    PPSH bug

    I know I reported this last year, and got a mixed response, but I am still getting reports from players of being unable to connect due to this error: BG_Index Er String: unknown to 'PPSH': animations/scripts/human_parse.script line 22 Seems to happen mostly with players using Win7 or Macs. I don't have anything to tell my players other than "sorry, it's a known bug", so any workarounds would be helpful.
  2. I have mixed feelings about it, it sounds like fun but it could be used to run hacks since it will access a client-side file that the server owner doesn't have control over. It would be like running a non-pure server.
  3. ET loads the pk3 files in order, and as each is loaded by the server it's contents are added to the current settings. So when you add a pk3 file to your server, it needs to have a name that will be loaded later than whatever you are trying to overpower in the original settings. So the default mod pk3 has one hit sound, and when your pk3 loads after it the hitsound gets replaced with what is in your file. That is why you see lots of pk3 files that start with "zzz" or "~~~~~". These characters force the server to load them last, so they will overwrite the previously loaded pk3 files. The "silentsoundpack1.pk3" file gets loaded just after the "silent-0.5.2.pk3" for example. Also just add a larger number to the end if you change one of your own custom pk3 files. For example silentsoundpack1.pk3, silentsoundpack2.pk3, etc. (Please use your own name though). With clan server menus in particular, you will often see people use names like "~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~.pk3" because they are trying to get their menu file run last on the client's etmain, so they can overwrite all the other clan server menus. It's kind of an arms race.
  4. Don't modify the silent-0.5.2.pk3 file. Modifying this file and redistributing it on your server will cause problems for your players. You must always rename a pk3 file if you modify it. This happened on a lot of No Quarter servers and it was awful. They left some settings in their mod pk3 files that a lot of admins changed, and many of them did not rename it. So there were fifty versions of the same pk3 file out there, and it hurt the mod a lot because everyone was issuing different versions of the same file. You can change the hitsound quite easily by downloading the silentsoundpack1.pk3 file form the download section of this forum, opening it with pakscape or winzip, and replacing the sound file in there with your favorite one. Be sure to rename the file so you don't distribute a bad copy. Also you cannot remove the mp40/thompson weapon menu listing on silent mod. It is hard coded into the silent mod itself. It's not something you can turn off with a config setting.
  5. Is it permissible to fork a new mod based on silent? That would solve this issue without compromising the silent mod. Since there is so much good work done in silent it would be the best platform for a derivative mod.
  6. Lots of good points Beck. I like silent the way it is myself. I think it is actually more configurable than jaymod. But most players don't know or care what happens at the admin level, they just want certain weapons. Even changing the font of the game confuses a lot of them. Herd behavior I guess.
  7. Some players ask me if it is possible to combine jaymod with silent mod. I think they want the molotovs, the poison gas, and the M97 shotguns built into silent mod. As if I could just cut and paste a few files and make it happen. They want the jaymod look on top of silent mod.
  8. You have to have your server provider enable it, since it requires running on more than one port. Most server hosting companies will not get involved. If you want to migrate to a host that will help you then you should contact Hellreturn. Running on both master lists will definitely help you get more traffic.
  9. From my own time there, it seemed most of the content was spam... including the stuff I wrote lol. Actually it probably has more to do with the size of the forum to make it worth spamming.
  10. Lag is often map-dependent. Fueldump and baserace are notorious for lag in the open areas. ET lags more when the server has to render more open map area. It has something to do with the size of the open area. I am not an expert on how maps are rendered, but I know big open maps lag more.
  11. It is relatively easy to reskin the dual pistols as two copies of any other weapon (like two mp40s for example) but having one of each would be a challenge. I do not know if it possible to have different weapons in each hand. Plus they would be pistols underneath, which have lower accuracy, and less ammo, so it would not be the same as the real weapons. If he wanted both weapons on the same player (but not holding one in each hand), so he could hit 3 and switch between them, he could just use enhanced mod and give the players both the mp40 and the thompson. Google enhanced mod if you are interested. Using enhanced mod on silent is a bit harder than jaymod, and may interfere or not work properly. Don't use it unless you know what you are doing.

  15. Good idea. WIth jaymod there are tools available that players or server admins can use to modify the qagame and cgame files. When server admins load these files sometimes it can cause problems for unsuspecting players. For example, the enhanced HUD file (from the maker of enhanced mod) installs a modified cgame_mp_x86.dll file that does not match the original installed by the unmodified jaymod client pk3. So players who get this file often cannot join a pure jaymod server later. Many pk3 and binary modders do not warn people of all the side effects of using their creations. Big problem in ET.
  16. Silent is from the old etpub source code and that is how etpub was set up. Personally I like the jaymod command system, because that was what I learned on first. But the silent system works once you relearn all the flags for each command. You have to read the shrubbot guide in the server.html document. It is like learning a different language since you already know the jaymod way. The jaymod use limit is a problem, at ~10,000 players a lot of servers get problems. If you have a decent server you can get that many unique players in a few months or a year. Then there is no easy way to clear out the old users. I tried copying one into excel to remove the older player accounts with a VBA macro, but it didn't work very well. So you end up just keeping it and having occasional bugs, or removing it completely and having angry players. So the silent database is a major improvement over this. Also it is encrypted, so it is harder to be read if someone gets it who should not have it. With jaymod user.db anyone who can download your user.db can read it.
  17. Also I have used this venom skin file in jaymod with other weapons and it did not give this bar. Might be related to the PPSh. You can edit the name of the .weap file inside the pk3 file to another weapon and see if it removes the bar.
  18. Yes there is a slight bar that appears for a few milliseconds when you switch weapons. It has no effect on the weapon. I don't remember where I got the venom skin, but I did not modify the model itself. I don't know what causes it. If you want to take the venom models out of RTCW itself, you might be able to construct one that does not have this bar.

  20. In the US we are taught that the Germans ran many death camps inside Poland. Some Poles supported the Nazi effort and helped them. But most Poles hated the Germans and resisted them. The Poles lost millions of their own people fighting off the Germans, far more than some other European countries who had more resources but did not try as hard. So we respect the Poles.

  22. I ran silent mod on one of my servers last year. I liked the "feel" of the mod, but I always had problems with xp resetting. I haven't run silent since last year. Last week I rented a huge machine and one of the servers I wanted to put on it is a silent mod. So I downloaded the 0.5.1 version on ubuntu server 12.04. Yeah I know Debian is faster, and I will probably switch to it when I need more power, but I have tons of power now and I can find more information online about ubuntu. My problem that has inspired me to post today is that the xp stays at zero all the time for all players, human and omnibot.   23. I got this error when I tried running Silent test servers on a home computer with Win7. I also got reports of it from other players trying to connect to my silent mod server, last year when I was running it on a host with WIn2008 server (silent 0.5.0) Very frustrating error. We referred to it as "the PPSH error" on the forum when the players reported it. I never had any good explanation for them either.

It does not change the underlying settings of the PPSh-41. This file also contains the same jaymod body hitsound as the silentsoundpack1.pk3 file. Do not use the silentsoundpack1.pk3 on the same server as this file. They will conflict with each other. To use, download the zip file and change the extension from "zip" to "pk3".
