  2. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/mobile_phones/OnePlus/OnePlus%20One/Review/Handset%20pictures/Front%20blue-470-75.JPGThe OnePlus One was one of TechRadar's favorite Android phones of 2014, and it's scheduled to be upgraded to Android 5.0 Lollipop this month. Its creators have promised a stable build of Lollipop for the One will arrive in February, and to kick off the month they've released a teaser video showing the update in action. This is what's happening at GDC 2015Unfortunately a good chunk of the video is spent demonstrating Android Lollipop's Flappy Bird easter egg, something that's already been well documented. For the full OnePlus One Lollipop experience we'll have to wait until later this month, but at least it's "almost here," as the video's description reveals. 3. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/DOWNLOADS/roundups/2015-Jan/Windows-8-apps/win8_classicshell-470-75.jpgWhisper it quietly, but Windows 8 does not deserve all that wailing, gnashing of teeth and tearing at hair. There's a lot to like about it – particularly when you strip out the frankly awful Metro part of it. And with all the recent talk of Windows 10, we thought we'd take a look at how you can turn Microsoft's latest release into the OS it should have been. So join us as we reveal the best free tools for smoothing the sharp edges of Windows 8 and 8.1 by restoring missing features and hiding the less palatable parts of Microsoft's brave, but failed experiment. Install these and you'll wonder what the fuss was about. Classic ShellRestore the Start menu to Windows 8 with this essential tool. The biggest mistake Microsoft made with Windows 8 was losing the Start menu. The Quick Access menu (press Windows key + X) just isn't the same, so why go without when you can get a perfectly functioning Start menu for free with Classic Shell? http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/DOWNLOADS/roundups/2015-Jan/Windows-8-apps/win8_classicshell-420-90.jpg Just remember to remove Classic Explorer and Classic IE9 during setup so only the Classic Start portion is installed – once it's in place, click the Start button on the Windows desktop to set it up. The end result is a perfectly functioning Start menu in the guise of Windows 7 or XP – whichever you prefer. VLC Media PlayerPlay video DVDs (and just about any other video format) in Windows 8. Windows 8 dropped support for DVD playback – apparently the licensing costs aren't economical with more and more people switching away from traditional platter-based movie watching. Codswallop says we, seeing as VLC Media Player lets you watch DVDs (and indeed just about any other video format you can throw at it) for free. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/DOWNLOADS/roundups/2015-Jan/Windows-8-apps/win8_vlc-420-90.jpg Once installed, just pop your DVD in the player and VLC Media Player will do the rest. One tip – make sure you choose Tools > Preferences > Video and set Deinterlacing to Automatic for the best quality picture. XBMC LiveRestore your PC's media centre functionality with this brilliant tool. Missing Windows Media Center? No fear, XBMC Live (now known as Kodi) is the perfect replacement, providing you with a configurable and TV-friendly frontend for all your media: photos, video and music. You don't need to store your media locally either – if it's stored on a DLNA-compatible media server, then XBMC Live can access it too. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/DOWNLOADS/roundups/2015-Jan/Windows-8-apps/win8_xbmc-420-90.jpg Better still, pair it with MediaPortal and a suitable TV tuner stick and you can also use XBMC Live to watch and record live TV, ensuring you don't miss out on any of the functionality taken away by those spoilsports at Microsoft. Metro UI TweakerTweak various Windows 8 settings to suit your personal taste. Metro UI Tweaker helps tame Windows 8 in four ways: first, it allows you to disable the new Start screen if you really hate it, ensuring you'll always boot to the desktop. Conversely, if you're a fan of the Start screen, but missing certain functionality, then the app also allows you to add selected power options back to the Start screen as well as your choice of application or file. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/DOWNLOADS/roundups/2015-Jan/Windows-8-apps/win8_metro-420-90.jpg Most of these features are redundant after changes made in Windows 8.1, but there's one final bonus: the app's ability to remove the ribbon from File Explorer – perfect for those who prefer the old way of browsing their files and folders. System ExplorerGive the Windows Task Manager a shot in the arm with this powerful tool. Windows 8's Task Manager is a vast improvement on what went before – click More Details to access its full gamut of features. But if you want to go even further, then System Explorer is the perfect complementary tool, filling in gaps still missing from Task Manager. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/DOWNLOADS/roundups/2015-Jan/Windows-8-apps/win8_sysexplorer-420-90.jpg One of its best features is the ability to run a security scan of individual processes or all running tasks, comparing them with an online database to verify you've not been compromised. It also colour-codes intensive processes, helping you identify resource hogs more quickly, and consolidates tools and options spread out over multiple tabs in Task Manager in a more user-friendly environment. ListaryFrustrated with Windows Search? Listary puts all your files at your fingertips. The built-in Windows search tool has never really inspired, but Windows 8 managed to go backwards, removing the unified search tool in favour of a category-based option. Five minutes with Listary, however, and you'll never look back. It works with File Explorer and any program's Open/Save dialogue, placing a handy – but discreet – search bar at the bottom. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/DOWNLOADS/roundups/2015-Jan/Windows-8-apps/win8_listary-420-90.jpg Simply type what you're looking for into here and Listary will find matches across all your drives breathtakingly quickly. It's also packed with other time-saving features, like the ability to switch an Open/Save dialog to the folder you've currently got open in Windows. And with access to Favourite folders and past searches, what's not to like? FreeFileSyncKeep files in sync across two directories – just like Briefcase (but better). It had its flaws, but the Windows Briefcase could be useful at times, particularly in a pre-network age when keeping two folders in sync could be tricky. The Briefcase has been dropped from Windows 8, and while you can restore it with a Registry tweak, it doesn't work as it should. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/DOWNLOADS/roundups/2015-Jan/Windows-8-apps/win8_filesync-420-90.jpg Thankfully there's a better alternative: FreeFileSync makes the whole process of file and folder synchronisation much easier. It works with USB thumb drives as well as over the network, can copy locked files and automatically detects moved and renamed files and folders for hassle-free sync. It'll even allow you to store older versions of files you've updated (or deleted), just in case you need them. VirtualBoxDon't leave your old programs behind with this virtual machine. Windows 8 drops the compatibility XP Mode found in Windows 7 Pro, which allowed users to run older apps and hardware in a virtual instance of XP if they refused to play ball in Windows 7. Thankfully, VirtualBox gives you this functionality – and then some – in all versions of Windows 8. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/DOWNLOADS/roundups/2015-Jan/Windows-8-apps/win8_virtualbox-420-90.jpg It lets you install an older version of Windows (anything from 98 to Windows 7), meaning it's more flexible than XP Mode. All you have to do supply your own copy of the older version of Windows and your old favourite apps will be accessible once more. http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/42fd8dd4/sc/4/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/219132628531/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/42fd8dd4/sc/4/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/219132628531/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/42fd8dd4/sc/4/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/219132628531/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/42fd8dd4/sc/4/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/219132628531/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/42fd8dd4/sc/4/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/219132628531/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/42fd8dd4/sc/4/a2t.img

  5. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/desktop_pcs_and_macs/Mac/5K%20iMac%202014/5K%20iMac-02-470-75.jpgAutomator is one of those apps that, for most Mac users, lurks in the Applications folder and never gets used. It has a cool robot icon, but as soon as you launch the app, it immediately asks which type of document you want to start with (from a selection of eight). Whatever you click, you're then faced with a column featuring dozens of actions, from a variety of categories. It doesn't have the intuitive, welcoming feel of Apple's more popular apps. The thing is, Automator is as cool as its icon promises it to be. Once you get the hang of it, you can use the app for creating workflows and miniature apps, which can save you time when performing repetitive tasks. In this walkthrough I'll show you how to use Automator to quickly create an app that sets up a new email to a friend, which can be stashed in your Dock, ready for clicking at a moment's notice. I'll also show how to use Apple's Preview to create an icon from a photo that will fit right in with your other icons. Start small, build confidence, and the sky's the limit - as is the amount of time you'll save in the long run! 1. Get startedLaunch Automator and select New Document from the initial window. Automator's main window appears; select Application, then Choose. This means that whatever you now create in Automator will be saved as a standalone application. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Apple/Mac%20email%20shortcuts/Email%20shortcuts%201%20copy-420-90.jpg 2. Add an action The Automator sidebar contains a number of predefined actions, organized into categories. On selecting one, the available actions are filtered. Click the Actions button, then Mail from the Library. Drag New Mail Message to the workflow pane on the right. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Apple/Mac%20email%20shortcuts/Email%20shortcuts%202%20copy-420-90.jpg 3. Create an appDecide on whatever defaults you'd like for your message and add them. To just create an app that will start a message to someone, type their email address in the To field. Go to File > Save, name your app, and save it to /Applications, giving it the file format Application. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Apple/Mac%20email%20shortcuts/Email%20shortcuts%203%20copy-420-90.jpg 4. Test your appDrag your app to the Dock and then click it. It opens a New Message window, populated with the details you entered. However, the app's icon is a generic Automator one. We want to make something more personalized, but which still fits with OS X Yosemite. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Apple/Mac%20email%20shortcuts/Email%20shortcuts%204%20copy-420-90.jpg 5. Get some imagesIn your Applications folder, select an app with a circular icon and go to Edit > Copy. Launch Preview, go to File > New from Clipboard. Go to File > Export, and save as a PNG. Close the original icon and open your saved PNG. Find a personal image and open in Preview. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Apple/Mac%20email%20shortcuts/Email%20shortscutz%205-420-90.jpg 6. Crop your portraitOpen Preview's Markup Toolbar (using the relevant button), and select the Elliptical Selection tool. Hold ß and drag a circle. Fine-tune its position; always hold ß when resizing, to retain its proportions. When satisfied, click Crop (and Convert if asked to do so). http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Apple/Mac%20email%20shortcuts/Email%20shortcuts%206-420-90.jpg 7. Resize and pasteGo to Tools > Adjust Size. For Yosemite, make the width 830 pixels (for Mavericks icons, 870 is better), and click OK. Select all, then Edit > Copy; then paste the portrait onto your icon doc. Drag it into the center and position with cursor keys. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Apple/Mac%20email%20shortcuts/Email%20shortcuts%207-420-90.jpg 8. Use your new iconSelect your app in Finder, and go to File > Get Info, to bring up its info window. Deselect everything in Preview and then select all and copy. Back in the Get Info window, select the generic icon and paste your replacement. The icon and preview will update. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Apple/Mac%20email%20shortcuts/Email%20shortcuts%208-420-90.jpg Thinking about buying an iPad Air 2? 6. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/mobile_phones/Motorola/Moto%20G%202014/motog_lollipop_beach-470-75.jpgGoogle's monthly statistics regarding Android usage aren't usually very interesting, but the February numbers are notable for one reason: they mark the first time Android 5.0 Lollipop has made a blip large enough to be counted. That's the conclusion we have to draw, at least, though it also suggests that Lollipop adoption jumped a full 1.5% during the last month, which seems unlikely. The Samsung Galaxy S5 is getting its Lollipop updateAccording to Google 1.6% of Android devices have been upgraded to the latest version, which needed to be on at least .1% of devices for it to appear in the charts. That's what implies the big jump, although it's also possible that Google chose not to disclose the numbers before now for other reasons. Lollipop rollouts have increased lately, and maybe it's really as simple as that. In any case it's great to see the newest Android version finally registering a blip on the radar. The HTC One M8 is a stunning smartphonehttp://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/42f921e3/sc/28/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/218611363430/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/42f921e3/sc/28/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/218611363430/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/42f921e3/sc/28/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/218611363430/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/42f921e3/sc/28/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/218611363430/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/42f921e3/sc/28/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/218611363430/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/42f921e3/sc/28/a2t.img
  7. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/appliances/wink_smarthome-470-75.jpgCurrently a lot of people - one might even guess most people - are stuck with plain old dumb fridges that can't even connect to their smart home systems. GE will begin to remedy that with a test program that will see it sending 20,000 Wi-Fi modules to connect customers' existing refrigerators to their Wink smart home networks, reports GigaOM. TechRadar's iPhone 6 review leaves no stone unturnedWink, you may know, is a smart home system that lets users dim their GE Link light bulbs and more. The modules GE plans to send out will let owners of ethernet-equipped fridges built after 2009 connect them to the Wink networks in their homes. The companies reportedly have some ideas as to what these fridges might then be capable of, including notifying users if the door is ajar or the ice maker is full, keeping track of grocery lists, and telling family members what's OK or not OK to eat in the fridge. This is only a test program, but it sounds like it could lead to a wider rollout in the future, depending on users' feedback. What's the best Android phone? TechRadar tells all

  9. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/Streaming%20Services/Stan/Streaming%20comparison-470-75.jpg Intro, Price and DevicesNetflix is the leading internet TV service in the US, but as three other big companies enter the battle arena for 2015 there is some stiff competition shaping up down under. Information about the exact launch dates of Netflix and the content that it will be able to get the rights for in Australia, is still to be confirmed. with the official launch of Stan on Australia Day and the release of the Presto entertainment package only a week or so before that, most of the active players are still polishing their products and making changes. We will update the comparison as more device connectivity is rolled out and new content deals are signed across all four companies. In the meantime, this is TechRadar's best guess at how each of these subscription streaming services stack up on important points and which one you should keep an eye on on 2015. Price Stan $10 per month - 30 day free trial. Presto $14.99 per month - 30 day free trial - Option to only pay $9.99 for either the Movie only pack or TV only pack. Netflix has not officially confirmed its price tag though there are rumours that it will be $9.99. In the US users who signed up before May 9th 2014 pay US$7.99 per month, anyone subscribing after pays US$8.99. They also have an option for 4k subscribers at US $9.99. Quickflix $9.99 - 14 day free trial - This streaming service can be complemented by a standalone DVD delivery service at $12.99, which is $19.99 when combined with the streaming. Quickflix also has a premium service where you can purchase new release titles individually as a pay per view show. DevicesThe StreamCo protege, Stan, supports applications on tablets and phones for both iOS and Android. Stan can also can cast from a range of devices to the TV using a Chromecast dongle. Launching with Apple AirPlay enabled, you can even stream from your iPad or iPhone directly through the Stan application to your Apple TV. For Mac and PCs, the service is simply accessed through the Safari or Firefox browsers though unfortunately it is not compatible with Google Chrome. You can sign up to six devices on any one account and once this is full, swap over one device each month. There are no applications available on TVs or consoles just yet, though there are plans to develop these in the future. Presto unfortunately, does not support an app for smartphone devices, so you can only stream to your TV from iPads, selected android tablets and your computer using Chromecast. It is also possible to use your computer's AirPlay externally, to cast from your Mac to an Apple TV but this option is not optimised for Presto. There is a Presto Anytime app for your iPad, however you cannot use that to Airplay content to your Apple TV. There is a limit of four devices on any one account, after that you can again only change one device per month, though you can use 2 devices on each account to stream different programs simultaneously. So unless you plan on only using your computer to watch films, Presto is likely to be the most restricting in terms of useability. A new bundle that Foxtel released will see them offer internet and phone contracts through Telstra which has the bonus of free downloads for Presto content. This will likely be the first step in an entertainment ecosystem that somewhat explains the limited connectivity but doesn't excuse it. Quickflix is available directly through Samsung, Panasonic, LG and Sony smart TVs. It is also compatible with PS3, PS4, Xbox360 and also XboxOne. It's also available on a range of phones and tablets including iOS, both Google and Samsung Androids, Kindle Fire and Windows phone. On top of Chromecast, Quickflix can also be connected through media devices including TiVo, HUMAX, Kobo and Oppo. As it has been available in Australia for some time now, it is not surprising that this service has the most comprehensive device accessibility. Netflix has not released information on exactly which devices will be compatible in Australia at launch, but the US streaming service has stated that this list would include smart TVs, tablets and smartphones, computers and a range of internet-capable game consoles and set-top boxes from launch. With over 1000 compatible internet-connected devices in the US Netflix is likely to be more comprehensive than any of the Australian services. Kid's Programs and TV ContentKid's ProgramsStan's core children's programing comes from deals with Viacom, which has the rights to the Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. channels, and the ABC. Some of Viacom's kids programs include the hit shows Avatar: The Last Airbender; Octonauts, Ni Hao, Kai-Lan and Bubble Guppies and popular live-action shows like iCarly, VICTORiOUS, and Drake & Josh. There is also a decent collection of ABC favourites like The Wiggles, Dorothy the Dinosaur, Guess How Much I Love You and Justine Clarke and overseas titles that the ABC has the rights to like Octonauts, Angelina Ballerina, Bob the Builder, Thomas and Friends, Fireman Sam, Sesame Street and Mister Maker. The BBC also gives Stan access to the show Charlie and Lola and documentaries from David Attenborough. Stan is great for the kids in the TV section but it doesn't have the Disney movie titles that will be offered on Netflix and Presto. Presto - the Seven and Foxtel venture also has a content deal with Viacom so they share recognisable children's titles including SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora the Explorer and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Deals with other big children's program distributors Saban, DHX Media and Hasbro Studios add an extensive range of shows that are suitable for the whole family. It isn't just TV though, with a comprehensive selection of classic Disney films like Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, Toy Story and Tarzan complementing the newer family hits like Frozen, Ice age 2, UP, and A Night At the Museum. Overall Presto has hours of entertainment for the whole family. Quickflix has a decent collection of children's films, though most of them are older titles. There are also a few contemporary children's programs from the ABC and the BBC thrown in, but in terms of TV, it isn't thorough. Paddington Bear, Sesame St and 90s Australian young adult program Around The Twist are the type of programs that define what is available for kids on Quickflix. There are some great movies in there but on the whole there is less new content for kids to engage with than the other services we compared. Netflix had the movie premiere of DreamWorks Animation's The Adventures of Puss in Boots in January for their more established streaming regions around the world. The US streaming service is hinting that it intends to maintain its reputation for a solid level of kids content in Australia when it launches sometime in March. Netflix announced that it has deals with Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm for the distribution of children's titles in Australia. The US store even has specific settings so children can browse content by themselves without accidentally bumping into something inappropriate. ShowsStan has deals with Sony Pictures Television, CBS (includes SHOWTIME), MGM, BBC, ABC, Viacom and SBS and World Movies making its TV offering one of the most robust of the three live services. Mozart in the Jungle, Transparent and Better Call Saul are new and acclaimed TV titles that will be exclusive to Stan for the entire life of each series. There is also a good mix of popular and up-and-coming shows available on this service. Presto brokered a deal with HBO for its launch in 2015 which includes access to 13 popular premium shows. The latest seasons of Boardwalk Empire (currently only pay-per-view on Quickflix) will be exclusive to the Presto service. Presto has also confirmed a deal with Showtime giving subscribers access to shows like, Dexter, Californication, Deadwood and Ray Donovan. This content is complemented by selected shows from Seven West Media and Foxtel making Presto's selection decent, but still comparatively slim on its range of TV shows with notably less exclusive titles. Quickflix currently has back catalogues of HBO shows like True Blood, Entourage, The Sopranos and The Wire available on its subscription service. There are also BBC titles like Sherlock, Little Britain, Faulty Towers, The Office and Torchwood, SBS titles including The Killing and Wilfred and a huge range of films available on the $9.99 per month plan. Netflix has a large catalogue in the US but the rights to show those programs in Australia will have to be renegotiated. So far Netflix has announced shows including Marco Polo, Bloodline, BoJack Horseman, Virunga, Mission Blue and Uganda Be Kidding Me. Movies, Quality and VerdictMoviesStan's recent Roadshow Entertainment deal secured some desirable titles that are available immediately including The LEGO Movie and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, The Wolf of Wall Street, Edge of Tomorrow, The Inbetweeners 2, A Walk Among the Tombstones, John Wick, The Judge, and Australian films Wolf Creek 2 and Felony. The Imitation Game, the comedy St. Vincent and Golden Globe winning biopic Big Eyes will also be available later in the year. Stan already had a competitive lineup of titles from its MGM deal, that will see titles like The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, 21 Jump Street and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo appear on Stan. MGM will also contribute a number of classic films like When Harry Met Sally, The Silence of the Lambs, West Side Story and Four Weddings and a Funeral. Stan also has content from SBS World Movies including films from over 45 countries in more than 70 languages and big Australian titles like Animal Kingdom. Presto's movie service precedes the new Entertainment package and has already accumulated a decent collection of movies. Since the start of 2015, Presto has given its customers access to new titles such as Captain America: Winter Soldier, Thor the Dark World, American Gangster, Philomena and Layer Cake. The movie selection is decent and when you consider that it is the same price as the other services combined, it should be. Quickflix offers a somewhat eclectic mix of films under its streaming subscription service. Because there is a pay-per-view movie streaming option on Quickflix, the newest home rental titles are placed there first, meaning what ends up in the subscription movie basket is either good but old or seems as though it is really scraping the barrel in terms of quality. Because there's a tonne of films on there, this service is more suited to movie buffs looking for a comprehensive back catalogue of films rather than access to a few new release titles. Netflix has only hinted at a couple of titles that it will have on release in Australia, but from this selection it seems like it will be striving to secure films that subscribers will actually want to watch. So far the titles avalible in Australia in March include Marvel''s Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Saving Mr. Banks and Guardians of the Galaxy. Quality Stan has the option of using their automated bit-rate adaption technology which will peg the display quality to the speed of your internet connection. Alternatively you can choose to watch titles in HD, and SD if you're watching on portable devices. Presto only offers SD streaming making it lowest out of the four in the image quality section. Quickflix offers standard definition videos with HD options on selected titles. Netflix has said that it will offer HD options across the board and even 4K where available. Netflix will also have an automatic setting that will optimise picture quality according to internet speed. VerdictIf you are already subscribed to the Apple ecosystem and have an Apple TV and an iPhone, iPad or Mac, then it would be hard not to give the highest recommendation to Stan. Its compatibility with Apple products makes it easy to use and the service offers a good selection of titles from new releases to classics in both film and TV. Stan's design is focused on providing a solid movie and TV subscription streaming service that can be complemented by Apple TV's pay-per-view online movie store. This may change when Netflix releases in March but the service overall is in line with what we expect from streaming services overseas and makes for the most desirable new product in Australia. Presto has a great movie collection but it is hard to really experience the prestige of the titles on your television, not only because of the limited number of compatible device types but also because you can only watch in SD. Though Presto has a number of really great TV shows it is also slightly less extensive and has fewer exclusive TV shows than Stan. Combine this with a more expensive price tag and it is obvious that there are a couple of areas where Presto is not the leading streaming service. If you are not an Apple subscriber then Quickflix is probably not a bad option. It has a decent selection of TV shows available and there are apps for a heap of devices. The premium service means that if you really wanted to watch a particular show you have the option. Furthermore if you are an organised individual and don't mind the effort, forward planning and extra monthly cost required to have DVDs mailed to you, then you can actually save a decent amount of money on highly desirable shows like the Game of Thrones series. Purely in terms of its subscription streaming, Quickflix's TV selection is only slightly outweighed by Presto's but it is less far less impressive on the movie front. The fact that it is cheaper than Presto's combined option means that it is an option for a different type of user. If you have access to online movie purchases through another client, it's probably worth paying the extra five bucks for Presto's better movie and slightly better TV selection. Netflix will be the dark horse in this equation and the impending release in March means there should be a number of exciting announcements over the next month. If the US service is any indication, we are expecting it to be aiming for the top of the pile, trumping Stan with original content, 4K streaming and a bigger overall catalogue, though his is by no means a given. Stan has been working on original locally-produced content for some time and it has said that it is keeping an eye on the feasibility of 4K in Australia. It will also be interesting to see how Netflix goes securing content, considering there are now three active streaming services here. The fact that Netflix has sold the rights to its flagship titles House of Cards and Orange is the New Black to Foxtel means that it will have to scoop some decent titles to head up its launch if it is to resemble the US service. That said, it is worth some personal investigation into the content of each service as personal preference of shows is likely to be the determining factor. Stay tuned for updates on Netflix as they happen.

That's changing today with the introduction of third-party app cards in Google Now, as detailed in a Google blog post. Can the iPhone 6 compete?"Starting today, the Google app on Android can help you keep up with all the good stuff in 40 different apps at a glance," wrote Google Director of Product Management Aparna Chennapragada. The post gives a ton of examples, from Google Now cards with the latest news from The Guardian to cards with your daily language lesson from Duolingo. Other apps Google calls out specifically include Instacart, Pandora, Airbnb, Lyft, and more than 30 others. These new third-party Now cards will arrive on Android "over the next few weeks," Chennapragada wrote. What's the best Android phone? TechRadar rated the best gaming laptops top to bottomTo some that meant January, but with the first month of the year come and gone Belfiore has responded to users' concerns on Twitter. "Lumia icon people asking what I meant by 'early 2015': The first part of the year. In my mind that means jan/feb or so. Less likely March," he tweeted. "Know that Vzw & MS are actively, daily working on getting it done. The test process has unpredictability so we can't say a firm end date," he added in a subsequent tweet. So while the Lumia Icon Denim update might be pushed back to March, according to Belfiore a February release is more likely. Fingers crossed! The company today confirmed that the first- and second-gen Moto G have received their Lollipop updates in India, as was previously rumored, as well as in Brazil, but what about the rest of the world? Android 4.4 KitKat is still a popular versionThe company's latest blog post doesn't offer any predictions or promises, but it does try to explain why it takes so long for a new update to come out. "Though we try to make the process seem easy, it's actually pretty complicated," the post reads. "That's because we want to ensure a quality experience across every device that gets the upgrade." The processApparently Lollipop is "the biggest and most ambitious" Android release to date, and even though Google reportedly "improved" the release process with this one, it's still a slow process. It begins when Google releases the new version of Android to the Android Open Source Project - the "public push," in other words - and Motorola and other device makers begin testing it on various devices and carriers. Motorola then releases updates to small groups for testing purposes before wider release commences. The company encourages users still waiting for updates on their devices to check its software upgrades portal regularly. 13. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/TRBC/Software/Windows%2010%20Jan%202015%20Hands%20On/set%20notifications-470-75.jpgMicrosoft has just announced an enterprise update path for existing Windows 7 Enterprise and Windows 8/8.1 Enterprise customers. Enterprises will be part of the Windows Software Assurance program, bringing more flexibility to how Windows 10 is managed and deployed as Windows becomes a service. Unfortunately, participation in the Window Software Assurance (SA) program means that businesses will not be offered the same free upgrade path to Windows 10 for the first year of release that's part of the consumer release. With the SA program, Microsoft is allowing enterprise customers and partners more flexibility and control on how updates are applied and deployed. While consumers expect the latest software updates automatically pushed to their devices, businesses require more control to see how the updates impact their software, systems, and networks. Long Term Servicing branchMicrosoft will provide Long Term Servicing branches "at the appropriate time intervals" for mission critical environments that require strict change management policies, like hospital emergency rooms, air traffic control towers, and financial trading centers. Through Long Term Servicing branches, Microsoft is able to deliver security and critical updates while minimizing changes to customers devices by not delivering new features for the duration of mainstream or extended support periods. Enterprises can choose to deploy security updates and fixes through Windows Server Update Services, giving them full control using management solutions like System Center Configuration Manager, or to push these updates automatically to devices using Windows Update. Organizations will be able to easily move between different Long Term Servicing branches or skip a branch by using in-place upgrade technology in Windows 10. New features will be available at appropriate time intervals to add new functionality. Current branch for BusinessWhile some enterprise devices need strict management in mission critical environments, there are also many end user devices that do not need the complexity of Long Term Servicing. "Many IT organizations have told us they would like to get out of the business of managing end-user devices," Microsoft says. "They are looking for ways to keep devices up to-date with more discretion than simply treating them the same way they treat consumer devices." To meet these needs, Microsoft is creating a Current branch for Business. Devices marked for the Current branch for Business will receive updates for new features "after their quality and application compatibility has been assessed in the consumer market, while continuing to receive security updates on a regular basis." IT administrators could choose to automatically push these updates through Windows update or through WSUS. Administrators can also move devices between Current branch for Business and the Long Term Servicing branch. Compatibility and availabilityMicrosoft says that its goal is ensure that apps will just work and that the company is working to ensure that there will be compatibility between Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10 apps. Microsoft is also incorporating compatibility at the hardware level to make upgrading easier. The company says that Windows 10 will have the minimum hardware requirements as Windows 7 and Windows 8, meaning that your enterprise can upgrade to the latest edition of Windows on existing hardware. Microsoft will be making its enterprise Long Term Service branch available in the same time frame as when Windows 10 arrives for the consumer market. But with an ever-expanding contingent of installed programs and saved documents to sift through, that's often easier said than done. What you need is Launchy. This simple little app opens up when you hit Alt + Space and allows you to quickly search for the program you need – or the file, folder or bookmark, in fact. Launchy displays a list of matches that is automatically populated as you type, so it's not actually necessary to type the full name of the program before it appears. Highlight it and hit enter and Launchy loads it up, ready for use. It's very straightforward and easy to use, but should you want to do more then there are plenty of useful plugins to extend its functionality further. 15. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/other/superbowl-livestream-470-75.jpgCome Sunday, February 1, the NFL will have a new champion. Super Bowl XLIX, starring the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks, kicks off Sunday at 6:30 p.m. EST / 3:30 p.m. PST. on NBC. "Wait a minute," you say incredulously. "I thought the Super Bowl was only broadcast on Fox or ABC." Well it is, sometimes. But not this year. Every year the network rotates in order to spread the wealth amongst the top three biggest broadcast stations. But just because NBC's running the show, you don't need cable to watch the big game: Check down below for ways to watch with - or without - a cable subscription. Your best bet – NBC Sports Live Extra app or websiteIf you've got a desktop or laptop, I've got good news. All you need to do come Sunday is head on over NBCSports.com where the network will broadcast everything from pre-game coverage to the post-game wrap up in an 11-hour block. Tablet owners have it a bit harder as they've got to download the Live Sports Extra app from either the iOS or Google Play stores. Log in to the app on Sunday and you, my friend, are ready for some football. It's that simple. "Wait," here we go again. "If it's so simple why don't we do it all year round?" Oh you! NBC Sports typically locks this section of the website down during the NFL season, requiring you to enter in your cable provider information to get anywhere close to the gridiron. Everyday of the season, that is, except Super Bowl Sunday. This year the stream is not only free but, for the first ever, will include the halftime show featuring Katy Perry and special guest Lenny Kravitz. Having the rights to the music has always been a huge barrier to showing the spectacle, but it looks like NBC has made it happen for Super Bowl 49. Stick around after the game's done and you'll be able to catch an episode of The Blacklist before the service goes back under lock and key. A good backup - Verizon NFL Mobile appNBC, as powerful as it is, bends a knee to Verizon come Super Sunday. Verizon has exclusive rights to show the big game, along with commentary, behind-the-scenes interviews and four different cameras for replays, all on its NFL Mobile app. The problem however, is that you need to have Verizon's signature "More Everything Plan" to access the NFL Mobile app. The plan, for the most part, isn't costly ($45 a month for individuals and family plans for $140 a month), but unless you're the biggest fan of football in the world, upgrading your plan just to watch the game seems a little silly. OK, but what if you don't have a laptop or a desktop or a smartphone with Verizon service? We've got two more ideas for you. Make a friend at your local alehouse or watch the game with a buddy at their place. I mean, what's Super Bowl Sunday if you don't have someone to share it with? Image credit: Daniel X. 16. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/software/Best%20iPhone%20keyboard%20apps/iPhone_keyboard_header-470-75.jpgBest iPhone keyboard apps #1-5For years, iPhone, iPod touch and iPad owners have cast the green eye of envy in the direction of Android users, whose relatively more open operating system allowed for all manner of customization, including the ability to swap out software keyboards at the tap of a button. With the release of iOS 8, Apple has finally enabled third-party developers to do the same. Aside from a few notable limitations (no access to built-in dictation among them), iPhone users now have the freedom of choice, but how do you find the right fit? We tapped away at ten of the best third-party keyboard apps to find out what each has to offer, and our fingers still had enough energy left to type up our thoughts on which ones are worthy of the download. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Best%20iPhone%20keyboard%20apps/SwiftKey-420-90.jpg SwiftKeyOne of the most beloved Android keyboards finally comes to iOS, delivering the same great autocorrection and predictive typing capabilities in a long list of languages, not to mention the ability to type in up to two dialects at once for bilingual types. Our biggest complaint is the absence of audible feedback: there's no satisfying click when tapping the keys, an option that can be turned on or off on the Android Lollipop version. Also, theme junkies are likely to be disappointed by the lack of choices, since there's currently no way to buy others. Download this if... You're making the switch from Android Avoid this if... You like a lot of custom themes or noisy keys Verdict: 4/5 http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Best%20iPhone%20keyboard%20apps/TextExpander%203-420-90.jpg TextExpander 3TextExpander has saved us thousands of keystrokes on OS X Yosemite by abbreviating commonly typed words into easy-to-remember shortcuts that expand like magic when entered. The iOS version does the same for frequently entered greetings, email signatures and more, tapping into Dropbox to keep snippets synced with the desktop. One of our favorite TextExpander 3 features: the keyboard properly displays upper and lowercase letters, something Apple's built-in keyboard still hasn't managed to do after all these years. The keys are a little on the small side for our thick fingers, but otherwise this a flexible keyboard app worthy of a look. Download this if... You want to save keystrokes with shortcuts Avoid this if... You're on Windows or don't like smaller keys Verdict: 3/5 http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Best%20iPhone%20keyboard%20apps/Swype-420-90.jpg SwypeAnd rightfully so: there's exhaustive support for tons of languages (including emoji for six of them), a variety of keyboard layouts (QWERTY, QWERTZ and AZERTY) and the ability to add or remove words from a personal dictionary. Swype is also among the more customizable keyboard apps with five included themes, and a wide range of other colorful options available via in-app purchase. Of course, predictive typing is a given, and should you choose to tap on the keys instead, you'll get that satisfying click - along with the option to disable it in settings, should you prefer. Download this if... You believe "hunt and peck" are three dirty words Avoid this if... You'd rather type than swipe Verdict: 3.5/5 http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Best%20iPhone%20keyboard%20apps/Themeboard-420-90.jpg ThemeboardIt's hard to imagine any other keyboard app offering such an exhaustive selection of digits to fit nearly every taste or style, and we weren't able to find a lemon in the group. A built-in Emoji Bar makes Themeboard even more useful without having to switch to a dedicated emoji keyboard when the need arises. Themeboard hasn't overlooked the details, like three-speed quick delete which accelerates the longer the key is held down, and the ability to import shortcuts from Apple's own keyboard. With so many choices, there's bound to be something for everyone here. Download this if... You love variety and choice. Avoid this if... You already spend too much on in-app purchases. Verdict: 3/5 http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Best%20iPhone%20keyboard%20apps/Clips-420-90.jpg ClipsClipped content can include text or images, and the Clips keyboard can even be used to filter which type of data gets pasted. For example, copied web links can be pasted as just a URL or as plain text with the title of the linked page, making Clips a pretty functional little utility for all your clipboard needs. With a $1.99 in-app upgrade to the Pro version, Clips can even sync an unlimited amount of clipboard content across multiple iOS devices. And yes, before you ask, Clips also includes an actual keyboard, although the app is probably best used by switching between your favorite set of keys as needed. Download this if... Your friends call you "Cut & Paste." Avoid this if... You liked iOS better without copy & paste. Verdict: 4.5/5 Best iPhone keyboard apps #6 - 10http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Best%20iPhone%20keyboard%20apps/Fleksy-420-90.jpg FleksyThere are currently five Fleksy Extensions, with three available free. GIF Keyboard allows users to swipe up on the top row to send animated image files to friends, while Cursor Control adds the ability to long press on the spacebar to move the cursor left or right. Users can also type with one hand (a good option for iPhone 6 owners), add a row of numbers above the keyboard or make keys pop like the rainbow. The app also offers more than 30 themes (some based on hit movies like Frozen), more than 800 emoji, and rich support for languages and autocorrect. Download this if... You want to type one-handed on an iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Avoid this if... Your life is already complicated enough. Verdict: 4/5 http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Best%20iPhone%20keyboard%20apps/Hanx%20Writer-420-90.jpg Hanx WriterWith names like Hanx Prime Select, Hanx 707 and Hanx Golden Touch, Hanx Writer may seem like a clever gimmick to pay for a thespian's summer cottage, but for those who first learned to type on an old manual typewriter, it's a whole lot of fun and definitely stands out in a crowded market. Besides, how many keyboard apps include an honest-to-goodness word processor that rekindles memories of a bygone era at the same time? Sure, the keys may be a little cramped even on a spacious iPhone 6 Plus display, but this adorable app is priceless. Download this if... You love nostalgia, and/or Tom Hanks. Avoid this if... Retro really isn't your thing. Verdict: 3.5/5 http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Best%20iPhone%20keyboard%20apps/TouchPal-420-90.jpg TouchPalFirst up we've got TouchPal Curve technology, which is the developers' fancy way of saying users can slide their finger across letters to form complete words. Slide up for numbers, down for symbols and left to backspace over a whole word at once. But TouchPal is about more than just gestures: Award-winning predictive typing, plenty of color themes, rich emoji and language support round out the package, and where else can you customize a keyboard with gaudy fonts like Marker Felt? Download this if... You want the complete package in one free app. Avoid this if... You need more than six core languages. Verdict: 4.5/5 http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Best%20iPhone%20keyboard%20apps/GIF%20Keyboard-420-90.jpg GIF KeyboardOne of the more bizarre third-party keyboard apps we've run across, GIF Keyboard allows iOS device owners to search millions of GIFs across the internet, then send them using any app you'd like, right from the keyboard. GIF Keyboard supports all of the most popular messaging and social networking apps including iMessage, Twitter, Facebook and WhatsApp, and GIF files you discover while using the Safari mobile browser can even be saved to the keyboard using the Share extension. Users can even create entire collections of your favorites, and sync them across devices. Download this if... You just can't get enough GIF in your life. Avoid this if... The mere mention of the word "GIF" sends chills down your spine. Verdict: 2/5 http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Best%20iPhone%20keyboard%20apps/Minuum-420-90.jpg MinuumWhat really makes Minuum unique is a slick one-handed mode that can be used by righties or lefties alike, along with the ability to temporarily collapse the keyboard into a surprisingly usable "mini" mode with the flick of a finger. It's a pretty slick feature that makes Minuum stand out in the crowd. On the downside, this is the only keyboard app on this list that doesn't feature native iPad support. Of course, the usual complement of swipe gestures, keyboard sounds, punctuation shortcuts and automatic capitalization are also on hand, and if you're the kind of user who would prefer not to be bothered by autocorrect, Minuum also offers the ability to turn it off completely. Download this if... You want the maximum available typing space. Avoid this if... You have an aversion to paying for quality keyboard apps. 17. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/internet/heartbleed-470-75.jpgAnother vulnerability shocked the world of technology and the Linux community earlier this week. The Qualys security research team found a critical vulnerability in the Linux GNU C Library (glibc) that allows attackers to remotely take control of an entire system without having any prior knowledge of system credentials according to the security outfit. What does it mean for you as an Internet user and what does it mean for Linux system administrators? Was it really a shocking event? Here's everything you need to know in seven short questions. 1. What is "GHOST"? "GHOST" is the name of a vulnerability recently found in one of the key components of Linux systems. The component is the Linux GNU C Library that is used by all Linux programs. The vulnerability has been found in a function of this library that is used to convert Internet host names to Internet addresses. If an attacker found vulnerable software and a way to transfer a properly crafted host name up to this function then theoretically the attacker could take over the control of the system. 2. How widespread is it? This vulnerability affects almost all major Linux distributions, except a few such as Ubuntu 14.04. Millions of servers on the Internet contain this vulnerability. What does it mean? It means that the vulnerability exists on servers but there should be certain conditions met to render the server remotely attackable. According to Qualys' report, they have found an email server software called Exim that is remotely exploitable. There is no recent and full deployment share report showing how many public Exim servers are on the Internet, however it has a measurable "market" share but according to some old reports it's just a few percent. Note that to have an exploitable Exim-based email server one has to configure extra security checks for the HELO and EHLO commands of the SMTP protocol. Fortunately Qualys found that many well-known Linux-based web, email and other server software are not affected by this vulnerability like Apache, nginx, OpenSSH, syslog-ng. So we can say that apart from that the vulnerability could be found on many servers actually the remotely attackable share of these servers is low. 3. How can I secure my Exim email server? First of all deploy security fixes to all affected Linux servers as soon as possible. All major distributions have released security patches on the same day the security advisory published the vulnerability. Keep in mind that to make security patch effective all affected software has be restarted. Many distributions do this automatically during glibc update but many of them leave this job for you. Please make sure that your Exim server is restarted. This restart causes an SMTP service outage but normally this is only a few seconds and your email server users should not have any major issue because of this. If there was any ongoing SMTP connection – sending or receiving email – that would be aborted due to the restart and then the other side or the Exim will resend the email shortly. In similar cases the possible impact of an unplanned outage is much lower than the possible impact of a successful attack. 4. Could an attacker do anything else than just take control of an email server? There is no exact answer to this question. It depends on your deployment and configuration. If you use Exim just for front-end server as a smart host then the attacker can have access to your emails. If your email system is separated, and you do not store any credentials – passwords, SSH private keys, etc. – on the affected servers, then the impact could be relatively low. But if your Exim server hosts the mailboxes and/or has another server software on it then the attacker can have access to your data and in worst case to your other systems also. If you suspect that your server is attacked successfully, remove the server from operation immediately, plug out all network connections and execute your emergency plan. Do you have plans for such scenarios? You should... If you do not have such an emergency plan then maybe the easiest and most secure way is to reinstall the whole system. 5. Are my Linux servers safe now? If you deployed security patches quickly and you have checked that your server software were not affected and/or there is no sign of any attack then you can sit back. However we don't have information on all software mainly we don't know how much 3rd party software is affected. For example many email security, anti-spam software process email headers and take every Received: header line and they try to resolve host names found in these headers to check them against bad IP databases. So theoretically a specially crafted email message can contain exploit code. Of course this is only a speculation but it points out that we can never be cautious enough because sometimes the possible consequences of vulnerability cannot be predicted. It is better to take more attention to your servers, log files and web sites of your Linux distribution and also the web sites of vendors of any 3rd party software you use on your servers in the next few days to make sure that you do not miss anything important regarding this vulnerability. 6. Is there anything I can do to be prepared for future vulnerabilities? Just ask yourself: were you nervous after reading the security advisory about "GHOST"? If you just need to execute previously defined steps, such as updating your infrastructure, to make sure that your system is secure then you did a great job as you prepared. However existing processes and infrastructure can always be improved. Take this time and think about your systems and processes: - Is there a faster way to deploy security fixes?- Is there any unnecessary/unused service that you can shut down to minimize attack surface?- Is there any setting, functionality of any currently used software that you can switch off?- Are you subscribed to security advisory alerts? Did you receive "GHOST" alerts in time?- Is anybody watching security alerts 24/7 to take all necessary steps immediately when needed?7. What should I do as an Internet user? You cannot do much. You are unlikely to be affected by this vulnerability. There is a very small chance that an attacker could send you a fake email or catch your email via a hacked email server or access your personal information stored on a hacked server but the probability is low enough that you should not be worried. 18. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/cloud_services/Perzo/perzo-safelock-470-75.JPGWith Sony being the latest major victim of hacking, large organisations are witnessing yet again how data breaches cause serious damage to the tune of millions. The prevalence of hacking in the media begs the question: what's in store for 2015? Against a background of more frequent and dangerous XSS attacks, third-party code and plugins remaining the Achilles heel of web applications, and growing chained attacks, organisations will be looking to new ways to protect their online properties. Unfortunately, it's pretty difficult to make information security predictions, and even more difficult to verify them afterwards – we can only judge the effectiveness of information security by the number of public security incidents, as the majority of data breaches remain undetected. However, in this article we're going to make some web security predictions based on common sense profitability (profit/cost ratio) for hackers… 1. Vulnerable web applications will remain the easiest way to compromise companies When almost any company has one or even several vulnerable web applications, hackers will not bother to launch complex and expensive APT attacks with zero-day exploits. Companies continue to seriously underestimate the risks related to their web applications and website. A tiny vulnerability, such as XSS, can lead to the compromise of the entire local network, emails and databases of a company. 2. XSS will become a more frequent and dangerous vector of attacks It's very difficult to detect high or critical risk vulnerabilities in well-known web products (e.g. Joomla, WordPress, SharePoint, etc). However, low and medium risk vulnerabilities, such as XSS, will still regularly appear. Sophisticated exploitation of an XSS can give the same outcomes as an SQL injection vulnerability, therefore hackers will rely on XSS attacks more and more to achieve their goals. 3. Third-party code and plugins will remain the Achilles heel of web applications While the core code of well-known CMS systems and other web products are pretty safe today, third-party code such as various plugins or extensions remain vulnerable even to high risk vulnerabilities. People tend to forget that one outdated plugin or third-party website voting script endangers the entire web application. Obviously hackers will not miss such opportunities. 4. Chained attacks and attacks via third-party websites will grow Today it's pretty difficult to find a critical vulnerability on a well-known website. It's much quicker and thus cheaper for hackers to find several medium risk vulnerabilities and use a combination of these to get complete access to the website. Another trend is to attack a reputable website that the victim regularly visits. For example, when chasing for a C-level executive, hackers may compromise several high-profile financial websites or newspapers, and insert an exploit pack that will be activated only for a specific IP, user-agent and authentication cookie combination belonging to the victim. Such attacks are very difficult to detect, as only the victim can notice the attack. 5. Weak passwords and password re-use will remain a very serious problem Many people still use the same or similar passwords for all their accounts. Hackers cannot miss such opportunities and actively exploit this human weakness. The first step of attack is to identify all websites or blogs where the victim is registered or has an account. The second step is to select the weakest website from the list and to compromise it. Password encryption techniques commonly used in web applications today are far from being resistant, and a password in plaintext can be obtained pretty quickly. Even if the victim uses a very strong password and it's being properly encrypted in the database. hackers will just Trojan the web application to intercept the password in plaintext during login. The last step is to try the password for all the victim's accounts and resources. 6. Application logic errors will become more frequent and critical Examples with AliExpress and Delta Airlines highlight the impact of application logic vulnerabilities that are almost undetectable by automated solutions. Web developers have become aware about XSS and SQL injections flaws and code much better than before, however they forget about application logic vulnerabilities that may be even more dangerous than SQL injections or RCEs. 7. Automated security tools and solutions will not be efficient anymore Web Application Firewalls, Web Vulnerability Scanners or Malware Detection services will not be efficient anymore if used separately or without human control. Both web vulnerabilities and web attacks are becoming more and more sophisticated and complex to detect, and human intervention is almost always necessary to properly detect all the vulnerabilities. It's not enough anymore to patch 90% or even 99% of the vulnerabilities – hackers will detect the last vulnerability and use it to compromise the entire website. 20. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/software/cyanogen_logo_cid-470-75.jpgFor years CyanogenMod has been a popular alternative among Android users, and now Microsoft is reportedly investing big in the startup. Microsoft is investing $70 million (about £46m, AU$90m) in Cyanogen, which would leave it a minority shareholder, reports The Wall Street Journal. Microsoft already makes plenty of money off of Android thanks to complex licensing fees, so this probably isn't a cash grab. Android 4.4 was top cookie for a long timeRather, the idea is apparently to help wrest control of Android away from Google, as Cyanogen describes its mission. Taking controlMicrosoft desire to get in on this could stem from Google's insistence that phone makers include Google apps and search by default, which cuts into Microsoft's - and others' - ability to get their own apps featured on Android devices. The underdog Android alternative Cyanogen, which claims it has thousands of volunteers working on it, sidesteps that issue and others, making it a popular choice among certain users and companies. Yet it's still weird that Microsoft would flush a competitor with cash when its own mobile operating system - Windows for phones, no longer Windows Phone - is so up in the air. But Cyanogen is reportedly now working on deals with hardware makers to have its version of Android installed on devices by default rather than Google's, and it's obvious how Microsoft might benefit from that. 21. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/software/Apple/Yosemite%20Spotlight%20search%20tricks/spotlight%20intro%20-470-75.jpgSpotlight has gotten better over time, such as when when Quick Look made it possible to preview files selected within Spotlight results. OS X Yosemite brings more changes to the feature's functionality and visual design. Instead of a drop-down menu anchored to the OS X menu bar, Spotlight now opens in the center of the screen. And most importantly, Apple has greatly expanded the scope of what Spotlight can search for, and has even added a few fun tricks. You can fine-tune Spotlight using the Spotlight System Preferences pane. Select the Search Results tab and you'll see a list of categories Spotlight can find results for. Use the tick boxes to enable or disable categories according to your preferences, and drag the categories up or down to change the order in which they appear in search results. To get started, press Command + Space (or the Spotlight icon in the menu bar), and Spotlight opens up center screen. As you type, it will provide suggestions. To accept one, tap the right cursor key. You can add to your search term. Pressing Return will launch the top hit. Now let's take a look at all the cool stuff Spotlight can do! 1. Navigate and launchSpotlight is a great way to quickly launch apps, especially ones not in your Dock. Type an app name, and if it appears as the top hit, press Return to launch it. If it's not the top hit, continue typing or use the up/down arrow keys to choose another. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Apple/Yosemite%20Spotlight%20search%20tricks/spotlight%201-420-90.jpg 2. Preview itemsSearch for images, PDFs, and text documents, then use the cursor to select a file and Spotlight will show a preview. When previewing text, you should be able to make a selection and copy it to paste elsewhere. Also, hold Command to see the selection's path. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Apple/Yosemite%20Spotlight%20search%20tricks/spotlight%202-420-90.jpg 3. Access recent filesFor some apps, you can access recently opened files from Spotlight, with the files displayed in the preview area. Press the Tab key, then the up/down arrow keys to select, or just click one to launch the app and the document. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Apple/Yosemite%20Spotlight%20search%20tricks/spotlight%203-420-90.jpg 4. Perform calculationsIn Yosemite, Spotlight can now perform conversions. Type "50 yards" and you get conversions in meters and other units; type "60F" for the temperature in Centigrade and Kelvin; type "$10" for the equivalent in other currencies. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Apple/Yosemite%20Spotlight%20search%20tricks/spotlight%204-420-90.jpg 5. Find things onlineIf you're looking for information, type a search term and you'll get a Wikipedia link and synopsis; depending on the term, Spotlight may provide suggested URLs and Bing search results. Click the item to open it in Safari. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Apple/Yosemite%20Spotlight%20search%20tricks/spotlight%205-420-90.jpg 6. Search iTunes StoreSearches for media will return results for content on your Mac, and links to the iTunes Store – usually faster than searching iTunes itself. For example, type "R.E.M." and you get a link to the band's page; click a result to open it in iTunes. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Apple/Yosemite%20Spotlight%20search%20tricks/spotlight%206-420-90.jpg 7. Get something to eatTry typing the name of a cuisine and then "food" into Spotlight (such as "Indian food"). You should get a few local restaurants; details and direction buttons will be provided in the preview area. Famous locations may also pop up as results. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/software/Apple/Yosemite%20Spotlight%20search%20tricks/spotlight%207-420-90.jpg Read our iOS 8 review!http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/42d90ab3/sc/4/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/218611221114/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/42d90ab3/sc/4/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/218611221114/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/42d90ab3/sc/4/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/218611221114/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/42d90ab3/sc/4/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/218611221114/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/42d90ab3/sc/4/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/218611221114/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/42d90ab3/sc/4/a2t.img
  22. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/mobile_phones/Samsung/GalaxyS5/Hands%20on/P1060968-470-75.JPGBuying a new Samsung phone can be really exciting, but that excitement is also usually tempered by the realization that your brand new phone has dozens and dozens of bloaty crapware apps stuck on it forever. Samsung is by all accounts losing ground to Apple at landslide rates, though, and it's reportedly considering drastic measures to improve its user experience going forward - including ditching all that TouchWiz baggage on the Galaxy S6. TechRadar rated the best gaming laptopsSamsung began this process with the Galaxy S5, but the Galaxy S6 will be the most bloat-free of any Samsung phone in a long time, reports SamMobile. The company may even be eyeing Google's Nexus phones and tablets as a model for how to slim down the Android experience. Apps now optionalSome users definitely take advantage of the apps and settings that come pre-loaded on Samsung phones, and they'll likely still be available as downloadables, but they reportedly won't come out of the box on the S6. The more popular TouchWiz apps, like S Health, will probably even remain on the device, but overall the experience will be pretty slimmed down. Samsung is expected to debut the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S Edge at MWC 2015 in March. 23. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/cloud_services/Perzo/perzo-safelock-470-75.JPGWebsite attacks may go unnoticed for months as hackers steal confidential information. The financial losses and reputational damage from a potential breach are spurring organisations on to protect their web applications. Here we find out from Ilia Kolochenko, CEO of High-Tech Bridge and Chief Architect of ImmuniWeb, how to keep your website safe in 2015. How the security threat landscape is shaping up for 2015TechRadar Pro: What tools are organisations turning to in order to protect their websites? Ilia Kolochenko: When security breaches fill the news with stories of stolen customer data and website failures, organisations typically turn to automated scanners. And this overreliance on scanners is leaving organisations in a vulnerable position. Unfortunately, there is still a common misconception that fully-automated website vulnerability scanning brings the same results as manual web application penetration testing. TRP: Why do we still need manual penetration testing? IK: The need for human skills was recently demonstrated by a major new analysis (reported by Ars Technica) conducted by the universities of KU Leuven (Belgium) and Stony Brook (New York). The researchers tested websites "protected" with various trust seals provided by security vendors delivering automated vulnerability and malware scanning services – reputable companies including Symantec, McAfee, Trust-Guard, and Qualys. The research showed "that seal providers perform very poorly when it comes to the detection of vulnerabilities on the websites that they certify." This is a weakness inherent in almost all fully-automated solutions – they can only go so far before their output needs to be analysed by a qualified pentester (penetration tester). TRP: Tell us how vulnerability scanning works? IK: Vulnerability scanning can be very cheap or even free, while penetration testing can be considered quite expensive and time-consuming to plan and execute. However, penetration testing brings significant added-value in comparison to all types of malware or vulnerability scanning currently on the web security market. In fact, today almost anybody can do vulnerability scanning: you just need to download any of a number of vulnerability scanners – some quite excellent – and run them against a website. They will generate an automatic report providing numerous actual and potential vulnerabilities and weaknesses – and probably a number of false positives as well. False positives are time-consuming – you need to verify every single issue the scanner detects. Much worse are false-negatives – existing vulnerabilities that automated solutions miss, leaving systems vulnerable and giving website administrators a false sense of security. Some automated solutions may assign a medium risk to 403 or 500 error pages returned by the web server (that are not vulnerabilities, just error pages). Finally, website administrators, under strain from heavy workloads, start ignoring all medium-risk vulnerabilities from daily scanning reports. As a result they miss important information about real vulnerabilities that deserve their attention. TRP: Which companies should be using vulnerability scanners? IK: Security scanners are probably a must-have tool for large companies that perform some of security testing internally, relying on in-house security professionals who are capable of verifying and completing the results of an automated scan. Automated vulnerability scanning can also be very useful to keep internal teams up to date about the general state of their web applications. However, automated solutions and security scanners are not capable of replacing a penetration test. They are not suited for SMBs as well, neither for projects where companies need both rapidity and the highest quality of security testing. TRP: What are the advantages of manual penetration testing? IK: True pentesting starts from where a vulnerability scan finishes. A pentester will take the reports from probably several different scans and use his personal skills and experience to weed out the false positives, and identify missed vulnerabilities. In particular, he is likely to recognise the weaknesses in the business logic, which scanners cannot efficiently detect, and see how otherwise minor technical flaws can be chained together to effect a major breach. A recent example of application logic flaw is Alibaba's website, where a tiny bug exposed the most sensitive information of millions of users. Another recent example is a similar vulnerability in the Delta Airlines website, where URL manipulation allowed access to anyone's boarding pass. Another example of the vital need for a deep level of IT and security expertise comes with a scanner's discovery of a vulnerability. The vulnerability is probably already known to the security team and remains unpatched for a "good reason" – in some cases a patch for the vulnerability may threaten functionality of a critical business process. It is a frequent case in large companies, where many critical products are developed in-house or outsourced, and suffer from various compatibility issues that prevent systems being kept up to date. In this case, a scanner will probably just generate generic information about a patching technique. A qualified pentester, however, is capable of understanding the business needs and processes of the customer, and will probably suggest an appropriate solution that will not impact business continuity, and if not fix the vulnerability, then at least prevent its exploitation (by adding additional rules to the Web Application Firewall for example). TRP: How accurate are vulnerability scanners? IK: In our experience, most scanners can probably find only about 40-60% of the vulnerabilities in web applications. It's not a problem with the scanning technology – a scanner could probably be developed for a particular application, platform or framework capable of finding 99% of the vulnerabilities specific to the application. However, taking into consideration the great variety of web technologies that exist today, it is impossible to develop a universal scanner that will efficiently detect vulnerabilities in all types of web applications. Human expertise is required here. TRP: What are the limits for web penetration tests? IK: Web penetration tests also have their limits. For example they cannot prevent a website admin PC from being hacked, with the aim to steal FTP or SSH credentials to infect the website with malware later on. However, malware can be identified very quickly with daily malware scanning. Vulnerability scanning should be used for continuous security and integrity monitoring, while penetration testing should be used to properly identify all the existing vulnerabilities and weaknesses, and develop reliable fixes for them. This is where continuous daily monitoring combined with quarterly penetration testing is the most efficient and effective way to keep a website secure. TRP: Where do you see the future of web security assessment? IK: As a solution to the gap between automated and manual security testing, High-Tech Bridge has launched ImmuniWeb SaaS this year – a hybrid approach to web security testing. ImmuniWeb combines manual and automated web security testing suitable for all types of businesses, regardless of their size, geographical location or internal skills. The high speed and large-scale of automated testing combined with human expertise and experience accurately detects the most complex security flaws missed by scanners and other automated solutions. Moreover, ImmuniWeb auditors provide our customers with personalised solutions suited to their business and technical needs. http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/42d6f79e/sc/4/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/219132457566/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/42d6f79e/sc/4/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/219132457566/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/42d6f79e/sc/4/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/219132457566/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/42d6f79e/sc/4/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/219132457566/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/42d6f79e/sc/4/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/219132457566/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/42d6f79e/sc/4/a2t.img

  25. http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/art/mobile_phone_accessories/Oral%20B/SmartSeries%205000/mirror-470-75.jpgOral B's smartphone-connected brushTen out of 10 dentists agree: toothbrushes are getting smarter in 2015 thanks to the Internet of Things. It's giving otherwise dumb household electronics cutting-edge makeovers. Oral B's SmartSeries 5000 electric toothbrush is my latest gadget to go all Jetsons on me with smartphone syncing technology that goes way beyond my old manual toothbrush. It's more than just a pulsating brush with nifty lights. An iOS 8 and Android app coaches me all the way to the two-minute mark and tracks my brushing habits. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/mobile_phone_accessories/Oral%20B/SmartSeries%205000/brushing-app-420-90.jpg Okay, full disclosure, I love brushing my teeth and my father is a dentist and my sister is in training. But it turns out I had been brushing for an average of 46 seconds then flossing. That's actually the average time people brush their teeth, according to Oral B. The Procter & Gamble-owned company boasts that it's closer to 2 minutes and 22 seconds with its app. So I spent the month brushing up my act. Would brushing my teeth with my Samsung Galaxy S5 in hand and the free app provide me with feedback that Dr. Daddy Naziri failed to give? Here's what I found when I tried to realign my crooked tooth-brushing regimen with the Oral B SmartSeries 5000 while under a caring doctor's supervision. The setupThe price of a better smile in the case of this SmartSeries toothbrush is $199, even though it pretty much acts like every other other high-end electric toothbrush out there. It's complete with replaceable brush heads, a wireless charger, a blue hard plastic travel case and five different brush modes: daily cleaning, deep clean, whitening, gum care and sensitive. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/mobile_phone_accessories/Oral%20B/SmartSeries%205000/oral-b-smartseries-5000-420-90.jpg Of course, that's not what is special about this particular brush. The app component is what makes it a more intelligent toothbrush whenever it's paired up with an iPhone or Android. I found it easy enough to link to my smartphone once I downloaded the free app. It worked like any other Bluetooth-connected device thanks to a small pair button on the giant handle. After that first connection was established, every time I lifted the toothbrush off of the included charger, it automatically paired with my phone, eliminating one step toward a better smile. An app 3x a times a day...The toothbrush immediately began tracking my daily brush activity via the app: how often I was brushing, how long each session took and whether I or not I was doing it right. Meeting that dentist-recommended two-minute Crest tsunami three times a day was the first task on my tooth rehab checklist. Two minutes is longer than you think when you don't count. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/mobile_phone_accessories/Oral%20B/SmartSeries%205000/app-session-420-90.jpg My busy life sometimes (read: always) wants to cut it short and rush out of the bathroom, but the app did its job of motivating me to continue on to the full two minutes. Though it lacked puppy dog eyes, whenever I prematurely shut off the toothbrush, it guilted me into continuing with a 30-second timer. It'd reset to a new session after it reached zero. I'd always make the excuse that I was just taking a short break to add extra toothpaste for that lasting polish, and I followed through every time. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/mobile_phone_accessories/Oral%20B/SmartSeries%205000/oral-b-app-review-420-90.jpg My smartphone acted as a motivator as much as it was a "remote control" to watch the time and adjust to a custom target session length (I stuck with the normal 2 minutes). Fine-tuning the toothbrush even further, I selected my preferred mode (whitening, please) and could add +10 second "focused care" to 16 different places within its human mouth diagram. ...Keeps the dentist awayBrushing with the right technique was a little harder to stick to at first. Manual brushers almost universally use too much force in the transition to an electric toothbrush. I was already starting at a disadvantage. Alarmingly, too much pressure can strip your enamel, so that's why it's fitting that red alarms (but no bells) went off on the app and within the toothbrush handle whenever I used any force. I had to learn to let the brush do all the work or the app would freak out. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/mobile_phone_accessories/Oral%20B/SmartSeries%205000/app-complete-420-90.jpg This was such an important metric that, at the end of the two-minute session, the app added up all of the pressure-filled seconds and made it visually apparent in an animated timeline. In the morning and at night, it supplemented the numbers-heavy stats with reminders in the form of questions: did I floss, clean my tongue and rinse? It tracks these answers too. Plaques for getting rid of plaqueOral B's app gamifies brushing your teeth with stats tracked over time as if this were another fitness tracker that syncs with your smartphone. Digging into the menu, I found an Achievements pane that tracked my personal bests and awarded me a few trophies. My session length and brushing streak were counted in minutes and seconds, while the flossing, tongue cleaning and rinsing streaks were measured in consecutive days. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/mobile_phone_accessories/Oral%20B/SmartSeries%205000/toobrush-instructions-420-90.jpg Trophies for Early Riser, Power User and the platinum-level 365 Day Brushing streak are meaningless, but like accolades on PS4 and Xbox One, I kind of want to unlock them all. More significant down the road is ability receive dental care recommendations from dentists, including setting up reminders, focused care areas, custom timers and tips. This My Dental Professional menu is also a great in-app way of searching for a dental office, information that is pipe into the app via Google Places geodata. Getting clean can be messyOral B's SmartSeries 5000 isn't always squeaky clean outside of the mouth, as revealed by my sometimes toothpaste-spotted Galaxy S5. Taking my phone into the bathroom - which I refuse to admit ever doing before this - and holding it at eye level made it prone to splattering toothpaste droplets or pieces of dinner. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/mobile_phone_accessories/Oral%20B/SmartSeries%205000/oral-b-smartseries-5000-review-420-90.jpg Luckily, the brush worked even when my phone wasn't present for the two minutes. It pulses in the handle and shined a yellow flashing LED when it was time to switch to a new quad. In fact, the SmartSeries stored information on my last 20 sessions within the handle so that when I did finally connect with the app, my history was automatically synced. The only issue I had was with the charger. I needed to remember to bring it with on trips longer than a week. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/mobile_phone_accessories/Oral%20B/SmartSeries%205000/oral-b-app-420-90.jpg There were benefits to safely keeping my phone in my peripheral vision, though, as it communicated while it clean. It went beyond just issuing pressure warning too. The app tried to entertain me with weather forecasts, fun facts, oral tips, news headlines and even your calendar events so I don't get bored as I brushed. I was so engaged and distracted that I effortlessly tripled my usual brushing time after seeing phrases such as, "Get every tooth" or "Almost there!" pop-up at the bottom panel. http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/art/mobile_phone_accessories/Oral%20B/SmartSeries%205000/all-done-420-90.jpg Owning a toothbrush that syncs with my smartphone isn't essential to my health, but brushing better is just as important as every other Internet of Thing gizmo out there. Two minutes isn't a lot, but it's a lot easier with a little help from the Oral B SmartSeries 5000. It got me thinking about my brushing routine thanks to daily stats, reminders and yes, even achievements. I put it up there with the Nest thermostat and Nest Protect fire alarm. Even Dr. Naziri was surprised by the SmartSeries and how it can easily motivate and improve the younger generations' brushing behaviors and focus on problem zones within the mouth. After all, most of them already have their phones with them in the bathroom. http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/669/f/415085/s/42d56379/sc/4/mf.gif http://da.feedsportal.com/r/219132450948/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/42d56379/sc/4/kg/392/rc/1/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/219132450948/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/42d56379/sc/4/kg/392/rc/2/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/219132450948/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/42d56379/sc/4/kg/392/rc/3/rc.img http://da.feedsportal.com/r/219132450948/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/42d56379/sc/4/kg/392/a2.imghttp://pi.feedsportal.com/r/219132450948/u/49/f/415085/c/669/s/42d56379/sc/4/kg/392/a2t.img
