketing fans in your office will be smitten with what LiveCricket offers and as an sports ticker it is particularly quiet compared to what else is on offer elsewhere. Key featuresWorks on: Windows 7 and 8.1 Price: Free Instant Updating: Scores update in real time meaning that when a wicket falls, century is passed, or a side wins you will be informed. Custom Alerts: LiveCricket won't irritate you every time a run is scored or a dot ball bowled as it can be customised to only send out alerts when certain events take place. http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/4461c01a/sc/4/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/223514932259/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4461c01a/sc/4/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/223514932259/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4461c01a/sc/4/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/223514932259/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4461c01a/sc/4/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/223514932259/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4461c01a/sc/4/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/223514932259/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/4461c01a/sc/4/a2t.img

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/TRBC/Software/Windows%2010%20Jan%202015%20Hands%20On/collapse%20notification-470-75.jpgIf you're getting antsy that Microsoft's Windows 10 Technical Preview hasn't seen an update since late January, you're not alone. After an early leak, Microsoft has confirmed that it will be increasing the pace of new build releases for Windows 10. Microsoft General Manager of the OSG Data and Fundamentals team Gabriel Aul confirmed on Twitter that the company is testing a new build candidate internally. After that testing is finished, Microsoft would roll out the new build to preview customers, but Aul did not give a timeline for when that will happen. "We have a good build candidate with some new features I think you'll like," Aul said in a Twitter post. "Running through our internal rings now." Stepping into the fast laneAt this time, Microsoft allows Windows 10 Technical Preview customers to choose how often they receive updates. More adventurous customers who prefer to experience new features and functionality ahead of everyone else could join the "Fast" ring, while users who want a more stable experience can choose the Slow ring. Fast ring customers will get to see updates first, but because the software is still in the technical preview stage, all the bugs may not be worked out. Slow ring customers trade in the experience of being first to try out new features with a more reliable build. As Microsoft is increasing the rate of release of new builds, the company is advising customers to move over to the slow lane if they want a more stable experience. "No new build today, but we will be posting an announcement in Insider Hub. Suggesting people who want lower risk to move to Slow," Aul cautioned. "For now we've decided to try to increase pace of Fast, and that means letting people know first." If you're a business or enterprise user, or if you're running Windows 10 Technical Preview on your only computer, you likely want to move to the Slow ring. Pulling overIf you're not in a rush to try all of the latest features and additions to Windows 10 Technical Preview in the Fast ring, you can pull over and move to the Slow ring. From your Windows 10 system, click on the Start Menu and choose PC Settings. You'll want to choose the Update and Recovery option, and navigate to Preview Builds. From there, you can choose to go with the Slow or Fast build. Aul's comments apply to Windows 10 for tablets, laptops, and desktops. Updates for the Windows 10 for phones technical preview will roll out on a different schedule. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/software/Microsoft/Windows%2010/press/windows10-carousel2-470-75.jpgWindows 10 users get excited: your next technical preview build is finally on the way and a couple of new features have leaked out that will have PC users giddy with excitement. First reported by Neowin, the screenshots of Windows 10 build 10036 show two new features in particular that relate to how users connect to Wi-Fi and the Task View within in the operating system. The new Wi-Fi selection window makes it easier to select a Wi-Fi network. In previous builds when you clicked on the Wi-Fi option in the Windows Action center it opened up the entire settings tab. Now there is a smaller window available that pops up and allows you to select a network. Secondly the Task View has been given a small tweak that sees the open new desktop icon in the bottom right-hand corner and the ability to drag windows or tasks into other desktops with little fuss. Speed boostWe're still in the realms of the unknown when it comes to a release date for the next Windows 10 build and the chance of it being outed in March remains high even though we're already 13 days in with no noise from Microsoft. As for members of the Windows Insiders program it remains likely the new version will land sooner rather than later after Gabriel Aul confirmed on Twitter that the "Fast" ring will be given a speed boost. Though for now everyone is just playing a frustrating waiting game. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/software/Microsoft/Windows%2010/press/windows10-04-470-75.jpgMicrosoft could be ready to floor the accelerator on Windows 10 preview releases with a daily cycle expected to be adopted in the coming days following the accidental release of information unto the wild. The Windows 10 Insider Hub erroneously posted a new update on March 10 that explained "flights are getting faster" and that anyone not ready for daily builds of the OS on their devices "might want to move the slow ring." Microsoft's Gabriel Aul responded to the leak via Twitter by apologising for any confusion and explained that it was "an internal announcement that was mismarked and went external." No news on new releaseFebruary was a quiet one for Windows 10 fans waiting for a new update with only a Technical Preview for smartphones released and Aul confirmed on Monday that a date has not been set for the next build meaning users hoping to try out a new build this month may be left disappointed. It's still unclear, then, whether Microsoft will actually adopt a more frenetic release cycle for Windows 10 preview builds any time soon, although the leaks of the internal plans point to the process speeding up at some point in the future, which is good news in itself. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/TRBC/Software/Yosemite/Safari%201-470-75.jpgApple has issued a new security update in order to protect its range of products from the so-called "FREAK" vulnerability. The updates, which cover OS X as well as iOS and AppleTV, address the vulnerability that is able to take advantage of a flaw in SSL/TSL connections and allow secure communications to be manipulated. FREAK, or factoring attack on RSA-EXPORT keys, allows attackers to decrypt traffic sent over an HTTPS connection between end users and websites. Attackers are able to use the exploit when an end-user using a vulnerable device connects to an HTTPS-protected site that is also vulnerable and the only ones at risk are sites using a weak cipher that was supposed to have been retired a while ago. How to updateAttackers can manipulate this by introducing a weaker 512-bit encryption key into the protected session and then collecting any information passed over this exchange by using a low-cost method in the cloud. AppleTV 7.1, iOS 8.2 and Security Update 2015-002 can all be downloaded on the relevant devices and doing so protects against information being pilfered by attackers. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/TRBCNews/paypal-470-75.jpgPayPal has made a big splash in the cybersecurity sector by acquiring Israeli startup CyActive for what is thought to be at least $60 million (around £39 million, or AU$78 million). The deal, which is the second PayPal has ever signed in Israel, includes CyActive's revolutionary technology that can apparently predict what malware hackers are going to come up with next and then allow developers to prevent attacks before they've taken place. Those behind CyActive believe that most malware instances are constructed using the same core components from much earlier attacks and as such new attacks are simply advanced versions of what has come before. CEO Leron Tancman pointed to the likes of Flame, Stuxnet and the recent Sony Pictures hack as prime examples of attacks that have used a similar core from older attacks. Just a year oldCyActive is in fact only just a year old and already has an army of investors behind it such as Siemens' VC-unit SFS VC, and its CEO Ralf Schnall told ZDNet that "CyActive's founders are leaders in the field and the company's unprecedented cyber security technology turns the economic equation in favour of the defender." PayPal has been active in Israel for some time after making its first acquisition back in 2008 when it took on board risk tools and analytics company Fraud Sciences and last November it awarded Israeli startup AirHop $100,000 (around £66,350, or AU$130,500) in its BattleHack for Good contest. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/tablets/Dell/Venue%208%207000/Review/dell-venue-8-7000-review-tablet-updated-470-75.jpgChromebooks have been a hit with schools in the US according to Neil Hand, VP, Tablet Product Group at Dell but the tide may well be turning as Microsoft encourages its partners to release sub-£200 (about $300) laptops. "Chromebooks are doing very well in the US because of the centralised decision making inside the education system", he said before adding "that's not the case in the UK and in Europe". Google's petite laptops have been taking over classrooms and student backpacks as they have, very often, been loaded with features such as enhanced ruggedness that allows them to withstand the sort of rough treatment electronic equipment gets in schools. Microsoft however has reacted later than expected but recent additions to the line like the Latitude 11 have helped Windows make up lost ground. As it stands, Windows and Chromebooks occupy roughly half of the education market each. An update on tabletsNeil also revealed that the move was driven by customers with "fuller capabilities offered by Windows" being mentioned as a compelling feature. Speaking of tablets, he also argued that the hybridisation of Android and Chrome won't help. "There won't be an inflexion point", he quipped. Bigger screens won't help either as 8-inch screen diagonal appear to be the sweet spot both for businesses and consumers with phablets squeezing out 7-inch models. The Android tablet market had not only plateaued but also changing in nature; Windows will face fewer, well designed, premium Android tablets like the gorgeous Dell Venue 8 7000 as consumers become more savvy and shy away from cheaper models. Neil suggests that businesses are being increasingly influenced by what smartphones their employees carry and with Android and Apple making inroads in enterprise segment, Microsoft faces plenty competition. That said, Google For Work will only transform the tablet into a companion device rather than a replacement one, according to Dell's VP for tablet. When it comes to form factors, detachable is the way to go for devices with a display diagonal smaller than 11-inch. From 11 to 13-inch, a 360 degree design will likely be the more popular form factor while anything bigger will be a traditional desktop replacement one. Speaking of that category, Neil said that 15-inch designs are still a pretty big part of the market, as they become thinner and lighter. "We're bringing back innovation and personality, making sure that there's price in the device", Neil told us. "And those who said that the PC is dead are definitely wrong".
