The iOS update comes complete with Apple Watch support along with bug fixes and better stability. iOS 8.2 also includes improvements to the Health app. News of the update came during Tim Cook's presentation of the Apple Watch, which will support a number of third-party applications like Uber and Instagram. The Apple Watch is available beginning April 24. Pricing details were unveiled, including a $10,000 tag for the Apple Watch Edition. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/TRBC/office_365-470-75.jpgOffice 365 has roared back against Google Docs in the battle for enterprise customers after Microsoft's decision to start persuading companies to ditch Exchange email in favor of a comparable cloud service. Usage of Office 365 has reportedly "skyrocketed" over the past six-to-nine-months after Microsoft apparently began to advise customers to migrate email to service based on the Microsoft cloud and not one using an Exchange server based at the company's own data centres. The admission comes from Todd McKinnon, CEO of Okta, a firm that allows companies to keep track of employee passwords and accounts for all cloud services they use, who has seen Office 365 pass both Google Docs and Box, and it will pass Salesforce on in the next few months. That is in stark contrast to a survey taken in October 2014 that showed Google Docs was the most popular all round with Salesforce and Box most popular at work. Huge growth since last yearMcKinnon isn't the only one either. BetterCloud, which was originally 100% focused on security tools for Google Apps, launched an Office 365 beta two weeks ago, and BitGlass, has seen Office 365 overtake Google Apps for usage, a significant jump after a survey it carried out a year ago shows that 16% of its customers used Google Apps whereas under 8% used Office 365. Microsoft also reportedly signed a deal earlier this month to bring Office 365 as well as OneDrive and OneNote to Samsung's Knox Workplace suite of enterprise apps, something that has the potential to set even more alarm bells ringing at Google. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/TRBC/samsung_knox_1-470-75.jpgSamsung and Microsoft are ready to team up to bring a version of Office 365 to the Knox secured container of Android apps that runs on Samsung smartphones. First reported by The Register, it's claimed that PowerPoint, Word, Excel, OneNote and OneDrive for Business will be included within the KNOX container and it comes just weeks after the two settled their legal differences over the Android OS. Injong Rhee, the Senior Vice President of the KNOX business group at Samsung, told a gathering at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona that a formal announcement will be made in the next week or so to allow KNOX Workspace to include the suite as soon as it's downloaded. Inside S6 and S6 Edge from the start?Office 365 still won't be a part of the Android for Work suite announced by Google recently, however, the decision by Samsung to include it as part of the KNOX container is enough of a coup in itself. At the same event it was also revealed that KNOX will come bundled as part of the new Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge smartphones thus giving users Office 365 apps as soon as they buy either of the new handsets. Should there be any problems int he update process, Driver Booster 2 keeps a rescue centre where a system restore point is created every time an update is initiated and alongside this there will be a collection of driver backups for everything that has been updated. Driver Booster 2 can easily be customised with a number of delightful skins on offer, font sizes can be adjusted, plus you can choose whether or not it should start each time Windows is rebooted. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/DOWNLOADS/internet/torch-browser-2-470-75.jpgHaving to bother downloading scores of add-ons to make your Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox browsing experience the best it can be is often annoying and can be remedied by simply choosing a different browser in the first place. Step forward Torch. Why you need itFrom the very outset Torch looks and acts like a clone of Google Chrome and you wouldn't be wrong to think that. There's so much more to Torch than simply its roots in the Google camp though. Torch brings to the table a range of add-ons that allow you to grab media from a webpage, enjoy a Spotify-like listening experience, play games and even download the latest torrents without so much as a visit to the Chrome Web Store. Users can access the Torch Music app at any time from the dedicated icon alongside the address bar. Tracks are grabbed right from YouTube and then organised into playlists according to artist, album or compilation. It goes deeper than that with suggestions, trending songs, personalised playlists and it will have you wondering whether paying for that Spotify Premium membership is really worth it. Games are another strand to the browser with an arsenal of popular titles that can play natively within the browser window and there is the ability to look at games by category, popularity and how new they are. Torrent downloads can also be initiated directly inside the browser window by using the icon to the right of the address bar and it negates the need for a separate app to that takes up valuable disk space. There's even an in-browser searching facility for torrents that appears when the program is turned on. That customisation goes even further still with custom home and search page backdrops that come complete with the time in the top corner and a variety of different options that get away from the benign offerings in Google Chrome Torch will appeal primarily to those that have a real premium for space on their machines but also has much to offer to regular Windows PC users hankering for an escape from the norm. Key featuresWorks on: Windows PC Price: Free Torch Music: Play songs and videos from right inside the browser window by taking advantage of the service's YouTube integration. Personalised Home: Various backdrops can be added to the initial start page that also features the date and time. Torrent Friendly: With its own torrent client built-in you can search and download large files from inside the browser itself. http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/44261a9b/sc/4/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/222166938930/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/44261a9b/sc/4/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/222166938930/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/44261a9b/sc/4/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/222166938930/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/44261a9b/sc/4/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/222166938930/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/44261a9b/sc/4/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/222166938930/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/44261a9b/sc/4/a2t.img

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/other/Generics/court_gavel_2-470-75.jpgOne of the creators of the Linux kernel has filed a suit against VMWare accusing it of failing to live up to its copyright commitments when it comes to open-source programming. Christoph Hellwig, who owns the copyright to certain parts of the Linux kernel, accuses VMware of combining proprietary source code with open-source code in its ESXi product line without releasing it publicly thus breaking the General Public License version 2 (GPLv2). It's claimed the company wrapped its VMkernel, which is a part of its ESXi virtualisation software for servers, with open-source code and in addition to that it is being accused of not complying with the same rules in relation to the BusyBox bundle of software. VMkernel is a POSIX-like OS formulated by VMware to act as a liaison between virtual machines and the physical hardware that supports them. Case is without merit, says VMwareThe case, which has been filed against VMware in the district court of Hamburg, has been funded by the Software Freedom Conservancy and a long blog post from the foundation explained that it first found VMware was flouting the rules back in 2011 and has been investigating since then. For its part VMware claims that the lawsuit is without merit and added that they "will prevail on all issues through the judicial process in Germany" and that in mind it's expected that this case will roll along for some time yet. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/software/Windows/windows81/windows81-470-75.jpgMicrosoft has confirmed that all Windows PCs are at risk from an HTTPS exploit known as FREAK that has already affected a raft of Android and Apple devices. The bug was originally disclosed on Monday and it was thought that PCs running Windows weren't affected by the exploit that has existed for more than 10 years and allows attackers to easily decrypt traffic sent over an HTTPS connection between end users and websites. Attacks can be carried out when an end-user on a vulnerable device connects to an HTTPS-protected site that is also vulnerable, and those sites that are at risk are ones that use the weak cipher that was thought to be long retired. FREAK, which stands for factoring attack on RSA-EXPORT keys, allows those monitoring the traffic to introduce malicious packets into the traffic flow that force the end user and site to use a weaker 512-bit encryption key while in an encrypted web session. Attackers can collect information transmitted over this exchange by using the cloud to factor the website's underlying private key. This process costs just $100 (around £66, or AU$130) and takes around seven hours to complete. Once that has taken place, the attacker can act as the official HTTPS-protected site to potentially read or modify data travelling between the site and end users. No Windows patchThe scale of the problem was laid bare by a report by security researchers on FREAKattack.com that found 36% of the 14 million HTTPS-protected sites it surveyed were using the weak cipher. Apple and Google have already released updates that get around the problem and, although Microsoft has yet to develop a patch to bypass the problem that affects all consumer versions of Windows, it is advising users to apply a workaround that is detailed here. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/features/2013/best_torrent_client/Tixati-470-75.jpgIntroduction, Vuze, uTorrentTorrents, at almost 14 years old, are veritably ancient when it comes to innovation yet the popular file sharing method remains one of the mainstays of almost anyone that wants to download files and large companies now use it to distribute large files to users. Clients were and have remainder the easiest way to get hold of torrents and as with any part of the internet there are a plethora of different options to choose from that offer almost the same service yet little tweaks make each one slightly different. What follows is the top five torrent clients in the world today. VuzeAnyone that wants something beyond just a stripped down torrent client will be happy to know that Vuze fills that void with some style. Like its peers, Vuze supports all torrent types though its content discovery feature is something that is to be admired. It suggests a wealth of HD videos with categories that include news, music videos, tv shows, movies and sports. Further than that it also has a glut of games that can be downloaded and that's even before you've begun to use the search capabilities that Vuze offers. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/DOWNLOADS/utilities/vuze-dotd-420-90.jpg Searching using Vuze is more convenient than other services as it uses a built-in browser window to find torrents using either a web search through Microsoft Bing or a metasearch of a range of torrent sites. The meta search is a real advantage although the built-in web browser was fairly sluggish when we searched using it. The free features don't end there, however, with a dedicated RSS feeds tab within the content discovery tab, device playback, an iTunes converter, DVD burner and live customer support chat making there few reasons for you not to download Vuze. One thing to note is that during the installation make sure that you pick the custom path and then also don't accept the additional bloatware that comes with it and the only thing the paid-for premium version brings is the chance to get rid of ads, and $29.99 (around £19.50, or AU$38.50) is a steep price to pay for this plus bundled anti-virus protection. uTorrentThe grand daddy of all the torrent clients for some time, uTorrent is at the top table thanks to its lightweight nature and the fact that it's built a reputation as something that works really well. When uTorrent is opened for the first time it will look a little bloated thanks to a sidebar that offers you the chance to upgrade to uTorrent Pro or download the latest free offering from BitTorrent, however, all of this can be changed by simply customising the look and removing the sidebar in the options menu. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/TRBCfeatures/Torrents/uTorrent2-420-90.jpg After the sidebar is removed and you're left with the blank whiteness of the torrent client it comes into its own as a downloader. The speeds are still what everyone has come to expect and you can type search queries into the built-in search field before being taken to a web browser tab to complete your search. As soon as you download the torrent it will open automatically in uTorrent and before you know it the torrent has downloaded. Unfortunately there is no such thing as a completely free version of uTorrent and it ends up bombarding you with various offers that need to be dodged during the installation to make sure you don't end up with four or five pieces of added software. Added extras in uTorrent include the ability to set up RSS feeds and play content using the uTorrent player that comes as part of the package. uTorrent will still be at pains to point out that there is a Pro version available for $19.95 that offers even more features such as instant streaming of torrents, automatic virus and malware protection, the ability to play more formats, a converter and "premium" customer support. The free version of uTorrent remains a very strong proposition and for something that grabs torrents with little fuss there's no a lot to fault about it. BitTorrent, BitComet, BitLordBitTorrentYou might open BitTorrent and immediately feel like your suffering some kind of weird deja vu where the colours have been flipped. This is no case of deja-vu though. uTorrent and BitTorrent are one of the same and made by the company that brands itself as the "original BitTorrent". http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/TRBCfeatures/Torrents/BitTorrent2-420-90.jpg What you're left with when downloading BitTorrent is quite literally the same program as uTorrent except that the colour scheme is purple rather than green. So it really all boils down to whether you're a purple or a green. Time to make your mind up… BitCometWhen torrents first made it onto the scene some 14 years ago, torrent clients had little more than a white space where the downloads took place and BitComet is one program that remains in that corner. BitComet's antiquated approach to torrent downloads is maybe where it excels in terms of the lack of advertising and bloatware but it's also where it falls down. The program feels a lot less intuitive than many of its rivals and you could even go as far as to say that it's confusing due to the wealth of options that are available on screen. Expert users will find the number of options helpful, however, and once you get to know your way round it's nowhere near as daunting. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/TRBCfeatures/Torrents/BitComet2-420-90.jpg It has a limited built-in browser yet, like many of the other clients around, directs you to an external window when it actually searches for a torrent and performance-wise it gets downloads started just as quickly as its competitors. For those that want a very basic client this is more than adequate and BitComet does the job of torrent downloading perfectly well. BitLordTaking a slightly different approach to the well trodden plain white window is BitLord through its beige and black colour-way that immediately throws hundreds of suggestions for content as soon as you enter its main window. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/TRBCfeatures/Torrents/BitLord2-420-90.jpg The interface itself is the most simple one on the entire list with large icons that clearly label what can be found beneath each tab and the fact you can search for and then start torrents without having to leave the program will appeal to many users comparing it to other clients. BitLord also doesn't include a plethora of useless adware that some other clients have and combine this with the ease of finding torrents and BitLord is one of those that we would recommend to beginners to the world of torrents. http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/441f3384/sc/4/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/222166923294/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/441f3384/sc/4/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/222166923294/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/441f3384/sc/4/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/222166923294/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/441f3384/sc/4/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/222166923294/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/441f3384/sc/4/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/222166923294/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/441f3384/sc/4/a2t.img

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/TRBC/Software/Microsoft/Windows%20Server/windows%20server%20two%20faces%20hero-470-75.jpgMicrosoft hasn't released as many details about the next version of Windows Server, which it now says will be available in 2016, as it has about Windows 10. Windows Server architect and creator of PowerShell, Jeffrey Snover, gave more details in a recent Microsoft UK event, noting how Azure initially used a version of Windows Server that had been rewritten to suit the very different needs of running a cloud. Since then, Windows Server has itself been reworked to support running cloud services like Azure better, and if you want a private cloud, Microsoft offers both the Windows Azure Pack to give you IaaS hosting with cloud-style subscriptions and fast VM deployment, and the cloud-in-a-box Cloud Platform System which gives you an "Azure-consistent" mix of Window Server, System Centre and the WAP portal all preconfigured on Dell hardware – everything from the servers to the SSDs to the network cables are set up and ready to go. PowerShell and DSCThat's all done with PowerShell scripts and Desired State Configuration (DSC), a PowerShell system that lets you write configurations once and have them automatically deploy and stay consistent across multiple machines. With the next version of Windows Server, DSC scales up to running an entire cloud data centre with software-defined networking features that go from discovering and managing the new topology, to monitoring the network and guaranteeing network Quality of Service. Not to mention the kind of fabric network management that you usually buy expensive network hardware to achieve – but you'll be able to do it all with commodity network hardware (as long as it supports current standards like RDMA and SMB 3). Because Azure runs on Windows Server, Microsoft can use Azure for prototyping new features for Windows Server. That's what's happening with Docker support and Microsoft is doubtless prototyping the software-defined networking improvements there too. Deep refactoringBut not everyone wants to run a cloud, so the "deep refactoring" that Snover says has gone on for Windows Server vNext (which we expect will be called Windows Server 2016) is delivering a layered architecture that takes the current concept of server roles right down into the OS itself, making it more modular. (This is also an extension of the refactoring that's been happening in the Windows client under names like MinWin, organising the spaghetti of API calls into more logical layers that are easier to isolate and update.) At the lowest layer is a cloud-optimised server that Azure (and private cloud systems) will run on. On top of that is the 'full' server that you'll use for an on-premise Windows Server system. "There will be two APIs, for server and for the cloud-optimised server," he explained. You'll be able to "just take the components you need." http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/TRBC/Software/Microsoft/Windows%20Server/Evolving%20Windows%20Server-420-90.jpg Container support is at this level, with two containers: one container system for the cloud-optimised server (which we expect includes the Docker engine support that will be native in the kernel) and another container for the 'full' version of Windows Server. "We will have two flavours of compute containers – one for application compatibility," Snover said, as well as "containers optimised for the cloud". The Windows client team has already talked about using containers in Windows 10 as Virtual Security Modules to make sure the user authentication service runs in a separate VM. Snover didn't go into details about similar security features in Windows Server for "assurance," but he did suggest preparing by buying servers that have the same Trusted Protection Module all PCs now include. "With TPMs we're not quite there yet," he said. "Some vendors have them and some don't. You should be demanding them, because a bunch of assurance investments going forward are going to require TPM on the server." Layer cakeSnover also showed another layer in Windows Server, for situations when you're running a client experience on a server, which has stopped some server applications being fully automated. Automation is key for running a cloud and it makes running any server far simpler and more reliable – that's why it's such a big focus for Microsoft in Windows Server now. "For a modern data centre," Snover points out, "remote management is non-negotiable." "People who wrote server applications wrote a local GUI for admin tools," he explains. "But they would put a bunch of business logic in the GUI and call private APIs because that's easier [for them to build], but then they didn't have formal remote management APIs so you couldn't automate things." So the next version of Windows Server will let them write a client that runs on the server, so it's possible to work with it in the Windows shell, and see it alongside the browser they're looking at documentation in or logging into Azure with – but that uses Windows Server APIs that can be automated and managed remotely. "You can put a client on top of a server, but use the server APIs." That way, the applications you run on a server won't stop you being able to manage that server without ever going near it. http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/44103b11/sc/4/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/222166836613/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/44103b11/sc/4/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/222166836613/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/44103b11/sc/4/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/222166836613/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/44103b11/sc/4/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/222166836613/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/44103b11/sc/4/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/222166836613/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/44103b11/sc/4/a2t.img

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/TRBC/Software/Microsoft/clutter-470-75.jpgMicrosoft Office 365 administrators have been handed greater control over the way spam is dealt with inside inboxes through the service's Clutter feature for Outlook. The latest in a steady stream of updates is designed to ensure that fewer important messages slip through the cracks and find their way in the Clutter folder, when they are meant to stay in the Outlook email inbox. To combat this, administrators can now enable specific senders or messages that should or shouldn't get past the Clutter filters. The service does this by using transport rules in the same way that a spam filter prevents certain messages entering the inbox. Pictures landing soonAnother enhancement has been made to the way employees are informed on the way Clutter works. Plus, the initial message sent to recipients can be personalized by the administrator with a custom sender display name. There are also plans to allow custom logos in the near future. A third addition to the spam-management lineup sees administrators able to assign retention policy tags to the Clutter folder in the same way as other folders to better manage the life cycle of messages that find a way into a spam folder. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/internet/Cables/Virus_synapse-470-75.jpgAnother day and another strong report card for malware in 2014. Spanish firm Panda Security has reported that the number of new malware instances doubled compared to 2013. The report found there were an average of 200,000 new malware infection types every day in 2014. As part of a total the firm's PandaLabs anti-malware arm were able to detect and neutralise 75 million samples in 2014. That's only a drop in the ocean compared to the total number of new specimens that hit 220 million. Panda also went on to report 34% of the malware was originally created and coded in 2014. Trojans remain top of the malware pile with a whopping 70% of new malware fallen into this category, viruses account for 12.33%, while worms contribute to the equation with 6% and adware/spyware with an even smaller 3%. Geographically, the UK came out as one of the safest places on the planet with its 22% infection rate, putting it fourth on a list dominated by European countries and topped by Sweden and Norway with 20% infection rates. China most unsafeAt the other end of the scale, China had an infection rate of 49% followed by Ecuador (42.33%) and Turkey (41.53%), and Columbia (33%), Uruguay (33%) and Chile (31%) were the only others above the global average of 30.42%. It wasn't all doom and gloom as that latter number was a size-able decrease on the 2013 average, according to Panda Security. As a way of comparison the US had a 28.96% infection rate, whereas in Australia the rate dropped to 25.28%. Among the trends, the security firm expects 2015 will include growth in Cryptolocker attacks, advanced persistent threats (APT), targeted attacks, plus the continued targeting of smartphones, Internet of Things devices and point-of-sale terminals. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/internet/Netflix-mwc/Netflix-Loft-470-75.JPGFar away from MWC 2015, Netflix made camp in an airy loft, and tempted us over from Barcelona's urban sprawl with the promise of things to come. One of those things was something we'd dearly hoped for - a long awaited update to the Netflix iPad and web client user interfaces. There are a number of changes currently being tested. The first is a smaller update. When you select a title, Netflix will immediately start playing the content, with the usual information overlay. After a few seconds, that information will fade away, leaving you to watch your show. That's cute, but that iPad redesign is the big news. And here it is. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/internet/Netflix-mwc/Netflix-iPad-2015-420-90.JPG As you can see, the vertical box-shots are gone and replaced by multiple rows of content, similar to the excellent Xbox One app. On trendKeep scrolling and you'll see more recommendations based on your viewing habits. The UI now presents a hierarchy of recommendations, championing the top one with much richer imagery. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/internet/Netflix-mwc/Netflix-iPad-close-420-90.JPG The web client has had a similar redesign too. If you're starting to get excited, just hold on a second, because there's a caveat: Netflix will only implement this across the board if it passes user testing. For example, a small percentage of Netflix users are currently getting a 'Trending Now' selection, and their activity is being monitored. If those users show a decrease in usage - fewer minutes watched per session, less time spent on the service in general, that sort of thing - Netflix says it will take those improvements back to the drawing board, or perhaps scrap them altogether. That includes big UI updates like that proposed for the iPad. So basically, if users don't like it, Netflix won't roll it out, and you'll never see this layout again. Testing time"Two or three years ago, we tried a whole new kids experience. We were so excited, all these bells and whistles, it was great. [it was a] total failure. Less streaming. Worse retention. Total bummer," says Todd Yellin, Netflix's man behind Product Innovation. "We just want to drive a business, and we're not going to let our egos get in the way. So all that code and all those months, we threw it out of the window." http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/internet/Netflix-mwc/NEtflix-mobile-range-420-90.JPG It's the opposite end of the spectrum from Steve Jobs famous 'people don't know what they want until you show it to them' line, which is fascinating for such an innovative company. But as Yellin says, that's a hardware-centric philosophy, and there's no honour in "jumping the gun" - if users don't want it now, Netflix doesn't want it either. In addition to possible updates, Netflix has loads of original content on the way too, including the new Daredevil collaboration with Marvel, the Wachowski's Sense8 and a trio of Adam Sandler movies, and plenty more thanks to partnerships with Sony Pictures, Dreamworks and others. http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/44061cee/sc/4/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/222166799275/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/44061cee/sc/4/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/222166799275/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/44061cee/sc/4/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/222166799275/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/44061cee/sc/4/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/222166799275/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/44061cee/sc/4/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/222166799275/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/44061cee/sc/4/a2t.img

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/TRBC/blu-ray-disks-470-75.jpgBlu-ray disks are harbouring two dangerous exploits that would allow an attacker to potentially launch executables remotely using a disk drive. First reported by The Register, hacker Stephen Tomkinson found two separate vulnerabilities in Blu-ray disks involve the infamous piece of bloatware CyberLink PowerDVD and a rooting process that utilises an external USB. The first one takes advantage of a dodgy Java code implementation in PowerDVD. The PC program uses Java to play DVDs and create menus, and the unique way in which the code is used allows it to be exploited. The end result are executable files that can be easily put onto Blu-ray disks and then run automatically from the disk drive even though Windows usually prevents this from happening. Never use untrusted Blu-raysThe second exploit uses elements of hacker Malcolm Stagg's Blu-ray rooting process, which take advantage of debug code to launch from an external USB. Using this process, a Java Xlet to replay a TCP stream to the "net inf" daemon and this enables the Blu-ray disk exploit to take place. Attackers must know the DVD player model in order to carry out an attack on their chosen target and Tomkinson is advising users not to play Blu-rays from untrusted origins. Users should also prevent disks from auto-playing or accessing the internet at any time. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/other/Onetimers/google_wallet_update-470-75.jpgIt was just last week that we first heard rumors that Google was working on Android Pay, a new mobile payments platform, and now the search company has confirmed it. At MWC 2015 Google Senior Vice President Sundar Pichai said that Android Pay is not itself a direct competitor to Apple Pay, but an "API layer" that will enable third parties to build payments into their Android apps, reports The Verge. The iPad Pro: still a thing?"We are doing it in a way in which anybody else can build a payments service on top of Android," he said, mentioning emerging markets like China and Africa where he said there's room for "innovative services." Details are scarce, but Pichai added that Android Pay apps will use NFC and will eventually include support for biometrics, like the fingerprint sensor Apple Pay uses for security. He also confirmed that, as suspected, Google Wallet will continue to operate separately as its own mobile payments platform. It's unclear exactly when Android Pay will launch, but we'll keep an eye out for more news. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/TRBC/Abstract/Apps%20on%20tablet/iStock_000019925348Small-scanrail-470-75.jpgMobile applications that rely on the availability of networks to connect to cloud-based data will become a thing of the past. We spoke to Wayne Carter, architect at Couchbase, about storing data on devices when applications are offline, then syncing once connectivity is restored, and how this will change the way developers build mobile applications. TechRadar Pro: How will the business imperative for workers to be productive 'on the go' drive the mobilisation of business apps? Wayne Carter: Today it is rare that work is done exclusively at a single designated office or only with company-sponsored computer environments. With the rise of BYOD, workforces are more flexible and mobile, managing their work from both their company devices as well as their own devices. This development brings along challenges that need to be taken into consideration by companies, for example: creating a secure process in a multi-device work environment, finding productivity applications that are flexible and highly reliable, and still adequately address the work concerns they intend to resolve. Up until now, the internet and Software-as-a-Service products have been a vital factor in making this mobile strategy work. But how many of us have found ourselves without any reception and therefore with no access to our productivity applications? The next step in the mobilisation of business apps must be independence from these network-only strategies to provide always-on applications. TRP: What more can be done to allow remote workers and mobile users to access their application wherever they are? WC: Applications have to be flexible with their network requirements and still be productive. So far, synchronisation of data shared between the cloud and the device required an uninterrupted internet connection. In order to create a truly mobile workforce, a productised solution is necessary to allow a constant presence of data, meaning a system that has synchronisation, remote storage and local storage solutions that works even with intermittent internet access. TRP: What are 'always-available' mobile applications? WC: Always-available mobile applications are apps that work regardless of network presence. With always-available applications, users do not need to be connected to the internet all the time to be able to access their mobile applications. In the past, most mobile applications have relied on a remote data strategy that is based on data existing in the cloud. To access this information applications needed a network connection. This approach put them at the complete mercy of the network and resulted in applications that are only available and responsive when they have a good connection. For example, users wouldn't be able to check Facebook updates when on the London underground. TRP: How can technology overcome the dependence on network connectivity? WC: The answer is to create an ultra-lightweight local database to offset network unavailability, as well as an advanced mobile data sync technology to coordinate the local database with a larger aggregate backend. Today's mobile apps leverage rich data sources via open RESTful APIs that enable developers to tap into rich databases of data (predominantly in JSON format). As, by nature, mobile apps are more data driven, continuous access to content is what really makes a difference to the user. One solution to circumvent unreliable network connections is to implement some amount of offline support in the app. This means using local data storage within the app to capture and store app data while offline, and then sync this data back to the cloud when online. This allows users to continue using an application, accessing, modifying, and sharing information without being affected by network connectivity and speed. The app just works. TRP: How does embedded NoSQL change the game by storing data locally? WC: Much of the new data is unstructured, so developers need a database that is capable of efficiently storing it. The rigidly defined, schema-based approach used by relational databases makes it impossible to quickly incorporate new types of data, and is a poor fit for unstructured data. NoSQL or non-relational databases are able to process large quantities of disparate data. These large volumes of unstructured data require the highest level of scalability, performance, and reliability. An embedded full-featured NoSQL database on the device in combination with a highly scalable sync tier and a highly scalable, high performance NoSQL database in the cloud enables developers to produce rich mobile applications that are always accessible, and not affected by network availability or latency. TRP: How will this simplify the needs of developers when it comes to building truly effective productivity applications? WC: Until now, mobile applications were built with the requirement that data must be stored in the cloud and then synced back and forth to the device. Mobile NoSQL database solutions that include an embedded database on device, give developers the tools they need to build always-available and always-responsive applications. Consequently, the network no longer impacts application performance. Couchbase Mobile provides mobile application developers with a powerful new platform for creating robust and network-flexible applications, simplifying the code needed to manage data synchronisation and considerably reducing time to market. TRP: What are the benefits of network-flexible mobile applications for businesses? WC: The benefits for businesses are clear: users are able to access their applications even if the network is unavailable. In return this means true flexibility for businesses as they can rest assured that their workforce will not be limited in their mobility, even when working remotely. When all has been said and done, network-flexible mobile applications mean two things for companies – higher productivity and efficiency. TRP: What does this development mean for the future of mobile data storage? WC: Unstructured data has exploded over the last decades, growing more than a hundredfold every ten years. Data volumes with more than 50GB per object require a new approach in data storage to support the value and richness of future mobile applications. As users have grown accustomed to interactive apps that react quickly to their actions, it is no longer acceptable for apps to freeze or be slow. In order to provide the best experience for both users and developers the location of mobile data will be essential. While remotely stored data still suffers in terms of responsiveness and availability as it depends on networks, an only-local data storage approach is only viable for applications that never need to share their data. If we want to make sure that a mobile data model is suitable for a large variety of applications, then a hybrid model is ideal. With a hybrid model, data is stored both on the device and in the cloud, which makes the data always available. Not only can the data be shared outside the device but intermittent access to a network allows the network to synchronise data and ensure consistent application responsiveness. http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/43f46f0d/sc/21/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/222166721154/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/43f46f0d/sc/21/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/222166721154/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/43f46f0d/sc/21/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/222166721154/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/43f46f0d/sc/21/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/222166721154/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/43f46f0d/sc/21/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/222166721154/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/43f46f0d/sc/21/a2t.img

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/TRBC/office-touch-470-75.jpgMicrosoft has sneaked out a small handful of new features of its Office touch productivity suite at MWC 2015. The additions are mainly cosmetic and will involve how both Outlook and Excel will look when Microsoft releases Windows 10 across its tablet and smartphone platforms later on this year. Microsoft was at pains to point out that Outlook is a lot more than a mail application and the tablet/mobile version will allow super-fast and seamless integration with other apps such as Word, PowerPoint and Excel. Excel, meanwhile, has been given a makeover with the app changing its spots when you move over to a new platform so that it is always at the best level possible and the additions include snap functions and smart scrolling to make inputting data easier. Users will also be able to change the Ribbon menu into something known as Palette and all features will scale up or down when certain devices are connected. Tell Me moreThere are also two completely new features in the shape of Insights and Tell Me. Insights lets users search for words or phrases by bringing in results from the internet and Tell Me is an intelligent search feature that users can utilise to search for and create commands. Universal Office Apps for Windows 10 got their first outing early last month and the desktop version of Office 2016, which has already been released as a technical preview, will also be released at some point in the second half of 2015. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/internet/Tinder/Tinder%20Plus-470-75.jpgAs expected, Tinder has launched its premium subscription service, called Tinder Plus. It lets you search for people in other locations, enables the ability to 'undo' some of your swipes, and will save you from in-app ads once they eventually roll out. The price for all this is a reasonable £3.99 per month in the UK... as long as you're under 28. If you're not then the cost rockets up to £14.99. Prices in other countries are yet to be confirmed, and are likely to vary. If you like the sound of unlimited swipes and the option to undo your mistakes then you can sign up for a premium subscription from within the app. The demo video put together by Tinder certainly makes it look appealing. Is the tiered pricing structure a fair way of attracting a younger and less affluent userbase? Or an unacceptable slight on those of us who are getting on a bit? Let us know your thoughts. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/events/AAvents/Windows%2010/windows10-spartan-470-75.jpgInternet Explorer is the past - Project Spartan is the future. Microsoft's super-fast, clutter-free browser for the future is on its way and the Redmond company has just confirmed you'll be able to try it out yourself in the next preview release of Windows 10. When exactly that's going to drop is a matter of some speculation, but most rumors point to the end of this month, or perhaps even sooner. Microsoft's Kevin Gallo made the announcement at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. We also saw a brief demo of Spartan running on a Windows Phone device at MWC today. It looks very similar to the desktop edition, as you would expect with Microsoft aiming to stretch the same Windows 10 apps across all devices and screen sizes. This is SpartanSo what can you expect from Project Spartan? The browser sports a darker, simpler skin and accepts pen and keyboard input right out of the (virtual) box. You'll be able to mark up web pages and share your notes with others. There's a reading mode, as with most other browsers, and offline support for caching sites if you want to catch up with your reading while you're away from a data connection. Cortana is directly integrated with the software, as you would probably expect, and Microsoft is working on getting the desktop version ready before it rolls it out to phones. Once the next Windows 10 Preview arrives, it will have a whole new army of beta testers to help out. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/TRBC/Software/Microsoft/clutter-470-75.jpgIntroductionKeeping spam out of your inbox isn't easy – around 99% of all the email messages sent are spam and even if only a few get through, they're annoying and can be dangerous. Those iTunes receipts and PayPal account warnings you weren't expecting are often trying to slip malware onto your system. But legitimate email you don't actually need to read is also a huge drag on productivity. Whether it's newsletters you didn't sign up for (often known as bacon, because they're tastier than spam) or the endless discussion about where to have the team lunch this week, irrelevant email is why so many employees would rather use social media or messaging services. Cutting through the ClutterTo stop people abandoning email in frustration, Microsoft launched a new feature called Clutter as part of its Office 365 cloud service, and this files away messages it thinks you don't need to read using machine learning to simulate your world – and what you care about. "We're trying to address the biggest pain point in email, which is information overload," John Winn of Microsoft Research in Cambridge told us. "This causes the most pain, because when you have so many emails coming in to your inbox it's difficult to focus on the high priority email – the ones that you need to take action on." The problem is that what's interesting to you might be clutter for me, unlike spam. "What's spam for you is spam for me," Winn points out. "Clutter is a very personalised model; it's about learning which emails are low priority and which are high priority for you, because the same message can be high priority for one person and low priority for another person." "We learn from the signals you provide just by working normally; what messages do you read, what do you reply to, which do you forward? Which are likely to be of interest, actionable or high priority? And messages that aren't any of those can be removed and placed in a 'next door' inbox you can look at any time you want." Seamless systemIt doesn't need a special client the way Gmail's Inbox does, because it just happens in Exchange – and you can look at your normal email and your Clutter-filed mail in any mail client, because it's just a normal folder. Clutter gets information from the Office graph as well as from the email message itself. It looks at who sent the message, whether it's sent just to you, or if you're only on the CC list, as well as examining the words in the body and subject, and the Office graph tells it how you treated the email – whether you replied to the message or forwarded it, whether you deleted it or moved it to another folder or marked it as unread, and how long you spent reading it. "We match those signals from the email and your behaviour and we take a fresh email and say, 'what is the likely behaviour? Will you read it urgently or ignore it?'" explained Winn. Cleverly, Clutter takes into account that you don't always treat email the way you mean to. For a start, it waits up to a week before saying you've ignored a message (because you might just be busier than usual), but if you take an action like replying or deleting, it can take that into account straight away. If you're on holiday and you're treating email differently – not replying to messages that would otherwise be urgent – it models that as well. Bring the (label) noiseThere's also a concept called 'label noise'. This pertains to "when your actual behaviour differs from your ideal behaviour – when the action that you should take or maybe the action you intended to take isn't what you do," Winn explained. "You intend to reply but you don't; or you reply to another message from the same person instead, because it's the most recent mail from them. We explicitly model those behaviours." The idea is to make Clutter accurate and sensitive to the subtle nuances of the way we handle email – and to do that without a mass of complicated machine learning code for all these special cases that would make it hard to maintain. It works by using all the information from Exchange and the Office graph to build a probabilistic prediction model that simulates what you'll do when you get a new email. Unlike older systems that keep the whole model in memory – which slows things down – Clutter uses Microsoft's Infer.NET compiler. It runs fast enough to handle the petabytes of information in Exchange, and adding the idea of 'label noise' to explain unexpected user behaviour takes only a few lines of code. This also made it easier for the MSR team to work with the Exchange group. "In the early days we would talk the Exchange team through our program and what assumptions we were making and they could easily see what we were doing. And they'd say 'that's not right! We know users do this in Outlook, not that' and we could quickly go back and modify our model of what a user does," Winn told us. No interferenceThis approach is one of the reasons that Clutter became a feature when other ideas the researchers had come up with in their four years of working with the Exchange team didn't get anywhere. "We've been exploring a number of different ways that machine learning could work in the inbox," Winn said. "Only with Clutter did we feel we'd got something that can really add value, and not be in some way creepy or have the negativity you can sometimes get when you start applying machine learning to personal email." We may all complain about email, but people quickly get unhappy if their mail system 'interferes' with their messages – and gets it wrong. So far Clutter is well received – and Winn hopes to extend it beyond email. "The opportunity is very broad. We're looking at other applications in Microsoft products. Some I can't talk about, but there are some already in the Azure ML service and we're actively working with both Exchange on future work with Clutter and with other product teams on using probabilistic predictions in other products." One possibility is working not just with the structured information in the email header but also the unstructured information in the message itself. Winn calls unstructured text "the last uncomputable data – it isn't easy to compute with, so it tends to just sit there." The latest version of Infer.NET is better at working with unstructured text, like the content of email or Office documents. That means in the future, Clutter might be able to understand what a mail message or attachment is about, to decide if you'll be interested in it – and that would be much more accurate. 12 things you should know about email, spam and file attachmentshttp://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/43f1a440/sc/4/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/222166711193/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/43f1a440/sc/4/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/222166711193/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/43f1a440/sc/4/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/222166711193/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/43f1a440/sc/4/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/222166711193/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/43f1a440/sc/4/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/222166711193/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/43f1a440/sc/4/a2t.img

http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/Watches/BBM%20Android%20Wear-470-75.jpgGather round, because BlackBerry has some new features to talk about for its BlackBerry Messenger platform, and they're pretty handy ones as well. Firstly - as was hinted at in January - it now supports Android Wear devices. That means you can not only view but also reply to and start conversations from your wrist-worn gadget. It's now possible to send messages using your voice or pick from a list of preset responses. There's also support for Touch ID in the latest version of the app for iOS, so you can unlock access to your account with a well-placed finger on your device's Home button. BBM subscriptionsBlackBerry is also introducing some subscription options for serious users. For US$0.99 a month you can remove ads and sponsored invites from your feed, while US$1.99 a month gets you a custom PIN (alanjones rather than 2668C1AD, for example). "We've made tweaks and squished bugs, resulting in the fastest and smoothest BBM experience yet. I think you're going to love it," writes BlackBerry's Jesse Ariss on the company blog. Another small but helpful upgrade is the introduction of support for photos in group chats. Updates for BlackBerry 10 and Android are going to roll out tomorrow, while an iOS update is due "soon". http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/43f1a44b/sc/21/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/222166711192/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/43f1a44b/sc/21/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/222166711192/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/43f1a44b/sc/21/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/222166711192/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/43f1a44b/sc/21/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/222166711192/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/43f1a44b/sc/21/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/222166711192/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/43f1a44b/sc/21/a2t.img
