  1. The Google Pixel 4 is a secret no more. We know what the Pixel 4 will look like because Google itself has shown us. That's not because the Google Pixel 4 release date is just around the corner - we still fully expect the Pixel 4 launch to take place in October - but seemingly because the search giant doesn't want months of inane speculation of what its next phone will look like. It does, however, take away some of the excitement in the build up to the launch and eradicates the 'will it, won't it' debate on the overly square camera bump on the rear which is set to be a divisive look - but one which could be popularized by the iPhone 11 a month before the Pixel 4's announcement. Since its launch in 2016, the Pixel line has become a reliable tent-pole in the smartphone release calendar. Offering a suite of features with an almost unmatched level of software polish, the handsets have done a lot to earn the adoration of the tech community at large. That's not to say the competition is resting however, and Google in 2019 really needs to keep on its feet if the Pixel line is to meet expectations with its next iteration. Read on for the most up-to-date list of rumors regarding its design and pricing, and a full breakdown of what we’d like to see feature-wise from Google's upcoming pocket rocket. Cut to the chaseWhat is it? The next photo and AI powerhouse from GoogleWhen is it out? Likely October 2019What will it cost? Possibly close to $1,000/£1,000Google Pixel 4 release dateFor years now, Google has opted to release its Pixel lineup in the latter half of the year, after the usual roller coaster of smartphone releases from the first half of the year has died down. More specifically, we expect a Google Pixel 4 launch date sometime in early October based on past form, with it likely that Google will take the opportunity to launch a few other hardware options at the same time, such as the long-rumored Pixel Watch. Following the announcement, it's likely that the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL release date will be in early November, if past years are anything to go by. Google Pixel 4 priceIn terms of the Google Pixel 4 price, the cost of Pixel handsets have been climbing for years now. With the extra features now included and the general emphasis on a premium fit and finish, the Pixel 4 - or at least the XL model - could be the first of the line to break the $1,000/£1,000/AU$1,500 mark. We'll probably also see multiple different storage capacities offered at different prices. More information will arrive closer to the launch, so watch this space. Google Pixel 4 news and rumorsWe know what the Google Pixel 4 will look like (on the back at least), thanks to Google itself posting a tweet with a picture of its upcoming handset. It confirms that the Google Pixel 4 design will feature a large, square camera bump on the rear - which we'd seen in multiple rumors before Google posted its tweet. On closer inspection, it appears the bump houses two cameras - which would be a first for the Pixel line of phones, which have stuck to just a single rear snapper to date - along with a camera flash below them (with a sensor to its right) and another sensor at the top of the square. Another key point we can glean from the official Google Pixel 4 image is the lack of a fingerprint scanner. Every Pixel handset to date has had a rear fingerprint scanner, which points towards the Google Pixel 4 coming with an in-display scanner instead. This theory co-insides nicely with leaked renders claiming to be of the Pixel 4, showing a square camera block which supposedly houses either two or three lenses. There also appears to be a notch or bezel on the front, bottom-firing speakers, and a likely in-screen fingerprint scanner. The Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL may not have fingerprint scanners at all though, if Google opts to go all-in on face, retina or voice recognition instead. On the other hand, the Pixel 4 might arrive toting the punch-hole design used by the Honor View 20 and then brought into the mainstream by the Samsung Galaxy S10 line. At least, that's what an image for a screen protector seemingly designed for the phone shows, along with stereo speakers and virtually no bezel. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/f9fasxCPCDNzFBpqZAiQjT.jpg Image credit: Skinomi We've also similarly seen a leaked image below, supposedly showing the Google Pixel 4 XL with a dual-lens camera cut into the top right corner of the screen - although we now know the rear design it suggests is incorrect, it pours cold water on the rest of the claims made here. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/3iWhSCd45DCkoW5XtrnhmD.jpg Image Credit: SlashLeaks Whichever way Google decides to go with the front design, it will hopefully mean the death of the enormous notch plaguing the Pixel 3 XL, while also ensuring further screen real estate becoming available to the consumer, a win-win. In fact, there's no visible bezel at all on this image, so it's possible that the Pixel 4 XL will be almost bezel-free. We've also seen a Geekbench benchmark possibly for the Google Pixel 4. It lists a top-end Snapdragon 855 chipset, along with 6GB of RAM - up from 4GB in the Pixel 3 range. It also, unsurprisingly, lists the phones as running Android Q. The benchmark includes a single-core score of 3,296 and a multi-core one of 9,235, which are solid but unexceptional results for a top-end phone. Of course, this would be pre-release hardware and software, so results at launch might be better. In more unusual news we've heard that the Google Pixel 4 might have capacitive buttons rather than mechanical, clickable ones - however the image Google has shared appears to go against this, with raised buttons on the side of the handset suggesting mechanical ones. It's possible that this change would be made to allow Active Edge (the ability to launch Google Assistant by squeezing the frame, as found on previous Pixels) to work along the full length of the phone's frame, and it could also help improve the design of the phone. Though notably image leaks still show physical buttons, so take this with a pinch of salt. The same source added that the Pixel 4 will have front-facing speakers and a punch-hole camera. Finally, code added to the open source foundation of Android suggests that the Google Pixel 4 might have improved dual-SIM support, letting you use both a normal SIM and an eSIM at the same time. Throughout the year more leaks will continue to arrive, so keep checking back here for all of the latest developments. What we want to seeNot much is known yet about the Google Pixel 4, but we know what we’d like to see - our suggestions can be found below. 1. Multiple rear camerasSince the beginnings of the Pixel line back in 2016, Google has not only defined what is possible with a single camera sensor, but for smartphone cameras overall. With tricks such as super-res zoom, night shot and more, the Pixel 3 in particular outcmatched the likes of Huawei, Apple and Samsung in 2018, all seemingly without breaking a sweat. The competition isn't resting on its laurels however, with the Huawei P30 Pro in particular turning up the heat. We wouldn't be surprised if a left-field, potentially game-changing software feature is added to the Pixel 4, but to really exceed expectations a second, third or even fourth sensor on the rear would give it an edge. Ultra-wide-angle, telephoto zoom, monochrome, there are lots of options, so we would like Google to experiment with the options available to it - the results could be spectacular. 2. No notchhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/qppMHfyEh3xtv3D6unVzxa.jpg The Google Pixel 3 XL. Image Credit: TechRadar To anyone watching smartphone design evolve, 2018 was the year of the notch. No matter the size of the display, every manufacturer followed the trend set most strongly by the Apple iPhone X with a slew of copycat efforts. Google's Pixel 3 XL is a particularly infamous example of egregious notch design, as it's larger than most. We would like to see the firm completely avoid the notch this year, without resorting to the large bezels of the standard Pixel 3, either by using a pinhole camera in the display or with a sliding mechanism. 3. More RAMDespite generally providing a solid software experience for those using it, the Google Pixel 3 line wasn't without controversy, particularly with regards to RAM management. Many users reported that in the first weeks of use, the camera app in particular used up so much available memory that any other apps then open would be force-closed. In a budget phone with only a smattering of RAM available, this might have been forgivable, but for a flagship it certainly is not. For the Pixel 4 we would like to see at least 6GB of RAM, along with a suitably powerful chipset - hopefully this then will remove any accusations of poor performance. 4. Stereo speakersThe humble stereo speaker, usually front-facing, has faced an odd existence. Although popular with fans on any handset graced with their presence, they tend to be the first victim of space-saving measures. Case in point, 2019 has seen the elimination of the feature from many popular handsets, with it sometimes being replaced by a speaker underneath the display. But for the quality of audio offered, and the improved listening experience, we would like to see stereo speakers remain on the Pixel 4 as they did on the Pixel 3 - standing out from the competition in all the right ways. 5. Longer battery lifePacking in huge batteries has become the done thing for most flagships in 2019. Nearly all sport packs the size of which would have been unheard of only a few years ago. Google though - claiming improved efficiencies with each passing year - has so far not massively improved the size of the battery packs included with its devices. And although early signs are promising that the new Snapdragon 855 is significantly more efficient than its predecessor, the Snapdragon 845, we would like to see Google go the whole hog. We want to see a Pixel which can measure its life in days, rather than hours. Here’s hoping that Google can deliver on this. 6. Stadia-sized ambitionshttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/Bj3DEnqzpDMZWWLoBsU8SB.jpg Image Credit: Google Earlier in 2019, Google 'surprised’ the world with the announcement of its game-streaming platform ‘Stadia’, which utilizes compression technology in an attempt to make a service accessible to all. It has been promised that the service will reach a plethora of devices, mobile, console or otherwise. The question of mobile is a little more complex however, for although expanding the service to all Android devices will likely be a future ambition, for the moment the word is that availability will be restricted solely to Pixel devices. With this in-mind, we’d like to see Google take this concept as far as it can go - but what would this mean? In practice, what we want is improved focus on network performance (to combat potential latency issues) and, more importantly, a dedicated peripheral. This would ideally be in line with what Xiaomi has helped to pioneer with its Black Shark gaming handsets - touch controls are not suited to complex control systems and a dedicated peripheral would help to bridge the gap. 7. More color optionsIn most settings, from the boardroom to the bedroom, black or white options are a solid choice for phones. They add a touch of class and don't stand out in a crowd. The Pixel line certainly caters to this subset of the population, however in the past it has taken slightly wild strides, mostly notably the original 'Really Blue' model (which was indeed very blue). In the vein of this original, we'd like to see the Pixel 4 come in more than one slightly unconventional color, following the example set by the iPhone XR and the Samsung Galaxy S10e. Whether green, blue, yellow or whatever else, the new option needs to stand out from the similarly colorful opposition. 8. A sturdier constructionhttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/vmMQv356Snn5NVgDXyAFU9.jpg The Google Pixel 3. Image Credit: TechRadar The Pixel 3, in no uncertain terms, is a better constructed phone than its predecessor. Boasting tight lines and a glass rear, it has really been a match to the likes of the various iPhone models released in 2018. No amount of truth twisting could lead to accusations of it being damage-proof however - quite the opposite in reality. The stone-like finish applied to the glass on the rear has shown the tendency to scratch easily, far more so than might have been expected. This meant that those shelling out hundreds for their shiny new Google devices found that it didn’t take long before they regretted not slapping a case on instantly. As such, whether via an all-metal build or through something a little different (even a different kind of glass or treatment) we would like to see Google embrace a little utilitarianism into its design, creating something which anyone can use at any time, any day. 2. The Windows 10 May 2019 Update has brought some great new features to Windows 10, but perhaps the best change is one that didn’t get much fanfare – as AMD-powered PCs will now perform better with the update installed. This is because Windows 10 version 1903 – also known as the May 2019 Update – changes how the Windows scheduler tool works with AMD hardware. Previously, the Windows scheduler was causing issues that impacted the performance of AMD Ryzen processors. Best processors 2019: the best CPUs for your PCWindows 10 May 2019 Update problems: how to fix themAMD vs Intel: which chipmaker does processors better? The improvements come from Microsoft and AMD working together to improve Windows 10 performance on AMD hardware – and an acknowledgement from Microsoft that Intel no longer dominates when it comes to PC hardware. Performance gainsAMD also showed off slides that show the PCMark 10 app launches 6% faster with the Windows 10 May 2019 Update, thanks to Ryzen optimizations. There's also an impressive 15% improvement in Rocket League when played at 1080p. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/PuURatcHVyRNKkF3Yf2DiT.jpg AMD shows off performance gains with the May 2019 Update (Image credit: AMD) As another AMD slide shows, these changes can cut latency thanks to how process threads are handled by a single core – while also allowing Windows 10 to use a noticeable clock speed boost to bring improvements to a PC’s performance. The update should also bring faster clock speed ramping, and AMD’s Ryzen CPUs will be more responsive when clock speeds are changed – before the update, speed changes took 30ms, but that’s now been cut to just 1-2ms. If you have an AMD processor, you’ll definitely want to install this update, so check out our guide on how to download and install the Windows 10 May 2019 Update to get started. 3. Volvo and Uber have whipped the wraps off their first production car capable of full self-driving. The Volvo XC90 SUV base vehicle is kitted out with Uber's self-driving tech, meaning it'll be ready to take to the streets by itself in the future as part of Uber's ride-hailing service. Volvo – creator of the three-point seatbelt – has tightened its focus on safety over fun in recent months. Earlier this year, for example, it announced that all its new cars will be capped at 180kph from 2020 onwards. Driverless cars explained: everything you need to knowYour complete guide to electric vehiclesTesla Model Y release date, news and rumorsIt's therefore no surprise that, in addition to the base SUV, its contributions to the autonomous XC90 include a raft of features to protect drivers and passengers. The car is equipped with various backup braking and steering systems, plus a backup battery, all of which should bring the car to a safe stop if any of its primary systems fail during autonomous driving. “We believe autonomous-drive technology will allow us to further improve safety, the foundation of our company,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive of Volvo. “By the middle of the next decade, we expect one-third of all cars we sell to be fully autonomous." Lessons from the pastHowever, backup systems don't guarantee the safety of self-driving cars, as was made clear last year a pre-production XC90 in autonomous mode was involved in a fatal accident with a pedestrian in Arizona. The SUV was equipped with Volvo's collision avoidance system, including emergency braking, but a subsequent report into the accident stated that the auto braking system was disabled while the car was in 'computer mode' to avoid erratic driving. The safety driver was supposed to be alert enough to take control and hit the brakes themselves in such a situation, and it was subsequently decided that Uber wouldn't be charged with a crime. 4. Huawei’s Emotion UI, or EMUI as it's more commonly known, has come a long way over the years. EMUI 9 did away with a lot of the clunkiness that burdened stock Android and improved on it with a UI implementation that feels natural, simple and intuitive. It brought features such as full-screen gesture navigation, GPU Turbo 2.0 and simplified menus which vastly improved user experience for a lot of Huawei users including those who own models as old as the Mate 9. User adoption rates from EMUI 8 to 9 are nothing short of incredible. As of June 3, 2019, over 80 million users have upgraded to EMUI 9 with another 20 million expected to join their ranks by end of June. It is clear that users love the overall smoother experience that brings consistency across the OS from performance to UI design. EMUI 9 was an innovative update that made life easier for several Huawei users. Huawei wishes to continue that innovation streak with their latest update, EMUI 9.1 that’s set to being a host of quality of life improvements and speed enhancements to make this the best version yet. More storage and better performance with EROFS file systemHow fast a system reads and writes files directly impacts performance and your overall experience with the phone. With EMUI 9.1, Huawei is revamping the way files are stored and treated on devices with a brand new file system, EROFS that improves read speeds by 20%. This means faster loading times, smoother response times and better overall system fluency. But that’s not all, EROFS also optimizes files used up by the OS and now takes up 14% less storage than before leaving you more space for your personal files. Security is also beefed up with system files becoming read-only in order to shield from outside interference. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/nCrNHBABTm8BpyogQkLMtP.jpg GPU Turbo 3.0GPU Turbo is Huawei’s software-based hardware acceleration technology that improves graphics performance in Huawei handsets and uses GPU efficiency techniques to deliver top quality performance in mobile games. EMUI 9.1 brings the next version of GPU Turbo that improves on the previous versions. The new iteration will cover 25 of the most popular games on the Google Play Store. GPU Turbo 3.0 also reduces chipset power consumption by 10% leading to noticeable improvements in system performance and resulting in a seamless gaming experience. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/YRzTBxW5EcmatdEHYFfQPK.jpg Minimalism done rightHuawei is committed to providing the best user experience possible and that means making user interactions simple, natural and uncomplicated. To achieve this Huawei’s redesigned EMUI to look more realistic and used nature for inspiration on color schemes and system aesthetics. This can be seen in various improvements brought to EMUI 9.1’s wallpapers, themes and app icons. Another aesthetically pleasant quality of EMUI 9.1 is the subtle minimalism that can be found in every corner of the OS. From decluttered configuration menus to spaced-out app icons, the entire interface has been streamlined to be more easy on the eyes and effortless to use. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/Z4sL7QMrxrJ5rVeoSeqpnP.jpg Smoother, simpler and more intelligentThe overall improved system response brings about a lot of extra benefits such as a more fluid touch experience that’s smoother than ever. One of our favorite features from EMUI 9 is gesture-based navigation that’s enabled by default and feels more responsive and natural to use in EMUI 9.1. Flicking to go home and swiping in myriad of ways to switch between apps or open google Assistant feels more fluid on EMUI 9.1. That combined with accurate touch input makes using EMUI 9.1 an easy and natural experience that never gets in your way. Aside from speed and performance enhancements, Huawei is also bring some unique features that intend to make you Huawei device a more intelligent partner to your daily life. Huawei is also working with car manufacturers around the world to allow EMUI 9.1 Huawei devices to unlock your car with NFC technology. All these features sound and more are set to roll out to several Huawei and Honor devices in the near future. In addition to current flagships, EMUI 9 is set to roll out to the Mate 10 series, P20 series, Mate RS, Nova3, Mate 9 series, P10 series and Nova3i, bringing it to users of older devices. http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/digital-home/~4/FnPODpF9U1I
  5. It may not be the name you instinctively jump to when you think about broadband deals. But, with an offer as good as this, John Lewis is showing it means business in the competitive world of internet packages. When you buy any John Lewis broadband deal for the next few weeks, the retail giant will also throw in a free Google Home Hub with your order. Considering these packages are already pretty affordable, that is a great bit of added value to these broadband deals as John Lewis normally sells the Hub for around £120 on its own. With plans starting at £20 a month, you don't even have to spend much to get this added incentive. Need convincing further? None of John Lewis's packages carry upfront costs, a feature that seems increasingly rare when it comes to today's internet packages. 6.
  7. After the massive success that was Age of Empires: Definitive Edition, it's no surprise that developer Forgotten Empires has chosen to celebrate the series' 20th anniversary by releasing a remastered version of Age of Empires II. What we didn't expect, however, was just how much content we'd get: The Definitive Edition includes the base game and every Age of Empires expansion to date for $19.99 - that's over 20 years of content. That means you get 35 civilizations in total, equating to over 200 hours of content. All that content is on top of the 4K Ultra HD graphics, a new and fully remastered soundtrack, and The Last Khans expansion - which features three new campaigns and four new civilizations. These updated features aim to gameplay smoother for longtime fans and newbies alike. Encouraging new players to get into a series that's over two decades old can be a challenge and the developers are under no illusion otherwise. "It can be intimidating," the game's executive producer, Earnest Yuen, explained to us at E3 2019. "In addition to the original William Wallace Campaign, which is the tutorial, we are adding challenge tutorials that will bring you all the way from 'how to hunt a boar without killing yourself to 'this is how you build a castle as fast as possible." http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/BvzJLuFeTu3TwruUhaYmoj.jpg Image credit: Forgotten Empires But how has Age of Empires managed to keep such a loyal fanbase while enticing new players? "I think history is timeless - everybody has history," Yuen says. "I think it's also because we support our mods. The game is shipped with an editor and you can create your own campaigns and stories. It's also because of the multiplayer - it's super important. We've seen how people play with friends and get more friends to start playing. "History, multiplayer and mods: those are the three pillars we want to keep as we go forward to different versions of Age of Empires." UK and Australian prices have not yet been confirmed, but Forgotten Empires has told us that those who own the HD version of Age of Empires II will get $5 off in the US - making the game only $14.99. Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition will release "Fall 2019" – i.e. sometime in between September and November – on Steam and the Windows 10 Store. 8. Earlier this year, it was revealed that Samsung’s monstrous 'The Wall' MicroLED TV would be made available in 75-inch and 219-inch models, but now the South Korean electronics giant is taking things even further, announcing an upgraded version in The Wall Luxury. Starting at 73 inches for a 2K model, The Wall Luxury will be available in a variety of sizes, ratios and customizable configurations, culminating with a staggering 292-inch behemoth that will offer 8K resolution. Despite being absolutely enormous, Samsung's The Wall Luxury has a depth of only 30mm and sports a totally bezel-free design. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/zn9JB4jPQKujM57Mzr8zKG.jpg Image credit: Samsung First look: The Wall (2018) by SamsungSamsung's 'The Wall' is now available in EuropeFirst the 'Wall', now the 'Window': Samsung patent points to transparent TVSpec-tacularAccording to Samsung, The Wall Luxury will be equipped with an AI picture quality engine, known as Quantum Processor Flex, which will use AI upscaling and machine learning to optimize picture quality on a scene-by-scene basis. On top of this, The Wall Luxury is said to offer Quantum HDR technology for a peak brightness of 2,000 nits, as well as a 120Hz video refresh rate, making it ideal for watching sports or playing video games. Given the customizable nature of The Wall Luxury, it's perhaps no surprise that Samsung has yet to announce pricing for its next generation of MicroLED TVs, though we imagine the larger 8K models will be prohibitively expensive for most of us when they go on sale globally next month. 4K vs 8K: Is it worth upgrading to 'Full' UHD?http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/digital-home/~4/MKhOhh8Wydk
  9. The hype and excitement around AI are ubiquitous and executives in the UAE clearly see the transformational potential it will have on their organizations in the next three to five years. With a significant number of companies still in the planning phase, it is companies that have been able to educate and expose their leadership to AI technology that have moved quickly to the front. These companies are also the ones to develop methodologies and associated dependencies related to AI. Samer Abu-Ltaif, president of Microsoft Middle East and Africa, said that AI is fueling digital transformation across the Middle East and Africa, and, it has the power to amplify human ingenuity as well as extend our capabilities, empowering us to achieve more. AI skills shortageAI is finding early traction around the customer agenda, although CFO’s are not being silent and are pushing AI solutions into the core operations to reduce costs and drive up productivity. According to a survey commissioned by Microsoft and conducted by consulting firm EY across 112 companies and 7 sectors in 5 countries in the MEA region, 80% responded that AI is considered an important topic on the executive management level while 89% expect AI to generate business benefits by optimizing their companies’ operations in the future. Most AI projects (predominantly machine learning, smart robotics and chatbots) are being executed by specialist digital and IT teams as these top-end skills are not freely available. “AI is already improving our lives today and promises to change the world in ways unimaginable to us now. The AI maturity assessment study highlights the strategies adopted at different layers of an organization today and helps us understand their readiness in AI adoption, rate of impact and benefits from its implementations, as well as how AI is being approached on a practical level,” Abu-Ltaif said. The UAE leads the region with AIIn the UAE, AI agenda is driven by direct support from the government with national strategies and programs focused on skills development and capability creation to create the required impetus. “The UAE is already taking strides to succeed in this journey by achieving remarkable milestones – all the way from appointing the world’s first AI minister, to embracing AI across every sector. We have an ambitious goal to make AI accessible and valuable to every individual and organization,” Sayed Hashish, regional general manager at Microsoft Gulf, said. Companies in the UAE ranked machine learning and smart robotics as the most useful, followed by text analysis, virtual agents and natural language processing. According to the report, the greatest amount of investment activity over the past 10 years is seen in Turkey, UAE and South Africa. The number of transactions in Turkey stood at 252 out of the total of 929 transactions in the region, and it is also the leader in terms of the amount invested, being $3.4b, followed by the UAE with $2.15b (160 deals) and South Africa with $1.66b (134 deals). However, Saudi Arabia made a strong come back in 2018, and Jordan, although behind others in the region, is positioning itself to capitalize on opportunities in the immediate future. Interestingly, the two early starters in 2008 were Saudi Arabia and Egypt, but they remained relatively quiet since with the exception of one large deal for Saudi Arabia in 2018. Where is AI growing?Among the sectors, social media attracted the investment most at 60% while social media amounted to only 36% and the balance is shared by cybersecurity and smart mobile beginning to gain some real momentum. “The airline industry has the broadest AI application, especially in the customer space, even though they started very recently. Banks and Telecommunications companies were the early starters, and continue to move forward at a steady pace as data foundations improve and learnings are extracted from early projects,” the report showed. http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/digital-home/~4/pyxFuPBtJwA
  10. Users of Google's Photos and Drive cloud storage services have been able to seamlessly access their photos from either platform for some time now, with the services automatically syncing to each other and even sharing storage space, however the search giant has announced that, from July 10 this year, that will no longer be the case. Google revealed the change in a blog post, saying that it will “simplify the experience across Drive and Photos” when it comes to accessing photos on either platform, as customer feedback has led the company to the conclusion that “the connection between these services is confusing”. Google just teased the Pixel 4Micro-managementFrom July, the photos and videos that all users (including G Suite customers) upload to Drive will no longer be automatically added to your Photos app or desktop client, and similarly, media added to your Photos app won’t appear in the 'Photos' folder in Drive. The same goes for deletions of media in both directions. The current system has apparently caused users to accidentally delete photos and videos across all of their platforms by attempting to remove them from just one, so Google will instead implement more “granular control”. The automatic syncing will be replaced with an “Upload from Drive” feature, which will allow users to manually select images or footage from their Drive folders – even shared media – and import them to Photos, at which point they’ll be unaffected by any changes made to them in Drive. How to back up to Google PhotosHow to use Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive or iCloud as your main storageOther impactsWhile these changes will affect any photos or videos added to either service from July 10, existing media will remain where it is, although its connection to either service will be severed – so modifying or deleting files on one won't affect the other. As for the account-wide storage limit, users are still able to upload unlimited ‘high quality’ files to their Photos service without it impacting their storage, however if those files are also stored in Drive, the latter will count towards the storage cap. As before, ‘original quality’ images will count towards the total storage limit on both platforms. Google hikes G Suite priceshttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/digital-home/~4/AUQME_-NPWA

  12. As organizations across Europe move increasingly into a digital age, new research from Kyocera has revealed that the UK is losing ground in its adaptation of digital documentation. The firm surveyed 1,750 business representatives from self-employed freelancers to professionals at international corporations in seven European markets to compile its new Business Digitalisation in Europe Outlook 2019 report. Kyocera's research found that while 61 percent of UK companies have digitized at least half of their business documents, the rate is lower than four of the seven other countries surveyed including The Netherlands, Italy, Turkey and Spain. The good, the bad and the ugly - digital transformation and legacy IT2019: A year of reckoning for digital transformationIs it time to swap digital transformation for perpetual innovation?Of those surveyed, 12 percent of UK organizations admit to barely having digitized any of their documents which double that of the rate in Spain and Italy. Automating business processesThe study also revealed that the rate of automation of business processes is expected to increase in years to come as nine out of every ten companies claim they would consider automating more processes over the next 12 months. Software product management expert at Kyocera Document Solutions Europe Michael Powell explained that UK companies still have a ways to go in their digital transformation efforts, saying: "We are seeing that UK companies face a variety of challenges such as securing vital information and storing documentation, without realising that easy solutions exist and are on the market in the form of document management solutions, such as Content Services. The UK leads the way in some departments, such as Logistics and Legal, but significantly lags behind in both digitalisation and automation of areas such as Sales and Procurement. Such disparity between departments is reflective of the way in which companies are transitioning, and therefore still have some way to go." While geography does play a role in adoption rates of automation, so too does business size. The rate at which companies automate the majority of their tasks reaches as high as 72 percent among larger companies with over 500 employees compared to just 41 percent among small companies and freelancers. 13. Well it all comes down to this. After a long hard NHL season and a tremendously exciting Stanley Cup finals series, the whole thing boils down to one game of hockey at the TD Garden tonight. The St. Louis Blues have the chance to walk away with the first Stanley Cup in the franchise's history, but they have to beat the favorites Boston Bruins first. The two teams are facing off in a best-of-seven final to see which will take 2019's top honours. And you can get a Blues vs Bruins live stream in the Stanley Cup Finals, regardless of where you are in the world. This year’s match-up is a tale of two very different hockey teams. At the beginning of this year, the Blues were at the bottom of the league and many thought they wouldn’t have a chance at the Stanley Cup this season. However, by adding interim coach Graig Berube, the team entered into a months-long run that put them into the playoffs and now the Stanley Cup Final. The Bruins on the other hand, have been considered a favorite for years and had a helping hand from the Columbus Blue Jackets who knocked the Tampa Bay Lighting out of the playoffs with a four-game sweep. They love to do things the hard way...their last Stanley Cup victory in 2011 was another seven game epic. The Blues haven’t made it to the Stanley Cup Final for 50 seasons while the Bruins expect to be there every year. Will the underdog be able to keep up the momentum and bring home the toughest trophy to win in all of sports or will the favorite triumph once again? Whether you’re a fan of the Blues, the Bruins or just want to witness this piece of NHL history, we’ll show you how to live stream the Stanley Cup Final online from anywhere in the world so you don’t miss any of the Game 7 action. Soccer fan? See how to get a Women's World Cup live streamHow to watch the the 2019 Stanley Cup Final online from outside your countryIf you live in the US, Canada, UK or Australia and want to know how to catch a 2019 NHL Stanley Cup Final live stream, then keep scrolling and we’ll tell you your best viewing options. But if you can't watch because you're not in your home country and so your coverage is geo-blocked then we can suggest a clever alternative (and no, it doesn’t involve finding some dodgy feed on Reddit). Using a VPN - or Virtual Private Network - you can change the IP address to one in a different state or country which does have the stream so that you can watch the NHL Stanley Cup Final from anywhere in the world. The process is very straightforward… http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/x4WvmjGdnEUCFeqhMUrnWo.jpg Watch the Stanley Cup Final Game 7 in the USAll of the games in the Stanley Cup Final will be shown on either NBC or NBCSN. 14. Netflix is no stranger to gaming, and it's pouring more resources into seeing its star Netflix Originals show, Stranger Things, among favorite app store games. "We have a new Stranger Things on mobile platforms coming in 2020," said Chris Lee, Netflix's Director of Interactive Games, during at an E3 2019 panel. There are few details about this new Stranger Things game, but we know it's a role-playing game (RPG) puzzle hybrid that uses location-based technology, something you may be familiar with when playing Pokemon Go. In this game, however, you're fighting the Upside Down and can do that in your own backyard, according to Lee, who also mentioned it has a Saturday Morning '80s cartoon retro style to the graphics. Stranger Things coming from developer Next Games in Helsinki, Finland, and a slide behind Lee at the E3 panel noted it's launching on iOS and Android next year. More Netflix games to comeThis isn't the end of Netflix partnering with game developers to make games. A slide behind Lee read, "Wait, Netflix is making video games? Yes, but not alone." The discussion concluded with him teasing, "Also, later in 2019, we've been busy in the last year making new friends. We have a number of new projects coming out." Lee later echoed, "And, yeah... We've got a few other projects." Hopefully these involve even more than the upcoming Stranger Things Nintendo Switch RPG that will launch alongside the new season on July 4. Also, here's to hoping these projects fair better than the ill-fated partnership with Telltale Games of 2018. E3 2019 is the biggest gaming event of the year. 15. Phishing remains one of the most useful tools in a cybercriminal's arsenal as new research from Valimail has revealed that at least 3.4bn fake emails are sent out worldwide each day. The firm's latest quarterly report, Email Fraud Landscape for Spring 2019, shows that email impersonation accounting for 1.2 percent of all email sent during Q1 2019. While this is lower than the 1.6 percent rate that Valimail noted in Q2 2018, it still represents a huge amount of fake messages. The firm used proprietary data from its analysis of billions of email message authentication requests along with publicly accessible DMARC and SPF records to compile its report. US presidential candidates aren't using basic email securityPhishing scams account for half of all fraud attacksEmail spoofers can use major websites to pose a massive threatCEO and co-founder of Valimail Alexander García-Tobar provided further insight on the findings of the report, saying: "It remains clear that fake emails from hackers, phishers and other cyber criminals constitute the major source of cyberattacks. As more companies recognize and respond to email vulnerabilities, we expect to see organizations continue to deploy authentication technologies to protect against untrusted and fraudulent senders. The fact is that too many attackers are using impersonation to get through existing email defenses. A robust approach to sender identification and authentication is needed to make email more trustworthy, once and for all." Combating phishing with DMARCValimail's report is not all bad news as the number of domains deploying DMARC to address the fake email problem continues to grow with more than 740,000 DMARC-enabled domains worldwide today. The adoption of standards-based email authentication is accelerating in many industries though in some categories, such as the Fortune 500, US tech giants and the US federal government, DMARC usage is well over 50 percent. While adoption may be up, Valimail found that enforcement still lags behind. Of the domains deploying DMARC, only around 20 percent have actually configured it to a policy of quarantine or reject which helps protect the domain from impersonation. The firm also found that fewer than 10 percent of all companies have DMARC records with enforcement policies and only the US government and US tech giants have higher rates of protection at 72 percent and 24 percent of domains respectively. Some of these hybrids are used as slaves in the mining and collection of a valuable and dangerous mineral called Diwalite. You, the player, will be a space pirate and you'll be able to choose whether you are a human or a hybrid. You'll also be able to rescue these slave hybrids and recruit them to your crew. Overall, though, the game will give you plenty of freedom to craft your own story. You can watch the stream for yourself below: Won't be at E3 2019 Ubisoft has confirmed that Beyond Good and Evil 2 will not be making an appearance at E3 2019. However, there will be a special Beyond Good and Evil 2 stream on June 5 which promises to update fans on the game's progression. Joseph Gordon-Levitt The reveal at E3 2018 also clued us into a collaboration with Joseph Gordon-Levitt's Hit Record company to produce user-generated content that will make it into the final game. People around the world will be able to contribute all sorts of content with hopes of it making it into the final product. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/7vrqYpgTok6Dnk9w7WVqYg.jpg Image credit: Ubisoft E3 2018 E3 2018 brought us some more news on Beyond Good and Evil 2 and we attended a behind closed doors demo of the game. We now know that the game will be a prequel to the original, with a younger Jade taking up the role of antagonist. Players will be able to play co-operatively in the open game world, and they don't even have to remain near each other at all. You'll be able to create your very own space pirate and explore the universe in your very own space ship. From what we've seen of the game so far the game world is astonishingly large and utterly seamless and you can move from city streets, to sky, to space to outer space without any loading screens at all. From the off you'll have a melee weapon, a gun, a shield and a jetpack. Weapons can be modified with interesting augments. A key item in the game will be a cool spyglass which players can use to assess situations before going into them. Hovering over an enemy will tell you more about them, what augments they're using and their abilities. It certainly makes planning an attack a lot more smooth. You can also use it to scan buildings and assess what they do and whether there might be any use in setting your eyes on them for a robbery. The developer livestream A for Beyond Good and Evil 2 showcased some gameplay footage which showed how melee staff combat and ship maneuvering would work. Outside of this, it also confirmed that players would be using their very own custom characters and the story will have new information on Beyond Good and Evil's Jade, DomZ and the origin of the human-animal hybrids. Online play Michel Ancel has said the game will be playable online, which falls in line with Ubisoft's shift towards securing long-term player engagement from its games. At the moment it's still not clear how online play will actually work – it could be a separate mode with individual matches or it could work more like Far Cry 5 which allows players to go through the entirety of the main game with a friend. We hope it's the latter. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/NY5a5Sh9N4btt9V56sMJnJ.jpg Image credit: Ubisoft Own more than one ship Players will be able to own multiple ships, increasing their scale and crew size as they go. Once a player has a larger ship they'll even be able to store their smaller one-man dogfighting vessels inside it. Furthermore, the environments will be somewhat destructible, allowing parts of buildings to be demolished but not entire large structures, apparently. Real-time meteor showers will be able to impact entire portions of planets which could potentially trigger missions and story events. Extensive exploration Furthermore, exploration will apparently be a big theme, and you will be able to fly from a planet into space seamlessly without loading times—much like in No Man's Sky. There will also be spaceships of varying sizes, including vast ones that can hold smaller ones within. Ancel also talks a bit about the world in which these characters exist, with the social structure seemingly keeping these hybrid creatures down, along with the vile threat of slavery. He suggests that the crew you see in the Gada ship, comprised of varying hybrids and humans of different origins, showcases the diverse message that the game hopes to convey despite the ugliness in the world. It's "exactly the heart of Beyond Good and Evil 2," he explains. A Jade connection As for the green-eyed captain at the end, Ancel admits that there is some connection to Jade from the first game, but refuses to spoil the game with any specifics. Likewise, there's an earlier reference to her Uncle Pey'j that Ancel also acknowledges, and he says the teases hint at "how deep the world can be." Similarly, the trailer is apparently loaded with Easter egg references. Apparently Jade will not directly feature in the game as it's set a generation before her birth. Unfortunately, there's no word on a release target or even the platforms that we'll be playing on, and given that Beyond Good and Evil 2 was only confirmed to be in pre-production as of last autumn, it may still be a long way away. We might be lucky to see it in 2018, but don't be surprised at all if the game doesn't ship until 2019 or 2020. A brand new game engine Ubisoft has revealed the Beyond Good and Evil 2 is being worked on using a brand new game engine called Voyager. To capture Michel Ancel's vision for the game and create a world as large as this game's one will be, a brand new game engine was completely necessary and the tech for it has been in development for the past 3 years. Check out a video detailing the new engine below: Franchise historyAs of now, only one game has been released in this series: the original Beyond Good and Evil, which hit PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, and PC back in 2003. Photojournalist Jade's quest to investigate and uncover an alien conspiracy leads to a grand and diverse adventure spanning stealth navigation, melee combat, puzzle solving, photography, and even racing. Slick art direction, entertaining action, and compelling characters and story threads made Beyond Good and Evil a fan favorite, even if the game wasn't a sales success. Luckily, it became a true cult classic over time, and Ubisoft revived the original game with an HD edition for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2011. It's also backwards compatible with the Xbox One, so at least you can play it on one of the current consoles. Beyond Good and Evil 2 was first announced all the way back in 2008 with a very odd teaser trailer, which sets the tone for a version of the game we may never experience. It shows Jade and Pey'j on the side of the road with a broken hover car, as Pey'j snorts and digests passing flies. Quite a change from what we eventually saw at E3 2017! In 2009, meanwhile, a leaked video—which looks like target gameplay footage—shows an acrobatic Jade winding her way through a busy city as she climbs, runs, takes out guards, and eventually grabs hold of a helicopter and escapes. However, later that summer, Ubisoft confirmed that the game would not yet begin full production. In the years since, we've seen various teases and confirmations of its continued development, with Ubisoft acknowledging work on it in 2014 and 2016. And then, late in 2016, Ancel affirmed that they were full steam ahead in pre-production, which Ubisoft also confirmed. According to Ancel, the team has been working on the game intently since Rayman Legends shipped in 2013, and that earlier work on the game had been halted due to technical limitations back then. What we'd like to seeWell, we'd like to see the actual game most of all. The trailer is rich and inviting, and clearly shows a lot of work and attention being paid to Beyond Good and Evil 2's game world. It can send our imaginations wandering into so many different directions, which is the problem: how will this vision coalesce into a cohesive game? We just don't know. Ancel's trailer breakdown video offers some hints, with the promise of a huge, vertical world, cooperative online play of some sort, and the ability to jet off into space without worrying about loading screens or other frustrating breaks in the action. It sounds massively ambitious, but that's very much in line with Ubisoft's modern approach: the company does vast open worlds now, and nearly all of its AAA properties follow some version of that mold. Our hope is that Beyond Good and Evil's spirit doesn't get lost in the vastness of that open concept, and that the game retains its individuality despite opening up and bringing in some level of multiplayer action. Based on the trailer, we are definitely encouraged about the tone and distinctiveness of the game, although besides the whole matter of how the actual game looks and plays, there are still questions about when we'll get to play it and on which devices. Hopefully we don't have to wait too long to get some concrete answers. On the other hand, it has been 14 years since the first game released, and nine years since this sequel was revealed, so it's clear that Ubisoft is happy to take its time to get this right. Let's hope the long wait truly pays off. Will there be a beta? There will! Ubisoft confirmed during E3 2018 that Beyond Good and Evil 2 will have a beta and it's possible to sign up for it now. However, do be aware that it's not expected that the beta will be live and playable until the end of next year. It's likely that more will be revealed during E3 2019. 17. Amazon Prime Day 2019 is fast approaching - but when is it going to be? Well, some sleuthing from our sister site Real Homes may have uncovered the date, with a PR for vacuum firm Tineco seemingly 'confirming' it will be in the third week of July. While the source originally stated that its 10 Hero and 10 Master vacuum cleaners would be part of the Prime Day main deals on July 16 and 17, it has since retracted that statement and said that this was the date from 2018, sent out in error. The brand has contacted TechRadar again and stated that the dates were apparently sent based on 'speculation from last year' despite initially claiming and reiterating to Real Homes that these were the dates for Amazon's Prime sales. So, with the retraction now confirmed, the mystery over when the date will be still spins on - but we're still looking at July 15 as the likely launch day for the sales, if we were asked to guess. When is Amazon Prime Day 2019?We're expecting Prime Day to run from either July 8-9, or the following week on 15-16 - so this fits in with that expectation nicely. However, with Amazon refusing to confirm the leak to Real Homes and the source retracting the official date, we may have to wait a little longer to be sure when the next ream of online deals will be coming. If you're looking for a great vacuum deal and simply can't wait for the middle of July, the Dyson Cyclone V10 Absolute is a top performer at a now-reduced price. http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/digital-home/~4/v622Ql3JNcw
  18. As the number of online collaboration tools used by businesses has skyrocketed in recent years, so too has the amount of work about work employees have to deal with which is why Dropbox has redesigned its platform to help users organize their content, connect tools and bring all the members of an organization together online. The new Dropbox makes it easier to access files stored locally as well as those in the cloud by bringing them together in one place. Now users can create, access and share cloud content from Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides and Microsoft Office files right within Dropbox. Searching for files across cloud services will also be easier as the company now allows you to see traditional files, cloud content, shortcuts and files you've chosen not to download right from one search box. Dropbox launches cold storageEliminating work about work with team toolsDropbox now lets you create Google Docs, Sheets and moreDropbox is also helping teams stay in sync by enabling users to pin content to the top of a workspace as well as @mention people and assign them tasks so that everyone knows what they need to do. The new Dropbox also lets you see file activity and keep tabs on team members with a new team activity feed. Offering feedback can now be done by creating comments right alongside your content across desktop, web and mobile. New integrationsThe company is also building on its existing integrations with Salesforce, Adobe and Autodesk by adding three new integrations which will work seamlessly with Dropbox to help bring your content into context. The first of which is with Slack and now Dropbox users will be able to start Slack conversations and share content to Slack channels directly from Dropbox. Organizations that use Zoom for video conferencing can now connect Zoom and their calendar to Dropbox so that they can bring their work into video conferences. From Dropbox, users will be able to add and join Zoom Meetings and during a meeting, they'll be able to share files from the cloud storage platform. The company also announced that users will soon be able to manage projects with Atlassian though this integration is not available yet. Those interested in trying out the new Dropbox for themselves can opt in to the new desktop app through the company's early access program. 19. Google isn't just hinting at the Google Pixel 4 ahead of its expected October launch, it's actually showing what the phone will look like in a surprising new reveal. We're seeing it four months earlier than the anticipated release date and it gives us a glimpse of the back of the Android phone, complete with a larger square-shaped camera module. "Well, since there seems to be some interest, here you go! Wait 'til you see what it can do," teases Google in its Twitter post under the handle @madebygoogle. Google's messaging here alludes to the fact that there have been several leaks of its phone already. It's clearly getting out ahead of the rumor mill with its own controlled tease. What's significant about the Pixel 4 'leak'Google leaking its own phone is news, but there's more to this story. We're seeing a change in camera design with at least two camera lenses and maybe even a third sensor. Its square shape is similar to another rumored smartphone we've seen leaked: the iPhone 11. It appears as in Google is taking a similar approach on the outside. The Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL have top-of-the-line cameras, but until today, we've seen the company steer away from implementing multiple lenses on back. Its single-lens solution has been buttressed by superb post-processing software and does a decent job of compensating for the lack of telephoto and depth-sensing lens. Google going the extra step of improving its camera hardware could easily lead to it reclaiming the best camera phone title from the Huawei P30 Pro. Right now, we think the Pixel 3 and Huawei P30 Pro pro cameras are very close in quality – Huawei's is just a tad more versatile with a great telephoto lens and an ultra-wide camera. We'll have to wait and see if Google's camera comes out on top with the Pixel 4 – or wait until Google teases its forthcoming phone in another 'leak' follow-up. We're here all week: E3 2019http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/digital-home/~4/DI6MiiYo87g
  20. Modern Linux distros are designed to appeal to a large number of users who run modern hardware. As a result, they have become too bloated for older machines, even if you manually delete files. Without a healthy dollop of system memory and an extra core or two, these distros may not deliver the best performance. Thankfully, there are many lightweight distros, trimmed and tweaked by expert hands, which can be used to breathe new life into older hardware. But there's one caveat to bear in mind when working with lightweight distros – they usually manage to support ancient kit by cutting away just about everything you take for granted, such as wizards and scripts which make everyday tasks easier. That said, these lightweight distros are fully capable of reviving older hardware and can even function as a replacement of your current operating system, if you're willing to adjust to their way of working and install extra programs as necessary. 10 of the best Linux distros for privacy fiends and security buffs5 of the most popular Linux gaming distros10 best Linux distros: which one is right for you? What's the best Linux distro for beginners? How to choose the best Linux distro for laptopshttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/EsCLug2yQWd8vm6TtohwCn.jpg Image credit: Absolute Linux Absolute Linux is a lightweight distro designed for desktop use, and as such comes preinstalled with the Firefox browser and LibreOffice suite. It's based on Slackware 14.2 but unlike its parent OS, aims to make configuration and maintenance as simple as possible. New versions of Absolute Linux are released roughly once a year. The most recent version (15.0) was made available for download in February 2018. It’s available as a 2GB ISO for 64-bit computers. The OS is still in the beta testing stage so may perform a little unpredictably, as ever with beta software. Whichever version you choose, there's a massive selection of lightweight applications available. The installer is text-based so there's no Live mode, but nevertheless it's incredibly simple to follow. The way Absolute is structured also means that you can add and remove packages from the install media to create a distro which truly suits you, though you'll need some time and experience with Linux if you really want to make the most of this feature. Once installed, Absolute Linux is incredibly nimble. This is ensured through the lightweight IceWM window manager, along with popular apps such as LibreOffice, making this OS perfect for older machines. There's also plenty of documentation accessible from within the desktop itself to assist new users. You can download Absolute Linux herehttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/684e36528eca45e1971880b3630342db.jpg http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/dyRCsQJiQVnz5SdTRkSXCn.jpg Image credit: TinyCore The Core Project offers up the tiniest of Linux distros, shipping three variants on which you can build your own environments. The lightest edition is Core, weighing in at just 11MB, which comes without a graphical desktop – but you can always add one after installation. If that's too intimidating, try TinyCore (currently v9.0). The OS is only 16MB in size and offers a choice of FLTK or FLWM graphical desktop environments. You can also choose to install CorePlus, which measures a relatively hefty 106MB. This spin offers a choice of lightweight window managers such as IceWM and FluxBox. CorePlus also includes support for Wi-Fi and non-US keyboards. TinyCore saves on size by requiring a wired network connection during initial setup. The recommended amount of RAM is just 128MB. There are 32-bit and 64-bit versions as well as PiCore, which is a build for ARM devices like the Raspberry Pi. This minimalist distro doesn't feature many apps. After installation there's little beyond the Terminal, a basic text editor and a network connection manager. The Control Panel provides quick access to the different configurable parts of the distro such as display, mouse, network, etc. Use the graphical package manager 'Apps' to install additional software such as multimedia codecs. You can download TinyCore herehttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/684e36528eca45e1971880b3630342db.jpg http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/5jzFKhhDXhH4DiWk947hRn.jpg Image credit: Lubuntu The 'L' in Lubuntu stands for lightweight, and it unashamedly appeals to those Ubuntu users who are looking for an OS which requires fewer resources than most modern distros, but doesn't force you to compromise on your favourite apps. Lubuntu is primarily designed for older machines. The default desktop is based on LXQt, which is far less resource hungry than mainstream Ubuntu's Gnome 3 desktop. It comes with a plethora of office, internet, multimedia and graphics apps, along with a wide assortment of useful tools and utilities. As a lightweight distro, Lubuntu focuses on being fast and energy efficient. It features alternative and less resource intensive apps where possible. The most recent releases have also reverted back to using LibreOffice rather than Abiword for word processing. This doesn't mean that Lubuntu is lacking, though: it's based on Linux Kernel 5.00 and Ubuntu 18.04, so it's a proper modern Linux distro – it's just shed all unnecessary weight, in the manner of a rally car having all but one of its seats removed. The most recent release of Lubuntu (19.04 – Disco Dingo) has now lowered the minimum required RAM to run the OS to 500MB. However, to ensure smooth running, try to use a machine with at least 1GB of RAM. It’s available in 32-bit and 64-bit incarnations. The unique selling point of Lubuntu is its compatibility with Ubuntu repositories, which gives users access to thousands of additional packages that can be easily installed using the Lubuntu Software Center. You can download Lubuntu herehttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/684e36528eca45e1971880b3630342db.jpg http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/hmupV4ktVzEWs8Grfr8KYW.jpg Image credit: LXLE LXLE is a lightweight version of Linux based on the annual Ubuntu LTS (long term support) release. Like Lubuntu, LXLE uses the barebones LXDE desktop environment, but as LTS releases are supported for five years, it emphasises stability and long-term hardware support. The most recent version at the time of writing (16.04.4) is a remaster of the current of version of Ubuntu LTS. Aimed primarily at reviving older machines, the distro is designed to serve as a ready to use desktop out of the box, specifically tailored to appeal to existing Windows users. The developers spend a considerable amount of time making all the necessary mods and tweaks to improve performance, but they don't skimp on niceties. Aesthetics are a key area of focus as evidenced by the hundred wallpapers which are included, along with clones of Windows functions like Aero Snap and Expose. The distro boasts full featured apps across categories such as internet, sound and video, graphics, office, games, and more. It also includes plenty of useful accessories such as a Terminal-based Weather app and Penguin Pills, which is a graphical frontend for several virus scanners. Like Lubuntu, LXLE is available as a Live image for 32-bit and 64-bit machines. The hardware requirements are 512MB of system RAM at a minimum, with 1GB recommended. You can download LXLE herehttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/684e36528eca45e1971880b3630342db.jpg http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/qfzmMWhxsmnmj6CwZVxNZf.jpg Image credit: Damn Small Linux Damn Small Linux (DSL) lives up to its name in that the install image is barely 50MB. It's designed specifically for x86 PCs and will run on an ancient 486 CPU with 16MB of RAM. This means it can run fully inside your system memory which can result in phenomenally fast speeds. DSL is usually run from a USB or CD, or you can do a Debian-style installation to a hard drive if you prefer. Despite the extremely minimal desktop, you may be surprised at the vast array of tools that come preinstalled. You can surf the web with a choice of three browsers – Dillo, Firefox or the text-based browser Netrik. You can also examine office documents using the Ted word processor and check your email with the minimal Slypheed client. Or indeed sort through your data with the ultra-tiny emelFM file manager. The latest stable version of DSL (4.4.10) was released in 2008. However, you can update and add new applications using the MyDSL Extension Tool. The distro is incredibly fast as it's small enough to run entirely from system RAM. The unique selling point of Porteus is that it exists in a compressed state (less than 300MB for the Cinammon and MATE editions) and creates the file system on-the-fly. Besides the preinstalled apps, all additional software for the distro comes in the form of modules, making the OS very small and compact. Porteus is available for 32-bit and 64-bit machines. The distro provides users with the choice of KDE, MATE, Cinnamon, Xfce and LXDE desktop environments when downloading the ISO image. Unfortunately the option to build your own custom ISO has been removed since we previously looked at Porteus, but the pre-built images offer a decent selection of software and drivers, as well as an excellent selection of tutorials to help you get started. You can download Porteus herehttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/684e36528eca45e1971880b3630342db.jpg http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/HKGRBgMt62t9UWVJ3SGkef.jpg Image credit: Vector Linux This distro’s credo is 'keep it simple, keep it small', and it manages this to great effect. It allows users to mould the distro to serve just about any possible purpose – Vector Linux can be a lightning-fast desktop for home users, and can just as easily be used for running servers, or as the gateway for your office computer. After a lengthy period, Vector Linux 7.1 was finally officially released in July 2015, and now comes in two flavours: Light and Standard. The difference is in the desktop environment used. Vector Linux Light uses the ultra-efficient IceWM for the desktop environment while the Standard version is powered by Xfce. This Slackware-based distro tends to favour GTK+ apps such as Pidgin Messenger, but you can use the TXZ package manager to fetch and install additional software. You can download Vector Linux herehttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/684e36528eca45e1971880b3630342db.jpg http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/7R8MLD5zUKp294kgDjMwzY.jpg Image credit: Puppy Linux Puppy Linux is one of the oldest lightweight distros out there. The project has been turning out slim, sleek and fast distros for 15 years now, and offers different versions depending on the underlying environment. Puppy Linux 8.0 (Bionic Pup) is based on Ubuntu Bionic Beaver (18.04). Puppy Linux developer, Barry Kauler, also manages a sister project named Quirky, a version of Puppy Linux built using the custom tool Woof-CE. The distro is full of apps, belying its small size – some are quite unconventional, such as Homebank which helps you manage your finances, or Gwhere which is for cataloguing disks. There are also graphical tools to manage Samba shares and set up a firewall, for example. The sheer variety of applications is impressive. The Bionic Pup edition of Puppy Linux is compatible with Ubuntu's repositories, giving users access to the parent distro's vast software collection. The handy QuickPet utility can be used to install some of the most popular apps. You can download Puppy Linux herehttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/684e36528eca45e1971880b3630342db.jpg http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/TH4fJCzHiMvbJFM6amgyK6.jpg Image credit: Linux Lite Linux Lite is based on Ubuntu (currently Long Term Support version 18.04). It is specifically developed to ease Windows users – particularly those with old machines running Windows XP – into the world of Linux. It features familiar tools like Firefox (with built-in support for Netflix), plus VLC Media Player and LibreOffice are preinstalled. The OS also includes the zRAM memory compression tool which makes it run faster on older machines. There's also a special ‘Lite Upgrade’ utility. Despite its name, this distribution isn't the least resource hungry out there, as it requires both a 1.5GHz processor and at least 1GB of RAM to run smoothly. That said, this shouldn't be too much to ask of any computer made in the last decade. Try it on modern hardware and you'll be amazed at just how quickly it runs. Linux Lite can boot from a Live medium such as a USB stick or CD, or install to your hard drive. It also supports multi-booting so you can keep your existing OS if you wish. The distro is available for both 32-bit and 64-bit systems. While it was discontinued in 2013, the community fondly remembered its lightning speed and responded with two Crunchbang-based distros to continue its legacy. However, one of those successors, Crunchbang++, has now been discontinued. BunsenLabs is still active, though, and its current release (Helium) is based on the latest stable version of Debian featuring a gorgeously configured Openbox window manager and its own repository of core packages. There's also a point release option, which is regularly updated if you want to stay on the bleeding-edge. It requires at least 256MB of RAM to run (with 1GB or more recommended). 21. Deciding on the type of website you’re making right from the outset can save you plenty of time in the long run. Because if you spend time and effort on making a certain type of site, only to be forced to try and turn it into something entirely different, it can be quite a painful – not to mention costly – experience. This scenario is especially true of e-commerce sites, as they require special facilities and coding that a different kind of website certainly won’t need. There is little point going to the expense of creating a site with all the functionality to sell products if you’ve no intention of offering online sales. And equally, adding this functionality into a site that was previously meant to be a blog or portfolio solution is going to be a frustrating experience. So what sort of website do you need? Let’s explore some of the main types of sites, and whether they fit the bill for you. We’ve chosen the best web hosting services right hereThese are the best free web hosting companies aroundAnd those are currently the best website builders We’ve chosen the best website hosting services right here1. Main business siteEvery major company has a main site, the one that you’re invariably directed to if you put the firm’s name into a search engine, because it’s returned at the top of the search results. At this location, you should find all the information about products and services that are offered by the business, and be able to establish a communication channel for sales, support or marketing. If the company concerned has many products or supports multiple markets, the main site often has a very limited selection of pages at the top level, with a series of subdomains representing various functions layered below that, all of which are separate websites you can visit. By choosing this model, the site structure ends up less complex and allows for the isolation of e-commerce technology on the sections associated with financial transactions. For companies that aren’t big blue chip or multinational affairs, the main business site can be something entirely different – like a blog. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/2nQvStaUB6uRKcMoH3vqRN.jpg 2. The blogWhen blogs first appeared they were generally a personal site with a stream of thoughts on a subject or the life of the blogger. Like most things on the internet they’ve evolved, and they now combine the regular blogging function with branded sponsorship, product reviews, site-related products (T-shirts, mugs, and so forth) and services. A blog that does these things and utilizes targeted advertising can be a source of income for a popular blogger. And, with the regular income, it is much easier to justify the time spent in maintaining the site and creating new content. Blogs can be code-built, made with website builders, or many creators choose to use the most popular blogging tool: WordPress. Another useful monetization method is affiliation. 3. Product and services affiliationLet’s imagine that you have a passion for lawnmowers, and you have a blog where you discuss the technology involved in mowing lawns and the latest products released in this sector. If you can create a list of all the lawnmowers made by a given brand, and then link to another site where they are sold, a referral fee can be earned for directing your visitors to those locations. Building one of these sites isn’t an overnight exercise, though, as accumulating enough content to attract visitors, and then gaining the trust of those readers, all takes time. Those who pick the right products or services can be very successful, but getting there can easily take two or three years of work. The consensus is that direct selling is an easier path. 4. Selling siteMost e-commerce sites started as a normal business doing work through either phone sales or with a retail bricks-and-mortar location. But now some start out from a website or by using eBay, or one of the other major selling portals. These sites don’t generally need a blog or other content as they’re updated with new product lines and special offers as a means to generate traffic. What these sites need most is a way for the product catalog to be easily searched and navigated. And, when the customer has found what they want, a means to process the order securely, and then confirm that order back to the customer. While this might sound easy, there are numerous caveats to creating e-commerce sites that make them challenging to create and maintain. Often the best way to create one is to buy an existing e-commerce model and then customize it with bespoke branding. That’s because building such a site from scratch is an expensive exercise that requires specialist knowledge. 5. Support systemsNot every site can be a big standalone venture, and often isolating a business offshoot with a unique web location has many advantages. Here are a few of the better reasons for having a subdomain and associated website: Brand identity Everyone knows Kellogg’s, so well in fact that it has become the accepted term for Corn Flakes, even if it is technically a brand. Fewer people know that the company that makes this breakfast cereal is called The Kellogg Company, and that it also makes a wide range of other products including crackers and cookies, plus it owns other well-known brands like Cheez-it. Often those brands are more important to the organization than the holding company’s identity, and therefore a separate website is needed where promotional material can exist away from the corporate content. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/96LRWMAdXzbR57gGfJ5Kik.jpg A good example is Nestlé, which has an official website at www.nestle.com. But it also has a brand site for KitKat in the UK that can be found here. The other advantage of branding sites is that they’re very easy to disappear should the brand or product fail, rather than attempting to remove all the references from the main site. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/sjdWHRifaUHAZbhp3ut7E3.jpg Pure support Product and service contract support is big business. And having a dedicated website that can manage that part of the operation can convince customers that they’re getting something useful for their money. Usually, access to the internal resources on the support site is via customer login, and support requests are subsequently managed through a ticketing system that records the progression of the request. By way of providing some self-help options, many support sites have an integrated forum, an extensive FAQ, and a complete collection of support documentation. Having live support responders available for a chat is also common. Lead generation You have a new product or service, so naturally you want to direct customer interest in that to a specific new team who will follow those leads. Achieving this is remarkably simple, and is usually done with just a single-page site that has the company branding and a contact form for those who want to register their interest. What could be simpler? Other website typesThere are many site types that we’ve not covered in detail that are mostly variations on what we’ve mentioned or amalgamations of traditional types. Artists, photographers, sculptors and artisans of all types often have sites that are effectively digital galleries, allowing potential customers to see the range and quality of work on offer. Homage sites exist for musicians and actors, and there are also the likes of streaming media portals, historical reference collections and translation services. The variety of site content is almost endless, although they all build on the fundamental concepts of easily navigating through that content and directing the visitor so they can find the knowledge, service or product that they’re interested in. The skills needed to build any type of website are essentially the same, except e-commerce sites, where financial transactions require specialist knowledge to handle safely. 22. Everyone knows a person who has a car but refuses to ever look at the engine oil or even the water levels. Deep down they know at some point their vehicle will go wrong, probably from something minor that was left to fester, but they prefer to live in perpetual automotive ignorance. Taking the same approach with a website is equally a very bad plan. But with the new and rapidly changing topology of the web landscape, a site could run into difficulties more rapidly than you might ever imagine. All sites should have a regular audit, at least once a year, to identify any potential weaknesses, and also to look for improvements even in those areas which seem to be fine. We’ve chosen the best web hosting services right hereThese are the best free web hosting companies aroundAnd those are currently the best website builders AnalysisThere are plenty of websites and applications that offer to analyze a web location and then deliver a list of action points with regards to how the site might be improved. What these tools generally do is look at the site, its structure and contents, then further examine search engine page rankings from the most popular engines. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/tgdfUMC6JYLN24M7E2WKJR.jpg By comparing the two, and possibly referring to other websites ranked higher in the same searches as the analyzed site, it is possible to produce a checklist of where the site is good and equally where it needs to be improved. Google, Bing and Yahoo all have their own methods for ranking: some of the changes suggested will help on all search platforms, and some will be specific to just one search service. But remember, these aren’t the only things that an audit will identify. It should also find the answers to these questions: Is the site mobile friendly? Are there any broken links on the site?Is the Meta information valid? How quickly do pages load? Are the graphics too large? How many backlinks exist?Do you have a schema? Is the URL structure too complicated? There are many other details that should also be checked, but these represent the critical ones that must be right for a website to succeed. A full audit should include technical analysis of the code and performance of the site with plenty of concurrent users. Furthermore, it should deliver a full internal and external link assessment, check into social media visibility, and critically, assess how the site performs on search engines. And, once all that information has been collated, a ‘hit list’ of changes and enhancements can be created to address any issues. The feedback loopYou did the analysis, followed the advice, but how do you know that you’ve made things better and not worse? What you need to do is track your page rankings, and hopefully see that after all these adjustments, the page is better ranked across a range of search engines. It’s then a matter of repeating this exercise to hone the site into an optimal state for the current business sector that the website is operating in. This is especially important if you launch a new feature to the site, a new product range, or initiate a fresh marketing exercise – as the analysis might be one of the first indications of how this has impacted site traffic, and how it might need tweaking to make best use of the resulting higher profile. It is also important to document all changes so that anyone new working on the site (or site content) has this information to hand. By being able to refer to this, they shouldn’t repeat past mistakes, instead building on the success already achieved. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/iUh6dfCFEVAYDmBzKVLVEW.jpg SEO moving targetThe problem with SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is that it is an inherently endless, but very necessary, task. You make some changes and elevate your place in the search results, and then one of your competitors makes similar efforts, pushing you back down again. There are also many invisible factors that can come into play, like a highly popular piece of content you added, which can skew results or get the page to appear on more searches. Furthermore, there are external influences that can’t be predicted, such as a breaking news story that relates to your sector, or an important mention on a high traffic site. In the end, you must simply make the best of what web resources you have, using a decent SEO service provider to do a regular analysis and then add the required keywords and phrases to attract more traffic. Don’t expect overnight results – instead aim to keep the numbers moving in the right direction, even if the improvement is modest. These facilities don’t cost much to use, and they can make a big difference for a site trying to break into higher page rankings. Those who are serious about page rankings and want to increase the number of visitors to a site need to invest in SEO – and indeed possibly contract an SEO service to manage all this, at least in the early important phases of your drive to get more online attention. 23. We’re all familiar with the term ‘one hit wonder’, and many artists or groups have had huge success with a single song, then subsequently nosedived into commercial oblivion with their following tracks. The lifecycle of a website can be disturbingly similar, at least to a point. There’s a kind of gravitational force which acts on all websites, pulling them down the search engine rankings as they’re replaced with newer, fresher, more successfully promoted sites. If you want to defy this natural force, you’ll need a promotional plan, many clever tricks, and a concerted effort from your web development team. With that in mind, here’s a list of 20 ways in which you can promote your website, and keep it as visible as possible. We’ve chosen the best web hosting services right hereThese are the best free web hosting companies aroundAnd those are currently the best website builders http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/rLSw8vb998yZhwA9aHv8hm.jpg 1. Be SEO smartMost of the time, your website will be found via a search engine, and the vast majority of folks out there are using Google for search duties. And where your site is placed in terms of the rankings in any given search is heavily influenced by how Google matches the words and phrases that people are using to search. Consider altering the site’s content to include popular phrases that people are searching for, and find the magic words that you need using the Google AdWord keyword planner. This process – although there’s a lot more to it – is known as SEO, which stands for Search Engine Optimization. 2. Get reciprocalThe more links that external websites have to your site, and the more links you make to them, will be seen by search engines as a good reason to elevate your importance as a web location. Therefore if you have commercial relationships, you can strengthen those by exchanging links and building a flow of traffic between your mutual sites. This is especially useful if you are part of a bigger conglomerate, where the group site can link to all the subsidiaries without the need for permissions. 3. Facebook adsIf you want to sell door-to-door, then you need to turn up when people are at home, and the web equivalent of this is catching them on social media. Despite some recent flattening of growth, many millions of people still use Facebook, and this platform has the advantage that you can target users of a specific age or gender, those with certain interests, or those who follow particular brands or celebrities. 4. Connect with influencersPerhaps you can’t get an A-list star to blog about your products or services, but maybe you could find a blogger who has a dedicated following that they can influence. Compared with celebrity endorsements, the costs will be minimal, and some might even cover a product for a free sample if asked. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/PMv3LF8JxpByc65n72pw64.jpg 5. Go beyond GoogleGoogle may be the search giant of the world, but not everyone uses it. For example, in China, more surfers use Baidu. Submitting to all those other search engines aside from Google and Bing is a worthwhile exercise, especially if you do business in locations outside of the US and Europe. Instead of submitting to each engine in turn, use a tool like Submit Express to hit a large number in a single operation. 6. Use YouTubeThe right video on YouTube can rapidly attract tens of thousands of views, and can subsequently generate links in Facebook and Twitter. Even if it’s just a recording of a seminar speech or something made to promote a new product line, it’s all worth placing on YouTube to create interest and attract visitors to your website. 7. Be adaptableTracking and analyzing information from your website will tell you where visitors typically enter, and the pages they most often access. You can then concentrate on enhancing the more popular areas of your site – and deprioritize the sections which see less traffic – and that should hopefully see your visitor count grow. Not only that, but those who do visit will be more likely to come back, elevating your status with search engines. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/WqXCBwex4pqXU3fUGhnKJR.jpg 8. Use RedditModestly labelled as the ‘front page of the internet’, any news story or press release from your company should be put on here, with links to bring people back to your site. However, be advised that Reddit users can take a dislike to anything perceived as overtly corporate, so be careful about how you position content and interact with the denizens of the site. 9. Be a community playerAs a representative for your business, you might want to join appropriate Facebook and Google+ groups, so that you can tap into what they’re thinking, and how they react to product launches and promotions. 10. Be professionalIf you post images on your website or social media, then make sure they’re really good quality ones, and even consider having them link to the full resolution original. The same goes for video footage. Avoid portrait recordings made by a phone with no image stabilization, at the very least. 11. Answer questionsPeople love online experts who can answer questions, so be one of them. There are numerous question-and-answer forums run by the likes of Quora, Yahoo, and so on, which are all free to join. You might also consider adding a question page to your site. You could then take the best answers, and use them to construct a FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions). http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/HGHLcL5Mfd9jnPAVEZpiz6.jpg 12. Create infographicsInfographics are those charts which you see here and there about the web, which graphically illustrate an interesting trend or the breakdown of a market by percentages. Making one that relates to your business, or the market that it operates in, and then distributing this infographic is an excellent way to get visitors. 13. Incorporate a blogThis is a method that both Google and Microsoft (and many others) employ, where they have senior staff blog about new or interesting products that they’re working on. Visitors react better to people than corporate entities, and personalizing product development, in particular, can be highly influential. Often this is a much better way to release company news, rather than an official press release. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/LkJVQV6qaAyWVQhv3LqwRB.jpg 14. Use Google My BusinessThis is most useful if you run a local business where customers can physically come to your office or store to collect products, or engage in personal interaction. The Google My Business tool allows your company to appear on a Google Map search so that you can be found easily by anyone looking for you. A nifty added benefit of being on here is that if your company name is searched via Google, the result returned will also bring up a map showing where you are. 15. Get a webmaster accountMost search engines have special accounts for those who run websites, and once you have this connection with them, you can use it to interact with the company about how you might improve your search ranking. A Google account, for example, is an excellent way to make sure that the site is indexed correctly, and isn’t being ignored for some spurious reason. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/WRZmaSvZnDgiKzD93dhxUR.jpg 16. Use email marketingA timely reminder to previous customers or a nudge to potentially new ones is an effective way to stimulate web traffic. It’s also a great idea to include links to new and interesting content within the marketing email, stimulating the recipient to visit. Just make sure that those who get the emails have a means to decline receiving any further messages, or you’ll get a reputation as a spammer. 17. Cross-marketingOnce you have a web presence up and running, make sure that the web address is clearly visible on all stationery, printed promotional materials, giveaway pens, T-shirts or other merchandize. The more places that your web address is visible, the greater the chances that new folks will see the URL and decide to visit. 18. Have an email signatureAll company emails should have a branded signature, and in that information, a link to the website should be included. By doing this, you ensure that any email which is forwarded to another person will include the link, and allow the recipient to click through to your site with the minimum of effort. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/HEXrtxQbGe8Rfed5bi6yEE.jpg 19. Invest in search enginesSearch engine marketing allows you to promote the position you will appear at on a search, and those links that are present on the first page of results will get the majority of traffic for any given keyword. Paying for a sponsored link enables this to happen, assuming you pay more than your competitors for each link that is clicked. Depending on the keyword, each click might cost you very little or a good bit more, but the fact that most large companies use this method demonstrates that it’s an effective marketing strategy. 20. Use WikipediaMost companies have a Wikipedia page, and those that don’t need to make one. Not only is this a good place to chart the growth of the firm and how it compares to competitors, but it can also provide a good linkage to the main website that anyone researching a subject related to your business might run into. 24. The purpose of branding is to present a unified message about the company and its products. And also wrapped up in this is the need to deliver a story that customers can relate to, in order to establish better connections and loyalty with those people. Businesses spend large amounts of money on branding because the impact of having a well-established brand is a very strong one when it comes to sales and repeat business. Digital branding, as presented on a website, is a narrow aspect of the wider possibilities, as web pages are mostly viewed in 2D and on a relatively small display. However, the difference between brands online and offline is more subtle than the technical limitations of screens. Whereas offline branding only appears where the company places it – i.e. on business cards, stationery, T-shirts and billboard posters – online branding can appear almost anywhere. That hints at one of the issues with online branding, in that there is a possibility that control over the branding is much less refined, and there’s the danger that a brand could be hijacked by others. We’ve chosen the best web hosting services right hereThese are the best free web hosting companies aroundAnd those are currently the best website builders http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/yRbdhss4u8zZFhxZkdECBH.jpg Branding guidesMost large companies have a branding guide that has been created by the marketing department and outlines how their brand should be represented. This documentation was doubtless mostly created for print operations so that when they produce posters or promotional material, it looks like everything else that comes from the company. The guide will detail the various forms of the company logo, how it is used on dark and light backgrounds, and what fonts and lettering are appropriate alongside it. What isn’t usually covered is exactly how big or small a logo can be, and how large it should be in relationship to other elements of a design. For web branding, the size of a logo is important because of the impact on screen space – and so are the colors that the logo uses. Colors for web representation are approximations and not the Pantone accurate hues that printed materials utilize. All screens have different gamut (color space) scopes, and typically they are not color-calibrated to be perfect. Therefore a branding guide for web use should have logos in set sizes, Hex defined colours (#000000 is black), preferred font names and font sizes. Once this template has been created, and example files stored online for sharing, they can be provided to any web developers working on branded content to maintain a definitive styling. Website branding tricksLet’s take the time to consider 10 important tricks to website branding that you might well benefit from. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/nRsQTyjfSn3QXdK5LnpTDM.jpg 1. Logo sizeWe’ve already mentioned the presentation of the company logo. This is a key issue, and it’s important to decide on the size of the logo and then stick with that scale wherever it is used. Having different sizes of any branding is confusing, and means you can’t reuse the same graphics. 2. Cross-brandingIf your site contains other branding, such as sell-through products or businesses that are partners, then make their logos less prominent. Making other company logos the same size or bigger than yours sends entirely the wrong message about your brand’s importance. 3. Limiting filesIf you can keep all branding elements to a very small number of files, and reuse these throughout the site, this will give you many advantages. Not only will this make the site quicker to load for visitors, but when a rebranding occurs, it will be much easier to change everything. 4. Use PNG for logosThe preferred file format for websites is JPG. However, this format doesn’t support transparency, and the PNG format does. If the logo is a PNG file it can be placed over backgrounds without having to make a special graphically integrated version. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/ZmiGhFSCNxQcuYiMfgLiVQ.jpg 5. Have a propositionA new visitor wants to know if they’ve arrived at the right site, and also understand what they can expect to find there. Tell them who you are, what you do, and what makes the company or person special. 6. Be consistentUsing the same logo and colors is good, but this consistency should extend to every aspect of the site, including the personality behind the wording and the placement of commonly utilized elements. Considering a retail equivalent, all signs and carpets should be the same, and promote a clear and concise theme and style. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/8dgMqWA6RWMSqVYJrmFTiT.jpg 7. Consider a mascotA mascot doesn’t work in all contexts, but having a mascot animal, robot or character is a strong idea that visitors will recognize even without the company name. But be warned, not all mascots are loved. Just ask Microsoft’s Clippy! 8. Consider social mediaIf you intend to use your brand on social media – and most will – then consider the restrictions that this places on graphics, and work with them. Perhaps designing specific logos for social media is a good idea, as you can tweak them to work best in that context. 9. Think about visual scanningWhen a person reads a website their eyes perform a pattern of movement that starts at the top-left, then moving right and down. That’s why the logo should be in the top-left. Consider where a visitor’s attention will linger, and place branded elements and business messages in those locations. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/seUMmr35mLwFZT9auyZqGW.jpg 10. Watermarks and tintsIf you have an elaborate logo, placing it over a detailed image won’t work well visually. There are two approaches you can take to resolve this problem. One is to make the logo a watermark on the graphic, either lightening or darkening the content underneath and removing all the colors from the logo. Or conversely, make the background image monochrome, so that the logo stands out over it. Either approach will work. 25. Welcome to TechRadar’s guide of the best portable SSDs on the market right now. We’re going to dive into all the most dependable portable SSDs that combine speed, capacity and mobility to ensure that you can safely keep all your important files during your travels. Just like any other of the best SSDs, you’re going to need a capacious drive, so you won’t run out of space when backing up your important files, like photographs, while also making use of the inherent speed benefits of a solid state drive. So, when looking to buy the best portable SSD, you'll want to consider how much storage space it has. Around 500GB should be enough for many people, but if you want to store lots of large files, such as uncompressed videos, photos or music, then you should consider 1TB or higher of storage space. SSD vs HDD: which is best for your needs?Best external hard drives of 2019Best cloud storage of 2019 online: free, paid and business options You'll also want to consider what type of connection the portable SSD has. Older connections, such as USB 2.0, will cause a bottleneck, as the connection cannot transfer files as fast as the SSD can read and write. So, the best portable SSDs, then, will come with a more modern connection for faster SSDS. USB 3.1 Type-C, or ideally Thunderbolt 3 will be the way to go. And, you should make sure that your laptop or computer supports these connections. Read on to find out what our picks are of the best portable SSDs money can buy in 2019. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/Z9b79bGsddCAitdZ47cboV.jpg Samsung is a company that has made some brilliant portable SSDs, and you'll see a number of its devices on this list, however the Samsung Portable SSD T5 is our pick of the best portable SSD of 2018. It builds on the brilliant design and performance of its predecessor, the Samsung T3 SSD (also on this best portable SSD list), but brings it up to date with an incredibly fast USB Type-C connection that ekes out every last drop of performance from the solid state drive inside. Of course, it's also backwards compatible with USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 if your PC doesn't have USB Type-C. It's expensive, but it's well worth the cash. Read the full review: Samsung Portable SSD T5 http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/pDJLZwmBh8Gh2XRPT5nak3.jpg Seagate is a well-known brand when it comes to storage, and it's brought its impressive experience to the portable SSD market with the brilliant Seagate Fast SSD. This is an impressively slim external SSD, at only 9mm thick with a footprint of 94 x 79mm. Best of all, it's affordable – with prices likely to drop – and it’s an excellent performer, relatively small, plus it has a nice design and a three-year warranty. Well worth considering if you're looking for a the best portable SSD for a low price. Read the full review: Seagate Fast SSD 500GB http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/Cz3a8kn7YxcYLWncZJDHq8.jpg If you want speed above all else, and money is (almost) no object, than the Samsung X5 Portable SSD is the best portable SSD for you. It comes with a Thunderbolt 3 connection that takes full advantage of the super-fast speeds of the brilliant Samsung 970 Evo NVMe SSD that comes inside. However, that pure dedication to speed comes at some expense. First, there's the financial expense, as this is a pricey external SSD. It's also larger and bulkier than the Samsung T3 or Samsung T5, which are also on this list. The device is fairly heavy at 150g, triple the weight of the Samsung T5, and at 116 x 60 x 18mm, it can best be described as portable rather than miniature. However, when it comes to performance, the Samsung X5 Portable SSD is definitely the portable SSD to go for. Read the full review: Samsung X5 Portable SSD http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/NH5Mp4VMVfxPpQbGgYzB6D.jpg This small and compact external hard drive offers very decent speeds, as well as a rugged body that keeps it safe from water - as well as drops and knocks. It's not the fastest drive out there - as it's still reliant on the aging SATA technology, rather than the newer - and faster - NVMe tech, but for the money you're still getting a brilliant performer. Adata claims this is the most compact external SSD, and with dimensions of 72.7 x 44 x 12.2mm and weighing only 37g excluding the cable, it is smaller and lighter than Samsung’s T3 and T5 drives - which are also on this list of the best portable SSDs. While it is pricey compared to some of the other external SSDs we have on this list, remember that it comes with military-certified protection. The stringent MIL-STD-810G 516.6 impact resistance test so it should survive accidental drops and shocks without much damage. If you shop around, you can also get it for less than its RRP. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/auo3MsVa3VK8EDyzbvYzte.jpg Storage giant Western Digital is no stranger when it comes to storage gear aimed specifically at pro photographers, and with the WD My Passport Wireless SSD it has created another brilliant device that photographers (or even regular users) will love. It joins WD's growing stable of wireless hard drives, which allow you to view and move files via a Wi-Fi connection, rather than with a cable, which is handy. However, over Wi-Fi, you're not utilising the full speed of the SSD. It also connects via USB 3.0, which offers very good speeds, but not quite as fast as USB Type-C or Thunderbolt. But the flexibility and durability of the WD My Passport Wireless SSD is certainly tempting, plus it comes with a built-in SD card reader, making it one of the best portable SSDs for photographers. Read the full review: WD My Passport Wireless SSD http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/cZZzaAMvkwyvUMwksfj6xE.jpg The Adata SD700 will suit those looking for a rugged storage device that can provide ample capacity without costing too much. It offers good speeds, and it's IP68 rated, which means you can carry it around with you without worrying about it getting damaged. It comes in capacities up to 1TB, so you don't have to worry about missing out on storage space just because it uses an SSD. However, it doesn't come with the new USB Type-C connection, which means speeds aren't quite as fast as they could be. Want an internal SSD?
