  1. Corroborating with our exclusive report earlier this week, OPPO today confirmed that it is bringing the OPPO Reno2 series to India on August 28. The phones are coming to the Indian market first, before anywhere else in the world which is a rare case. According to the invite, the company is looking to announce more than one smartphone as we can notice the mention of "series" in the title. OPPO Reno received a good response from adopters and the Reno2 seems to be following those steps. It features 20x digital zoom up from 10x on the Reno Zoom Edition. Also, the invite has a silhouette of the phone in question. We can notice that the shark fin styled camera makes a return on the Reno2 along with a quad-camera setup on the back. OPPO Reno2 quad camera detailsWe have some exclusive details on the camera features of the upcoming OPPO Reno2. As per our sources, the primary sensor is said to be a 48MP snapper followed by a 13MP telephoto lens, 8MP ultra-wide camera and a 2MP monochrome sensor. The telephoto lens supports 5X hybrid zoom in addition to 20X digital zooming capabilities. Hybrid zoom works by combining the data from three camera sensors and uses what the company calls the Image Fusion Technology to assist in smooth zooming to distant objects. OPPO Reno2 is rumored to feature a 6.4-inch Full HD+ (2400 x 1080 pixels) AMOLED screen topped with an in-display fingerprint sensor. It could be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 chipset and have a 4,000mAh battery with support for VOOC fast charging solution. 2. Millions of users of Kaspersky Antivirus may have had their online activity tracked without their permission due to a software security flaw. Websites may have been able to track Kaspersky users for years, with individual machines identified and every page visited monitored, a report has found. All of the company's antivirus products thought to be affected by the issue, meaning millions of users could have been affected. Kaspersky: We're ready to go to the next levelKaspersky Free Antivirus reviewKaspersky shifts customer data out of RussiaTrackedThe flaw was uncovered by German security journalist Ronald Eikenberg, who discovered that Kaspersky's software injected JavaScript code onto every web page rendered on every browser. The Kaspersky JavaScript contained an ID number that was replicated in every page rendered on a single machine. The ID number was changed on other PCs. "That's a remarkably bad idea," Eikenberg wrote in c't magazine. "Other scripts running in the context of the website domain can access the entire HTML source any time, which means they can read the Kaspersky ID. In other words, any website can read the user's Kaspersky ID and use it for tracking." Investigating the software on a test laptop, Eikenberg found that even when other visitors came to his site using other computers, the software would read their Kasperksy ID and address them personally, even if they deleted cookies. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/7T9KzmEHNpxr8omE5tiHBH.jpeg Eikenberg notified Kaspersky of the problem, with the company later confirming that the issue existed on all versions of its antivirus software. Kaspersky has now patched all affected software, and published a security advisory alerting users to the flaw. If you think you've been affected, Kaspersky says the best thing to do is ensure your software is updated to the latest version, with patches available on your device or via the company's website. "Kaspersky has changed the process of checking web pages for malicious activity by removing the usage of unique identifiers for the GET requests," the company said in a statement. This change was made after Ronald Eikenberg reported to us that using unique identifiers for the GET requests can potentially lead to the disclosure of a user’s personal information." "After our internal research, we have concluded that such scenarios of user’s privacy compromise are theoretically possible but are unlikely to be carried out in practice, due to their complexity and low profitability for cybercriminals. Nevertheless, we are constantly working on improving our technologies and products, resulting in a change in this process." "We’d like to thank Ronald Eikenberg for reporting this to us." 3. Motorola's smartphones tend to be budget champions, but lots of them also come with weird and wacky features, and now the company has topped itself with the launch of the Motorola One Action. The Motorola One Action, the latest phone in the One line after the Motorola One Vision, comes with some of the features from this predecessor, like a 21:9 6.3-inch display, and a 'punch-hole' front-facing camera, but there are new features too – and one huge new addition which provides the phone's name. These are the best Moto phonesCheck out our thoughts on the Motorola One VisionDoes the Moto G8 have a pop-up camera? This feature is the 'Action Cam', one of the One Action's three cameras. It's a camera that lets you record in 4K quality with a 117-degree field-of-view and, most intriguingly, it can twist video 90 degrees around, so you can hold your phone vertically while filming horizontally. Recording video in this way sounds like a novel experience, and we'll make sure to test it out fully when we get our hands on the device. The other two cameras are a 12MP main snapper and a 5MP depth sensor. Since the Action Cam has an ultra-wide-angle lens, it's likely you'll be able to use it in lieu of a dedicated wide-angle rear camera. Motorola One Action: other featuresThe Motorola One Action runs on an Exynos 9609 chipset, and while Exynos processors are designed by Samsung and usually reserved for Galaxy smartphones, previous Motorola One phones have used them. The battery size is 3,500mAh, and the device supports 10W fast charging – those specs aren't exactly mind-blowing, but they're appropriate for a budget smartphone. There's also a 3.5mm headphone jack, which is indicative of the phone's affordable status. In terms of memory, the One Action has 4GB of RAM, and you'll be able to fit 128GB of your files and media on it, although there's expandable storage if that's not enough. You can pick up the handset immediately in the UK, and it will set you back £219 (roughly $265, AU$390), so it's definitely an affordable phone, but it's just slightly too expensive to fall into our grouping of the best cheap phones. There's no word on a US or Australian release date or price, but we'll update you if we find anything out. If you're interested in the phone, we've briefly tested it out, so check out our Motorola One Action hands-on review to see how we found it. 5. Nvidia has announced its earnings for the second quarter of the 2020 financial year, and it appears that the graphics giant is still feeling the effects of the death of cryptocurrency, with revenue falling by 17%. A few years ago, the cryptocurrency craze was in full swing, with people able to make a decent amount of money using their graphics cards to ‘mine’ for cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum. This led to a surge in graphics card sales, with Nvidia (and particularly AMD) enjoying spectacular results (despite shortages in stock). How to mine bitcoin and other cryptocurrenciesHow to mine Ethereum on your PCBest mining GPUThe huge popularity of cryptocurrency couldn’t go on forever, and when it became harder to make money, sales for graphics cards dropped off sharply. This was a big blow to Nvidia’s revenues, and as its recent results show, it’s still being impacted. However, while on paper these results don’t look that great, they actually beat analyst expectations, with $2.58 billion (compared to $2.54 billion). This news helped Nvidia’s stock rise by 7%. Strength in gamingAccording to the results, Nvidia’s gaming products remain its biggest revenue driver, bringing in $1.31 billion, compared to $1 billion last quarter, and still accounts for over 50% of Nvidia’s total revenue. While it was up compared to the last quarter, gaming revenue was actually down from $1.8 billion a year ago, again highlighting how much the end of the cryptocurrency craze is impacting Nvidia. So while things look bad, it at least seems like Nvidia has turned a corner, once again thanks to its gaming division. “Essentially our business is normalized,” Nvidia’s chief financial officer Colette Kress said. An increase in sales for gaming laptops using Nvidia tech, as well as the success of Nintendo’s Switch console (which uses Nvidia graphics) and the announcement of the Switch Lite, all point to a rosier future. While ‘returning to normal’ isn’t the most exciting of results, in these uncertain times – and with a possible US/China trade war looming – that seems to be good enough for Nvidia. 7. Fresh off the release of its Super RTX graphics cards, Nvidia might not be done giving AMD a run for its money. According to Tom’s Hardware, the Santa Clara company is working on an all-new graphics card that will likely surpass or match its most powerful models. Nvidia hasn’t revealed any plans to design a Super version of its incredibly powerful Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti, but these new details certainly highlight the possibility. Find the best Nvidia graphics cards 2019 for youUpdate your drivers to patch Nvidia GPUs’ security holeHere are all the best graphics cards of 2019AIDA64, a system information, diagnostics and benchmarking solution for Windows, recently added data in its changelog regarding a previously unannounced “Nvidia GeForce RTX T10-8” graphics card, teasing a graphics processor (GPU) that could be joining Nvidia’s highly popular gaming line. It’s all about the dieUnfortunately, not a lot of information is available about this Nvidia GeForce RTX T10-8 card at this time. What we do know is that it’s based on Nvidia’s TU102 die, the very same found in the RTX 2080 Ti and GeForce Titan RTX, and that its current moniker highly suggests that it might be intended for the gaming market. This new card could possibly be a ‘Black’ version of the GeForce Titan RTX, and boast a faster factory clock speed or more memory (as that card already uses a maxed-out TU102 die). However, it’s also likely that the GeForce RTX T10-8 will be something akin to a GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Super, which will put in it between these two cards as far as price and performance. If this is indeed the Super version of the RTX 2080 Ti, we’re expecting more CUDA cores and faster memory at the very least, just like what Nvidia pulled with the RTX 2080 Super. To make it worth the upgrade for many users, however, we’d like to see a considerable performance boost. Ultimately, we don’t want to see another Nvidia RTX 2080 Super, which has been a bit of a letdown, as the performance increase it offers just isn't enough to blow our minds. Will this Nvidia GeForce RTX T10-8 GPU end up being the most powerful RTX card yet, or will it live somewhere in between? Only the inevitable spec sheet and price will tell. 8. Microsoft's Surface Pro 6 and Surface Book 2 are running into some crippling issues, as processor (CPU) clock speeds throttle down incredibly low speeds, TechRepublic reports. The report comes from user complaints that indicate their machines' Intel processors are slowing down to as low as 400MHz. For reference, the lowest-spec Surface Pro 6 runs an Intel Core i5-8250U processor, which normally clocks at 1.6GHz. That's four times faster than the throttled speed users have experienced. And, that CPU can boost up to 3.4Ghz, more than eight times faster than the reduced clock speed. The culprit for the throttling is unclear, but the systems in these instances are reporting a "BD PROCHOT" CPU flag that indicates that some component inside the computer is running too hot, which results in the CPU throttling to decrease the temperatures inside the computer. Unfortunately, the throttling doesn't stop, as the 400MHz clock speed remains for some even after shutting down and rebooting the computer. See how the Surface Pro 6 and Galaxy Book S stack upHere's our pick of the best laptops of 2019These are the best 2-in-1 laptopsBut, which component?Normally, you'd hope for the computer temperatures to go down and have CPU return to normal speeds after the component that raised the flag stops overheating. But, in this case, it's not clear that any component actually is overheating. Some users did suggest the throttling stopped when disconnecting a Surface Dock or AC adapter, while others suggest antivirus software may be at fault. What may be the root of it all is a firmware update. One was recently released for the Surface Pro 6. This wouldn't be the first time an update caused issues for Microsoft's machines. Just recently, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth drivers were hit with issues, and the Windows 10 May 2019 update has caused problems for the Surface Book 2. A Microsoft spokesperson told TechRepublic, "We are aware of some customers reporting a scenario with their Surface Books where CPU speeds are slowed. We are quickly working to address via a firmware update." Here's what we want from a Surface Pro 7http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/digital-home/~4/0ABCxPU9uIs
  9. Nintendo will have a new Nintendo Switch Lite model to offer in September, but it now has a refresh version of the original Nintendo Switch that can offer improved battery life over its predecessor. And, it has shown a substantial increase in playtime in a test by our sister site, Tom's Guide. The test they conducted involved running two Nintendo Switches, an old model and a new model, side by side at maximum brightness for an endless Super Smash Bros. Ultimate match of eight computer-controlled characters with increased AI and all items enabled. The result of the test was 4 hours and 50 minutes for the updated Nintendo Switch and 2 hours and 45 minutes for the original Nintendo Switch. It's worth noting that the original had been purchased and in use since 2017, so the battery may have seen some degradation in charge capacity. But, the results still speak strongly to the increases in battery life of the revised model. Nintendo rates the original Switch battery life at 2.5 to 6.5 hours, and the new Switch at 4.5 to 9 hours. The test showed both devices falling within Nintendo's suggested ranges. Hear our thoughts on a Nintendo Switch ProSee how the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch Lite compareThese are the cheapest Nintendo Switch bundle dealsEfficiency over sizeInterestingly, the size of the Nintendo Switch's battery hasn't changed between the revisions. The new model still has the original 4,310mAh battery capacity. And, since Nintendo doesn't details the specifics of other internal components, it's unclear where exactly the battery life gains are coming from. But, there had been some early suggestions that the new Switch would be more efficient. This test seems to prove it, and it could come down to an improved version Nvidia's custom Tegra X1 processor that powers the Switch. If you're in the market for a Nintendo Switch, make sure you pay attention to whether you're getting the new or original model, as it will make a big difference in your mobile gaming experience. 11. A new survey from Slack has revealed that millions of employees are “unaligned” and this puts them at odds with their organization's strategy, vision and operating principles. To compile its new “State of Work Report” the company behind the popular online collaboration tool worked together with the market research firm GlobalWebIndex (GWI) to survey 17,000 global knowledge workers, managers and executives. Slack wanted to learn more about their experiences in the modern workforce and did so by asking them what do aligned workers look like, why does having aligned workers matter and how do companies attract and retain aligned workers. Slack ups security to keep your chats protectedSlack valued at over $20bn after going publicSlack joins forces with Microsoft Office 365The report found that 1 in 10 global knowledge workers believe they are “unaligned” while 15 percent of UK workers believe they are completely unaligned with their organization's mission. Aligned vs unaligned workersSlack's research discovered that only 34 percent of unaligned workers believe their organization's teams are working toward a shared vision. Of the unaligned workers surveyed, 70 percent either “agree” or “strongly agree” that they would like to feel more aligned with their company's vision, values and operating principles. Aligned workers on the other hand, are the most connected to a company's vision and strategy which leads them to approach their work with optimism and they are more likely to focus on high-value business activities. According to the report, the difference between aligned and unaligned workers has a significant impact on business prospects. Aligned workers in the UK are nearly twice as likely as unaligned workers to expect “significant growth” in their company's revenue and workforce. Unaligned workers in the UK though are three times more likely to expect “significant decline” in their company's revenue and growth. Slack suggests that organizations can help nurture alignment by implementing a clear and frequently communicated strategy with a thoughtful approach to information overload. 12. Protests within the tech industry are gaining momentum and now Google employees are petitioning the search giant not to bid on a cloud contract with US Customs and Border Protection (CBP). A new petition, which began circulating inside the company and on Medium, was created by a group of employees who called out immigration officials for “penetrating a system of abuse and malign neglect” at the US border. The employees also highlighted the Trump administration's family separation policy as well as the recent deaths of immigrant children at the border as reasons why Google should end its work with CBP. What is Google Cloud Storage?US Customs data breach sees traveler information stolenThese are the most popular Google Chrome extensionsJust a few hours after the petition was released, hundreds of employees publicly signed the document to show the company how important this issue is to them. CBP cloud computing contractIn the petition, the employees call on the company to end its work with CBP while also stating that they will not work on the contract if it is awarded to Google, saying: “It has recently come to light that CBP is gearing up to request bids on a massive cloud computing contract. The winning cloud provider will be streamlining CBP’s infrastructure and facilitating its human rights abuses. It’s time to stand together again and state clearly that we will not work on any such contract. We demand that Google publicly commit not to support CBP, ICE, or ORR with any infrastructure, funding, or engineering resources, directly or indirectly, until they stop engaging in human rights abuses.” This is just the latest in a series of protests within the tech industry as a whole and inside Google where employees have begun to question the moral implications of how their work will be used. Previously, Google employees successfully protested the company's plan to work alongside the US government on an AI system designed to analyze drone footage called Project Maven. Google has yet to publicly respond to the petition but we'll keep following this story as it develops to see whether or not this latest protest ends up being a success as well. 15. Motorola is really embracing the Motorola One series, as the Motorola One Vision was released in May 2019 and we've already heard rumors about its two successors. The first is the Motorola One Zoom, and the second is the Motorola One Action, which we've just heard a lot of information about. The leak comes courtesy of website Winfuture, a website that regularly posts leaked phone information, and while it's not clear where Winfuture got the information from, it's a fairly trustworthy source in itself. These are the best Motorola phonesWhat did we think about the Motorola One Vision? Is this the Moto G8?The headline feature of the Motorola One Action, according to the leak, is the 'Action Cam', a 16MP camera that's designed to work like an action cam that you can buy specifically for recording video when on a day out or participating in sports. It's said to record 4K video, which not all phones can do. This action cam joins a 12MP main sensor and a 5MP depth sensor, so there's no dedicated ultra-wide or telephoto lens, although action cams often have wide fields of view. Indeed, this one is said to be 117 degrees. Another novel aspect of the Motorola One Action is its 21:9 aspect ratio, a feature shared with the One Vision but more commonly seen in recent Sony smartphones. This is the same aspect ratio as feature films you'd see in a theatre, and is used to best replicate that experience on a mobile device. According to the leak, the display will be a 6.3-inch LCD screen with a 2520 x 1080 resolution. It seems to have a punch-hole cut-out for the 12MP front-facing camera. The chipset is said to be an Exynos 9609 from Samsung – it's pretty rare for non-Samsung smartphones to have Exynos chipsets, but the One Vision has the same chip. In addition, the phone is said to have a 3,500mAh battery and a 3.5mm headphone port. With regards to price, Winfuture puts it at €259 (around $290, £240, AU$430), so roughly around the same price as the One Vision – of course this price could be different in different regions, but this should give you a rough ball-park figure. Take this leak with a pinch of salt, as there's no source cited, but we'd expect to see the Motorola One Action soon if it can be leaked in this much detail. While we got a taste of Konami horror back in 2014, with Silent Hill: P.T., there hasn't been a core Silent Hill game released since 2012 – but it looks like that could be about to change. Back in July, Konami Entertainment filed a trademark with the Canadian government for Silent Hill, stating the trademark would be for "videogames; computer games services" (via Game Rant). The full service description states the trademark will be used for: "Providing online videogames; providing online computer games; providing information in the field of videogames; providing information in the field of computer games; arranging, organizing and conducting videogame competitions; arranging, organizing and conducting computer game competitions." These are the best horror games on PC and consolesBest upcoming games 2019: most anticipated titles for PS4, Xbox One and SwitchHere are 9 video game remakes that are better than the originalsReturn of the foghttp://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/Kdgr6xXFiqBvTsvZSdhzbH.jpg This trademark filing suggests that we could be be seeing more Silent Hill games in the future, which isn't necessarily surprising considering the latest resurgence of reboots and remasters. Konami could opt to follow in Capcom's steps by remaking one of the more popular Silent Hill games, such as Silent Hill 2, or even remastering some of its titles. However, there's also the possibility the company will choose to give the franchise a modern reboot. The mention of competitions suggests the latter is a possibility as, to date, Silent Hill hasn't had any competitive or multiplayer aspects that could warrant competitions. However, it's worth noting that Konami could simply be filing the trademark to keep Silent Hill in the family, as the company hasn't revealed that it's working on anything Silent Hill-related. Concerns about the short-term prospects of Cisco’s service provider business and fears of an ongoing trade dispute between the US and China have led to the company posting a lower than expected forecast – concerning investors. The company reported fourth quarter revenues of $13.4 billion, an increase of 6 per cent, and annual income of $51.7 billion – a rise of seven per cent. Hardware, which has long been Cisco’s bread and butter, was up six per cent to $7.8 billion for the quarter, while software rose 11 per cent to $1.49 billion and security increased 14 per cent to $714 million. Cisco posts healthy revenues ahead of 5G push5G in the UK: the what, where and how much5G phone deals - the best prices and contractsCisco service provider"Our Q4 results marked a strong end to a great year. We are executing well in a dynamic environment, delivering tremendous innovation across our portfolio and extending our market leadership," said Cisco CEO Chuck Robbins. "We are committed to providing our customers ongoing value through differentiated solutions, and we are well positioned to take advantage of the long-term growth opportunities ahead." These figures are some of the strongest that Cisco has posted in recent years, but a predicted growth rate of 0 – 2 per cent for the next quarter has resulted in a drop in the firm’s share price. Robbins said declining income from service providers contributed to the weak forecast. Having already expanded beyond networking into software and cloud services, Cisco has made a major play for the telecoms market with a 5G portfolio comprising services, infrastructure and automation. Service provider income may not recover until mobile operators begin to make major investments in their core infrastructure to support enterprise applications that require high reliability and ultra-low latency. The initial focus is on coverage, which means investments have been on radio access equipment (RAN) – markets sewn up by the triumvirate of Ericsson, Huawei and Nokia. The majority of Cisco’s revenues come from the Americas and Europe, with just a fraction coming from China. However amid ongoing tensions, Chinese operators are now not entertaining bids for business. Revenues from Asia as a whole were down by 5 per cent. The foldable Huawei Mate X is unlikely to come out before November, which means a delay from the previously slated September launch, TechRadar learned at a press event at Huawei’s Shenzhen headquarters today. There's no possibility of a September launch date anymore, which leaves the door open for the Samsung Galaxy Fold to be the first foldable to market. However, the company is certain the Mate X will launch before the end of 2019. We also got wind of more exciting news: the next Mate X could have more screens, and it might come out as soon as next year. Where will the Huawei Mate X follow-up fit more displays? By swapping out the steel rear cover in the current Huawei Mate X with a glass back, and those glass surfaces could become usable, touchable displays. It’s a big engineering challenge to say the least – it might end up being years before the issues are worked out and we get glass backs on foldable phones. We don't even have them on the upcoming Mate X's 8-inch front display yet. The Huawei Mate X release date is likely being pushed to November – but ideally not any later, as the company wants to get it out in time for the holiday shopping window before the Chinese Spring Festival in early 2020. Mate X changes – and some that didn't pan out At Huawei’s Shenzhen HQ, we saw an earlier ‘cert’ version of the Mate X, one that's slightly different from the phone spotted in the hands of Huawei CEO Ren Zhengfei in late July. The only changes coming to the final version are a slimmer lock button that runs flush when the phone is placed flat, and refinements in the 'Falcon hinge' - but the hinge won't be carbon fiber, as some have predicted. Here's another plot twist that almost went down: the Mate X engineering team had tried other refinements – including replacing the steel back with an aluminum one, which would have saved 20g off the final weight. Unfortunately, when the team tried this a few months ago (testing it out sometime between February and today), the aluminum material wasn’t strong enough. The steel back will remain in the final Mate X after all. But the Mate X engineering team had a bunch of other ideas, too. One of those is the aforementioned glass back. Another is an 'sheet' display - think of it like a roll-out sun shade - that could extend from the bottom of the phone. The tech for that is still years out (even up to a decade) from being feasible, but it shows where the Huawei engineering team is thinking. But, right now the Mate X front display is covered in plastic, as glass simply doesn't fold – yet. There are clearly big challenges standing in the way, especially in the assembly process. The engineering team would need to deal with new gluing complications given the additional glass surfaces (and presumably their touchable display properties). http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/techradar/digital-home/~4/GTx4QIM_nR4

There’s a different tack you can take – and it doesn’t involve his favourite aftershave, the best outdoor barbie or the most convenient gift card you can find. Everyone loves laying their hands on the latest tech, so we recommend you find a cool new gadget to gift dad this Father's day so you can help transform how he spends his free time or gets his work done. And while it's easy to suggest a range of power banks and storage devices, we're trying something different and have put together a list of 15 gizmos we know any father would love. Our recommendations are across a range of price points, so there'll be something suitable for every budget and whatever you decide to get him, it's sure to make him feel like the superdad he is. In fact, you might even find a little something for yourself in our list – after all, there's no rule that says you can't treat yourself to something special on Father's Day. There's tiny speakers hidden in the arms of the glasses that will serenade dad with his favourite tunes and people around him will barely even realise! There's also audio augmented reality features on-board, with apps available that make excellent use of the tech on the Frames – there are apps for the golfer or a tourist looking for information on a city's major landmarks. Dad can even get on stage with Elvis if he's a fan. There's three hours of battery life, after which, sadly, the Bose Frames go back to being regular sunglasses. Authorised prescription lenses are currently not available, but Bose is in talks with third parties to make the appeal of the Frames more mainstream. The screen light is easily adjusted to suit the reading environment and the battery generally lasts a couple of weeks between charges, even with the light on. While it’s no secret that some people love it while others think Canon has made too many compromises, we really don’t have too many complaints with the camera. 21. Last week, it was discovered that iPhone users would lose Battery Health functionality when replacing their battery via a third-party service, leaving them unable to see diagnostics on how the battery is performing day-to-day and more broadly. iPhone users who have had the batteries on their devices replaced by third parties were receiving the following blatant error message, even if a genuine battery was installed: ”Unable to verify this iPhone has a genuine Apple battery. Health information not available for this battery”. Planning to replace your iPhone's battery? You may lose this featureApple respondsApple has now responded to criticism that the message is purely designed to direct customers to its own, typically more expensive, replacement program by claiming that it’s a matter of user safety. Speaking to The Verge, an Apple spokesperson said, “This information is there to help protect our customers from damaged, poor quality, or used batteries which can lead to safety or performance issues. This notification does not impact the customer’s ability to use the phone after an unauthorized repair.” It could be reasonably argued that the inability to view the health, performance, and life expectancy of a battery does impact the customer’s ability to use the phone to its full extent. As for Apple’s case, however, it could also be argued that the company can’t guarantee that the diagnostic data it’s displaying is accurate when the replacement has been undertaken by a third party, even if the battery itself is authentic. iPhone battery replacements by third-parties may no longer void your Apple warrantyOther controversiesThe legal implications for Apple if it were to display the diagnostic data from batteries replaced by a third party are unclear and would, likely, vary from region to region. Last year, in Australia, Apple was fined AU$9 million by the country’s consumer watchdog after it told customers they weren’t entitled to repair or refund for their bricked iOS devices due to them having undergone third-party repairs. The court found that “the mere fact that an iPhone or iPad had been repaired by someone other than Apple did not, and could not, result in the consumer guarantees ceasing to apply, or the consumer’s right to a remedy being extinguished”. At the end of 2017, Apple also began to offer cheaper battery replacements for older iPhones due to a controversy dubbed BatteryGate. Essentially, the more recent versions of iOS would throttle the CPU on older iPhones in order to maintain reasonable battery life, but Apple didn’t make this clear enough to users. It’s one of the main reasons the tech giant first implemented the Battery Health feature in iOS 12. Apple's iPhone battery life claims are exaggerated, claims UK watchdogSolutions? As for the current controversy, Apple has told The Verge that users who are getting the ‘unauthorized’ warning message but believe that their battery is in fact authorized should take their device back to the service that replaced it in order to verify it. This should re-enable the Battery Health functionality, but for those that have had their battery replaced by a third-party business, Apple currently isn’t offering a solution. 22. GoPro has become a name synonymous with action cameras and, historically, each year the company has launched a new range of its superb snappers in September. The GoPro Hero6 Black arrived late September 2017, while the GoPro Hero7 Black (along with its cheaper siblings, the Hero7 Silver and the Hero7 White) came along exactly a year later in 2018. So it should probably come as no surprise that rumors and leaks of the next generation of GoPros have begun to emerge from the woodwork. Today, photography news site Photo Rumors has unearthed images of what appears to be a GoPro Hero8 snapper. While the leaked images aren’t particularly sharp, a grey figure 8 on the side of one does strongly hint that this is the next generation of GoPro camera. The pictures also indicate that GoPro has redesigned the Hero8 in order to accomodate new optional accessories, including a microphone, an external display and an LED light. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/XJuzvtDbMmxuFs4s9mGgAL.jpg We have previously heard hints of a redesign. Back in May, GoPro CEO Nick Woodman revealed that the company was looking to refresh the entire range across all the price points. That could also imply we’ll see not just a radically revised GoPro Hero8 Black, but possibly a Hero8 Silver and Hero8 White as well. Expect even more buttery-smooth videoThe upcoming GoPro Hero8 range will retain its predecessors' 4K video shooting capabilities, but rumors suggest it will double the ante, with the Hero8 Black potentially capable of recording at up 120fps at 4K (as opposed to the 60fps on the Hero7 Black), while Full HD 1080p videos could be shot at up to 480fps. It's also anticipated that the eighth gen action camera will house the brand new GP2 processor under the hood. If that’s the case, we should see a marked improvement in performance over the (admittedly already excellent) GoPro Hero7 Black. The new processor could potentially improve the camera’s low-light performance and make the superb HyperSmooth image stabilization feature even more silky. The best action cameras you can buy right nowDJI Osmo Action hands-on reviewA 360-degree viewWhile discussing the company's Q1 2019 earnings results in May, Woodward also mentioned that it's expecting to announce a next-generation spherical camera in the fourth quarter of 2019. If that’s true, that's likely to be a successor to the GoPro Fusion that was released in mid-2018. We haven’t had any word on what the Fusion 2 will be like, but the original is capable of shooting 5.2K resolution videos at up to 30fps. However, the current camera’s ‘over-capture’ feature – which converts 360-degree footage into regular widescreen videos – is quite time-consuming, meaning it's a product perhaps best suited to professionals. Hopefully, GoPro will make a follow-up more user-friendly to give it mainstream appeal. All this is still speculation, of course, but if GoPro sticks to its usual routine, we’ll likely have an official announcement for the eighth-generation action cameras (and perhaps even the Fusion 2) sometime next month. To get the deal, students need to visit a special website that Currys PC World has created for the promotion, and scan in and upload their A-Level results by 11:59PM Thursday August 22. Then, 10 lucky students will be picked to buy the Surface Laptop 2 for just £8.79. This deal is only available to A-Level students, but if you're not comfortable uploading your results, or you're not one of the 10 lucky students picked for this deal, then Currys is running other Back to School offers for students getting ready for college and university. This includes 10% off all Surface devices, including the Surface headphones, and starting August 14, the Surface Laptop 2 and Surface Book will get 10% discounts. While this is technically more a competition than a deal, the chance to get a Surface Laptop 2 to take to university for so cheap is certainly tempting... 25. Your web host has a major influence on SEO. Speed, or how quickly your website loads is the most important factor. When a user arrives at your website it needs to respond quickly – it feels more natural and it’s what we all expect these days, no one likes waiting for anything anymore! There are several factors at play here, so let’s look at the key factors that can up your site’s SEO… How to choose a web hosting service?Take a look at our web-hosting tips eBookWhat are the different types of web hosting?BandwidthThe bandwidth available to your website to broadcast and the capacity available to you when viewing - only the former is relevant here as the search engine crawlers generally run from the fastest networks around they still ‘see’ your site very quickly if the sites available bandwidth is good enough. But, if you have built your website with a mass of inappropriately large images and videos this will also slow the site down and impede user (and search crawler) experience, thus impacting negatively on the site. The sweet spot therefore is a fast host with plenty of bandwidth and a well optimised website in terms of all the content therein. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/oHUK7vsufHFapkDjJyHXsX.jpeg UptimeUptime is the amount of time your website is active for people to view and visit it. Poor uptime creates an adverse experience for your users and thus reduces the ‘value’ of the site in the search algorithms matrix. Furthermore, if your website were down at the time the search engines were crawling your website this can be extremely bad. So, hosts with poor uptime performance should be avoided at all costs. There are a number of ways you can find out how good your potential host is from online data sources and third-party monitoring. CostIt is likely (but not a rule) that the lower the price of the hosting you are using the worse it will be. Why? The lower the cost the less bandwidth you will be allocated, and more likely the lower quality hardware you will be placed on. Hardware with many processor cores, solid state hard drives and 10GB networking will outperform single processor, spinning disk, 1GB network systems by orders of magnitude on a number of different levels. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/bXy3nBdbNkadCFnRDiEgT4.jpg NetworkThe network your website is being broadcast from can be a huge factor in either improving all the previous points or even undermining the good ones! If you have a fast server which has great uptime, but the network is in the outer reaches of the Antarctic with very few routes to anywhere else, the impact will again be speed performance. Finding the best web hostTo find the best web host possible for your site you should look for a host with the following combination: 1. A very fast network located on or near major points of presence (in the UK these include London and Manchester), and with the ISP having negotiated priority routing (known as Tier 1 routing). 2. Excellent hardware based on multi-core and even multi-machine hardware with RAID (5,6 or 10) arrays, based on solid state hard drives, and redundancy capability to mitigate hardware failure and downtime. Note: wherever possible make sure you grab a backup of your website and associated data regularly (but do bear in mind the new GDPR rules). 3. CDN (Content Delivery Networks) and distribution of load points for common libraries such as JQuery can also dramatically improve load time performance, reduce bandwidth requirements from your main host and thus improve user experience and load times. CDNs are a way of co-locating your image and video (generally) content such that it takes the load of your main host. Your website html and operational code remains on your hosting server along with Database (another massive area of consideration – more on this, below), and consequently transactional information. The images and videos are placed on a distributed network of hosting usually designed to deliver more ‘locally’ to the user. So, my website may be hosted in the UK but the images and videos can be loaded more locally for users in Australia and the US for example, as such massively improving latency and the feel of the website for those users. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/Sh4SNG5GwNT5QCvHVs9ABk.jpg DatabasesA word on databases; Most functional websites use databases, let’s face it, if you just have a static site with minimal to no updates it doesn’t matter how fast your website is it’s unlikely to rank well. So, assuming you have a database, everything we have discussed so far becomes doubled up. The same rules apply – a very fast web host with poor database service will impede the performance of your website. The size and scale of your database needs to be considered here. Most larger scale sites need separate and dedicated hardware for their databases, keeping the site and database on the same hosting server both increases risk, and in many cases reduces overall performance. It goes without saying at this point that a well-designed website with a good codebase and well-engineered database architecture are also key factors. Improving SEO performanceTo summarise, fast hosting, well linked by the underlying IPs (Internet Protocol addresses), especially with a number of high performing sites, boost each other’s potential. Whereas bulk, (cheap) relatively slow hosting by an ISP with masses of low-quality sites will potentially adversely affect the SEO performance of your website. Now we’ve covered web hosting, for some more general tips on boosting SEO, try the following: UX is key, is your site giving users a great experience? Are there call to actions? Is it easy to navigate? Users want to get their information and answers quickly and easily, so if your site is hard to use, they will go elsewhere.Post regular, engaging content that relates to you and your business. Update your content regularly, don’t expect users to come to you if your content isn’t fresh and is more than six months old.Use social media platforms to post links back to your site.Use H tags for headings, generally use HTML5 well.Optimise your alt tags on images. They must be relevant. Don’t have “getty10485795.png” for example – it means nothing to anyone.Optimise your on page meta Add OG images making your pages sharable with supporting images. While keywords are a bit out-dated now, it doesn’t hurt to add them and be sure to enrich your copy with them. However, the key words and phrases in your articles should match the page title and images as well as possible.Use SEO tools to monitor and gain an understanding of how your site’s SEO is performing, then adapt where there is room for improvement. Optimise image size. The bigger the image, the longer the load time. They need to be good quality but not too large, in terms of file size.
